WIGRAM’S FLY BOX – Mick Hall & Jim Findlay

Today, anglers remember R.H. ‘Dick’ Wigram as one of the most significant figures in Australian fly fishing.
The Wigram era was a time of unspoiled waters, healthy trout populations, and abundant aquatic insects. It was the best of times for an angler such as Wigram. He was a genius in his field, observing, seeing, and translating his perception into patterns and methods. He was an outstanding fly tyer, one of the very best fly fishers of his generation, and a writer whose books are still celebrated for their technical, literary, and historical merit.
But little is recorded about the very core of his work tying traditional patterns, reworking patterns to suit local conditions, and designing new flies to imitate the insects he observed on and in Tasmanian waters. When he began his professional career in 1932, Wigram offered anglers a catalogue of 250 flies. He must have tied thousands of patterns in his time, including an unknowable number of his own designs. Regrettably, few records remain of his work.
Wigram’s Fly Box tells of Dick Wigram’s place in the story of Tasmanian fly fishing and lists 147 of the patterns he adopted, adapted, or developed.
The early chapters describe the evolution of Wigram’s iconic Brown Nymph, his work in adapting and developing mayfly and other aquatic insect patterns to suit local waters, and his role in creating representations of Tasmanian beetles. They tell of flies Wigram created for Great Lake and how fly tyers and anglers such as Woolley, Powlett, Cholmondeley -Pennell, and others helped shape Wigram’s thinking.
The later chapters feature 147 patterns from the pages of Wigram’s books, his Weekly Courier columns, diaries, notes taken from his fly tying courses, and other sources. Wigram tied some of the flies; Mick Hall, an internationally renowned fly tyer, tied m ost of the patterns for the book. Wigram’s Fly Box is an essential reference for all anglers.

Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers 11th Edition
By Russell Holmesby and Jim Main
This will be the 11th edition of the publication known as the Bible of footy. First published in 1992, it has sold over 120,000 copies in total.
The warriors who slogged it out on four suburban Melbourne ovals would never have dreamed that this would grow into Australia’s biggest national sporting competition with 18 teams spanning Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
Nor would they have thought that one day the competition would play a game in New Zealand or China, or would play games in a purpose built stadium under a roof. For Ben McKay and all those before him, those thoughts were non-existent. The age-old dilemma of how to get his hands on the ball and get a kick was first and foremost. Ben McKay is one of 1101 footballers who have just the one game next to their names. Surprisingly 20 per cent of all players will have careers that don’t extend beyond three games.
Footy is an ever-evolving game, and so too is this Encyclopedia as new facts constantly emerge and are added to the tales of players from long ago as well as those from today.
Len Beadell’s Legacy
By Ian Bayly
In June 1952, Len Beadell was called to a secret meeting in Salisbury, South Australia, and informed of the decision to explode an atomic bomb in Australia. He was set the task of finding an appropriate site. After exploring country to the west of Coober Pedy, he found an unnamed claypan (later called Emu) which the military approved as being suitable. Beadell was then asked to find a second site closer to the Trans Australian Railway. This second site was ominously called Maralinga (Aboriginal for thunder).
In November 1955, Beadell headed a group that became known as the Gunbarrel Road Construction Party. Despite their relatively slender resources, this group was responsible for the construction of a remarkable system of roads through remote, mainly desert country to the west of the Stuart Highway. This book describes the extraordinary adventures and difficulties faced by Len Beadell and his group. Beadell showed remarkable courage and resourcefulness during his long and arduous solo reconnaissance trips. It was on one of these that he came very close to losing his life in March 1958.

This is the Dupas story, of how a quiet, pudgy schoolboy became one of the most evil predators in Australian criminal history.
Since first publishing Elizabeth Woolcock’s tragic story – No Monument of Stone – extensive additional research by the author has uncovered much more evidence than was available at the time of his initial writing.
This book is also a tribute to the relentless pursuit of justice by Victoria police officers who followed the creed: we never forget that murdered people have families that need to know what happened.
This later book – Dead Woman Walking – now contains that information. Information that perhaps one day may instigate an official investigation into the case and consequently lead to a posthumous pardon being granted for Elizabeth, for being denied access to fair and impartial justice at her trial in 1873, and thereby being unjustly convicted and executed for a murder she did not commit.

Just watch the terrifying speedboat crashes shown over and over again in those “world’s worst” from on American TV and remember this: Over the last 80 years, 11 men have died in attempts to raise the world water speed record. One man, Australian Ken Warby, has done it and survived – the sole member of the world’s most exclusive club. The record he set – for the second time in 1978, still stands.

Only just retired, despite building a successor to his “Spirit of Australia” that had the potential to hit 700 km/h on water but was never raced, Warby is a living example of all the qualities that make a proud Australian. He drew up the design for his boat on the kitchen table, never deviating from his childhood ambition to be the world’s fastest on water. A man whose motto is “Just do it – just make it happen” – Warby in his astonishing life has over and over demonstrated his disregard for conventional mores about how things work.

They were certainly a ragtag bunch of men and they partied hard. But boy, could they play footy. In fact, over a four-year period, the team fielded by Carlton would win three premierships—winning 76 of its 98 matches for a winning percentage of 78 per cent—a feat which should surely rank the side next the modern-day powerhouses, the Brisbane Lions (2001-2004), Geelong (20072011) and Hawthorn (2012-2015). Remarkably, despite such outstanding successes, the Boys in Blue, as Parkin noted with his usual enthusiasm, are seldom mentioned when debate rages over who is the greatest football team in VFL/AFL history. Why is this side not included in the debate? Quantity
