30,000 meals for those in need By Sarah Knight EVERY year the Rotary Club of Tatura raises funds to contribute to various causes within the local community and abroad. The club’s 30 members met recently to discuss the relevant causes and charities in need of support and this year, Shepparton Foodshare was elected to be the fund’s recipient. A g r at e f u l r e c ipi e nt , S h e pp a r to n Foodsha re cha i r, Rod S chuber t , said,“Foodshare receives no recurrent funding and with food insecurity continuing
to rise, our own fundraising efforts and the support of the community are now more important than ever.” The annual Foodbank Australia Hunger Report (2018) provides an overview of the issue of food insecurity in Australia, stating that 4 million people, or 18% of the population have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months. T he re s e a rc h a l s o i nd i c at e s t h at Australians living in regional areas, such as the Goulburn Valley, are 33% more likely, than those living in cities, to have
experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months. These numbers are supported by one such Foodshare registered agency, which indicated that in the first four months of 2018 the number of people accessing their service more than doubled. Club treasurer, Lou Worm added, “The club is acutely aware of the problem of food insecurity and of the valuable role that Foodshare plays, not only in food rescue and feeding those in necessitous circumstances, but also the environmental impact the service has; by redirecting more than 300,000 kilograms of food each year that was destined for landfill.” Rod said, “It is largely due to our 20 volunteers and efficient use of resources, that it costs Foodshare just 10 cents to provide one meal, therefore every $1 donated equates to around 10 meals.”
Thus making the Rotary club’s donation particularly significant, as their $3,000 contribution will effectively provide the equivalent of more than 30,000 meals to those in need. Foodshare now has 94 agencies registered to collect and distribute food to those who need it most, up five from 89 last year. A week of reconciliation THIS week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia as part of National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. Greater Shepparton City Council supported the Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group for the 2019 Sorry Day event that was held on Monday, May 27, at Monash Park. The event had a huge turnout of local support despite the cold. It began with a smoking ceremony and a welcome to country from Uncle Lance James, followed by a very personal story from Aunty Faye, who was part of the stolen generation. The event also included wreath laying and the raising of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags. A walk of tribute to the murals of Uncle Doug Nicholls, Uncle William Cooper, Aunty Marge Tucker and Nanny Nora Charles followed the ceremony. Reconciliation Week is running from May 27 to June 3 this year.

Celebrating 60 years of business LAST Wednesday marked the anniversary of Trevaskis Engineering, who started up back in 1959 in a backyard shed. The team celebrated with a barbecue and a huge cake, with special guest, Damian Drum making an appearance and helping to cut the cake. New train drivers set to increase service reliability By Sarah Knight THANKS to a 20 percent increase in drivers by the end of 2020, V/Line will soon have more drivers on board than ever before to deliver more reliable services across the entire regional network. As part of an intense period of recruitment and training, around 30 fully qualified drivers have been recruited across the network in the past year and more than 120 trainees are currently completing an intensive driver training course. At the end of next year, there will be more than 500 fully qualified drivers across the V/Line network, this helping improve reliability, reduce cancellations and prepare the network for future growth. Several trainees are currently undertaking on-thejob training alongside a qualified instructor at both Seymour and Shepparton locations as part of the final phase of their course. Seymour and Shepparton line passengers will also benefit from a multimillion-dollar track maintenance investment, with more than 55,000 life-expired sleepers on the two tracks between Donnybrook and Seymour to be replaced in 2019. Minister for public transport, Melissa Horne said, “As our regional cities continue to grow – we’re investing in the people and infrastructure to help keep our regional network moving and get you where you need to go safely and quickly.”
Former local makes waves in medical industry By Sarah Knight A LESSER-KNOWN fact about the human body is that it contains both white and brown fat. White fat is the type you acquire in rolls around your belly and other places just beneath the skin; however, like muscle, brown fat in humans, follows a ‘use-it-or-lose-it’ principle, basically meaning the more you use it the better it gets. The study of brown fat in particular has become the passionate life work of Andrew Carey, a former local, and son of Carmel and Tom Carey (former The Adviser journalist), in a bid to understand the way it works and in order to ultimately, treat and prevent obesity and associated diseases. Born and raised in Shepparton, Andrew completed his schooling at St Brendan’s primary school and Notre Dame College before heading off to Melbourne at 18 to pursue his studies in sports physiology, and ultimately a PhD in biomedical physiology, at RMIT University. After completing his undergraduate and postgraduate research, in 2007 Andrew initiated a research program dedicated to study of brown adipose tissue in humans. In 2009 he moved to Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, to Prof Bronwyn Kingwell’s highly successful Metabolic and Vascular Physiology Laboratory. Here, with well-established collaborations within the Baker Institute and The Alfred Hospital, Andrew was able to initiate higher impact and innovative work in the study of brown fat in humans. Now leading this research program, the group is becoming established as a laboratory with expertise in this field. Andrew says they are working hard to find a drug that can promote the stimulation of brown fat and therefore reduce the likelihood of metabolic diseases developing in the body, such as fatty liver disease.

Help those in need find their voice
ARE you saddened by seeing constant global atrocities, without knowing of any way to help? Voice for Silent People is a non-profit organisation that assists people in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are victims of corruption, conflict and violence. They promote justice and the human dignity of all people, through community engagement and ‘Advocacy, Education and Assistance.’ The president of Voice for Silent People, Jean Marie Mupenda uses the term “moral genocide” when he talks about the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and one of the richest in terms of mineral wealth and arable land, but it is also one of the poorest,” he says. “Years of violence, corruption, abuse and conflict has led to moral genocide, where the perpetrators destroyed not

only lives, but the moral structures which enabled people to live in harmony in the past. “When I grew up, offences such as murder, rape and paedophilia were very rare. A whole generation has grown up with no moral guidelines.” Voice for Silent People hopes that educating people about the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo will help bring about change. Local vineyard wins share of $2 million fund By Sarah Knight IN A BID to support northern Victoria’s wine industry, increase visitor numbers, boost exports and support local jobs, the federal government initiated a grants program called The Wine Growth Fund, to support the growth of wineries in the area. Closing in October 2018, the winners of the third round were last week announced, with local growers, Broken River Vineyard being awarded a $9,000 share of the $2 million allocated in the third round of the Government’s Wine Growth Fund, which will support 78
projects at wineries across Victoria. With a focus on the export market the grant will help Broken River Vineyard to break into the rapidly growing Indian wine market, as well as localised marketing and customer engagement. The fund is expected to provide a boost of around $12 million to the wine industry across the state with projects including cellar doors, kitchen and café upgrades, wine production facility developments, e-commerce programs, accommodation initiatives and vineyard improvement works.

New speed limit to address Grahamvale student safety By Sarah Knight WITH a view to improve safety for school students, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians at one of Shepparton’s busiest locations, a new 60km/h speed limit will be implemented this week on the Shepparton Alternative Route at Grahamvale. Part of Victoria’s Higher Productivity Freight Vehicle Mass Network and used by approximately 7,100 vehicles per day, the Shepparton Alternative Route connects with regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The decision comes after requests were made to address the conflict of increased heavy vehicle volumes and local road users. T he new l i m it w i l l apply to a

2.5-kilometre stretch of the road, from just south of New Dookie Road to north of Ford Road, taking in the Grahamvale Primary School entrance, Shepparton railway line and Ford Road intersection. The new speed zone follows a regional roads Victoria review to determine the most appropriate speed at this location. During school times, a 40km speed limit will continue to be in place outside of Grahamvale Primary School. Works have begun to revise static and electronic signs. The new speed limit will apply with immediate effect upon completion.

By Sarah Knight THAT number is on the rise, according to both the Council to Homeless Persons and those who proactively support and advocate for our local community. People Supporting People’s founder, Azem Elmaz has been working on the ground in the community support space for over 29 years and when asked about the notable increase in the local homeless population, he said simply, if this was indeed, as perceived to be ‘the lucky country’ – why should anyone have to live like this. In addition to the regular soup kitchen held at the Victoria Park Lake every weeknight from 5pm to 6pm, the People Supporting People food truck and countless other community support offerings from Azem, he and wife, Jeihan have also implemented a dedicated space at the rear of their shop on Wyndham Street which is open 24 hours, 7 days a week and free to use for those doing it tough. The unassuming little nook provides access to coffee and tea making facilities, biscuits and a toasted sandwich press with fresh supplies. This offering is largely funded by the proceeds raised by the food truck, but with the increased demand, more supplies are always welcomed. When asked what contributions are required Azem replied, “Things like long life milk, food offerings and vouchers for people to use at the supermarkets. I try to stay away from dealing with money altogether.” It was lunchtime when we were there and one homeless man, perhaps in his late 60s came along to make himself a coffee. We chatted briefly as he mentioned how grateful he was to both Azem and his wife for ‘the beautiful job they do.’ The conversation was short but within it I acknowledged the cold nights and mornings and asked if there was anything people could
contribute or do that would make life a little easier; the answer was obvious as he welled up and attempted to choke back his tears, stating simply two words, “A home.” A profound insight and one that had my heart sink with compassion for his despair. It seems however that there are many great local community groups, organisations and independent businesses that are actively making a daily difference in the lives of those sleeping rough in our community. One other such organisation is the South Shepparton Community Centre, that regularly provides respite, a friendly ear and links to other local support resources. Passionate about supporting those less fortunate in our community, South Shepparton Community Centre manager, Dawn Taylor said, “I have noticed an increase in people coming to us. I think many of those sleeping rough come in when they hear about the Foodshare offering. Or sometimes the larger agencies refer people to us. “We’ve also given out tents or blankets from our op shop supplies when we have them and Fairleys SUPA IGA gave us a $1,000 grant which we chose to use for personal care products; the sorts of things people need to keep their dignity. We made up individual bags for people. “People can also just come in and have a cuppa or watch some TV. We can generally be just a friendly face, like a family and they can choose to be private or tell us about their lives. We don’t actually ask people for proof of their situation – we don’t judge. “The thing is, you can’t just feed a person and think that will fix them. I know of one woman who lived for three years in her car for example,” Dawn said.

Momentous academic achievement continued from front page AT this year’s graduation ceremony, La Trobe Shepparton also celebrated a momentous achievement, with Claire Qu illia m and M a rg H ickey bot h graduating as the campus’ first two PhD graduates. This is a huge moment not only for the University, but also for Shepparton as a whole, with both g r adu at e s e n c ou r a g i n g e ve r yo n e interested in academia to consider studying locally. Claire Quilliam graduated with a PhD in disabilities studies, completing an 80,000-page thesis on the importance of exploring better ways to design paperwork for group homes for people with disabilities. Marg Hickey graduated with a PhD in literature and completed her research on the ways in which white writers in contemporary Australian literature depict the Australian landscape, and the ways this depiction has changed over time. Honoured and emotional about her stellar achievement, Ms Hickey explained
about the importance of being able to achieve higher education in regional areas. “You are supported in a very different way at a rural campus as part of a super close team,” Ms Hickey said, “And La Trobe have set up a spectacular space for those wishing to gain a higher degree by research. “There are lots of opportunities for academic work in regional areas. You are given much more time and care with your work and there are further chances for research.” As cities become overcrowded, it makes sense that more students are turning to regional areas to gain extra education in their chosen field. Shepparton’s La Trobe University campus is perfectly poised to assist Shepparton in ensuring that education remains local, eventually assisting the entire community in the process. Ms Quilliam said, “We are so proud to be the first in a long run of PhD graduates from La Trobe University Shepparton.

IT takes a lot of courage to travel overseas alone but it’s got to be one of the most magical and personal experiences an individual could ever have. Peta Dunlop has truly mastered the art of solo travelling and embarked on a huge, sixweek adventure across UK and Ireland late last year. For those daunted by the thought of solo travel, she recommends booking a group tour for half the trip and then hiring a car to return to the places and towns you want to spend more time. Arriving in the UK, Peta spent a couple of days exploring London before commencing on the 15-day Cosmos Grand Tour of Ireland and Britain, booked through Tara at Lyn McNaught Helloworld Travel. As an avid fan of all things historical, Peta was incredibly moved by many of the old sites and the rich history of everywhere she visited. Westminster Abbey was amazing, with spectacular architecture and its creepy history. Peta was particularly enamoured with the huge crypts, the final resting home to many monarchs, royals and celebrities. Following a whip tour of London, taking in St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, next, it was off to see the Stonehenge. Peta found Stonehenge, a place shrouded in mystery and intrigue, completely mesmerising. It is estimated that the Druids built Stonehenge around 5000 years ago in the Neolithic period, but nobody truly knows for sure. After brief stops at Bath, Glastonbury, Plymouth, the tour was off to Ireland. Peta didn’t feel the need to wait over two hours to kiss the Blarney stone, opting instead to wander and peruse the beautiful and picturesque Blarney House and Castle. The tour continued into Ireland with a drive through the Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula and a brief stop in Limerick. Next, the group were off to see the stunning Cliffs of Moher, featuring 8km of breathtaking cliffs up to 509ft Page 18 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1458 Wednesday, May 29, 2019
tall. This area gets up to 1.5 million visitors annually and Peta could definitely understand why. The bus continued to Dublin, then back on the ferry to Holyhead Wales, before finally stopping in Liverpool. Scotland was next on the agenda, with a mini city tour of Glasgow, followed by stopoffs at Grantown on Spey, Fort William and Inverness. The highlight of that day was visiting Culloden Moor and learning about the battle of Culloden – the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745. Walking around the battlefield was very emotional and educational. In Scotland, the tour drove through Perth, Dundee and St. Andrews, which is where golf was invented, then off to Edinburgh, York, Sheffield and Stratford Upon Avon for a quick photo of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Shakespeare’s House. The group returned to London for their final meal together and a lovely evening of reflection. Next, Peta hired a car and decided to head off on her own, returning to highlights and places missed on the tour. On her solo tour in the rental car, Peta embarked on some huge days of driving and taking in all the scenery at her own place. There was so much to see: villages, rolling hills, castles, cathedrals, museums, art galleries, and all kinds of historical architecture and tiny townships. Among Peta’s many highlights from her huge trip was checking out all of the locations used for filming scenes from the TV show Outlander, including Linlithgow Castle, Blackness Castle, Hopetoun House and Midhope Castle. All of these sites are embedded with a rich history and many great stories. Taking in as much as possible in her rental car solo journey, Peta returned to London to decompress and relax for a few days before heading home.

Th e g ro u n ds a n d g re e ns a re immaculately cared-for, with wellsculptured bunkers, verdant fairways, decorative garden areas, and the entire course speckled with enormous old Australian native trees. Playing through the course, golfers will note that the Mooroopna Golf Course provides a great balance between long testing holes with easily approachable greens, and shorter testing holes flanked by bunkers. There are many, excellently designed holes which reward golfers willing to take a risk. Overall, the course rewards brave, rather than cautious play. Fans of the course also have a lot to look forward to, with the course currently
undergoing an expansion. Three new holes will be added to the new space, allowing for future development. Renovations are nearing completion, with the club hoping to have the newly renovated course ready for spring and summer games. There are also future plans to implement a driving range. Not only great for casual players hoping to practice their swing or release some tension, the new range is simply something fans of the sport within the region desperately require. With the bar and bistro serving delicious meals overlooking the magnificent first hole, Mooroopna Golf Club is the perfect setting for relaxing or competing in a friendly match amongst friends. Not just golf! AS well as the magnificent golf course, Mooroopna Golf Club also boasts two beautiful bowling greens situated near the clubhouse facilities adjacent to the golf course. The first bowling green opened in 1966, with the second opening around 10 years later. RVBA pennant competition is conducted on Saturdays, while the VLBA pennant competition is played on Tuesdays. Both pennant competitions run from October to March. There is a
host of social and competition events staged for both sections. President of the Bowls Club, Ray Booth, said, “We pride ourselves as being a friendly and supportive club and always welcome new members.” “ We’ve recently upgraded our clubhouse and barbecue area, and we’d love to hold up to four tournaments a year here in the future.” Pennant practice and Social Bowls are on every Thursday.

Message from the Mooroopna Golf Club President
“Recently, there’s been a lot of action here at the Mooroopna Golf Course – it’s been pretty exciting. The course condition is at another level, and we’ve recently completed renovations on all the greens and fairways. We are also extremely enthusiastic about the new development, extending to the course and giving players three new holes. This should be finished by October. “We are also going to be putting in a driving range a little later in the year, offering golfers a complete experience. Everything is coalescing at once and this should also be finished around October; hopefully by spring this year, work on the course will be sprung. “It’s great to see lots of juniors and new faces coming through recently, with every element of the Mooroopna Golf Club coming together a treat.”

Our history 1929: The original, nine-hole sand scrape golf course opened in Elizabeth St, Mooroopna. 1938: The first groundskeeper for the course, Bert Phillips, was appointed. 1949-1950: 140 acres of land purchased for expansion, including land between Elizabeth St and Fairway Dve. 1954: The new golf course clubhouse is placed on site. 1963: Mooroopna Golf Club’s liquor licence is obtained. 1964: Construction starts on changing from sand scrapes to grass greens. 1966: The full 18-hole golf greens are open for play. 1978: Tom Gibbons is appointed the first club professional. 1983: Water bore installed to support the development of the course.
1997: Second water bore installed. 2005-2009: Commencement of rebuilding all greens and couching all fairways. 2012: Club takes full ownership of the gaming entitlements 2013: Club purchases 75 acres on the east boundary for future development. Marg Jacobson has been a member at the club for over 50 years, during which she has seen the club develop and change quite drastically. “Ladies Day has been running for almost as long as the club has been opened. We have about 30 ladies out here every week which is lovely to see.” Marg said. “During the colder months we start at nine and aim to do 18 holes before lunch, then we head back out and do another nine. “It’s all just a bit of fun, and we’d love to see more ladies coming out for a swing.”

COUNTRY MUSIC FARMERS FUNDRAISER will be held at the Kyabram Bocce Club on Saturday, June 8. The lost globalism of International Village ONC E upon a time, there was an optimistic piece of global futurism situated in the northern end of Shepparton called International Village. Planning commenced in the 1970s with much support from local businesses and ethnic leaders, with the theme for the village to “encourage international understanding, goodwill and peace.” As visitors travelled around International Village, they were travelling around the globe, taking in the culture and stories from The Netherlands, South Korea, Japan, China, Philippines, Greece, Italy, and for Australia, the Aboriginal Keeping Place (now known as Bangerang Cultural Centre.) Throughout the years, locals enjoyed the unique adventure park with its huge playground and many brilliant picnic spots. It was a great space to educate and to gain crucial understanding of the many cultures that make up the Goulburn Valley. By the late 1990s, The International Village began to need costly renovation and in the early 2000s, most of the adventure park was demolished to make way for housing. The only remnants of International Village are the Philippine House (the only of its kind in Australia) and Bangerang Cultural Centre. Thanks to Shepparton Heritage Centre and Lost Shepparton for their assistance.

Wheely great turnout for BMX National Championships LAST weekend saw an influx of riders hitting the tracks in Shepparton for the 2019 BMX National Championships. The weeklong event saw an impressive 1,547 entries and more than 3,000 athletes and their support teams, with around 75 percent of visitors travelling from outside of Victoria. The event had a significant impact on our local community, with many of our hospitality and accommodation services booked out to cater for our BMX visitors for majority of the week. A lot of talent was on show during the competition and finals took place on Saturday, May 25.
Queensland rider Izaac Kennedy, who is only 18 years old, took out the elite men’s title, despite being injured earlier in the year. A few local riders made it to the finals, with Austin McNair finishing fifth overall in the 15 Boys class. Zayvier Sandland, Hayden Fletcher and Jamie Mahuika also represented Shepparton in the finals. Des’ree Barnes and Matty Tidswell were the Junior Elite Women’s and Men’s National Champions, while Leanna Curtis took out the Elite Women’s National Champion title.

Goulburn Valley sporting clubs receive grants FIFTEEN clubs and sporting associations in Shepparton will get a boost, as Mark Gepp, Labor Member for Northern Victoria, announced the local clubs that had successfully applied for funding in the Andrews Labor Government’s 2018-19 Sporting Club Grants Program last week. The grants provide clubs up to $1,000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $2,000 to train coaches, officials and volunteers, and up to $5,000 to improve operational
effectiveness. Receiving grants for equipment and uniforms are Tatura Amateur Basketball Association, Numurkah Small Bore Rifle Club Incorporated, Goulburn Valley Football League, Shepparton Pony Club, Mooroopna Junior Football Club, Nathalia Golf Club, Picola United Football Netball Club, Shepparton Riding for the Disabled, Shepparton South Soccer Club, Cummeragunja Women’s Football Team, and Shepparton United Football Netball Club.
Receiving grants for training and operations are Nathalia Little Athletics Club, Shepparton Cycling Club, Northern Country Region of Little Athletics Victoria, and Shepparton Amateur Swimming Club. The Sporting Club Grants Program is part of the Labor Government’s commitment to make sport more accessible and inclusive, increase local participation, stimulate local economies, and build sustainable sport and recreation and volunteer opportunities.
Local legend honoured with new BMX track THE nation’s best riders were the first to test out the $635,000 redevelopment of the Greater Shepparton Regional BMX Track. The upgrade includes the first Victorian eight metre starting hill, all new track lighting and the newly named Leigh Egan First Corner. In July 2018 Shepparton’s Leigh Egan was the second person ever to be inducted into the Australian BMX Hall of Fame. Known as ‘the master’ on the track, Egan was the first Australian to win an Open Men’s World Title in 1984 as well as winning dual World Titles in the same year.
BMX Hall of Fame Inductee Leigh Egan said it was a great attribute to add to his career. “It is an honour to have a role in shaping the way the sport of BMX is seen and played in the local community today. I have been fortunate to have the opportunities to participate in a sport I love on a number of professional levels,” Egan said. “It’s impressive observing the support the club has today and the new track will do wonders for children growing up in the sport and also the town, being able to attract elite athletes to travel to the club.”

WITH the recent demise of the Footy Show on the Nine Network, it brings to our attention the great work in our region done by our TV and radio hosts of our local football. The Front Bar on Channel 7 has taken all by storm, with Fox Football and other channels providing a wide range of football content that is sometimes not even about the game, but gives us all a great laugh. David Fox and John JR Ryan do such a great job with the Footy Show for local football around the GV. They know their local football like the back of their hand and enjoy a laugh along the way. for so long now, with Jason soon to call his 300th match. Jason is incredibly proud of his award-winning team, covering 40 games last year including the GVL, Interleague at the MCG, KDL, SJDFL and the AFL Women’s and Youth Girls Finals. Craig Potter has recently joined the team at OneFM again and every week, gives a great call on whatever games they go to with a few laughs along the way. So, if you feel aggrieved in anyway about the demise of the Footy Show, that was once upon a time a Thursday night must see, get online or flick the radio on as the boys that do it local are very informative and have a lot of fun doing it.
