PRIDE OF PLACE IN ONE MAN’S VISION Looking towards the future, almost twenty years ago, Peter Copulos visualised a shopping complex located in the Kialla area.
Finding the right site was the first challenge and with the support of the Greater Shepparton City Council in bringing about the rezoning that fell in line with the Shepparton 2030 master plan was a great asset. Ron Popelier of PopDesign was engaged to bring the project vision to fruition. It took ten years from the time the land was acquired until the process of construction began. The construction team led by Graham Marshall of GL & DC Marshall and the many tradesmen and suppliers, Mawsons Concrete, FJ Wrought Iron, Watters Electrical, Mick Warnett Plumbing, Nucon, John Morrow Refrigeration, GV Plaster,

Fipro, JR & JD Baldi Concreting, Latrina Tiles, Mid Murray Fire Service, CKH Painting and Andrew Beks Landscaping all worked very hard to bring the final building to successful completion. But that was just the beginning. In the time since those early beginnings, Riverside Plaza, with the support of the community and the traders, have all been the key to the successful position that Riverside Plaza now finds itself after ten years. The future offers a range of new and exciting challenges that will support the growing residential development in the region south of Shepparton with a continued pursuit of excellence to remain the premier shopping location in the region.

There is plenty going on around them but still, a couple of blokes with time to relax are taking advantage of the atmosphere that surrounds them while talking about things that interest them over a mug of coffee at Riverside Plaza. Brian Emmett and Ted Bartlett, both long since retired have seen a lot of change take place over the years and Riverside Plaza is included in that panoply of development. “It’s a nice place for a cup of coffee,” said Ted. His mate, Brian agreed. “We’re both getting on so like to take it easy.” Riverside Plaza prides itself on providing a relaxing atmosphere where patrons can sit back and not be hurried. Brian and Ted are taking advantage of the sentiment.

By Steve Hutcheson THIS past Monday hundreds of irate rural people joined the ‘Convoy to Canberra’ to protest the lack of action by the State and Federal Governments regarding the catastrophe that the Murray Darling Basin Plan has imposed on regional communities. Local independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed joined the convoy to provide support to the protest. “It is a sign of how desperate these hard-working people are that they feel the need to take their grievances directly to Canberra,” Ms Sheed said. Overcoming disability to live life In celebrating International Day of People with Disability, each year Shepparton Access bring together community partners for a breakfast meeting. This year, Brooke Parsons, a young woman who had her first stroke at the age of 13, a consequence of living with mitral heart prolapse, polycystic ovarian syndrome and hyperglycemia, was the guest speaker. Having the stroke changed her life and her aspirations and her life goals. It has been Brooke’s determination and perseverance which has enabled her to overcome her disabilities, gain employment and co-found the Young Victorian Stroke Group. Fundraiser amasses $8,000 for GV Health Kids Ward THERE is something to be said about a group of young people, themselves under various forms of pressure in life, step outside of their own difficulties to assist in creating a solution for others. So it is with some of the young residents at Shepparton’s Education First Youth Foyer putting on a fundraiser for the GV Health children’s ward raising $8,000 in the process. Foyer youth development officer, Ruben Moreno said, “ The kids did all the work, the performing, the front of house and back of house as well as working with the caterers and even the emceeing.”
The acting child and adolescent unit manager, Paula Holland said, “These funds will be used to make the new children’s wing that is now under construction, more comfortable for the kids coming in to hospital.” The Foyer has a core focus on education and provides secure housing when young people cannot live at home and provides them a means of enabling to focus on their studies. It also provides opportunities to develop career aspirations, gain work experience, and build a pathway to sustainable employment.

Pental Ltd appoint new chairman MAJOR Shepparton company, Pental Limited advises that their current chairman and director, Peter Robinson has advised that he intends to retire on 31 December 2019. Pental will appoint Mark Hardgrave as chairman following his retirement. Mark Hardgrave joined Pental in May 2019 when he was appointed as a non-executive director. Mark brings to the role of chairman, more than 35 years’ experience in corporate finance. Mr Robinson said, “After 17 years with the company, including ten years as chairman, I am stepping down from this wonderful Australian business known for its brands that get the job done and I am very pleased to be leaving the company in the healthy position it is in today. “I thank my fellow board members for their support over my tenure and to the whole of the Pental team for their hard work and dedication to the company over the years. I welcome Mark to the role of Pental’s new chairman. $34,000 to support Shepparton Foodshare SHEPPARTON Foodshare has received a very generous cash donation of $34,291.28 from Burke Britton Financial Partners. Burke Britton were approached to nominate their chosen charities to receive the annual donation offered so they asked their clients to put forward suggestions for worthy charities. Client and past Foodshare Co-ordinator, Ron Nicholls put Shepparton Foodshare forward and other clients nominated Foodshare to receive the sizeable portion of the total donation. Rod Schubert, Shepparton Foodshare Chair said, “we were both surprised and thrilled to receive the news of this significant donation that will cover around a quarter of our annual operating costs.” Shepparton Foodshare rescues and receives donations of
food to redistribute to those in ‘necessitous circumstances’ in the Goulburn Valley. Since established in 2012, Shepparton Foodshare has distributed more than 2.4 million kilos of food to people in need. To deliver this service, Foodshare partners with supermarkets, business and other food rescue agencies. Food is stored according to regulation guidelines to extend the shelf life of the donated/rescued food to then provide nutritious meals and prevent edible food entering the waste stream. AS part of this year’s 16 days of Activism against Gendered Violence campaign, Greater Shepparton Family Violence Prevention Network (GSFVPN) is leading a local campaign beginning on Sunday 25 November with multiple events to raise awareness of family violence across the municipality. 16 days of Activism against Gendered Violence is a global campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence, impact and drivers of gendered violence as well as celebrating the achievements and progress in working toward a society free of gender inequity. The theme of the Victorian campaign is ‘Respect #CallitOut’ with GSFVPN encouraging the local community to think about the role individuals and organisations can have in promoting gender equity. In 2017 Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) conducted its most recent National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women. The survey findings highlighted some positive trends in Australian attitudes to gender equity and the drivers of violence against women including: Australians are more likely to understand that violence against women involves more than just physical violence in 2017 than they were in 2013 and 2009 while most Australians support gender equality and are more likely to support gender equality in 2017 than they were in 2013 and 2009. All roads lead to Go Traffic
By Jessica Nicol BUSINESS is booming for one of Victoria’s largest traffic management companies, Go Traffic, thanks to a reputation for service excellence and safety – now they’re sharing the love with a bounty of employment opportunities. Go Traffic general manager, Stuart Wickens said they currently employ 300 staff, but the addition of a Powercor contract commencing December 1, is expected to add another 150 positions. Joining depots in Geelong, Colac, Ballarat, West Melbourne and Horsham, Go Traffic is setting up in Shepparton, Bendigo, Mildura and Echuca. “We’re going into four regions we’ve never really been before and are looking for around 60 new staff to help set up the depots there,” Mr Wickens said. “We’ve also got a bigger piece of the contract in the areas we currently work. For us it’s a huge increase in staff, and we’re really looking to get as many new people on board as we can before the contract commences.” Mr Wickens said Go Traffic prides themselves on supporting local communities through creating and nurturing local job opportunities. “We really want to get the message out that when we’re working in Bendigo, we want to give local people the chance to work in their community - we don’t just want to bring Geelong people in to do the job,” he said. “We work very closely with organisations liked GROW G21 (Geelong Regional Alliance) and other GROW organisations in Bendigo, Shepparton and Ballarat. “They help disadvantaged people get work and we’ve had a lot of success with these companies, getting people through the door who end up being really great candidates. It feels good that we’re helping the community.”

GOULBURN Valley Water’s (GVW) ‘Renewables Program’ is underway as of this week, with works to install solar panels commencing at the Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) in Shepparton. With 16 GVW sites on the program, customers may notice works to install both ground mounted and roof mounted panels at a number of GVW facilities across Shepparton over coming months. General manager planning & assets, Daniel Hughes said, “The panels are part of a large scale project to install over 4,800 high-efficiency solar PV panels on GVW land and infrastructure. “The Shepparton WMF is the first of a number of sites across the GVW region to have the panels installed, with works also scheduled for Tongala, Rushworth and Cobram in the most immediate early stages.” “T h is projec t is intended to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions, and operating costs associated with energy bills,” he said. It is expected that eventually the operation of these sites will be optimised such that they predominantly function in sunlight hours. RETIRED Yalca dairy farmer, Les Brown, now living in Shepparton and joined the convoy bus ride, expressed his disgust at the government for not taking notice of what is happening in the communities. “I have been a lifelong Country/National party voter but they are on notice if they don’t scrap the plan and bring in a sensible arrangement. They are more interested in keeping a frog alive than stud dairy cows. It is disgraceful.” he said. Suzanna Sheed said, “Let me make this clear – so-called water reform has turned water into a tradable commodity with a market that would not be tolerated in any other industry sector. It is largely unregulated and there is little to no regard for the health and wellbeing of communities across the basin.” Local transport company, Kreskas Bros sent six semi-trailers to join the convoy. Operations manager for Kreskas Bros, Adam Katsoutas, when asked why they joined the convoy said,”The rural industries around Shepparton rely on water and without it, there would be no town to speak of. Lots of industries rely on it as we rely on supporting those industries so it is important that we support finding a solution to the problem.” In an announcement on Friday November 29, the Victorian Government’s Minister for Water, Lisa Neville confirmed an interim regulation for tagged water use will begin on 12 December this year – subject to final regulatory approval. The government has also instigated an interim operating regime that aims to limit the volume of traded water that can be delivered from the Goulburn to the Murray system to 50 gigalitres a month, significantly below the maximum deliveries of traded water between the systems over summer in recent years. With hundreds of people taking the protest to Canberra in this convoy, the ball is now in the court of the Federal Government to listen to the voice of the people. As Les Brown said, “ The government is not listening and if they don’t, they are going to get scrapped.”

Associate professor, Annette Foley said students who received an offer from the university of their first choice should celebrate meeting the requirements. “For those students who don’t receive an ATAR they were expecting or wanting, it is important for them to know that they have options and that not all is lost,” associate professor Foley said. “This can be a time for students to recalibrate and think about what they want to do. My advice to these students is to relax, take a step back and assess their options. Start by doing some research around what is on offer. “Remember that you have your whole life ahead of you and there are many options, opportunities and pathways available to lead you to the career of your choice.” Students who receive an offer from Federation University

a Trobe University is reminding school leavers of its new Regional Benefits Program as many face decisions at Change of Preference time. The program rewards regional students with a minimum ATAR of 80 with a scholarship of $2,000 per year for the duration of their course when they study at one of La Trobe’s regional campuses – Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton or AlburyWodonga. This rises to $5,000 for regional students with an ATAR over 95. La Trobe will also offer these high-achievers a guaranteed place in the course of their choice running at any regional campus, subject to meeting course requirements. The program also gives students access to a range of exclusive opportunities including leadership development seminars, career support, and priority access to industry mentoring and work placements. The program complements other initiatives La Trobe already have in place to attract students from rural and regional areas, including the Aspire program, which recognises community excellence with an early conditional offer and study support. Dr Threlkeld said the Regional Benefits Program will help regional Victoria retain some of the state’s best and the brightest students – to study and then, eventually, to work. “With rural workforce shortages across the country in
professions such as dentistry and engineering, keeping these students in the bush is vital for the future of our regional cities and towns.” The Regional Benefits Program is open to all regional students and courses such as Biomedical Science (Medical), and Dentistry also have their own unique benefits programs for regional students. New major sponsor just the beginning for golf club CHANGE is well underway out on the greens at the Mooroopna Golf Club. With the upgrades of holes 10, 11 and 12 now completed, the golf club is looking to expand and complete major upgrades over the next three to five years. Mooroopna Golf Club general manager, Craig Prothero said there were big plans for the club, with works currently underway for a brand new driving range to be completed in the New Year. “At the moment, the closest driving range we have is in Cobram, so it’ll be great for Mooroopna and the Greater Shepparton area to have this facility much closer to home,” said Craig. “Greater Shepparton is always bustling with events, meaning accommodation in town is always booked out.

When you go shopping, parking near the shops can be a problem but with over 1200 free car parks available and with 800 of them under shaded cover, finding a car park at Riverside Plaza is never a problem. The developers at the onset considered the problems that exist in a number of carparks and designed their parking at Riverside Plaza to overcome as many of them as was possible. Wider bays was an essential feature, one
that gives you room to get in and out of your car without having to bang your door against the car in the next parking bay.
