It is always a pleasure and an honour for the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau to support the Hong Kong French Film Festival. Last year French Cinepanorama was extremely successful with record attendance and this 54th edition has all the ingredients to be another great showcase of French cinema with an impressive line-up of close to 50 movies all proposed with English subtitles and reflecting the full diversity of French creation!

With the opening film, "Couture" by Alice Winocour, we will celebrate the worldwide acclaimed know-how of France in fashion. With the musical comedy "Leave One Day", we will radiate with optimism and feel good spirit. With "A Second Life", we will immerse ourselves once more in the memorable Paris Olympic Games. With "The Piano Accident", we will be surprised by another facet of the surreal world of Quentin Dupieux. And with "Little Amélie and the Character of Rain", we will rediscover the joys and wonders of childhood. Moreover, as part of a celebration of the 130 th anniversary of cinema, a retrospective section will feature timeless classics such as "Children of Paradise" by Marcel Carné, "Queen Margot" by Patrice Chéreau or "Hate" by Matthieu Kassovitz.

We are also thrilled to count amongst the celebrity guests of this year’s festival, actor and director Gérard Jugnot. During an impressive career spanning 50 years, Gérard Jugnot has embodied the endearing character of the “average French” in all its complexity and dealt with many social issues with his legendary sense of humour. As he has been one of the most popular French cinema artists for decades, this edition of the festival will pay a tribute to his works by screening some of his greatest hits such as "Santa Claus is a Stinker", "Monsieur Batignole", and "The Chorus". We are also very proud to give the opportunity to Hong Kong audience to enjoy his latest acting work as a world premiere, "The Children of The Resistance", directed by Christophe Barratier.

Once more, the longest film festival in activity in Hong Kong will be a great opportunity for filmgoers in Hong Kong to enjoy France’s creativity in arts and culture!

法 國 駐 香 港 及 澳 門 總 領 事 館 如 既 往 地 榮 幸 並 高 興 支 持 香 港 法 國 電 影 節。 去 年 的 「法國電影節」創下歷年最高入場人次，成績斐然。今年第五十四屆同樣精彩可期， 近五十部法國電影將全數配上英文字幕，充分展現法國創作的多元面貌，勢必再度 成為法國電影的矚目盛會。

開幕電影《Couture》，由 Alice Winocour 執導，讓我們 同慶祝法國在時尚領域 享譽全球的專業技藝。《突然離去》這部音樂喜劇將為觀眾帶來滿滿的樂觀與愉悅 氣氛。《巴黎重生》則讓我們再次沉浸於難忘的巴黎奧運盛事。《鋼琴意外事件簿》 帶領我們進入 Quentin Dupieux 荒誕世界的另 面。而《愛美麗的奇幻漫遊》則讓 我們重新發現童年的喜悅與奇想。

此外，為慶祝電影誕生 130 週年，電影節特設回顧單元，精選多部經典名作，包 括 Marcel Carné 的《天上人間》、Patrice Chéreau 的《瑪歌皇后》以及 Matthieu Kassovitz 的《怒火青春》。

The HK French Film Festival presented by Alliance française is the oldest cinema festival in town. It has been running since 1972 without interruption. This new edition of the Festival, the 54th, celebrates the HK audience’s love for the French seventh art in a year that marks the 130th anniversary of the invention of cinema by the Lumière brothers in 1895!

Our teams have prepared an exciting program for the movie fans of Hong Kong in 2025 with a number of special events and cinema talents visiting Hong Kong as a highlight.

This year’s selection is a mix between a large 2025-film selection – with films only recently or not even released yet in France - and retrospectives on Gérard Jugnot, our godfather for this edition, and on 130 years of cinema.

In all, there will be more than 50 films: 30 of the year, 20 of retrospective.

This will offer a spectacular firework of French cinema in Hong Kong during the 3 weeks of our festival!

Gérard Jugnot is one of France’s most beloved and enduring actors, known for his warm screen presence, comedic timing, and deep connection with audiences across generations. Rising to prominence in the 1970s as a founding member of the comedy troupe "Le Splendid", Jugnot helped shape a new era of French popular cinema through cult classics like "French Fried Vacation" and "Santa Claus is a Stinker". His affable persona and everyman charm made him a fixture in French households, while his later work revealed a more nuanced dramatic range.

Jugnot’s career spans over five decades, encompassing acting, directing, and screenwriting. He has directed several successful films, including "Scout Always" and "Monsieur Batignole", the latter earning him critical acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of a man protecting a Jewish child during World War II. Internationally, he is best known for his role as Clément Mathieu in "The Chorus" (2004), a poignant drama about a music teacher who transforms the lives of troubled boys through song. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and became a global success, introducing Jugnot to audiences far beyond France. In 2005, he was nominated for the César Award for Best Actor for "Boudu", further solidifying his reputation as a versatile performer capable of balancing humor and humanity. His latest film, "The Children of The Resistance" (2024), continues his engagement with historical themes and moral storytelling, portraying the courage and solidarity of youth during wartime. Jugnot’s enduring appeal lies in his ability to evoke empathy, laughter, and reflection—making him a cherished figure in both French cinema and international film culture

Garance Marillier

is a French actress born in Paris in 1998. She began her artistic journey studying music and theater before transitioning to film. Her breakout role came in 2016 with "Raw", directed by Julia Ducournau, earning her a César nomination. Marillier has since appeared in films like "Pompei" (2019), "Madame Claude" (2021), and "Marinette" (2023), where she portrayed soccer star Marinette Pichon. In 2025, she took on the role of Christine in "Couture", a film by Alice Winocour, further showcasing her talent for complex, emotionally rich characters.

Ella Rumpf

is a Swiss actress known for her intense and transformative screen presence. She broke through internationally with her role in "Raw" (2016), earning acclaim for her fearless performance. Her versatility spans arthouse and genre films, with recent roles in "Couture" (2024) a drama set in the Paris fashion world. In 2022, she received the Swiss Film Award for Best Actress for "Soul of a Beast", marking a major recognition in her home country. Rumpf continues to be one of the most compelling talents in European cinema.

Iv Charbonneau-Ching

is Franco-Cambodian filmmaker based in Hong Kong, Iv Charbonneau-Ching develops an auteur-driven documentary cinema exploring memory, identity, and exile, weaving together intimate stories and the broader currents of History. He is notably the director of "Cambodia After Farewell" — an intimate journey into his family’s and his country’s intertwined histories — and "Siamese Dreams" a free-form and choreographic immersion into Thai society, caught in the turmoil of a military coup. In 2025, Iv Charbonneau-Ching deepens his reflection on Cambodian memory with a series of intimate conversations with witnesses to the fall of Phnom Penh in 1975.

A program of 13 short films by Alice Guy shot between 1898 and 1907. She is the first fiction filmmaker in the history of cinema. It was she who suggested to Léon Gaumont that he abandons simple animated views to shoot small scripted stories. Authorisation is given to her to direct and this is an exceptional fact in a profession reserved for men. Until 1907, she would reign over the production of Gaumont as director, artistic director and screenwriter, experimenting with faking and special effects.

After years of silence, we return to the land of their youth, tracing the footsteps of our missing parents and a fragmented memory. It is time to confront the terrifying reality of what our family endured under the Khmer Rouge regime: exile, forced labor, torture, and death. An unbearable reality that at the time was cloaked in ideals of independence and social justice.

More than a return to an illusion, we seek to understand, through this journey, why our parents died, in hopes of rediscovering a memory and perhaps a family.
