Menopause: A new beginning MENOPAUSE is a natural stage of life, usually occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. The years leading up to it can bring a range of changes. Periods may become irregular, and women may experience hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, tiredness, mood changes or difficulty concentrating. Some women also notice changes in their skin, hair, bladder or sexual health, joint aches and pain including anxiety and irritability. Every woman’s experience is different. For some, symptoms are mild; for others, they can significantly affect daily life, relationships, work and wellbeing. These changes can begin several years before periods stop and may continue afterwards. Managing menopause is about looking at the whole woman, rather than focusing only on individual symptoms. This includes considering her symptoms, general health, lifestyle, family and personal health risks, and appropriate health checks.
Any plan should be individualised, taking into account the woman’s concerns, preferences and goals. There are a range of options that may help, including lifestyle changes, practical and non-medical approaches, contraception when needed, non-hormonal treatments and menopausal hormone therapy. The most appropriate approach will depend on the individual woman and her circumstances. Please contact your health professional to discuss the same. Menopause is not an illness or something that needs to be “fixed”. It is an important stage of life and an opportunity to prioritise health, wellbeing and healthy ageing. With greater awareness and the right support, women can approach this new chapter feeling informed, confident and empowered. Menopause can be seen as a new beginning—a good time to pause, take stock of your health and lifestyle, and make a commitment to your wellbeing in the years ahead.

From cleaning windows to Blizzards’ jewellery designer WHEN Lyn and Craig Blizzard opened Blizzards Fine Jewellers 32 years ago, their daughter Kara was just four years old. Both had been working at local chain jeweller F.C. Johns when they decided to take the leap and establish their own business, despite having three young children at home. Kara remembers the hard work her parents put into building Blizzards, with her mother Lyn becoming a familiar face in the store while managing customer service, stock, bookkeeping and everything in between. Kara and her two brothers also spent plenty of time at the shop growing up, supported by their grandparents who helped care for the children while Lyn and Craig established the business. Despite growing up surrounded by jewellery, there was never an expectation that Kara would join the family business. “Mum and Dad were always really supportive of whatever we wanted to do,” she said. “We were never made to feel like we had to be part of the jewellery business, and to be honest, I had no idea that I would eventually end up working here.” Instead, Kara followed her creative interests, working as a makeup artist for four years after developing a love of art at school. She also enjoyed computers, although she never imagined the two interests would eventually combine in a career designing jewellery.
After living and exploring NSW, Kara returned home around the same time a long-term Blizzards staff member was preparing to retire. “I remember saying to my brothers, ‘Hmm, one of us probably needs to know a little bit about the business, just in case,’” she said. “So I stepped in — and then I ended up loving it.” Kara gradually developed her own role within the business, learning from her parents and experienced staff while bringing her creativity and digital skills to jewellery design. Her father Craig became one of her biggest teachers, passing on his extensive knowledge of diamonds and jewellery design. “Dad can hand draw jewellery designs and he is incredible at it,” she said. “I learnt so much from him, and over time I was able to bring my own way of designing into the business.” While Craig could bring a design to life with pencil and paper, Kara embraced computer-aided design, technology and social media, helping bring a modern perspective to the long-established family business. Kara said her parents trusted her ideas and were willing to embrace change, while the values they established more than three decades ago remain at the heart of Blizzards. “Kindness, honesty, genuine care for clients and quality jewellery” are values she continues to carry forward.

Working alongside her parents has also given Kara a greater appreciation for what they achieved. “I feel so honoured that Mum and Dad managed to open a jewellery store while raising three children, but still made us feel like they were there for us and supported us growing up,” she said. Now a mother of three herself, Kara hopes to continue the family business while balancing tradition with the need to move with the times. “I think you have to keep moving with the times, but that honest and caring customer service is what really counts,” she said. Making a difference beyond the classroom FOR Irene Price and Kylie Richards, working at Shepparton ACE Secondary College is about much more than administration; it is about helping create a safe, supportive environment where young people can thrive. With 16 years at ACE, Business Manager Irene Price has watched the school evolve from an Adult Education Community into a Year 7-12 secondary college, while maintaining its small-school approach. After beginning her career in administration, bookkeeping, compliance and HR, Irene established ACE’s compliance administration role before stepping into the Business Manager position five years ago. “I was nervous at first because the role involved so many new areas for me, but I took on the challenge, and here I am five years later,” she said. Today, Irene oversees finance, government funding, budgeting, HR and general administration, supporting the college to operate smoothly behind the scenes.
Admissions and Compliance Officer Kylie Richards has been part of the ACE team for five-and-a-half years, initially joining as a receptionist before moving into compliance. For Kylie, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is watching students grow. This year, she will see some of the Year 12 students she welcomed as Year 7s graduate. “I love what the school stands for: kindness, safety and responsibility,” she said. Both women value the relationships they have built with students, families and colleagues, describing ACE as a workplace where staff genuinely support one another. Their advice to young women entering the workforce is simple: stay curious, keep learning, ask questions and embrace opportunities to grow. For Irene, experience is also something to value. “There’s a Chinese saying, ‘It’s the older ginger that is the spicier one’,” she said. “Experience and wisdom come with time.”

Reflecting on a career of service to northern Victoria Message by Wendy Lovell, Member for Northern Victoria IT has been the privilege of my life to represent northern Victorians in the Victorian Parliament, and throughout my career, I have been driven by several enduring priorities: stronger regional communities, better infrastructure, improved health services, quality education, support for vulnerable people, water security, and opportunities for future generations to live and work in regional Victoria. I hope I have done the region proud. As Minister for Housing, I inherited a basket case of a portfolio, with a waiting list that had had blown out to 41,000 families. In my four years as Minister we stabilised the budget, invested in maintenance, and built new houses which allowed us to move almost 7,000 families off the waiting list and into homes. My proudest achievement in the housing portfolio is implementing the Education First Youth Foyers, one of which is located right here in Greater Shepparton. I delivered three Youth Foyers in Shepparton, Broadmeadows and Glen Waverley, and I convinced Richard Wynne, the Minister who replaced me to invest in two more in Wodonga and Wangaratta. The Foyers are co-located with TAFE and provide subsidised housing and counselling services for homeless young people. In return, they sign a mutual obligation contract to participate in education, training or work. Around 1200 young people have benefited from support
since the first Youth Foyer opened in 2013, and incredibly, 89% have left the program engaged in further education or employment. I have also heard of more than a dozen former Foyer students who have now gone on to purchase their own homes. Their success stories fill me with pride, and inspire me with hope for what the next generation will achieve. In the Early Childhood portfolio, I was proud to lead the sector through a period of significant investment in children, educators and new facilities, and during my term as Minister more than 97% of four-year-olds participated in kindergarten which was a record for our state. On a local level there have been many projects that I am proud to have played a part in delivering, including but not limited to, our Genesis Care Radiotherapy Service, Stage 1 of the GV Health redevelopment, the Echuca Regional Health redevelopment, the new Echuca-Moama Bridge, and the widening of the Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway. I also worked closely with Premier Denis Napthine to design and deliver a rescue package for SPC that saved an iconic business and hundreds of jobs in our community. Designing a future with confidence BUILDING design is an industry where creativity meets technical knowledge, problem-solving and practical thinking, and for the women building their careers at Bruce Mactier Building Designers, there is no shortage of opportunities to learn and grow. For residential draftsperson Jessica Evans, who joined the firm six months ago, her interest in building design began at a young age. “When I was younger, I had the opportunity to go on site with my auntie and other women who were a mix of architects and interior designers. From that point, I knew I wanted to do what they were doing,” Jessica said. “I wanted to make an impact like they did.” Today, Jessica works as a residential draftsperson, bringing concepts into readable construction drawings and measuring existing conditions to help the team better understand client needs. One of the things she enjoys most is
the opportunity to create something from scratch that will eventually become somebody’s home. “I get to create something from scratch that will become someone’s home in the future,” she said. Jessica says collaboration between clients, builders and other professionals is essential to producing quality designs. For Ami Bhadani, who joined Bruce Mactier three months ago as a residential draftsperson, building design combines her interest in creating spaces with her architectural background. Ami has a Master of Architecture and says she enjoys seeing ideas develop from a simple concept into something that can be built. “I also enjoy that not every day is the same as every project is different, and there are always different site conditions, client requirements, and practical challenges to consider,” she said.

Her day-to-day work involves drafting and preparing drawings for different stages of residential projects, following up with senior designers and attending sites to take measurements and understand existing conditions. Working with experienced senior designers and receiving feedback has helped Ami develop professionally, while her experience working in India and now in Australia has also helped her grow through exposure to Australian work culture. Ami believes women bring different
perspectives, ideas and approaches to the building and design industry, alongside the individual strengths and experiences each person brings. For young women considering a career in the field, her advice is to be confident in their abilities, ask questions and take on challenges. Jessica shares a similarly positive outlook. “There is nothing holding you back from being a building designer, because a young woman can do whatever they want to do,” she said.

Guiding people towards their purpose FOR Tracey Toy, starting Guiding with Purpose was about creating opportunities for people living with disability or facing barriers to believe in themselves, to build confidence and to pursue goals that matter to them. The business supports participants to discover their purpose, develop practical skills, build independence and navigate challenges, with a focus on opening doors to employment, volunteering, social connection and community participation. “The most rewarding part of our work is witnessing others succeed in areas
they once believed were out of reach,” Tracey said. “My focus is on building their capacity to believe in themselves and strengthening their confidence so they can pursue their goals, whatever they may be. I also recognise that progress is not always straightforward; when obstacles or “brick walls” appear, there is always a way to work through or around them with the right support and mindset.” One particularly meaningful journey saw a participant build their confidence, secure their first job, progress into an apprenticeship and
successfully become qualified. They have since progressed further and are now working as a team leader. Tracey believes that success is not defined by a particular destination, but by seeing participants achieve their purpose or steadily work toward the goals they have chosen for themselves. “My professional journey has led me to focus on supporting people who are unsure of where to begin. If I don’t have the answer, I always strive to find the how, what, when, and why so we can move forward and reach our goals together,” she said.

From garage office to Wyndham Street MORE than 15 years ago, Rachel Nugent started Shepparton Conveyancing Services from a garage she had converted into an office. Today, the business operates from its established Wyndham Street premises, providing personalised, faceto-face conveyancing services.
