AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, DIVERSITY OR TOKENISM?

By: Roy Douglas Malonson

How many times have we heard this phrase, “I’m not a racist, I have many Black friends,” and have you taken a good, long look at the person who is making the statement? If they are a president or politician, what is the background of their cabinet or executive team? If they are an employer, what is the racial and ethnic make-up of their staff ? If they are the head of a sports organization, where there are plenty of Black athletes, how many times have they “taken a knee” with their players in support of their religious, social or patriotic beliefs? If they are the head of a major motion picture network, how many times have they supported Black film makers with big budget box office opportunities? How many times have you seen true support of Blacks without hidden agendas? There are plenty of companies who have little to no African Americans in leadership roles. We live in a sad day and age when, every time we look around, Blacks are finally being hailed as “the first” in the company’s history to earn a certain title. Yes, while

it is a victory, the sadness comes that it took so long to get there. Look at Colin Kaepernick, who was Black-balled for bringing attention to the social injustices of America, tired of seeing innocent Blacks involved in modern-day lynchings by authority figures. We had to lose too many lives, like Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd before the NFL would even make a half-baked Public Relations campaign in response to the protests. Yet, Kaepernick remains on the outs. That speaks volumes. And film makers like Spike Lee had to use personal funds to create movies Blacks wanted to see, all because no major backers would invest in Black movies fearing they were not profitable. They really didn’t even believe we could draw major crowds (with the exception of Will Smith and Eddie Murphy) until Chadwick Boseman became a global phenom as Black Panther. President Joe Biden appears to be on a mission to “right the wrongs” of politics by making a racially diverse cabinet, representing people from all walks of life. But even as Diversity cont’d page 7

The Senate has confirmed Wally Adeyemo as the first Black Deputy Treasury Secretary in America. Adeyemo is the latest to join the Biden administration, aiding Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen — the first woman to hold that role. “Wally is everything the Treasury Department needs right now: He Adeyemo cont’d page 3 has spent his career

Bad Day Experiences: Mass Murders The spiritual and structural-functional breakdown of the nuclear family structure has produced untold and unforeseen consequences. The ungodly/misguided belief that skin-color gives an individual sup e r i or it y - r i g ht s is a spiritually dangerous/destructive belief-system. Every human being is a Child of God, and human-beings should never forget that spiritual fact of human existence, because: “Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” God is life and this is why faith must be taught and exampled in family structures, because faith pertains to all of human existence. Therefore, Christian Right Evangelical

Pastors must in their preachment substantiate this spiritual fact of human existence, because all of US have unforeseen faith in individuals and corporations that build creature comforts (houses, cars, etc.), therefore: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” All families should teach this spiritual-faith precept repetitiously to children in order to build a God conscience in them; whereby guns will not become the final arbiter of problem solving, and ultimately seen as GOD. Guns are instruments of negativity, not problemsolving tools, because guns only acerbate problems. Only individuals with a Godconscience understand this profound spiritual knowledge, and moreover, Jesus gave us a living spiritual example of GodConscience when he said to Peter: “Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” This spiritual knowledge applies to any instrument of death that is in vogue at any given time-period.

Christian Right Evangelicals, GOP, and Trump Loyalists need to have a “looking glass selfencounter”: “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” America, there are too many among us without GodConscience, and they need to have a “Come to JESUS sustained encounter”. Turning the other cheek is allowing God to fight the battle, because: “The battle is not yours, but God’s”. The spiritual fight is between God and the devil, not between US; unless you desire to become one of the devil’s imps. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but principalities in high places and the spiritual darkness of this world. Washington is at a spiritual/political impasse, because the socalled Moral Majority (Christian Right Evangelicals) has seen fit to elect individuals to represent Mass Murders cont’d page 6

Killing a lie is hard, the longer a lie lives, the harder it is to kill The transmission of the pox is contagious. It often moves by community spread. Even if you observe the protocols, lies have legs and wings, often in your face, but more often slick and near invisible. The man or woman that doesn’t know that they have been infected or deny the evidence of infection is very sick. And so, we know that if the people around us share a false belief, the odds are exponentially greater that we will adopt that belief, even if it is absurd. Sharpshooter Steph Curry can defy logic in launching a sphere toward and consistently through a cylindrical hoop from

40 feet away, yet deny the moon landing. Flat earthers think that the Earth is not a globe that is curved, despite the views from the Apollo craft. Galileo, in possession of the telescope was sentenced to life imprisonment because his views contradicted the ignorant church leaders. Some rappers think that because we can’t see over the horizon in Galveston Bay that the Earth is flat. Astro physicist Neil de Grasse Tyson clarion calls from his scientific podium do not dissuade the flat earthers from their fixed beliefs. There are sworn advocates of the theory that the Earth is 5,000 years old, and that planet Earth is the center of the universe. Fairytales must be acknowledged as fairytales. There are flat earthers that believe that the COVID-19 vaccines are sent from hell below and instruments of white supremacy in 2021. Believe it or not, black epidemiologists and other scientists researched and helped in the Killing a Lie cont’d page 6

In the process, he’s become a master of shuttle economic diplomacy, helping keep America’s economy strong at home and competitive abroad,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated. “Wally is also a tireless advocate for the working class. He helped build the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from its foundations after the Great Recession. Those values – and that managerial experience – will be a tremendous asset to Treasury now as we continue implementing the American Rescue Plan.” Yellen says she is confident that Wally will handle his mission as Deputy Secretary like he’s handled everything else during his career: with integrity and excellence. He was the first president of the Obama Foundation and also served during the Obama administration as the Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics from 2015 to 2016 and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. After graduating from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California in 1999, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 2009. Adeyemo served as the Director of African American Outreach for the John Kerry 2004 presidential campaign and was based in the San Francisco office. In November 2014, Adeyemo was nominated to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Markets and Development at the same time that the incumbent Assistant Secretary, Marisa Lago, was nominated to be a Deputy United States Trade Representative. He appeared before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs in September 2015, but the committee did not advance his nomination to the full Senate. The nomination was withdrawn by President Obama in December 2015. Adeyemo was instead selected to concurrently serve as Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and deputy director of the National Economic Council in 2015, serving until 2016. During his tenure, he was the President’s representative to the G7 and G20 and held several senior management positions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, including senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, as well as chief negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership’s provisions on macroeconomic policy. Adeyemo currently serves as a senior advisor at BlackRock. Previously he served as interim Chief of Staff for the firm’s CEO, Laurence D. Fink. On August 1, 2019, Adeyemo was selected as the first president of the Obama Foundation. In November 2020, it was announced that Adeyemo would be nominated to serve as United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Biden administration. On January 20, 2021, his nomination was submitted to the Senate for confirmation. A hearing before the Senate Committee on Finance was held on February 23, 2021. He was confirmed by the committee by voice vote on March 3, 2021 and by the full US senate on March 25, 2021, also by voice vote. --AANI

EDUCATIOIN LONE STAR COLLEGE NAMED OUTSTANDING DIVERSE ORGANIZATION By: N.L. Preston

HOUSTON – Lone Star College received the 2021 Diversity in Business Award from the Houston Business Journal for promoting and advancing diversity. The award honors organizations and individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to promoting practices that advance diversity and inclusion. “Lone Star College is honored to be recognized for its efforts in making the college a place where both students and employees feel welcomed,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “We remain committed to reflecting the community we serve.”

LSC was one of five large companies (500+ employees) to receive this recognition. Honorees will be featured in a special publication and recognized at a virtual awards ceremony to be held March 25. In fall 2020, LSC welcomed more than 36,700 Hispanic students representing 43% of the total population. LSC also opened its doors to more than 25,500 White and 11,400 Black students representing 30% and 13% of the student population respectively. “We understand the importance of this issue,” said Head. “That’s why we recently hired Carlecia

resident until her death at 106 years old. White (born June 3, 1913) is recognized as a trailblazer, overcoming widespread perceptions at the time, “that neither women nor African Americans were qualified to fly airplanes.” She and her husband ran the Sky Ranch Flying Service, an airport and flight school for African American aviators. In 1936, she married Hulon “Pappy” White. Five years later, they relocated to Tuskegee, Alabama, where Hulon White worked as an airplane mechanic with the Tuskegee Airmen. White was inspired by a visit from Eleanor Roosevelt in 1941, after which Roosevelt encouraged her husband to let the Tuskegee Airmen fly in World War II. White began training there, flying a Taylorcraft airplane under the instruction of several Tuskegee Airmen. She earned her private pi-

lot’s license on March 26, 1946. After World War II ended, the Whites moved to South Houston. Together with Tuskegee Airmen Ben Stevenson and Elton “Ray” Thomas, they founded the Sky Ranch Flying Service in 1946. Located on the Taylor-Stevenson Ranch, the Sky Ranch Flying Service was an airport for Houston’s black community and provided charter flights as well as flying lessons. White was not an official owner, but was popular around the airport. Flying students often asked her to take them for rides, and she would sometimes play pranks on them in midair, taking them by surprise with stunts. Because travel by land exposed African-Americans to potential harassment or assault, she would sometimes fly from town to town with her niece to go shopping. Sky Ranch Flying Service closed when new laws restricted the use of the G.I. Bill and

She will be tasked with designing new ways to focus on Lone Star College’s culture and our commitment to student success.” In all, 53 companies were selected as honorees and divided into three awards categories: Outstanding Diverse Organizations, Outstanding Supplier Diversity and Outstanding Diversity Helping Hand. The Outstanding Diverse Orga-

nizations were also subdivided by company size. In addition to being honored by the Houston Business Journal, LSC has also been recognized as the #1 two-year college in the nation for the number of undergraduate Hispanic students by Hispanic Outlook Magazine and the #1 Hispanic-Serving Online Community College in Texas by TexasOnlineColleges.com. --AANI

caused business to slow. In April 2018 White was inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame (housed in Lone Star Flight Museum). In Houston, the Aviation Science Lab at Sterling High School was named in her honor. Principal Justin Fuentes called her “a powerful reminder to our students that they can be any-

thing they want to be and achieve anything they want to achieve. No one can stop them.” White received the Trailblazer Award from the Black Pilots of

America for her “pioneering spirit in forging a path to the field of aviation.” She died on September 15, 2019. --AANI

Every born again Christian knows that sin is sin, and that God hates sin. America needs a new spiritual-moral direction in order to embrace the spiri-

GREATER HOUSTON EDITION Diversity cont’d we applaud his movements and historic selection of Kamala Harris as vice president, some say she wasn’t the “best candidate,” but had the right look at the right time. Some people still question, is this a form of diversity ... or “forgotten” affirmative action, placing minorities in positions they’ve always earned, but have been cut out of? Or is this all a form of tokenism, using Blacks or other minorities to fit agendas in these times of unrest? Do you know the difference? As noted on HR Exchange, the term affirmative action was initially used in Executive Order No. 10925 signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, regarding the treatment of employees without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin. The Order was also expanded by President Lyndon Johnson in 1967 to also include women. Affirmative action is based on legal directives requiring federal contractors to measure employment practices and to develop a workforce

March 28, 2021 that is reflective of the community in which they work. Diversity is a more inclusive concept and includes people of various religions, marital status, sexual orientation, economic status, and a variety of other different states of being. Diversity is also considered a strategic business practice which continues to increase as distinctions among people in the workplace become more prevalent. Diversity and affirmative action deal with issues related to discrimination, but in different ways. They are complementary in function, but different in their origins and goals. While affirmative action focuses on taking positive steps to get individuals into the organization, diversity in the workplace works to change the culture within. During these days of racial and social unrest across America, “Diversity Officer” positions are being created at most major companies and organizations who are taking a bandwagon CYOA (Cover Your Own A$$) ap-

proach, not only for compliance reasons, but in an effort to “prove” to the public they have the best interest of employees in mind. LinkedIn data shows that the No. 1 D&I job title globally is diversity manager, with director of diversity coming in at No. 2, head of diversity at No. 4, and chief diversity officer at No. 6. The data also shows there was a dip in the number of D&I jobs posted immediately after the COVID-19 lockdowns, but that did a complete turnaround, with a major spike after the Black Lives Matter movement erupted with widespread protests in late May and early June. Suddenly, companies wanted to pull out their “Black cards” and show they were diverse. Then there’s good old tokenism, which is the practice of making only a symbolic effort to be inclusive to members of minority groups, especially by recruiting people from underrepresented groups in order to give the appearance of racial or sexual

equality within a workforce. Do you see how the “Diversity Officers” play right into this? While we, as Black people, are grateful for the advancements and inclusion on the rise today, many of us wonder how soon it will end. We live in a bandwagon generation, where people jump on what’s trendy at the time. While some people are protesting for racial and social justice, others are out in the picket lines because they want to be seen in the mix, oftentimes not even knowing what the protest is all about. And some politicians don’t stand for or with Blacks until they need the Black vote during election years. At the end of the day, in order to stop needing affirmative action and diversity officers, and put an end to the “tokens” being used for the okie dokie, we need to BUY Black, BUILD Black businesses, and continue to BE Black; proud, alert and unapologetic. -- AANI
