New $2M project gets underway For the past 64 years, ConnectGV has been working out of a set of buildings that they have now outgrown. Having been g ranted $2M from the Federal Government through the Community Development Grants along with $3.3M raised by the organisation, they are able to commit to the construction of a new building. That finished at the end of January. It was during this period that the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry undertook a survey that showed overwhelmingly, that both traders and shoppers were in favour of it continuing.

Not to let an opportunity pass, one trader, Choice Group, whose office is in High Street, has taken to the streets decked in bright fluoro tops and have been giving visitors a free parking ticket, reminiscent of the meter maids that offered a similar service for visitors to the Gold Coast.

to cover will be around 3km and will take about 45 minutes. Walkers should wear comfortable walking shoes and have a water bottle and a snack as well as a hat and lashings of sunscreen. Farmers urged to attend town hall meeting on water M U R R AY Darling Basin Plan (MDBP), Inspector General, Mick Keelt y is holding a tow n hall meeting in Shepparton on Thursday, February 27 at the Shepparton RSL. The Southern Riverina Irrigators are calling farmers and community members in the Goulburn Valley and Northern Victoria need to take their future into their own hands. “We cannot rely on state and federal farming organisations, or governments, who have let down Southern Basin farmers,” said irrigation advocate, Chris Brooks. Mr Brooks is encouraging members of the Goulburn Valley and Northern Victoria irrigation communities to attend the meeting. M ick Keelt y is investigating compliance issues and water sharing arrangements of the M DBP on behalf of the Federal Government. Following Mr Keelty’s meeting Mr Brooks, who is the chairman of Southern Riverina Irrigators, will address those in attendance. IN Australia, around nine out of ten young people (12-17 years) are not meeting the Australian physical activity guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity every day. To help get young people and women active, Surfing Victoria have teamed up with VicHealth to help thousands of women from around the state to get active through the Women’s Stand Up Paddleboarding program. Running in Kialla Lakes on the 10th and 11th of March, the program encourages teens and women to be active in more ways than just traditional sports.
VicHealth CEO, Dr Sandro Demaio said, “This is an exciting program that encourages young women to get more active in the water, learn a fun new skill, and socialise.” Session will run for an hour and are delivered by fully accredited Women’s Stand Up Paddleboarding coaches. Council masterplan for Mooroopna WHILE McLennan Street in Mooroopna has the bearing of a stately old country town, it is in need of a makeover and touch up in spots. The Greater Shepparton City Council has advised that a number of projects included in the Mooroopna McL ennan Street Masterplan have commenced construction with others scheduled to begin in the near future.
Council developed a masterplan for streetscape and infrastructure works in consultation with the Mooroopna community, for the area between Ferrari Park and the War Memorial Gardens along McLennan Street. Work on the Mooroopna War Memorial has begun with new concrete paths and walkways to the rotunda, along with a raised platform. It will also include the
installation of new memorial walls and new flag poles. Stage 1 of this project, costing approximately $300,000, has been jointly funded by Greater Shepparton City Council, Mooroopna Rotary Club, Victorian State G overnment, Sheppar ton R SL and a number of private donors. Landscaping of blocks one and two, located near Echuca Road on McLennan Street, and block six on McLennan Street to the west of O’Brien Street, will begin in the coming weeks. Refurbishment of the Water Tower
Gardens public toilets are due to commence in the coming weeks. Greater Shepparton City Council director infrastructure, Phil Hoare, said “We hope to have the War Memorial works completed in time for ANZAC Day 2020. Local politicians call on government to fund local programs I N m a k i ng a c as e for t he S t ate Government to fully fund some of the major infrastructure programs planned for Sheppa r ton, both the Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell and Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed are in agreement. Both say that the government is falling behind in its budgeting priorities. A case in point is the construction of the $120 million Greater Shepparton Secondary College which the State Government has promised will be fully completed and operational by January 2022. In her contribution, Ms Lovell reiterated the need for the $120 million to be delivered in the budget for this timeline to be met and the project not to be a staged build. to finalise the business case for the longawaited Shepparton Bypass Stage One. Ms Sheed said, “For a region that has one of the highest instances of freight use in the state the lack of a bypass is doing economic damage to my electorate. In the last Federal Government budget a commitment of over $200 million was made to completing the project, an amount that is presumably still available if the Victorian Government would commit to the project.” At the same time, Ms Lovell called on the government to also follow through on a number of commitments including, Stage Two of GV Health and the Shepparton Rail Corridor as well as funding the redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports & Events Centre. Life members honoured in new aged care redevelopment LONG-TIME supporters of Shepparton Retirement Villages, Barry Campbell and Santo Varapodio OAM will have wings at the new $20 million Mooroopna Place development named in their honour. The newly refurbished and re-built residential aged care facility at Rodney Park Village will house 100 beds; 40 of those will be in the brand new building at the front of the development, while the other 60 at the rear of the building have been totally gutted and refurbished. Estimated to be completed by the end of 2020, the wings to be named Varapodio Way and Campbell Court will be joined by an open plan reception, wellness centre and administration hub. Both Mr Varapodio and Mr Campbell were instrumental in

the planning and fundraising for the original facilities at Rodney Park, and passionate about the community’s vision for aged care in Mooroopna. Both are life members of Shepparton Retirement Villages and Mr Campbell is a past president of the Board of Management. Shepparton Retirement Villages recently hosted a tour of the building works for the pair who were amazed at the progress and delighted with the honour bestowed upon them by the Board of Management. Mr Campbell also had the honour of turning the sod on the development last year.

Council continues support for Seniors Festival in 2020 For the past 38 years, the Shepparton Seniors Festival has been celebrating the contributions older people have made with the community of Greater Shepparton. Greater Shepparton City Council have provided support to the festival over the years and at the most recent February

ordinar y council meeting, agreed to continue providing support with a grant totalling $5000 with each application limited to $500. In 2019, the Seniors Festival was held throughout the month of October, with 1900 people attending 32 events in the region.
People aged 60+ total as much as 23.4 percent of Greater Shepparton population, according to 2016 census data. Council’s support for the festival also includes running council funded events and co-ordination of the program.

Footy club offers support to other league THE folks around those towns in the Upper Murray are doing it tough following the summer bushfires in their region. Through the kinship of football, a club in another league is putting on a fundraiser to help them get through hard times. The Violet Town Football / Netball Club are inviting everyone to come along to their ground for a fundraiser for the Upper Murray Football/Netball League. This will support the towns/clubs in this region who have suffered through the disastrous fires. The fundraiser is on Friday, February 28 at the Violet Town Football/ Netball Club starting at 5.30pm The event coincides with the AFL State of O rigin clash which will be screened on their giant 150” projector screen in the clubhouse as well as live music (open mic) being performed out on the ground for those who aren’t sport minded. Entry to the BBQ is with a gold coin and the tins will be rattling to help raise funds.
Get down and dirty THIS Saturday, February 29 will see people of all ages having fun in the mud for the annual Mad Cow Mud Run. Beginning at Shepparton’s KidsTown, both kids and adults will run through a course of obstacles, and crawl through mud for a fun day out and all for a great cause. The event is hosted by Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, an organisation created to raise awareness and inspire discussion around organ and tissue donations. The adults will kick off the day from 7:30am for a 6km or 12km course and the kids will get a chance to get dirty at 2:15pm for a 3km course. Limited tickets are available. High profile former football players are kicking for cancer

HIGH profile sports agent, Ricky Nixon is the voice behind Kicking for Cancer, a relatively new organisation that aims to raise funds to grant wishes to kids with cancer. To that end, Ricky came up with the idea of a football game featuring cancer victims who had recovered and were an inspiration to society along with a host of ex-AFL stars. Helping to focus attention on the game, ten year old, Charlotte Morrow from Rosebud who is now recovering from stage-four brain cancer came along to
the Rumbalara football ground with her family to join in the promotion. The game will be between a country team and a city team on Saturday, March 14 at the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in Shepparton. Following the game, an AFL Legends Dinner at the Terminus Hotel will be held with former stars Sam Newman, Des Tuddenham, Peter Bedford, Warwick Capper and others in attendance. SPEAK UP ON WATER Dear Editor, Although I am not a food producer at the mercy of poor water policy decisions, I cannot stand by and watch communities across northern Victoria and southern NSW continue to suffer from ill informed policy makers. Next week the interim Inspector General will be in Shepparton to hear our views on how our communities could fair better in what seems to be a total injustice in how water is managed in the Murray Darling Basin. Quality time with my family is spent on the banks of the Murray River and I can no longer watch as the banks are destroyed by volumes which are higher for longer than I can recall. While it is disappointing that the states did not see the value at investigating opportunities to lessen the pressure on our iconic part of the Murray River I still urge everyone who wants a future in our wonderful rural communities to attend the Town Hall meeting in Shepparton on Thursday 27th February at the Shepparton RSL at 10am. While I personally can’t provide technical information on the options to improve the dire situation, I can be there to send Government a strong message that time has run out for them to act and Fix The Basin Plan. INSPECTOR GENERAL IN SHEPPARTON Dear Editor, I have attended more water meetings than I care to remember. There is no question that water is the most important ingredient for communities across northern Victoria. As such I have been actively involved in the Speak Up Campaign activities to highlight the impacts to communities and the environment across the southern basin and I am a Victorian representative on their committee. Credit must be given to the advocacy from our NSW cousins, not just Speak Up, but the other organisations across the river who have worked tirelessly to highlight the failings in the Basin Plan and the inequity in water sharing that has lead to the recent reliance on the Murray to deliver all the water to South Australia, who never seem to have a drought. It is now Victoria’s turn to lift the ante and unite with southern NSW to deliver a better deal for all those across the southern connected system. It must begin next Thursday 27th February when the Murray-Darling Basin Inspector General Mick Keelty arrives in Shepparton at the RSL at 10am. Victoria must put any insecurities aside and realise that the potential to lift the lid on the political influence of the Northern Basin and the failure to accept historical evidence by South Australia have lead both sides of the river in this region to suffer.
