From February 1, the Council’s car parks in the CDB reverted to paid parking and penalties will apply if you don’t pay. By Steve Hutcheson WITH changes to the way the Country Fire Authority (CFA) operates in Shepparton, transitioning from a largely volunteer organisation to one that currently has ten full-time members. It is expected in time, to grow to 14 full time members and with over 30 volunteers, the brigade has outgrown their existing station in Maude Street.
The site of the new station will be in Archer Street behind Shepparton Shopping Plaza complex where access of fire vehicles will pose less of a safety risk to pedestrian traffic walking past, it offers a lot more space to accommodate a larger team of permanent firefighters as well as providing facilities that adequately serve the needs of a modern fire brigade including bigger training facilities. Billy Baxter met Ash Barty For a young boy who plays tennis with the Nathalia Hot Shots, getting the opportunity to go to Melbourne to see the Australian Open was especially exciting for young eight year old, Billy Baxter. Ten kids from Nathalia were invited by the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots team to join them at the Open where they watched some of the men playing in a doubles match. Kids from several country towns were invited to practise their hot shots on the Rod Laver court between games as the audiences were moving into their seats. Young Billy Baxter was called aside to meet reigning Australian champion and ranked number one in the world, Ash Barty who was about to start a game with number 26 ranked Russian player, Elena Rybakina. Billy was asked to flip a coin for the two girls to start their game. “I was allowed to keep the coin,” said Billy. The ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program is

tennis for kids, designed to help them enjoy the game, no matter their age or ability. Hot Shots is played on smaller courts with modified equipment, including lighter racquets, lower nets and low compression balls that don’t bounce too high.
There is no doubt, getting to see the world’s best female player will be a strong incentive for young Billy to practise his game and perhaps one day, get to play a game on the Rod Laver court himself.

Million dollar boost to Shepparton’s economy GREATER Shepparton opened its doors to BMX riders from around the world to compete in 2020 Union Cyclist Internationale BMX Supercross World Cup. The BMX track at Shepparton Sport City Precinct is considered by the competitors to be a top international track, saw 197 riders from 26 countries compete in heats over two days. Australian riders Anthony Dean, Izaac Kennedy and Saya Sakakibara all placed on Saturday’s round one as well as an impressive feat from Alise Willoughby from the USA who came first on both days. With more than 3,000 spectators, it is estimated that more than half of the attendance travelled from interstate and internationally for the world class event. Greater Shepparton City Council mayor, Seema Abdullah said, “This events’ success is a testament to Greater Shepparton’s state-
of-the-art facilities reinforcing the tourism industry. “The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was an exciting opportunity to showcase all Greater Shepparton has to offer, including our world class BMX track as well as our accommodation, restaurants, eating establishments and locallyowned businesses.” This next weekend will see rounds three and four of the World Cup series take place in Bathurst. Lemnos General Store has new owners Situated on the outskirts of Shepparton, the little rural hamlet of Lemnos is home to around 250 people has new owners taking over the small general store and distribution point for The Adviser newspaper. Sheena Dryden and her husband are
the new owners while Rachel Beaty helps Sheena in the day to day running. As it is with many small hamlets, the general store is the cornerstone of the town and the Lemnos store is no different providing anything from grocery items to hot and cold food.

Last Thursday, January 30, Greater Shepparton City Council’s Activities in the Park hosted Teepee Time at the Family Haven Mooroopna. The event provided small, fun activities inside teepees for children and parents to participate in. The Family Haven runs through the Lighthouse Project and provides a safe space during the day where parents/carers and their children are welcomed with no

SPC supports scholarships at GOTAFE APPLICATIONS for SPC GOTAFE scholarships are now open for two mechanical apprentices for 2020 along with a number of scholarships for other engineering courses. FOLLOWING the closure notice for the Murchison DP Jones Nursing Home and neighbourhood house last November, the local community was buoyed by an eleventh hour reprieve following representations by Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack to the parliament. This last week, they have learned that the administrators have forced the closure within the next two weeks. Local State Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan said, “I am deeply disappointed by how this process has been handled. Damian Drum has been doing a power of work behind the scenes, but we need the liquidators and the State and Federal Governments to pull their weight. “I am gobsmacked that three expressions of interest were received, yet none of the interested parties were even contacted by either the liquidators or the federal department.” Damian Drum said, “The future of DP Jones Nursing Home is not something I wish to comment on at present, as I continue to fight for its future behind closed doors. I care passionately about this issue and along with the community I want to see the best resolution achieved for Murchison.” The 40 bed, not-for-profit aged care home will now repatriate all of its residents to other aged care homes around the district while the town considers the forthcoming loss of around 70 jobs as well as their neighbourhood house, medical centre and pharmacy.

New national body recommended for the Australian dairy industry In its report published today on options for reform of dairy industry structures, the Joint Transition Team (JTT) of the Australian Dairy Plan has recommended the creation of a single, new whole of industry national dairy organisation.
The proposed national body (referred to as ‘NewCo B’ in the JTT’s report) would see the current range of national and regional dairy organisations brought together as a one stop shop for all industry services including policy, advocacy, research and development and
marketing for dairy businesses across the entire supply chain. It would operate through one national brand and a network of regional offices providing tailored local services. The proposed new organisation would be member owned and overseen by a skillsbased Board. Farmers would contribute a single levy payment for all services (the current Dairy Service Levy) and processing companies would also provide funding. Eligible expenditure on research and development would continue to attract matched funding from the Commonwealth Government. JTT chairperson and dairy farmer, Shirley Harlock said, “Our report recommends the creation of a dynamic new national organisation
to provide leadership and services for the Australian dairy industry. Mrs Harlock said the operating environment for the dairy industry has changed dramatically over the past two decades. The JTT was formed as part of the Australian Dairy Plan, in response to overwhelming feedback from across the dairy industry about the need for transformational change to industry structures and advocacy arrangements. Feedback on options for reform of industry structure contained in the JTT report can be provided via dairy industry member organisations or directly by email to contact@ dairyplan.com.au. AS the fires that ravaged Victoria over the last month are finally looking to be under control, the next stage is just as difficult as residents return to their towns to begin rebuilding their community and possibly even their homes. This award was for gym, socialising and community engagement, a long form of saying she is never at home. “I have places to be, people to see,” said Lesley with a smile. “These awards are a small token but it is important that people have something to work towards,” said independent living coordinator, Debra Russell. Shepparton to get a new fire station continued from front page T H E recent bushfires brings home the important job the CFA does in the community and Shepparton with a rising population has a greater need for essential services to be expanded and improved upon.
Despite calls for the CFA to be fully funded by the State Government, the new station still has a demand for volunteers to help raise money for additional equipment. To date they have contributed some $85,000 towards the improved facilities of the new station. The building works are being done by
Shepparton project managing firm, Crow Constructions. Crow Construction has a long time reputation for relying upon local subcontractors and suppliers which augurs well for the Shepparton economy with a $12M estimate for the construction.

Chamber president, John Anderson has quietly expressed his confidence that the complimentary parking will be extended. The Chamber is advocating that period should be at least until this time next year. Taking into account the comments on the council’s Facebook posts, there is a lot of public support for the free parking. It remains to be seen if council take heed. While there is some concern about the loss of revenue from parking fees, the council issued this statement last November. In the 2018-19 financial year Council raised $1,187,547. The amount recovered in parking fines over the 2018-19 financial year was $1,283,194. Surplus funds from the parking stream fund the gap to provide the School Crossing Supervisor program. Celebrating Victoria’s vibrant multiculturalism in 2020 Round one of the Multicultural Festivals and Events Program is now open and the State Government is encouraging organisations to apply for funding for events held between 1 July 2020 and 31 December 2020. Small grants up to $2,000 (community stream) and large grants between $7,000 and $70,000 (partnerships stream) are available. An information session about the program will be held from 12.30pm-2.30pm on Tuesday 11 February at the Shepparton Library, 41-42 Marungi Street, Shepparton. Attendees will have the opportunity to get informed about the program, answer questions with grants experts from the Multicultural Affairs division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet and access assistance with their application, including grant writing tips and skills. Valentine’s Day
around the globe The day of love is celebrated widely around the whole world, and though the concept of the day is the same, Valentine’s Day is celebrated differently in many countries across the globe.
Germany It is believed that the people of Germany are generally unromantic, however, not when it comes to Valentine’s Day. The colour red will be seen all around the country with the arrival of the day as red is considered a symbol of love and passion. Like many other countries, presenting their loved ones with a bouquet of roses is a popular custom for Germans.
France People in France once followed a peculiar Valentine’s Day custom called ‘drawing for’. Unmarried young and old people would go into houses facing each other and begin calling out across from one window to another
and pair off with their chosen partner. If the young man failed to be particularly enthralled with his Valentine, he would desert her. A bonfire would be lit later where ladies would burn images of their ungrateful lovers and hurl abuses at them. The ritual was eventually abandoned as it left much room for nastiness and ridicule.
China The celebrations of Chinese Valentine’s Day or Qi Qiao Jie are quite different from usual Valentine’s Day celebrations we see in the rest of the world. There are specific and colourful rituals for the day besides the usual exchange of flowers, cards and chocolates as tokens of love between lovers. Following the tradition, lovers visit the Temple of Matchmaker on the Chinese Valentine’s Day and pray for their love and happiness and their possible marriage. Singles also visit the temple on the day and ask for their luck in love.

The best fudgy brownies for your Valentine (or yourself) Ingredients: n 226g butter n 170g brown sugar n 170g white sugar
n 1/4 tsp salt n 1 tsp vanilla n 1 tsp coffee extract (optional)
Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line an 8 x 8 inch square pan with baking paper. To make it easier to remove the brownies later, have an overhang of paper over the edges of the baking pan. 2. Place the butter in a bowl and microwave to completely melt the butter. 3. Add the brown sugar, white sugar and salt while the butter is still warm. Mix to combine until you have a smooth paste. 4. Add the vanilla, coffee extract (if using), eggs and egg yolk to the butter-sugar mix. Using a hand mixer, whisk the mix on medium speed, until the batter becomes pale in colour (about 2 minutes). 5. In a separate bowl, sift the flour and cocoa powder together. 6. Add the flour-cocoa mix into

n 85g cocoa powder n 85g plain flour
the wet and mix it in until just combined. DO NOT OVER-MIX. Add about 2/3 of the chopped chocolate halfway through the mixing in of the flour. 7. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle the rest of the chocolate on top. 8. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (30 minutes for extra fudgy or 40 minutes for less fudgy). 9. Remove from the oven and let it cool down to room temperature. Remove the brownies from the pan and let them chill in the fridge for a couple of hours (chilled brownies are easier to cut). 10. Cut the brownies into 16 pieces and enjoy!

The history of Valentine’s Day and flowers The history of Valentine’s Day has several different stories from many different religions and countries, so it’s hard to say exactly how or when it began. One legend says it originated during the third century in Rome. During this time, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers, so he outlawed marriage for young men. A young priest named Valentine was furious with this injustice and defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Claudius eventually discovered Valentine’s actions and sentenced him to death. During his time in jail, Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter, who visited him in prison. Before he was put to death, Valentine sent a letter to her and signed it, “From Your Valentine”. Valentine was executed on February
14, 270 AD. Later, around 496 AD, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 a day to honour Valentine, who by that time had become a saint. For centuries, flowers have symbolized fertility, love, marriage, and romance. According to some sources, the history of giving your loved one Valentine’s Day flowers comes from the old-fashioned custom of sending floral bouquets to pass on non-verbal messages. Introduced in the 18th century by Charles II of Sweden, each flower had a specific meaning attached to it, making it possible to have an entire conversation using only flowers. Now, people continue to send flowers on special occasions or to express sentiments of love and admiration.

The bug hits the windscreen at the motor museum POSSIBLY one of the most recognisable car shapes in the world would be the Volkswagen Beetle. In 1973, it surpassed the Model T Ford as the most produced single make of car in the world, now with over 21 million vehicles. This 1960 model owned by Ian Bryant and now on show at the Shepparton Motor Museum, was one of the last 36HP engines produced. It’s first owner had it for more than 41 years before passing over to her grand-daughter and has been painstakingly restored over the past five years. Fitted with twin strombergs in the restoration process, it should now produce almost 48HP.

AUSTRALIA has a number of iconic sporting events that take place in Victoria each year. The AFL Grand Final, the Melbourne Cup and the Sun Tour as it was originally known, now the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. For six young men from the US and one from Canada, all under 23 and currently taking a sabbatical away from their studies and the cold northern hemisphere weather, it offers them the chance to compete against some of the best cyclists in the world. The race is conducted over five stages covering 627km going from the flat country around the Goulburn Valley to a stage that will see them ascend the heights of Mt Buller in a gruelling exercise of endurance. The finish line in Welsford Street promises to be a hive of excitement as the peloton races down the home straight along the Causeway to finish there. Greater Shepparton City Council have been working overtime to put the town on the international map with the BMX championships over the weekend and now the Jayco Herald Sun Tour within the same timeframe.
Young runner challenging the best in Australia STARTING out from the blocks in Cobram, local athlete Nathan Stoate represented extremely well in the 2020 Victorian ‘Steigen’ Country Track and Field Championships on January 25. Nathan who moved to Geelong last year to increase his exposure to the running community, has represented the Goulburn Valley well having come fifth in the open men’s 5,000m race with a time of 15:21.23, running against some well seasoned athletes such as Julian Spense. Two days after running the 5,000m, Nathan then competed in the 10,000m race on the same track, running second place
in the men’s open category with a time of 31:53.55. “I was extremely happy with the race and my new personal best.” Nathan said. 2019 was a big year for Nathan having made his mark with impressive times of 71:40 min for half marathon and 2:46:11 for his first full marathon being only 19 years old. WITH Shepparton’s new ‘super school’ now a reality, sporting clubs have had to change and evolve alongside the school. Wanganui Netball Club has now changed their name and branched out to create the Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) Netball Club.
They invite both students of GSSC and those who don’t attend to play on one of their teams, with a registration night to kick off the season on Monday 10th and Wednesday, February 12 at 6:30pm at the Shepparton Netball Association (SNA) clubrooms, Brauman Street, Shepparton. There are also plenty of positions to fill like coaches, team
