We can’t stop talking about… DALLAS FIRST RESPONDERS beginning to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. At the end of 2020, Dallas Fire-Rescue, the Dallas Police Department and Dallas City Marshals started to receive COVID-19 vaccines. According to a Dec. 29 press release, the Texas Department of State Health Services allocated 2,000 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for Dallas’ first responders. The city planned to inoculate 250 first responders per day in a drive-thru at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center.

Neighborhood Spotlight Mary Kubin thought nothing of it when she and her daughter-in-law, Susan, went to the State Farm office in Lake Highlands to pick up a new 2021 calendar. She had been a customer for 32 years — this was a routine trip. But, when they arrived, Susan had planned a surprise party for Mary’s 100th birthday, decked out with balloons and cake. “Lord have mercy,” Mary said. “I never thought anyone would do anything like this for me.” Mary has lived in the same house on Madera Street since 1942 and gets along just fine by herself. Mary’s secret to staying young has been doing something active every day, and her doctors agree that it has worked. “Two days ago, she had a really intense physical, and they said she’s 20 years younger than her chronological age,” said Mary’s son, John Kubin. “She’ll live to be 120.” Search “Kubin” at lakehighlands.advocatemag.com to read more.

EDUCATION UPDATES n Lake Highlands resident and

current vice president of the RISD school board Jean Bono announced that she will not run for her position again in May. After six years as a trustee, Bono tweeted on Jan. 7 that she will not seek re-election and that she is “leaving the district in excellent shape with strong leadership on the RISD team.” Steve Mitchell, a Richardson city council member and former mayor, plans to run for her spot. n To promote, enhance and

celebrate diversity and inclusion, the City of Richardson is hosting two contests open to RISD students. Partnering with RISD, Plano ISD and UT Dallas, the Richardson City Council is sponsoring a Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest and a Black History Month art contest. GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY Returning RISD teachers and staff received another retention stipend this year. The district board of trustees approved the stipends on Dec. 14 in the amount of $750 for full-time employees and $375 for part-time employees who have been with RISD since the 2020-21 school year began and returned in January. This bonus follows a similar stipend that was granted to returning RISD employees at the start of the 2020-21 school year.

“GOOD MORNING, SE A H AW K S ” Meet the man behind the bullhorn at White Rock Elementary morning drop-off

nyone at White Rock Elementary on a school day between 7:30-8:00 a.m. will more than likely hear Billy Dorsey before he is seen. The WRE dad of three is one of seven “traffic dads” from the school’s Dads Club that helps direct cars during morning drop off. Parents likely recognize Dorsey as the man holding a bullhorn welcoming students and families with an encouraging “Good morning, Seahawks!” “My role is the dad with the bullhorn that gets everybody fired up in the mornings,” Dorsey says. “No matter if they’re coming in a tiny bit late.” The bullhorn also helps Dorsey gently call out drivers who are

using their phones while dropping off. “It’s good accountability without being too harsh,” he says. During holidays like Christmas and Halloween, the traffic dads get families excited by dressing up for the season. This past December, Dorsey wore a Santa Claus hat while announcing a countdown until the holiday break. Dorsey’s connection to WRE dates back to 1996 when he moved to Lake Highlands. His former wife was a teacher there, and he started volunteering in 2005 when his oldest daughter attended. Shortly after Dorsey began helping out is when he started as a traffic dad — the only one at the time, he says. WRE is a big walk-to-school campus, and his goal as a traffic dad is to give

parents as much time with their kids as possible. “Whatever makes morning go better for mom and dad and White Rock Elementary students, that’s really what my passion was and is,” he says. Dorsey’s youngest child graduated from WRE last school year. He says most traffic dads step away from the Dads Club when all their children phase out of the school, but return if needed. But since the 2019-20 school year was cut short, Dorsey returned this year to see if WRE might need a few extra hands. Dorsey continues as a traffic dad going into this spring semester hoping to be a source of motivation and encouragement for WRE families.

“When you know you’re making a difference, with or without the accolades, it’s very rewarding to continue and help our community, our school, our school district and just be a good American,” he says. Dorsey starts his day between 4:30 and 4:45 a.m. He works out, then heads straight to WRE. When students are all dropped off a little after 8 a.m., he spends the rest of his day as a roofing contractor at Dorsey Construction Company, which has been repairing roofs in DFW and Lake Highlands since 1996. Dads Club members Travis Durham, Dan Jackson, David Day, John Rudebeck, Whit Fairbanks and Tim Clark are a few of several that continue volunteering alongside Dorsey despite having children already graduated from WRE, he says. Other club duties these dads take on include helping out with school events, sports and the Indian Princess Program, which fosters understanding and companionship between fathers and daughters. “It’s just really indicative of the volunteerism and the servant’s heart that we all seem to have for our children and sometimes just for the greater cause,” Dorsey says.

ai Takase is no stranger to Japanese cuisine after growing up in Japan, attending culinary school in Seattle and dedicating 20 years to the food industry. These experiences led her to bring some of the country’s most delicious foods to Dallas with the opening of Sushi de Handroll two years ago. The restaurant specializes in temaki, or sushi handrolls, and izakaya bites, which are small and shareable bites.

Sushi de Handroll’s seaweed is imported from Japan and customized just for them. This crispy seaweed is a signature item for many of the restaurant’s offerings, Takase says. “No other restaurant can have it,” she says. While the sushi handrolls are the restaurant’s main event, another popular dish includes the crispy rice izakaya, which comes with either spicy tuna, California or salmon avocado over deep fried sushi rice with seasoning powder.

The Mosaic Sushi is the most eye-catching menu item. It comes with a range of 16 to 48 bite-sized pressed sushis with eight different flavors and toppings. Pops of green come from cucumber and avocado, red comes from the tuna and orange from the salmon. It’s also a personal favorite of Takase’s. “Visually, it’s pretty unique,” she says. “No one has it in the DFW area.” Customers that are not big fans of raw offerings can still dine on fish items and cooked options like shrimp tempura or Japanese barbecue. Sushi de Handroll came to be when Takase moved to Dallas four years ago after living in Los Angeles, where she worked at a different Japanese restaurant. Takase also gained 10 years of cooking experience by whipping up dishes in American, Japanese and Italian cuisines. When looking at where Sushi de Handroll should go, she thought The Hill Shopping Center here was prime real estate. “The city was expanding and growing so much,” Takase says. “And I was like, yeah, this is it. This is the place.”

New apartments being built at the time and nearby Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital made the potential for customer traffic even better, she says. The restaurant’s customer base has slightly shifted since the pandemic started. More families would dine at Sushi de Handroll pre-COVID, and now they mostly come on the weekends, Takase says. Weekdays are mostly frequented by young professionals from nearby office buildings. Like many restaurants, the pandemic was “very tough” on Sushi de Handroll, she says. There was a spike in takeout orders, which pushed her to pivot the restaurant’s togo options. Sushi de Handroll has since found success with to-go make-your-own handroll kits. The kits see high sales during the weekends and are popular with kids. Whether it’s temaki or Japanese barbecue, Sushi de Handroll customers can get a realistic taste of Japan without breaking the bank, Takase says. “We’re really authentic, providing Japanese food to people, but with a little bit more reasonable price,” she says. Putting down roots: Emilie and Chris It was 2006 when Emilie and Chris George first crossed paths at Freshman Center. They were officially together after Chris asked Emilie to their sophomore homecoming dance. During Chris’ soccer practices, he would catch Emilie running for track. “In the petty little 10 seconds that she was running by while the soccer team was practicing, I would be waving at her and doing high school flirting, if you will,” he says. After graduating from Lake Highlands High School in 2010, Chris headed to the University of Texas and Emilie the University of Arkansas — they were over 600 miles apart. “We broke up for about a year and then decided that sucked,” Emilie says. “And there weren’t any bigger fish out there in the sea,” Chris responded. Emilie and Chris were married in Downtown Dallas in 2015. The George’s bought a home in Lake Highlands two years ago. “We’ve come back, and we never plan on leaving,” Emilie says. They had their first child when the pandemic hit North Texas in March 2020. “We kept the newspaper article from the day he was born. It’s titled ‘Dallas shuts down,’” Emilie says. Lake Highlands has changed a lot since the couple graduated a decade ago. It is now a multifaceted neighborhood with shiny new restaurants and shopping centers. What remains is a sense of community and belonging. “It is kind of fun being adults, owning our home and raising children here when we were said children not that long ago,” Emilie says. “We know our son’s going to go to school with all of the children of our close friends.”

Words to live by: Susie and John John Roberts knew Susie was the woman for him over burgers and curly fries on one of their first dates at a “fancy” burger joint in the Medallion Shopping Center in the ’70s. For Susie, it was during her last two years at Texas A&M. She says John checked off all her boxes: loyalty, kindness, love of God, caring, funny and a hard worker. The LHHS ’74 grads married in 1978 and have two sons and a daughter. This verse from Ephesians guides the Roberts’ marriage, they say: “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other just as God in Christ forgave you.”

Building a legacy: Lori and David Lori first noticed David Findley in his 1967 Firebird Convertible. The LHHS sweethearts first started dating in the late ’70s and were married December 1979, and they had their daughter Amanda the next year. Lori and David look forward to retiring this year, and following their daughter to Florida’s Gulf Coast. David says the thought of living outside DFW for the first time since 1970 is nerve-wracking and sentimental, but the Findleys feel it is the right thing to do for family.

Growing up together: Letrieka and Kristopher Kristopher Evans would mess with Letrieka while sitting behind her in AP History at LHHS — classic flirting from high school boys. His strategy worked and caught Letrieka’s attention; the two attended the school Valentine’s Dance as sophomores in 1997. They spent the next three years of high school bonding at all LHHS dances, Jake’s Burgers and Beer and the local skating rink before heading off to college at the University of North Texas. The couple tied the knot in May 2009, had a daughter in 2011 and a son in 2015. The Evans say communication, honesty and being best friends have been key in their relationship.

Banded together: Lauren and Tony Tony LaRocca asked Lauren out while walking from LHHS to Freshman Center after morning band practice — a place of fond memories for the 2002 graduates. Their time together at LHHS was filled with Friday night football games, competitions and early morning practices. The LaRoccas were married in July 2005, and they now have 7-year-old Jude, and 5-year-old Penny. Laughing at each other’s lame jokes, forgiving each other’s flaws and learning from each other’s growth has sustained the couple over the last 21 years, Tony says.

One heart-shaped rock later: Amy and Matthew Everything changed for Amy and Matthew Frank senior year at LHHS. The year before, the two were great friends, worked together at Uncle Julio’s on Lower Greenville, sang in acapella together and carpooled. On Amy’s 18th birthday at the start of senior year, Matthew came to her house with a heart-shaped rock. The 2000 LHHS grads got married in 2010. With three children and working on the frontlines of COVID-19 — Matthew as a restaurant general manager and Amy as a nurse — the two make time for each other with a monthly date night.

Trust and communication: Elizabeth and Jeff Elizabeth and Jeff Ryan’s love story began at a TC Shaved Ice on Garland Road when the two attended Robert T. Hill Middle School in Old Lake Highlands. They were married in May 2008. Elizabeth says trust and communication are key factors in their marriage as they navigate parenting their daughter and three full-time jobs between them. Elizabeth works in dentistry, Jeff in computers, and the two create yard greetings for their small business, Yard Card Queen, in East Dallas. When not at work, the couple spends time at White Rock Stables with their horse, Bentley.

Family first: lecia and John Lecia Sauve knew John Williams was “the one” on their first date after a family dinner at his house. “He got up and cleaned his plate and went over and hugged and kissed his mom and said ‘Thank you,’’’ she says. “And I thought, ‘Oh my God, this guy is awesome.’” The LHHS ’73 graduates met in first grade, but did not start getting to know each other until their senior year. They bonded while working together at NorthPark. Lecia worked in sales and John worked as a janitor. “He would come by a lot to clean up my area,” Lecia says, emphasizing “a lot.” Lecia and John both lived on Estate Lane in high school. With his instrument attached to him, John would walk about a mile every day to her house to walk her to school. “It was a lot of walking, but I wanted to be with her,” he says. “I couldn’t believe that she would be seen with a band weenie carrying his band instrument.” But Lecia did not see him as a band weenie. She admired his musical talents. One of Lecia’s favorite memories at LHHS was watching John direct the stage band and perform at an assembly. “He played a Chicago solo on his trombone, and I

was just undone,” she says. The couple dated through college when she attended Texas Tech University and he went to the University of Texas. By the end of college, John knew he wanted to marry Lecia based on her captivating personality and strong faith. “She’s definitely the one,” he says. “I couldn’t see spending really any other time with anybody else.” Lecia and John tied the knot in 1977 and had three children. The Williams family lived in Virginia when the kids were elementaryaged, but came back to Lake Highlands when the oldest was 16. All children graduated from LHHS and were involved in musical theater, the Wranglers and choir. “It was just really idyllic, I think, being back in Lake Highlands,” Lecia says. “We had both had such great experiences growing up here.” John says it is not uncommon for them to venture out into the community and still see people he and Lecia knew growing up. “It feels like the town we grew up in,” John says. “It feels like home,” Lecia responded.

Started with a paper route: Rhonda and Joe Rhonda noticed Joe Clifford at 12 years old when he was a paperboy. But the ’84 and ’85 LHHS grads did not make it official until 1982. The couple recalls fond memories of cruising down Forest Lane, bonfires at the lake and spring break trips. Joe says he knew Rhonda was “the one” when he saw her dating someone else amid a brief breakup between them. Joe did everything he could to win Rhonda back. RISD 2021 BOND INSIDE THE PROPOSED $750 MILLION BOND THAT WOULD PHASE OUT LAKE HIGHLANDS’ JUNIOR HIGHS

A PROPOSED $750 MILLION bond in Richardson ISD includes plans to shift Lake Highlands’ junior highs to middle schools by the 2024-25 school year. RISD’s bond steering committee formally presented the 2021 bond package at a Jan. 11 meeting. The bond proposal includes two propositions and would not increase RISD’s tax rate. RISD Chief Financial Officer David Pate says the district is able to not raise its tax rate because of a strong financial profile in which RISD has issued refunding bonds and made conservative estimates for future property value growth. “Knowing that Richardson ISD is on this five-year bond cycle, [we’re just] really trying to create capacity in future

years to minimize the impact of a future election,” Pate says. Senate Bill 30 requires RISD to have two separate propositions on the ballot, bond committee member Bonnie Altimore says. The committee proposed a main proposition in the amount of $637 million, which will include funding for teaching and learning, fine arts, athletics and special education. A technology proposition is proposed for $113 million. The bond would transform RISD’s junior high model by shifting sixthgraders from elementary schools into a middle school model with seventh- and eighth-graders. The Lake Highlands school community is first in line for this transformation.

Phase 1 of the sixth-grade transformation timeline would rebuild Lake Highlands Junior High and renovate Forest Meadow Junior High. The first sixth-grade class of Lake Highlands Middle School and Forest Meadow Middle School would come by the 2024-25 school year. RISD Superintendent Jeannie Stone says the idea for the middle school transformation came from the district’s 2017 strategic plan as a facility solution. “Many of our schools were really limited in space, and we’ve had, in the past, to overflow kids from the neighborhood school,” Stone says. “The Facilities Committee saw this as a solution to move this forward as part of their strategic plan. this decision needed to be made from the eyes of curriculum and instruction.” A facilities audit found the cost to renovate Lake Highlands Junior High and fix its systems, which were at end of life, would cost as much as it would to rebuild the school, says Sandra Hayes, RISD assistant superintendent of district operations. “We have never torn down a building and rebuilt it. We have only renovated at this point,” Hayes says. “But due to the age and the condition of the systems, this is in the best interest of taxpayer dollars.” The facility needs at Lake Highlands and Forest Meadow junior highs are why RISD is tackling the middle school

The social and emotional needs of sixthgraders played a part in RISD’s middle school transformation as well, says RISD Deputy Superintendent Tabitha Branum. “Two years in junior high is not enough time to really build a community and help students transition during what is a ton of personal and physical change,” Branum says. “We need more time with them in the middle school configuration.” The board approved a resolution at the Jan. 11 meeting to create a true middle school learning environment. Stone says the board passed the

resolution to formalize the entire transformation plan beyond the 2021 bond and into a potential bond in 2026. “I think this is one of the first times as we were planning for one bond, we were actually planning for the next one and needing to look at this long-range plan,” Stone says. RISD will first vote on the 2021 bond election, which district officials say will be called Feb. 8. “The board feels like there is a commitment being made to the community,” Stone says. “We’re doing Lake Highlands in the first bond, but the remainder of the schools will be completed in the subsequent bonds.”

he was born on Valentine’s Day, which seems more divine providence than coincidence. Valarie Kaur is an advocate for social justice who has created the Revolutionary Love Project. Kaur’s Sikh faith is the fifth largest world religion. It began in the 15th century in India and has moved around the globe. In the face of an Indian caste system, the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, asserted the oneness of God and the equality of all human beings. Dallas is blessed with a vibrant Sikh community that lives peaceably and works for justice alongside neighbors of other religions. There are 500,000 Sikhs in the United States. You can tell the men by their turbans, which conceal uncut hair that is a sign of devotion to God and a promise to neighbors that they can be depended upon to fight for right. Kaur has published a new book, “See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love.” She writes, “Love is more than a feeling. Love is a form of sweet labor: fierce, bloody, imperfect, and life giving—a choice we make over and over again. … This labor engages all our emotions. Joy is the gift of love. Grief is the price of love. Anger protects that which is loved. And when we think we have reached our limit, wonder is the act that returns us to love. … ‘Revolutionary love’ is the choice to enter into wonder and labor for others, for our opponents and for ourselves in order to transform the world around us.” In our city, state, nation and world, we need to practice revolutionary love that transforms our collective life. The divisions of religions, conflicts of cultures and differences of politics have become all too well known to us and threaten to defeat our union and our Union. They cannot prevail if we want to live together fruitfully on this planet. We can find our way toward one another by practicing the highest ideals of
