50th Anniversary of Thurgood Marshall’s Confirmation as First AfricanAmerican Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.” - Thurgood Marshall Just over 50 years ago, Thurgood Marshall was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the first African-American justice to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. On August 30, 1967, Marshall took the bench on the highest court in the land. He played a vital part in ending legal segregation during the Civil Rights Movement through the landmark 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education. Background The grandson of a slave, Marshall was born on July 2, 1908, in Baltimore, Maryland. He lived through some of the most trying times of race relations in America’s history, which undoubtedly shaped his legal philosophy. Marshall studied law at Howard University. As counsel to the NAACP, he utilized the judiciary to champion equality for African Americans. In 1954, he won the Brown v. Board of Education case, in which the Supreme Court ended racial segregation in public schools. Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967, and served for 24 years. Brown v. That is why in a world surrounded by many colors, cultures and ethnic backgrounds and living in melting pot America where one of my neighbors is White and one is Hispanic and Asian, being prejudice in 2017 seems so be such a far fetched and stupid waste of time.
Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin’s wife, Charlene Sumlin, posted an update on Twitter after she received support for calling out an anonymous writer after her family received a racist letter last week. They were the subject of a vicious attack by some anonymous coward from the Houston area who wrote a letter that ended up with the family that said, “You suck as a coach! You’re a N**** and can’t win! Please get lost! or else.” In one part of her public reply, Charlene Sumlin made it clear to the racist fool and others the following: “We have a wonderful, HAPPY life that has ZERO to do with football. And that will never change,” she said. “So please grant us the grace of allowing us to be normal people. OUR lives are not defined and our happiness is not determined by this game. We are stronger than that.”
Racism is Ugly at Any Level
Some people carry their hatred like a badge of honor, but we all breath the same air, bleed red and none of us are better or have greater privileges in the eyes of God. We all will walk through the same door called Death. There are no advantages to being a racist or causing your fellow human brother or sister pain over the matter. Racism is an ugly nasty learned behavior and it is time for it to go the way of the dinosaur because too many people are being hurt by it. It’s utter nonsense. Hurricane Harvey came through Houston and did not care what race color or creed card you carried. He flooded without prejudice the rich, the poor, the homeless and did not stop only in poor or middle class subdivisions. He damaged homes from $50,000 to $1 million and humbled the great and the small in stature. As
Michael Jackson said, it did not matter whether you were “Black or White” Harvey made his presence know on every corner and nearly every street.
Food for Thought
What the idiot who wrote those sick words does not understand is how shallow and ignorant he truly is when it comes to modern human relations in America today. White people check me out at HEB, Hispanics cook the chicken I eat at Popeye and Church’s, Black folk take my tickets and serve food and drinks at Houston Astros games at Minute Maid Park and many diverse gentlemen from India, Pakistan and Muslim countries take my money after I pump gas. What’s my point? Many kinds of people make the world go round and we take for granted the simple fact that we trust them and we live, eat, work, drive and shop next to one another each and every day. Enter Hurricane Harvey and all of us had front seats to witness how Black folk, White folk, Asian folk, Hispanic folk and others scrambled and squeezed into rescue boats and trucks to get away from rising killer floodwaters. All races answered the bells to save lives trapped with the water rising and clock ticking away. In those moments, people become human and color lines just disappear... Amazing when you think about it.

Damage From Hurricane Harvey Property Value Matters By Roland Altinger
Many homeowners in the area have had property damage because of flooding or tornadoes from the recent hurricane. As you go about making repairs, the last thing you want to worry about is property taxes. But taking some simple steps now might save you money in the future. So here are some tips. First, it is important to let the appraisal district know that you have suffered property damage. You can do this by using the HCAD app on your smart phone, calling the appraisal district at 713.812.5805 or emailing us at help@hcad.org. The district is already aware of the general areas that flooded and will be looking at properties in those areas closely. Second, make sure you will receive any important information about your account and property taxes. You can do this by signing up for electronic delivery of your account documents or notifying HCAD of any temporary address changes. You can sign up for HCAD’s Electronic Filing and Notice System at www.hcad.org under Online Services > Owners. Address change forms are found on the website under Forms > Correction Forms. There are versions for homeowners or business owners. Writing FLOOD VICTIM on the top of either form will let us know this ad-
dress should be changed immediately. Third, if you have had damage and your property has not been repaired by January 1, you should file a protest for next year to make sure the value of your property is as accurate as it can be. It’s especially important to keep any repair receipts or estimates and any damage photos that you might have taken. An important date to be aware of is May 15, which is the last day you can protest your property value. This is also a good time to check your account online at www.hcad.org to make sure you have a homestead exemption. If you don’t have a homestead exemption, please be sure to file one because it can provide a substantial tax savings. If you are over 65 or disabled, you can file for another exemption which may give you additional savings. The exemption form is available on the HCAD website under Forms > Residential Exemption. If you are over 65 or disabled, you also can file for a tax deferral, which will postpone your tax payments, or you can file to pay your taxes in installments. The tax deferral form is on the HCAD website under Forms > Affidavits. Installment payments can be paid quarterly and arrangements can be made through the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office. For The First Time In History, North Carolina Has 6 Black Female Police Chiefs “We’ve broken a glass ceiling.”
Six black women currently hold the title of police chief in North Carolina, marking the first time this has happened in state history, according to WRAL. Among them are Raleigh’s Cassandra Deck-Brown, Durham’s C.J. Davis, Morrisville’s Patrice Andrews and Fayetteville’s Gina Hawkins, all of whom spoke to the local station last week about their experiences being women of color in leadership positions within the force. The women opened up about what’s it like being in the male-dominated field and the obstacles they’ve overcome. Women only make up 13 percent of the police force in America, according to the National Center for Women and Policing. “We’ve broken a glass ceiling,” Deck-Brown told WRAL’s Lena Tillett. “So, becoming chief, the honor is knowing that somebody else has that opportunity to get there.” The women, who said they often feel the need to do more to prove their abilities to men who may doubt them, have over 100 years of experience among them. Andrews, who was sworn in to her position in Morrisville last year, was the fourth black female police chief appointed in her area. Others, like Hawkins, who began as Fayetteville’s police chief in June, became the first woman and first minority in the city to do so. The police chiefs recognize the existing tensions between cops and the black community and the unique challenges they face in building trust while keeping communities safe. The women acknowledged that compassion, empathy and communication
were among the key traits they display on the job - and that these qualities can contribute to a positive change in the way cops police communities, especially those where people of color are specifically targeted. “This is a paradigm shift in policing,” Deck-Brown said. “This is what 21st century [policing] looks like. All we need is the opportunity. Some do it better than others, but we need the opportunity.” As a mother of black children, Hawkins said she does her job while also reckoning with the racism that law enforcement officers can perpetuate. “We’ve always been of color,” Hawkins said. “We’ve always had those family members, and that conversation that we have with our family members and our friends doesn’t change because we happen to have our uniform on.” Black women have been among the fiercest leaders to call out racism in America, including Nakia Jones, a Black police officer from Ohio who issued an impassioned plea in a viral video she made in response to the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling in Louisiana last year. “It bothers me when I hear people say, ‘Y’all police officers this, y’all police officers that.’ They put us in this negative category when I’m saying to myself, ‘I’m not that type of police officer.’ I know officers that are like me that would give their life for other people,” Jones says in the video, going on to call out and condemn racist police officers. As Long as it’s ‘His-story’, there will always be a Problem!
M
alcolm X once made reference to a thought that is very true in nature. In it, he conveyed that
“History is a people’s memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals.”
I couldn’t agree with him more because it is a vital element of a person’s life to know who they are and where they come from. Animals are a set of species which have no knowledge of past existence of their beings. However, contrary to popular belief African-Americans are not animals! To that regard, we are not property either and should have never been considered as such. I often refer to an article that I have kept on my walls from, The Informer. The article was entitled,
“Congress still debating whether Negroes are individuals or property”.
For too long the scales of history have been unbalanced and important African-American facts and history in regards to the conception of these United States have been white-washed out of the American version of history. This is why I always refer to the term, “history” as “his-story”. That is part of the reason that my wife and I, have been on the scene telling anyone that we could reach about the actual history of our people in this country. So I want to state right here that, I’m all for people telling their history but the story has to remain balanced; in regards to all races and not just the so-called, “majority race”. Because if history is actually told, there is no American history, without the African-American history included. We MUST Understand that as long as it’s always the White man’s story told there will always be a problem in these United States. Because the White man did not build this country alone; in fact, the White man didn’t even discover America. America was
in existence and already operating as a society by Indian inhabitants, when Christopher Columbus sailed the seas to this shore of the universe. It wasn’t White men who worked from sun up to sun down, laying brick by brick, paving roads, creating inventions to modernize the American way of life as we know it today. Now one thing I will credit our White counterparts for is being great masterminds. With their businesslike and intellectual-mentality; they were able to take the products and inventions that Black folks made and they were able to market and capitalize off of them. There are so many Black inventors in the history of AfricanAmericans that it ought to be a sin and a shame. Back then, Black folks created methods to make their jobs easier, which made sense; considering they were the original laborers of this country. We hear about the overwhelming wealth of our White counterparts being passed down and inherited from generation to generation. However, there is rarely any credit attributed to the slaves and Black folks that used their minds and ingenuity to make that wealth a reality. So that’s why I state again as long as it’s just the White man’s history recorded and told throughout these United States; there will always be a problem. We MUST Understand that no one person, race, culture or ethnicity has arrived to where they are in America, alone. Anybody, who is anybody has sought after or retrieved something from someone else to get to where they are. My only problem is that, in many of those cases; it was actually Black folks that helped to lay the foundation and pave the way for our White counterparts in American History. Therefore, there is a much needed version which needs to be displayed, taught and symbolized in regards to the correct reflection of American History. This thing has to remained balance in my opinion, otherwise it is not actual history; it is simply “his-story”, as told by our White counterparts. Thus, when it is that way, there is always going to be a problem. By no means am I attempt-

ing to promote a prejudicial or racist mindset towards White folks, I am just merely stating that if true history is going to be told; the correct and complete version is what should be reflected. Black folks should have knowledge of the great assets that our ancestors possessed within this nation. Our children should know that they come from a race of people who were considered lower than other human beings; but even in the midst of what society labeled them as; they were still able to persevere through and make great contributions to a nation that never recognized them as people to begin with.

Concluding, I will just state that I have to agree with Morgan Freeman. He concluded that we don’t need a Black History month, because Black History is American history. This is why I implemented the concept within our publication that Black History should be honored 24-hours a day, 7-days a week and 365(6)-days a year. If the true history of our ancestors and even us was included within the history books of these United States and taught to our children and other students from varying backgrounds and ethnicities; there would be no need for a Black History month. So again I will state that as long as it’s “His-story”, there will always be a problem.

Bennett is considering filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept. for allegedly using excessive force on him during an incident. The police department has opened an internal affairs investigation of the incident. TX- 4
Bennett shared his experience in a post to Twitter on Wednesday morning, describing the chaotic encounter relating to a situation he was involved in on the way back to his hotel early on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 27 following the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas. According to Bennett, Las Vegas police singled him out among a group of people who were fleeing away from what sounded like gunshots. Bennett said a police officer ordered him to the ground, pointed a gun at his head and told him not to move or he would “blow my [expletive] head off.” He added that a second officer forcefully jammed his knee into his back, making it difficult for him to breathe, before handcuffing him and eventually putting him in the back of a police car. His life literally flashed before his eyes. “I felt helpless as I lay there on the ground handcuffed facing the real-life threat of being killed,” Bennett wrote. “All I could think of was ‘I’m going to die for no other reason than I am black and my skin color is somehow a threat.’ My life flashed before my eyes as I thought of my girls. Would I ever play with them again? Or watch them have kids? Or be able to kiss my wife again and tell her I love her? I kept asking the officers ‘What did I do?’ and reminding them that I had rights they were duty bound to respect.” He said the officers ignored my pleas and instead told me to shut up and then took me to the back of a nearby police car where I sat for what felt like an eternity until they apparently realized I was not a thug, common criminal or ordinary Black man but Michael Bennett, a famous

professional football player. “Equality doesn’t live in this country and no matter how much money you make, what job title you have, or how much you give, when you are seen as a ‘N-----,’ you will be treated that way,” Bennett wrote. “The system failed me. I can only imagine what Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Charleena Lyles felt.”

Bennett said the incident has strengthened his resolve to be an advocate for oppressed people. All the men and women mentioned by Bennett were brutally attacked or shot or killed by and lost their lives as a result their encounter with law enforcement.
“It sucks that the country we live in now sometimes you get profiled for the color of your skin. It’s a tough situation for me,” he told reporters this week commenting on the incident in Las Vegas. “Do I think every police officer is bad? No. I don’t believe that. Do I believe that there’s some people out there that are judging people on the color of their skin? I do believe that. I’m just focused on trying to push forward and keep continuously ... the quest for justice for people. Keep pushing the quality for oppressed people.”
Positive Reputation Bennett is a vocal character and widely known to use his celebrity in a positive light to bring attention to issues, but is not known in the NFL or public eye as a troublemaker – as evidenced by those who know his reputation. “Michael Bennett represents the best of the NFL -- a leader on his team and in his community,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said a statement in support of Bennett. “Our foremost concern is the welfare of Michael and his family. Whille we understand the Las Vegas police department will address this later this evening, the issues Michael has been raising deserve serious attention from all of our leaders in every community.” Goodell, who has cracked down on negative impacts of bad behavior on the NFL brand, said he will support Bennett and all NFL players in promoting mutual respect between law enforcement and the communities they loyally serve and fair and equal treatment under law. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll also supports Bennett and said the incident should be a wake up call for police and communities across the country given the circumstances of the incident. “What happened with Michael is a classic illustration of the reality of inequalities that are demonstrated daily,” Carroll said in a press conference. “May this incident inspire all of us to respond with compassion when inequalities are brought to light and allow us to have the

In his latest twists, Bennett made it known that he would support not standing during the national anthem to further elevate awareness of racism and violence in the wake of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. He also supports the same social and racial injustices in American society raised by former NFL free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Unfortunately, the talented quarterback is currently out of the league and has been unsuccessful in his bid to land a spot on any NFL roster sign because of the views and issues he raised surrounding the national anthem and social consciousness and awareness. Closing Sobering Thoughts Bennett was not arrested or charged in the matter. However, he said he is thankful that the situation did not result into something even more tragic. “So I’m just lucky to be here right now to be able to continuously fight for people, fight for the equality of all people regardless of their color, regardless of their gender,” he said. “I’m just lucky to be here to be able to speak about it. The department of Justice’s failure to prosecute this officer only emphasized the lack of respect for minorities in this country. Which prompted people to protest in New York City, and many other metropolis’ across the country.
Chapter 13- The Murder of Tamir Rice
November 22, 2014, Cleveland, Ohio, twelve-yearold Tamir Rice was murdered by a police officer. Why? Because he was a White child playing with a toy gun.
Therefore, when a “concerned citizen” called 911 and informed authorities of a “possible” case of a child with a gun, the incompetent dispatcher failed to inform the responding officer that the gun was “possible” a toy gun. So, within seconds of these overzealous responding officers pulling up to the scene, shots were fired, and young Tamir has been executed. Clearly this is yet another example of the different policing standards for Blacks and Whites. The investigation following this incident cleared the murder of Tamir Rice as a justifiable homicide. Once again proving that the authorities don’t believe that… White Lives Matter.
Chapter 14- The Assassination of Walter Scott
It is reported that Mr. Garner was selling loose cigarettes when he was approached by NYPD officers. During the confrontation, an officer chose to forego conflict resolution attempts to deescalate the situation, and choose instead to escalate the encounter by applying an ILLEGAL choke hold on Mr. Garner.

Thanks to the citizen’s recording of the entire incident going public, the officer was eventually charged with murder. Still, this incident is indicative of the number of people sworn to protect and serve who refuse to see that…. White Lives Matter.
In this nation, young boys have been playing with toy guns longer than anyone can remember. (Cowboys and Indians, Cops and Robbers, military games, etc.) Unfortunately for Tamir, he was not cognizant of the overall social climate of this nation, nor the racial stigma attached to it. That is if you’re a young White male, you are guilty of some type of criminal behavior.
As the choke hold was being administered, Mr. Garner uttered the words, “I can’t breathe”. This utterance was caught on tape, and was heard by the officer that was administering the choke hold as well as the accompanying officers. Still, the officer administering the choke hold did not loosen his grip, nor did any of the other officers do anything to intervene.
Once Mr. Scott pulled the vehicle over, he immediately exited the vehicle and fled. A foot chase ensued. All of which was recorded on the patrol car’s dash camera.
This planted evidence was the officer’s own taser. It was intended to support the lie that the officer concocted to say that he feared for his life.
Also, I expect for these illustrations to bring clarity to all of you who fight against understanding our stance against injustice.
On July 17, 20014, an unarmed New York native, Eric Garner, was murdered by the hands of a NYPD officer.

Yet, unbeknownst to the officer, a citizen was recording the entire incident on a cellphone assassinating an unarmed White man, but it also shows said officer planting evidence beside the lifeless body of Mr. Scott.

Which landed him in prison at the age of 24, when most young men and women are just starting to live life and start their careers. For him, little did he know GOD had a blessing in store and his career would just be getting started to become an artist/ activist and book writer. While incarcerated he put together 3 exhibits and a single piece, plus he has written a book based on his artwork entitled “What If”. One of his projects is a 48-piece illustrated entitled “Walk A Mile In Our Shoes And You Will Understand From Whence We Came”, Illustrations called “Endangered Species”, a 3-piece illustration entitled “The Greatest”, and a single called “Hunting Season”. His greatest work of art is arguably “Walk A Mile In Our Shoes”, because what it portrays is the Black EXPERIENCE in a different way. In creating this exhibit, he seeks to show a mirror effect to Caucasians of what the Black EXPERIENCE looks like. Mr. Walker’s pictures have been created with the sole intent to invoke a thought in all who refuse to understand the plight that Blacks have had to endure in their experience from slavery up until now. Mayor Turner Proposes 12-Month Tax Increase For Harvey Recovery
HOUSTON- Mayor Sylvester Turner is proposing a temporary tax increase of 8.9 percent that he says will help with recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey. The increase, which would only be for 12 months if it is approved by the Houston City Council, would raise about
$113 million toward the city’s recovery.
The city is expecting about 80 to 90 percent reimbursement from FEMA, which means the city has to come up with the remainder of the cost of rebuilding.

The proposal comes as many whose homes were flooded are still working to remove debris and assess the damage through their insurance companies, and through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. If approved by the city council, it would go into effect in January 2018, and would increase property tax values from 58.64 cents per $100 valuation, to 63.87 cents, or about $117 per year on a home valued at $225,000. Texas Expands Food Benefits for Harvey Victims
AUSTIN- Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will begin offering disaster food relief, commonly known as D-SNAP, for victims of Hurricane Harvey starting Wednesday, September 13. The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides short-term food benefits for eligible families recovering from a disaster. D-SNAP is available to eligible residents of the counties with a federal disaster declaration and weren’t receiving benefits through regular SNAP at the time of the disaster. “The devastation from Hurricane Harvey will impact Texas families for years to come,” said Governor Abbott. “In this time of need, this program will help Texans get back on their feet faster, as they will have one less thing to worry about. The State of Texas will continue do everything it can to help Texans rebuild their lives as quickly as possible.” Texas HHSC will begin offering the benefits in stages, beginning with an 11-county area that can be served through the health and human services offices in those counties. Larger-population sites, such as in Houston and Corpus Christi, will launch in the coming days with special sites to accommodate large volumes of people who would not be able to be efficiently served through a local HHS office. “We have Texas families who lost everything,” said Texas HHS Executive Commissioner Charles Smith. “This puts a card in their hands

Nothing is more important than feeding and taking care of our families.” Residents of the initial 11-county area must apply in person. Applications will be taken for those counties based on a rolling alphabetical order between Sept. 13 and 19. Common types of verification include a driver’s license or other governmentissued photo identification. Eligible households will receive up to two months of benefits when their cards load. Commission Set To Rebuild Texas
AUSTIN- Governor Greg Abbott announced the Governor’s Commission to Rebuild Texas, which will be led by Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp. The Commission will oversee the response and relief effort between the state and local governments to ensure victims of the storm get

The Commission will also be involved in the rebuilding process, focusing on restoring roads, bridges, schools and government buildings in impacted communities. “Although the storm is over, the recovery process is just beginning, and it will require a Texas sized response,” said Governor Abbott. “This new commission, led by Chancellor Sharp, will ensure victims get everything they need, and seamlessly provide resources to these devastated communities. Texas will not rest until this process is complete, and I thank Chancellor Sharp for his leadership on this commission.” In addition to today’s announcement, Chancellor Sharp will join the Governor in traveling to regions impacted by Harvey to meet with local officials regarding the needs of their communities. During their meetings, Governor Abbott and Chancellor Sharp will also receive on-site briefings on the current response efforts in these areas and the ongoing recovery process. State agencies in Texas will also play a major role in coordinating and collaborating with the Governor’s Commission. FEMA List of Hotel/Motels Weakest Link in Recovery Congresswoman Demands Compliance with Transitional Shelter Assistance Program
HOUSTON- ‘Houston Strong’ may apply to everyone who has reached in their pockets to give millions to help Houstonians recover. It also applies to all who have volunteered to provide food to displaced families or clean flood damaged property, but it appears that Strong “Love” falls short when it comes to many residents needing transitional shelter assistance. FEMA designated hotels and motels are just not stepping up and doing their part to help soften the blows of thousands left homeless and who are severely hurting stricken and affected by the wrath of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey. That lack of compassion has raised the ire of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who is calling for the FEMA approved lodges to do their part and accept FEMA vouchers now without prejudice.
The Clarion Call for Service/Action
Jackson Lee released a scathing statement about the reports hotels on FEMA’s list are turning away Hurricane Harvey victims. “During this time of immense challenge, we must remember that we are all Houstonians. No one in need should be denied a place of refuge,” she said.“Throughout my district, I have met with seniors and other Hurricane Harvey victims who have been turned away from hotels that have agreed to participate in FEMA’s emergency housing assistance program. To those establishments, my message is simple. They need to open their doors and allow people with FEMA registration numbers to have rooms.” Jackson Lee is a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.
She is also leading the charge and calling for the formation of a Special Home Crisis Team to address the needs of seniors who are victims of Hurricane Harvey. “During this time of tremendous devastation, many seniors have been hit particularly hard. Many of them live on fixed incomes and alone, and have found it difficult to secure temporary housing including hotels,” she said. “Therefore, I am calling for the formation of a “disaster home crisis team” that will cleanout seniors’ homes and get them on the road to recovery.” Residents in Houston and Harris County have suffered devastating and monumental losses due to the story and with hundreds of thousands affected, there is a crisis in providing for the immediate housing needs for people whose homes are uninhabitable. “Because many seniors who live alone and on fixed incomes have been hit particularly hard, we must make a special effort to provide them with the assistance they need to find housing and recover,” Jackson Lee said.

The cost of the damage has been staggering. The Texas Department of Safety estimates that over 48,700 homes and 500,000 cars have been destroyed. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. The Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) Program is set up to provide short-term lodging assistance for evacuees who are not able to return home for an extended or indeterminate period of time following a disaster. There is a lack of awareness… and you don’t know what you don’t know. You can’t dream or be what you’ve never been exposed to or seen enough of.”
C-STEM Teacher and Student Support Services, The Health Museum, and ABB worked together to provide kids the opportunity to be informed about the power of electricity. Dr. Reagan Flowers, founder of C-STEM, which is a non-profit organization that was founded over 16 years ago, which focuses on providing enriched experiences for students and teachers in the states of communications, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These areas of interest have many economic opportunities that are available, but there is lack of participation with minorities, specifically African Americans that are not participating in those economic opportunities. With that being said, Dr. Flowers takes great pride in helping kids explore every opportunity that may not be offered to them. “That is my daily passion…demystifying stem, getting kids comfortable with it, and giving them the exposure that they may not have been given due to their economic situation, circumstance, or even where they attend school,” expressed Flowers. There are a lot of factors that impact why minorities aren’t taking advantage of STEM opportunities. According to Dr. Flowers, one reason is exposure. “A lot of minorities are still in situations where they are first generations in their family. There
In order to provide kids with an exciting experience, a community partner was responsible for making the camp become a reality. “It was a genius idea…we have a great partner, who is ABB, which is the largest global technology in the world who actually looked us up, admired the work we are doing, and said we want to invest with you. They said we want you to work with kids during this time of brain drained when they are not really doing anything stem focused in the summer months, and kids who may have parents who can’t afford to pay for them to go to a camp, and to really give them a valuable experience.” Dr. Flowers noted that ABB not only lit the fire for the camp to happen, but they also provided funding as well. In addition, Dr. Flowers made it known that “Studies show that children lose at least two months of knowledge gained during the school year,” so this camp was very important in order to keeps the minds of children stimulated until they return to the new school year. From this camp, Dr. Flowers wanted these kids to be empowered. “I want them to be self assured in terms of what they can do. I want them to dream, invent, and be creative. There is a challenge that they can move forward from the camp with a DIY (do it yourself) kit that each of them are provided, and it’s a challenge that’s associated with that, which is to create a public service announcement using circuit in a very creative and innovative way that gets the message out about saving endangered species…kids are going to be selfdirected, take the challenge beyond the camp and stay engaged…

It's hard to believe the encampment is gone. But it may be the best bet going for the 70 some odd homeless people who once considered it home. Before the Hazmat cleanup of this particular tent encampment, the City of Dallas went out of its way to make sure beds were going to be available elsewhere to this population of the homeless. 100 available temporary beds were identified under what are considered private city partners, at CitySquare, Austin Street, the Bridge and Dallas Life. And because they are private city partners, some of them have the right to refuse shelter to individuals with prior felonies.
Because of its proximity to the former tent city encampment and services it has extended to the homeless, the Cornerstone Baptist Church has agreed to allow its premises to be used as an assessment site. Service providers and social workers are able to sit with homeless individuals and assist them with coming up with a plan to help them regain control of their lives, starting with transportation to the shelter of their choice and storage of their belongings until they are able to reclaim them. If the assessment reveals the individual is HIV positive, or has a psychiatric disorder, there are funds which have already been set aside for housing and rental assistance. According to Charletra Sharp, the Managing Director of Homeless TX - 10
Solutions, about 14% of the un-sheltered population has been identified as having mental disorders. While the city is implementing it's plan to fix the homeless problem, resident and business owner, Brother Thomas Mohammed stated there is another trend the city needs to address immediately - Panhandling. Brother Mohammed said, “The pan-handling has become very aggressive. They have ventured out onto the South and MLK Boulevard demanding money from shoppers in the area and motorists. When the motorists exiting the highway at MLK and I-45 stop at the light, if the panhandlers don't get any money from them, they will bang on the windows or kick the car. Now that the tent city encampment is gone, they are sleeping in front of businesses, and on benches on the Boulevard.” The City of Dallas actually has an Aggressive Pan-Handling Ordinance, which gives officers the right to arrest aggressive panhandlers and issue Class C Misdemeanors. One of the behaviors cited as being aggressive, is when an individual blocks another person's path as they are walking, which sort of forces them to give the beggar something so they can move out of their way. Brother Thomas Mohammed says he would like to see this ordinance enforced in the South Dallas area. According to him, it only works downtown. For this ordinance to work in the South Dallas Area business owners have to work with the Dallas Police Officers to rid the area of this problem. They’ve been receptive and excited about the learning experience that has been provided to them.” Although the camp is over, CSTEM is now getting ready for the biggest event that they have every year, which is the National CSTEM Challenge, which takes place during the academic year. They have developed their new curriculum for kids to experience their eight modules which includes, robotics, mural sculpting, photography, film making, debate, and animation, and kids Pre K-12 have an opportunity to create project solutions to a real world problem that will be given to them. continuing to stick to her plan by soliciting the help of faith-based organizations in the community, and not just on a voluntary basis. She realizes many of these organizations already have a relationship with the homeless population, stating “Faith based organizations can go places the City Government cannot go. Homeless people often say, 'I'm going to talk to Sister So and So because I know they will feed me and I can get cleaned up'.”In the coming weeks, the City will be seeking out new partnerships with non-profit organizations to increase the number of services they are able to offer this segment of the population. Also, if there is some sort of way they can help with data collection on the homeless, through HMIS, it will make it easier for the city to get funding, because they will be able to identify those areas where there is the most need. It's definitely one thing to sit and plan the future of the homeless from an office, and another to be in the midst of the homeless daily as trends which were not previously considered occur, causing a rethinking of the original plan. Fixing the homeless problem is going to involve the city partnering with the right types of non-profits to get more immediate feedback as to what is or isn't working once the City's plan is in full swing. Our hope is for the City of Dallas to come together with those individuals working in trenches of the community to make sure solutions to the homeless problem are taken care of expediently. FEMA Hiring Texas Residents for Hurricane Harvey Recovery Jobs AUSTIN – In partnership with the State of Texas, FEMA is hiring workers across the state for administrative, logistical and technical jobs related to hurricane recovery. Those hired will join the recovery team – local, state and federal workers, voluntary agencies and community organizations – already in place. Through temporary local employees, FEMA gains valuable community insights, provides jobs and puts Texans to work helping Texans. Jobs posted recently pay between $14 and $34 per hour. Some of the jobs include: administrative support assistant, civil engineer, communications specialist, construction cost estimator, courier, crisis counselor, customer service specialist, environmental specialist, floodplain management specialist, graphics specialist, hazard mitigation outreach specialist, historic preservation specialist, registered nurse and voluntary agency liaison, among others.
