‘FATHER OF BLACK HISTORY’ By: N.L. Preston

HOUSTON - When Shepherd Manson Johnson took his rightful place in the Kingdom of Heaven, Pastor Murray G. Martin knew it was time for him to return home. Home was the place where he was groomed and nurtured by his mentor, Johnson, and Martin knew it was his duty to carry the torch the shepherd-less congregation still needed to light the way. The young pastor knows he can never completely fill the Shepherd’s shoes – and is not trying to - but wants to pay homage to the man he’s been looking up to as a father figure since he was 13 years old. While the church is still fighting to recover mentally and spiritually from the COVID-19, which took Johnson’s life, Pastor Martin is relying on his faith and renewed ideals to lead the congregation in a new direction. “I am excited and honored for the challenge to lead a great church with a wonderful history in the city and community,” Martin said. “I am honored to follow a man of The Shepherd’s stature. We can be all day talking about the legacy and trail he blazed on several platforms.” Martin is from Bay City, Texas, where he was
raised with his grandparents, before coming to Houston to live with his mother at the age of 13. The mother and son joined Holman Street Baptist Church, where he met Shepherd Johnson, who was a good friend of Martin’s grandfather, Pastor Rudolph Martin Sr. Martin and Johnson bonded instantly and, as he says, his path was set, or as others might say, his “calling” was already in the works. The young man graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, then enrolled at Texas Southern University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communications. He was licensed and ordained at Holman Street Baptist Church by Shepherd Johnson, who groomed him in ministry. Martin was Johnson’s assistant for about six years before returning to Bay City and Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Pastor for 14 years. “Now I’m back,” said Pastor Martin, who is also currently pursuing a Master of Divinity from Houston Baptist University. Even though “Black” history is “American” history, and should be celebrated year-round, the entire month of February is designated as the official month for people across the country to celebrate the accomplishments of a race of people who have been disenfranchised for generations. So, what is Black History Month and how did it all begin? In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, this celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February, to educate people of all ethnic and social backgrounds the meaning of the Black experience. Here’s more about the man who started it all. Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950)[1] was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African-American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the “father of black history.” In February 1926, he launched the celebration of “Negro History Week,” the precursor of Black History Month. Born in Virginia, the son of former slaves, Woodson had to put off schooling while he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. He graduated from Berea College, and became a teacher and school administrator. He gained graduate degrees at the University of Chicago and in 1912 was the second African American, after W. E. B. Never Forget The GOP’s objective is not societal unity and moral order: it seems to be my way or the highway! Their devilish desire is to have Americans forget that it was their perpetuation of White-Lies that is responsible for the racist governmental insurrection attack that occurred on January 6 at the U. S. Capitol. America is at a spiritual-signature crossroads: which way America? Societal unity or societal chaos and hellish destruction! Individuals who scream peace, peace without moral-legal accountability and civil order are hypocrites to the nth degree. The leadership mentality and governing policies of the GOP have been marching America toward an (US) Whites versus (Them) Minorities, Civil War scenario. GOP lawmakers want absolutely no personal moral and professional responsibility for the uncivil political governing state of affairs/ climate primarily created by them in Amer-
ican society. Question: who among GOP Politicians is redeemable? Republicans who have a problem with the cultural composition of American society are their own worst enemy, because, “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein.” If perchance you missed it in that scriptural verse just maybe you will understand it in this scripture: “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Individuals do not live forever. This is heavenly ordained. Spiritual moral stewardship of the earth is required of every individual. Stewardship of the earth for future generations is divinely ordained, because children are the future. Take a long hard look at what we are doing to the earth that God has given us stewardship over: climate change. Christian Right Evangelical Pastors can stop the spiritual-chaos and insane-confusion at any time simply by speaking and preaching the truth to lies, because the Bible teaches us: “Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be a partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” Because: “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” Now, we all spiritually understand
why Sunday morning worship services are the most segregated hour in American society: false doctrinal teaching and agreeing with lies. The GOP is no longer a principled Political Party, but a conspiratorial grievance Cult. When a political party elects “air-headed-individuals” to public service political offices, you get hot air and ungodly rhetoric, which in turn, leads to the destruction of democratic institutions through violence, because spiritual-intellectual discourse is not possible with “airheads.” America, if you truly understand how good God has been to US then you will appreciate this scriptural verse: “I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.” Make US worthy O’ Lord to live and love one another, because: “We hold these moral Truths to be self-evident that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Selah.

Black History Incarnate: James L. Conyers Jr. In Jersey City, New Jersey at the Margaret Hague Hospital on June 17, 1961, a son, James (Jim/Naazir) L. Conyers Jr. was born with joyful surprise to Mr. James L. Conyers Sr. and Mrs. Agnes Conyers. Naazir graduated from Henry Snyder High School in 1979 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts from Ramapo College. In 1983, he joined the oldest and coldest brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Zeta Nu Lambda chapter. He married Jacqueline Pierce in 1985, and the couple had two sons; James Sekou Conyers III and Fredrick Kamau Conyers. Naazir obtained a masters in Africana Studies from the University of Albany in 1984, studied Kiswahili, the Swahili language, at Cornell University in 1991, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in African American Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia in 1992. He spent time
at Columbia University within the Oral History Institute in the summer of 1995 and worked as a graduate faculty fellow which subsequently became a full professor of Black Studies and courtesy professor of history at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 2002, he moved to Houston, Texas, where his family now resides, as he became the director of the African American Studies Program and full professor of African American Studies at the University of Houston. “Naazir” became known as “Dr. Conyers.” Alongside teaching, Dr. Conyers had a heart for research which is reflected in the over 40 books he wrote and/or collaborated on. Dr. Conyers was the recipient of numerous accolades and awards over the course of his academic career. He was committed to his community and his faith as a loyal member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. James (Jim/Naazir) L. Conyers Jr. transitioned to the realm of the ancestors on Monday, January 25, 2021. As an accomplished author, philanthropist, scholar, impactful mentor, activist, father, and friend, he leaves an immeasurable legacy that has laid a foundation for generations to come. - AANI

CICELY TYSON DIES
The world has lost a true legend. Hollywood icon Cicely Tyson died at the age of 96. The pioneering African American actress -- who gained an Oscar nomination for her role as the sharecropper’s wife in “Sounder,” won a Tony Award in 2013 at age 88 and touched TV viewers’ hearts in “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” -was in the middle of promoting her new memoir, “Just As I Am,” when she quietly passed away. In a career spanning more than seven decades, she became known for her portrayal of strong Black women. Having appeared in minor film and television roles early in
her career, Tyson garnered widespread attention and critical acclaim for her performance as Rebecca Morgan in “Sounder” (1972); she was nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her work in the film. Tyson’s portrayal of the title role in the 1974 television film “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” based on the book by Ernest J. Gaines, won her further praise; among other accolades, the role won her two Emmy Awards and a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading
GERTHA BERLENA MITCHELL
Family and friends said goodbye to their beloved Gertha Berlena Mitchell, who died at the age of 98 on January 10. Berlena was born on February 20, 1922 to Charlie and Leader Hagans in Chatfield, TX, and is the second eldest of 11 children. She migrated to Houston, Texas in 1941 right after high school where she became a licensed beautician and home caretaker. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at The Fifth Ward Church of Christ. She met her late husband, Earlie Mitchell, and married him in 1945 and the couple had 5 children: Michael (deceased), Christopher, Ruth, Deborah
and Roseleta. Berlena played a part in the civil rights movement. In 1957, she became a Matriarch by being one of the first Black families to integrate the Church of Christ in the Kashmere Gardens community. Her church family often called her the second Rosa Parks. A life well-lived. Berlena’s funeral service was held Friday, January 22, at the North Houston Church of Christ. She will be truly missed. RIP. - AANI
Role. Tyson continued to act in film and on television in the 21st century. In 2011, she played the role of Constantine Jefferson in the awardwinning film “The Help.” She also played the recurring role of Ophelia Harkness in the legal drama TV series “How to Get Away With Murder” since the show’s inception in 2014, for which she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series five times. In addition to her screen career, Tyson appeared in various theater productions. She received a Vernon Rice
Award in 1962 for her OffBroadway performance in “Moon on a Rainbow Shawl.” Tyson also starred as Carrie Watts in the Broadway play “The Trip to Bountiful,” winning the Tony Award, the Outer Critics Award, and the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2013. Tyson was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2015. In November 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States. In 2020, she was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. Tyson’s memoir, “Just As I Am,” was published January

of intense racial violence that saw about 1,000 people, most of whom were Black, killed between May and September 1919. In the face of widespread disillusionment felt in Black America caused by the “Red Summer,” Woodson worked hard to improve the understanding of Black history, later writing “I have made every sacrifice for this movement. I have spent all my time doing this one thing and trying to do it efficiently.” The 1920s were a time of rising Black self-consciousness expressed variously in movements such as the Harlem Renaissance and the Universal Negro Improvement Association led by an extremely charismatic Jamaican immigrant Marcus Garvey. In this atmosphere, Woodson was considered by other Black Americans to be one of their most important community leaders who discovered their “lost history”. Woodson’s project for the
demic career was spent at Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, D.C., where he eventually served as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Woodson devoted the rest of his life to historical research. He worked to preserve the history of African Americans and accumulated a collection of thousands of artifacts and publications. He noted that AfricanAmerican contributions “were overlooked, ignored, and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them.” Race prejudice, he concluded, “is merely the logical result of tradition, the inevitable outcome of thorough instruction to the effect that the Negro has never contributed anything to the progress of mankind.” The summer of 1919 was the “Red Summer,” a time

26, 2021, and she was promoting the book during her final weeks. In an interview with CBS This Morning, host Gayle King Tyson asked how she wanted to be remembered, to which Tyson replied, “I’ve done my best. That’s all.” We salute her in all her greatness. RIP. - AANI
“New Negro History” had a dual purpose of giving Black Americans a history to be proud of and to ensure that the overlooked role of Black people in American history was acknowledged by white historians. Woodson wrote that he wanted a history that would ensure that “the world see the Negro as a participant rather than as a lay figure in history.” In 1926, Woodson pioneered the celebration of “Negro History Week,” designated for the second week in February, to coincide with marking the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The Black United Students and Black educators at Kent State University expanded this idea to include an entire month beginning on February 1, 1970. due to the pandemic and a congregation still in mourning. “It’s been tough because he passed away in the midst of the pandemic, dying from COVID. There are church members who are already wrestling with their own issues during the pandemic, then to lose your pastor - for some, the only pastor they ever knew - that in and of itself can put people in a tailspin,” Martin said. “Many are still grieving because, think about it, right now we are doing virtual worship, but the last time they were in the sanctuary he [Shepherd Johnson] was there.” We asked Pastor Martin more questions about plans for the congregation to move forward, and the progress of the country, as a whole. Q: Do you think the people in this country will ever get back to the way we once were - with churches or with businesses? A: I think business and faith will be the same. A few years ago, having an online campus was an option, now it is not an option because, in reality, there are people who may not ever come back after the COVID scare. We want to make sure we can service them and still reach them wherever they are. And I think with businesses, I think they will adjust their budgets, it can be most cost effective for some people to work at home. Q: With so many people growing tired and ready to get back to normal life, when do you think you will re-open the doors to the church building? A: We are people of faith, but also,

we don’t ignore the science. We have to walk in wisdom because we have older members in our congregation, and we don’t want to be selfish. We want to keep our people safe, so we are taking it slow, month by month. We are using this time to upgrade our technology so when people come back to our building, we will be ready for them. There is a new “web generation” of people who don’t want to be tied to a pew and a chair, so we have a way to still reach them. Q: What’s next for Holman Street Baptist Church? A: We are definitely going to build upon the programs and ministries that Shepherd Johnson already laid, but we are also going to venture off into some “new territory.” That’s our theme for this year. We are going to broaden our reach through the online/ virtual space, broaden the platform for our youth and young families, and also continue the work of building bridges in the Third Ward community. Q: Explain the “New Territory” concept A: It’s about reaching new spiritual heights and that either can be in the community and reaching levels that God wants us to. It’s about going to unfamiliar places and not get stuck in the familiar and the mundane and do the extraordinary because our God is extraordinary. Martin says they are all moving forward through prayer, and with the continued teachings of The Shepherd. May he continue to rest in peace. - AANI
