THE HOUSING HYPE

A GUIDE TO LIVING IN MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING

By following a few simple guidelines, you can enjoy your home to the fullest while contributing to a vibrant and well-maintained community.

Caring for Your Home

» German homes differ from those in the U.S., mainly that they feature cinderblock walls which require special care like masonry anchors when hanging decorations. Avoid placing nails or screws in line with electrical outlets.

» The homes are built airtight, so it is important to ensure proper ventilation by opening windows twice (2x) daily for 20 minutes to prevent mold buildup so it’s important to ventilate properly.

Keeping Your Surroundings Beautiful

Residents play a key role in maintaining curb appeal. This includes mowing, edging, weeding and watering the area within 50 yards of your home. Trees within reach should be trimmed and shrubs kept under six (6) feet tall.

Parking

Townhouse residents have a garage and driveway and should utilize these areas for parking vehicles. Stairwell residents are assigned one (1) parking space per home. Additional vehicles should be parked in designated areas, and non-operational vehicles must be stored properly or taken to the vehicle recycling center.

Essential Services and Utilities

» TKS provides internet service with preinstalled modems — please do not remove or pack this equipment when moving out.

» Waste disposal is straightforward with designated bins and bags. Large and/ or hazardous items should be taken to the nearest recycling centers on Pulaski Barracks and Ramstein Air Base.

Pet-Friendly Living

You may have up to three (3) pets with a combined weight of 150 pounds unless otherwise approved. Some dog breeds are restricted, so be sure to check regulations. Always leash your pets when outdoors and clean up after them. Report any pet-related incidents, including bites, to 86 SFS (DSN 4802050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060) immediately.

Fire Safety & Household Guidelines

Preventing fires is simple; never leave cooking or candles unattended and keep flammable items away from stove areas. Housing personnel may enter in emergencies or within 24 hours for an inspection.

Restrictions

Smoking is prohibited in all units, including balconies and hallways. Other restricted items include satellite dishes, large pools, external storage sheds, and unapproved flags.

» Townhouse residents may display one (1) properly mounted U.S. flag.

Respecting Quiet Hours

Germany observes quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sundays/ German holidays. Please keep noise levels in check, including music and pets. Persistent disturbances should be reported to 86 SFS (DSN 480-2050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060).

Vacation or TDYs exceeding seven (7) days

If you are away for more than seven (7) days, plan for security, ventilation, lawn care and snow removal. Notify the KMC Housing Office, and, if you live in a stairwell, inform your building leader with your caretaker’s contact details.

Operating a Home Business

Please contact the KMC Housing Office for guidance. You must get approval from Housing and obtain the necessary licenses.

Financial Responsibility/Renter’s Insurance

Residents are financially responsible for damage due to negligence. Renter’s insurance is highly recommended. Liability and pet insurance can also prevent costly claims.

Maintenance/Self-help

For anything breaking due to normal wear and tear, you may use the self-help stores or call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-4639510. This free service helps keep your home in good condition.

By following these guidelines, you help create a safe, enjoyable, and well-maintained community for yourself, your neighbors, and future residents.

TAKE NOTE

Retired Marine named 2026 DODEA Teacher of the Year

Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Brent L. Cook, a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor at Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan, has been selected as the 2026 Department of Defense Education Activity Teacher of the Year.

“Brent Cook embodies the values of leadership, service and academic excellence that lie at the heart of our mission,” said Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, DODEA director. “Through his dedication to students, his innovative programs, and his commitment to community service, Brent creates opportunities for students to thrive as learners, leaders and citizens. We are proud to recognize him as the 2026 DODEA Teacher of the Year.”

Cook teaches students in JROTC courses for grades 9–12 in the Pacific South District. His overarching goal is to develop students who excel academically while also becoming productive citizens and leaders within their school and community.

the Year during a virtual meeting with DODEA leaders, Sept. 10. Expecting a routine discussion about teacher leadership in his role as a district Teacher of the Year, the announcement came as a complete surprise.

“There are so many great teachers,” Cook said, thinking about his selection. “If Kubasaki has this many amazing teachers, DODEAwide there has to be so many great

teachers that should be in this spot right now. I thought about what my cadets have accomplished, what the JROTC program has done. This is not about me — it’s about them.”

At that moment, he didn’t know the entire Kubasaki High School student body was also on the call, watching live from the auditorium. When the news broke, the room erupted in applause.

“I’ve been emotional since I got back from Afghanistan,” Cook said. “My emotions were high. I was overwhelmed and then, to hear the students in the auditorium when they came on, to hear the cadets … I was not expecting this today.”

Cook holds a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College and an Associate of Arts from the University of Maryland. His professional accomplishments include being named the 2024 Marine Corps JROTC Instructor of the Year and coaching the Kubasaki High School Drill Team to its second national championship in 2024.

Cook’s impact extends beyond the classroom. He founded the “Toys from Cadets” program, which has provided more than 2,000 toys to local Japanese children, strengthening the bond between students

and their host-nation community. Under his leadership, Kubasaki High School’s Marine Corps JROTC program earned the prestigious Naval Honor School designation for excellence in community service, academics, competitive events and leadership development.

The DODEA Teacher of the Year Program recognizes and honors exemplary prekindergarten through grade 12 teachers. The process begins with nominations from peers, administrators, parents, students or community members. Each district selects a Teacher

of the Year through a panel review using specific criteria. Cook was named the 2026 Pacific South District Teacher of the Year before advancing to the DODEA-wide selection.

Along with the recognition and award, Cook will enter the National Teacher of the Year application pool and will be recognized by President Donald J. Trump at a future White House ceremony. He will also attend the NTOY Conference and participate in Council of Chief State School Officers-sponsored Teacher of the Year events.

68 Theater Medical Command hosts 32nd annual multinational military medical engagement in Portugal

LISBON, PORTUGAL — More than 240 military and civilian medical experts from 23 NATO and partner nations, including senior Portuguese military medical officials, gathered in Lisbon, Portugal Sep. 8-12 for the 32nd Annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement.

Hosted by the 68th Theater Me di cal Com mand, the Portuguese Ministry of Defense and Portuguese De part ment of Military Medical Services, the theme for this year’s Multinational Military Medical Engagement was “Navigating through the Military Medical Chal len ges of the 21st Century.”

This year’s medical engagement consisted of a three-day multinational active program that included plenary sessions, breakout sessions and exhibitions aimed to improve interoperability and collaborate on challenges and opportunities currently faced by the military medical community in Europe.

According to event planners, this year’s military medical engagement in Portugal was a complete success, and they were delighted with the support and cooperation offered by allied and partner nations that took part.

“The annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement bolsters international partnerships among our NATO and partner nations,” said Dr. John Casey, global health engagements program manager for Medical Readiness Command, Europe. “It was the perfect opportunity for medical experts to exchange insights, share experiences, and address common challenges. This year’s event was the largest ever with more than 240 attendees from 23 countries taking part.”

Participants came from the United States, Albania, Armenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Estonia, France, Georgia, Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Türkiye, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Portugal.

“The complexity of the future battlefield and the persistence of hybrid threats demand a modern, resilient, and interoperable medical force—one that is synchronized with the warfighter and fully integrated across NATO and Allied formations,” said U.S. Army Col. Tracy Michael, commander of 68th Theater Medical Command. “This event provided an opportunity to collaborate, share medical lessons learned, and identify actions we can take now to enhance our medical capabilities and ensure our

forces are ready to support large ground scale combat operations. Strengthening partnerships and building trust are vital to keeping this alliance strong and one of the ways we do that is through engagements like this.”

The three-day multinational military medical engagement consisted primarily of breakout sessions on a variety of medical topics including patient evacuation, force health protection, behavioral health practices and emerging threats of infectious disease in the operational environment.

“As I mentioned, our overall goal is to continue to make this alliance better and stronger,” added Michael. “Our adversaries are watching us closely. They know that a modern, resilient, and interoperable medical force is a cornerstone of credible deterrence. They know that our collective ability to sustain the fight and save lives in any theater, under any conditions, is one of NATO’s most decisive advantages. In the months to come, this collaboration will enable us to seize opportunities to train together, improve our planning, and accelerate testing and adapting new systems and capabilities to ensure we are ready for what is next.”

The guest speaker at this year’s Multinational Military Medical Engagement was U.S. Army Lt.

Gen. Mary Izaguirre, surgeon general for the United States Army.

“Over the past several years, we have seen the character of war change, and that’s why we are here, to learn, to adapt and to understand how we can medically support operations no matter where they happen,” said Izaguirre. “Leaders often talk about the future of war.

I would challenge us to understand that the future of war is today, and

we are the medical professionals who ensure our nations have what it takes for our collective defense. We are made for difficult things, and we will triumph together. We will be successful through trust and collaboration that are built through meetings just like this.”

Planning for the 33rd Annual MMME event is already underway. The exact date and location have yet to be determined.

When Technical Sgt. James Graben isn’t enforcing munitions safety standards for the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing, he’s preparing to tackle a very different kind of mission — representing the U.S. Air Force on the rugby pitch.

Graben, currently deployed to Ramstein Air Base as the wing’s weapons safety manager, was recently selected to join the Air Force rugby team for the upcoming Paul-Milne Shield tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. The tri-service competition will feature military rugby teams from the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the Air Force in this tournament,” said Graben. “Rugby has taken me around the world, and now it’s giving me the chance to wear the Air Force name in a whole new way.”

Graben enlisted in April 2013 and began his career as an aircraft armament systems technician, working on F-15E Strike Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons. Commonly referred to as “weapons troops,” these Airmen load, inspect and maintain aircraft munitions and associated release systems. Throughout his career, Graben has served at RAF Lakenheath in England; Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho; Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea; Misawa Air Base, Japan; and most recently at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, his current home station.

After more than a decade in maintenance, Graben transitioned into the safety field, where he now serves as the 406th AEW’s lead weapons safety manager. But even while focusing on operational risk management and munitions safety, Graben continues to make time for his passion: rugby.

His introduction to the sport came while walking to class as a student at Murray State University in Kentucky. A group at a campus table invited him to attend a practice later that night. With just one practice under his belt, he played in a full match that same weekend.

“I had no idea what was going on the first half, but by the second half, it started to make sense,” he said. “After that first game, I fell in love with rugby and have been obsessed with it ever since.”

Graben plays the position of hooker, wearing the number two jersey in the game’s forward pack. Hookers are responsible for secur-

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt.

ing possession in scrums by raking the ball back with their foot, and for throwing the ball accurately during lineouts — a set-piece used to restart play when the ball goes out of bounds.

“Rugby is non-stop. There’s no offense or defense; you do both,” he said. “It’s 80 minutes of running, tackling and getting hit — without helmets or shoulder pads. You’re constantly getting back to your feet and pushing yourself to keep going.”

Beyond the physical demands, he said rugby requires serious mental preparation and toughness. Players are expected to anticipate scenarios, commit to their teammates, and keep going even when their bodies want to quit.

“The mental challenges start even before the game,” said Graben. “You plan out every situation in your head during practice, so when you’re in the game, you don’t think—you just react. You do it for your teammates.”

Throughout his rugby career, Graben has played in more than 20 U.S. states and across multiple countries, including England, Korea, Japan and Germany. His teams have included Murray State University, the Hopkinsville Headhunters, Red Lodge Mildenhall, Boise Snakes, Boise Lions, Boise United, Stars and Stripes (Korea), the Snow

covered in New Guinea, along with those of U.S. Army Air Corps Tech. Sgt. Joseph E. Paul. Because the remains could not be individually identified, both men were interred together in the same casket at Arlington National Cemetery.

“This tournament isn’t just about sport,” said Graben. “It’s about honoring legacy and building international bonds between allies who’ve stood together in war and peace.”

Lt. Col. Matthew Sanders, 406th AEW chief of safety, said Graben has been a great teammate and a valuable presence throughout the deployment.

“Weapons safety was probably the busiest safety section during our rotation, but Tech. Sgt. Graben always kept a smile on his face and never appeared to be overwhelmed,” said Sanders. “He was always interested in learning new things and would constantly ask questions that were outside of his specialty. We definitely appreciated his positive and light-hearted presence in the office.”

Graben said his experience in the Air Force and in rugby have more in common than many people might think.

Devils (Japan), and the Raleigh Vipers (North Carolina). He has also been selected for several highprofile military teams, including the All-Air Force Rugby Team in 2019 and 2020, and the Army-Air Force Flying Tigers Combine Team in 2021 and 2022.

In 2024, Graben was selected to represent the U.S. military on the USA Military Rugby Team, though circumstances at the time prevented him from attending.

Despite his experience and commitment to the sport, Graben said it wasn’t always easy to pursue competitive rugby while balancing the demands of his Air Force career — especially during his time in aircraft maintenance.

“In maintenance, our mission tempo was incredibly high, and opportunities to step away for things like tryouts were limited,” he said. “There were times I couldn’t attend selections or camps, even when I was invited — but I understood the mission came first.”

That obstacle, he said, made his current selection even more meaningful.

The Paul-Milne Shield is named in honor of Royal Australian Air Force Pilot Officer Paul Milne, who was killed in action during a World War II mission while flying with a U.S. Army Air Corps crew. His remains were later dis-

“Communication is huge in both,” he said. “If you don’t have it, you don’t know what’s going on — on the field or on the flightline.”

He also emphasized the importance of teamwork in both environments.

“You can’t win a rugby match without the other 14 players working together toward a common goal,” he said. “It’s the same in the

Air Force. If I can’t work with other career fields, we can’t get combat aircraft off the ground.”

When he’s not working or playing rugby, Graben enjoys trout fishing and spending time with his fiancée — who is preparing to commission as an officer — and their two dogs, a black lab and a silver lab.

Whether on the field or in uniform, Graben remains focused on the same values: discipline, resilience and mutual respect.

“Rugby taught me that pain is temporary — but the bonds you form and the respect you earn last forever,” he said. “It’s a physical game, sure. But it’s also a mental one. And that mindset carries over to every part of life in the Air Force.”

307 Bomb Wing visits local schools for NATO Days 2025

OSTRAVA, CZECH

U.S. Airmen from the 307th Bomb Wing visited students across the Moravian-Silesian Region this week as part of community outreach efforts during NATO Days on Sep. 19.

The school visits are part of a broader schedule of events tied to NATO Days, one of Europe’s largest security and air shows, hosted annually at Leoš Janácek Ostrava Airport. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, drawing participation from more than 20 allied nations.

The visits included presentations on U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress operations followed by question-and-answer sessions, serving to familiarize Allied audiences with the USAF mission set.

Nine U.S. Air Force Airmen volunteered to speak with students across six local high schools, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and careers in aviation and defense.

“It was a great experience to be able to speak to the teenagers faceto-face. We were able to share what

we do and how we operate,” said Lt. Col. Jeremy Holt, 343rd Bomb Squadron Commander. “They were excited to share their facilities and how the schools in the local area operate.”

The schools also hosted activities for the Airmen to participate in such as basketball and opening a car with a tool known as the “jaws of life.”

During the visit, students engaged with pilots, maintainers and support personnel, many of whom shared personal stories about serving in the Air Force Reserve and deploying around the world.

Students asked questions from the challenges of piloting a B-52H to advice on pursuing military careers and balancing service with family life.

“It was great being able to talk to students, I didn’t know what to expect. Doing a Q&A with the students was eye opening especially when it was about life in general and asked about advice,” said Staff Sgt. Madison Stephenson, 307th Bomb Wing logistics planner. “I would do it again and enjoyed the school visits.”

409 Military Police Battalion remembers 9/11

nation and protect our people to ensure that such an incident never darkens our homeland again.”

GRAFENWOEHR TRAINING

AREA, GERMANY — Soldiers of the 409th Military Police Battalion gathered Sep. 11, at the Grafenwoehr Training Area theater to honor first responders and the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks during the unit’s annual remembrance ceremony.

“This is a day of remembrance and reflection,” said Brig Gen. John Stanley, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s deputy commanding general. “September 11th, 2001, began as an ordinary morning, but by 10 a.m., it had become a day etched forever into the memory of every American and our allies when nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost.

The ceremony opened with a prayer, followed by a guest speech by Stanley, and was accompanied by a wreath laying. The ceremony closed with a somber bell ringing.

Twenty-four years ago, terrorists hijacked commercial airliners and struck the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. A fourth plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers fought the attackers.

“The absence of those lost is felt to this very day,” Stanley said. “For those of us in uniform, 9/11 is not just a moment in history; it’s personal. It’s the day that clarified our mission. It reminded us of the sacred duty we bear to defend our

Many in attendance were born after 9/11.

“I wasn’t even born until after the attack,” said Airman 1st Class Sarah Stoneturn, an Airman assigned to Grafenwoehr Training Area from the 86th Airwing. “My dad and uncle were in the military, and I remember them deploying in Global War on Terror missions in the Middle East. I came today to honor the sacrifice that my family made after 9/11.”

Senior leaders recalled their own experiences.

“I was an E-5 team leader assigned to Rose Barracks doing close-quarters battle training when it occurred, said Command Sgt. Maj. James Boersma, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria garrison sergeant major.

“We stopped our training and watched the events unfold on TV and saw the second tower fall. Quickly, our chain of command ordered us back to the company. We pulled weapons, gun trucks, concertina wire, and immediately began securing the installation.”

“I feel fortunate and lucky to still be here to help Soldiers stay trained and stay ready because the world can go from zero to crazy in an instant.”

ABC IN KMC: Straight from the heart

We’re all happy to be healthy and fit and hope to never have to endure a hospital stay. But, tragedy usually strikes unexpectedly, and some of our readers may have experienced a visit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. hospital outside the United States that opened in 1953.

The dedicated medical team at LRMC includes a joint mix of Army, Air Force, Navy Reserve physicians, host-nation clinicians, and U.S. civilian specialists and serves over 205,000 beneficiaries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As the primary evacuation and treatment hub, LRMC has cared for more than 100,000 wounded warriors since 2001. In addition, over 56,000 American babies have been delivered in Landstuhl since 1953.

Services include, but are not limited to, trauma and evacuation care, hematology and oncology. In addition, Critical Care Air Transport Teams are equipped to escort critically injured patients from forward operating units or onward to major military medical center in the United States.

LRMC is scheduled to be replaced by the new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center in Weilerbach and expected to open in January 2029 with 67 departments and up to 2,500 personnel.

Life is full of surprises, and it could just happen that you might find yourself delivered to a German hospital for a number of (unexpected) reasons. Rest assured, here you will find the same high quality and professionalism along with heartfelt care.

Today’s story is about a passionate nurse

named Vivien. This name is derived from the Latin name Vivianus, which stems from the word “vivus,” meaning “alive” or “lively.” It also carries connotations of vitality and energy with a large dose of passion. So, let’s meet Vivien who truly lives up to her name!

Vivien Laaks at Herzzentrum Duisburg (heart center) has been working in nursing for ten years. She completed her training from 2015 to 2018 and has been a registered nurse for seven years. She worked in cardiac surgery for six years and spent one year working in outpatient respiratory care. Coming from a family where both parents worked in geriatric care, she grew up accustomed to rotating shifts, weekend and holiday work. So her career choice came almost naturally. During a school internship she helped out at a maternity ward and convinced herself that she very much enjoyed working in nursing.

After her high school graduation (Abitur in Germany), she decided against university, and for pragmatic reasons, chose to pursue a career with a future. Therefore, she opted for a nursing apprenticeship and has never regretted her decision, not even for the length of a heartbeat.

Journey to recovery

There is one reason to opt for a job that requires taking care of people in need day in, day out, and that is the competitive salary. Compensation could be better since in caregiving you have to be flexible and adapt to eventualities, and this can be a very long path until retirement.

More importantly though, this profession requires passion and patience. Vivien enjoys working in cardiac surgery and finds fulfillment in supporting and motivating patients after major operations, so that they can get back on their feet as quickly

as possible. She is supportive in accompanying them on their journey to recovery and enjoys interacting with patients and colleagues. Every now and then, there are “difficult” patients, but in her department the stay is limited to a short period of time, and if problems do arise, issues can be discussed with colleagues.

Never stop learning and exploring

In nursing there are countless opportunities to continue education and training and nurses can specialize in particular areas. Vivien completed further training as a clinical instructor and is responsible for the trainees and new employees. She supervises the trainees and evaluates their performance, listens to their problems and occasionally conducts assessments. She enjoys supervising, for example VZ measurements, postoperative mobilization, wound care and strives to give her best, and she underlines that the trainees will be her future colleagues. In addition, she completed further training as a wound specialist and is required to complete courses in clinical training. Next year she will specialize in heart failure but is also excited to see where her career path may lead her.

International dedication

Since 2022 Germany has experienced a sharp increase in foreign nationals pursuing and working in medical fields including doctors, nurses and geriatric caregivers. These individuals include second or even third generation descendants of former immigrants, people who sought refuge during the great immigration wave 2015 and 2016, or a great number of others who are hired from Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Philippines, India, Tunisia and Vietnam. Currently, the percentage of foreign caregivers is about 21,7 percent in geriatric care

and 16 percent to 23 percent in nursing, depending on the region.

Vivien enjoys working with colleagues with “foreign roots” and her multicultural team functions well. Individuals from a multitude of countries complement each other in many ways, especially linguistically (interpreting). Sometimes it can be challenging, as misunderstandings can arise due to language barriers, but helping each other out can smooth the waves. She values all of her colleagues and appreciates the international atmosphere.

Compassion for patients and caregivers

Speaking straight from the heart, Vivien would like to see more recognition for the nursing profession. More appreciation from the public (there are rare cases of ambulance or emergency room staff being insulted or even attacked), but especially from politicians. The nursing profession is so diverse and often devalued as a “slap in the face.” Moreover, it’s frustrating when more and more obstacles are placed in one’s way. For example, rising timeconsuming bureaucracy or compulsory membership in the German nursing association. Increasingly, competent colleagues are turning their backs on the profession because they can no longer cope with an overwhelming workload. She would like the problems and concerns of nurses to be taken more seriously, as each and every one started their career with compassion for the patients, rather than shuffling paperwork at a desk or having to justify the profession to the nursing association.

Should you ever be in need of medical care, be sure to show your appreciation to the nurses and caregivers. It’s not easy for Vivien, and the estimated 30 million nurses around the globe, to pull on a scrub every day (or night) and still keep smiling!

Get your fireplace wood delivered.

You may start seeing signs on the side of the road reading “Brennholz.” This is the German word for firewood. Prices will vary, but there is a limited supply of dry wood (that has been sitting for a year or two) in some areas, which may make it a bit harder to get wood when it is cold. Fresh wood is more difficult to burn in open fireplaces, so act early to get dry wood. Ask if they will deliver to your house or if that is extra.

Run your ceiling fans in reverse.

Once the temps dip down enough where your heat kicks on, you will want to switch your ceiling fans so they rotate in the clockwise direction for winter to generate a warm breeze (counterclockwise for summer).

Block drafts by doors.

You can save up to 30% of wasted energy just by putting a door snake in front of exterior door jams on the floor. Warm air escapes very easily, even on newer doors with a good seal. Make it yourself or get them at the store.

Lower your hot water heater temperature.

You can save up to 10% on your annual heating bill just

Winterize your house

Although there can be more hot days ahead of us, the cool nights are a good reminder winter is just around the corner. You likely do not own the house you live in while stationed abroad, but that doesn’t mean you get out of all those “honey to-do” list items you would like to forget. If you are new to your new home, there are some things to think about before the days get short and cold that will help you get ready for the eventual European winter. We have accumulated a list to help you get ready!

Fill your oil now.

Don’t wait to fill your tanks in the winter when prices are at their highest. If you have a house with big oil tanks for your heating and hot water (as many older houses will have), you will need to schedule an oil delivery. Appointments may take some time to schedule depending on how busy the oil company is, so make the call now to avoid the mad rush. “Heizöl” or “Heizoel” means “heating oil” in English. Also make sure to tell them you would like to use a VAT form!

by lowering your hot water heater. In the winter, it will feel plenty warm since that air is cold around you.

Clean your gutters.

There are likely some rainy days coming as the days get shorter. You will need to have good clean paths in your gutters, so clear them of debris and fallen leaves. Make sure you leave some time to clean the gutters to avoid poor drainage.

Deal with dead tree limbs.

If you live at a place that has any trees or hearty bushes, you will want to cut those dead limbs down before they come down in the inevitable winter storm that carries strong winds with it. Contact a specialist for those bigger or higher limbs. In German, tree cutting service is “Baumpfleger” or for small jobs, garden service is “Gartenpfleger.”

Check your chimney.

Generally, the “Schornsteinfeger” or chimney sweep comes around for regular visits every year to each area. He or she usually checks your chimney, even when you don’t call for an appointment. If you are unsure if your chimney has been checked or swept, you may want to call your local “Schornsteinfeger” to see if he can give your place a look.

Mind your mold.

In northern Europe, mold can grow very easily. You will want to take car of any spots in your house that are already springing up before the winter comes, when it is more difficult to get rid of because windows are not opened as frequently. “Schimmel,” mold in German, can be easily combated with a cleaning spray from the hardware store or “Baumarkt.” Look for “Schimmelspray.” The store employees can help you understand how to use it (and they often speak English!).

Croatia invites US for Global Health Engagement

ZAGREB, CROATIA — The United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Office of the Command Surgeon organized a multilateral engagement hosted by the Croatian Armed Forces Military Medical Center in Zagreb, Croatia, Sep. 1-3.

The event brought together medical professionals from Albania, Croatia, the United States, and Kosovo to focus on developing standard operating procedures for the command, control, communications, computers and intelligence module within a deployed Role 2B medical facility.

A Role 2B medical facility is a mobile, modular military field hospital that provides advanced trauma management, emergency surgery, resuscitation, intensive care, diagnostics and dental care, serving as a bridge between frontline care and higher-level treatment centers.

Designed to be deployable in austere environments, the Role 2B is struc-

tured into functional modules like an operating theater, diagnostic lab and hospitalization ward, supported by a team of medical professionals and logistical personnel.

“Deepening collaboration with Croatia, and encompassing other allies and partners, is paramount to achieving seamless interoperability,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Kolby Parent, The United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Office of the Command Surgeon international health specialist. ”This unified approach strengthens our collective ability to respond together and maintain stability in the region.”

The engagement also aligned with the recently signed trilateral military alliance between Kosovo, Albania and Croatia. The alliance established the group’s commitment to tackle shared security challenges, conduct joint research and development and improve NATO interoperability.

“As a member of NATO and the EU, we are aware of the need for the benefits of mutual cooperation, which also includes the field of mili-

tary health care,” said Col. Shime Kevric, Croatian army Role 2 medical commander. “We all have specific experiences in this area, and if we share them, it will certainly be of benefit to everyone.”

Three military medics each from Albania and Kosovo joined with their Croatian counterparts in the first-ever trilateral global health engagement to exchange expertise and share operational experiences. By working together, the participants compared treatment techniques, discussed best practices and strengthened coordination among their nations’ medical teams.

“This event was a great opportunity to develop our medical capabilities and learn from each other,” said Kosovo Army Command Sgt. Maj. Ilir Roma, Kosovo Security Forces Medical Regiment senior enlisted leader. “We were able to exchange experiences, establish contacts and strengthen cooperation between our countries.”

By developing, practicing and refining unified standard operating procedures, the teams ensured they

“The engagement exposed us to a range of medical practices, technologies and doctrinal approaches that we can adapt and apply, stress testing our systems in a coalition environment,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Suzanna Gjekaj, chief of pediatric dentistry, 86th Dental Squadron. “I hope we continue to grow these relationships, not just at the tactical level, but across strategic and policy-making circles.”

This engagement showcased the power of partnership in strengthening regional medical readiness and advancing collective security. By training together, participating nations are better prepared to save lives when it matters most.

I realized how little I’ve actually seen of it. Neuschwanstein Castle is one of those things that I’ve practically driven past a hundred times but never got to see up close. So, naturally, I had to change that.

The man behind Neuschwanstein: King Ludwig II

König  Ludwig II could mildly be described as eccentric. He was born in 1845 and died in 1886, not long after being declared mentally incompetent to be king. In between, however, he spent a lot of time (and money) on this castle. The castle’s construction, situated in the same spot as medieval ruins he dreamed of rebuilding, started 16 years prior to his death and has not been resumed since.

Only 14 rooms were finished during his lifetime. Large parts of the castle, including the entire second floor, are therefore empty. He wanted a home that was not open to the public and explicitly said that he did not want any visitors. So, naturally, more than 60 million people from all over the world have visited it since it was first opened as a museum only 6 weeks after his death. I highly recommend getting a little book on him at the museum shop as the tours are brief and there is much to learn.

The castle and the ‘King of Kitsch’

My first thought upon entering the castle was ‘oh my God, this is so extra’. Its first drafts were not drawn by an architect but by a romantic stage painter, Christian Jank, which checks out once you step closer.

If you’re into modern, minimalist architecture, you may need to wear sunglasses to take the edge off because that man was quite literally the king of kitsch. Inspired by medieval art and operas, the rooms are furnished with dark wood, bright colors and anything golden wherever they could find space.

Ludwig’s master bedroom is covered in paintings of Tristan und Isolde, his favorite opera. It looked kind of familiar, except I was 13 and my target of affection were the Jonas Brothers. To each his own, I guess. All jokes aside, though, the chamber is truly deserving of the term majestical.

Ludwig was ahead of the times in many ways. His home included a telephone, with which he could only call his mother as the rest of the country did not have them yet, a winter garden, his own cave, and running water. Legend has it that he dreamed of building a machine that could help him ‘fly’ and see his beloved mountains from above. This was one of the main reasons they declared him insane and not many years later the first airplane drafts were drawn.

My absolutely favorite thing was by far the view from every single window. You have the valley and lake on one side, mountains to another and yes, even waterfalls can be seen from some of the rooms. Honestly, that man sure knew what he was doing when he chose this spot. It’s no surprise that it’s called a fairytale castle. Stop by the The Marienbrücke on your way back to get a fabulous look at the setting and take pictures your friends and family will go crazy over.

Sometimes you just want to wash your hands in style.

Essentials for visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

• Tickets: It comes as no surprise that the ticket counters are busy. We got there a few minutes after they opened at 8 a.m. and waited a full 50 minutes. Reservations can be made in advance at https://shop.ticket-center-hohenschwangau.de/. Book early, as only a limited amount of tickets are sold online. These tickets have to be picked up an hour before the tour starts.

• Ticket costs: Admission costs €21 per adult. Note: a €2.50 online booking fee also applies.

• Photographing or filming inside the castle is NOT allowed. Taking pictures of the exterior is acceptable, though.

• Be on time: You buy your ticket for a certain time, either with a tour guide (English tours are offered regularly) or an audio guide. Your ticket will only get you through the gate during a 5-minute window before it’s the next group’s turn so it’s very important that you make it up there in time.

• Wear proper footwear: Your feet will thank you.

Accessing Neuschwanstein Castle

The info office is conveniently located at the foot of the hill but Ludwig made absolutely sure that nobody in his right mind could bother him so the castle was built on top of it. There are three ways to get up there. I, for some reason I might never recall, thought a six-hour hike was the perfect warm up on the day before (nope) so we took a horse-drawn carriage to get up there but my legs were far from getting the rest they deserved (and cried for).

• The carriage costs €8 per person to go up the hill and €4 per person to go down.

If this picture had been taken twenty seconds earlier you could see the castle in the top left quarter and it would have been a lot more spectacular.

• The shuttle bus costs €3.50 per adult for a one-way trip (up or down) and €5 roundtrip.

• Your feet take you all the way to the entrance gate in about forty minutes- for free. The road is paved but it’s an uphill hike that children can conquer. However, both vehicles include a circa 10-15 minute walk uphill and if you decide against going at 8 a.m. you will have difficulties getting a seat in either.

• Getting to Neuschwanstein Castle

• Driving is the most convenient way to get there. It takes circa 4 hours from the KMC and Wiesbaden and only 2.5 hours from Stuttgart.

• Parking is available. Cars cost €12 for up to 6 hours. Each extra hour costs €1, up to a €16/day maximum.

• Trains are available too, check the DB website for times and prices.
