The Guardian Angels VISION and MISSION is a very important document because it describes the hopes and dreams for our school community and expresses who we are, what we do and how we do it... in fact we could call our vision and mission THE GA WAY!

Welcome to the 2023 Guardian Angels Catholic School Community Connect Business Directory!

This is our 4th edition of this project as we support our family and friend businesses. GA prides itself on a strong bond and connection between staff, students and parents and this publication aims to foster this bond even more. The businesses advertising in the directory are either families in the school or have a strong connection to Guardian Angels. Our hope is that all families can confidently use these businesses in the knowledge that they will be looked after.

Guardian Angels Catholic Primary School provides a safe, engaging, and empowering environment where students are valued. We encourage each individual to succeed in becoming life-long learners- striving to reach their potential. There are many choices and opportunities given to the students from academic, cultural, social, physical, and spiritual aspects of education. We feel privileged to support and nurture each child in our care, working alongside parents to watch each individual progress and grow. We are looking forward to sharing and celebrating many memorable moments in 2023.

This year we are implementing our new GA Community Connect structure. We have ‘Class Angel’ representatives which provide a connection with parent voice and leadership. We also have implemented “Just One Thing” where groups of parent support have been formed to help liaise and plan key community events- we do say it is many hands that make light work! Please refer to key events in the date claimers which provide great events to connect and celebrate as a community.

Thanks to everyone who has been part of this directory, as parents and friends of GA, you play an integral role in building the nurturing, caring and family focused environment we operate within. QOA & Mercy Symbols

At Guardian Angels we are continuously reminded of our Mercy Tradition and the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, CATHERINE MCAULEY through important Mercy Symbols that we see around our school.

The Mercy Cross is symbolic of the spirit of service. Catherine McAuley designed the original Mercy Cross herself – a dark background with a white cross in the middle. You can see that the figure of Jesus is not present on the Cross. This is because Catherine believed that each Sister of Mercy places herself on the Cross to be like Jesus.

The Heart of Mercy is symbolic of the spirit of compassion. Catherine McAuley followed the way of Jesus by responding to God’s call to be kind and generous to

those in the world who were less fortunate or in need of support and comfort.

The Cup of Mercy is symbolic of the spirit of welcome. Catherine McAuley believed that welcoming people who needed help and offering them something to eat or drink was a way to share God’s love.

The Boots of Mercy are symbolic of the spirit of justice. The Sisters of Mercy have always been known as the ‘walking nuns’. They were the first nuns to leave their convent and go out into the community to

help people in need. They did not judge and treated everyone with dignity and respect.

Our new Qualities of Angels have been inspired by the work of Catherine McAuley and her Sisters of Mercy. There are now only six Qualities of Angels and these ask us to be people of mercy who reflect the light of Jesus and the love of God. Meet the Leadership Team

In my role as Assistant Principal, I endeavour to provide effective leadership in support of the Principal within the school community to ensure that students receive quality education in accordance with Catholic faith and Christian principles. I work towards achieving this by collaboration in planning, directing and regularly evaluating curriculum development, teaching programs, and co-curricular activities and by reviewing the efficacy of processes to support the core Religious and Educative dimensions. As part of my role, I ensure that people, finances, and resources are effectively led and managed in alignment with legislative requirements and Archdiocesan and BCE policy and procedures while modelling and fostering a commitment to the safeguarding of children and promote a culture where student protection is the responsibility of everyone.

As Assistant Principal Religious Education, I endeavour to bring the religious aspect of the school to life. I assist with organising opportunities throughout the year for staff, students and parents/carers to participate in worship and prayer and I promote and foster the Gospel values of the Catholic Christian faith, particularly the Mercy values to which our community aspires. I also support teachers to plan for and implement the religion curriculum, trying to ensure that the key messages of Jesus remain relevant to our students and community. Guardian Angels is part of the Southport Catholic Parish and our school community connects with this wider faith community through regular participation in masses and liturgies, through combined social events and through many of our students taking part in the parish sacramental program to prepare for the reception of Confirmation, First Holy Communion and Reconciliation.

At Guardian Angels we work in partnership across our community. As a learning and teaching institution, we ensure a strong partnership exists between our Learning and Teaching Team and the Diversity Team. Together we work with teachers, families and students to provide differentiated learning opportunities which cater for the diverse needs of our learners. We monitor each student’s learning journey for engagement, progress and achievement. Our Diversity Team consists of a Diversity Teacher and Diversity School Officer across a targeted yearlevel group. Our Diversity Teachers are Selina Cameron, Lauren Wapling and Lauren Costello. Our Diversity team also includes our Guidance Councillor, Cilla Stent and School Based Speech Pathologist, Lea Isles.

Special Friends at GA

Each year we have a special friend who helps us to fundraise for various charities. This year Kanyini Cow is supporting Guardian Angels in this endeavour. She was named by the GA students who selected Kanyini because it is an indigenous word that means nurturing, protecting and caring for other people and the environment, which is exactly the actions that Jesus, Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy demonstrated. As members of a faith community, we are asked to do the same.

Innovation & Invention at GA

In 2023, Guardian Angels launched their first Inventors Academy. It is an opportunity for students in years three and 4 to learn about and demonstrate critical and creative thinking. Foundational to what it means to be a GA Learner, these opportunities provide students with problems to solve that push them beyond the everyday in engaging and challenging way. Through an application process, students were selected to participate and commit to attending weekly academy lessons before and during school time.

Our first Inventor Academy group meets each Thursday morning as they design, create, challenge, and think creatively. Over the year, we look forward to sharing some of their creations with you. There will also be an inventor's play space in the library so that all the students can have the opportunity to tinker and develop skills in this area. As an exciting new opportunity, we are celebrating the potential for all students to serve and have a real impact on their world. Our GA Inventors Academy was just one way we strive for success.

Stay Connected at GA

Communication between school and home is certainly an important factor in the day-to-day functioning of schools and homes. Knowing what is happening when and why helps households plan the week for uniforms or sporting days for example and teachers appreciate being advised of anything that may affect their student’s ability to learn. Our school is like a small town and there is always lots of things happening each week so your teacher will send a weekly email to their class parents giving an overview of the week ahead and reminders if required. Guardian Angels provides a newsletter each Tuesday which is emailed out to the number one contact on our system, this email really helps with keeping up to date with school events and general information from around the school.

There are many specialised curriculum areas in which students are involved. Students are taught by teachers with speciality in these areas as they explore key concepts and skills within the curriculum subjects.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop is a service provided by the school for the benefit of the school community. It stocks the entire school uniform, with the exception of school shoes. It is run by the school, with the profits from the sale of uniforms going to assist the running of the school.

Tuckshop and process

The Tuckshop

is a service provided by the school for the benefit of the school community. Only Flexischools ONLINE orders are accepted, children cannot order using a bag and cash. Orders will not be accepted after 8.40am. The school employs a Canteen Manager Mrs Rachel Nowlan, but your help is always requested to allow us to maintain a daily canteen service. Our menu has been developed with the Queensland Government Healthy Choices Strategy as our guide.

Ingredients

Cake

1 ½ CUPS GRATED CARROT

1 CUP SR FLOUR

¾ CUP OLIVE OIL

1 TSP VANILLA

1 ½ TSP BAKING POWDER

¾ CUP CASTER SUGAR

½ CUP SULTANAS

2 EGGS

½ TSP CINNAMON

Icing

2 TBSP CREAM CHEESE

½ TSP VANILLA

2 TSP BUTTER, SOFTENED

¾ CUP ICING SUGAR

Directions

Mix oil, sugar and vanilla in bowl until combined. Add eggs and beat until light and creamy.

Stir in carrot and sultanas.

Sift flour, baking powder and cinnamon into bowl and mix well.

Pour mixture into lightly greased/lined 21cm loaf tin.

Bake in oven 180 deg for 50/55 mins.

Mix cream cheese, butter, vanilla and icing sugar together in bowl until creamy. Spread on cake when cool.

Best enjoyed by hungry kids after school!
