The 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron hosted five Royal Norwegian Air Force personnel for an annual War Reserve Materiel familiarization and exchange event at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 7-14. The weeklong event brought together Airmen from the 86th MMS, 86th Maintenance Squadron, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron and Norwegian aerospace ground equipment service members to exchange knowledge, refine maintenance and storage procedures for equipment, and ensure the readiness of U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s WRM assets. Placing these materials strategically across the European theater reduces response time during operations by providing immediate access to mission essential resources and equipment.
“The whole premise of the WRM program is the prepositioning of equipment within the European theater ahead of the combat force,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Frank Marquette, 86th MMS director of operations. “Airmen stepping into

harm’s way expect that equipment to be ready and functioning. Without credible, standardized WRM, you don’t have actual credible deterrence.”
Throughout the week, participants conducted hands-on familiarization and maintenance on various AGE and logistics equipment, including self-generating nitrogen servicing carts, diesel generators, air conditioners, refuelers, loaders and forklifts. The sessions gave the Norwegian technicians valuable time with materiel assets and offered U.S. Airmen the opportunity to exchange knowledge with seasoned maintainers.
“I take these training opportunities to learn from the Norwegians to heart, they’ve been doing my job longer than I have,” said Master Sgt. Alexander Tempel, 86th MMS flightline systems flight chief. “One of them even identified a contradiction in a technical order that had gone unnoticed for years. We took that feedback straight to the engineers and got it corrected. That’s the value we get from these exchanges; we learn from each other.”
In addition to the Norwegian air force airmen visiting Ramstein AB, members of the 86th MMS travel to Norway twice a year to perform quality assurance inspections and
ensure equipment meets U.S. Air Force standards. These reoccurring equipment checks prevent local variations in procedure and reinforce the consistent technical practices held between our two partnering nations.
The Norwegians maintain U.S. equipment at two remote storage sites. Each site manages roughly 300 pieces of AGE, providing crucial support to the WRM program and NATO’s northern capabilities.
“Having subject matter experts who’ve maintained this equipment for decades brings incredible value,” Marquette said.
“But it’s also important we keep everything standardized to Air Force procedures and not local variations. That’s what these visits and training achieve.”
As the nature of warfare continues to evolve, regular engagements ensure both U.S. and Norwegian personnel are aligned together on materiel maintenance standards, technical updates and shared operational goals.
“Our relationship with our mission partners is integral to achieving victory at the Global Gateway and throughout the European theater, said Maj. Nicholas Spivey, 86th MMS commander. “This event epitomized the spirit of partnership and will continue reinforce readiness today and well into the future.”

Air Force and Guardians stationed in the European theater should note the recommended holiday mailing dates to ensure timely delivery of cards, letters, and packages to the United States:
• USPS Ground Advantage: Nov. 21
• First Class Mail (including greeting cards) and Priority Mail: Dec.9
• Priority Mail Express Military Service: Dec. 16
These dates apply to mail originating in Europe and heading to U.S. destinations. Similar dates apply if you’re in the U.S. and mailing to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses. “We encourage our Air Force and Guardians postal patrons to mail early to ensure their items arrive on time,” said Mr. William Taylor.
Avoid long lines by mailing early
By mailing early, customers can also take advantage of the economical USPS Ground Advantage service offered at European military post offices. However, this service is slower than priority mail and PMEMS, which are more expensive but provide expedited handling.
Most military mail in Europe is flown to the U.S. on commercial aircraft. Once stateside, packages are routed according to
the selected mail service. Proper packaging is essential, as packages will be handled multiple times en route. Below are tips to ensure your items arrive safely:
USPS Mailing Tips
Choose the Right Box: Use a sturdy box with enough room for padding around the contents. For items up to 10 lbs., opt for paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes. If reusing a box, cover all old labels.
Free USPS Boxes: Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express boxes are free at your local post office.
Cushioning: Add enough padding inside the box. If the contents move when you shake it, add more padding. Place an extra address label inside in case the outer label is damaged.
Sealing: Use 2-inch-wide tape to seal the box and reinforce the seams securely. Avoid duct tape and use proper packaging materials like clear, brown, or reinforced.
Shipping Liquids: Some nonflammable, nonhazardous liquids are allowed if sealed in waterproof containers. Mark the package with “this side up,” and check with post office personnel for country-specific restrictions.
Size Limits: Packages must not exceed 70 pounds. For faster services like Priority Mail, the combined length and girth should not exceed 108 inches; for USPS Ground Advantage, 130 inches.
Correct Addressing: Ensure complete, accurate addresses. Print or type the recipient’s address parallel to the package’s longest side and ensure it’s legible from arm’s length. Visit www.usps.com to check current address format.
Return Address: Include your return address in the upper-left corner of the same side of the package as the recipient’s address.
USPS extra services
For additional protection or peace of mind, consider adding one of the following extra services:
• Adult Signature: Requires a signature from someone 21 or older.
• Certified Mail: Provides proof of mailing and delivery attempts.
• Insured Mail: Coverage up to $5,000 (USPS services include some insurance).
• Registered Mail: Maximum security and optional insurance up to $50,000.
• Tracking & Signature Confirmation:
Real-time tracking and signature verification.
Customs declaration requirements
All mail from outside the U.S. is subject to customs inspection. Ensure all customs forms are accurately completed and descriptions of items are clear to avoid delays or return to sender (RTS). Avoid vague descriptions like “electronics” or “gifts.” Be specific, such as “wooden skateboard” instead of “skateboard.”
Some standard prohibited items include:
• Cigarettes or loose tobacco
• Hand sanitizer
• Alcoholic beverages
• Vape products
• Perfumes containing alcohol
For faster service, complete your customs forms online at USPS.com. Many post offices offer expedited service for customers with pre-printed customs forms.
Customs declaration options
USPS Click-N-Ship: Customers can create an account, complete their customs declaration, and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS-approved credit cards. This option allows for a quick and efficient mailing process.
Print at Home: Customers can fill out and print the customs declaration from the USPS website without creating an account. Payment can be made at the postal finance window when presenting parcels for mailing.
PS Form 2976-R (Manual Option): When the USPS website is unavailable or offline, post office personnel can provide PS Form 2976-R, the Customs Declaration, and Dispatch Note. However, using this manual option may lead to longer waiting times and lines at the post office. Contact your local installation postmaster for more information on mailing tips, customs requirements, or holiday hours.

Public Health Command Europe personnel from the Environmental Health Sciences and Laboratory Sciences Divisions completed their annual professional exchange with the German Association of Gas and Water (Deutscher Verein des Gasund Wasserfachs e.V.) on Oct. 9.
This ongoing collaboration, established in 2015, reinforces PHCE’s commitment to ensuring safe and sanitary drinking water systems on U.S. Army installations throughout Europe.
This year’s event, coordinated by Bettina Eckels, PHCE Environmental
Engineer and Stefan Neuschwander from the DVGW Regional Office Saarland, focused on the intricacies of water treatment and delivery, moving beyond infrastructure operation to examine the materials and manufacturing processes critical to water quality.
The group toured facilities operated by the municipal utilities, including two water treatment plants and a state-of-the-art drinking water laboratory.
The visit provided a comprehensive look at how drinking water and wastewater are managed for both German households and U.S. Army facilities. Participants, comprised of environmental health scientists,
laboratory scientists, and industrial health professionals, split into groups to maximize learning opportunities.
“The collaboration between Public Health Command Europe and its host nation counterparts is incredibly valuable,” says Eckels. “It builds trust, improves effectiveness, and enhances operational capabilities.”
PHCE’s Environmental Health Engineering Section plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of drinking water on Army installations. This includes rigorous oversight of water systems, ensuring they are operated and maintained to the highest standards. The annual
DVGW partnership is a key component of this effort.
This year’s event underscores the importance of collaboration in maintaining safe drinking water supplies. By learning from German expertise, PHCE strengthens its capabilities to safeguard water quality for Soldiers, Families, and civilian employees stationed in Europe. The partnership serves as a model for proactive engagement and continuous improvement in environmental health practices.

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Ramstein Air Base is wellknown for being the largest U.S. military installation in Europe. With the 86th Airlift Wing as host wing, two supporting wings, the Headquarters of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, NATO Allied Air Command Headquarters and its support units interacting to support and conduct airlift missions as the main hub in Europe. Its two runways and the surrounding areas need to be maintained, taking environmental aspects into consideration.
However, Ramstein is much more than a concrete jungle with spacious ramps areas, operational facilities on sealed surfaces, and aircraft hangars. It is also home to a number of natural dwellers that many may not be aware of. It is a valuable habitat for diverse plants, animals and insects lying amid the Palatinate Forest, Germany’s largest coherent forest area.
During the Paleolithic era, about 12,000 years ago, hunters and gatherers populated the region and a large swamp spanning from Ramstein to Homburg slowly formed more than 20 lakes and peat bogs throughout time. During construction of the base in the early 1950s, the impenetrable peat bog had to be drained in a large-scale landfill activity and railroads tracks were constructed to bring in soil and construction materials.
Based on the original ecological condition of the landscape, the area near the runways still contain several smaller ponds and streams. These ponds and streams are ideal for versatile species, including threatened or endangered animals and plants. There are over 100 hectares of wetlands and 250 hectares of forest on Ramstein Air Base.
Bats, reptiles, amphibians and
insects find an ideal biotope to breed and prosper on Ramstein’s valuable national habitat. Taking a closer look, those interested will discover butterflies, grasshoppers, dragonflies and ground beetles along with over 115 types of plants, such as bee orchid, lousewort and maiden pink. A family of rabbits might scurry over the ground. Endangered marsh frogs have been heard quacking and a very rare resting bird, the greater short-toed lark was detected May 4, 2022.
Due to the rarity of the species, the lark detection is to be considered an exceptional occurrence. The greater short-toed lark inhabits dry, treeless, and shrubless open landscapes such as dry grasslands and semi-deserts as well as fallow land and barren areas in cultivated landscapes. The species’ range includes large parts of the southern Palearctic from northwest Africa and Spain to China. In Western and Central Europe, the northernmost breeding occurrences are in central France and Hungary. The observation could be the first record of this species in RhinelandPalatinate. Also, a high population with approximately 150 breeding pairs of the common skylark has recently been discovered on the premises.
A falconer is regularly at the runway to deter birds, particularly during the migration season, to maintain aircraft safety. In July 2021, the first and so far, unique detection of a wildcat was achieved via wildcams in the southwest of the base. Hunters are permitted to keep larger animals clear of the runways and taxi ways to ensure ground safety and avoid collisions.
Due to a large number of construction projects in the last three decades more than 30 percent of the original trees had to be cut. Finding an equilibrium between operational requirements and environmental aspects is a

diligent task. The U.S. Air Force is required to comply fully with German environmental laws as the land itself remains property of the German government.
Reforestation measures were carried out after construction of the northern runway to provide shade and shelter for mammals and birds, as well as sight protection from the autobahn. Additionally, large efforts have been made to create leisure spots for the community such as the pond near the Southside Chapel. It has become a popular recreation spot with picnic tables while a running track on the former railway line was constructed for joggers. It might just be fun to take a walk around the base with colorful red and yellow leaves during fall, maybe discovering a squirrel bunkering nuts for winter. Onlookers may experience fog lifting from the wetlands near the West Gate on a misty fall morning.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community draws all of its drinking water from 15 deep wells several hundred feet below ground. Water is pumped from the wells, treated and then distributed within the community. To keep drinking water clean, the local environmental teams monitor more than 1,000 groundwater wells along on Ramstein Air Base.
The 86th Civil Engineer Environmental Office engages in close ties with various German agencies such as the Federal and State Forest Departments and the Upper and Lower Environmental Authorities in Rheinland-Pfalz to maintain a balance between wildlife and operational needs. In addition, mission requirements, logistics and daily tasks need to be taken into consideration. This is where the Environmental Office acts as a liaison between U.S. military organizations and German environmental agencies.
The office is also instrumental in planning and organizing annual Earth Day events, which take place in April. Activities such as tree planting events, building bat houses, educational activities for children, and visiting the water treatment plant are scheduled next spring. In addition, the office is developing a nature walking path and preparing for the 20-year anniversary of the opening and re-naturalization of Mehlinger Heide, an area near Sembach, once used for military maneuvers.
A group of 25 trainees

and their instructors from the Federal Forest Department visited Ramstein in October to strengthen ties, enhance communication and for a better overall understanding of Ramstein’s biome. First the students received a briefing and an overview of the installation and its diverse biotopes. The group then had a chance to discuss issues, ask questions and familiarize themselves in a casual get-together at lunch.
The group then set out to a tour of the base to view base facilities such as the housing area, schools, operational buildings, dormitories and a glimpse of the runways. It also used the opportunity to visit valuable biotopes such as the southern part of the air
base, areas including special sites with high biotope or habitat value for rare or endangered species of flora and fauna and forestry areas throughout the base.
The tour was rounded off with the chance to climb on board a U.S. C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. Members of the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hosted the guests and explained features of the aircraft, operational requirements and reported about their daily tasks as maintainers. The group was amazed by the complexity of the U.S. installation, not comparable to any other in their areas of responsibility and was truly impressed with the air base being such a diverse biotope with an abundance of wildlife.

Due to the current U.S. government shutdown, service members may not receive a paycheck for the foreseeable future. As a result, members living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community may have difficulty paying rent. To help prepare, personnel are urged to be proactive and understand their key protections under German law.
The below information provided by the Ramstein legal office serves as information only and does not constitute legal advice.
If a tenant misses rent, landlords may take action and send a termination or eviction notice. If this is the case, one should remain calm and informed, since the landlord may be unaware of German law and the notice is likely invalid.
It is important to know a tenant cannot be legally evicted for missing a single month’s rent. However, this does not apply to the ‘One Month, One Cent’ Rule which explains that in order for a lease to be legally terminated due to non-payment, a tenant must be in arrears for an amount totaling more than one month’s full rent. For example, if a month’s rent is €1,000 the tenant can’t be legally evicted until they owe €1,000.01 or more.
A landlord is also legally permitted to use your security deposit to cover unpaid rent. In that event, it is essential to understand you will be legally required to replenish the security deposit to its full amount after the fact.
Service members are encouraged to make a partial rental payment. This could demonstrate good faith and reduce the amount you will owe later. While not legally required, sending an email explaining there may be a delay in payment due to the government shutdown also helps maintain a good relationship with one’s landlord.
During this time of uncertainty the best practice is to be proactive and take measures to get ahead of any potential misunderstandings by openly communicating with your landlord.
If you receive a notice from your landlord or have any concerns, please contact your local Legal Assistance Office immediately. The Ramstein Law Center has experts in German landlordtenant law prepared to advise on specific situations, review documentations and help with any necessary communication.

Beneath the roar of the crowd and the glare of the gymnasium lights, over 20 fighters from across the world step into a six-foot high, 30-foot-wide cage. The area — better known as the “octagon” — is a place where competitors showcase their training and combative skills. For one San Franciso native, it was almost a second home.
“When it comes to martial arts, I want to always be around it. I just love it,” declared Senior Airman Jonas Sunga, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, aircraft electrical and environmental systems technician.
The Turnerschaft Rodalben Halle sports gymnasium transformed into an exhibition for a local martial arts competition. The fight night showcased the talent, hard work and dedication of artists mastering their craft of mixed martial arts, kickboxing and Muay Thai. The participants weren’t just fighting for the knockout, but also supporting an honorable cause. The event raised money for a charity that supported research on cancer and other life-threatening illnesses within the German community.
“My mom was sick, so it means a lot to me,” expressed Sunga. “My great friend, my great coach has lost somebody due to leukemia, and [it] means a lot that I could have my hand in raising money for something like this,”
His unit, which falls under 86th Airlift Wing, is located at Ramstein Air Base, and is responsible for aircraft and equipment maintenance to fulfill the wing’s airlift, contingency, and support missions.
Martial arts are able to impart discipline, grit, courage and honor that Sunga can apply on the flightline or on the mat. The principles found in martial arts share the characteristics of the warrior ethos, which emphasizes strength of character and resilience.
“Mixed martial arts teaches me perseverance,” Sunga said. “For example, being down one round, I’ll come back to the second round with my head held high. In my workplace, if I didn’t fix the plane in the amount of time that I need to, I would come back the next day and try my hardest to do so. Not letting the past effect what’s going to happen in the present and future.”
Jonas expressed that he wouldn’t have been successful in either work or in the arena without support.
He had a team of coaches, trainers and most importantly, his family.
Family plays a big part in his overall mindset and motivation to inspire and become a role model for his younger siblings, Sunga explained. His fearless mentality is something he hopes that his siblings can take away when it comes to overcoming obstacles and challenges.
“I get to show my little brothers and sisters ... that literally diving into fear and showing courage is what really matters,” said Sunga. “It’s doing something courageous, doing something that you might fail, but you still go in your best and try to get the job done.”
Sunga hopes to continue being a positive influence while progressing in his professional and martial arts career.
As part of that hope, he would like to become a coach, mentoring the next generations of fighters.

The 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and 86th Maintenance Squadron hosted the first-ever five-day-long training called the Ignite Weapons School at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 20-24.
The Ignite Weapons School was a condensed version of the typical four-monthlong course of the Aircraft Maintenance Munitions Operation School. The training was an effort to ensure readiness for future short-notice deployments.
During the course, participants completed 13 academic lessons followed by a tabletop exercise simulating a short-notice deployment. The course aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of deployment processes.
“The Air Force operations of deployments don’t succeed or fail on the back of one per-
son,” said Master Sgt. Michael Dionne, 86th MXG tactics superintendent. “We are a team, all of us are pieces of the puzzle.”
The puzzle included teamwork and operational awareness, in order to emphasize collective efforts from the beginning to the end of a deployment. Teams were given data, an aircraft, personnel, logistics, and tasked to build and brief a deployment plan within 48 hours.
“The goal is to test our leader’s critical thinking in deploying a wing’s aviation package to an austere environment,” said Capt. Michael Zaniboni, 86th MXG director of operations. “We want them to be able to adapt to the unknown while digesting a lot of information in a short amount of time.”
The course is designed to expose junior officers and senior non-commissioned officers to the broader scope of operational planning they could encounter in their careers.
Overall, teamwork was essential to the training. Whenever someone was feeling stressed, it was emphasized to the Airmen that they should lean on one another. By showcasing principles of good communication and teamwork, both squadrons took the steps to build essential tools for deployment readiness.
“We’re building that generational muscle memory,” Zaniboni said. “Our leaders are learning to think through what it may take to deploy, sustain operations and bring everyone home safely.”
On the final day, teams collaborated and presented solutions to leadership on how to tackle simulated challenges that occur during preparing or concluding deployments. As the first iteration of the Ignite Weapons School exercise, the course will continue to evolve and expand to include Agile Combat Employment concepts in order to build lethal readiness among the 86th Airlift Wing.

Germany is home to a rich tapestry of wildlife, but few creatures capture the public’s imagination like the stork. These majestic birds, with their long legs and striking white and black plumage, have a special place in German culture and natural history.
The primary stork species found in Germany is the White Stork. These birds are migratory, spending their winters in Africa and returning to Europe in the spring to breed. They are most often seen in the northern and eastern parts of Germany, with notable populations in Brandenburg, MecklenburgWestern Pomerania, and Saxony-Anhalt. These areas offer the wetlands, meadows, and agricultural landscapes that storks prefer for nesting and feeding.
White storks are known for their large nests, which are built in elevated locations such as rooftops, chimneys, and specially constructed platforms. These nests are often reused and added to each year, becoming substantial structures over time. Storks typically lay three to five eggs per clutch, with both parents sharing the responsibilities of incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.
Stork nests are significant not only for their size, but also for their location – often becoming local landmarks. A stork nest on a building is traditionally seen as a good omen, symbolizing prosperity and fertility.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the stork’s life cycle is its long-distance migration. German storks embark on an epic journey to their wintering grounds in Africa, traveling thousands of kilometers each autumn. They typically follow one of two main routes: the western route through Spain and Morocco or the eastern route via the Bosporus in Turkey.
Migration is risky, with storks facing numerous threats along the way, including hunting, habitat loss, and collisions with power lines. However, conservation efforts in Germany and across Europe are helping to mitigate some of these risks, supporting stork populations on their migratory paths.
A White Stork takes flight from a field in Matzenbach, May 25, 2023. One of the most remarkable aspects of the stork’s life cycle is its long-distance migration. German storks embark on an epic journey to their wintering grounds in Africa, traveling thousands of kilometers each autumn.
The White Stork population in Germany has fluctuated over the years due to various factors, including agricultural practices and habitat availability changes. In the mid20th century stork numbers declined sharply, prompting conservationists to act. Efforts to protect wetlands, create artificial nesting sites, and promote sustainable agriculture have contributed to a gradual recovery of stork populations in recent decades.
Organizations like the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) are vital in monitoring stork populations, advocating for their protection, and engaging the public in conservation activities. Programs such as the “Stork Route” in Brandenburg, a tourist trail highlighting prime stork-watching locations, help raise awareness and support for these birds.
Storks hold a special place in German folklore and tradition. They are often associated with good fortune, new beginnings, and family life. The legend that storks deliver babies is widespread in European folklore, including Germany. This charming myth likely originated from the storks’ tendency to nest on rooftops, symbolizing the arrival of new life.

Festivals and events celebrating the stork are typical in regions where the birds are prevalent. For example, the village of Rühstädt in Brandenburg, known as the “Stork Village,” hosts annual festivities that draw visitors eager to see these magnificent birds up close.
The storks of Germany are more than just a wildlife species; they are a symbol of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and successful conservation. Their annual return each spring reminds us of the changing seasons and the enduring bond between humans and nature. Through continued efforts to protect their habitats and raise awareness, Germany can ensure these iconic birds continue to grace its landscapes for generations to come.

The month of November tends to be rather foggy, rainy and windy. In addition, a number of historic events shaped the course of history. However, on a positive note, a few events can light up the season and bring color to dreary days.
Allerheiligen
For most Germans in the region November kicks off with a public holiday on the first of the month and All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 is a religious celebration and public holiday in many parts of the nation. As its name suggests, the Catholic Church honors not only its well-known saints, but also the women and men who had secretly lived and defended their beliefs, and proclaimed the Christian message, but were not officially canonized.
During the course of the first decades after Christ, it became increasingly difficult to individually honor each saint with a celebration. As early as in the fourth century, an annual celebration was then held the first Sunday after Pentecost in honor of all of them. At the end of the eighth century, the religious celebration was moved to Nov. 1 in Ireland, which coincides with the Celtic New Year and marks the beginning of winter. This tradition eventually spread to the European continent.
A modern tradition is to decorate graves of deceased with dried-flower bouquets, wreaths or flower bowls and cover existing plants with fir branches to protect against frost. So-called grave or eternal lights with candles are also placed on graves in memory of beloved family members.
All Saints Day is celebrated on Nov. 1 in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria as a public holiday with all
stores and public offices being closed.
Other German states in the northern and eastern regions as well as Hessen celebrate “Reformationstag” (Reformation Day) in honor of Martin Luther, initiator of the Protestant Reformation, on Thursday, Oct. 31 instead.
St. Martin
Although not a public holiday, another exciting event takes place in the evening on or about Nov. 11. St. Martin might ride through your town on a white horse and bring joy to children. Saint Martin of Tours in France figures prominently in the development of Christianity in fourth-century Europe. This gentle, humble servant, known best for helping those most in need, was chosen by the people of Tours as their spiritual leader, and is considered to be the patron saint of all children.
Tradition has it that children in the region build and decorate lanterns in his honor. They parade through towns singing “Laterne, laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne...(Lantern, lantern, sun, moon and stars….). Many villages organize cheerful parades and music with children carrying their colorful hand-made lanterns bringing light into the dark.
This may be an inspiration for creative activities at pre-school or elementary school in the KMC, as villages are thrilled to share the event with other children. Show off your handcraft skills, join in the fun and grab the opportunity to meet other neighborhood kids. There may be bonfires with food and drinks as well as pretzels for kids in your village. Check your local “Amtsblatt” for exact dates and event times in your individual community.
November Eleven
In Germany Nov. 11 marks the beginning of the Karneval or Fasching Season, also known as the “fifth season” of the year.
Celebrations kick off at 11:11 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz celebrate the event with colorful parades and parties.
In the United States, Veterans Day is always celebrated on Nov. 11, regardless of the weekday. It is mainly intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to national security are appreciated, and to underscore that the fact that all those who served, not only those who died, have sacrificed and done their duty. The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day in commemoration of the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.
National Day of Mourning
On a solemn note, Sunday, Nov. 16 is observed as the National Day of Mourning in commemoration of members of the armed forces of all nations and civilians who died in armed conflicts. This includes fallen soldiers of both world wars, recent armed conflicts, and civilian victims of armed aggression. Every year U.S. Army and Air Force leadership representatives lay wreaths during ceremonies at cemeteries within the KMC along with their German counterparts.
Advent
This year the Advent season, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, starts on Sunday, Nov. 30 to wrap up the month. However, many markets in the area start at the middle of the month, such as the outdoor Christmas Market in Kaiserslautern on Nov. 17 and Culture Market on Nov. 27. Colorful lights and decorations, sweets and treats at the markets are sure to make your mouth water and brighten up your evenings. Stay tuned for a full list of German and neighboring country markets in the Nov. 28 edition.

The dark time of the year has come, days are getting shorter, and darkness sets in earlier.
According to the German Polizei, it is also prime time for burglars and thieves. Kaiserslautern and surroundings are generally considered to be relatively safe and have a low crime rate. But, as always, there are dishonest people everywhere, so please be aware!
According to the Polizei, about 50 percent of burglaries occur between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Most burglars will readily give up if they can’t get into the house within three to five minutes and often work with simple tools such as screw drivers or wrenches.
The German Polizei has started a campaign against burglary and theft and would like to share a few important tips to ensure that you and your family remain safe and take appropriate measures to safeguard your home and belongings.
Do you know your neighbors?
Police experience has shown that observant neighbors can help in avoiding criminal offenses such as burglaries. If you don’t know your neighbors, politely greet them with a friendly “Guten Tag” on the street or invite them to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate across the fence to get to know them a bit. Just recently in Kaiserslautern, an attentive neighbor observed two suspicious characters at the house across the street, called the Polizei and the culprits were caught on scene. In addition, let your neighbors know that you are on a TDY or on vacation and ask them to keep an eye on the house during your absence.
Opportunity makes thieves
Do not even give burglars a chance. Do not deposit any keys in outdoor places, such as under the door mat, under flowerpots or in wall crevices. If possible, let down your rolladen during longer periods of absence, in particular at the back of the house where intruders may remain undiscovered and out of sight. The same is true for items left in your car, such as laptops, cell phones, spare keys or even wallets, as these can be easily spotted in a vehicle. And, by all means, make sure to lock the car, even for short periods of absence.
Burglars always come at night?
Incorrect thinking – burglars often come during the day. They will scout
around the neighborhood and wait for residents to go to school, work or out to shopping. Based on early darkness this time of the year, they are very active during dusk because they are more difficult to spot and not that many people are out on the streets.
Are your windows and your doors safely secured? Have you thought about your basement windows?
Tilted windows are basically open windows and hardly an obstacle for an intruder. Make sure to always properly close windows during your absence. Many modern windows or balcony doors are equipped with separate locks. In addition, turn your house door key two or three times to make sure that the locks are properly anchored in the frame. It is easy to pry open a door if it only falls in place unlocked.
What to do if you spot a burglar in the act?
Retreat to a safe place, immediately dial 1-1-2 and wait for police instructions. Do not attempt to approach or stop the intruder, as this may lead to aggression, and you could endanger yourself. Try to remember as many details as possible, such as how many persons, their appearance (height, hair color, figure and complexion), which language are they speaking, whether they have a car or vehicle and possibly the plate number.
You come home and discover that someone has broken in?
Immediately call police, do not touch anything, and file
a police report for possible insurance matters.
Don’t give pickpockets a chance!
The holiday season is soon to begin bringing with it winter and Christmas Markets, holiday shoppers crowding stores and a few “long fingers” having their most “prosperous” season. If you plan to go to any highly frequented spots, make sure to secure your purses, wallets, cell phones and valuables.
A wallet or phone loosely placed in your back pocket is an easy target, open handbags showing content provide little to no protection against theft. If possible, carry items inside jacket or coat pockets, not visible and difficult for others to reach. You might also consider wearing your backpack in front of you, turning it into a “front pack.” In any case, be careful and don’t give pickpockets a chance! Be vigilant, turn your home into your personal “Fort Knox,” don’t give burglars or thieves an opportunity, and help protect your neighbors as well.

Larry Wilcox, best known for his leading role as a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer and later as a captain in the TV series CHiPs, which aired from 1977 to 1983, was also a Marine Corps combat veteran.
In May 1967, Wilcox went to boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. He served as a field artilleryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, from 1967 to 1970.
Those years included a 13-month deployment to South Viet nam, where he served in

the northernmost region of the country, in places such as Dong Ha, Con Thien and the demilitarized zone bordering North Vietnam.
Also, he fought in the Tet Offensive, which started Jan. 30, 1968, and lasted until Sep. 1968.
Like many Vietnam War vet-

erans, Wilcox’s homecoming was not joyous.
“My memories of my returning home to San Francisco were ugly, and I did not understand why people spat on you for risking your life,” he said, referring to people at the airport.
During his final year of military service, he was stationed at Marine
Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, where he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1973. Wilcox, born Aug. 8, 1947, in San Diego, still lives there. His older brother, Randy, also served in the Marine Corps, including during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

HILDESHEIM from Page 1
destinations. This city of just over 100,000 people combines the depth of German medieval history with a relaxed, walkable charm that invites slow exploration. From UNESCO wonders and fairytale squares to world-class museums and peaceful riverside strolls, Hildesheim offers visitors a chance to step into history while enjoying the rhythm of modern life. Here are five fun and interesting things to do when visiting this beautiful German city.
1. Step back in time at St. Michael’s Church
One of the crown jewels of Hildesheim is St. Michael’s Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a masterpiece of early Romanesque architecture. Built in the early 11th century, this church is remarkable not only for its symmetry and design but also for the sense of calm that fills its vast interior.
The ceiling alone is worth the visit. It features an extraordinary painted wooden panel from around 1230, depicting the Tree of Jesse, a genealogical representation of Christ’s lineage.
Visitors can take a guided tour to learn more about the church’s symbolism and restoration, or simply sit in quiet reflection, soaking in over a thousand years of history.
2. Marvel at the legendary St. Mary’s Cathedral and the thousand-year-old rose
Just a short walk away, St. Mary’s Cathedral (also known as Hildesheimer Dom) is another UNESCO-listed site, and it’s home to one of the city’s most iconic symbols — the Thousand-Year Rose. Legend has it that as long as the rosebush beside the cathedral’s apse continues to bloom, Hildesheim will prosper. Astonishingly, the rose — a dog rose variety — is believed to be over 1,000 years old, having survived (among other things) bombings in World War II that destroyed much of the cathedral.
Inside, the cathedral’s art treasures are equally impressive. Don’t miss the Bernward Doors, a pair of 11th century bronze doors that depict scenes from the Bible in exquisite detail, or the Bernward Column, a spiraling masterpiece reminiscent of Trajan’s Column in Rome. The entire complex radiates a powerful sense of endurance — a living testament to Hildesheim’s deep roots and ability to rise again.

3. Explore the historic market square
If there’s one place that immediately captures Hildesheim’s charm, it’s the Market Square. Once described as one of the most beautiful squares in northern Germany, it was completely destroyed during World War II but painstakingly rebuilt to its former glory. The result is a fairytale-like scene of timber-framed houses, ornate facades, and cobblestone streets that feel straight out of a storybook.
At the heart of the square stands the Butchers’ Guild Hall, which is one of the most elaborate half-timbered buildings in the world, richly decorated with carvings and colorful painted details. Today, it houses a restaurant and the city museum, offering a great opportunity to dine with a side of history.
The square is especially beautiful in the evening when the buildings are illuminated. During the Christmas season, the square transforms into a glittering market full of festive cheer: this year, Hildesheim’s Christmas market runs from November 24 to December 28.
4. Discover art and culture at the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum
For art and history lovers, the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum is an absolute must. This world-class museum holds one of the most significant collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts outside of Egypt, including mummies, hieroglyphic tablets, and sculptures that tell the stories of pharaohs and daily life along the Nile. Please note, however, that the permanent Egyptian collection is undergoing a minor renovation, and will reopen in December 2025.
Beyond Egyptology, the museum also features impressive collections of ancient Peruvian textiles, Chinese porcelain, and regional archaeological finds from Lower Saxony. Exhibits are well-curated and engaging, making the museum both educational and accessible. Whether you’re traveling solo or with family, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring its fascinating galleries.
5. Stroll through the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum and relax by the Innerste river
For a more contemplative experience, visit the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum, located next to St. Mary’s Cathedral. The museum houses a strong collection of medieval liturgical art, including gold and silver chalices, manuscripts, and reliquaries that reveal the city’s deep religious heritage. Even for non-specialists, the craftsmanship and symbolism behind these pieces are awe-inspiring.
After your museum visit, take a leisurely stroll along the Innerste river, which winds gracefully through the city. The riverside paths and nearby parks are perfect for a picnic, a bit of people-watching, or a quiet moment under the trees. It’s also a popular spot for cyclists and joggers — or anyone who wants to take a breather from sightseeing.
Getting to Hildesheim
By car, Hildesheim is 4 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Excellent options are also available by rail, so check with Deutsche Bahn for timetables and prices.
