Houston - Serbino Sandifer-Walker is an award-winning multimedia journalist, journalism professor and assistant dean of the School of Communication at Texas Southern University. She is breaking-ground in digital storytelling where journalists use cutting-edge technology, social media, mobiles and tablets to tell in-depth news stories and develop innovative content for multimedia platforms. She created the first Social Media Correspondents team on a college campus. She is also creator of the historic website, Houston Student Movement, which focuses on Houstonʼs civil rights movement. She is currently working on a multimedia publication about Houstonʼs civil rights movement. Some of her early work on the movement led the Texas Historical Commission to designate a historic marker in honor of Houstonʼs first sit-in on the 50th anniversary on March 4, 2010. We have seen this movie before, beginning, middle and end. The plot is familiar as grits, eggs and poultry to a deep and dirty south family. There is a reason that America doesn’t have a king and doesn’t want a king. A little over 200 years ago our forefathers fought a brutal revolution to emancipate from its mother countryGreat Britain and King George the III. Although Black people were chattel slaves, Crispus Attucks still gave his last and greatest measure of devotion to the cause of freedom.

King George and the Queen produced fifteen children who were often despised by the public because they were low livers, endless crazy parties and wild nights, overindulging in the pleasures of life. Ben Franklin went to England to try and convince the King to grant representation to his American subjects and stop imposing taxes. So we were taught in grade school that the King refused Ben’s request and this refusal let the dogs of war out. King George had fits whereby he couldn’t stop talking and lying. The reason that one knew he was lying is that his lips were moving. During his 180-character Twitter styled rants his core subjects became his cheerleaders by using the stinking perfume and cologne. Back to the reason, we don’t have Presidents as Kings. Kings feed their rapacious appetites, but their souls go hungry, then MAD. Soon King George III lost his ability to have a good night’s sleep. Benadryl or scotch shots can’t cure this type of insomnia.
Black Crispus Attucks and Thomas Paine sparked an insurrection in Boston and all the Kings Horses would be unable to put the King back together and enable him to regain his richest colonies. Britain retained India and the Far East colonies for a moment in history. In this cheap rerun the Kings magicians and doctors can’t stop the madness. Some thought that it was genetic- an inheritance from inbreeding. Some thought it was the inevitable result of the combination of a stable genius and a fool. Nevertheless, when Pharaoh gets the message the die has already been cast. Our revolution in 1776 produced safeguards against mad kings who couldn’t read the tea leaves or smell the coffee. Brilliant is the co-equal branches of government and the separation of powers. Education, Democracy And Christianity Democracy requires an educated-spiritually-intelligent voting population. The Bible states it in a most profound emphatic manner: “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” (Revelation 1: 3). Understanding the spiritual instruction of the Holy Bible is necessary for the proper functioning of a democratic society; without becoming a Theocracy. Thus, in the sight of God equal is equal, not more or less equal. The election of Donald J. Trump to the Office of President is a clear-cut-spiritual example of why spiritual-education is so very important to the well-being of a healthy democratic society. “Then Peter and the other Apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Especially males such as Donald J. Trump). (Acts 5: 29). Every American needs to know for their own spiritual and mental stability and well-being that, “And
hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keep not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought also walk, even as he walked.” (1 John 2: 3—6). Christian Right Evangelicals cease and desist from using ungodly racially-oriented-motivated-doctrines of exclusion, because “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3: 23-24). Therefore: “Let all things de done decently and in order.” (1 Corinthians 14: 40). Thus, if every American understood these profound words of spiritual inspiration; we would have peace and tranquility in American society, and spiritual love would abundantly flow like a mighty stream. Above all, America could assist in establishing peace, civility, and tranquility in the world’s communal-order; not by carrying a Big Stick (military might), but by spiritually respecting and loving the human dignity of others. I really can’t stay (But, baby, it’s cold outside) I’ve got to go away (But, baby, it’s cold out there) This evening has been (Been hoping that you’d drop in) So very nice (I’ll hold your hands, they’re just like ice) HOUSTON - Who doesn’t love Ray Charles’ and Betty Carter’s version of Frank Loesser’s Academy Award winning song, “Baby, it’s cold outside,” which gained wide recognition in 1949 when it was performed in the film Neptune’s Daughter? Well, aside from the latter-day #MeToo movement’s questionable lyrics claim, the opener is the perfect kickoff for the time of year which is upon us -- it’s Cuffing Season, baby! For those of you who don’t know what Cuffing Season is, it is the time of year when it seems everyone wants to grab a “cuddle buddy” or get “boo’ed up,” as they say. According to the Urban Dictio-
nary, during the fall and winter months people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves desiring to be “cuffed” or in a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity cause singles to become lonely and desperate for any kind of companionship, yep, even the half-assed attempts. Like the song says, “Baby, it’s cold outside,” and while you may think you are “hot and heavy” with a new love interest or may be excited that your old flame came back into your life, you may need to be aware, it could be a seasonal thing and you could be single again – very soon! It is easy to say you won’t get caught up, but let’s face it, sex during Cuff-
ing Season is probably some of the best sex you may get all year. That’s why we get so crazy when it’s all over in the spring. (LOL) Think about it. The holi-
day season already makes us feel “all warm and fuzzy” inside and, after being paraded around in front of his or her family members, you feel even closer to the person you’re
with. But don’t completely ignore the nosy, outspoken aunt who mumbles – loud enough for you to hear – “this one ain’t gonna last long either.” Nonetheless, after the great family dinners, holiday work parties and meet-and-greets, the two of you go home to one of your warm beds and let’s just say— release the type of “exhales” Angela Bassett and Whitney Houston were waiting for. Ahhhh, that Cuffing Season is something to behold!

ELECTION DAY IS HOUSTON – Two days before Thanksgiving, a Houston family who lost their house due to Hurricane Harvey turned the key and unlocked the door to their brand-new home. Thanks to several nonprofit agencies, including Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation (FWCRC), Bayou City Relief, and BuildAid Houston, with the added help from David Weekley Homes, the McCrimmon family happily returned to their Fifth Ward neighborhood, just in time for the holidays. “We are extremely excited that we were able to get this family back into a house in time for the holidays,” says Kathy Flanagan Payton CEO and president of the
FWCRC. “This family, like countless others, has faced several hurdles relative to recovery. After two years, it will be good for them to finally have a home again to resume building memories for years to come.” After Hurricane Harvey, the McCrimmon family was able to get help cleaning and gutting their original house, but the family was left without a viable place to live. They turned to Bayou City Relief, an agency backed by Bayou City Fellowship. Once the organization understood the extent of the destruction to the McCrimmon house, they began to seek other partners. That is how FWCRC, BuildAid Houston, and David Weekley Homes became involved.
After a few meetings, the community partners determined it was more financially sound to tear the original house down and build a new structure. An average investment of $35,000 cash or in-kind, by each partner made this new home possible, at no cost to the family.

“We are thankful that this collaboration of partners said ‘yes’ because saying ‘no’ was the easier option,” said Colleen Henneke, Director of Bayou City Relief. “The building of this home is a model of how the faithbased community, the redevelopment community, disaster relief, and for-profit developers collaborated to help those in need,” Payton said. “As the project leaders would say, ‘We’re Houston Strong’”

Did Lakewood have a hidden agenda?

HOUSTON - In 2004, he burst onto the scene as the ‘College Dropout’ letting the world know that “Jesus Walks” with them. For that one song, three separate videos were released and debuted at a TriBeCa screening; giving the world a sneak peek into the mind of a man whom we would soon learn has as many sides as he has monikers: Kanye, Ye, Yeezy, Yeezus and his newly-proclaimed “Christian Genius Billionaire.” The moving, unapologetic message belted out by the rapper and his hip hop choir, gave credence to the line in the chart-topping song, demanding “somebody tell these niggas who Kanye West is.” And who he is— is an unpredictable, outspoken, controversial, award show interrupting entertainer now married to arguably the world’s most famous Instagram and reality starturned innocence project advocate and activist — Kim Kardashian West. In a strange art imitating life kind of way, the Jesus Walks videos 15 years ago seem to be eery premonitions of his present-day moves. Version one of the video trinity depicted a skid row drunk, an L.A. gang banger and a prostitute each running away from their current “walks of
life” and winding up simultaneously seeking repentance at the pulpit of a church where a rapping Kanye preacher awaited them.
Now in 2019, West and his choir have re-emerged, most recently on the stage at Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, one of the nation’s richest and most powerful mega churches. This time, though, there are as many skeptics as there are fans, wondering if West has, indeed, had a calling? Some say it is merely a publicity stunt and that West, who is known for his shameless attention seeking antics, is just doing it for a mixture of album promotion and/or politics, while others say, “the doors of the church are open,” and judge not, lest ye be judged. Matthew 7:1. Speaking of the doors of the church, could this be a way of Osteen gaining positive attention after receiving backlash for allegedly shutting out people during Hurricane Harvey? African American News and Issues reached out to some of Houston’s Black pastors to share their thoughts. “It was a million-dollar production. It takes a whole lot to advertise and promote, right? And propaganda gains free publicity,” said T. Leon Preston II, Sr. Pastor,
Yale Street Baptist Church.
Preston went on to break it down into street terms. “In the drug world years ago, if they had a new sportsman (illegal) lodge, they would order a bust and it would be on the news. Now everybody who never even knew it was there before knows about it because of the free publicity and it would become a hot spot,” he said. And for West, who recently released “Jesus is King,” is this making him a hot seller again after, in 2016, he was forced to cancel nearly two dozen dates on his Saint Pablo tour after reportedly suffering a mental breakdown? According to Bloomberg, West sacrificed roughly $30M in ticket sales from the halted tour. So why Lakewood? “The stage is there; the accommodation is there; and the seating is there. You must remember, it used to be a basketball stadium,” Preston explained. “You already have a captivated audience. Now you can jump start from the largest church in the nation.” So who benefited the most? West or Osteen? “You want me to throw you a curve ball?” Preston asked. “Trump benefited. I’m more inclined that this was an introduction to a political movement. Let the
wheat and the tares grow together, and in the end, He will do the separation. The wheat is the good, the tares are the bad and it is up to God to separate them. What doesn’t come out in the wash, will definitely come out in the rinse.” Despite his uncertainty on West’s agenda, Preston wanted to make two things clear. “One. We never want to paint the picture that any of the Black pastors are anti-Joel Osteen or Lakewood Church,” he said. “Two, I have attended the Lakewood Church on a few occasions for their regular church, but will Joel EVER attend mine on ONE occasion? What meeting did Kanye West have with the Black church pastors and leaders to simply say that he was even bringing this production here or what its
vision was for Houston?” Dr. D.Z Cofield, Sr. Pastor, Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Third Ward, had a different outlook on West’s visit when asked similar questions. “My understanding was that Joel Osteen reached out and invited Kanye and I think Pastor Osteen should be commended for it. My mother told me ‘don’t go anywhere you haven’t been invited,’ so I don’t know if Kanye was even invited by another church in Houston of any race,” Cofield said. “The other thing that we’ve missed is him not just visiting Lakewood, but of him ministering and performing at the Harris County Jail. When I heard that, it reminded me of Matthew 25 when Jesus talks about ‘me being in prison and ye visiting me not.’ The idea that when we have an opportu-
nity to go and serve and we do it; that’s a tremendous testimony, so I wish him the best,” Cofield expressed. “We are never in the position to judge. The truth is, judgment is above our pay scale.” Version two of Jesus Walks video shows Black men in a prison chain gang slaving in the fields and a KKK terrorist burning a cross. Cofield went on to say, “a lot of the criticism that Kanye has reminds me of the criticism that the apostle Paul got when he was first converted. The early Christians didn’t believe him, they didn’t trust him because they knew of his reputation and his past, they didn’t believe that he had experienced a true conversion in his present, and so for us to stand in judgment Cont. aframnews.com

Anika is the Top Store Leader at H-E-B MacGregor Market. She started her H-E-B career in 1997 in Austin. In 2002, she earned her marketing degree from Huston-Tillotson University, one of 10 historical black colleges and universities in Texas. Anika is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and is a celebrated honoree of Who’s Who in Black Houston 2019. With a strong sense for the community, Anika is a big supporter of public education, often volunteering her time as a mentor at area schools. “I’m humbled to serve our community with a state-of-the-art store,” says Anika. “We look forward to providing an outstanding shopping experience with the best H-E-B has to offer.”
Victoria is the Community Coordinator for H-E-B MacGregor Market. A Houston native, she was raised in the South Park neighborhood. She is a proud alum of Texas Southern University and she is pursuing her master’s degree in Public Relations at The University of Houston. Victoria is the Vice President for the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals and is a member of the Texas Southern Alumni Association (Houston Chapter), Houston HBCU Alumni Association and the Greater Houston Black Chamber. Victoria has strong ties to her childhood neighborhood and is an active member of her local Baptist Church. A devoted mother, she is deeply committed to giving, educating and empowering those in need. ADRIAN JUDIE, RPH
Adrian is the Pharmacy Manager for H-E-B MacGregor Market. He is a long-time Houstonian and has nearly three decades of experience in the pharmacy field. In 2001, Adrian earned his bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Texas Southern University and is an active supporter of his alma mater. While working for H-E-B, Adrian has received numerous company honors, including Excellence in Pharmacy, Preceptor of the Summer and Manager of the Year. He is a long-time resident of Houston’s historic Third Ward. When not at work, Adrian enjoys spending time with his family and being involved in sports.
