by Tech. Sgt. Timothy Hayden 406th Air Expeditionary Wing
The average age of a U.S. service member is just 28 years old. Chief Master Sgt. Patrick O’Connor has been in uniform longer than most of today’s military has been alive.
After nearly four decades of continuous service — first as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army and later as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in the Air Force Reserve — O’Connor is now completing his final deployment as a senior enlisted leader with the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing in Germany.
Though his time in uniform nears its end, his example of leadership, mentorship and quiet professionalism will carry forward.
“The most important choice a leader makes is the choice to serve, and Chief’s 39 years of service is a testament to that,” said Lt. Col. Justin Krowicki, 406th AEW director of operations and plans. “I’ve had the privilege of serving with Chief at various stages of my career — first as an EOD technician during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and now again as a lieutenant colonel. Throughout it all, he has been someone I’ve sought out for guidance and mentorship.”
O’Connor enlisted in 1986, inspired by a family legacy of service. His father served during the Korean War and his uncle in the Air Force, while his grandmother kept their framed portraits — one in black and white, one in color — on the wall.
His first assignment was as a combat engineer, MOS 12B, with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York. Trained to lay minefields, breach obstacles and build bridges, he quickly gained firsthand experience supporting infantry units in challenging conditions.
“The demolition work was incredible,” he said. “But we were constantly in the field supporting infantry units — especially with our M60 machine guns. It was tough. Still, I learned what it meant to be part of a team that enabled movement and momentum in combat.”
Later, he cross-trained into the 12F tracked vehicle crewman role, where he operated specialized tanks such as the Armored Vehicle-Launched Bridge — a turretless, 60-foot bridge-launching platform designed to support maneuver operations on the battlefield.
After completing his active-duty Army enlistment in July 1990, O’Connor returned home to New Jersey — but just days later, he was recalled as a reservist in support of Operation Desert Storm. Assigned to a training battalion at Fort Dix, he prepared
soldiers for deployment but found the work unfulfilling.
“I didn’t get much satisfaction from it,” he said. “I actually tried to switch services again — the Marines and Navy weren’t taking prior-service at the time. But a former infantry officer told me the Air Force Reserve was looking for EOD techs. That conversation changed everything.”
O’Connor officially joined the Air Force Reserve in April 1996 and retrained into the explosive ordnance disposal career field.
He recalled an earlier encounter with an EOD technician during his time at Fort Drum, when a dud-fired round needed to be safely detonated.
“He showed up in shorts and a sweatshirt — no uniform — and told me I wasn’t cool enough to blow it up myself,” said O’Connor.
“He said I had to go to EOD school. So I did.”
That moment set the course for the rest
of his military service. Over the next two decades, O’Connor deployed multiple times, led critical response missions and mentored junior Airmen through one of the most technically demanding and dangerous specialties in the Air Force.
“My progression was built on doing my job well, every time,” he said. “In both services, that’s what got me ahead — that and education.”
O’Connor earned an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force, followed by a bachelor’s degree, all while continuing to serve. Along the way, he completed rigorous training, developed his leadership skills and steadily rose through the enlisted ranks.
He credits much of his growth to the mentors who helped guide him. In the Army, it was Staff Sgt. Jimmy Clavin, who he said kept him on track. In the Air Force, it was Senior
Master Sgt. Barry Smith, who encouraged him through EOD school and taught him how to approach complex scenarios.
He also drew motivation from being overlooked for opportunities in the Army due to his career field. Despite being selected for and excelling in pre-Ranger School courses, he was not eligible to attend the actual course because he was not infantry. After Desert Storm, he went on to graduate from the Army’s Sapper Leader Course — a demanding school for combat engineers.
“Like the Air Force, the Army had its own culture,” he said. “Sometimes you had to work twice as hard to get half the recognition, but you kept going. You learned to lead by example.”
Today, as he finishes his final deployment, O’Connor applies those same lessons in his role as a senior enlisted leader.
“This is a profession — not just a job,” he said. “It’s a calling. You don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room, just the most dependable. The Air Force is a meritocracy — if you apply yourself, the system works.”
According to Krowicki, that example is still visible every day.
“Chief is at a point in his career where he could easily phone it in, but he doesn’t,” Krowicki said. “He’s still one of the first in and last out. Most nights, I see him out running more than 10 miles to set an example for the Airmen under him. You don’t often get the chance to serve with someone who brings that level of experience and commitment — and still raises his hand to deploy. It’s a privilege to serve alongside him overseas.”
Outside of uniform, O’Connor works as a physical scientist with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There, he leads a team developing and testing advanced explosive detection systems used in airport screening and other transportation environments. His work involves supporting live explosive testing on retired aircraft to refine detection thresholds and improve public safety — a role that blends his military experience with his scientific training.
O’Connor is married with two sons — one a recent college graduate and the other entering his junior year. Though he has not finalized post-retirement plans, he is considering a shift to private industry or teaching at the college level.
With 39 years of continuous military service behind him, O’Connor offered a final message to the next generation of Airmen.
“Life isn’t fair, and it’s not easy,” he said. “But a positive mental attitude and a strong wingman can take you far. Don’t walk alone — you don’t need to.”
The health and safety of our residents is a top concern for the KMC Housing Office. Our commitment to you is to provide our housing residents with a safe living environment. In Germany, mold can often be found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. The catalyst that all mold needs is moisture. As such, you are most likely to encounter mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.
Identifying the presence of mold early is critical. Often, it will appear as fuzz or dust on surfaces. Even hard surfaces, such as dressers, appliances, and shelves can develop mold. Be sure to inspect vertical surfaces (walls, sides of dressers, etc.) when cleaning for mold. Also, musty odors may be an indication of mold and should be further investigated by a visual inspection. Unfortunately, and too often, mold
is left unattended, and it flourishes and spreads before anything is done to remove it.
So, what can you do? Prevention is the easiest way to control mold. Limiting the amount of moisture using exhaust fans, proper ventilation and routine cleaning will greatly reduce the chances of mold.
What do I do if I have mold in my house?
If living on-base, you can call the MFH Maintenance Contractor (Vectrus 06371 463 9510). If you live off-base, you should immediately talk with your Landlord if you suspect mold growth in your home.

The assessment is a major step forward in USAFE-AFAFRICA’s efforts to determine aerial defense needs and pave the way for shared and fine-tuned aerial defense architecture for the U.S. and its Allies and partners.
These efforts align with the Pentagon’s recent directive to advance counter-unmanned aer-
ial systems capabilities, as well as USAFE-AFAFRICA’s operational focus area of Integrated Air and Missile Defense.
“Countering unmanned aerial systems is a constantly evolving field. Our job is to ensure that we’re evolving with it,” said Lt. Col. William Singletary, USAFE-AFAFRICA Integrated Air and Missile Defense Division. “Regular assessments with

our partner nations ensure that we have the right agencies, equipment, and procedures in place to defend the base against any threat at any time.”
Over the four-day point defense assessment, U.S. and German Air Forces worked together to respond to simulated UAS threats through a “kit” of integrated equipment, tactics and personnel with the goal
of assessing command and control capabilities in sensing, identifying, locating and countering hostile UASs, strengthening local security.
Also in attendance were Rheinland-Pfalz Police observers looking to advance their own antiair threat capabilities for the local community.
“The outstanding cooperation that has existed for decades between the U.S. armed forces and the Rheinland-Pfalz police at all levels has been further strengthened by the current form of collaboration, said Thomas Welsch, Department of the Inspector of Police, Rheinland-Pfalz Police.
By sharing resources and expertise, U.S. and German officials will continue to protect both civil and military infrastructure across the region.
“Mutual trust and an unwavering willingness to provide support are the key to addressing future common challenges in defense and security policy,” continued Welsch.
“I am grateful that the commitment to a partnership-oriented cooperation remains unbroken.”

In support of the Department of the Air Force “Culture of Fitness” initiative, the Air Force unveiled changes to its Physical Fitness Assessment and a new fitness program, which will apply to Total Force Airmen.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the Air Force will pause all PFA testing to facilitate the transition to the updated program. The Air Force will then begin testing Airmen on the new PFA standards on March 1, 2026, with the release and implementation of the revised AFMAN 36-2905.
From March 1, 2026, through Aug. 31, 2026, all fitness tests will be diagnostic to provide Airmen time to adapt to the new standards.
Beginning Sept. 1, 2026, the Air Force will resume official, scored testing under the new PFA standards.
“These fitness changes are about having a healthy, ready force prepared to meet today’s mission and the demands of the future fight,” said U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin. “The updated model reflects our high standards for fitness and ensures our Airmen have the tools they need

to protect their long-term health.”
The new PFA reimplements the scored body composition component using the current Waist-toHeight Ratio program and introduces a two-mile run. Additionally, service members will be required to take the PFA every six months regardless of their score. The updated scored components, to include body composition, and increased testing frequency introduce a more challenging physical fitness assessment to better gauge the fitness of the force.
The updated PFA features a 100point scoring system across four categories:
• Cardiorespiratory (50)
• Waist-to-Height Ratio (20)
• Muscle Strength (15)
• Muscle Core Endurance (15)
All alternate exercises for cardiovascular, strength and endurance components remain an option for Airmen during their PFA; however, Airmen will be required to perform a two-mile run during at least one PFA every 365 days.
Active-Duty members can complete the body composition measurement up to five days before their PFA. Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard members may
complete their body composition component during their drill period prior to their PFA. All members retain the option to take their body composition measurement during the PFA, but that is not mandatory.
To better foster a culture of fitness across the force, installation commanders may now direct units to conduct mass testing for PFAs twice per year on the following cycles:
Cycle 1 – September to March
Cycle 2 – March to September
In addition to the PFA updates, the DAF is releasing “The Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook,” which provides guidance to Airmen and Guardians reinforcing the service’s efforts to ensure service members safely, healthily and effectively meet fitness and readiness standards.
“The Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook” is an adaptive and agile resource for Airmen and Guardians for implementing fitness and lifestyle management programs to include sleep and nutritional tips, and exercise and fitness guidance. This toolkit emphasizes how physical fitness is essential for service members to meet and exceed the demands for airpower through
strength and stamina and provides a comprehensive guide for Airmen to reach and maintain a high level of physical fitness.
This change augments the DAF’s approach to fitness, building a more ready and resilient force by empowering Airmen to prioritize
their health and encourage excellent performance.

U.S. Army Capt. Tyler Sprunger, an Army Medical Service Corps officer and son of retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Sprunger, former command sergeant major for U.S. Army Medical Command, is carving his own distinguished path in the Army. He is building upon a legacy of service while forging his own identity. Sprunger is currently assigned to Medical Readiness Command, Europe Headquarters where he is a health facility planner.
After graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Michigan State University, and commissioning through the ROTC program, Sprunger chose the Army over the Navy or Air Force. “To be honest, there was no chance of me ever joining the Navy,” added Sprunger. “The thought of being stuck at sea on a ship for months at a time, or in a submarine, is not my idea of a good time.”
While his mother favored him joining the Air Force and being in the air versus on the ground fighting in combat, Sprunger found himself more drawn to the Army.
Born Feb. 20, 1993, at Gorgas Army Hospital in Panama City, Panama, Sprunger spent his early childhood as an “Army brat,” living in Panama, North Carolina, and Michigan.
“My Army Brat experience is not what I would call standard,” said Sprunger. “My parents divorced when I was young, so I spent most of my time with my mother growing up. While I credit my mother for being the person I am today, my dad will say the same thing and has done so in public forums.”
Despite the physical distance from his father growing up, Sprunger always knew he wanted to work in healthcare. “Healthcare was always my passion, in whatever capacity that meant. Even though my father was a very successful noncommissioned officer in Army Medicine, it had no influence on my decision to join the Medical Service Corps,” added Sprunger.
In 2012, between his freshman and sophomore years in college, Sprunger attended The U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
“Unfortunately, my father was not able to attend my graduation from jump school, so he arranged for a fellow command sergeant major to pin on my wings. It was a moment that we are all proud of,” said Sprunger.
As Sprunger progressed in his military career, he initially resisted seeking his father’s advice, wanting to establish himself independently.
“I wanted to ‘pave my own path’ and ‘rise in the ranks on my own merits’,” added Sprunger.
However, Sprunger later realized the value and wisdom of his father’s military experience.
“Now that I have a few years in the Army under my belt, I would have made few changes to my mindset,” Sprunger said. “First,

just simply asking questions of my father would have gone a long way to understanding the Army and the situations I found myself in.”
A turning point came when Sprunger served as an aide-decamp to retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael Talley. It just so happened that Sprunger’s father had also worked with Talley in a previous assignment.
“As fate would have it, my dad and I ended up being stationed near each other in Maryland, so we ended up rooming together,” added Sprunger. “During that time, we were able to reestablish that father/ son connection that had been missing for many years. We would sort of debrief each other at the end of the day and talk about what was going on at work. We were able to give each other advice and support. And that is something I will always cherish.”
When asked what special advice or guidance his father gave him growing up, Sprunger said, “My dad told me to get up every day and be excellent, but in more colorful words that I cannot repeat.”
While Sprunger’s journey is unique and reflects a commitment to military service and a desire for personal and professional growth, it also renewed a deep sense of appreciation for his family. And that is something Sprunger will be forever grateful for.

The 435th Construction and Training Squadron hosted a ceremony celebrating their 75th anniversary at the CTS compound, Sep. 19.
The squadrons’ legacy began in 1950 as the 7329th Labor Service Unit comprised of only civilians.
“With its original home at Rhein Main Air Base, and what is now Frankfurt Airport, the 7329th was initially tasked to support construction at Rhein Main AB,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Cagle, 435th Construction and Training Squadron commander. “But soon the unit was tasked to support construction efforts at Landstuhl Air Base and Ramstein Air Base.”
The organization’s original home was at Rhein Main Air Base, which is now Frankfurt Airport. While initially tasked to support construction at Rhein Main Air Base, the unit was eventually tasked to support construction efforts at Landstuhl Air Base and Ramstein Air Base.
“While working at Landstuhl and Ramstein, the all-civilian 7329th was billeted, initially in tents, right here on the same plot of land as our compound,” said Cagle. “By 1953, the 7329th was permanently reassigned to Ramstein and the compound that we know today began to take shape with more permanent infrastructure being built, some of which still stands.”
By 1971, an aircraft arresting system depot was established with active-duty Airmen assigned to operate it. Then in 1979, a training mission was assigned to the unit with additional active-duty Airmen assigned to deliver contingency skills training to others.
“By this point, the three missions that we know today had been assigned to the squadron; construction, training, and aircraft arresting system depot,” said Cagle. “No other squadron in the United States Air Force has those three missions and, in that way, CTS truly is a ‘one-of-kind’ organization.”
For the last 75 years, the 435th CTS has undertaken a multitude of construction projects spanning Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Handling everything in-house, from initial planning and design, to sourcing materials, maintaining construction equipment, and deploying resources to remote project sites; this unit has built airfields and completed airfield markings using its own dedi-

cated personnel and equipment.
The squadron also has a team of instructors that have provided contingency skills training to thousands of combat support Airmen across the total force on how to operate in a contingency environment.
“In the Depot, our team ensures safety of flight in this theater by overhauling BAK-12 systems for USAFE main operating bases,” said Cagle. “We posture and deploy mobile aircraft arresting systems to support named exercises, emergencies, and real-world contingencies.”
These mix of mission sets make the 435th CTS a unique entity in the Air Force. With military and civilian personnel from the Engineer, Force Support, Contracting, Logistics, Finance, and Communications communities, that are spread across eight flights, develops a wide range of solutions.
“No other squadron in the U.S. Air Force has a construction, training, and depot mission,” said Cagle. “Only CTS has all three in
one organization.”
And while mission is unique, the most important part of the squadron are the people.
“The members of this squadron show a special kind of teamwork, partnership, and problem-solving ability that I haven’t seen elsewhere,” said Cagle. “To me, this speaks to a kind of deep-rooted commitment and loyalty to mission, organization, and to each other, akin to the way that a family operates. That is the thing that makes this squadron special, the 435 CTS is a family.”
The impact felt on the mission from accomplished by the 435th CTS was highlighted by the 435th Contingency Response Group commander, Col. Damon Field.
“The 435th CTS enhance the resilience, efficiency, safety and overall operational capability of this theater,” said Field. “In other words, the professionals at the 435th Construction and Training Squadron make deterrence in Europe a reality.”

An Army marches on its stomach, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and Army Food Program understand this well. Recently, the 405th AFSB’s food service team conducted a Food Service Management Board in conjunction with a community food show.
To better provide a valuable avenue for the exchange of information between leaders, food service personnel, food service managers, prime vendors and supporting agencies, the 405th AFSB conducted a professional forum in conjunction with a community food show at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh in Kaiserslautern Sep. 16-18.
Chaired by the 405th AFSB’s food service team and following an ice breaker, social and teambuilding event Sept. 16, the FSMB kicked off the morning of Sept. 17. In attendance were over 60 leaders, managers and food service professionals.
In addition to the 405th AFSB and its Logistics Readiness Centers who support the garrisons and help manage the Army Food Program in Europe, in attendance were leaders and food service professionals from U.S. Army Europe and Africa, V Corps, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Installation Management Command-Europe, Defense Logistics Agency, Southern European Task Force Africa, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Nutritional Medicine, and more.
In conjunction with the FSMB, the 405th AFSB partnered with one of its prime vendors who organized a two-day food show at the club Sept.17-18. Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nicholas Snyder is the 405th AFSB’s food service branch chief. He said the event was a huge step forward for the Army Food Program in Europe.
“By partnering with industry, the event provided an important avenue to explore current and new subsistence products for introduction into the Army’s supply chain for use at garrison dining facilities, sister service subsistence requirements, and at Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities,” Snyder said.
Snyder, who is assigned to the Support Operations Directorate at the 405th AFSB, said more than 50 vendors showcased over 200 products at the food show, with more than 400 customers attending the two-day event.
“The event showcased the professionalism and dedication of our food service leaders by bringing together strategic partners, industry
stakeholders and customers to highlight the complex ecosystem, teamwork and behindthe-scenes collaboration that supports the warfighter,” said Markell Scales from the Subsistence Supply Management Office in Baumholder, assigned to Logistics Readiness Center Rheinland-Pfalz.
“I made several important contacts and have follow on engagements with agencies to assist in the Commanders Ready and Resilient Council’s holistic health and fitness domain that includes nutrition,” said Melissa Kreitzer, a program analyst with U.S. Army Europe and Africa.
Also at the event, Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support provided multiple training sessions on subsistence processes and procedures. As the Department of Defense’s executive agent for class I (subsistence), class II (clothing and individual equipment), class IV (construction and barrier materials), and class VIII (medical materiel), DLA Troop Support provides $13 billion worth of food, clothing and textiles, construction and engineering equipment, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and equipment, and industrial hardware items to service members and other customers annually.
“Overall, it was a huge success,” said Snyder. “We have taken multiple steps to transform this event into one of the premier events for Army Food Service across the globe. A smile and handshake can go a long way in our customer service-oriented business. We must see and feel, taste and smell in order to ensure our warfighters are taken care of.”
Snyder and his food service team at the 405th AFSB are in the planning phase now to conduct a similar event in the months ahead.
He said their goal is to add more training opportunities at events like this in the future.
The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchronizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.
The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. A child’s astonished look gave added weight to a vexing issue openly addressed at Naval Hospital Bremerton, Sep.18.
As a mother brought her young daughter to Naval Hospital Bremerton’s Pediatric Clinic for an appointment, they happened upon Health Promotion’s Health Fair focus on National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
Part of the annual September theme was a static informational demonstration depicting the number of grams of sugar in lemonade.
“The little girl’s initial wideeyed expression of surprise at learning there are 27 grams of sugar in lemonade was priceless,” said Patricia Skinner, Health Promotion and Wellness Center department head and event organizer.
The actual measurement of a gram might have been unknown to the youngster, but visually noticing such an amount was telling, which was the desired affect.
“Displaying the amount of sugar in lemonade served as a basic visual aid which young children can see for themselves,” remarked Skinner, noting that breaking down the actual contents of each beverage lends an entire new perspective to a child, as well as parent.
Skinner attests that there are juice drinks which have approximately 12 teaspoons of sugar per bottle. There are some lemonades which have as much, or more, sugar than an average can of cola, which has nearly 40 grams of sugar.
“Juice products labeled with ‘ade,’ ‘drink,’ or ‘punch’ often contain five percent juice or less. The only difference between such products and soda is that they are fortified with Vitamin C,” explained Skinner, adding that even a 16.9ounce soda which is advertised having ‘no caffeine’ can have 55 grams of sugar
The American Heart Association recommends for children aged 2 to 18, as well as women, to consume no more than 25 grams — approximately six teaspoons — of sugar per day and men to limit to 36 grams, an equivalent of approximately nine grams a day.
“There’s a lot of easily available drinks with so much sugar and very limited or no nutritional value. Just a lot of empty calories,” said Skinner.
Too much sugar is the root of unhealthy issues for many, affirmed Skinner, such as gaining weight,
Seeing the forest with all the trees… hospital corpsmen assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton join a young beneficiary in an impromptu tree pose designed to test balance and stability during Health Promotion’s Health Fair held in conjunction with the September focus on National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. The Health Fair shared information on various topics associated with the monthly theme, including the American Academy of Pediatrics 5-2-1-0 campaign. The 5-2-1-0 campaign — invoking tree poses not required — is based on the scientific reasoning of daily incorporating five fruits and vegetables into a person’s eating routine; advocating less than two hours for recreational screen time — television, computer, personal phone — usage daily; encouraging at least one hour of daily physical activity; and replacing sugary drinks with water and low-fat milk. According to Patricia Skinner, Health Promotion and Wellness Center department head and event organizer., the campaign is a great way for families to promote a healthy lifestyle by focusing on what children eat, reducing sedentary time, increasing activity, and cutting back on sugar drinks. energy lapses and even more frequent dental visits. Statistical evidence indicates that childhood obesity in North American has tripled over the last three decades. There are nearly 20 percent — one in five — of youths between 2-19 years who are considered obese. That’s 14.7 million American children. Obesity related conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and more.
The Health Fair was not all sugar doom and caloric gloom.
Predicated on the principle that prevention is easier, information was shared on the American Academy of Pediatrics 5-2-1-0 campaign.
5-2-1-0 is based on the scientific reasoning of daily incorporating five fruits and vegetables into a person’s eating routine; advocating less than two hours for recreational screen time — television, computer, personal phone - usage daily; encouraging at least one hour of daily physical activity; and replacing sugary drinks with water and low-fat milk.
NHB initially teamed up with Kitsap Public Health District and other civic and community partners in 2013 to advocate the 5-2-10 campaign.
According to Skinner, the campaign is a great way for fami-
lies to promote a healthy lifestyle by focusing on what children eat, reducing sedentary time, increasing activity, and cutting back on sugar drinks.
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides vitamins and minerals which are important for supporting growth and development and for optimal immune function in children. Skinner even snuck in a few fun fruit facts, such as asparagus come in three different colors of green, white, and purple, and “Strawberries are the only fruit which grows seeds on the outside and a cucumber is a fruit not a vegetable because it has seeds in
the center,” exclaimed Skinner. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that the daily screen time of a child in the U.S. is between two and seven hours a day. That time adds up and can contribute to not only obesity, but lower physical and mental health. The same holds true for adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults, late teens to mid-sixties, engage in at least 2.5 hours of moderate intense physical activity such as brisk walking and activities which help to strengthen muscles. The CDC contends children — ages 6 to 17 — should exercise at least one hour every day. Children ages 3 to 5 should be active throughout the day.
The 5-2-1-0 campaign cites regular physical activity as essential for weight management in all ages and helps prevent chronic disease. While many school age children are active, physical activity can decline during adolescence. Children raised in families with active lifestyles tend to stay active as adults rather than other children brought up in families with sedentary lifestyles.
Skinner concurs that promoting health eating and an active lifestyle for children reaps a host of benefits, including keeping skin, teeth and eyes healthy, strengthening bones and supporting muscles, and helping achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
From improved nutrition to increased mobility, from less screen time to limited sugar intake, all family members can follow an established guideline. It’s as easy as five, two, one, zero.

Oct. 3, 2025, marks the 35th anniversary of the reunification of the Federal Republic of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Based on the Potsdam Agreement signed in August 1945 at the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors governed by the United States, Great Britain and France in the West and the Soviet Union in the East of the country.
The Federal Republic of Germany, commonly referred to as West Germany, was established on May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic, often called East Germany, followed on Oct. 7.
West Germany was comprised of 11 individual states and quickly prospered with an open market economic system. East Germany, with its five states, relied on a planned and government directed economy under Soviet rule. Although they shared a common history, the people of Germany lived in a divided nation for the next forty years. Families were torn apart, some living in the West and other family members being restricted from leaving East Germany. Up to 2.5 million East Germans secretly fled Soviet rule to seek freedom and build new lives in the West.
The city of Berlin was also divided into four sectors and on Aug. 13, 1961, East German authorities began erecting a barrier around the western part of the city (West Berlin), engulfing the Brandenburger Tor (gate). The Brandenburg gate quickly became a symbol of the nation’s division. At first it was merely a barbed wire fence guarded by the East German national army, but over the years it grew to a total length of 75 miles of concrete blocks, up to 15 feet tall, topped with barbed wire, surrounding West Berlin and also dividing the city straight through the middle. In many instances the structure was erected as a double wall with a “death strip” of 100 yards in between the rows of blocks.
Several checkpoints were established between the zones, the most famous being “Checkpoint Charlie,” as an entry point between the Soviet and American sectors. As many as 200 people are said to have lost their lives attempting to flee East Berlin. At the same time, further walls were erected between the East and West German borders and only three transit routes allowed for vehicle travel to Berlin, which was located in the middle of the German Democratic Republic.
A group of young West Berliners, who called themselves “Mauerspechte” (literally wall woodpeckers), frequently set out to the wall near Brandenburger Tor with hammers and chisels. There they chiseled away small parts of the wall, symbolically tearing it down piece by piece.
By the late 1980s, East Germans became increasingly discontent with the overall political situation, government directed economic mismanagement, little to no personal freedom and strict travel restrictions. In a series of peaceful “Monday demonstrations” in Leipzig and other major cities over months, the protestors vividly chanted “Wir sind das Volk!” (We are the people), eventually forcing the government to back down and surprisingly announce the opening of the border on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989. The overwhelmed guards at Bornholmer Strasse near Brandenburg Gate let East Berliners through without checking identities. The news spread like a wildfire and West Berliners greeted their Eastern counterparts in a warm welcome with champagne and flowers at or even on the wall!
After eleven months of negotiations between the two states, the reunification was formally completed in 1990 and Oct. 3 was declared as a German national holiday to celebrate the occasion. Berlin again rapidly became the capital of all 16 states, despite more than half of all Berliners disagreeing to this sudden decision. In the following years, Berlin became Germany’s largest construction site and most of the federal ministries, parliamentarians and government leaders moved into offices next to the Reichstag, the German parliament. Its cupola, which can be visited upon prior registration, was completed in 1999.
In the meantime, Berlin has grown back
into one city and the differences between West and East Berlin are hardly noticeable. It offers many sites to see, for example, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburger Tor, the government area, the East Side Gallery and many more. Berlin is a bustling city and definitely worth a visit during your stay in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Don’t miss out on a relaxing boat tour on the Spree River along numerous famous sites!
Anniversary events take place every year in rotating cities throughout Germany. Saarbrücken, the capital of our neighboring state Saarland, will be the host this year. Saarbrücken is famous for its picturesque walk along the Saar River and its French flair close to the border and is looking forward to a long weekend of celebrations. Next year Berlin, Germany’s capital will host the occasion with fireworks and festivities.
One original block of the Berlin Wall was moved to the traffic circle at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, in 2021. The section of the wall was preserved and set in place by Airmen from the 86th Civil Engineer Group, with the western side with colorful graffiti symbolizing free “West Germany” and the backside the former East German state.
On Friday, Oct. 3, all public offices and stores in Germany will be closed in observance of the holiday. Many Germans will also take leave on Friday to create a long weekend, so things may be at a slower pace around the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
A camp is set up during exercise Agile Bison, at
Sep.
The exercise kicked off with Airmen rapidly erecting an area of operations to use as their base camp for the duration of the exercise.
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Evan Stewart, 435th Contingency Response Squadron airfield manager and Tech. Sgt. Braden Crabtree, 435th CRS air traffic controller, perform an increased security airfield assessment as part of exercise Agile Bison at Koszalin, Poland, Sep.12.

Air Force Capt. Cameron Silver U.S. Space Forces – Space
Space Force Spc. 3 Jordan Zuniga, Space Delta 15 cyber host analyst, earned a spot at the 2025 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship, representing the Department of the Air Force on its 26-member wrestling squad.
Assigned to the National Space Defense Center at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, Zuniga specializes in defensive cyber operations and is now preparing for his second appearance at the championship tournament, set to take place Nov. 14-17 at Fort Bliss, Texas.
“[Cyber operations] demand seamless collaboration between highly specialized teams working towards a common mission goal,” Zuniga said.
As a defense cyber analyst, Zuniga’s duties include conducting intelligence-driven defensive cyberspace warfare operations alongside mission partners in the intelligence community, assuring the NSDC’s space superiority mission by identifying, denying and defending against threats.
While he thinks it may not be readily apparent to some, Zuniga
views this job and his passion for wrestling as having a synergistic relationship.
“Wrestling cultivates resilience, strategic thinking, and physical endurance — all of which enhance a guardian’s effectiveness,” Zuniga said. “Conversely, military service instills discipline, mental fortitude under pressure, and a heightened sense of teamwork and purpose — bolstering a wrestler’s performance and mental game.”
Zuniga first competed in the championship tournament in 2023, taking last year off to focus on military training. But he didn’t grow up wrestling.
“The only reason I had joined the wrestling team was because my high school football coach encouraged everyone to wrestle after football season was over, to improve tackling and stay in shape,” he said. “Turns out, I was a decent wrestler.”
Zuniga went on to wrestle collegiately at Río Hondo College in Whittier, California, before joining the Space Force. Now, he’s found a way to do both and credits the rigors of his job for making him a better competitor on the mat.
“When things don’t go as originally planned, we implement our
contingency plans at work,” he said. “The same goes for when I wrestle. If I feel that I’m not getting the result I’m looking for, I switch my game plan and work towards something that will have more of an effect.”
Zuniga says that his leadership has been very supportive of his wrestling pursuits and has encouraged him to push both his physical and mental limits as they’ve accommodated his training and
competition schedule.
Space Force Tech. Sgt. Ruben Puebla, DEL 15 operator and Zuniga’s supervisor, knows Zuniga is a vital piece of the NSDC team and mission.
“Spc. 3 Zuniga plays a vital role in Delta 15’s mission success as a cyber host analyst,” Puebla said. “His efforts are setting the foundation for how Delta 15 executes cyber operations to defend the National Space Defense Center’s
space superiority mission.”
At this upcoming tournament, Zuniga and teammates will compete against the other military services in 10 different weight classes for both freestyle and GrecoRoman wrestling.
“Representing the branch in an armed forces wrestling competition is a profound privilege that evokes a deep sense of appreciation,” Zuniga said. “The competition is a chance to honor the Space Force by demonstrating its values and capabilities, while also standing alongside the very best athletes from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.”
When asked about his goals for the tournament, Zuniga set the bar high and took the opportunity to offer some advice to prospective military athletes.
“When going into a tournament, I always have a goal of coming in at first place,” he said. “If you’re a guardian who would like to pursue elite-level athletics, stay focused on your purpose and communicate openly with your leadership. With discipline, balance and the right support, you can excel both in your sport and in your service to the mission.”

the primary city of the country, Vienna functions as Austria’s political, economic and cultural center.
Up to the early 20th century, Vienna was the largest European city with the most German speakers. It now serves as the home of many large global organizations such as Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and as one of the United Nations’ four global headquarters.
Being located towards the eastern side of Austria, Vienna is very close to Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic. Together with the nearby capital of Slovakia (Bratislava), a metropolitan region has formed with over three million people. In addition, Vienna’s city center is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Due to an illustrious musical legacy and history, Vienna has been called the City of Music by many. Sigmund Freud, the world’s first psychoanalyst, is just one of many famous personalities that were proud to call it home.
History
Vienna’s roots go back to the Roman and Celtic settlements before it changed into a Baroque and Medieval city and the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s capital. There is strong evidence that early habitation around the city goes back to about 500 BC, when the Celts settled on the Danube River where the city stands today. The Romans fortified the city’s frontier in 15 BC, a city they referred to as Vindobona to keep it safe from the Germanic tribes living in the north.
During the Napoleonic Wars, the city was made the Austrian Empire’s capital and even after the compromise of 1867 of the Austro-Hungarian regions the city remained the capital.
From (Austrian-born) Adolf Hitler’s union with Vienna in 1938 to the end of the Second World War, Vienna and all of Austria was considered part of Germany. However, it lost its status as a capital to Berlin throughout the Nazi era. In 1945 Vienna was besieged by Soviet Army and Anglo-American air raids and artillery duels between Wehrmacht, SS and the Red Army. The city’s infrastructure was destroyed during the war. Vienna remained under Soviet control until 1955, even after having been restored as the capital of Austria much earlier.

Vienna offers a bewildering food variety across most of its restaurants. It is famous for its veal cutlet (the Kalbsschnitzel) or pork cutlet pounded flat, coated in breadcrumbs, egg and flour before being fried in butter. Other Viennese cuisines to check out include Tafelspitz (boiled beef served with fried mashed potatoes – another must-try), Geröstete Erdäpfel (potatoes, cream and horseradish mixture known as Apfelkren) and stale bread and mayonnaise chives sauce cuisine known as Schnittlauchsauce. Sausages are very popular here, too, especially from street vendors, most of which also sell potato fritters and hot chestnuts known as Maroni during the winter.

Vienna has vineyards of its own with the wine being served in Heuriger (small, openair pubs), particularly in the wine growing regions of Floridsdorf, Liesing, Favoriten and Dobling.
