Leading T H E W AY F O R W O M E N IN BUSINESS By Stephanie Holliday A name synonymous with strong women in business, Sandra Harris has proved with almost a-decade stronghold in the mining industry, that being female and hailing from a regional city is no barrier to remarkable success. As corporate services director of All West Engineering and Maddison Wright Engineering, Sandra and her business partner Paul Harris had a lightbulb moment in 2009 which quickly grew to become a Goulburn Valley success story of epic proportions. Paul Harris identified a gap in the mining industry and together they began a journey whereby they matched high skilled workers from the Goulburn Valley with positions in Western Australia’s mining regions, creating life-changing opportunities for their employees and impressing the mining industry with such a high calibre of tradespeople. Sandra and Paul later created a strategic partnership with Heath Wright and Conor Egan forming Maddison Wright Engineering and Proform Industrial setting up Engineering Workshops across Victoria. “We have grown from having just five employees to over 250, across four states. We may not have started with a distinct strategy, but we have flourished thanks to our drive, passion and vision shared by all partners,” said Sandra. “Our team is made up of people with different strengths

and niche skillsets, but we work collaboratively and so well together to encompass our organisation’s core values.” Sandra may be the only woman in a leadership team of mostly men, but that is a non-issue. “There’s been a big shift towards women in business and as leaders in recent years. I think the media has played a key role in this, women are being recognised for perhaps the different dynamic in leadership they bring to the table and it’s becoming apparent that equality across the board is in every organisation’s best interest,” Sandra said. Sandra now heads a group of 6 companies with business interests in the mining, engineering, and tech spaces. She works daily with a dynamic group of business partners.
“I have been fortunate enough in my business partnerships to work with an incredibly talented and inspiring group of entrepreneurs, that all support and value each other’s dynamics.” As the groups ventures continue to grow, Sandra has a key message for everyone in business, whether they are finding their growth to be stagnant or are just starting out. “My message to anyone scaling their business, small or large, is to be transparent with your team. Especially internally, as it builds trust and increases engagement. When you have an engaged and dynamic team, they are content and the results of that is efficiency and a desire to achieve greater outcomes.”

THE trade industry is the second largest in Australia, yet women make up one percent of building trades countrywide. This number is increasing, and more young women like Shana Brand, fourth-year painting apprentice with Shepparton’s Colour Your Castle, are choosing the paintbrush and measuring tape over scissors or shears. “I started my apprenticeship late because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. At school we had to do a TAFE course. I tried hair and beauty because it interested me, but I really liked painting and I thought a trade would give me better career options and more freedom.” Shana learnt painting from her dad before starting her apprenticeship with Colour Your Castle. “For a long time, girls were taught to pick what was easy or what they knew. You don’t know what you’re getting into when you pick a trade, but you have a lot to gain.” “I’m glad there are other women a part of the trade industry. THE opportunity to call the shots in business and offer employment opportunities to other women, at Shepparton’s only all-female pharmacy has been a game-changer for Reid’s Pharmacy co-owners Kate Boswell and Leticia Keady. They met at university before Leticia followed pharmacy to Broome and Kate to Melbourne. Both country girls, a year ago they bought Reid’s Pharmacy together from original owner, Steve Reid. Managing the pharmacy through Covid has been a whirlwind, but both Leticia and Kate are proud of their team, and they have kept the business alive by providing great service and good advice. Kate always loved chemistry at school. She remembers a TV ad that clicked for her. It said “’Pharmacy, it’s good people science.” Kate didn’t have to sit in a lab all day, she wanted to be able to interact with the people that her chemistry skills could help. “Going through uni, classes were like 70 percent female. There are way more females doing pharmacy, but somehow it ends up being more males in leadership positions,” Leticia reflected. Recently married, Leticia admits she sought advice from Steve before buying the business and starting a family.

“I said, ‘Maybe I should wait, maybe I should have kids first then look at this later,’ and he said to me, ‘Would you have kids then run a marathon?’” I realised that I could pursue my career and my personal goals as well. KATIE Singleton-Foley is the clinic manager at Fur Life Shepparton. She began working with animals after having kids, by pursuing a vet nurse traineeship. Katie’s passion has seen her help animals in Australia and in Cambodia, where she lived for eight years. She had her son with her in Cambodia and Katie says she has been lucky to work in family friendly practices, which has enabled her to juggle motherhood with her aspirations. “I was extremely lucky that my son was old enough then that I could pick him up from school and have him in the staff room. Every day she travels a distance to get to Shepparton for work. WHEN The Adviser team began planning this special feature on inspirational women in the Goulburn Valley, it wasn’t long before we thought of the team at Finny’s Manchester, a success story of fine service for over 33 years. The family owned and run business founded by Ray and Anne Finn has survived all the ups and downs of the recession ‘we had to have’ in the early 1990s, the Global Financial Crisis which began in 2007, and in more recent times, the extraordinary COVID -19 period. RUNNING a pub was thought of as ‘man’s work’, particularly a rural pub in a small town like Rochester. Olivia James bought and refurbished the historic 1870s-built Commercial Hotel, now known as the Rochester Tavern, in 2019. Dr Jen Barker is always up for a challenge, and the physical demands of chiropractic, and barriers faced by women, have driven her to improve and succeed. Having a baby has been a game-changer. “Being in this industry, a contractor and having a baby I found it really tough mentally, physically and financially, particularly during Covid. Physically adjusting patients whilst 36 weeks pregnant with a face shield and mask on was definitely a challenging experience.” “I am lucky enough to have a husband and parents who are very supportive and who understood just how vulnerable having a baby made me feel in relation to work. I was also very lucky to have a supportive workplace whereby I could start back at work at my own pace.”
Dr Yvette LcCerf was always interested in health, but her passion for chiropractics began playing netball. “One day we were playing, and all of a sudden I became stiff, and I couldn’t throw the ball,” she said. A football player on her team helped her by making some adjustments. “He really kicked off my interest.” “Working in a male dominated industry has its challenges. We have clients ask for male doctors, saying that they need someone ‘strong’ to fix them. They’re always assured that the female doctors are just as strong, and they’re always shocked when we give them results beyond what they thought possible.” Dr Julia Bianco started in kinesiology before chiropractic, she’s taken five gap years, failed university, and still has two “expensive pieces of paper,” and a great career to show for it.

Julia strongly believes, “If I’m not impressing myself, I’m not impressing anyone.” Reflecting on high school, Julia sees how she wasn’t prepared for life after school, and most damagingly, how she pigeon-holed herself in the “I’m-not-a-smart-girl,” clique. “I convinced myself that I wasn’t the smart girl, that I could only do general maths, not maths methods.
