One of the largest and most significant urban regeneration projects ever undertaken in the UK, the creation of London’s Olympic Park was followed by a unique legacy of new communities, improved public transport and a major 110-hectare urban park.

PARK LEGACY COMPANY

London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

London, United Kingdom

AECOM led a multi-disciplinary team including HOK Sport (now Populous), Foreign Office Architects, and Allies and Morrison to deliver a regeneration framework for the Lower Lea Valley in support of London’s bid to host the Olympic Games. Key to the scheme is the sustainable legacy for the area.

Transforming the near-derelict and post-industrial site, threaded with the River Lea and a system of canals, the master plan takes its inspiration from the riverine landscape. Preparation for the plans built on existing aspirations within the local boroughs and involved extensive public consultation. Their success is rooted in the close integration of multiple social, environmental, transport, planning and design issues into a clear and simple strategy.

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was a world-class spectacular with amazing stadiums and exemplary visitor and athlete facilities in a beautiful contemporary-style setting. Following the Games, plans for the legacy

Establishing the candidacy and winning the Games for London

Stage 02

Designing the Olympic Park

Stage 03

Stage 04

included the development of 9100 new homes, thousands of permanent jobs and a park along the River Lea, linking Hackney Marshes in the north with the River Thames in the south. A number of Olympic venues, including the Olympic Stadium, VeloPark and Aquatics Center were retained as assets for the local community and beyond.

Master planning

Cost and project management

AECOM’s role on the London 2012 Olympics was to support the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and CLM consortium — comprising of CH2M Hill, Laing O’Rourke and Mace — as their strategic delivery partner responsible for independent cost planning during the feasibility stage of the project, cost management, risk and value management, purchase (procurement) and supplier engineering. The ODA needed a team to procure the infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games safely against fixed deadlines and to drive an improvement in wider policy areas.

The principle aim of the project was to procure all elements of £9.3 billion budget of works and services for the ODA in accordance with EU Procurement Directives. The 2012 deadline meant that the bulk of procurement had to be complete within 18 months to allow construction to be completed by July 2011, allowing a year for test events to confirm the venues and infrastructure perform as required.

The ODA created an integrated procurement team with its external delivery partner and fully deployed eProcurement, allowing the

procurement of 130 major contracts in 18 months which all included wider policy terms. The policy ambitions included making sure the 2012 games were the most sustainable Games ever; driving economic regeneration by stimulating local employment and the inclusion of SME and minority owned business in the ODA’s supply chain; achieving an excellent health and safety record; maintaining a very secure Games; and most importantly leaving a lasting physical, social and economic legacy.

Legacy master plan framework

Leading the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the master plan for London 2012, AECOM was also appointed as town planning advisor securing the initial planning application for the park in 2004. This included design and master plan development, value engineering, technical studies, programming and resource monitoring/management, public consultation and management. With the establishment of the ODA and as planning advisor we refined the master plan and infrastructure for full planning consent in 2007 — in the run up to the Games

we helped and guided 300 planning conditions on the site.

Our role also extended to preparing the Lower Lea Valley Regeneration Strategy, in collaboration with a number of stakeholders including Olympic bodies and local councils, establishing the broad principles for area-wide regenerative change and set out the Mayor of London’s policy framework. We also contributed to the design of the Legacy Communities Scheme (LLCS) working for the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC)

on a multi-consultant consortium. The LLCS established the long-term urban regeneration ambitions for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park — evidence of which we see today as the site continues to transform itself into a vibrant new mixed-use community.

Residential, commercial and education development of the site continues, complementing the retained Olympic venues which together enable a year-long program of community and international events.

LOS ANGELES 2028 (LA28) BID COMMITTEE

LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games Master Plan

Los Angeles, California

AECOM was an integral part of the LA28 bid team that developed the concept to create a transformative Games, utilizing Los Angeles’ ideal climate, its unparalleled number of existing world class venues, the unique culture of creativity and innovation, and its youthful energy. The successful bid returns the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the city after 44 years, and will strengthen the Games’ hosting process through a sustainable plan that maximizes existing venues.

AECOM served as the primary Technical and Design lead for the Bid Committee, managing and coordinating input from key stakeholders including the International Olympic Committee and international sport federations, as well as partners, such as existing venue owners and public entities.

The AECOM scope of service for the bid include design, cost estimation, transport planning and sustainability consulting services.

AECOM provided extensive facilities assessment services to evaluate all sports related venues across the city before making final recommendations for inclusion in the Games Concept plan.

The Games Concept is designed to be sustainable and fiscally responsible, maximizing existing venues, supporting them with temporary venues and offering a no-surprises, low-risk bid.

This will be the first privately financed Games since 1984, also in Los Angeles.

The Games Concept consists of four exciting venue clusters called Sports Parks. Each cluster is uniquely positioned to connect the excitement of the Games throughout the city, to take advantage of LA’s expanding public transit system and robust highway system, to provide iconic broadcast backdrops and giving multiple communities the experience of an Olympic Park.

The Games Concept Plan makes use of and is consistent with the existing longterm plans the City has put in place, particularly with its goals for expanded public transit and sustainability targets. AECOM has been involved and provided various design and building services on for numerous projects in relation to these initiatives.

The LA28 Games Concept was developed to fully utilize the massive ongoing investment in transportation by the region and will not require the construction of any additional transportation infrastructure beyond what is already planned for the region. AECOM’s in-house transportation team leveraged their knowledge of the transportation planning and larger program development slated for Southern California to develop a transportation plan that will effectively serve the Games.

EOM (OLYMPIC DELIVERY AUTHORITY)

Rio 2016 Olympic Park and Venues

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

AECOM and Rio’s vision for the future was not just to create a global stage for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2016, but also to create a successful legacy in a regenerated district, with new homes, jobs and places for leisure activities. It is also set to become a global center of sporting excellence, with world-class, highly versatile multi-purpose arenas.

AECOM designed the master plan for the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games. Following on from the master plan appointment, AECOM was also commissioned to design a range of major new venues on the park. We were able to learn lessons from our London 2012 work and consequently the park and venues were successfully delivered against the tightest of timescales and budgets.

AECOM’s master plan for the project focused on approximately 300 acres of land in the district of Barra de Tijuca, southwest of Rio. It included three phases: the Rio Olympic Park area during the 2016 Games, a transition plan and the final position showcasing the site in legacy mode after 2016.

The plan’s first phase included master planning, architecture and engineering design for the provision for 15 Olympic sports competitions and 11 Paralympic contests. The venues featured a combination of permanent and temporary elements to provide world-class sports facilities with in-built flexibility to achieve their Legacy requirements when the site is redeveloped after the Games.

The Cariocas Halls 1, 2 and 3 comprise the largest venue in the Rio 2016 Olympic Park at 400m long. The venue consists of three interconnected arenas that hosted the Olympic Basketball, Judo, Taekwondo and Wrestling and the Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Judo, Boccia and Volleyball. The three halls have capacities of 16,000, 10,000 and 10,000 respectively. The design defines new standards for an Olympic venue and supporting overlay, and secures a lasting Legacy by being transformed into the Elite Olympic Athlete Training Center, a unique training facility for the Brazil Olympic Committee. The halls use a combination of permanent, demountable and retractable seating configurations to optimize the spectator experience during the Games, and also to provide an efficient and economical transformation into Legacy mode.

Design

Our venues are known for exciting premium options for guests at all levels, integrated technology with built-in future flexibility, sustainable design that achieves LEED Platinum and Net Zero requirements, and strategies to revitalize surrounding neighborhoods and spur economic prosperity.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS

Prudential Center*

Newark, New Jersey

Master Plan

In 2023, Dan Meis and his team were commissioned to develop a master plan for a multiphase renovation of the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. To honor its history while paving the way for the future, the team began by asking key questions: What qualities have defined the Prudential Center since its inception? How will this unique approach to sports and entertainment evolve in the 21st century? Engaging with those who know the venue best allowed the team to capture its essence and envision its direction. This research culminated in a guiding idea that encapsulates what makes Prudential Center truly unique. The team’s vision, values and strategic priorities formed the basis for a new identity that better represents the community and enhances the communication about the venue.

The design for the Prudential Center delivers a cohesive experience that unifies and inspires the community. The design characteristics influence every aspect of the process, from furniture selection to finish palette. With the overarching vision established, the team focused on specific areas of the arena ripe for transformation and redesign, aimed at injecting new vibrancy and generating revenue daily. This includes everything from minor signage adjustments to large-scale developments of new VIP experiences and dining options. The overall plan encompasses upgrades to concessions, suites, concourses, signage and more.

Pier Club

The Pier Club at Prudential Center exemplifies the innovative transformation of premium seating, reimagined to deliver an immersive and allencompassing experience. A key feature is the conversion of 16 suites into versatile seating options, including loge boxes (or “microboxes”), premium club seating, ledge seating and custom banquette seating, all strategically designed using a central super-riser. By converting suites into innovative seating concepts, the Pier Club serves as a blueprint for arenas seeking to optimize premium offerings.

Crypto.com Arena Refresh

Los Angeles, California

Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center), home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings and one of the most utilized venues in the world, recently completed a comprehensive renovation series in fall 2024. Phased over multiple off-seasons, the upgrades began with the Chairman’s Club at the event level, a family room and suite-level concourse renovations, all completed in 2022. Subsequent enhancements included upper concourse updates and new terrace suites as a new hospitality offer carved into the existing seating bowl at the main concourse, completed in 2023. The latest improvements feature main concourse renovations and a new tunnel club, implemented in 2024.

Dan Meis’ original design for Staples Center and the master plan for LA Live changed the arena planning game by creating the first entertainment district centered around an arena. LA Live has become a global model for urban regeneration, transforming Downtown Los Angeles into a yearround destination that supports local businesses and drives investment while celebrating Southern California’s unique character.

The synergy of Crypto.com Arena and LA Live continues to set industry standards in revenue generation and fan experience. Hosting more than 250 events annually, Crypto.com Arena remains one of the most iconic and utilized sports and entertainment venues worldwide. Design

SACRAMENTO KINGS

Golden 1 Center

Sacramento, California —

Designed to meet one simple goal from ownership — to become the most technically advanced venue of its type to date — the Golden 1 Center and practice facility redeveloped and framed the future of downtown through its iconic design and technology-driven operation. The arena is uniquely Sacramento in how it implements both indoor and outdoor spaces, enables public engagement through an event plaza and creates a home-court advantage through a unique seating bowl geometry. This is what AECOM has identified as Arena 3.0 — breaking the mold of arena design and creating the future of NBA venues as the catalyst for urban entertainment.

The complex is placed within an active and spectacular outdoor event plaza that enables a variety of outdoor programming during Kings games and non-Kings events. The main entrance to the arena features large, operable glass panels that open the arena to the outdoors and the adjacent outdoor event plaza for a true indoor/outdoor experience.

The arena itself is progressive with 10,000 of the 17,000 seats in the lower bowl, closest to the game. The upper concourse opens to the giant doors at the plaza and a large slotted space at the back which allows unparalleled views from the public concourse. The project includes inviting concessions, featuring farm-to-fork food and state-of-the-art facilities for the athletes, as well as visitors, including suite and loge boxes and club spaces.

It’s set the new standard now for arenas, not just in this league, but around the world.”

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Lumen Field New Stadium and Modernization*

Seattle, Washington

Originally designed by AECOM and recently refreshed by Dan Meis and his team, Lumen Field remains a model for urban, mixed-use venues, blending sports, entertainment and community engagement into a vibrant live-work-play environment.

New stadium

When it opened, Lumen Field redefined NFL stadiums by seamlessly integrating into Seattle’s redeveloping urban neighborhood and maximizing revenue beyond game day. Designed with dual functionality for the NFL Seahawks and MLS Sounders, the stadium offers premier home-field experiences for both leagues. Its efficient design, combined with the attached WAMU Theater/ Exhibition Center, supports a range of community and professional events.

Modernization*

Prior to joining AECOM, Dan Meis and his team designed several modernization projects to improve fan experience and revenue, including new club areas, concourse enhancements, new video board studies and improved fan amenities and circulation. One of these projects transformed an underutilized circulation space under the Hawk’s Nest grandstand into two active and animated bars.

Master Planning + Venue Experience Upgrades*

Various Locations

Brand-wide master planning

In 2018, Dan Meis was asked by Live Nation to develop facilities master plans for 40 amphitheaters across the US. The work identified the existing conditions of each venue and studied potential improvements to enhance operations, revenues and fan experience. The studies focused on improving site circulation, “gateways,” wayfinding, adjacencies and specific improvements to seating options, VIP amenities, food and beverage, retail and even typically overlooked elements like toilets. These master plans have allowed Live Nation to develop a consistent, brand forward approach across venues, and implement improvements in several phases within the next few seasons.

Venue experience upgrades

Subsequently, Dan and his team worked with Live Nation to develop the design scope of venue upgrades across a portfolio of outdoor amphitheaters, including coordination of cost estimation for capital expenditure planning. From master planning to individual lounge spaces, this team established a unique vision for each venue to connect fans to the event and drive increased revenue. Research of each venue is mined to create an elevated music experience that reinforces the Live Nation brand as the future of entertainment.
