As pilots and loadmasters coordinate throughout each phase of a mission, their ability to communicate and execute together means the difference between a successful sortie and a missed objective. For the 37th Airlift Squadron loadmasters, coordination took on a different rhythm during exercise Hussar Saber 26-4, where U.S. and Polish forces trained together across Poland strengthening readiness and interoperability amongst NATO Allies. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jade Morin, 37th AS loadmaster and flight chief of training, helped develop and implement the squadron’s training objectives during the exercise. Under Secretary of the Air Force sees Ramstein AB Airmen, Guardian readiness firsthand

U.S. Air Force Capt. Nicole Coon, 435th Security Forces Squadron officer in charge of Phoenix First in Security Team, briefs the Under Secretary of the Air Force Matt Lohmeier on the capabilities of “Drone Busters” at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 24. The demonstration allowed Lohmeier to engage directly with 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Airmen and observe how they prepare to detect and counter emerging threats across the theater. by 1st Lt Jacob Willoughby U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Under Secretary of the Air Force Matt Lohmeier visited with U.S. Air Forces EuropeAir Forces Africa and U.S. Space Forces in Europe and Space Forces Africa leadership, Airman and Guardians during an immersion visit at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 24. The visit, which included stops at the USAFEAFAFRICA headquarters, SPACEFOREURAF headquarters, 86th Air Wing, 603rd Air Operations Center, and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, provided an opportunity for Lohmeier to meet with command leaders and subject matter experts, who offered insights on current and future missions, challenges and opportunities. “It’s a true privilege to visit Ramstein and see firsthand all the critical missions they execute in support of our warfighters,” Lohmeier said. “The motivation, service and expertise they display give me confidence our warfighters are ready to fight and win. We, as senior leaders, need to ensure they receive the most technologically advanced capabilities to execute their mission.” He started the day off with a workout session with SPACEFOREUR-AF Guardians and leadership, reinforcing that maintaining physical standards helps ensure military members

are resilient and ready for anything the service demands of them. “Fitness is part of readiness, and leaders have to set that example,” Lohmeier said. “Whether you are at home station, deployed or on the road, taking care of yourself physically helps ensure you are prepared to lead and accomplish the mission.” Then Lohmeier received briefings on command missions and current operations. He

spoke with U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jason T. Hinds, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander, to discuss how the command defends the strategic approaches to the United States and generates airpower across two continents in support of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. “It was extremely valuable to meet with General Hinds to discuss how USAFEAFAFAFRICA protects the U.S. homeland with

our Allies and partners,” Lohmeier said. “It is clear that our forces project combat-ready airpower in Europe, Africa and beyond, deter aggression, and are prepared to win decisively should deterrence fail.” He also joined Airmen and Guardians for a working lunch at the installation dining facility where he heard directly about their mission challenges and successes, offering ongoing leadership support as they work to maintain readiness and a focus on warrior culture. The visit continued with a tour of the Air Defense Operations Center, a first-of-its-kind facility in the Air Force to become operational. The ADOC is designed to detect and counter emerging aerial threats to help subject matter experts build an approach that is catered to those threats and host nation considerations throughout Europe. Lohmeier finished the visit by meeting with U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Christopher Fernengel, SPACEFOREUR-AF commander, to discuss joint warfighting initiatives and integration with other combatant command components. As a rapidly changing warfighting environment unfolds, a shared understanding and collaboration of how space capabilities are planned and employed is critical to the success of the joint force. Lohmeier’s visit is a part of a larger European area of responsibility immersion to engage with Airmen and Guardians throughout the theater. He also recognized multiple members with coining ceremonies for their exemplary service. “Readiness starts with our people,” Lohmeier said. “The professionalism and commitment to readiness from the Airmen and Guardians I met at Ramstein today are exactly what our Air Force needs as we prepare to defeat the threats in theater.”

Under Secretary of the Air Force Matt Lohmeier participates in a physical training session with U.S. Guardians and Airmen at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 24. The session highlighted Lohmeier’s emphasis on fitness as a foundation for readiness, resilience and a warfighter mindset across the Department of the Air Force.

by 1st Lt. Michael Sian 110th Wing Michigan Air National Guard Twenty-one U.S. service members traveled to Germany to participate in a three-week military reserve exchange with the German Armed Forces, Sept. 8-26, strengthening interoperability and building relationships between U.S. and German reserve forces. Participants from the National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve represented Montana, Michigan, Idaho, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Virginia, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, New York and Wisconsin, during the annual exchange. The engagement began in Potsdam, Sept. 8 with a welcome and mission brief from Brig. Gen. Stefan Gruhl, commander, Bundeswehr Joint Force Command Operational Communications Center, emphasizing the importance of this partnership due to ongoing operations in the

European theater. Participants also visited the German Armed Forces Forest of Remembrance, a memorial honoring German service members who died while serving their country. Trees within the memorial grounds have been planted by family members in remembrance of their loved ones. U.S. service members then tested their physical and military skills while completing events associated with the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. Events included a 12-kilometer ruck march, 100meter agility shuttle run, 1,000meter run, 100-meter swim in military uniform, flexed-arm hang, and firearms qualification. Those who successfully met the requirements earned the opportunity to wear the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge on their U.S. military uniforms in accordance with their respective service regulations. Participants also visited the German Army Officer School in

Dresden, where they learned about German military leadership, training, tactics and operations. The exchange gave participants an opportunity to compare approaches and better understand how partner forces train and operate together. “Interoperability begins with understanding. This includes understanding each other’s training, capabilities and ways of operating,” said German Air Force Maj. Silas Scherer, German Air Force basic training staff officer. “This exchange gives participants the opportunity to learn from one another and build the familiarity needed to operate effectively together.” During the final two weeks of the program, participants separated into smaller groups based on their military branch, component and occupational specialties. They joined German units throughout the country, including locations near Munich, Berlin, Nuremberg,

Kiel, and Hamburg, for more specialized exchanges focused on their respective career fields. Activities included observing a joint German-Swiss Air Force helicopter exercise, participating in small-arms tactics and simulator training, unmanned aircraft system training, working with German armored units, conducting aircraft simulator training, and participating in naval ship and damage-control simulator training. The smaller exchanges also provided opportunities for U.S. and German service members to build professional relationships beyond formal training. Outside scheduled military engagements, participants experienced German history and cultural events alongside their hosts. These experiences provided additional opportunities for U.S. and German service members to connect personally, while learning more about their respective cultures.

“The most impactful part of this program is the relationships formed between our U.S. and German reserve service members,” said German Navy Lt. Cmdr. William Lobert, German Armed Forces military reserve exchange program manager. “Those connections make future cooperation easier, because participants leave with a better understanding of their counterparts and professional relationships that continue long after the exchange ends.” The exchange concluded in Frankfurt Sept. 26, where U.S. participants and their German counterparts reunited before departing for their home units. The Military Reserve Exchange Program is an annual program that provides opportunities for U.S. reserve component service members and international partners from various backgrounds to exchange professional knowledge, strengthen military-to-military relationships and improve interoperability between allied forces.

THE HOUSING HYPE

Keeping KMC clean: A resident’s guide to waste disposal, base recycling For American service members and families living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, adapting to life overseas comes with many cultural shifts—including navigating Germany’s strict waste disposal and environmental laws. To maintain community standards and avoid disruptions in municipal services, the KMC Family Housing Office and the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron are reminding all base residents to adhere strictly to proper refuse separation and disposal procedures. Adhering to waste guidelines is not merely a courtesy, but a legal and contractual requirement under host-nation environmental regulations and military housing occupant policies. Understanding refuse systems by housing type Refuse management in KMC Family Housing depends on quarters assignment: » Townhouse Quarters: Residents assigned to townhouses manage dedicated individual bins aligned with scheduled collection days. Yellow bags designated for lightweight plastic, metal, and composite recyclables can be collected at Self-Help stores located in Building 859 on Ramstein or Building 1070 on Vogelweh. Occupants remain responsible for sanitizing their bins and transporting overflow beyond bin capacity directly to a base recycling center. » Stairwell Quarters: Residents in multifamily stairwell units utilize neighborhood in-ground receptacle stations. These underground collection banks feature English-language labeling for proper sorting: » Paper: Flattened cardboard packaging, newspapers, catalogs, and magazines. » Plastic and Packaging: Clean plastics, wrappers, cartons, and metal cans. » Bio-waste: Food scraps, vegetable peelings, and compostable organic material. » Glass: Empty glass bottles and jars. » Residual Trash: Non-recyclable general refuse, sweepings, and hygiene items. Housing officials note that bio-waste and glass receptacles are not co-located at every station. Stairwell occupants can find specialized bio and glass bins situated at street ends near Buildings 1110, 1127, 1137, and 1158. All bags must be deposited entirely inside receptacles. Leaving waste alongside bins attracts wildlife, fosters sanitary hazards, and compromises neighborhood hygiene. Critical Warning: Bulk refuse halts trash collection A persistent challenge across residential areas involves the improper abandonment of bulk household items, old furniture, and hazardous

materials around community dumpsters and inside residential common areas. Leaving bulk waste on or around in-ground container platforms creates a direct safety hazard for the crane equipment used by refuse contractors. When platforms or access routes are obstructed, contractors cannot empty the bins, resulting in suspended trash collection for the entire building. Oversized furnishings, appliances, and hazardous chemicals cannot be left in bike storage rooms, under stairwells, or near neighborhood receptacles. Residents must transport bulk items directly to designated base recycling facilities: » Ramstein Base Recycling Center: Building 2045 (north of the Southside Fitness Center), open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. » Kapaun/Vogelweh Recycling Center: Building 2820 (opposite Vehicle Registration), open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. » Landstuhl Recycling Center: Building 93701 (near Building 3707), open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hazardous materials—such as used motor oil, paints, and automotive fluids—must never be poured down domestic drains or storm sewers. These items are accepted safely at recycling centers. Enforcement and Community Reporting Base housing regulations strictly prohibit unattended personal property in common hallways and stairwells, where items present immediate fire and evacuation hazards. Under KMC Housing policy, improper refuse disposal and unauthorized abandonment of property trigger formal penalties under the established “Three Strikes” infraction process. Violators may incur direct cleanup and hauling charges, and repeated non-compliance can lead to the termination of on-base housing privileges. Additionally, dumping off-base residential waste into military family housing bins is unlawful. Residents who witness unauthorized dumping are asked to record the vehicle’s license plate number and report the incident immediately to Security Forces at DSN 480-2050 (COMM 06371-47-2050). Landstuhl Elementary gifted new American Flag on Constitution Day by Heather L. Scott Department of War Education Activity Communications Army Sgt. 1st Class Francisco Mendez saw a need. The American flag flying high over the elementary school on his installation was faded and starting to tear. Mendez serves in the Medical Readiness Battalion on Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. Army medical center outside of the United States, where Landstuhl Elementary School is also located. “I was here one afternoon shortly after the children brought down the flag at the end of the school day and it was clearly older, and well-loved with a few tears and holes, and immediately I thought we needed to give the school a new flag,” said Mendez. Mendez brought the topic to the attention of his commander, Lt. Col. Christopher Alferez, who wholeheartedly agreed. After speaking with Dr. Mary Bade, LES principal, plans quickly came together for the unit to replace the school’s flag. The flag dedication ceremony took place on Sept. 17. With kindergarten and second grade students, LES families, military partners, and community members surrounding the school’s flagpole, Bade was presented with the gifted flag. She

handed the folded flag to members of the Medical Readiness Battalion color guard, who ceremonially unfurled, secured and raised the new flag. At the ceremony, Alferez posed a poignant question to the students. “What does the American flag mean to you?” Alferez asked. Students responded with answers ranging from observations about the flag’s stars and stripes to thoughtful reflections on freedom, sacrifice, and patriotism. “I wouldn’t want a flag that represents our country and our freedom to be old and worn,” Alferez said. “That’s why it’s important that we respect the flag and why we are here today to do a proper ceremony with our color guard to honor the flag.” The ceremony’s significance was echoed by school leaders, who highlighted the flag’s symbolism and the partnership that made the presentation possible. “We are grateful for this partnership and proud to display this flag as a reminder of the freedoms and opportunities our students enjoy every day,” said Bade. “Our students benefit greatly from seeing firsthand the dedication and service of our military partners. We thank our adopted unit for this generous presentation and for being role models of leadership, service, and citizenship.”

DAF to adopt standardized Religious Affiliation Codes: Action required in vMPF by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Office The Department of the Air Force is updating its personnel data systems to align with the Department of War's standardized list of Religious Affiliation Codes. Starting Sept. 25, the Military Personnel Data System and associated accessions systems have transitioned away from legacy “Faith and Belief Codes.” Airmen and Guardians must take action to update their RAC in the Virtual Military Personnel Flight and certify their Record of Emergency Data is accurate. These mandatory actions must be completed by Oct.16, for active duty

and Nov. 9, for Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard. Airmen and Guardians who fail to update their RAC within this selection window will have their records automatically realigned according to an approved transition construct. “Our commitment to the spiritual readiness and religious freedom of every Airman and Guardian remains steadfast,” said Richard Anderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “Transitioning to these standardized codes ensures our Chaplain Corps has the accurate demographic data they need to provide tailored resources and support to our Service members, while continuing to respect their

individual convictions.” When selecting a religious preference for identification tags (commonly known as “dog tags”), Airmen and Guardians are not limited to choosing from the standardized vMPF list. Members retain flexibility to specify their preference on their ID tags as they see fit. This transition is strictly an administrative measure. Standard i zing the codes improves demographic awareness, helping DAF chaplains better understand the religious composition of their units and optimize resource planning. The change in data codes does not indicate, nor will it result in any reduction or alteration of chaplain services or religious support.

the students got a look at what it means to operate as part of a team on a much larger scale supporting Rapid Global Mobility. “Just how many people are actually involved,” said Daniel Torres, a high school senior and boys team captain. “I guess seeing it in numbers is just kind of mind-boggling.” For some of the students who have grown up in the militaryconnected community around Ramstein, the visit provided a different perspective on the installation and the work taking place behind the scenes. “The level of input that everyone has, like how many jobs are going into it,” said Noelle Murphy, a high school senior and girls team captain. “It’s just really fascinating because it’s a whole other side of things that I didn’t know.” Ella Yost, a high school junior and girls team captain, said the visit provided an opportunity to learn more about a branch of the

military she was less familiar with. “For me, I’m not really familiar with the Air Force, because we’re connected by different branches,” Yost said. “So, to learn more about what goes on in the Air Force is very, very interesting.” During the visit, the students also stepped aboard a static C-17 Globemaster III, giving many of them their first opportunity to see the aircraft from the inside and learn about the different roles that support the air mobility mission. Yost, who is interested in the medical field, said the medical capabilities aboard aircraft particularly caught her attention. “The whole [idea] of having medical personnel on the plane dealing with patients is really cool,” Yost said. “They are able to work in the air, and treat people, and take care of them.” Gavin Griffith, a high school sophomore, said he sees similarities between leadership on a volleyball team and the responsibilities he has observed through his

mother’s military experience. “I think my mom, from what she’s told me, is like a team captain,” Griffith said. “Her job is to help people and take care of her troops.” The Air Force is often described as a “team of teams,” with individuals and organizations working together to accomplish a common mission. The students said they recognized similar principles in their own team environment. “Having to depend on other people and having other people depend on you in order for things to work,” Torres said. “You have to be sure that everyone is doing their job well, and that takes some trust.” Hayden Negrillo-Lopez, a high school senior and boys team captain, said the tight-knit nature of both his team and the Air Force stood out. “We’re all working as a team, we’re all basically a family,” Negrillo-Lopez said. “So if something happens, we’re all trying to do our best to do it together.” Griffith said his mother’s military experience has also exposed him to new opportunities and sparked his interest in becoming a pilot. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to try all these new things because my mom has done a lot,” Griffith said. “It’s actually been really kind of cool, and it has given me an interest in becoming a pilot. That’s my goal in life.” The visit offered students a look at the people, aircraft and teamwork behind Air Force mobility operations, showing them that the teamwork they know on the court also plays out every day across the 521st AMOW.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz strengthens ties with Baumholder community at German-American Oktoberfest by Bernd Mai U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz German-American friendship right here in our community is especially important in these times. In times when there are more problems than solutions, when you don’t know if a friend is still a friend, and when there are more reasons to reflect than to rejoice. Bernd Alsfasser, mayor of the district of Baumholder, emphasized this at the opening of the German-American Oktoberfest on Sept. 25 at the market hall in Berglangenbach. He said this is why he is especially looking forward to this festival, which is not about high-level politics but about friendship, good conversation and having fun at the Bavarian Triathlon. Gingerbread hearts at the entrance, a Bavarian buffet and traditional blue-andwhite decorations set the right atmosphere. Col. Jerry L. Wood, Jr., U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Randy Rivera represented the garrison at the event, with Wood successfully tapping the ceremonial keg on his first try to open the festivities. Tommy Mize, Installation Management Command Europe director, traveled more than an

hour to attend this partnershipbuilding event for the first time. During the event, the crowd enjoyed music by the Böhmischen 6, the excellent hospitality provided by the Berglangenbach Fire Department, and the Bavarian Triathlon competitions, in which mixed German-American teams competed in hammering nails one tap at a time, holding up the beer stein for as long as possible, and downing their glasses. In the end, the winners in the men’s division were Michael DiPietro, Ian McClure, and Michael Williams; in the women’s division, Isabell Pokorny, Christine Johann, and Rachel Rivera. The mayor will invite the winners to a breakfast soon. Over beer, white sausages, pork knuckles, and plenty of good conversation, the approximately 100 invited guests celebrated German-American friendship until shortly before midnight. After Alsfasser’s brief speech, Thomas Johann from the utility company OIE, which co-sponsors the event, and Lutz Altekrüger, mayor of Rückweiler, took the floor - one delivering the German portion, the other the English portion. “The German-American friendship in our region is far more than just a historical legacy,” Johann

began. It is a living partnership, mutual respect, and a sense of community that connects generations. But this friendship does not thrive on words alone. Rather, it thrives on the people who shape it with dedication, passion, and heart and soul. In this context, two men named Bernd were to be honored that evening. “Bernd and Bernd - they’re twins,” joked Altekrüger. He was referring not only to the mayor of the district but also to Bernd Mai, who helped organize the celebration on behalf of the Baumholder Military Community. “You both are outstanding ambassadors of German-American friendship in our region. Your dedication has brought many people together and enriched our community,” Altekrüger said. Both have given a face to German-American friendship. Johann and Altekrüger went into detail about the honorees. Alsfasser, through his extraordinary personal dedication and time, helps ensure that the special spirit of friendship between the two nations is not only preserved but can be experienced anew time and again. “Bernd Alsfasser spares no effort to build bridges and bring people together.” Johann said. commitment goes far beyond what one might expect from a public official. “It is an expression of a deep conviction that friendship, understanding, and solidarity are of inestimable value.” However, German-American friendship in Baumholder and the surrounding region also thrives thanks to people like Bernd Mai, who “often work behind the scenes, yet whose contribution is of inestimable importance.” Johann continued: “His steadfast commitment has played a key

role in ensuring that our community remains characterized by openness, trust, and mutual respect.” His dedication is marked above all by reliability: “He’s simply there when support is needed. He is a point of contact, a friend, and an ambassador all at once.” USAG Rheinland-Pfalz sets, serves and secures the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater. ABC in KMC: Neustadt an der Weinstrasse

Story and photos by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Neustadt an der Weinstrasse is a historic wine town in Rheinland-Pfalz and just a short, but scenic trip from the Kaiserslautern Military Community. It is famous for Hambach Castle, its role as the “heart” of the German Wine Route, and lively wine festivals such as the annual German Wine Harvest Festival that culminates with a festive parade on Oct. 11. Neustadt is a town where history, folklore, and viticulture intertwine. Its cobbled lanes lead past half‑timbered houses, the oldest dating back to the 14th century, and into the lively Marktplatz, where cafés spill onto the square beneath the Gothic towers of the Stiftskirche. Above the town rises Hambach Castle, forever remembered as the cradle of German democracy. Beyond the town, the Palatinate Forest stretches wide, inviting hikers to ruined castles like the Wolfsburg. For those who prefer a slower journey, the nostalgic Kuckucksbähnel steam train chugs up the hill, its wooden carriages rattling gently through the forested valley of the Speyerbach. Neustadt is not only solemn history and wine tradition. The playful Elwedritsche Fountain celebrates the mythical bird of Palatinate folklore, a reminder of the region’s humor and imagination. Here, locals still tell tales of “Elwedritsch hunts,” a lighthearted tradition that has tricked generations of newcomers into chasing shadows in the woods on a full moon night. However, to date not a single Elwedritsche has ever been caught! Cobblestone and historic houses Founded around 1220 and granted city rights in 1275, Neustadt marked its 750th anniversary in 2025. What began as a fortified settlement rooted in viticulture soon flourished into a bustling medieval market

town, and today it stands as one of the most visited historical highlights of RheinlandPfalz. Cobblestone streets, half‑timbered houses, and the Gothic Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) speak of days gone by. The oldest half‑timbered house dates to the year 1337. Specifically, the right-hand section of the building at Hauptstrasse 51 has been dated to that year, making it the earliest surviving timber‑framed structure in the town. Neustadt also preserves about ten further timber-framed houses in narrow alleys dating from the 14th century and even more from the 15th century, making its Altstadt one of the richest ensembles in the state. The Gothic collegiate church from the 14th century dominates the Marktplatz. Its south tower and longhouse are architectural highlights. Whimsical birds According to legend, the Elwedritsch is a folkloric creature often described as a cross between a chicken, duck, and mythical bird. Locals joke about “hunting” Elwedritsche at night with sacks, nets and lanterns. Sculptures of these fantasy birds adorn the fountain, blending humor with tradition. The fountain celebrates regional identity and the playful side of Neustadt’s heritage and has become a popular photo spot for families and friends. Cradle of Democracy Hambach Castle is a symbol of German democracy, the Hambach Festival of 1832 took place here, where thousands demanded freedom and national unity. The castle offers a permanent historic display, a restaurant and a panoramic view of the Rhein valley and surrounding vineyards. www. hambacher-schloss.de Wine heritage and festivals Neustadt is Germany’s second‑largest wine‑producing municipality, with about

2,000 hectares of vineyards along the “Deutsche Weinstrasse.” Every autumn it features the German Wine Harvest Festival with the crowning of the German Wine Queen. The Deutsches Weinlesefest takes place from the end of September to Oct. 12 this year. As soon as the festive season in Bad Dürkheim is over, the next major event about the liquid gold begins in Neustadt and offers you two very special highlights in addition to the large fair and the w.i.n.e.FESTival. The coronation and at the end of the celebrations, numerous traditional and marching groups as well as spectacular floats parade through the city, forming the largest wine parade in all of Germany on Oct. 11. In spring, the almond blossoms beckon visitors onto gentle walks, where tastings of wine and grape juice mark the joyful start of the season. As the year turns, the nostalgic Christmas Market on the main square draws crowds into a swirl of lights, scents, and festive cheer, ushering them warmly into the holiday spirit. Gateway to the Palatinate Forest Hiking trails, medieval fortresses, and nature excursions can be discovered just outside the city. For those not quite so fond of hiking, the “Kuckucksbähnel” is a historic steam railway running from Neustadt through the Palatinate Forest to Elmstein, offering nostalgic rides in century‑old wood-

en carriages. It’s both a heritage attraction and a scenic excursion. Rides take place on Sunday mornings at 10:45 a.m., departing from the main station, usually running from May through October. This year’s last departure is on Oct. 18 and the full journey lasts about 75 minutes. https://eisenbahnmuseum-neustadt.de Neustadt is easily reached by train, though parking can be challenging, especially during major events, and there are special trains during the wine fest. A ride from Kaiserslautern takes about 30 minutes and offers a wonderfully relaxing journey, made even more memorable in autumn, when the Palatinate Forest unfolds in brilliant shades of orange, red, and amber. Fun facts There are 18 cities or towns in Germany called “Neustadt,” which literally translates to “new city.” For anyone from Manchester, New Hampshire, it’s time to get out and acquainted with your nostalgic sister city in Germany! Whether you stroll through the narrow alleys, snap photos at the whimsical Elwedritsche Fountain, linger over a coffee on the bustling market square, join the cheers for the newly crowned Wine Queen, or shop for holiday gifts, Neustadt an der Weinstrasse welcomes visitors with charm and celebration in every season. www.neustadt-weinstrasse.de

Medical Readiness Command – Europe emphasizes readiness, resilience of workforce Story & photo by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe More than 80 military service members and Department of the Army civilians assigned to the Medical Readiness Command - Europe headquarters gathered Friday, Sept. 25, at the Sembach Workforce Development Center for a comprehensive Ready and Resilient Training Day designed to bolster personal wellness and strengthen workplace cohesion. The daylong event provided participants with practical tools spanning communication techniques, team-building exercises,

holistic wealth building, estate planning and long-term retirement strategies. Organizers tailored the curriculum to address both professional collaboration and individual readiness across an increasingly integrated civilianmilitary workforce. “The purpose of the Ready and Resilient Training Day was to provide each member of our team an opportunity for personal growth, to cultivate a culture of trust, and to equip each of us with the skills needed to optimize financial readiness,” said U.S. Army Col. Jeremy Johnson, chief of staff for Medical Readiness Command - Europe.

Workplace dynamics across combined military and civilian organizations often present distinct operational perspectives. Planners structured the sessions specifically to bridge those gaps, fostering interpersonal connections and mutual respect while mitigating potential sources of friction before they affect the command’s mission. “By breaking down cultural and structural silos, our military and civilian personnel learned to address workplace friction proactively, fostering a climate of mutual respect,” said Capt. Benjamin Armstrong, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Medical Readiness Command, Europe. Senior Army leadership has long emphasized that personal

readiness directly underpins operational effectiveness. Throughout the training, instructors highlighted how domestic stability, legal preparedness and financial literacy serve as force multipliers in high-tempo defense environments. “By equipping our team with these communication, legal, and financial tools, we have significantly reduced the personal stressors that distract from the mission, resulting in a far more focused and resilient team,” Armstrong added. Organizational readiness specialists note that proactively addressing professional, domestic and environmental pressures ensure personnel remain mentally agile, financially secure and equipped to sustain demanding operational tempos.

The timing of the training also served a strategic administrative purpose, aligning with the end of the federal fiscal year, a period traditionally characterized by elevated workloads across defense organizations. “Holding this training at the end of the fiscal year provided a critical “tactical pause” to decompress our workforce, build camaraderie, and increase our connectedness as a high-performing team,” added Johnson. The command plans to incorporate lessons learned from the sessions into ongoing professional development and resilience initiatives, reinforcing a workplace culture centered on mutual trust, personal preparedness and sustained mission readiness across the European theater.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center strengthens medical partnership with Czech military hospital Story & photo by Bernhard Lashleyleidner Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — A delegation from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center traveled to the Czech Republic Sept. 23-25 for a bilateral engagement with the Military University Hospital Prague, or UVN, focused on trauma systems, surgical care and long-term medical collaboration between the two nations. UVN is a premier teaching hospital that integrates military and civilian medicine, while providing comprehensive adult health care. Originally established to support the Czech armed forces, the hospital opened its doors to the general public in 1994. Today, UVN employs approximately 7,000 people and operates 700 patient beds, including more than 2,700 active military personnel working alongside civilian staff. “We are incredibly proud to be the very first hospital in Central and Eastern Europe to earn the prestigious Joint Commission International accreditation, said Czech army Col. (Dr.) Radek Pohnan, head of the Department of Surgery.” Building on that commitment to excellence, we were formally designated as a university hospital in 2012. Pohnan said clinical capabilities span a broad range of specialties. “We recently marked a decade of utilizing surgical robotics,” Pohnan said. "Across the spectrum, our core strengths center on trauma and emergency care, neurosurgery and neuro-oncology, cardiology, and comprehensive cancer treatment.” For Col. Claude Burnett, director of LRMC Global Health Engagement team, seeing those capabilities firsthand underscored the value of the growing partnership. “This was a reciprocal visit,” Burnett said, referring to a November visit by a Prague delegation to LRMC. That initial exchange offered an in-depth look at LRMC clinical footprint, laying the groundwork for both sides to improve interoperability, exchange best practices, and identify opportunities for reciprocal professional exchange.” The engagement included introductions between medical professionals from both institutions, as well as two U.S. Army officers representing the United States Embassy Prague. On behalf of the LRMC leadership, U.S. Army Col. Charles Douglas, deputy commanding officer, extended

U.S. Army Col. Charles Douglas, deputy commanding officer, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center addresses representatives from the Military University Hospital Prague or UVN, during a bilateral professional engagement focused on trauma systems, surgical care and long-term medical collaboration between the United States and Czech Republic, Sept. 23-25, in Prague. Organized by LRMC’s Global Health Engagement team, the visit included discussions on strengthening interoperability, sharing best practices, and identifying opportunities for future cooperative training. greetings from LRMC Commander Col. Warren Stewart and emphasized the importance of developing relationships and professional exchanges before a crisis occurs. The United States has long history of working with multinational surgical teams during military operations, he said. For those teams to succeed when lives are at stake, preparation and integration must begin well before deployment. “Knowledge exchange and integration are the absolute keys to our success,” Douglas said. "What we are looking to establish right now are robust observer programs and collaborative initiatives. Understanding each other's clinical practices and specialized skills, especially in trauma, the operating room, and other critical specialties, is something we must actively pursue today, well before we are faced with a largescale conflict.” Douglas said the changing operational environment has prompted LRMC to reassess its medical capabilities and consider how the medical center can adapt to increased demands. “The traditional U.S military medical model has emphasized stabilization at the point of injury followed by movement through established roles of care towards definitive treatment. In a largescale conflict, however, disrupted evacuation timelines could require patients to remain much longer within allied and partner medical systems,” Douglas said. “As our mission expands, we need to adapt and keep this shifting operational

reality in mind as we evaluate how we structure clinical observer programs moving forward.” Czech army Col. Veronika Sedivcova, deputy director of the Military Medicine Division of the Czech Ministry of Defense, said the Czech military and UVN face many of the same challenges. “Implementing these changes will take time because we aren't just working within our Ministry of Defense; we also have to coordinate across our nation public health care system,” Sedivcova said. “Fortunately, our civilian partners are incredibly eager to collaborate with us.” She also highlighted joint readiness exercises conducted with allied nations as an example of existing cooperation. Sedivcova said aligning clinical procedures, medical infrastructure, and support networks will be critical to improving interoperability among allied medical systems. Burnett agreed, saying the challenge extends beyond clinical care to systems that support patient movement and sustainment. “Across our Allies and partners, we frequently discuss the need to improve standardization and interoperability,” Burnett said. “Our medical systems do not always communicate or integrate as effectively as they need to during exercises, and those gaps could become significantly more consequential in a crisis or conflict.” Burnett said medical interoperability extends beyond the care delivered inside a hospital to

include the systems that move, support and sustain patients across the continuum of care. “Interoperability is also about everything that surrounds patient care – patient movement, blood management, mass-casualty response and the other supporting systems that allow us to work together,” Burnett said. “Those are practical areas where we need to better understand one another’s processes, identify gaps and improve alignment.” Sedivcova said patient evacuation and medical stabilization remain significant challenges among NATO allies because of differences in national laws and medical systems. “The number one thing is how you evacuate your patients,” Sedivcova said. “Medical is a priority, and to get all nations within NATO to implement this, especially with all the different national laws, is not easy.” The delegations also discussed differences in medical education and professional staff credentialing among nations. Burnett said those differences must be reconciled in a manner that facilitates clinical interoperability to meet the demands of modern warfare. “In our past operations, our training and immediate interventions were heavily focused on penetrating trauma, severe burns, and combat amputations,” Douglas said. “However, what we are seeing in current conflicts is a stark shift. The use of the advanced weapon systems and heavy artillery is resulting in an unprecedented volume of traumatic brain injuries that require entirely different clinical approaches.” Douglas said allied medical facilities must also prepare for the logistical challenges associated with a large-scale, high-intensity conflict. “We have to anticipate that once casualties begin flowing through the evacuation chain, we will be forced to manage a heavy, unregulated flow of patients,” Douglas said. “This means handling high volumes of casualties arriving at our facilities without prior coordination or electronic tracking.” He said traditional evacuation timelines could also be disrupted, potentially requiring patients to remain in local medical facilities for extended periods. “In a large-scale scenario, we may not see patients evacuated back to Landstuhl for weeks or even months” Douglas said. "Because of this delay, we have to critically examine the gaps we are not cur-

rently addressing in our systems, and we must plan for a reality where the vast majority of our patients will need to be sustained and treated in local partner hospitals near the front lines.” Burnett said improving medical interoperability does not require allied health systems to become identical. Instead, the immediate objective is to better understand how each system operates, identify differences that could affect patient care or movement during combined operations, and determine where greater alignment is both necessary and achievable. “Every nation operates within its own legal, regulatory and clinical framework,” Burnett said. “Those differences cannot simply be standardized away. What we can do is understand one another systems, identify where those differences create operational friction, and work together on practical solutions.” He said reciprocal observer ships provide a realistic starting point. “We can build trust, exchange clinical knowledge and become more familiar with how our respective systems function now, before we are asked to work together during a crisis,” Burnett said. “That is a practical step toward greater interoperability.” Pohnan emphasized the importance of sharing clinical experience among NATO allies and partners. “We believe wholeheartedly in the power of sharing hard-won clinical experience,” Pohnan said. “It is absolutely vital to our mission, especially when it comes to maintaining seamless combat interoperability alongside our NATO allies.” U.S. Army Master Sgt. Crystal Pulido, senior enlisted leader to the chief of nursing officers and deputy commander for patient caring services at LRMC, highlighted that the three-day engagement with the UVN delegates was, especially the way they have integration stateof-the-art technology and realistic training models, “Seeing the UVN team's clinical excellence firsthand from highfidelity tactical stress simulations to advanced robotic surgeries completely redefined what allied integration looks like in practice,” Pulido said. “It is very comforting to know that we have worldclass medical partners standing shoulder to shoulder with us, ready to provide top-notch care under all circumstances along with their commitment, creativity, and professionalism is absolutely amazing.”

Created to honor Hope’s legendary dedication to uplifting American troops across five decades of service both inside and outside combat zones, the award serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy of service. To qualify for the accolade, recipients must epitomize the foundational values that defined Hope’s lifework: duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity and selfless dedication. Honorees must also demonstrate an extraordinary commitment of time, talent or resources to benefit the armed forces community. “Dr. John Casey exemplifies the timeless values celebrated by Bob Hope—duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity, and dedication,” said U.S. Army Col. Jeremy Johnson, chief of staff for Medical Readiness Command – Europe. “By championing initiatives that measurably improve

the readiness and well-being of the force, Dr. Casey has fundamentally enhanced the quality of life for our servicemembers and their families.” Senior leaders also praised Casey for exemplifying selfless service, emphasizing that his work directly enhances the day-to-day resilience of forces operating in demanding overseas environments. “Receiving the Spirit of Hope Award is an immense honor, but it represents the collective mission of our entire medical readiness team,” Casey said. “Ensuring that our service members and their families have the support and care they deserve is a commitment we uphold every single day.” The Department of War presents the award annually on behalf of the service branches, recognizing select military and civilian personnel. Previous recipients of the Spirit of Hope Award include actor Gary Sinise, the late country and western singer, Toby Keith and TV chef Robert Irvine.

HUSSAR SABER from Page 1 station at Ramstein Air Base. “We’re able to pack a lot of training into these two weeks,” Morin said. “We’re accomplishing the mission while also knocking out certifications and annual requirements that we need to get done.” Due to the off-station nature of the training, Airmen in the squadron strengthened their ability to execute the mission away from their home station, thereby enhancing operational readiness and resilience with a NATO ally. “Being away from home station gives our Airmen the experience of going through the entire process, from the brief and mission planning, to execution and the debrief,” Morin said. “It’s training we just can’t replicate in the same way at home.” This experience was especially meaningful for U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Carter Wilson, 37th AS loadmaster, and one of the squadron’s newer Airmen. As a young Airman, Hussar Saber 26-4 marked Wilson’s first training event of this scale away from Ramstein. Flying frequently with the same crew strengthened his ability to learn, proficiency in core tasks and his communication skills in and out of the aircraft. “Being out here, you’re flying every day and building chemistry with your crew,” Wilson said. “You get comfortable working together, and that makes you better at the job.” The repetition in core tasks strengthened his ability to translate classroom training into hands-on experience. “You can study the numbers, procedures and rules, but there’s a lot of the job you have to experience firsthand,” Wilson said. “Being out here and doing it every day gives you that hands-on feel and a taste of what it’s like to operate away from home station.” Loadmasters play critical roles throughout any airlift mission, from preparing and securing cargo before takeoff to coordinating with pilots and managing airdrop operations in flight. During Hussar Saber 26-4, those responsibilities were exercised alongside U.S. and Polish personnel in an environment designed to increase coordination between the forces. Training outside the normal home-station routine also meant additional planning and communication between the front and back of the aircraft, as well as with personnel on the ground. “When we’re doing things that we don’t normally do or getting people certified on something they

haven’t done before, there’s another level of coordination,” Morin said. “You have more pre-briefs, more communication between the flight deck and the back of the aircraft, and more coordination with the ground teams, including our Polish partners.” The partnership took on a personal dimension for the U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Natalia Skolyszewski, 37th AS loadmaster, whose Polish heritage provided an additional capability to the exercise. Skolyszewski’s parents are from Poland, and she grew up speaking Polish. During Hussar Saber 26-4, she used her language skills to assist with mission coordination, communicating with Polish air traffic control personnel and helping the team work through flight-plan changes and other operational requirements. “It’s really rewarding to be able to use something that’s part of my background in a strategic setting,” Skolyszewski said. “Normally, speaking Polish is something I use with my family. Here, I’m able to use it to directly support the mission.” Her ability to communicate in Polish helped reduce a potential language barrier while allowing U.S. and Polish personnel to coordinate more efficiently. “It’s pretty cool to be able to speak directly with professionals in the Polish military in their own language and know that I’m helping my team at the same time,” Skolyszewski said. The experience also reinforced the importance of building relationships between Allied forces before they are needed in a realworld operation. “Working with our Allies and maintaining those relationships is really important,” Skolyszewski said. “We work together, so having that personal connection makes it easier to understand each other and operate as a team.” Exercises such as Hussar Saber provide opportunities to establish familiarity and trust while developing the practical skills required to operate together. “Integrating with our partner nations is extremely important,” Morin said. “We do these exercises year after year, and it’s really rewarding to see those relationships grow and the connections we’ve built with our partners.” Hussar Saber 26-4 gave the squadron another opportunity to train as it would fight, away from home station, alongside NATO partners and prepared to rapidly respond when called upon.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, host nation partners complete flagship restoration project

Jürgen Köhler, Rhine-Moselle Federal Forestry Office director, and Dr. Anja Gross, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DPW Environmental Division chief, unveil one of two informational signs that detail the military history and ecological transformation of the former “Rod and Gun Club” small-arms range in Oftersheim, Sept. 17.

Story & photos by Adriana Lambrecht U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz USAG Rheinland-Pfalz and host nation partners celebrated the successfully completed restoration of the former “Rod and Gun Club” smallarms shooting range in Oftersheim, Germany, on Sept. 17. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Direc to rate of Public Works Environmental Chief, Dr. Anja Gross, and project lead, Johannes Haid, unveiled the site during a ceremonial dedication of the new informational signs together with representatives of the Federal Forest Division of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks and the City of Oftersheim. The joint project between the Federal Forest Division of BImA, the Heidelberg State Building Authority and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz focused on completely dismantling the former military infrastructure and paving the way for a species-rich nature conservation area. “Where military training operations took place for decades, nature is now gradually reclaiming the area,” emphasized Jürgen Köhler, director of the Rhine-Moselle Federal Forestry Office, during the dedication ceremony. He added that the successful soil remediation and complete decommissioning demonstrate how formerly contaminated conversion sites can be sustainably repurposed for nature conservation. From 1971 to 2013, USAG Heidelberg operated the small-arms range for handguns and smallcaliber weapons at the Oftersheim site in Baden-Württemberg. When USAG Heidelberg merged into USAG Rheinland-Pfalz in 2013, the new command assumed responsibility for the Rod and Gun Club property. To satisfy U.S. Army compensation obligations to Germany requiring the military to dismantle decommissioned installations whenever it builds new regional facilities, BImA re-naturalized the former Rod and Gun Club by remediating soil, clearing unexploded ordnance, and demolishing all buildings, shooting ranges, and paved roads. Focusing

on these defunct properties under BImA control spares active U.S. installations from disruptive offset projects. Ultimately, this former shooting range secured a uniquely large, high-quality compensation area to fulfill the Army's environmental obligations. The large-scale flagship project spanned nearly a decade of planning and execution. The project’s success underscores the partnership and collaboration between USAG Rheinland-Pfalz and host nation partners. “We would like to thank USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, who made this possible in an exemplary manner and with a tremendous financial investment,” Köhler said. Susanne Barisch, director of the Oftersheim Building Authority, agreed: “I truly appreciate what has been accomplished here on the ground, and I want to express my very sincere thanks for making this

project such a success.” For Johannes Haid, project lead with the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DPW Environmental Division, the milestone was personal. After having worked on the upkeep of the installation, it was difficult to watch it fall apart and rot away, he remembered. He expressed that he is personally delighted that the project has come to a more than worthy conclusion, having created a beautiful little corner of nature in Oftersheim. The newly unveiled information panels now offer visitors insights into the site’s military history as well as its ecological transformation. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz sets, serves, and secures the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater. Connect with USAG RheinlandPfalz: https://linktr.ee/usag_rp

Air Force reservist leads joint team during NATO pentathlon in Romania by Elizabeth Easterling 919th Special Operations Wing An Air Force Reservist helped lead a joint three-member U.S. military team to a third-place finish in the novice division at the 2026 International Confederation of Reserve Officers Military Competition in Bucharest, Romania. Air Force Lt. Col. Lance Speed was part of an elite contingent of 18 American reserve service members representing the Air Force Reserve Command and Army Reserve Command, who competed against 37 teams of 119 competitors from 14 NATO member states. The military pentathlon tested participants across five demanding combat disciplines: combat marksmanship, a land obstacle course, a water obstacle course, utility hand grenade throwing accuracy and a military orientation march. To prepare for the high-intensity event, Speed completed a 15-day overseas mission that began with a week of intensive interoperability training alongside Greek partners at the Hellenic Army Academy in Athens, Greece. The team then traveled to Romania for two days of weapons familiarization on foreign defense platforms, including live-fire training with the AK-47 rifle and the TT-30 pistol. Speed, who is assigned to the 919th Special Operations Wing, said his background as an air advisor gave him a strong appreciation for building relationships with international partners. He was drawn to the event’s professional development and unique allied environment.

“I was interested in the opportunity to challenge myself, develop professionally and learn alongside competitors from other organizations and nations,” Speed said. “This competition is a great chance to strengthen those connections, exchange perspectives and learn from our partners.” Competing on a joint team alongside one fellow Air Force Reservist and one Army Reservist, Speed’s team showcased outstanding tactical capability by placing in the top four in five of the competition’s seven scored categories. The joint team ultimately secured the highest novice team shooting score, the highest novice precision hand grenade score and logged the

third-fastest water obstacle course transit time in their division. His standout achievements earned high praise back home from his leaders at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. “Lance is a great representative of the quality of people we have in our squadron,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Joseph Hurley, Speed’s squadron commander. “His professionalism and discipline are evident in both his commitment to physical fitness and his day-to-day work. His results in Romania come as no surprise to those of us who work with him, and I am proud of how he represented the wing.” Speed said the team’s joint nature was one of the most rewarding aspects of the mission. “I really enjoyed working with our Air Force and Army Reserve counterparts and learning from

the broad range of civilian and military backgrounds represented on the team,” he said. “It was great to step outside the environ-

ment at [Eglin’s] Duke Field and share the experience with teammates from across the joint force. Just as relationships with our international partners contribute to success, connections and mutual understanding within the joint environment [are] invaluable.” Ultimately, representing the citizen air commandos of the 919th Special Operations Wing and the nation on an international stage was a responsibility Speed did not take lightly. “It is a meaningful responsibility and such a privilege,” he said. “I am mindful that many people from the 919th Special Operations Wing have represented the organization before me and helped establish its strong reputation. I see it as an opportunity to represent the professionalism, preparation and commitment of the people and organizations I work with. It is also an opportunity to represent Team USA in a positive way, building friendships with our international partners and connecting on a personal level outside of an operational environment.”

HALLOWEEN from Page 1 Satzvey Castle in the Eifel region

don’t have to look far. The country hosts a wide range of events for couples, families and singles. Here are five places to start!

3. Burg Satzvey Halloween Located 2.5 hours north of Kaiserslautern, the Eifel castle of Burg Satzvey is an excellent place for a Halloween adventure. This is the way to do Halloween, a little in advance of Halloween (on Oct. 24 and Oct. 31, this year). Families are welcome in the early afternoon for some “less scary” fun. But when the sun goes down at 6 p.m., the good

2. MoviePark Horror Fest If you’re looking for an immersive experience for Halloween, then MoviePark Horror Fest is the place to be throughout October and into early November. Located north of Essen about 3.5 hours from Kaiserlslautern, the typically family friendly park will be transformed into Horrorwood studios. Expect to be besieged by monsters, zombies and other gruesome creatures as night falls over the park. The park has hosted Horror Fest for more than 20 years, and this year’s event features its famous horror labyrinth (tickets are required). Afterwards you can take a calm nap at the local horror hostel, unless flesh-eating monsters find you first, that is. The park offers its own special accommodation for the event.

1. Frankenstein Halloween at Burg Königstein Germany’s legendary Frankenstein Halloween has found a suitably spooky new home. After more than four decades at Burg Frankenstein, the event moved to the imposing ruins of Burg Königstein in the Taunus while its original castle undergoes extensive renovations. From Oct. 16 through Nov. 1, the centuries-old castle transforms into a “Kingdom of Darkness,” with vampires, zombies, werewolves, witches, horror clowns and other creatures lurking throughout a series of scare zones. Live shows and plenty of interaction with costumed monsters add to the experience, and the sprawling medieval ruins provide an atmospheric backdrop after dark. Frankenstein Halloween takes place Oct. 16–18, 23–25 and Oct. 30–Nov. 1. Friday and Saturday events run from 6–11 p.m., while Sundays offer an earlier experience from 1–6 p.m. Tickets include parking and shuttle transportation to the castle, as well as travel within the RMV public transportation network.

Burg Frankenstein

(and more scary) times begin. Visitors are greeted by a spectral figure who haunts the lake outside the castle. It gets better inside. Mazes, monsters, jump scares, the works. Afterward, there’s an outstanding party that lasts almost until November. If you act soon enough, you might even be able to book a room in the castle. 4. Halloween at Europa Park Europa Park is one of Germany’s

best amusement parks. Located just a little more than 2 hours away from Kaiserslautern, it also boasts an amazing Halloween scene. The park has an excellent blend of both light and heavy Halloween scenes. Pumpkins and hay bales abound. So day strange masked creatures, and goblins, and vampires, and… well, you should go see for yourself. During the Halloween Season (Oct. into early Nov.), the park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit

https://www.europapark.de/en/ theme-park/info/plan-your-visit/ eerily-beautiful-halloween-europa-park for ticket information. 5. Halloween at Burg Spangenberg For a Halloween celebration close to Kaiserslautern, head into the Pfälzerwald to Burg Spangenberg. On Oct. 31, the medieval castle gets into the spirit with spooky decorations, creepy

food and drinks, costumes, and plenty of Halloween atmosphere. The fun begins at noon, with free face painting for kids starting at 2 p.m. Castle tours at 4 and 6 p.m. offer visitors another way to explore the centuries-old fortress, which is plenty atmospheric even before the ghosts, zombies, witches and trolls arrive. Costumes are encouraged, making this an easy Halloween day trip for families from the KMC area!
