Skilled tradespeople in high demand as housing targets loom large

WITH the Federal Government aiming to build 1.2M new homes by mid2029, a critical component is missing: skilled tradespeople who actually do the construction.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) this month welcomed the Australia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) contribution to national debate on the importance of education and skills in meeting the housing target, however, it said that Australia needs a better balance between university and vocational education if it is to solve the problem.

“There was no question universities played a vital role in producing the architects, engineers, surveyors, planners and construction managers who help deliver Australia’s homes,” said HIA Executive Director Mike Hermon, adding, “But we also need the skilled tradespeople who physically build them.”

“Australia is trying to build 1.2 million new homes, yet our industry still needs another 83,000 skilled tradespeople to meet demand. We won’t achieve our housing ambitions unless we encourage more young Australians to see trade as a first-choice career.”

New data from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research show

that 95 per cent of construction apprentices and trainees move into employment after completing their training.

“That’s an exceptional outcome and highlights the strength of demand across our industry,” said Mr Hermon.

“Trade is no longer just a pathway to working on the tools. It can lead to running your own business, becoming a licensed builder, site supervisor, estimator, project manager or moving into specialist areas that increasingly rely on digital technology, modern methods of construction and

artificial intelligence.”

Mr Hermon said governments should continue supporting apprenticeship commencements and completions while ensuring young Australians receive balanced careers advice about the opportunities available in residential construction.

"If we're serious about improving housing affordability, we have to be equally serious about building the workforce that will deliver those homes. Every apprentice we fail to attract today is one less qualified tradie building Australia's homes tomorrow.”

Welcoming a new job – and a new life

SONAM Dechen has come a long way from Bhutan in the Eastern Himalayas to arrive in Shepparton and become a valued new staff member with leading aged care providerShepparton Villages.

But many people are glad she’s made the journey – and so is she.

Having immigrated to Australia less than a year ago, Sonam is getting the opportunity to apply her nursing skills and experience in a very different environment – one that’s just a little bit warmer too.

Maculata Place at Shepparton Villages is fortunate to have Sonam on board, bringing with her the benefit of a bachelor's degree in nursing from Thailand, and five years of demanding experience in ER (Emergency Room) nursing back in Bhutan.

She’s getting to apply her knowledge and skills in a different way here in Australia and says she is enjoying the opportunity to get to know the people in her care more closely than she could in her previous role.

Overall, Sonam says life in Shepparton is busy but peaceful, with a good work-life balance.

Sonam is one of a new generation of care staff who have arrived at Shepparton Villages over the past year – employed both locally and from overseas - as part of a major recruitment drive to make sure residents are getting all the care and support they need.

Given the opportunity to move to the US or to Australia, Sonam said she chose Australia, which offered many attractions including the fact that she already had a sister living here.

She’s found there is a supportive Bhutanese community, mostly in Melbourne, but with a small and friendly group in Shepparton too, making her transition to Australian life just that little bit easier.

She’s grateful to her migration agent, Global Talent Agency, and to the staff and residents of Maculata Place, who she says have made her feel very welcome.

It’s still early days - but so far, so good:

Business festival launches biggest program yet

THE 2026 Greater Shepparton Business Festival was officially launched on July 13 by Greater Shepparton City Council, with support from Asuria, GOTAFE, Greater Shepparton Business Network, La Trobe University and Workforce Australia Local Jobs (Goulburn Murray).

The launch unveiled the festival's biggest program to date, with bookings now open for more than 20 free workshops, networking events and business development opportunities.

Running from August 3 to 21, the festival is designed to help local businesses, entrepreneurs, professionals and aspiring business owners build practical skills, expand their networks and grow their businesses.

This year's program features sessions on marketing, artificial intelligence, tendering, workforce development, cyber security, finance, business planning and more, with events taking place across Greater Shepparton as well as selected online sessions.

A new addition for 2026 is the Business Support Showcase Day on Tuesday, August 4, bringing together workshops, business support services, networking opportunities and a keynote presentation in a single day.
