FOR anyone driving around between country towns in the Goulburn Valley over the past few weeks, the sight of hundreds of thousands of round and square bales of hay is an encouraging sign that things might be on the improve. But the situation overall is complex. For a number of farmers, the production of hay is a means to generate an income. For some it is a by-product of recent destocking due to unsustainable increases in irrigation water costs and the former pasture land now becoming available for crop and fodder production. New art museum is taking shape IF you’ve driven past the Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton in the last month, you would have noticed the new Shepparton Art Museum (SA M) starting to take shape. T he $49.9 million project is well underway and work is progressing well with the Level Two deck poured last month and Level Three almost ready for the next concrete pour. Stage 1 works are on track to be completed by mid 2020. Stage 2 will see
the car parking and landscaping done, and is due to be completed late 2020. The new five-storey SAM will be more than just an art gallery. It will include a community hub, Kaiela Arts and the Shepparton Visitor Information Centre, a café, workshop spaces, a bar and event space, and a rooftop viewing deck. Government backs La Trobe to deliver for regional communities I N a vote of confidence for La Trobe Un iversit y ’s com m it ment to reg iona l communities, the University has received more Government-funded scholarships for students at its regional campuses than any other tertiary education provider in Australia, valued at over $1.5m per year. La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar welcomed today’s announcement by the Minister for Education Dan Tehan of funding for 94 Destination Australia scholarships across the University’s four regional campuses
in Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga and Mildura. Professor Dewar said the Destination Australia scholarships are just one of a suite of measures in which the Minister for Education is backing La Trobe to support regional communities in Victoria. “In providing unprecedented scholarship funding to attract international and domestic students to our regional campuses, the Destination Australia scholarships will improve student numbers at our world class regional
campuses and provide a welcome boost to our regional economies, including by helping to address skills shortages,” Professor Dewar said. Nine Destination Australia scholarships were awarded to La Trobe’s Shepparton campus.

Italian community remember their fallen AUSTRALIA has become a cosmopolitan community of people from all over the world. The Italian community and people of Italian descent now represents around five percent of the Australian population. It was during the war from 1939 to 1945 that Italians were the enemy and more than 20% of the Australian Italian population
were interned under the National Security Act, many in the region of Tatura and Murchison. For those that have come to Australia in the years since the war, many have served in the Italian and Australian military. Their remembrance of the fallen is marked by a small parade and service at the Murchison
cemetery where there is a monument dedicated to Italian servicemen and women who now call Australia home. This year, Greater Shepparton City C ou nci l M ayor, S e em a Abdu l la h participated in the service and along with others, laid a wreath on behalf of the municipality.

Rushworth
Rushworth is one of those little towns that leave a lasting impression when first discovered. Established during the goldrush of the 1850s, the main street retains the charm of its historic buildings and has since been classified by the National Trust. Visitors can easily spend a day exploring the old remnants of its gold mining past.

THE township of Rushworth enjoys a long history with many distinctive heritage buildings located throughout the town. High Street, one of the few in Victoria, is classified by the National Trust for its collection of well preserved buildings and facades.
Situated just off the main street is the old council depot. A couple of old buildings whose custody has now been given over to the nearby Rushworth Community House with the aim to build it up as an artist’s enclave with future ambitions to make the adjacent old Court House into an art gallery. The sheds already house the Rushworth Men’s Shed while the additional building is being subdivided into a space for a small number of artists in residence, a coterie that already includes an art photographer, a painter, a picture framer and a writer. Chairman of the Rushworth Community House, Eloise Mitchell is enthusiastic about the project. “We are beginning to run some of our course sessions here. We recently did a basket weaving course here and we had a great turnout from the town.’ The location of the Community House project is quite central in this small rural town making access that much easier. Without seeking to necessarily become a tourist mecca, the art depot project is aiming to serve the needs of the townsfolk as its primary focus.

Shire hall reaches 150, not out. RUSHWORTH is an old gold mining town of significant historic value yet fortunately, with the passing of the gold rush era, has been engulfed in a protracted somnolence that has escaped the wrath of developers. At the top of High Street sits the Shire Hall, an imposing building constructed out of bricks that were fired in the region. This year it is celebrating its 150th anniversary since it was constructed. The laying of the original foundation stone was marred by it being purloined almost immediately, a testament perhaps to the larrikin nature of the town’s early inhabitants. festivities and celebratory and commemorative occasions pass through its doors. To help mark its sesquicentennial anniversary, the Rushworth Community House committee have been putting together a series of events to mark the occasion. The hall, as a feature of the town, plays an important part in maintaining its social cohesion in keeping with the annual street parades and monthly street markets. As the Community House committee continues to acquire governorship of different assets to promote an art precinct, it all serves to add to the artisanal nature of the town and the quiet revival of the importance of community.

T he Council under takes ongoing weed control on regional roads to manage a number of weeds including Patterson’s Curse, Horehou nd, Nig htshade and Blackberry. “Farmers and other regional property owners will be aware of the importance of undertaking weed control. DP Jones nursing home in holding pattern Following a creditors meeting on November 6, Murchison Community Care Inc. that managed the DP Jones Nursing Home and Neighbourhood House, it was voted to be wound up and to liquidate its assets. Speaking to a meeting of around 50 creditors, the liquidator
said that due to recent discussions with the government, we are now in a ‘holding pattern’ allowing all services to continue. The closure has seen combined representations from all local members of both Federal and State Parliament including Wendy Lovell, Suzanna Sheed, Steph Ryan and Damian Drum.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP is calling on local health services to consider applying for a grant for construction and refurbishment projects. The fund, first established in 2016 has so far funded 284 grants to a total value of more than $240 million. In bringing forward the call, Mark G epp has advised that the f und has received another $100 million t h at w i l l go towa rd s upg rade s , refurbishments and state-of-the-art medical and engineering equipment. Ru ra l a nd reg ion a l hospit a ls , health services and agencies can make submissions via the Health Vic website. “L ocal patients deser ve the very best care, in a comfortable environment, closer to home and loved ones,” said Mr Gepp.

Lest we forget IN the war to end all wars, young men were killed by the enemy if they acted aggressively or killed by their own if they didn’t. Geoff Crisp was one young man who went to war around 1941 when he was about 18 years old and served as an officer’s steward on the corvette (or minesweeper) HMAS Junee, named after a town in New South Wales. The Junee patrolled around New Guinea and then around the coast of Darwin. It was in August, 1945 when the Junee engaged the Japanese for the first time, sinking three of their barges near Borneo.
The Junee was also engaged in 1945 in repatriating Australian troops that had been captured in Amboina. Geoff was one of the lucky ones and came home safely. He now lives in the Mercy Place retirement home in Shepparton, the only returned serviceman from this era. Geoff has forgotten a lot of his days as a soldier. He has less of an idea why he was there in the first place. For those who were not able to return safely, or came home as broken men, we owe them the privilege to never forget them. Lest we forget.

Is there such a thing as a 100 year flood? THROUGHOUT its recorded history and beyond, the region around Shepparton, along the Goulburn and Broken rivers has been subject to occasional flooding. While the current drought and pessimistic projections for low rainfall in the state do not indicate a flood is imminent, it is worth looking back on some history of floods and always be prepared in case it should happen again. Flood records show inundations since 1870 and more notably in 1916, 1917, 1939, 1956, 1958, 1974, 1993, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The more settled the region becomes, the greater the need that residents be vigilant in case of possible future flooding. In comparing past floods with current settlement, if a flood of the magnitude of May 1974 occured, an estimated 830 houses could be flooded and affect about 4000 residential and commercial properties with loss of access or service and a damage bill around $23M
Greater Shepparton City Council maintain a flood plan on their website that offers valuable information to residents who live in flood prone areas as does the Victorian state government. With the current political climate and the possibility the Federal Government may look to withdraw an additional 450GL from irrigation entitlements, concern arises if the system can cope. No two floods are the same, with the level of new property development in the region taking place and should any number of other factors that influence floods all come into play it creates a lot more need for residents to plan for an emergency should a flood happen. Making hay while the sun shines PRICES through until August were holding around $425 per tonne in the region but have dropped sharply with the availability of current production. According to Dairy Australia, recent prices for pasture hay have been around $270 to $330 per tonne and declining. Supply and demand is likely to impact on prices over time and as those holding stocks need a flow of funds, that might be sooner. For those areas in New South Wales and Queensland still affected by the drought, the prices are holding around the $400 to $500 per tonne. Coinciding with the increased level of production, the opportunistic sale of hay baling equipment up to $350,000 has almost doubled. Matthew Best at Central Machinery Service in Ballarat said, “Buyers are in a reactive phase rather than a planned forward approach.” According to the Australian Fodder Industry, many farmers in the market for hay will hold off in anticipation that prices will fall even further. MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN SHEPPARTON Dear Editor, Recently t here were t wo shock i ng reports released regarding Australia’s failing public health system. The first, rele a s e d on T hu r sd ay, O c tob er 31, det a i led major shor tcom i ngs i n ou r mental health services, which is currently costing Australia about $180 billion annually in productivity. The second released the following day, outlined failings in the aged care sector, with calls for extra funding needed and woeful tales of neglect. In the local press recently, I counted eight local and national stories pertaining to the aged care crisis and zero stories regarding mental health. There were also four letters to the editor about aged care and, yep, you guessed it, not a single whistle about the mental health crisis. I u nderst a nd t hat t here is a huge local story regarding aged care, with Murchison Aged Care shutting down and a lot of people in the area concerned for what that means. But last week’s coverage of the Murchison centre and their financial situation seems both a
little overkill and perhaps a little like an advertisement for caped-crusaders, who have stood up to save the day. But what about our nation’s increasing mental health crisis? Does the media care? As someone who has suffered from mental illness most of their life, I am extremely disappointed with the lack of coverage on this hugely important issue, which is currently affecting literally every aspect of our society. Sheppa r ton has ex t remely ser iou s mental health service provider problems, yet nobody is talking about it. According to the 2017 Greater Shepparton Public H e a lt h P r of i l e ( ht t p : // w w w. g v p c p. or g. au / w p - content /upload s / 2 017/ 03/ Greater- Sheppar ton-LGA-PopulationHealth-Summary-Profile-Feb-2017.pdf), Shepparton has an average of 19.4 mental health clients per 1,000 population. That is a staggering 11.9 clients per 1,000 population higher than the rest of the country. Further, Shepparton has a low rate of overnight stays in hospital, with an average of three nights per client less than the rest of the country. With GV Health currently undergoing major construction, I wonder how much

Maybe the media doesn’t feel the need to comment on the negative impacts of the public health system due to the considerable advertising dollars being pumped into media by GV Health. Personally, all of my grandparents died over 5 years ago and I currently don’t know a single person in aged care. However, I can name at least 20 -30 people within my immediate circle of friends, family and colleagues who have su f fered f rom some for m of ment a l illness, including myself. Some have been hospitalised, some have been treated well, but most have stories of horror and neglect that are equally as shocking as those emerging from the aged care sector. My own mental illness, Borderline Pe r s o n a l it y D i s o rd e r, i s e x t r e m e ly prevalent in Shepparton, according to my local psychiatrist and psychologist. Yet, very few people know about it, even some of the doctors I’ve seen. We need more words in more of the media about this stuff, ASAP. Currently, there is also considerable focus on mental health in all aspects of modern society, with our schools,
u n iversit ies , com mu n it y g roups a nd even workplaces undergoing structural reform to ensure this enormous issue is appropriately addressed. I call on those who have the means to t a l k to somebody who has l ived experience of how poorly the entire mental health system is being ran. From GPs prescribing antidepressants without psychologists referral, 12-month waiting lists for psychiatrists, suicidal patients turned away from the public hospital, misdiagnoses ever y where, crucial services along the chain that don’t link up, in-patient recovery centres with one councillor per 10 clients. T h is is a huge issue a nd w it hout informing the public of its enormit y in our society, how are we expecting anything to change? Yours sincerely, Very concerned citizen, Shepparton. THE Shepparton Bears Football Club are hosting a ‘Come and Try Day’ for Women’s Football on November 17th. The club encourages anyone interested in playing with the women’s team or youth girls team in 2020 to come along and have a casual kick of the footy. Previous experience in playing football is certainly not required, with the day aimed to encourage women’s participation at all levels in the sport. Some think this game is biased LAWN bowls is something that we think grandma might play yet with a prize purse of $50,000, the Victorian Open to be played in Shepparton is open slather for young and old. Since its inception in 2011, the event has become a popular playing destination for both professional and grassroots bowlers. The event provides unique opportunity for every level of bowler to challenge themselves and their fellow competitors in a professional environment.
Close to 3,0 0 0 domestic and international bowlers contest the eightday event over four disciplines: Singles, Pairs, Triples and Mixed Pairs. The Victorian Open is open to men and women who play for a slice of the prize-purse. As well as the seven titles up for grabs, the Vic Medal is awarded to the best-performed bowler of the tournament who accumulates the most points across the event’s four disciplines. Play begins on Friday November 15 at Shepparton Park Bowling Club

Croquet finals getting closer SHEPPARTON Green enjoyed a bye this round, so final’s contender, Numurkah Blue played off with the Shepparton White team who enjoyed a solid win...7 games 71 hoops defeating Numurkah 5 games 60 hoops. The first block of singles teams were level in games, with Numurkah two hoops in front. After the second block of finals, games were equal with Shepparton two hoops up. Rob Houston being the only
Shepparton player to win both his singles. Whoever wins the 4 remaining doubles matches gets the edge on the finals berth. Ian Grose and Rob Houston teamed up to defeated Numurkah aces Kevin and Joan Hansen 7/6. Peter Watson and Margaret Gleeson then crushed David and Rhonda Geddes winning 7/1. With an injury plagued Kyabram being defeated by Echuca/ Moama the finals race is now tightening up.
