Col. Jerry L. Wood, Jr., USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, attended the annual memorial ceremony alongside retired German Bundeswehr Soldiers, the French National Union of Parachutists (Union Nationale des Parachutistes), organizers, surviving friends and family and officials from the City of Mannheim. With a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of silence, the attendees remembered the French, British, German and American servicemembers and civilians who lost their lives 44 years ago in one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in Europe since the conclusion of World War II. On Sept. 11, 1982, during an air show for the 375th anniversary of the city of Mannheim, parachutists from Mannheim and its sister cities Toulon, France, and Swansea, Great Britain, set out to do a formation jump from a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Following a
mechanical failure shortly after takeoff, the rotor blades of the helicopter separated mid-flight, causing the helicopter to crash. All 46 people aboard lost their lives: 23 French, nine British, six German and eight American crew members and passengers. Chris Rihm, Mannheim city councilman, spoke at the ceremony, reflecting on the lasting impact of the accident on the lives of those who witnessed it and emphasizing the deep bonds that have grown out of the tragedy. “Forty-four years is a long time,” said Rihm. “And yet, here we are again, in the same place, on the same day in September. That says more about this place than any speech ever could.” “What happened afterward is remarkable,” the councilman noted. “This day did not create distance, but rather a closeness that endures to this day. Our connection with our American partners remains steadfast.” Sept. 11, 2027 will mark the 45th anniversary of the tragedy. Kelly-Herard 435th Air Ground Operations Wing When the U.S. Army relies on the U.S. Air Force for battlefield weather intelligence, the forecasts must be accurate and the Airmen must be combat ready. The 7th Combat Weather Squadron proved they are both as they took home the grand prize at this year’s Thunder Challenge, becoming the first unit in the competition's history to secure back-to-back victories. “It feels amazing winning back-to-back,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Francisco Estrada, Jr., 7 CWS weather forecaster. “The competition wasn’t easy, so we weren’t sure what to expect.” “We were a different team from last year so we couldn’t expect the same output, but we had great chemistry which made coming out on top even more rewarding,” he continued. Thunder Challenge is an annual combat readiness competition for combat weather Airmen. This
year’s competition, held at Fort Drum, New York, included five weather squadrons that demonstrated their tactical weather forecasting and combat skills over two days. To train, the team endured physical training including running, ruck marches, and the Army Fitness Test, and small-arms weapons familiarization. “We put in the time and effort, but it definitely wasn’t easy,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Chaney Hardt, 7 CWS weather forecaster. “Exercises like Thunder Challenge prepare you for the realities downrange. It gives you an idea of the stress you’ll face operating in a tactical environment and builds confidence in your ability to perform in the field.” Combat weather Airmen embed directly with Army maneuver elements, providing environmental situational awareness that directly shapes air and ground operations. “It’s extremely rewarding,” added Estrada. “Supporting Army aviation and ground forces means
we have a direct impact on the mission. The aircrews depend on our forecasts to fly safely and effectively, and they appreciate when we deliver accurate, timely data.” For Col. Leland Cowie II, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander, the milestone carried personal significance as one of the competition's original architects. “When my team launched the inaugural Thunder Challenge, our goal was to design a readiness validation event to ensure our Staff Weather Officers were tested under the most demanding tactical and degraded forecasting conditions possible,” said Cowie. “Fast forward seven years and watching the 7 CWS take home consecutive titles feels like a proud parent moment seeing our Airmen excel at the highest level as this vital competition continues to thrive and sharpen our warfighters.” In addition to Estrada and Hardt, the third member of the winning team was U.S. Air Force Capt. Griffin Petri.

From engineer to storyteller: Barrieau retires after 25 years by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command Master Sgt. Caleb P. Barrieau retired after 25 years of Army service during a Sept. 3 ceremony at Panzer Field on Panzer Kaserne. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosted the ceremony, which recognized Barrieau’s career as an engineer and public affairs noncommissioned officer, as well as the support and sacrifices of his family. Maj. Gen. Michael B. Lalor, commanding general of the 21st TSC, described Barrieau’s career through three themes: service, family and commitment. Lalor said Barrieau demonstrated that commitment at the beginning of his career when he continued the enlistment process on Sept. 11, 2001, as news of the terrorist attacks played on a television inside a military entrance processing station in Maine. “Some people run away when the fire starts or when the crisis begins, and some people run toward the building,” Lalor said. “Master Sergeant Barrieau ran toward the service.” Barrieau enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard as a carpentry and masonry specialist with the 133rd Engineer Battalion. He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 and 2005 before later entering active duty and reclassifying as a broadcast journalist. The career change placed Barrieau in assignments where he documented Soldiers and military operations through writing, photography and broadcast products. His assignments included the 82nd Airborne Division and 20th Engineer Brigade at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany; the 20th Public Affairs Detachment at Joint Base LewisMcChord, Washington; the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg; the 18th Medical Command in Honolulu; and the Army Public Affairs Center at Fort Meade, Maryland. Barrieau deployed a second time to Iraq from 2010 to 2011, where he served as the personal photographer for the commanding general of United States ForcesIraq. He also supported Kosovo Force 21 from 2016 to 2017 before returning to Germany for his final assignment. Barrieau finished his career as the regional chief of public affairs for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s Europe, Southwest Asia

and Africa region in Sembach. In that role, he wrote about Exchange programs and services supporting military communities across three continents. Lalor said public affairs professionals provide a connection that helps bind an organization together by telling its story. He thanked Barrieau for providing that connection throughout his career. “The public affairs officers of the world, the broadcast journalists of the world, they’re invaluable to our command and invaluable to our force,” Lalor said. Barrieau said the work taught him to recognize the people behind each mission and to preserve their contributions through public affairs. “I learned that leadership is more than accomplishing the mission; it is recognizing the people and moments that make the mission matter,” Barrieau said. “Through leadership, words and images, I’ve tried to ensure their stories were told and never forgotten.” During the ceremony, Barrieau received the Meritorious Service Medal, a retirement certificate, a presidential certificate of appreciation, a Soldier for Life pin and a folded U.S. flag. His wife, Monica, received certificates of appreciation recognizing her support throughout his service. Their children, Josephine, Emilia and Cooper, received Army Brat Awards recognizing the moves, absences and other demands they experienced as military children. Barrieau and Monica celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary the day before the retirement ceremony. In his remarks, Barrieau cred-

ited her with sustaining the family through deployments, relocations, long workdays and missed holidays. “You supported me when I was gone, welcomed me home when I returned and kept our family going when the Army needed me somewhere else,” Barrieau said. “You’ve sacrificed just as much for this career as I have, and probably more in some ways.” Barrieau also presented each of his children with a dandelionthemed gift. He explained that the dandelion represents military children because it can take root, adapt and grow wherever the wind carries it. “You didn’t choose this life,” Barrieau told them. “You didn’t choose the deployments. You didn’t choose the moves or the goodbyes. But you handled them, and you grew through them.” Barrieau said his family plans to return to Maine, put down roots and spend more time together while building an agritourism glamping business. He also plans to remain active in Scouting and contribute to his local community. As he considered the transition ahead, Barrieau said the people he met and the stories he was trusted to tell mattered more than the awards on his uniform or the places he served. “I enlisted on Sept. 11, 2001, not knowing where that decision would take me,” Barrieau said. “Twenty-five years later, I can honestly say I wouldn’t change the path. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. I’m grateful for the people I met along the way, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.”

33rd Multinational Military Medical Engagement in United Kingdom challenges NATO, partner nations to implement solutions

OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM — The 68th Theater Medical Command and the United Kingdom Defence Medical Command cohosted the 33rd Multinational Military Medical Engagement at St. Hugh’s College in Oxford, United Kingdom, Sept. 8-10. MMME is an annual forum that brings together medical leaders from across NATO and partner nations. Over 200 participants from 15 nations attended plenary and breakout sessions under the theme, “Ready Now: Strengthening Deterrence through Credible Coalition Medical Forces.” Maj. Gen. Phil Carter, Surgeon General of the United Kingdom Armed Forces and acting Chief of Defence Medical, welcomed participants to Oxford and encouraged them to engage with attendees from other nations and medical specialties. “Conversations and dialogue are the most powerful elements of this conference,” he said. “What is said out in the breakouts is more important than what is said on this stage. Warfare evolves, but human physiology has not.” Brig. Gen. Lance C. Raney,
Commanding General, 68th Theater Medical Command and Command Surgeon, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, provided his 90-day medical assessment of the theater since assuming command over the summer. He identified three challenges that NATO and partner nations must overcome: reliance on technology, foundational skill degradation, and accumulating operational risk. “The challenges I’ve identified are not the ones we typically discuss in our medical forums, but I assure you they directly impact the effectiveness of our medical mission and the capabilities we bring to the operational environment,” said Raney. Raney added, “We must first be proficient in our core skills – clinically, tactically, individually, and collectively. We must be present on the battlefield and resilient – in our people, our equipment, and our systems.” Any future conflict will present challenges of scale and complexity. “These problems require us to develop new ideas, collaborating across national borders to address them. Industry, academia, and military medical specialists, working together, through events like MMME, is essential to meeting
these challenges,” said Carter. The three-day engagement consisted of breakout sessions and workshops where attendees discussed leadership, data integration, innovation, patient evacuation, mass casualty and triage, medical logistics, force health protection, interoperability, human performance optimization, and microbial resistance in the operational environment. Lt. Gen. Mary K. Izaguirre, U.S. Army Surgeon General and Commanding General, U.S. Army Medical Command was the guest speaker. She encouraged attendees to keep two principals in mind. “One: we must ensure our systems are field tested. We must stress-test our partnerships, force our technology into austere environments, and challenge our capabilities in training to build the confidence required to overcome any challenge in combat,” she said. “Two: we must anchor our efforts in purpose. We are not just moving assets on a map. We are honoring a sacred promise made to every warrior who steps onto the battlefield: the best medical is with you every step of the way.” Planning is underway for Germany to host the 34th MMME in 2027.

ABC in KMC: WILLKOMMEN IM PFÄLZERWALD by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Palatium The Pfälzerwald, or Palatinate Forest, is one of Germany’s largest connected forest areas. Romans that settled 2,000 years ago gave it its name. The Pfälzerwald has a total area of 1770 square kilometers (683 square miles) and covers about one third of the complete Pfalz Region. The City of Kaiserslautern aced it and is situated in a valley right in the heart of it. Apart from the actual forest and natural habitat for an array of domestic animals, it also offers spectacular attractions. For example, a fabulous view over the countryside from Donnersberg at an altitude of 686 meters (2250 feet), just north of Winnweiler. Celts also favored this spot about 3,000 years ago and a restructured village can be visited in Steinbach. The village is currently undergoing renovations but is expected to re-open later in the fall. Stay tuned for updates at https://www.keltendorf-steinbach.de/ Steam engines and a historic castle Another great way to experience the forest is a picturesque train ride from Kaiserslautern through Neustadter Valley. There you can board a historic steam engine train and enjoy a relaxing ride in slow motion. Neustadt/Weinstrasse is a cozy city with half-timbered houses, small alley ways and a large market square with a stunning church. Hambach Castle is an attraction in Neustadt’s city section Hambach. The castle

is embedded at the fringe of the forest and holds historical significance as Germany’s “cradle of democracy,” when citizens stood up in opposition to the Bavarian government in 1832. Germany’s black, red and golden flag was first introduced at that time. The vista over the vineyards along the “Deutsche Weinstrasse” is magnificent and on sunny, clear days you can see all the way to Mannheim. Richard the Lionhearted Past the highest mountain in the area the “Kalmit,” the trails will lead you past Landau and Wissembourg, France, to nearby Trifels Castle on a hilltop in Annweiler. There, none other than “Richard the Lionhearted,” King of England, was held captive in 1193 for about a year until a ransom of 23 tons of silver was paid for his release. In addition, there are a number of “Pfälzerwaldhütten” along the many trails, consisting of cozy wooden cottages that usually offer food and drinks for hikers. Annweiler is also host of the Keschdefeschd on Oct. 3 and 4, where visitors can enjoy anything and everything that has to do with chestnuts. House of Sustainability The forest is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the Palatinate Forest and Northern Vosges are celebrating their 27th anniversary this year with a number of special events. The “Haus der Nachhaltigkeit” (House of Sustainability) is located near Trippstadt and offers a garden with domestic plants, a delicious buffet for butterflies, an orchard with almost extinct fruits, a climate
station, a picnic area with playground and trees to climb on. Seminar rooms can be booked for conferences, and the center offers a treasure chest of information regarding nature protection and sustainability. For details see: https://hdn.wald.rlp.de/ Dahner Felsenland Just nearby in Dahn, the forest shows yet another face, the Dahner Felsenland is a fascinating world of bizarre sandstone formations such as the “Teufelsfelsen” (devil’s rock). Hiking fans can also venture into neighboring France and experience yet another section of the forest leading up to the historic City of Bitche with a mighty citadel and its Garden for Peace alongside a historic city center. The Palatinate Forest has a total of 5,000 kilometers of hiking and walking trails on a network stretching north-south, east-west or even crisscrossing. There are 272 different trails to choose from and Landstuhl opened two new premium trails in Karlstalschlucht (valley) just past Hohenecken. The longer one is for passionate hiking fans and the second, shorter round for a more relaxed walk on fastened trails. Some communities offer culinary hikes on paved walkways where you can enjoy a leisure walk, dine and wine along the way while experiencing incredible views. Take a walk on the wild side For those that are not quite so fond of hiking, but enjoy leisurely nature walks, Wildpark Betzenberg offers great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and see a variety of

flora and fauna in the local area. Located in east Kaiserslautern, behind Kleber Kaserne and across from Gasthaus Quack, it is also home to the Palatinate forest and many species of animals such as wild horses. The park spans 25 hectares, and the large premises are inhabited by many different animals, including aurochs and wild horses, called tarpans. Does, fawns and bucks graze in grassy enclosures. Wild boar and piglets splash in the mud, while goats and their kids play chase. Wisents, the European bison and an endangered species, are cautiously kept in a separate corral, and the fluffy calves may curiously walk up to the fence. A 1.5 km long water pipeline was installed and covered feeding sheds also serve as protection against wind and rain. The wild boar enclosure has a muddy area where animals like to dig and roll around. A large grassy area with trees is provided for deer and goats. Fir trees offer a natural roof for the grazing animals and observing visitors. A walk may be especially charming in late September or early October when the trees turn yellow, orange and red during “Altweibersommer” (old wives’ summer). CLAMART, FRANCE — U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Stackle, commander of Medical Readiness Command - Europe, and director of Defense Health Network Europe, recently visited the French Percy National Army Training Hospital to enhance bilateral medical relations and deepen cooperation between U.S. Army Medicine and the French Military Health Service.
During the visit, Brig. Gen. Stackle met with French Brig. Gen. Isabelle Drouillard, Commander of the Percy Hospital, and other senior French Military Health Service leaders to discuss medical capabilities, operational readiness and opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation. The U.S. delegation received detailed briefings from Col. Prof. Nicolas Donat, head of Percy’s Burn Center, and Col. Dr. Leo Borrini, head of Rehabilitation, highlighting specialized capabili-
ties with direct relevance to military trauma care and the recovery of wounded service members. The visit represented another step in the expanding relationship between Percy Hospital and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The partnership developed through a series of reciprocal engagements focused on trauma care, burn care and operational medical readiness, creating opportunities for continued clinical exchanges and greater interoperability between U.S. and French military
medical professionals. “Building and sustaining strong partnerships with our French allies is vital to ensuring rapid, synchronized medical support during coalition operations,” Stackle said. “Engagements like this allow us to share clinical best practices and build the mutual trust necessary to save lives on the battlefield.” Located in Clamart, southwest of Paris, the Percy National Army Training Hospital (HNIA Percy) is operated by the French Armed
Forces Health Service under the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Its priority mission is providing operational medical support to deployed French armed forces and planning the equivalent of one full clinical service rotation annually for foreign missions. The military hospital also contributes to the French public health service. Percy operates as a premier Level 1 trauma center and reference facility for severe polytrauma patients, including combat casu-

September 25, 2026 alties, attack victims, and domestic trauma cases. Supported by a 1,300-member military and civilian staff, the facility maintains more than 300 beds. Its clinical scope encompasses emergency medicine, burn care, critical care, surgical services, imaging, pharmacy, physical and psychological rehabilitation, and the Main Center of Medical Expertise for aircrews. Additionally, the Percy campus hosts two key specialized organizations of the French Armed Forces Health Service: the Armed Forces Blood Transfusion Center and the Armed Forces Radiological Protection Service. “Collaborating closely with institutions of Percy’s caliber is essential to coalition readiness,” added Stackle. “Understanding each other’s clinical doctrines, specialized facilities, and operational capacities before a crisis occurs ensures our medical forces can seamlessly integrate during multinational contingencies.” During the engagement, Stackle met with French Military Health Service officials to review medical capabilities and explore future operational cooperation.
“Touring Percy gave our team a much deeper appreciation of the French military’s sophisticated capabilities, particularly in burn management, critical care, and rehabilitation,” said Stackle. “Strengthening our bilateral relationship with the French military health community ensures Army Medicine remains fully aligned with our European partners.” Also taking part in the engagement was Dr. John Casey, the global health engagement coordinator for Medical Readiness Command – Europe, who emphasized that reciprocal engagements establish long-term interoperability. “Our engagements with French counterparts lay the groundwork for continuous clinical exchanges and coordinated planning,” said Casey. “These relationships translate directly into enhanced interoperability and a stronger allied medical posture throughout Europe.” The engagement highlights the enduring commitment of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, and Army Medicine to cultivate multi national interoperability and col lective readiness across NATO allies.

From ‘pound sand’ to protector: How a USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Army Civilian turned rejection into leadership, community service Story by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz When he graduated from Hueneme High School in Oxnard, California in 1998, Lee Lewis longed to be a police officer. So, after three years of college, on Sept. 11, 2001, he took a shot with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. “They told me to go pound sand,” Lewis said, laughing. “They said I was a good candidate, but to come back in five years. I really didn’t have five years.” A challenge. Fortunately, Lewis liked challenges, and today, as the deputy director for the Directorate of Emergency Services at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, he sees them every day. Along with his work in the community as both a semipro football player and his volunteer efforts coaching youth sports, Lewis has found his niche. Fusing these two worlds is where Lewis’ leadership shines, said Claude Jones, a colleague of Lewis since 2020. “He’s a team builder,” Jones said. “He’s someone you want to be like.” How It Started Not long after the Ventura Sheriff’s ‘No,’ Lewis found an Army recruiting station, got a military job
as a policeman, and embarked on a career as a Soldier who also had a passion to coach and play football. At the start of his military career, Specialist Lewis saw an opportunity to play arena football for a local team. His squad leader didn’t agree with the choice. “He told me, ‘Give up all those dreams and focus on being an NCO,” Lewis said. Another challenge, which Lewis accepted, and did well as an NCO. A decade later, he also started back with football thanks to a more level-headed boss. Following his Army retirement after 18 years of service and a short stay in Texas, Lewis joined Installation Management Command at USAG RheinlandPfalz in 2020, serving as DES operations officer.
collaboration with their Air Force counterparts. Prior to Lewis becoming the DES deputy, he served as chief of operations for one of the most complex garrisons in Europe. Jaime Belmont, Lewis’ successor in that role, was brand new to the world of ‘Ops.’ “It’s a big job. I was worried I would not be able to reach the same level of execution he did,” said Belmont, who came from an Army plans and stationing background. “What made it a little easier was knowing Lee wasn’t too far away. I knew I wasn’t alone.” Belmont also saw how the influence of coaching and playing football melded with Lewis’ leadership style. “He’s direct. No baloney. He’s got zero problem saying something is dumb.”
A Career Serving Soldiers In his role as DES deputy, Lewis currently supervises physical security, law enforcement and emergency response at 26 Army sites that make up the ‘home away from home’ to the largest population of Americans outside of the U.S. That response includes seven fire stations that assist on mutual aid calls in the German community and police officers who watch over the garrison and the local communities in

Their mother, Aneis Mills, has seen growth in both of her sons, but highlighted a pivotal moment in 2025 — when the boys began hitting-and-tackling practice — where Lewis had a profound effect on Jacob. “(Jacob) was a scared little kid. He wasn’t doing what we taught him, and when we finished practice that night, he didn’t speak to me and was crying,” Aneis said. “Lee messaged me right after practice. He knew something was up. I told him I didn’t know what to do. The next day, Lee pulled Jacob aside and talked to him, and by the end of that practice, (Jacob) was hitting other kids full on. “I’ve seen both my sons’ growth in football and leadership because of Lee. He has a calling to give back to the community,” she added. Lewis also continued playing tackle football as quarterback and linebacker in Belgium, and later as player and coach in semi-pro football locally. Torrance Brown, an IMCOM-Europe staff member, coached against Lewis in 2024 and said Lewis’ ability to overcome challenges was notable. “I think you see his drive in
the work he delivers with IMCOM,” said Brown, who also serves as an assistant coach for the European Football League Frankfurt Galaxy. “He’s always ensured everything we needed from him and his team got done.” Challenges Accepted and Overcome Lewis’ sister, Blair, said from his time wanting to be a Ventura County Sheriff to being an Army leader, she knew Lee would always stand tall. “Lee has overcome so much,” she said. “He’s had so many blows in life and he’s always stood tall. He has been my biggest inspiration and role model.” For Lewis, supporting war fighters and empowering his team turns every challenge into an opportunity. “Serving the community is the real reward. The police, the first responders and the things we do so warfighters can go off and do great things. That matters,” Lewis said. POWIDZ, POLAND – Hussar Saber 26-4, a bilateral training exercise between U.S. and Polish forces, began Sept. 14, and will focus on strengthening each nations’ mission readiness, interoperability and ability to rapidly deploy and sustain operations.
The two-week exercise includes service members and aircraft assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, at Ramstein Air Base, 52nd Fighter Wing, at Spangdahlem Air Base and Poland’s 33rd Air Base to conduct integrated training across Poland. “Hussar Saber is a bilateral exercise conducted four times per year to facilitate integration and
partner capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Brian K. Jarrell, 52d Operations Group Detachment 1 commander. “Integration between U.S. and Polish Air Forces sets the baseline for contingency operations and successful European deterrence on NATO’s Eastern flank.” The training includes tactical airlift and airdrop operations, lowlevel flights, night operations, and landings in austere conditions.

NIJMEGEN, NETHERLANDS — Every evening since October 2014, 48 lights have illuminated Nijmegen’s De Oversteek bridge one by one, marking the lives of the 48 American soldiers killed during the Waal River crossing on Sept. 20, 1944. As the sun set over Nijmegen on Sept. 20, 2026, Dutch, American, and Allied service members, Dutch veterans, relatives of World War II veterans, and local community members walked together beneath those lights, continuing a tradition that has brought the two nations together for more than a decade. The march began in October 2014, after the bridge was built with 48 lights to represent the soldiers who died during the crossing. “Every night at sunset, a veteran walks the Sunset March on this bridge,” said retired Lt. Col. Tim Rowling, Royal Netherlands Air Force. “Each and every night again and again. No matter the weather, there's always a veteran walking the bridge at sunset.” For the Dutch community, the march is more than a commemoration of one battle. “I think that’s such an incredible act that we honor these 48 soldiers every night,” Rowling said. “We honor all our liberators, not only these 48 soldiers, but all our liberators who were able to free the Netherlands in 1944 and 1945.” For those who continue the tradition, the reason for remembering remains simple. “We are standing here on holy grounds,” said Gos Staps, a retired Dutch military officer. “Those guys gave their lives for us to be able to stand here today.” “They died for our freedom,” Staps said. “Now we are allowed to do what we want to do, to say what we want to say, and to live life however we want.” The crossing itself was part of the 82nd Airborne Division’s effort
to secure the Nijmegen bridges during Operation Market Garden. American soldiers crossed the Waal under heavy Nazi fire, suffering 48 fatalities during the crossing and the fighting that followed. More than eight decades later, the Dutch continue to visit the places where American soldiers fought and died. “Yesterday I made the remembrance jump,” Staps said. “Last weekend I walked 112 kilometers on that very same hill Americans did 82 years prior. We walked around the area of Hell’s Highway as long as possible. We visited every cemetery on those routes. We brought our respective greetings, a candle, and that’s it. Just to remember all those guys who fought for us.” The annual remembrance of the operation has become part of the relationship between the Netherlands and the United States. “For a lot of Dutch people, it is important that we continue doing this,” Staps said. “The ones who were there are not able to tell us about what happened in ’44 and ’45. They're not here to make sure we don’t forget what happened and we don’t forget what those guys did.” The relationship has continued across generations, with Dutch and American service members standing together at the same places where the two nations first forged their connection during the war. “They came from America, didn’t know the environment of the Netherlands,” Staps said. “They had no personal reason to fight for us, but they still suited up. They came, they fought and some of them never made it back. It is our duty to forever honor them for what they did.” As the 48 lights illuminate across the bridge each evening, the march serves as a physical reminder that the relationship created during the liberation of the Netherlands did not end when the war did. “It is symbolic for all liberators of the Netherlands,” Rowling said. Airman runs 2,977 miles honoring 9/11 victims by Airman 1st Class Nelvis Sera Air University Public Affairs At Fort Rucker, Alabama, Air Force Capt. Hanna Born trains the next generation of rotary-wing aviators in the TH-1H training helicopter. Outside the cockpit, she is leading a personal mission to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by running 2,977 miles — one mile for each person killed that day. Born, an instructor pilot assigned to the 23rd Flying Training Squadron, launched the effort on Sept. 11, 2025, with the goal of carrying their stories forward to the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Her connection to 9/11 is personal. She and her younger sister were inside the Pentagon Child Development Center when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building. “We were safely evacuated and reunited with our family, which is an outcome thousands of others never received,” Born said. “We’ve always felt a deep obligation to honor the lives and families who were not as fortunate.” With each mile, she shares a victim’s name and story on social media, ensuring the lives behind the numbers are remembered. “I want to make sure people hear their names,” Born said. “Not just the number; the people.” Service runs deep in the Born family. leadership roles throughout her 30-year career, including dean of the faculty at the academy. Her father, retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Tim Born, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1975 and served 21 years on active duty. Both daughters followed their parents into military service. Hanna Born graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2020, and her younger sister, Marine Corps 1st Lt. Heather Born, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2023, and now serves as a communications strategy officer assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in Okinawa, Japan.
their lives during what was such a devastating moment for our nation is a great commitment to undertake,” said Air Force 2nd Lt. Mackenzie Lucas, an undergraduate helicopter training student assigned to the 23rd Flying Training Squadron. “Capt. Born’s actions highlight the greater purpose we all have — in military training or not — to support our nation and care for those around us.” Balancing the project with the responsibilities of being an instructor pilot has not always been easy for Born. “The time management can be challenging,” she said. “But the miles themselves are the easy part. I want to run them for the person I’m honoring and for their loved ones who still feel the weight of their loss.” Born said she often reflects on the individuals who helped evacuate children from the Pentagon Child Development Center that morning. “They were unsung heroes,” she said. “They saw what was happening and stepped in without hesitation, never seeking recognition. We still don’t even know their names.” That example continues to guide how she trains her students today. “Above all, it highlights the passion aviators, service members and Americans alike have to honor those who have fallen during our darkest moments,” Lucas said. “Capt. Born has inspired me to embody service before self in and out of uniform, as she has for countless others.” Born said the running project was never about athletic achievement but about honoring lives and keeping a promise alive for a new generation. “I hope people understand the promise to ‘never forget’ is still being carried forward,” she said. “For any larger purpose you care about, there’s always a way to share it and make an impact.” For Born, that impact is measured one mile at a time: 2,977 miles. 2,977 names. 2,977 lives. And the promise to never forget.

Growing up in a military community helped shape the family's sense of purpose. “We were surrounded by people who were committed to something greater than themselves,” Born said. “That environment makes you want to contribute in the same way.” Running has long been part of her life. Raised in Colorado, Born developed a love for the sport at an early age, influenced by her parents. Over time, running became more than physical training and took on deeper meaning. She also recognized that many of the airmen she trains today were not yet born when the attacks occurred. “I wanted to do something honoring our promise to never forget — not just once a year every September, but every day — and something that could be shared with the younger generation,” Born said. “Even though they were not here to have memories of 9/11, they have never known a world untouched by its impact.” Her first organized run took place Sept. 11, 2025, with members of her squadron at Fort Rucker. About 30 airmen gathered before morning flight operations to run 9.11 miles together in remembrance. Since then, the effort has expanded beyond the squadron, reaching a global audience of participants who follow her progress and dedicate miles of their own through social media. “To memorialize every person who lost

If your child is born in Germany, then there are a number of steps to keep in mind to ensure proper documentation and for the application of a passport. The Registry Office (Standesamt) in Landstuhl is responsible for documenting births and issuing German and international birth certificates for babies born in Landstuhl. Documents can be sent beforehand per email standesamt@landstuhl.de, stating your telephone number and the number of desired birth certificates, and to arrange an appointment. Palatinate Forest For those who live in or near Kaiserslautern, you have natural gold right in your back yard. The Palatinate Forest is absolutely beautiful during the autumn. From a distance, the hills can almost seem like a painting: grand splotches of gold, green and orange intermingle. It’s outstanding. And there are an abundance of places to hike and bike in the forest. It’s a must-do. Where to start: For adventurers, plug “Johanniskreuz” into your GPS and just start driving. Once you get there, pick a direction, go, and enjoy. For those who need a little more precision, Highway 48 from Kaiserslautern to Burg Trifels is tough to beat. Hessen Spessart Nature Park The Spessart is a heavily forested range of small, old mountains that stretch from northern Bavaria into Southern Hessen. Going there is like visiting an
ancient, almost archetypal version of Germany. Autobahns and large cities disappear, replaced by vast stretches of what feels like well-cultivated wilderness. Parts of the forest are populated by hundreds-year old oak trees, towering beech trees and deep silence. It’s especially gorgeous in autumn. Where to start: Begin in Biebergemund, and wind your way southeast along Highway 276 to Lohr am Main. It will give you a great taste of the Spessart, and will provide ample opportunities to take small side roads north or south into the forests. Vineyards Autumn is harvest season for German vintners. This much is true. But for anyone who has witnessed hillsides of vines packed with golden leaves, autumn is also leaf-peeping season. Fortunately for most Americans living in Germany, you’re rarely
far from great wine regions. Where to start: The Mosel Region has loads of picturesque views, especially above towns

like Piesport or Bernkastel-Kues. Of course, there are also amazing vineyards to see in the Pfalz region or the Nahe region.

Black Forest Even though the Black Forest is famous for its evergreen trees, autumn colors can be found in abundance. Best of all, the ambiance of the Black Forest is perfect for the fall season. There are golden fields, long shadows, gothic villages and comfortable gasthauses in which to warm yourself. As day turns to night, things might even start to seem a little spooky. Where to start: This region is ideal for driving, and there are a ton of jumping off points. Start in Pforzheim and wind your way south along Highway 294 to Freudenstadt. Or begin in Baden Baden and dive into the heart of the forest along Highway 500. Whatever route you choose, you won’t be disappointed.
