Tattoo free, breast cancer treatment

THE practice of tattooing women with a small mark that is used to align them precisely in the radiation machine for the repeated treatments, has come to an end. Thanks to recent advances in Image Guided Radiation Therapy technology (IGRT), online corrections to a patient’s position can easily be achieved, eliminating the need for the tattoo. For Kyabram resident, Lisa Franke, her recent treatment at GenesisCare in Shepparton has seen her cancer completely treated over twenty visits without the need for a tattoo. First diagnosed in November, Lisa was first operated on then after some time for that to heal, she began radiation treatment in early January over a period of 20 days. Her smile tells you everything you need to know about her
treatment. “My options were to go to Bendigo or Wodonga, here I was able to drop in early in the morning and be out in ten to fifteen minutes and back to work in Kyabram.” Lisa said. To coincide with International Women’s Day, GenesisCare has announced the availability of two innovative services for local breast cancer patients. Tattoo free radiation therapy and deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) for women with cancer in the left side. DIBH is a technique which reduces the effect of radiation on the heart which reduces the risk of long term cardiac complications. Dr Grace Ong, radiation oncologist at GenesisCare said, “The tattoo was to many women, a permanent, and often unwanted reminder, that they had been treated for cancer. IGRT overcomes that need.”

GOTAFE students are back to work FOR some 5,000 students across the several GOTAFE campuses, this last week marked their orientation week, a chance to get familiar with the layout of the campus and to be guided through some of the many intricacies that tend to go along with tertiary education. A number of service organisations from across Shepparton ranging from GMCU credit union, to Connect GV, GV Community Legal Centre, Centrelink and
dozens of others set up stands to provide basic information and advice to the incoming students. It was a chance for them to get to know life at a level that offers more individual independence they may have been used to date. Some of the returning hospitality students were on hand to prepare a multicultural lunch for the incoming students. S heppa r ton G OTA F E h a s a l mo s t
two thirds of the new students starting a new course. Director of Student Success, Dr Nicky van der Bergh was on hand to welcome the new students and have some past students provide some insight into some of the things they might expect over the next couple of years.
HW Greenham & Sons donate $250,000 towards fire recovery The recent fires have had a devastating effect on the Victorian countryside and many farmers have incurred substantial losses to fodder supplies and farm infrastructure. L o c a l To n g a l a pro c e s s or, H W Greenham and Sons have seen many of their suppliers face huge losses and saw fit to make a sizable donation of $250,000 that is to go towards their recovery. Managing director, Peter Greenham Junior said, “We were inundated with enquiries from beef producers and our overseas customers as to how they could assist affected farmers. It has been incredible to know they care and we have seen generous donations come into our
campaign.” The funds will be distributed through the Victorian Farmers Federation and go towards providing fodder and in replacing destroyed infrastructure such as fencing and in the replanting of shelter trees. Ag students looking towards the future AGR ICU LT U R E is changing and many young students from all walks of life are taking on the lifestyle as a professional vocation. Around 30 year 11 students from Assumption College in Kilmore, spent a day at Melbourne University, Dookie Campus, to learn from expert scientists at the university, some of the latest innovations that are taking place. Some of the latest developments in agriculture include recent technology that is being used to detect water stress in crops by using drone technology. Other advances include microwave adaptation that is being used to kill weeds and then there are robotics
being utilised to automate milking and monitor cow health. According to Assumption College teacher, Frank Pereira, the purpose of the tour was to allow the students to look at agriculture from a different perspective. At the school they have a garden plot as well as a number of animals that form part of their learning. Around 30 percent of the students doing the agriculture subject come from a farming background, for the rest this is their introduction. While he feels many will take up a farming future, some 5 percent will go on to tertiary level training.

GOULBURN Valley Health (GV Health) is prepared in case the Coronavirus (COVID19) spreads to the Goulburn Valley region and has a number of key messages to help the community protect against infection. Two students from Shepparton on an international school exchange program were being investigated for possible Coronavirus infection. Health officials have since cleared them. On the advice of the Department of Health and Human Services, these students had self-isolated in the care of one of their teachers. “All of us can play our part in containing the spread of this virus by doing a couple of simple things. “You should pay close attention to good hand hygiene. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. “Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or cough into your elbow. Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands with soap and water afterwards. “If you have travelled to (including transit through) a country considered to pose a risk of transmission in the 14 days before onset of illness or if you have had close or casual contact in the 14 days before illness
onset with a confirmed case of COVID-19 we recommend you call the Coronavirus hotline,” Dr Elcock added. Countries that are at higher risk include mainland China (excludes Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), Iran, Italy and South Korea. Countries deemed as moderate risk are Cambodia, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The most common symptoms of COVID19 include: • Fever • Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness • Cough • Sore throat • Fatigue or tiredness Dr Elcock said that it is not necessary for anyone to wear face masks if they are well.” “It is also important that if you feel unwell with any of the listed symptoms that you call the Coronavirus hotline which is serviced by Nurse-On-Call on 1800 675 398 and keep Triple Zero (000) calls for emergencies only. “In the case you need to come to the Emergency Department please call ahead on 5832 2322 so we can meet you in the car park with a face mask before entering the health service,” Dr Elcock said.

Dedicated airport rail link only option for Shepparton THE leader of the Victorian National Party, Peter Walsh was in Shepparton on Friday, along with the Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan and the CEO of the Committee for Greater Shepparton, Sam Birrell, to put forward a case to the Victorian Government on the rail link to Melbourne. The Victorian Government has proposed that the link between Sunshine and Southern Cross Station, should blend in with the suburban network, as it currently does while Steph Ryan contends that passengers in the future from Shepparton will be at a disadvantage through delays caused by joining the suburban network. Nationals Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum said the Shepparton community deserved a rail connection that would meet future demand. “We need a fast, reliable rail connection to make sure Shepparton doesn’t miss out
on the benefits of Victoria’s growing population,” Mr Drum said. “We will only have one opportunity to get the airport rail link right,” Ms Ryan said. “Using existing track won’t realise this. Only a dedicated tunnel between Sunshine and the Melbourne CBD will get us where we need to be, when we need to be there.” Sam Birrell said, “We should look to the German experience with rail.” Unlike Victoria’s rail network that operates on a spoke and hub arrangement with Melbourne at the hub, Germany has since the inception of rail, been developed on a cellular network, interlinking cities across the country. Ms Ryan said using existing tracks was short-sighted and would make it harder for country Victorians to get to appointments and meetings in the city.
Lovell calls for traffic lights at busy Numurkah Rd and Graham St intersection The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell has expressed concern about safety at the Numurkah Rd & Graham Street intersection and has called for the installation of traffic lights at the busy intersection. Directing a constituency question to the Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC, Jaala Pulford in State Parliament this week, Ms Lovell pointed out that the T intersection is only controlled by a give way sign for west-bound traffic in Graham St. With Numurkah Road a part of the GV Highway and Graham St being the location of GV Health, this intersection carries a large volume of traffic each day. During her contribution, Ms Lovell said the completion of Stage 1 of GV Health will see even larger traffic flows through the intersection in the future, with an expected increase in visitations at the hospital. “The Numurkah Road – Graham St intersection sees a high level of traffic each day and this is only going to increase with the expected additional workforce, patients and visitors utilising the new hospital facilities in the future,” said Ms Lovell. Ms Lovell sought a commitment from Ms Pulford to fund the installation of traffic lights at the intersection to improve safety and access to the hospital.

The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee invites residents to celebrate International Women’s Day at a free event on Thursday 12 March 2020 at The McIntosh Centre. The global theme for International Women’s Day in 2020 is #EachforEqual. Local speaker Leanne Rovers is a local farmer from Invergordon who is highly involved in her community and instrumental in coordinating many ‘hay runs’ to suppor t farming communities.
REIV concern on new pet legislation The Real Estate Institute of Victoria believes that the introduction of ‘pet legislation’ will result in widespread confusion, long delays at VCAT and an increase in surrendered and abandoned animals. There will be a requirement that if a tenant seeks to have a pet, and the landlord does not want a pet there, the landlord will have to make an application to VCAT within 14 days. In the absence of an application, the landlord is deemed to have provided consent. REIV has confirmed that VCAT will, as part of its deliberations as to reasonableness, consider the relevant local government’s ‘as of right’ animal allowance The REIV is calling on the Andrews’ Government to delay the already announced 2nd of March introduction of these new provisions until these issues are resolved.
Lovell and Sheed back continued funding for local fruit fly program The Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell and Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed have both lauded the work of the Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Program to protect the region’s fruit produce from Queensland fruit fly infestation, calling for continued funding from the State Government to ensure the future of the program. Ms Lovell sought a commitment from Agriculture Minister, Jaclyn Symes to provide ongoing funding to the program post June 2020

that will allow the GMV Regional Fruit Fly Group to continue their very important work in protecting our precious fruit produce. The exhibition features twenty-two narrators representing a range of nationalities and ethnicities including those from Iran, Iraqi, Syria, and others who are Rohingya (Myanmar), Zaghawa (Sudan), Hazara (Afghanistan) and Tamil. They Cannot Take the Sky will be launched at the Shepparton Library at 5pm on Monday 16th March, and will run until Friday 15 May 2020.

Don’t run over the blokes in the tinny! By Karin Lukin “Just 5 minutes,” he said. “You’ll need to take the helm.” My role changed from convalescent in need of relax and recuperation, to deckhand and surrogate captain. Easier said than done. I balked. But the captain needed a P-stop. “Steering a boat is as easy as steering a car,” he coaxed. “Control it by pivoting the wheel. Find the centre, go all the way to one side and then two and half turns to the other.” I gripped the wheel. “‘Do I go quarter to or half past?” “What the f...does that mean? I don’t think of it that way. From port to starboard.” “Oh,” I was decidedly dubious. My reluctant, “Ok but I’m trying to get a system,” ignored as his need became dire. “You’ll be fine,” with another casual parting shot, “Don’t run over the guys in the tinny!” Clinging even more tightly to the wheel I looked up aghast. In the channel in front blissfully as yet unaware of impending doom were indeed four guys in a tinny, each with a tinny, their lines trailing casually overboard. Their tinny rode low in the water, gunwale nearly awash. Surely they were overloaded? They’d been out for a peaceful afternoon

trawl, until now. We were bearing down on them at a faster rate of knots than I liked, with me at the helm. Throttling back I searched desperately for a horn! Ever so slowly, realisation dawned. They froze, mouths agape. Now aghast in their own turn, they watched me zigzagging towards them. T hey watched me. Watching them. Industriously and frantically working the wheel from right to left. Port to starboard. Same as a car, or otherwise. What were they going to catch on this peaceful afternoon? No doubt they were going to catch a Red River Houseboat! The bow of the boat yawed right, then left. They disappeared from view. We sailed past with an inch to spare into calmer waters and around the bend. Calmer waters my foot! A white glossy speed boat, the latest in luxury, trailing a skier roared down on us. He was not quite flat out, but not the mandated 4 knots. With a roar and casual wave, he disappeared behind and around the bend. Wonder what his wake did to the blokes in the tinny? I relinquished the helm with a great sigh of relief. I held no desire to captain for any longer.

Here’s how you can win a share in $30,000 ENTERING the 2020 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway is incredibly easy, it almost sounds too good to be true. An integrated and passionate team of urban planners, landscape architects, surveyors, engineers and visual media professionals, Spiire works with commercial clients, councils and governments to create living environments with people and livability at the forefront. anything from the planning for a residential development to an experimental roadside dining pod in the CBD. The company has recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary of operations in Shepparton. With more than 30 members in the team, a significant number of them have been on board for more than fifteen years. In 2016, the business was awarded Urban Development Institute of Australia’s ‘Consultants of the Year’ award for their
work on the Boulevard Estate project, a 70 acre residential development. On the hunt for great players For over 120 years, the Alexandra Football and Netball Club has been a well-established family friendly club and are now looking for expressions of interest for their senior football and netball sides. Part of the AFL Outer East Football Netball League, Division Two, their goal is to build on their club culture both on and off the field. The club has won the most disciplined club in the league multiple times and they regard this as an integral part of their culture. Recruitment coach, Steven Hedger said, “We are building our team with many junior players developing through the ranks and we would like to see new players that will mentor and nurture on and off the field.
