Briefly Noted BLOOD DONORS IN HIGH DEMAND
Ongoing shortages of type O and A blood supplies have prompted an urgent call for an extra 12,000 people to donate immediately, as peak winter illness keeps donors away and emergency orders remain high. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood said recent appeals have prevented supplies falling to critical levels but have not been enough to replenish low supplies of O-positive and O-negative blood types, which are types used in emergencies. A-positive blood stocks have also dropped. Around 8,000 units of blood, plasma and platelets are issued as urgent or life-threatening orders every month, meaning they must be dispatched within as little as 30 minutes to support patients in critical situations. Greater Shepparton City Council has secured the future of kindergarten services in Katandra West, with a lease arrangement now in place with Goulburn Region Preschool Association (GRPSA). The agreement paves the way for GRPSA to become the approved provider and operator of Katandra West Kindergarten from 2027, subject to the completion of final regulatory and administrative requirements. As part of the transition, community members may begin to see changes to branding and communications associated with the kindergarten. These updates will support the transition and preparation for GRPSA’s commencement as operator in 2027.

Preparations underway for Piano Award THE Australian National Piano Award returns to Shepparton in October 2026, bringing the nation’s most gifted emerging classical pianists to Riverlinks Eastbank. Winning the Australian National Piano Award in 2006, acclaimed pianist Amir Farid is returning to Shepparton 20 years later, this time as an adjudicator. Now based in New York, Mr Farid said winning the prestigious award had been a defining moment in his career. “It gave me the confidence to inject some belief into myself that I had what it takes to pursue a career in music,” he said. Mr Farid said one of the competition’s defining features was its focus on pianists aged 21 to 35, allowing artists to compete once they had developed greater maturity and musical identity. “I think artistically it takes time to mature, and you can’t really show your true artistic colours until you’re a little bit older in most cases. I like

Having listened to over 14 hours of audition recordings to help select the 14 finalists, Mr Farid said the standard this year would be exceptional. “I know first-hand it’s going to be an incredibly high standard,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to hearing the finalists, although ranking them is the part I’m nervous about.” He said what continued to make the Australian National Piano Award unique was not only its format, but the fact it was held in regional Victoria. “Every time I come here, it just feels like a community. It feels like a family,” Mr Farid said. “I’ve met so many people and made friends for life, and it feels like I’m coming back to a family every time I come to Shepparton. I have the award to thank for that.” Mr Farid believes hosting a competition of this calibre in Shepparton is something the entire
region should celebrate. “So many things go to the capital cities, but there’s so much more happening in the big centres outside the capitals,” he said. “To have more focus on those centres, I think is great for the country.” He encouraged people, regardless of their musical background, to experience the event. “We have 14 of the greatest talents in the country all coming to Shepparton over one week in October. That’s a very unique experience,” he said. “Even if you have no background in classical music, you’re in for a treat. It’s the best of the best.” The Australian National Piano Award will be held in Shepparton from October 5 to 10, bringing Australia’s finest emerging pianists together to compete for one of the country’s richest and most respected piano prizes.
Crash reignites calls for dormant traffic lights THERE are renewed calls for the activation of traffic signals at the corner of Wyndham and McIntosh Streets, Shepparton, following another serious traffic accident on August 5. RoadSafe Goulburn Valley believes the incident may have been preventable had the fully constructed traffic lights been operational. The signals were installed as part of a $3.1M road upgrade that began in October 2020, but have never been switched on, almost six years after work commenced and long after the physical infrastructure was completed. The intersection and dormant traffic signals have been a concern for locals for some time, with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) maintaining that activation has been delayed due to the need to coordinate the signals with rail safety works on the Shepparton Line. RoadSafe GV said the community has repeatedly been told the matter is a complex, multi-agency issue, but argued this should not leave completed safety infrastructure unused for years. Greater Shepparton City Council, local media and community members have consistently raised concerns about the intersection, while Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has raised the issue in Parliament and pressed successive governments for a firm activation date. RoadSafe GV committee member Callum Phillips said the latest collision highlighted the need for action. “Our community has watched these lights sit idle for years, and now we’ve had yet another serious crash at the exact intersection they were built to protect,” he said. “That’s a warning we can’t afford to ignore again.” Callum said the newly appointed Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Paul Hamer, has an opportunity to demonstrate that regional road safety

was a priority. “As the newly appointed Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Mr Hamer has an early opportunity to demonstrate that regional road safety will be treated as a genuine priority under his portfolio, not another longrunning case study in delay,” he said. RoadSafe Goulburn Valley is calling on DTP to provide a clear, public timeline for activating the traffic signals, urgently review interim safety measures while works are finalised, and provide transparent, regular updates on the status of the rail-signalling coordination works. “We are not asking for anything new,” Mr Phillips said. “This infrastructure already exists. We are asking for the Department of Transport and Planning and Minister Hamer to finish the job they started in 2020 and give this intersection the protection it was always meant to have.”

Pets, people and policy! Did you know that people living in retirement villages now have a legal right to keep pets? Under recent changes to Victorian law, it’s now implicitly accepted that pets offer real benefits to the mental and physical health of their owners and that access to these benefits should not be unreasonably restricted. Many people will be applauding this change – especially animal lovers who have an existing pet they may want to take with them when they move into a retirement village. But others may view the change with trepidation. For example, potential new neighbours in a retirement village might not share the same affection for any new ‘beast on the block’. This may be even more so if a new four-legged neighbour is going to turn out to be a little on the yappy side (in the case of dogs), or one who wanders freely into neighbours’ yards at all hours (in the case of cats), or has any other undesirable attributes. How to strike a balance between these new legal rights and the rights of others NOT to share their lives with a pet if they don’t want one around? Walking home By Aaron Cordy THE Salvation Army Shepparton held its Homeless Walk around Victoria Park Lake on Friday, August 7, drawing attention to an issue that still affects many in the community, but one we don’t always want to acknowledge. “Salvation Army, like many of the services in town, are constantly aware and more than aware of the level of homelessness in our community,” said Shepparton Corps Officer Major Scott Smallacombe. “Just in the last few weeks, as the river just beside us rose, a number of homeless people, who normally would camp on the lands just a few meters away from us, were suddenly
not just homeless, but even the homelessness camps were washed away and they just had nowhere to stay. “It is the reality of life in Shepparton, parklands is where many of our homeless communities stay, also throughout town. It's very much in our face the reality for many people. So we thank you for coming today because today is about not necessarily the solution but constantly raising this as something that has to be dealt with. “We think about a homeless person sleeping in a camp or on park, we probably don't think as much about the young person who's sharing - we call it couchsurfing - staying at your friend's house for a few nights. So, his

Arming Australian farmers through education continued from front page FACED with the many challenges of the time, Nearly, along with her mum Wendy, co-founded Farmers Arm Australia (FAA), a strategic partnership to strengthen education, farmer wellbeing and community support. “When you get taken out by the floods and government runs out of money, where do you find the money to rebuild and bring back for the wider community?” said Nearly. “We want to create local jobs back in the region itself. Create tourism back in Greater Shepparton and the wider community, and education.” FAA has developed a National Proposal with a long-term vision of stronger, more resilient rural communities while increasing awareness,
education, and support across the Australian agricultural sector. The proposal includes the development of a national agriculture educational program from Foundation through to Year 12, creating new pathways and opportunities for future generations. Part of the proposal is establishing Children's Farm in the Goulburn Valley. Located on Nearly’s property, it will provide educational experiences for children and families while strengthening the connection between the broader community and Australian agriculture. “Living in regional Victoria, you understand about farming and how our food gets on the plate, but if you live in Melbourne's CBD itself, a lot of these children know about farm animals; they go to school, they read books. But they have no idea how our food gets into the supermarkets.
They just know mum and dad go shopping, and they pick it up from the supermarket,” said Nearly. “There is no education around that. So, we've built an education program that we'd like to see rolled out nationally through the education department from Prep to Year 12 and, obviously, the greater community, for teaching them everything that is about the Food Nation and how it keeps Australia alive.” Key areas of the proposal include: • Farmer wellbeing and mental health support. • Building stronger community support networks for farming families. • Women in Agriculture. • Understanding the journey from paddock to plate. • Food production and Australia's national food security. • Animal welfare and responsible livestock care. • Agricultural machinery, technology and innovation. • Environmental sustainability and responsible land management. • Manufacturing, transport and export industries connected to agriculture. • The economic contribution farming makes to every Australian's daily life.

IT’S mid-morning Tuesday and Banmira Specialist School student Riley Crisp is surrounded by tools, parts and packaging. He is engrossed in the final assembly of a brand new, bright red ride-on mower for a customer and he couldn’t be happier. Shepp City Garden Equipment, on Benalla Road is where Riley, a Year 11 student, has found his calling in small engine maintenance and repair. “I just want to work here forever, this is my dream workplace,” said Riley. Business owner Mat Sheldon was initially approached by Goulburn Murray Local Learning Employment Network (GMLLEN), which proposed a week of work experience for Riley. That success led to a Structured Workplace Learning arrangement, where Riley will continue to work every Tuesday at Shepp City Garden Equipment throughout 2026, pursue Certificate II Automotive studies every Wednesday and attend high school the rest of the week.
Riley didn’t miss a beat over the recent school holidays, putting in his Tuesday shifts voluntarily. His progression may lead to a school-based apprenticeship next year, allowing Riley to complete his schooling and get a head start on a formal apprenticeship that will set him up for lifelong work. For Mat and Bel Sheldon, it’s already been a win-win for their business. “I can tell the difference when someone does their job, and when someone enjoys doing their job, as for Riley, he just loves his job,” said Mat. “From day one, Riley showed a great attitude and a willingness to learn. He's the type of student who just wants to get in and work, from sweeping up the shop to equipment repair, and he genuinely enjoys it. “I’ve always taken on work experience students, because you never know when you’re going to find your next star.”
Council update on KidsTown progress AS pressure continues to grow around the restoration of KidsTown, Greater Shepparton Cit y Council advises that progress is being made on the future of the adventure playground. Following community backlash, Council formally committed to revitalising KidsTown in August 2025. Community consultation was undertaken in September 2025, providing the community with the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the site. The Master Plan is currently being designed and is anticipated to be completed later this year. Once finalised, it will be made available
for community review, with further public consultation to follow. M ayor, C ou nci l lor Sha ne Sa l i sa id KidsTown holds a special place in the hearts of many community members. "KidsTown has been the place of memories for generations. The community has told us they want the site returned to its former glory, and Council has committed to making that happen," Said Cr Sali. "I know the community has lots of ideas about what should be included and how the site should look. Once the Master Plan design is complete, the community will have the

HOON DRIVER IMPOUNDED Police have received ongoing reports over the past three weeks regarding hoon driving in the Kialla West area. At approximately 10.30am on July 23, 2026, Shepparton Highway Patrol attended Devine Road, Kialla West, following another report of dangerous driving. As a result, one offender was detected and processed for alleged hoon driving offences, driving while disqualified, and drug driving. As a result of the incident, police impounded two vehicles. In Victoria, hoon driving results in vehicle impoundment, and if found guilty, the courts can impose a fine of up to 240 penalty units (in excess of $28,000) and/or a period of imprisonment for up to two years.

Two iconic Fords, one proud owner By Olivia O'Keeffe THE age-old saying, "you're either Holden or your Ford", rings true for Frank Adornato, who, after more than five decades of choosing and owning Fords, has ended up with two very different, albeit equally iconic, models produced by the American car company. Frank's 1959 Ford Fairlane, known as the "Tank" back in the day, remains on the move, fuelling memories from the past while continuing to create new ones today. From driving him to school in the early seventies to seeing his sons and now, his grandson, enjoy the excitement of seasonal car shows from the back seat, the open-air model is undoubtedly a machine still built for making the good times roll. Over the years, and with the help of one of his sons, the car has undergone various modifications and updates, including a new Ford Cleveland motor, a right-hand-drive conversion and a colour change, from its
original red to a canary yellow. In contrast, Frank's newest Ford addition, the 2020 Mustang GT Tickford, has been tuned entirely by Tickford, ensuring any modifications are as sleek and refined as the car itself. Venturing to as many car shows as he can, with the next scheduled for October in Euroa, Frank says each car attracts attention from different demographics. "As far as looks go, you get as many looks in the Mustang as you do in the Fairlane. Different category of people though." Frank says those closest to his generation are often the ones asking about the history of the Fairlane, while younger generations are more likely to admire the Mustang, noticing its Tickford details given it is a relatively rare model. But regardless of how old you are or which time you're living in, Frank says that if you're interested in cars, "later in life, you're going to have a story to tell."

The Saints haven't tasted success since the last time these two teams met in Round 6 on May 9. Their biggest score during that 10-week period has been 65 points. Tatura sits on the bottom rung of the ladder and will see this as its best chance to get a win on the board. The Bulldogs do, however, have to overcome a team that includes some significant star power, the seventh-ranked player in the competition, Mark Marriott, a pair of top-20 disposal winners (Chris Welsh and David Mennen), and an enthusiastic group of youngsters who can turn it on when required. Tatura brothers Harry and Charlie Murdoch had their best games last week in the big loss to United, and if Finn Radley can cap off a great season with another interceptmarking masterclass, maybe this will be closer than when the teams last played. Prediction: Benalla by 17 points. Last time they met: Benalla won by 32 points

A Kyabram win and a Seymour loss could see the teams swap positions on the ladder and potentially leave four teams within two premiership points of one another at the end of the round. A loss, however, could see the Bombers drop to sixth on the ladder and make the final-round match against Euroa a must-win to reach the finals. The Bears have not lost since Round 8 (May 30) and sit one game clear on top of the ladder. They too could be dethroned if they lost to both of last year's grand finalists in the final two home-and-away rounds. Echuca will start favourite in both of its remaining games but has the desperate Cats and Demons to overcome. Prediction: Bears by 11 points in a tight one. Last time they met: Shepparton won by 66 points
MOOROOPNA (5th) v MANSFIELD (9th) Mooroopna sits fifth on the ladder after an amazing run of five wins from its past six games, with the only blemish a two-point loss to the ladder leader. The Cats have snuck up on everyone and, with Mansfield now out of finals contention, only one team enters this match with genuine momentum. A win this weekend will probably be enough for the Cats to play finals, with United (7th) facing Echuca this weekend and Rochester (8th) taking on the Bears in the final round. The interest will lie in how Mansfield handles the in-form Jack Johnston at full-
forward and whether the Betson brothers can continue their outstanding form. Prediction: Mooroopna by six points and all but a guaranteed finals berth. Last time they met: Mansfield won by 78 points in Round 6
ROCHESTER (8th) v EUROA (10th) Rochester must beat Euroa and the Bears in consecutive weeks to make the finals, and even that may not be enough. The loss to the Shepparton Swans on the weekend was a significant body blow, but the Tigers remain only four points outside the top six. If they win their final two games, they will finish on 40 points, but they will also need Mooroopna and Kyabram to lose both of their remaining matches. While that could happen, it is an outside chance at best, with the Bombers facing Euroa in the final round and Mooroopna being the form team of the competition. Rochester by 31 points to keep its faint finals hopes alive. Last time they met: Rochester won by 24 points
SEYMOUR (3rd) v SHEPP SWANS (6th) A win for the never-say-die Swans could lift them from sixth back into fourth if the Bombers and Cats are unable to register wins this weekend. A loss, however, would likely see them fall out of the top six again and leave a final-round clash against Benalla to determine their fate. Seymour has played most of the season without key forward Riley Mason and has struggled to kick big scores. The Lions have a strong defence and midfield, but this is one occasion where I am going with the lower-ranked team. Prediction: Swans by four points. Last time they met: The Swans won by eight points in Round 6
SHEPP UNITED (7th) v ECHUCA (2nd) United sits seventh on the ladder and needs not only to beat Echuca this weekend but also Mansfield next weekend to have any chance of making the finals, and even that might not be enough. The Demons are only two points outside the top six and will be relying on Seymour beating the Swans, Mansfield defeating the Cats and the Bears toppling the Bombers, all of which could easily happen. With that perfect storm, and an upset win of their own, they would rejoin the top six before needing to defeat Mansfield in the final round to hold their place in the playoffs. Prediction: Echuca by 27 points. Last time they met: Echuca won by 37 points

BALME’S INSIGHT: THE MEETING THAT TURNED STEVIE J AROUND AT GEELONG

It was the start of the 2007 season and Neil Balme was thrown immediately into the fire in his role as Geelong footy operations boss. Coming off a disappointing 10thplaced finish in 2006 and an extensive football department review at the end of that season, Balme joined the Cats with the club in a precarious situation. That proved even more true on the eve of that ’07 season, when star forward Steve Johnson was arrested in his home town of Wangaratta after falling asleep in the wrong house after a big night drinking. It was the latest in a line of off-field
indiscretions for the talented forward as several of his senior Geelong teammates began to question if he should even be on the club’s list. With the club set to come down hard on the then 23-year-old, Balme handed the power to the club’s players to sort out their wayward teammate. It was that meeting of hard truths with the likes of Tom Harley and Cameron Ling which turned things around for Johnson, who then spent five weeks training away from the Cats with a club-imposed suspension. Balme reflected on that moment which later proved so pivotal to the club’s 2007 flag win and ultimately helped form his management style as
one of footy’s great administrators. “That was our decision, which I agreed to and may have driven it,” Balme told This is Your Journey thanks to Tobin Brothers. “I saw it as a great opportunity; they had worked with him for years, and I had only just turned up. “It wasn’t terrible, but it was another time he had done something he said he wasn’t going to do and he’s gotten into trouble. “It was relatively minor, but it was another one. Even Tom Harley and Lingy and guys who were accepting of people, they were thinking, ‘How many times can he do this?’. “It was my first time in this situation
with him, so I had a look at it and said, ‘I tell you what, if we burn him now, I can tell you exactly where he’s going to be next week. The same place.’ “So I said, ‘I think you guys should do it instead of us; he’s got to satisfy you rather than us, work with him and give him the chance and see what happens’. “They were quite hard on him, but he really understood and he was quite emotional and thought, ‘This is the end if I don’t look out’. “He was such a terrific player, so that would have been terrible. “He had a five-week suspension… the end of the story is the most beautiful part of it.
“He plays, comes back and we win our first Grand Final since 1963 and who wins the Norm Smith Medal? Steve Johnson. “It doesn’t always work out that way, but it justifies the way you’ve got to be forgiving at times as long as they’re willing to buy in and give back.” Balme discussed his life in footy as a player, coach and administrator and much more on last week’s episode.
