R E M A I N S I N F U L L E F F E C T T O DAY Letter from Publisher Roy Douglas Malonson: We have been overwhelmed with support from the community in response to my last editorial in regard to the backlash received on the decision to remove two racist statues in Houston public areas, and place one of them -- The Spirit of The Confederacy – in the Houston Museum of African American Culture. HMACC CEO Emeritus John Guess said placing the statues in the museum will help discuss the “difficult conversations” about race and culture. We don’t need to preserve them; we need
to destroy them as what they stood for have destroyed Blacks for generations. Enough is enough! And for anyone who is in favor of placing the Confederate statue in HMAAC, I feel you need to read the “Mis-Education of the Negro,” by Carter G. Woodson. If you did, you would see just how many of us are still trapped in a slave mentality. In “The Mis-Education of the Negro,” which was published in 1933, Woodson was teaching us how Blacks were historically brainwashed into accepting white ideologies, which still
governs how many of us live today. Uncle Tom-ism is just as alive today as it was then. Blacks, back then, were taught to be dependent on Whites, rather than learning how to do for themselves. It was all a matter of control, dating back to the “House nigger” mentality and loyalty to “Massa.” Woodson said, “When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his ‘proper place’ and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go
without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary.” Do you understand what Woodson was saying? He was explaining how some Blacks were “kept in their place” so much, that even if they had a taste of freedom or free will, they would still not get out of line. They would “find” a way to still follow the White Man’s rules. This kind of thinking will forever keep us in a place of servitude or inferiority when it comes to

WARNING TO BLACK FATHERS We’d love to tell you “Happy” Father’s Day, but in this day and age, we feel the need to just say “Congratulations, you’ve made it another year.” In the words of Charles S. Dutton in the movie Menace 2 Society, “the HUNT is on.” They are hunting Black men and killing them for sport, it seems. They are driving you out of businesses, emasculating you in front of your women, chasing your sons while they peacefully jog in neighborhoods, or walk home at night with a bag of Skittles and a bottle of Arizona Tea. They are telling the world that “Black Baby Daddies ain’t sh**” and they make you HATE the women you procreated with, thanks to the good old Attorney General who steps in to force you to do what you should have done on your own -- provide for your kids! Maya Angelou didn’t write a poem for you; it might have been hard to find the proper words to say. But on this day, and every other day, we say, KILL THE MYTHS, do what Black men were put on this Earth to do. KEEP GRINDING, KEEP SHINING, KEEP MOVING and SHAKING. Keep GOD FIRST, keep BUYING BLACK, keep EDUCATING our youth and keep BUILDING your communities by PURCHASING property. KEEP VOTING the GOOD ones IN and the BAD ones OUT. Keep making a way out of no way and CHECK on your kids AND your neighbors’ kids. Keep LOVING those Black women who will forever have your backs. The WARNING comes for those who don’t recognize that we, as a people, must take ownership of our lives, united in strength, and proudly represent our BLACKNESS to the fullest. LEAD YOUR FAMILIES, BLACK MEN! Now, we say... HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Youth scream out, ‘We are not our ancestors! I don’t know whether to walk tall or sag my head. I don’t know whether I should be encouraged by the above picture or should I be disheartened and discouraged. I do not know whether I should be bristling with pride or shrinking with shame. That young lady with the incendiary sign is very probably your grandchild or grandniece or daughter. We feel the righteous indignation. Jimmy Baldwin, author, and social prophet once said that to be black in America is to be in a constant state of rage. Trauma is internalized and cuts to the bone and marrow. Trauma can’t be repressed or suppressed forever. Billy Reece struck a chord and a nerve when he said at the MLK workshop that nothing is so dangerous as unresolved trauma. This trauma started before 1619, around 1441 when the Portuguese slavers arrived on the coast of Africa. Since 1441 we have been involved in a war, sometimes high intensity, sometimes low intensity but always defined by man’s destructiveness, man’s inhumanity to man. Sometimes white on black, sometimes black on black. Did the little sister just accuse the ancestors of being cowards and wimps, fading and withering before oppression?
Did she know about how our ancestors fought back during the red summer of 1919? Did she know that our ancestors jumped overboard from the slave ships into the jaws of sharks? Did she know that that between 1865 and 1910 that there were 3500 recorded lynching’s of black people in the US? Did she know that we just didn’t sit on a stump and sang strange fruit on southern trees, we organized and protested? Did she know that while we were shuffled as cattle into floating dungeons that we were singing BEFORE I will be a slave, I will rather be dead and in my grave? Does she know of TITANS Nancy Helen Burroughs and Ida B. Delaney? They put in the work and were greater than the Gods. These sisters took the antilynching fight to the dark forces and had to flee for their own lives? Countless John Browns and Nat Turners kept the mighty freedom candle lit and beaming like the North Star. Where did my little sister get her information about the lack of fight among our ancestors? BECOME A BLACK FUTURES THINK TANK BY EDUCATING YOUR PEERS ABOUT OUR SANKOFA moments. Have you researched local icon ADA EDWARDS and SHAPE center leadership in the fight for justice for Ida B. Delaney., a grandmother and mother who was murdered by a deranged off duty policeman in Houston in 1989? Maybe I am insulted and representing a thinskinned group of old timers but if you are criticizing the ancestors, at least do the investigation.
Did the little sister not accuse the ancestors of not being courageous but stated that she represented a generation that had the means to retaliate? Fire hoses, c a t t l e prods and dogs would not deter her nor civil disobedience. I want my little sisters and brothers to know that Malcolm did say ANY MEANS NECESSARY AS LONG AS IT IS INT E L L I G E N T LY DESIGNED Nevertheless, my little defiant sister is part of the solution and not the problem? She reminds me of myself at 18. Perhaps, we are the biggest part of the problem for not having Freedom Schools that would teach her our story. The Nigerian saying is true. If children do not feel the warmth of the village, they will destroy the village seeking the warmth that they were denied. Part of our challenge is to channel the destructive volcano power of the denizens of the streets. Help me find this 100-pound bundle of intelligence and energy. Our message to her is that this is truly your moment, our moment, George Floyd family, Eric Garner, Trayvon and Tamir Rice’s family moment. Remember, we don’t want to bring down a monster by becoming a monster. Focus on living for black people rather than dying for black people. Get with the veterans of the great struggles

of the 1960’s and 70’s and create the future by building it brick by brick. We cannot afford to lose our Moral compass= NORTH STAR. Study Birmingham and Albany during the 1 9 6 0 ’s . Children of past generations filled t h e jails. They were MAD, DIGNIFIED and DISCIPLINED. Keep your righteous anger and unleash it to build a MORE PERFECT UNION.

Mis-Education, cont’d Blacks and Whites. This kind of thinking will always allow White people to think that they can BEAT us for whatever they want, and we will THANK them for it later. That’s what preserving those statues mean to me! It says we are THANKING Whites for BEATING AND KILLING US! When will we stand up for ourselves? Like I said last week, Houston has been checkmating Black folks and ‘keeping us in our place’ ever since the Camp Logan riots. Do you even know what happened then? The Camp Logan Mutiny (also called the Houston Riot of 1917), historically shook race relations in the city and created conditions that helped to spark a statewide surge of wartime racial activism. It came about after 156 soldiers of the Third Battalion of the all-black Twenty-fourth United States Infantry Regiment were brought to Houston’s Camp Logan, which is now the Memorial Park area. Those soldiers became bothered after seeing members of the Houston Police Department constantly harass members of the local black community, and the black soldiers attempted to intervene. That led to a bloody night, which resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians, five policemen, and four soldiers. The re-
maining soldiers were tried at three courts-martial for mutiny. Nineteen were executed, and 41 were sentenced to life imprisonment. After that, the city of Houston has made sure that it’s kept a tight leash around the necks of Blacks it felt were a threat. The protests in our city do not resemble whatsoever the protests we are seeing across the nation right now. Back to our miseducation…. Woodson spoke about how African Americans are often influenced to become a “good negro” in order to become successful, and this ideology urges them to downplay their “blackness” to advance in the social ladder. Woodson also discussed how Blacks are separated from the truth of their actual contributions to history due to it being “white-washed.” White people have historically taken credit for important contributions from Black people, making themselves feel more superior. When it comes to education, Woodson said, “The program for the uplift of the negro in this country must be based upon a scientific study of the negro from within to develop in him the power to do for himself what his oppressors will never do for him.” But Blacks seeking higher education were often told there would be no job opportunities, or they were “not fit” for certain fields, should they choose to study

them. Just another way to keep us in our place. Woodson felt some Blacks had lost sight of a common goal. He said in “our socalled democracy, we are accustomed to give the majority what they want rather than educate them to understand what is best for them. We do not show the Negro to overcome segregation, but we teach them how to accept it as final and just.” Woodson emphasized the importance of Blacks knowing their history and embracing their culture. He believed that Blacks have come to hate their history due to slavery and being treated unfairly, but are strongly taught to learn and respect other cultures’ history. So, when it comes to those racist statues, it seems to me that we are trying to embrace and excuse the White man’s past - which was rooted in these instances of hate -- and making it a part of our “pride” in survival. We have overcome a lot, and as you can see, we have a much longer way to go, so placing that statue in our museum is not the right thing to do. Blacks should not stand behind that decision. Have more respect for your ancestors, and yourselves. I won’t stop fighting on the side of right when it comes to our people. End the silence. Demand respect. - AANI
