In light of overwhelming debts, the DP Jones Nursing Home faces possible closure along with the Neighbourhood House, the medical centre and pharmacy. THE new building additions currently standing out in the skyline at GV Health are likely to radically alter the capabilities of the hospital to fully service the needs of a growing Goulburn Valley community. But, as the infrastructure develops, the need to provide and increase the range of a functioning workforce grows with it. According to current estimates, some 500 to 600 additional positions, nurses, doctors,
medical administrators, social workers and subsidiary specialists and the like will be required to service the capacity of the new buildings, not just at GV Health but at other facilities coming on line such as the Genesis radiation therapy centre and the growing number of clinics around the city. One only has to look at the employment sections of print and online advertisements
for the region to see that almost half of the positions being advertised are for health and welfare related professionals. Elizabeth Capp, head of Latrobe University Shepparton Campus said, “This is something everyone is conscious of. We recently met with the Minister for Health in Canberra to discuss our current needs.” Continued on page 10

A changing of the guard GOOD things come to those who wait, unless of course you are a young woman in a hurry. Such is the outcome of the Greater Shepparton City Council special council meeting held last Tuesday at which Cr Seema Abdullah was elected Mayor for the next 12 months. Cr Abdullah is eminently qualified in her management role and takes on the position while Shepparton is rapidly developing as a predominant regional city. Seema professes to be a mediator and encourages the diversity of opinion and robust debate that council meetings can engender. “I want to thank the councillors for their vote of confidence and support and I am 100% committed to the position,” she said. “The council has a shared front on its priority list of things we need to address. This includes the continued momentum on infrastructure, Maude St mall, new sporting facilities, the GV bypass but we also need to play our part in the social and economic needs of the community. We have a very high rate of homelessness and have an affordable housing strategy in play but we are not the only player. We just have to push to get the funding.” “It is important that we are united and build trust. The community wants to see our position on council encourage debate.” With less than a year before the next general elections, all eyes will be on how the new Mayor goes in her role.

Tim studies at the GOTAFE Shepparton campus and is employed by local business Dowsett Electrical. Owner and operator Bruce Dowsett said “You don’t find many

GOTAFE trainer, Darren Cook noted that “Tim has always been very studious with his time at trade school which was reflected in his above average results in his assessments. He has just been a wonderful student to teach and I congratulate him on this outstanding achievement”

Oncology patients receive special donation AS part of World Credit Union Day, which is celebrated on October 17 each year, GMCU donated $2.50 for every transaction made by their members in one of their branches. LATROBE University is about to add an extension to their building that will enable them to increase the number of students through their doors. In 2019 they graduated 63 Bachelor of Nursing students while they were able to intake 56 new students. “We have more students applying than we are able to accommodate. We expect this will substantially increase when the extensions are complete in 2022. In conjunction with our faculty in Bendigo as well as with the GOTAFE and Melbourne
University, we are looking at all the options available. “Along with Melbourne University, we are developing a program that should add capacity to creating new doctors, It is particularly aimed at regional students and of course, they need to be high achievers with a good solid academic record. GV Health are looking at on-site training programs for some areas in administration and support roles but overall, filling the demand will be a huge challenge for the town. There is a need to draw the attention of practitioners from the city, however they

need the social infrastructure, access to schools of choice, local transport and the like. The new super school will be a game changer in many ways, solving some of these problems.” Notwithstanding, there is going to be a great need for new medical and support staff in all areas of practice if the new facilities are to be fully utilised as intended and while the institutes can produce them, there is likely to be a lag between the time the facilities are complete and the full complement of staff can be secured.

WE are working with Damian Drum MP (Member for Nicholls) to appeal to the Federal Government for funding to cover existing debts and then looking for another accredited health care agency to take over running the facility.” Local Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed speaking on
the floor of the Victorian Parliament said, “The home is well run and is central to the well being of the township. “It’s a home that’s been sufficiently staffed. It’s a home that provided a standard that won’t be talked about at the Royal Commission into Aged Care because there will be no need to,” Ms Sheed said. “Now that community is being punished for caring for its elderly at a standard above and beyond. This has led to financial ruin and elderly folk are being transported as we speak to foreign environments away from their own communities, isolated from their families and devastated by the confusion and grief of the closure of their familiar, caring nursing home.” Ms Sheed is calling on both Victorian State Government and its federal counterpart to step in and ensure the home remains open. The Adviser has been inundated with Letters to the Editor on the matter. Their general theme is that the care centre is integral with the town. Many of its residents have lived in Murchison for their whole lives and to be uprooted at this stage in their lives will be catastrophic.
One letter, written by Gerald Ryan, the uncle of Steph Ryan, the local member for Euroa and published in our Letters to the Editor, laments the possibility of the closure completely disrupting his advancing years of remaining in the small town that has been his life. Coincidentally, Steph Ryan was born in Murchison and has a vested interest in seeing it remaining open and viable. Steph Ryan brought the matter before the Victorian Parliament making a request for the State Government to purchase the buildings currently owned by the Murchison Community Care to ensure that there can be some continuity of service and that the properties are not sold off to developers. As of Saturday, November 2, aged care provider, Respect Aged Care has indicated it is prepared to walk in and take over the facility, provided the Federal Government provide the necessary financial assistance. Time will tell. According to Royden James, the debt situation at Murchison reflects the financial situation at many small non-profit care centres, which puts the onus back on the Federal Government to address the many issues facing aged care around the country.
Upgrade to Euroa maternal and child health centre REGIONAL health services are on the move. Strathbogie Shire have provided the necessary $130,000 to carry out the upgrade that includes a refurbished kitchen, new accessible toilet with baby change facilities, larger consultation room and administration office, new heating and cooling system, a repaint and new flooring. Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Amanda McClaren said, “local families will now be able to visit a modern, fit for purpose facility when attending appointments and sessions.” “Maternal and Child Health is often the first point of contact for families with a new baby and is such an important source of support and advice,” Mayor McClaren explained Maternal and Child Health Nurse, Jane Davey has been working in the area for over 20 years and said prior to

upgrade the building was still mostly the original 1950s nurses’ quarters when Maternal and Child Health nurses lived on site. “It is wonderful to have our facilities up to the standard our families deserve, and to have better working conditions for nurses,” Ms Davey said.

Harleys built in heaven IT was due to the distinctive engine note that around 1994, Harley Davidson sought to register the sound as their own. Other manufacturers objected and eventually Harley dropped the application. Not withstanding, of all the motorcycle sounds, Harleys do stand out. It is perhaps part of the reason that the brand has so many fans around the world. For former Sheppar ton resident, Garth ‘Bulldog’ Wallace it became something of an obsession. Over the years he built up a collection of a number of Harleys and on his death in 2012, his family held on to them, allowing them to go on display at the Shepparton Motor Museum. Some of the bikes in his collection were built in the 1920s. All of them enough to cause any aficionado of classic bikes to quietly drool as they stand behind the barrier to take them all in. While some of the bikes currently on display may no longer utter the distinctive sound that defines a Harley, you can imagine the sound they might make with all of them roaring down the highway in their heyday.

Letters to the Editor DEATH KNELL FOR MURCHISON
Dear Editor, I have just come from a meeting regarding the insolvency of Murchison Community Care (MCC) which runs the DP Jones Nursing home in Murchison and owns the building which houses the Neighbourhood House, Medical Clinic and Pharmacy. Almost 350 people packed the hall to hear of the imminent closure of the 40-bed nursing home, and the elderly family members and loved ones of people who will now have to find somewhere else to live; but will never call home. For most of the residents, Murchison and the surrounding area has been their home for all of their lives, and some, their parents, grandparents, their children and grandchildren’s lives as well. We heard of the heartbreak of the staff that have been there for up to 15 and more years, trying to find new homes for the residents who have become part of their families. They spoke of the hurt and confusion of the residents on being told they have to move, with one elderly gentleman stating he was going to have a ‘sit in’ and ‘tie himself to the rails’, such was his distress. With the closure, 70 staff members will lose their job’s, by far the towns largest employer. In a small town of just over 900 people (obviously not all working age!) that will be devastating for the town. To make matters worse for Murchison, the building that the Neighbourhood House, Pharmacy and Medical Clinic all operate from are owned by MCC and will have to be sold off to pay the debts. There is no other building available for them to go into. The Hairdressers, Pre-loved shop, Community newspaper, Men’s Shed, Maternal Child Health Nurse, and so many other community support groups, which are run out of the neighbourhood house, will all be gone cutting off Murchison’s community support and losing even more jobs. And with the Medical centre also gone, it leaves Murchison and district with no access to local Doctors, Nurses or Allied Health specialist whom visit. The clinic employed 5 doctors, plus nurses, reception staff, admin, with the Pharmacy employing still more. The flow on effect is too devastating to contemplate. With the loss of all these jobs and the loss of the community services and supports, how long before people leave? Taking their children out of the school, and no longer utilising the businesses? How long before the town itself closes? And all for a miserly few million dollars! Surely the Federal and State Governments and the Greater Shepparton City Council can all step up and between them come up with a package to illustrate that they actually do care about small towns and the people that live in them. You will find that 14 days at the flow by price adds up to $75 million but there is another 14 days proposed for next month. The letter we received says the flow is required to revegetate the river banks when in fact it tips trees over. I rabbit on about this to show the futility of government policy to country people. We in Murchison have felt very fortunate to have a high quality nursing home for our end of life living. Living in a small town of under 1000 people is a personal choice. A large part of that choice was due to the great medical, pharmaceutical; phlebotomy services, neighbour house services and finally nursing home facilities. Steph, I have post-polio syndrome, which means I will require a nursing home 10 to 20 years earlier than most people. As I’m 68 now that could be as early as 5 years from now. I had hoped that would be here in Murchison. Rosemaree is quite disabled, with a severely constricted spinal cord, due to her nursing for 33 years, coincidently at DP Jones. She has had 2 corrective surgeries which have prevented her becoming a quadriplegic but she walks extremely slowly on a stick, and she is my carer. With DP Jones operational, I would be able to visit our home occasionally, look over our small farm on the edge of the town, less than 1 kilometre from DP Jones. Without DP Jones being available for me, I will have to go to Shepparton, which is 40 kilometres away. As we are both pensioners, an 80 kilometre round trip would be too expensive for more than a fortnightly visit. As we have been married for 46 years, so far, and seen each other almost every day, I would find the separation unbearable, in fact I would rather be dead. I know my wishes are not of much importance, but I worked hard and paid my share of taxes for 40 years believing they would be used to benefit all Australians. I realise the nursing home has got itself into severe financial insolvency to the tune of $3.5 million which in terms of both the state and federal budgets is a drop in the ocean. A case in point I refer your attention to the environmental flow put down the Goulburn River at the start of the month worth some $150 million, and this in a drought where Goulburn River customers have been allocated 50% entitlement for which we will be charged full entitlement costs. I come to this figure of $150
WHERE DO WE GO NOW Dear Editor, I was born at Paveys Midwifrey 91 years ago. It was just across from the Nursing Home. Even though I have travelled around Australia, my address has always been Murchison. Since our boundaries are now controlled by Greater Shepparton City Council I have seen a movement to strangle smaller towns like Murchison. This is to the detriment of citizens in these areas. If we lose our nursing home and our chemist and our doctors surgery; where do people of my age and physical abilities go?
Where are we expected to get to the doctors or chemist for treatment? Don’t tell me by car as at 91 years of age my licence is under review now. KEEP MURCHISON ALIVE Dear Editor, THE closure of DP Jones nursing home, Murchison Neighbourhood House, Medical centre and Pharmacy will have a devastating impact on so many people living in Murchison. Not only the patient will be affected at the home, but also the staff and at Least 30 volunteers, including 6 at Centrelink, who help out in various duties each week at the MNH. The MNH houses an OP Shop, two hairdressers, craft and quilting workshops, garden club, book club, library, internet café, computer room and the Murch 3610 magazine all run by volunteers. Two days a week, lunches are cooked by volunteers for at least 25 pensioners from Wyabena and around the town. This also gives an opportunity for 4 to 6 primary school students to help serve and interact with the elderly community. THE MNH also houses a small Men’s Shed which may be in jeopardy should MNH close. This will directly affect the health and wellbeing of many men who rely on the shed to communicate weekly with other men. The MNH also has a community bus service, run by volunteers, taking residents without transport to Shepparton and other towns for shopping trips, medical and other outings. This will also be lost if MNH is closed The MNH also houses the Medical Clinic and pharmacy, which work closely with the nursing home, and if closed will affect many elderly people, me included, who don’t have transport and now wouldn’t have a bus service run by MNH volunteers to nearby towns for medication. SHAME ON US Dear Editor, MY mother was a resident at the DP Jones Nursing home for the last 4 years of her life. We chose this facility because it was run by a community organisation, and because of the quality care it provided. It wasn’t successful because the volunteer Board refused to say no to the poor and the vulnerable members of our community who could not afford to pay a bond. The role will work directly within case management and care teams ensuring a shared understanding of key issues related to: theoretical frameworks including attachment theory, trauma theory, brain development, ages and stages of development, resilience theory, strength-based approach and the neurobiological development of maltreated children.

The role will work directly with the case management and care teams ensuring a shared understanding of key issues related to: theoretical frameworks including attachment theory, trauma theory, brain development, ages and stages of development, resilience theory, advantaged thinking approach, adult learning principles and the neurobiological development of maltreated children. TO build on the outstanding work of the Under 12 and Under 13 age groups in its inaugural year, AFL Goulburn Murray has extended its Junior Netball Development Academy Program with the addition of an Under 14 age group. The Under 14 age group will build on the U12 and U13 age groups with more of a specialised court structured development in preparing players for Netball Victoria Talent Pathway programs.
AFL Goulburn Murray Netball administrator, Peita Sleeth is excited about the second year and continued growth of the program. “Given the overwhelming positive feedback from players, parents and our coaching panel about the 2019 program, it was only natural to add another age group to 2020.” She said. “The addition of the Under 14 age group allows those players

The first block of singles showed June Hoge and Marg Gleeson win well, with Ian Grose and Peter Watson just falling short 7/5 and 7/6 respectively. Northern Victoria sporting clubs to receive funding 54 sporting clubs across northern Victoria are set to share in a total of $160,104 in VicHealth Active Club Grants Funding. The new funding will help local sports clubs across Victoria deliver more opportunities for women and young girls to get active, and also supports clubs to implement new social and modified sports programs that appeal to less active Victorians, including people living with a disability. Included in the long list of clubs
to receive a share in this funding are Benalla Basketball Association, Echuca Moama Rockets, Rochester Basketball Association, Shepparton Cycling Club, Shepparton Swans Football and Netball Club, and Tatura Lawn Tennis Club. Member for northern Victoria, Tania Maxwell said, “Through these grants, more people in northern Victoria will be able to participate in sporting activities and create opportunities for people regardless of age, ability, background or gender.”
