Lake Highlands High School assistant football coach Tanner Craven and his wife, Courtney, a P.E. teacher in Plano ISD, created a solution to children showing up for class in wornout, ill-fitting sneakers, called Soles for Souls. The aim of this nonprofit is to provide new athletic shoes to elementary school kids. So far, Soles for Souls has delivered more than 150 pairs of shoes to kids aged 5-13 in Plano. They’re now collecting to help students at LH’s Thurgood Marshall Elementary. Donations can be made to @solesforsouls on Venmo.

Megan Timme was elected to represent single-member District 1 surrounding Pearce High School. Chris Poteet and Amanda Clair will be on the runoff ballot after securing 36% and 27% of resident votes, respectively. The district also placed a $750 million bond on the ballot, which passed with 63% of the vote.

ince she was a kid, Leigh Sendra had a soft spot for needy animals. Now as an adult, Sendra has a nonprofit clinic dedicated to such animals. Sendra opened CHEW, which stands for Compassion Hope Education Wellness, Animal Clinic in January on Walnut Hill Lane. After finding success with her DFW-based Doodle Rock Rescue, she started CHEW Animal Clinic to help Dallas’ most dire pets.

HOW DID YOU GET TO DALLAS?

I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, my whole life. I went to TCU, then off to Atlanta for a couple of years and then came back to Texas in 2001, so I’ve been back in Dallas about 20 years.

Oh, absolutely, as a little kiddo as well. I always tried to save that bird that wasn’t flying or feeding the stray cat. I remember in college, a raccoon was hit by a car, and I drove around all night long trying to find a veterinarian to take this raccoon. Finally, I was able to get him into one vet clinic, and he had a broken jaw. I would go visit this raccoon every day. When that raccoon became healthy again, it tried to bite me, and I was like ‘Yeah OK, it’s not going to be a pet.’ I had kitty cats and birds. Whatever you could find that needed some help, I would try to help out.

We offer vaccination, which is wellness. We spay and neuter. I think what sets us apart from a lot of other nonprofits is that we do diagnostics. We have the ability to do ultrasound, we have a digital X-ray, a full lab, and we can also do hospitalization. WHAT REQUIREMENTS MUST SOMEONE HAVE TO MEET TO SEEK SERVICES FROM CHEW ANIMAL CLINIC?

Right now, we work with rescue groups that are 501(c)3s, so nonprofit status. We do have a criteria that they either fit within the military or are retired or that they’re within an income bracket that’s listed on our website.

a need in the Dallas area, specifically for spaying and neutering. What I have found is that there is such a limited resource for diagnostics, and that really is where these patients need us the most. These families just can’t afford the diagnostics. They’re surrendering due to a medical condition that they can’t afford to care for. That’s probably my biggest reason behind doing this. WHY LAKE HIGHLANDS?

Regarding location, honestly, because I found a great location. It sits on almost two acres. It has a freestanding building, which I absolutely loved. The layout, I had an amazing architect who donated her time to work with the footprint. What I want to do with the acre we

sit on, in the parking lot itself, is I want to do community events. I want to do adoption events with other rescues and that’s what I was looking for in a location. I don’t want to be a shopping mall because I want to have community events and not bother the neighbors. WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR CHEW ANIMAL CLINIC?

The main goal is to have extended hours, long-term goals, to be 24 hours. YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD?

We have a veterinarian from the Lake Highlands area. Dr. Deason is from Lake Highlands and she’s lived in here for a long time; the

love that she has for Lake Highlands solidifies why we’re here in this community. She’s well-respected and loved in the community. We have had a lot of people who have come by and dropped off some things we needed. Other supplies that we’ve needed have come out of the Lake Highlands area. DO YOU H AV E A NY PETS OF YOUR OWN?

I have a 100-some thing-pound pitbull ridgeback who is the culde-sac favorite. People are pretty intimidated by him, but he is the sweetest, kid-loving dog. Everyone loves Tucker. I’ve got a Chihuahua terrier mix, Tilly. And then through my rescue, I have an aussiedoodle, Pele.

Sometimes I don’t. Volunteers help out with the rescue. I’ve been blessed with such an amazing group of volunteers with my rescue that I have been able to delegate a ton of this over to them. (It’s) not to say that I’m hands off with the rescue, but had they not been there and taken on what they’ve taken on, I couldn’t have done it. My time has been spent developing the clinic to make sure that this is successful. The only way I’m doing that is to depend on the volunteers at the rescue, and they’ve really stepped up.

n g e l a Wa l t e r s c h e i d w a s looking for a new star t for herself and her two boys after completing a 1.5-year prison sentence. But shortly after release, the mom of three was in a race agains t time as her abusive e x-husband had tracked her down once more. In t h e n i c k o f t i m e , Wa l t e r s c h e i d came across Exodus Ministries, a residential discipleship nonprofit. Exodus Ministries is an intensive, comprehensive, residential, discipleship program for formerly incarcerated mothers, reuniting them with their children to achieve a productive and fulfilling life through Jesus Christ. It offers a place to live, tools for success and spiritual support. “Exodus just fit into what I was looking for in my life,” Walterscheid says. “It was faith-based and it felt like

G od was pushing me in this direction. This is the place for me.” After 18 months in prison, Maricela Espinosa knew she couldn’t restart her and her daughter’s life alone. Exodus would allow her time to work and save money while having a roof over their heads. Espinosa knew returning to her h o m e t o w n i n A n d r e w s , Te x a s , w a s not an option. “ I k n e w t h a t i f I w a s go i n g t o go back home, I was probably going to have to hurr y up and start selling drugs again so I could get my own house,” she says. Wa l t e r s c h e i d a n d E s p i n o s a c o m e f r o m d i ff e r e n t l i f e e x p e r i e n c e s , b u t the pursuit of a be tter life for their children unites them. These mothers are both working toward their goals with the help of Exodus.

MARICELA’S STORY Espinosa wanted to restart her life “the right way” after being released from prison last May, and Exodus could give her the stable housing and job security she needed. But because of the pandemic, she had to return home for two weeks and face the temptation of walking away from her new opportunity. “It was hard because I’m trying to come over here but I had people in my ear saying, ‘Ah, don’t go. Stay…’” she says. The single mom made it through quarantine and arrived at Exodus on May 27 with her

12-year-old daughter. She found it challenging to adjust to Exodus' litany of rules. The moms are required to get a job, turn in all earnings, attend personal growth classes, go to church every Sunday, complete a regular chore, go to weekly counseling with their kids and meet an 8:45 p.m. curfew. For the first time, Espionsa could no longer abide by her own rules. “There’s a lot of times I wake up and have to pray about it because I just want to throw in the towel and get what I have saved up and leave,” she says. “It’s hard.”

Espinosa’s three children, two of which are older, motivate her to persist on her most difficult days. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for them, I don’t know what I’d be doing in life. I don’t know if I would even be here. They are the only reasons I will try every day,” she says. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t even care about life. My kids have changed my life. That’s why I’m going to keep trying, for them three.” While Exodus’ limits are difficult, Espinosa is grateful to not have to worry about paying bills during a pandemic. “It’s letting me get there the right way and not go back to my old ways,” she says about Exodus. The mom of three works at Well Grounded Coffee. She values her close relationship with her boss and coffee shop co-founder Natalie Huscheck. “That’s one of my prayers that has been answered,” she says. Espionsa says the camaraderie between her and the moms has also been crucial in her experience at Exodus. They’re like sisters, she says, and are able to lean on each other. “I wouldn’t ask for any other ladies to be in the program with,” she says. Graduation day for Espionsa and her daughter was in May. Her primary goals are to continue working and raise her 12-year-old. “I want to be happy again, but the right way,” she says. However, the future is uncertain for the single mom. Espinosa was considering moving back home to Andrews if she was unable to find housing here after graduating. “Now that I have a background now, it’s hard to get an apartment,” she says. Espinosa continues looking to her daughter for strength as they embark on their next chapter. “Every day I wake up trying to not give up,” she says. “But I’ve been praying for strength.”

ANGELA’S STORY Walterscheid was born and reared in New Mexico. After graduating high school, she moved to California, but later returned home after getting pregnant with her daughter. She bounced around between Arizona, Idaho and New Mexico before marrying her ex-husband when her daughter was 5 years old. The relationship became abusive soon after. “That is what led me down the road of drugs and addiction and selling drugs,” she says. Walterscheid escaped her abusive relationship after heading to a domestic violence shelter. She moved to Texas to get away from her ex, but went to prison in November 2018 for possession.

Walterscheid’s oldest daughter looked after her young sons, who are now 7 and 10 years old, during her 1.5-year sentence. “They struggled,” she says. “They went through homelessness a couple times when I was in prison.” Walterscheid was released April 1 last year. She found out about Exodus, but had difficulties getting hold of anyone at the start of the pandemic. “A couple of months later, I ended up in (another) domestic violence shelter,” she says. “My ex-husband found us.” Walterscheid reached out to Exodus again. This time, she got an interview. Exodus typically only accepts women right out of prison, but after hearing her story, she

says they made an exception. It only took a few months for Walterscheid to start acclimating to her new life with her two boys. “At first, it was really hard,” she says. “There’s a lot of rules and it’s kind of overwhelming, but it’s been a very positive impact on my life.” After getting her boys to school each morning, Walterscheid then heads to work at Well Grounded Coffee. Like Espinosa, Walterscheid says coffee shop co-founder Huscheck is “more than just a boss.” “They ask us our ideas, they actually listen to what we have to say,” she says. “We have room to move up from being a trainee to becoming a barista to becoming a supervisor. They are willing to help us open our own store eventually.” Halfway through her time at Exodus, Walterscheid noticed a change in her personal growth. “One of the things that I’ve noticed about myself in taking these classes is how important I am and how important (the kids) are and how important it is to put my family’s needs first,” she says. Walterscheid is no longer rushing toward the finish line as she did before. “Everything is in God’s time,” she says. “Whatever I’m going through, I may not see it’s leading me to the outcome I want, but I just got to sit through it. It’s leading me to the outcome I want.” Walterscheid graduates from Exodus this July. A few of her goals in the next chapter include becoming financially independent, finding a stable job and getting a car and home. Within herself, Walterscheid aims to continue her strong relationship with her faith. “When you start dealing with the real world, paying your bills and working every day and having kids, it’s so easy to fall away and get sidetracked,” she says. “Having a strong relationship with God brings peace of mind. I’m a better mom when I’m not worried and stressed out. I see what happened to myself when I fell away completely from God, and I don’t ever want to go back there.” The mom of three plans to continue working at Well Grounded Coffee and go back to school to get a massage therapy license. “Never let your past define you,” she says. “No matter what you’ve done, no matter who you’ve hurt. It’s never too late to rebuild a relationship. Never feel like you’re not worthy or good enough to have better and want more.” june 2021

hotographer and filmmaker Katie Norris’ life changed 10 years ago when she received a phone call from a mother who was weeping over her son’s recent brain tumor diagnosis. “Someone told me you could help me,” the mom said to Norris on the phone. “I couldn’ t breathe thinking about what she must have been going through having to speak those words,” Norris says. This was the moment Norris knew she needed to use her passion for photography and filmmaking to help those enduring hardship. “I grabbed the first filmmaker I knew and we went in there and captured this stor y. They lost their son a few weeks later. We were able to capture that last smile on their son’s (face),” Norris says. “ We all hope to find a calling in life. I ac tually got a phone call that changed my life.” A f t e r t e l l i n g t h i s s t o r y, some of Norris’ friends and family asked her how long she planned on continuing this work. “Until I get another phone call,” Norris says. “ We’ ll be doing this and keep ser ving families.” T he L ake Highlands nat i v e s t a r t e d t h e n o n p r o fi t Fo t o l a n t h r o p y i n 2 0 1 1 t o celebrate stories of hope and support those over coming insurmountable odds through photography, feature films and doc umentaries. Fotolanthropy ser ved many L ake Highlands families in its beginnings. Initially, the visit with Mills was supposed to be a por trait session and short film. “I’m sitting across this man with no arms and legs. Here’s this guy that’s given ever ything for us,” Norris says. “ T he thought just came to my mind: ‘ What are my arms and legs? What am I giving to him?’ I talked about it with our director, and he had the idea to make a feature film.” Fotolanthropy fundraised and produced what would become Travis: A Soldier’s Story. Norris’ vision was to premiere the film in Dallas and get Mills a standing ovation. celebrate Mills. “ T here was not a dr y eye in the place,” Norris says. The phone started ringing off the hook the next day, with many wanting permission to show the film. Since then, Fotolanthropy has comple ted three feature films. Fotolanthropy’s most recent one, 7 Yards, made its Ne tflix debut earlier this year. T he film tells the stor y of Chris Nor ton, a man who suffered a debilitating spinal cord injur y that left him unlikely to ever move again. After years of physical therapy and training, Norton successfully walked across his college graduation stage and down the wedding aisle with his wife, Emily. “I know that anyone that watches it will walk away feeling connected to one of the charac ters and will walk away inspired and renewed,” Norris says. Fo t o l a n t h r o p y f i l m s a n d documentaries have featured stories about a range of topics including a special needs child, a family’s home lost in a fire and a father with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Nominations for stories typically are submitted on the Fotolanthropy website. T he nonprofit celebrates nominated families with a por trait session and a shor t film of their s tor y. Over the l as t decade, Fotol anthr opy has m a d e o v e r 2 0 s h o r t fi l m s . A t t h e e n d , N o r r i s often realizes the impact these families’ stories have made on her. “It feels so good to give to them, but what you d o n’ t r e a l i z e i s w h e n y o u l o o k b a c k , y o u a d d people to your family,” she says. T he Lake Highlands community has ser ved as a great support in fulfilling Norris’ mission with Fo t o l a n t h r o p y. He r p a s s i o n s f o r p h o t o g r a p h y originated in media classes at L ake Highlands High S chool. “Parents that watched and babysat me when I was little are now cheering us on in what we’re doing with our nonprofit work and cheering us on with our kids,” Norris says. “If Lake Highlands could be a megaphone for this mission and for 7 Yards to push this into the world, we would be so grateful for that. We just want to spread this stor y of hope ever ywhere.”

WHO THEY ARE The faith-based nonprofit ministry came from the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church’s efforts to establish worshipping congregations in apartment communities here in 1996. One location, The New Room Community Center in the Whitehurst Corridor, opened in 2007. After this opening, residents wanted more spiritual and educational involvement, and the hunger need began to rise. The nonprofit became official with the help of 14 families receiving food in early 2012. WHAT THEY DO Feed Lake Highlands offers 15 to 20 pounds of food to every individual in a qualifying Lake Highlands household on a monthly basis. The nonprofit also offers after-school clubs to help

40 children strengthen educational, leadership and life skills. The New Room offers overnight opportunities and day camps throughout the summer. HOW TO HELP The nonprofit’s annual August Topgolf tournament is moving to Oct. 18. Food donations and distribution are ongoing. WHO THEY ARE Mosaic Family Services was founded at East Dallas Counseling Center 28 years ago by Walter Nguyen, a former refugee from Vietnam, to assist struggling refugees and immigrants in the Dallas area. Mosaic’s initial focus was on substance abuse, but its services have now broadened to include health, social and victim services to refugees and immigrants. The nonprofit’s main office is located out of the neighborhood and many of its clients reside in Lake Highlands and Vickery Meadow. WHAT THEY DO The nonprofit offers an emergency domestic violence and human trafficking shelter called Mosaic House. Mosaic offers an onsite licensed daycare facility for mothers to feel comfortable leaving their children while meeting with a legal team, attending counseling or going to job interviews. Mosaic has a full-time counselor who offers play therapy for children and comprehensive counseling for survivors. Other services include case management, a legal team, a citizenship program and more. Mosaic staff can speak over 25 languages. HOW TO HELP In June, Mosaic is hosting a drive-in fundraiser. In August, the nonprofit will hold a virtual trivia night. WHO THEY ARE Founders and longtime educators Paula DeGroat and Diana Baker started Kids-U to give low income children the same educational advantages as higher income peers. DeGroat and Baker based their programs in the low-income apartment communities to provide tutoring in math, language arts and reading for no cost. Kids-U’s first site was at the Deerfield Apartments in the Forest Lane and Audelia Road corridor. The first doors opened to 32 students in December 2002. WHAT THEY DO Kids-U provides out-of-school time programs for students. In the fall, it tutors kindergarten through eighthgraders in the three subject areas. To prevent the summer slide, the nonprofit provides a full-day, five-days-a-week summer enrichment camp. Kids-U offers a FACE (Family and Community Engagement) program that extends

educational reach to adults with ESL and GED classes, adult computer literacy programs, financial literacy programs and parenting workshops. The nonprofit has also collaborated with the Northeast Division of DPD to add a crime watch program. HOW TO HELP Starting July 1 each year, Kids-U hosts a backpack drive for all students. The nonprofit asks for donations of backpacks and supplies to students to have when they return to school in the fall. “We realized that parents in higher-income brackets were able to afford tutoring for their students. Our theory was that if we gave the low-income children the same advantages that their higher income peers were getting, that they could be just as successful.” — Diana Baker, executive director and co-founder

WHO THEY ARE Unlocking DOORS was formed to address Texas and Dallas County’s growing need for community-based offender programs and reintegration services. Founder, president and CEO Christina Melton Crain is a former chairwoman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, an oversight board for the incarceration, parole and probation of Texas adult felons. The Unlocking DOORS founder started the nonprofit to give former offenders a second chance while also cutting crime rates and strengthening communities. WHAT THEY DO The nonprofit offers a comprehensive client re-entry brokerage for individuals 17 years old and older with criminal records. This program consists of a comprehensive risk assessment, an individualized reentry brokerage plan, referrals to community partners and ongoing monitoring and assistance. Unlocking DOORS offers community collaboration, education and training through an annual Texas reentry symposium, public awareness events, community speaking requests and community partner meetings. The nonprofit collects, analyzes and reports sets of evidence-based client data to illustrate predictive trends in criminal justice. HOW TO HELP Unlocking DOORS is currently holding a donation drive. he cicadas are coming! That was the headline in many papers a few weeks ago across the country. Big news. The 17-year cycle of the peculiar creatures that emerge from the ground, shed their outer shells and buzz around our patios is upon us. The reason they are news isn’t just that they come every 17 years; it’s that they symbolize the dependability of nature that hasn’t been disrupted by COVID-19 or climate change the way human life has been. Signs of life abound this spring in Texas after more than a year of pandemic hibernation and then a snow apocalypse that added insult to injury. Many plants, bushes and trees have perished, but green shoots are emerging. A bird has nested with three newborns on the eave of my back porch. For people like me — religious professionals who are weary of preaching to a camera in an empty sanctuary — signs in nature are matched by plans to regather inside our buildings, even if we remain masked for a time. The Centers for Disease Control lifted restrictions on in-person gatherings for worship, weddings, funerals and the like about a month ago. Most of our houses of worship are beginning re-entry now. We are hopeful for the time to come when our tentative fist or elbow bumps turn into handshakes and hugs, when we can drop our judgments about the judgments of our neighbors regarding vaccinations and masks and social distancing, and instead see one another without trying to determine if they are good or bad because of whom they voted for or what news channel they frequent.

Can we get there? Honestly, we have to. The last book the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote was titled Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? That about summarizes it. We have a choice. We can choose to welcome the green shoots of vitality that emerge any time people look beyond differences to the soul of another, or we can allow the differences to define and divide us. How will it be for you when you go back to church or synagogue or mosque in the weeks ahead? Will you see your fellow worshippers as siblings of spirit, united in their common humanity and drawn together by a common faith, or will you carry the legacy of suspicion and fear from these politicized times into your spiritual communities? Religion is meant to unify, to bind people together around common beliefs and practices. Yes, one religion is delineated from another on the same basis. One denomination from another. But the force of identity that gives us a sense of belonging is not meant to overwhelm the force of neighborliness that is necessary for our common survival. Let’s let nature lead us for once. When we see signs of new life, the renewal of the earth and the promise of fecundity, let’s look upon one another in the same way, ever hopeful of what may yet be ahead for one and all.
