There was a time when there weren’t many dining options at Lakeridge. Even 10 years ago, Lake Highlands neighbors had just a handful of restaurants to choose from — a cafe, a Dairy Queen, a pizza place. Cheryl Calvin, the owner of The Store and a lifelong Lake Highlands neighbor, only decided to move her shop into Lakeridge because the new owner had renovated it. That was in 2019, and since then, many restaurants have opened. “We can actually eat in our backyard,” she says. “I see people walking to this shopping center all the time.” Lakeridge used to be larger than it is now. At one point, it housed a Walmart, west of Audelia. SHADY’S BURGERS & BREWHAHA opened in 2016. Part of the restaurant is in the place of a barber shop, and the dining room now sits where a gift shop once was housed. Next door is LAKE HIGHLANDS DONUTS. It opened in 2009, making it one of the oldest restaurants in Lakeridge still in business. CEDAR & VINE is also nearby and opened just after SHADY’S in 2017. Before then, the space was occupied by several other dining spots. Most recently, in 2014, it was NEIGHBORS CASUAL KITCHEN. HIGHLANDS CAFÉ came before it in 2004. And LAKE HIGHLANDS BAKERY AND COFFEE BAR opened in 1997. RM 12:20 debuted in 2018. In 2008, a seafood restaurant called OFFSHORES NEXT DOOR occupied the space. Offshores was the first restaurant to be located there, since gardening stores came before it. The earliest

records available show a building repair and maintenance shop occupying the space. The group that opened Cedar & Vine is opening another concept in Lakeridge. It’s called HEI HEI AMERICAN CHINESE, and the space has housed many dining options over the years. ATOMIC PIE opened in 2011, and SUDAN RESTAURANT opened in 2007. CHICKEN FRENZY was the first restaurant to take that spot in 2001, right after KIDS CARE CENTER closed. SOCO COFFEE HOUSE AND BISTRO opened in Lakeridge in 2019. Records show the space was a STATE FARM insurance office until at least 2003. In 2012, another tenant began using the space as a MY OFFICE store. RESIDENT TAQUERIA first opened in 2015 and is going strong. The shopping center has also been home to several chain restaurants over the years. The oldest still standing is WENDY’S, which opened in 2005. SUBWAY, DOMINO’S and TACO BELL all came in 2012. ANDY’S FROZEN CUSTARD has been in business since 2017. When TACO JOINT opened in 2019, it added another restaurant to Lakeridge. It took the place of URBAN THRIFT VECTOR BREWING began serving homemade pizza and beer in 2019, the first dining option to open in the space. Before the brewery and its 2,300 square-foot patio, there was a CROSSFIT gym, which started in 2011. . GREAT AMERICAN COOKIES and MARBLE SLAB CREAMERY opened in 2020.

A rack of boneless ribs crafted from wheat protein and mushrooms can be charred to perfection on the grill at any summer barbecue.

CRYSTAL GOMEZ started experimenting with fake outs a few years ago, after becoming vegan in 2017. “My husband started out vegan with me and fell off the wagon because he felt like he was missing something from his diet,” she says. “So he started eating meat again on the weekends.” In an effort to lure him back to fulltime plant-based life, she set out to make a better meat. Gomez knew of vegan meat purveyors such as the Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis. She started with recipes she found on the internet and then started toying around with textures and flavors. She’s the vice president of revenue cycle for a health care company, and with extra time at home last year, she hammered out perfected recipes. The products were such a hit with friends and family that she turned them into a business. The Boneless Butcher sells vegan steak, ribs and jalapeño cheddar brats.

They’re made mostly from seitan, which is wheat gluten, mixed with mushrooms and onions. The Boneless Butcher rents a production facility in Garland, and its products cost $11-$18 on its website and every weekend at the Dallas Farmers Market, where samples are available. These vegan meats can also be found on gtfoitsvegan.com, at Mashup Market in Denton and at a snow cone trailer in Desoto called Snow on the Rocks, plus occasional pop-ups around town. Gomez lives in Lochwood with her husband, a physical therapist, and their kids, ages 15, 13 and 8. She started The Boneless Butcher on the side, and she hasn’t quit her job yet, but she’s hoping to make it a full time business, with growth into a wholesale business and possibly a restaurant or storefront. “Come see us at the farmers market and get a sample,” she says. “I love seeing non vegans come and try stuff out of curiosity. I love exposing people who aren’t already exposed to this lifestyle to that.”

A COU P L E O F Y E A RS AG O, neighborhood resident Sam Howard and a bunch of restaurant buddies were sitting around a swimming pool, and the discussion led to a concept for Cedar & Vines. “We said, ‘I’m sure it would be cool to put something like that in our neighborhood,’ because we felt like we would love to go eat at a place like this,” says Howard, co-owner of Cedar & Vine.

“And that didn’t exist. And so we thought, ‘Well, now’s as good a time as any — why don’t we see if we can’t build that?’ ” Throughout Lake Highlands, this sentiment is being echoed by more and more restaurateurs, who are making our neighborhood an emerging dining scene. Shocked to hear the terms “dining scene” and “Lake Highlands” used in the same sentence? If so, you’ve

benefit for the two shopping centers along Audelia Road. Bradley regularly sees her staff and neighbors crossing the street to pick up a different style of taco or dessert after dinner. “There’s no doubt that the two shopping centers fuel each other,” Bradley says. And that local foot traffic helps make retail and other shops successful, McGough says. The same is true at the Town Center, where salons and other businesses popped up in conjunction with restaurants. A ripple effect also hasbeen visible in areas such as Creekside, where Alamo Drafthouse, Fireside Pies, Sugarfire Smoke House and Monkey King Noodle Company have settled in the past few years. “Our real estate broker Tey Tiner, who’s a Lake Highlands resident, pointed the space out to us,” says Andrew Chen, who owns Monkey King. “Initially, we were hesitant to take on a new project

in the middle of Covid as we were trying to keep operations as tight as possible. “Tey asked us what we needed to make the deal work, and within 48 hours he had gathered a handful of investors, all Lake Highlands residents, who were excited to have a Monkey King in the neighborhood.” Lake Highlands has the space to keep bringing in more dining spots, McGough says. But their success will require that neighbors continue spending their money near home. Anticipating further success, SoCo is already planning to expand in its current space. Meanwhile, an American-Chinese concept called Hei Hei — by the creators of Cedar & Vine — is expected to open in a few months two doors down from SoCo. “The risk is worth bringing more options to the neighborhood,” says Bradley. “In the end, I think the neighborhood will prove that you should be here, and they support their own.”

sweets Carrie DeCicco never baked much before starting Salt Sweets in 2018. But she wanted to help when neighbor Erin Willis asked her to make cookies for the opening celebration of her restaurant, RM 12:20. The cookies were a hit, and a few weeks later, Willis asked her to make cinnamon rolls. “Give me a cake recipe, and I will totally murder it, but those two things I’m really good at,” DeCicco says. “It blew up from there.” Her next gig was at Resident Taqueria, then at Vector Brewing and Shady’s Burgers & Brewhaha. Although the restaurants paused partnerships with her during the pandemic, her business never slowed down. She was overwhelmed with delivery orders. “People were eating their feelings. I try not to eat my stuff, but I do,” DeCicco says. “I was at Shady’s, and I had a threepack of rolls that had been there for a while. I wondered how they tasted, and they tasted great. That was dinner. You’d think I’d get sick of them, but I don’t because they’re so good.” The cinnamon rolls are her best-seller, but her cookies come in a variety of flavors for every palate. There’s the classic chocolate chip cookie, which can be elevated with toffee, caramel, bacon and peppermint. Everything is baked with a sprinkle of salt to accentuate the sweetness of the cookies. She also sells oatmeal cream pies and dough to go. Most of her business is local, and DeCicco credits her success to the Lake Highlands community, especially the women on the LH Mamas Facebook page. DeCicco bakes out of her home, but she also rents space at a commercial kitchen. She has two employees to help keep up with orders. She has no plans to open a storefront, but she’s not counting it out in the future. “I never thought I would own my own business,” she says. “I wanted to be a mom, and I got that wish. Now it’s time to do what I want to do. Everything has been easy. It was meant to be.” Salt Sweets, 469-274-6164, saltsweets.com

color my coo Nancy and Sam Major started Color My Cookie last spring to earn revenue when their storefront, Tart Bakery, was forced to close at the onset of the pandemic. They envisioned the cookie decorating kit becoming a product of Tart, but operating the storefront soon became impractical. “Our retail tanked,” Nancy Major says. “It wasn’t just that people didn’t have birthday parties or weddings, they didn’t have bridge club. They just weren’t going over to a friend’s house.” The couple started delivering cookie decorating boxes from the

back of their cars. People bought them, then bought them again. By the end of last year, Color My Cookie had shipped to all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Original-size kits include six cookies to decorate, icing, sprinkles, edible water colors, paint brushes and extra decor. Each box comes with a link to an online tutorial where a pastry chef provides decorating tips and tricks. Color My Cookie has themed kits for every occasion, including birthdays, graduations, holidays and new homes. It also caters to specific

interests, such as dinosaurs, tractors and mermaids. The cookies are shortbread, so they’re a little more crumbly and a little less sweet than sugar cookies. They are pre-iced to preserve freshness and provide a blank canvas for customers’ creativity. “It helps people feel like they’re pro decorators, but we’ve gone to great lengths that when you get done decorating the cookie, it’s not just cute,” Major says. “So many people buy a decorated cookie and don’t even expect it to be good. Ours are simple and delicious.”

n the road to a silver-haired crown, many of us — or our loved ones — will need help. The good news is that there are plenty of nearby neighborhood resources to help ease into that transition. Here are a few tips. START EARLY. “Until we need to know something about senior living, most of us know nothing,” says Tammy Oliver, community relations with Juliette Fowler Communities. “Pre-plan golden years and retain control over your future. Start early, learn what your community offers and what it doesn’t, then designate personal intentions. If you or a loved one go to just one place and later need morecare, then you have to start over. Find a multi-care-level place; make friends where everyone knows and loves you.” FORGIVE YOURSELF. “There’s often enormous guilt felt by family members when deciding to even consider moving a loved one into memory care,” says Ali Congrove, community relations manager with Brookdale White Rock. Statistically, it’s not uncommon for caregivers to pass away from stress-related disorders before the one with dementia. “Find a community that supports family as much as the resident, a neighborhood location where family can pop in and see their family member feeling a sense of stability and comfort.” TACKLE TRANSPORTATION. Everyone’s on the go, but for seniors getting around can be tricky. Choosing to limit or stop driving is difficult, especially for seniors living without easy access to resources such as doctors or groceries. “Transportation accessibility is vital because it decreases isolation and increases the physical connections for new opportunities,” says Jonathon Braddick, community development manager for the AARP Ride@50+ Program in Dallas “Older adults and their families want to look for a safe and reputable alternative ride services resource for affordable local transportation,” Braddick says. NAVIGATE AGING. Vulnerable seniors can be targets of fraud and scams. It’s important for neighbors to advocate and protect the rights of older adults,” says Stacey Malcolmson, president and CEO of The Senior Source. Extra time on your hands? “Look in on a senior neighbor, aid with technology, impact their emotional and financial well-being, and be a resource against social isolation,” she says. “Even caregivers can use help from the most active of us in giving the most vulnerable neighbors a purpose.”

According to the online Kev’s Best, the church I serve as pastor made the list of the top five churches in Dallas based on criteria such as business history, services, pictures/media, opening hours, social media, website quality, awards and accomplishment, reviews and feedback, among other things. The top five churches in the list have little in common in terms of denominational identity, theological commitments or missional engagement. They are an odd grouping with one common factor: size. I am always happy when people rank us highly in whatever way, but how do we evaluate religious communities? There are many fine churches and other religious congregations in Dallas. I hope our members and others in the community have a positive view of who we are and what we do. But we are human beings who disappoint one another more often than I like. For all the good reviews we might receive, there are people for whom our church does not measure up. I regret that deeply, but I also understand it. Many churches are smaller and equally faithful. They lack the resources we are blessed with that allow us to provide ministries others can’t afford. No church can meet the earthly needs of everyone, yet many churches may meet the standards of heaven notwithstanding. When thinking about the value of any congregation, there are factors that aren’t included in Kev’s Best that should be considered. Here are a few. First, is the congregation faithful to its primary spiritual identity? Whatever the denomination, fidelity to the church’s core theological commitments is crucial. The reason for its existence is usually rooted in covenantal affirmations about God and

what faith demands. If a church holds firmly to those things, it has reason to celebrate its life. Second, does the congregation maintain a witness in the world that is consistent with the teaching to love one’s neighbor as oneself ? Churches do not only exist for themselves; they are meant to be a salient influence on the communities where they are located. This may entail charitable work that relieves the plight of the poor and disenfranchised, or it also may include working for justice and the transformation of civic life for the sake of the common good. Finally, and more challenging, does the church show evidence that it changes over time in a way that maintains its vitality without forsaking its core identity? Willem de Kooning, the abstract expressionist artist once said: “I have to change to stay the same.” If a church looks and behaves in ways more reflective of the 1950s that the 2020s, it’s hardly relevant. Holding to the ancient faith faithfully today is the goal. Dallas is blessed to have many fine Christian churches and other religious congregations that are doing good and faithful work.
