Calm under pressure: Airman’s quick thinking saves infant’s life

What began as a quiet autumn Sunday for Senior Airman Hannah Lillund quickly turned into a moment that would test her composure, skills and instinct.

“I was just sitting on the couch relaxing,” said Hannah, 569th United States Forces Police Squadron vehicle registration clerk. “I heard someone yelling, ‘Help us! She’s not breathing!’ so I ran down the stairwell barefoot, in pajamas, to help.”

Senior Airman Elena Lucas, 86th Communications Squadron client systems technician, and her husband, Mason Edlin, were frantically trying to save their ninemonth-old daughter, Eumi, who had suddenly begun choking.

“We were just in our living room playing

with her,” Lucas said. “One second she was fine and the next she started coughing and then went completely silent. Her eyes were wide and she wasn’t breathing. I yelled for my husband to call 112 and we ran outside the apartment screaming for help.”

Thankfully Hannah heard the call for help from the floor below and her instincts as a first responder kicked in immediately. She and her husband Tanner immediately sprinted out of their apartment to help, Hannah to the neighbor’s apartment and Tanner to find emergency services.

On her way down the stairs, Hannah was also intercepted by her children, Killian and Serena, who were on their way upstairs to get their mom for help. She found Lucas still striking her baby’s back, desperately trying to clear Eumi’s airway.

“She came down so calm,” Lucas said.

“She just said, ‘Can I see her?’ and took her from me. I swear, it was just three taps on the back and suddenly all this saliva came out of her mouth, she coughed and the color came back to her face. It was like watching a miracle happen right in front of us.”

Within 2 minutes of calling 112 emergency services arrived on the scene, Edlin said. Paramedics assessed Eumi and found her breathing steadily.

“The fire department got there so fast,” he said. “But by then, Hannah had already saved her. The whole thing happened in about five minutes, but it felt like forever.”

Hannah said her training kicked in like muscle memory.

“In security forces tech school they teach you how to keep calm under pressure,” Hannah said. “They make you perform while your heart’s racing. You learn to breathe,

focus and just do what needs to be done.”

For Lucas and Edlin, the experience remains both terrifying and humbling.

“I’ve never felt more helpless,” Edlin said. “I was doing everything I knew to do but it wasn’t working. And then Hannah shows up cool, calm and collected, like she’s done it a hundred times. She really saved Eumi’s life.”

As the first baby girl delivered at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center this year, Eumi is now back to her usual self.

“I still think about it sometimes,” Hannah said. “How everything lined up perfectly. My kids seeing it, me being home when it happened and being trained for moments like this. It reminds me why we do what we do. You never know when you’ll need to be ready.”

For one family, that readiness made all the difference.

Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach sworn in as 24th Air Force Chief of Staff

Gen. Ken Wilsbach was sworn into office as the 24th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, Nov. 3.

Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink administered the oath of office. Wilsbach was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Thursday, Oct. 30 by unanimous consent.

“I want to welcome General Wilsbach as the 24th Chief of Staff of the Air Force,” said Meink. “With his vast experience in the Pacific and as a commander at all levels, he is the right leader for the Air Force. I also want to thank his wife Cindy for standing by his side throughout his career, and I look forward to their continued support and advocacy for our Airmen and their families.”

Wilsbach, nominated by President Donald Trump in September, formerly commanded Air Combat Command, Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia. He succeeds Gen. David Allvin.

As the Air Force’s seniormost officer, the

CSAF is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping nearly 665,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Wilsbach and other service chiefs function as military advisers to the Secretary of War, National Security Council and the President.

In September, after his nomination, Wilsbach shared his intent to strengthen warrior ethos, build a more lethal force and advocate for Airmen and their families.

In a letter to the force, Wilsbach shared his vision of Airmen’s enduring purpose: ‘Fly. Fix. Fight.’ He also stressed the need to maintain readiness, invest in modernization and solidify warrior culture.

“Every Airman, no matter their specialty, contributes to the generation of airpower to support the joint fight,” he said. “From the flightline to the cockpit, from logistics to networks, every part of our Air Force delivers combat power. Together, we afford our nation the ability to deter aggression and when necessary, to fight and win.”

Airman 4 Life: 86 MXS

Stepping away from the flightline and into the classroom, the 86th Maintenance Squadron emphasized the importance of strengthening the force at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 27.

Through the Airman 4 Life program, Airmen learned that readiness isn’t just about turning wrenches, it’s about developing the person behind the uniform.

The program, which began in 2020, started as a grassroots initiative designed to help Airmen develop leadership and life skills they might not otherwise encounter in their daily duties. Now five years later, the program has spread to maintenance squadrons across the Air Force, enabling Airmen and supervisors to take time quarterly to grow in different facets of their career and personal lives.

Within five years, the maintenance squadrons have fostered this program to encourage leaders to ‘refuel’ on the important lessons that build their professional and personal lives.

“The intent behind this program is to deliberately carve out time for Airmen to focus on developing individuals,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Bradley McNamara, 86th MXS commander. “We want them to see that the Air Force values Airmen not just the mission they perform, but for who they are as people.”

The first seminar, “How to be a Good Supervisor,” covered principles of accountability, goal-setting using the specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely framework, and Air Force standards. The second seminar focused on developing critical thinking and root cause analysis skills,

teaching participants how to identify problems and make effective decisions based on real-world scenarios.

“It’s really tailored to their needs, we pause, take in feedback and build the program around what Airmen want to learn,” said Tech. Sgt. Noland Perine, 86th MXS program manager. “They gain skills that benefit them personally and professionally, which ultimately improves morale and strengthens our wing culture.”

The main takeaway of A4L is providing Airmen the opportunity to share knowledge and learn practical tips and tricks, collaborate training encourages reflection, and assist in identifying ways to become more effective.

“Just learning different ways to analyze problems and ensure you’re a person assisting, creating and facilitating a positive work environment goes a long way,” said Airman 1st Class Antoine Bennett, 86th MXS isochronic inspections crew chief.

During the event, different workshops across the squadron came together to provide diverse perspectives and share best practices, strengthening the Airman core. Additionally, several non-commissioned officers learned how to best support their Airmen building onto their careers, while identifying weaknesses and honing in on strengths.

“I’m looking forward to ensuring our Airmen and NCOs are equipped with problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will go a long way in our everyday mission,” Noland said. “When we have courses like critical thinking and problem solving, we’re giving them tools that aren’t attached to our specialty but help them figure things out and grow as people.”

There is no question that our lifestyles affect the way we eat. On a day-to-day basis, we are often rushing about trying to get things done and this can lead to insufficient time for preparing and cooking proper meals. It is vital that we make an effort to take control of our diets and do our best to make healthy food choices.

There are many factors which affect our physical form such as exercise but if you don’t have much time for exercise you must at least take time for your diet which will make a big difference in the way you feel and look. All it takes is small steps towards a healthier lifestyle and keeping the cravings away. Here are a few helpful tips to get you on track towards a simply healthier diet without starving yourself.

The most important meal of the day First things first, start the day off on a healthy note by eating breakfast. Do you know why? Yes, it is the most important meal of the day. Many of us get into the terrible

habit of skipping breakfast; well it is time to change the record. There are many health benefits to reap by eating breakfast. It can help prevent heart disease, improve your memory and cognitive function as well as assist you with weight loss. The best foods to include in your breakfast are whole grain cereals, eggs and fruit. A great way to ‘break your fast’ and start off the day!

Fruit and Veg –

The foundation to any healthy diet is fruit and vegetables. They are low in calories and ooze vital vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre that are essential to any healthy diet. We suggest the rainbow rule. What is this? Eat as many different colors of fruit and vegetables you can for maximum variety of nutrients. Green vegetables like lettuce, kale, broccoli and cabbage are full of iron calcium, magnesium and A, C, E and K vitamins. Try incorporating sweet vegetables to your diet like corn, carrots and sweet potato to avoid sweet cravings from other foods.

Moderation

Moderation and portion size control are key to maintaining a healthy diet. So, what do we mean by this? We mean eat less of the unhealthy stuff and more of the healthy. Do not eliminate foods that you love, rather eat less of them. Serve your meals on smaller plates to avoid the temptation of serving up larger portions. Instead of eating 3 large meals per day, try 5 or 6 smaller meals; this will help you avoid overeating when you become hungry.

Protein

If you find that you struggle with feeling hungry all the time try adding more protein rich foods to your diet, as this will naturally suppress your appetite and keep you full throughout the day. According to Dukan’s diet you can eat as much protein as you want without putting on weight! So make sure to add as much as fish, eggs, soya products, lean meat and yoghurt (preferably fat-free or low-fat) as possible.

These are some of the most basic and simple guidelines towards a healthier and more balanced diet. A few small steps can mean an awful lot. Best of luck!

NATO annual nuclear exercise, Steadfast Noon

Allied Command Operations initiated NATO’s annual nuclear deterrence exercise, Steadfast Noon. The routine training, that ran until Oct. 24, involved up to 70 aircraft from 14 Allied countries and took place across four host nations, as well as the airspace over the North Sea region.

The primary objective of the exercise is to test and refine the Alliance’s procedures to ensure the continued credibility,

security, and effectiveness of NATO’s nuclear deterrent. This long-planned, routine event is integral to maintaining readiness and promoting transparency regarding the Alliance’s nuclear posture, and it is unrelat-

ed to current global events. No live nuclear weapons are involved.

“We need to do this because it helps us to make sure that our nuclear deterrent remains as credible, and as safe, and as secure, and as effective as possible,” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said ahead of the exercise. “It also sends a clear signal to any potential adversary that we will and can protect and defend all allies against all threats.”

During Steadfast Noon, service members will rehearse procedures related to the deployment of dual-capable aircraft units and the employment of conven-

tional support assets in nuclear operations, ensuring all participating forces can coordinate effectively in a nuclear scenario..

Exercise operations are centered at Volkel Air Base, Netherlands, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, Kleine-Brogel Air Base, Belgium, and Skrydstrup Air Base, Denmark. Romania adds new F-16 squadron to support NATO Air Policing missions

The 48th Fighter Squadron of the 71st “General Emanoil Ionescu” Air Base in Câmpia Turzii, Romania, began NATO-led Air Policing missions over Romanian airspace on Oct. 20.

The missions aim to ensure the integrity of Romanian airspace, strengthen the defence of NATO’s eastern flank and underline Romania’s firm commitment to collective security.

The certification of the second F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron marks a significant milestone in Romania’s growing contribution to the Alliance’s integrated air defence system. It reflects the Romanian Air Force’s high level of interoperability and its capability to operate modern defensive assets alongside other Allied Air Forces.

Currently, three fighter squadrons conduct NATO Air Policing missions from Romanian territory. Alongside the 53rd Fighter Squadron from Fetesti and the 48th Fighter Squadron from Câmpia Turzii, a detachment from the German Air Force’s Tactical Air Wing 71 “Richthofen” – operating five Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft –is carrying out Air Policing missions from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania.

Romania’s participation in the NATO Air Policing mission highlights the Alliance’s defensive and cohesive posture along the Eastern Flank.

Next-gen navigation systems reach Army units

Fielding of the Mounted Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing System, MAPS, GEN II hardware is underway across the Army to provide increased operational effectiveness with advanced positioning, navigation and timing, PNT, systems.

MAPS GEN II is the next-generation PNT system used to provide highly accurate and resilient PNT data to Army vehicles, especially in GPS-degraded or denied environments.

Fielding of the MAPS GEN II systems supports Transformation in Contact 2.0, the Army’s current initiative to rapidly deliver new equipment to operational units.

GEN I vs. GEN II – What’s changed?

The goal when developing MAPS GEN II was GPS security, first and foremost. At the most basic level if Soldiers don’t know where they are or where they are going and have confidence in the information, that’s not a very effective Army. PNT’s number one priority is to enable Soldiers to shoot, move and communicate.

The old trope, never judge a book by its cover, is true for MAPS GEN II. While it may look similar to its predecessor, GEN II boasts several welcomed improvements.

With the advancements in electronic war-

fare threats, a hardened, more secure PNT system was necessary. MAPS GEN II has stronger and more secure encryption through M-Code, uses alternative sensors providing sensor fusion and advancements to the exterior antenna providing Soldiers with more advanced anti-jamming and anti-spoofing capabilities, two of the main electronic warfare threats the Army faces.

“Jamming is disruptive, but spoofing can be far more damaging,” Jennifer Thermos, acting product manager, Mounted PNT said.

“When you don’t have a GPS signal, you know something’s wrong but there are still ways to take action. With spoofing, you’re still getting GPS signal but if you don’t have a system like MAPS GEN II that can recognize a spoofing attempt and reject it, you could be following a false GPS signal which could lead you right to

where the enemy wants you.”

“MAPS GEN II is able to detect and reject GPS interference and provide the Soldier with a notification that it is operating despite the electronic warfare environment,” Thermos said.

The system was designed with size, weight and power in mind, as are all Army systems, to address space limitations inside vehicles.

“MAPS GEN II can take the place of MAPS GEN I systems as well as multiple Defense Advanced GPS Receivers, providing Assured PNT to client systems with one platform,” Thermos explained.

C2 Enabler

Built using open architecture standards which allows modularity and scalability, MAPS GEN II easily integrates with various platforms currently in use as well as future systems still in development that fall under the Command and Control, C2, umbrella.

MAPS GEN II also fits in well with Next Generation Command and Control, NGC2, architecture, part of the “how” the Army accomplishes its TIC goals. The system is a critical enabler of C2 and Fires capabilities. Networks, radios and Fires systems rely on highly accurate timing and positioning data to function.

“If legacy systems don’t have accurate timing and positioning data, the effectiveness of the system overall is degraded,” Thermos explained. “We want to provide every Soldier the full capability, so we want to field as many MAPS GEN II systems as possible, and as fast as possible.”

Training

MAPS GEN II represents a significant leap forward in assured PNT capabilities, but realizing its full potential requires Soldiers to be proficient in its operation and maintenance. The new equipment training provided a foundational understanding of the system’s architecture, operational procedures, troubleshooting techniques and integration with existing platforms.

“This training isn’t simply about learning how to use the system; it is about building confidence and fostering a proactive approach to maintaining PNT superiority in contested environments,” Maj. Shay Wright, assistant product manager, Mounted PNT production and fielding lead said. “Without this dedicated training, the Brigade’s ability to effectively leverage MAPS GEN II’s capabilities would be severely hampered.”

Fresh off training, the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, attached to the 7th Infantry Division, put MAPS GEN II through its paces during a follow-on training event.

“GPS jamming was an issue we had to deal with in training,” Capt. Tianna Johnson, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team said. “We must be prepared to respond to GPS jamming. In one case, MAPS indicated a detected threat, which was exactly what MAPS GEN II was designed to do, and we were able to take the appropriate actions.”

The value of in-person, hands-on training is not an expense, but a critical investment in maintaining our warfighting edge.

Future Plans

With fielding and training to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team complete, the MAPS Team at Program Executive Office Intelligence, Electronic Warfare & Sensors is focused on fielding and training various units including other TIC units, continuing with Stryker BCTs.

New Equipment Fielding is critically important to maintaining Army readiness and achieving overmatch against potential adversaries. These trainings enhance combat capability, maintain readiness levels and align with Army priorities.

Anyone learning German — or even those who’ve finished a course — will likely recall the notorious challenge of mastering “der, die, das.” And then there’s the epic hurdle of tackling ultra-long compound words like Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft, which roughly translates to “Danube Steamship Electricity Main Depot Construction Sub-Civil Service Company.” German doesn’t shy away from linguistic endurance tests!

No doubt, German is a very challenging language to learn! But, luckily there are very humorous sides to it as well, mainly in the form of silly or completely nonunderstandable idioms. We’ll introduce a small selection of funny German sayings to brighten your day and keep you motivated during the dreary month of November!

Mit ihm kann man Pferde stehlen (you can steal horses with her/him): Every group has a friend that is always up to mischief or some kind of obnoxious, adventurous activity, you may wish to join and have a lot of fun!

Einen Vogel haben (to have a bird): Yes, the one you can steal horses with may have a “bird,” meaning that he or she is a bit “cuckoo” or on the crazy side of life. The term can also be used to describe a person who has an outrageous opinion about a certain issue.

Jemanden auf die Palme bringen (to drive someone up the palm tree): This means that you can become so upset about an issue or a person that it drives you crazy. It could, in fact, be the person with the “bird” who might be driving you up the palm tree!

Feierabend! (Celebrating evening): Well, it’s definitely time to celebrate when your workday or week is over! So, let’s party!

Zu tief ins Glas schauen (looking into the glass too deeply): You might be taking the celebrating part a bit too literally and might have a drink or two too many. In this case, stop your glass gazing and make sure to get home safely without driving, or stealing horses to ride home.

Einen Kater haben (to have a tomcat): After last night’s party and your surplus drinks, you might wake up with a cat in your head! In other words, you could be a bit hungover.

Erzähl mir nix vom Pferd (don’t tell me about a horse): Oh no, did you steal the horse after all? Or, otherwise stop speaking nonsense.

Sich zum Affen machen (to make yourself into a monkey): Best described as making a fool out of yourself. Remember the glass gazing the other night and the horses? Hmm …?

Kleinvieh macht auch Mist (small animals

also make manure): This means that even small things can add up to something big. Naturally, it can be used in a positive or negative sense, up to you to decide whether it’s a big win or a heap of dung.

Einen Putzfimmel haben (to have a cleaning frenzy): This literally translates to having a “cleaning mania” and we all enjoy a clean and tidy house or office. However, there are some that may overdo the chore, driving others up the famous palm tree again!

Tomaten auf den Augen haben (to have tomatoes on your eyes): Best described as not seeing (or wanting to see) something that is rather evident. On a more innocent note, you may be looking for something that is in plain sight.

Einen Korb geben (to give someone a basket): You might be attracted to someone (who has tomatoes on their eyes!), but who does not share the same feelings for you. He or she might then give you a basket, or in other words, turn down a date or a romantic offer.

Eine beleidigte Leberwurst spielen (acting like an offended liver sausage): If you received a basket from the one you admire, you might just turn into an offended sausage! This can also be true in daily life, if you just don’t get your way.

Jemanden Honig ums Maul schmieren (to smear honey around someone’s mouth): The best translation might be to “sweet talk” someone. Instead of instantly turning into an offended sausage, you might try this avenue instead to convince your sweetheart, you never know.

Schmetterlinge im Bauch haben (to have butterflies in your stomach): This means that you’ve fallen in love and are all jumpy and excited about a new romance.

Alles in Butter (everything in butter): This means that everything is alright, and things are going well! Maybe the honey helped a bit and you’re in seventh heaven with butterflies by now!

Butter bei die Fische lassen (leave butter with the fish): This means to not get upset about some minor issue or crying over spilled milk. Sometimes it just makes life easier to drop a certain topic and leave it to the fish.

Nicht alle Tassen im Schrank haben (not having all your cups in the cupboard): This can be used to describe someone who seems to be a bit crazy, or the English equivalent not having all your eggs in one basket.

Um den heißen Brei herumreden (talk around the hot mash): The best equivalent in English might be “to beat around the bush” or never get to the actual point. Many a politician is said to successfully use this technique.

Nur Bahnhof verstehen (to only understand train station): The English idiom “it’s all Greek to me” is just as confusing, but that is exactly what the term means. I don’t have a clue as to what you’re saying or what is going on and I’m completely puzzled.

Auf die Socken machen (let’s make us on the socks): This means to get ready and go out to do something, for example steal horses, climb up palm trees, search for missing cups, smear around honey or find

the train station. So, let’s make us on the socks and practice German idioms!

U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Carlos Orsini was promoted Tuesday, Nov. 4, in a ceremony held at the Sembach Chapel. Promoting Orsini was U.S. Army Col. Kelley Tomsett (left), chief of Dental Services for Medical Readiness Command, Europe. Since August 2023, Orsini oversaw Army dental readiness across Europe and Africa and will now become the senior enlisted leader for the Soldier Readiness Unit at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. During his tenure, Orsini led more than 400 dental personnel in Germany, Italy and Belgium, supporting over 40,000 U.S. Army Soldiers.

Security deposits for your rental in Germany

It is likely that you will be renting a place to live in while you are here in Germany, which means you will be dealing with a security deposit. The amount you may need to come up with can be substantial, especially when you take into account the current exchange rate. The amount of the deposit could be two months rent, but can be as high as three months rent. It cannot be more than three months rent by German law and it can be spread out over three months if you are able to negotiate that with your landlord. Additionally, your landlord is required to put the security amount in an interest bearing account. This must be a separate account from the landlord’s account where the rent is deposited so you are protected if the landlord runs into any financial problems (like bankruptcy).

Assuming there are no damages to the house or apartment, the landlord is required to pay the tenant the interest that was accrued during the time of the rental. If you stay in your dwelling for a number of years, this could actually amount to a decent sum of money (although nothing anyone will get rich from).

When it comes time to move out, the landlord will evaluate the rental to see what repairs may need to be done. Once the final inspection is done, the landlord must get a list of the items that need to be repaired in what is described as “a responsible time.” This is where it can get a little difficult if you are moving into a new place and need that security deposit returned quickly. “A responsible time” by German law says it could be anywhere from three to twelve months if assessing the damage is complicated. If it is straightforward and there are no real issues, the landlord is expected to get it back sooner.

If you are PCSing and will not be in Germany while the landlord is calculating the damages, you may want to consider finding a responsible party that can act as a legal representative or give a “power of attorney.”

With regard to damages, it is always good to do a complete review with your landlord of the condition of the dwelling. With today’s technology, you may want to take pictures of everything as the pictures taken on a smartphone will have a timestamp that can be very helpful.

You should get the advice of your housing office or a lawyer if you are not familiar with renting a house in Germany as there are many laws that are different than those of the United States.

Are you an American citizen living in and intending to stay in Germany, and is your better half a non-U.S. citizen? Let’s assume you are handling the business with the social security agency and the organization paying your retirement pay. If so, the following may be valuable information for your spouse.

Of course, we hope you are doing well, and you will continue to do well for a long time to come, nevertheless, we see the need to address a more unpleasant issue that comes up from time to time at the German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern. The GACO team has repeatedly helped or attempted to help German spouses of American citizens when it came to social security or retirement payments following a death.

If your spouse does not speak English or only to a minimal amount and has never been introduced to the paperwork and online matters you are handling regarding social security matters, retirement pay, health insurance or another American

insurance, this may become a real burden for your spouse/partner in the case he or she is left behind. But also, in the case your partner speaks English, here comes a suggestion your partner will greatly benefit from: The emergency folder.

This folder should contain:

1. Your personal data although it may seem obvious for family members: Your complete name, address and all telephone numbers, tax ID, SSN and other ID numbers, a current copy of your ID card, a copy of your birth certificate, a copy of your marriage certificate, if applicable.

2. Important contacts: Individuals who have played a role in your life. First and foremost, a list of emergency contacts to be informed about your condition in case of an emergency: for example, your parents, children, or partner. Then, you should list other important people who have played a more or less important role in your life. These could be the family doctor, important specialists, family

lawyer/notary, bank advisor, financial advisor/insurance broker

3. Powers of attorney/living will: All documents that give instructions or power of attorney to other people. In an emergency, first responders, for example, can find this important information for you right away and act accordingly. Please make sure that documents such as powers of attorney are always filed in the folder as originals, as copies often cannot be used by relatives. General powers of attorney, living will, bank powers of attorney, will

5. Financial data: Bank accounts, stock portfolios / bonds, investments, safe deposit boxes / valuables, loans / credits, real estate (land registry extract!)

6. Insurances: This should contain copies of all important insurance policies relating to illness, accidents, or life e.g. life insurance, death benefit insurance, accident insurance, private / compulsory health insurance, supplementary health insurance, retirement insurance.

7. Other important contracts: Rental

contract, maintenance contracts (heating, solar panels) or memberships in clubs.

8. Passwords: Nowadays, many things in the world happen digitally. Everyone leaves their mark in various sources on the internet: from social media such as Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok to posts in forums about hobbies.

In the “Passwords” section, you should store the user accounts that are most important to you, but at least the access data for your email addresses. Tip: Seal the archived passwords in a sealed envelope and stick it in the folder. In the unfortunate event of a break-in, you can see immediately whether the envelope has been opened (or stolen) and change the passwords straight away.

We are listing all of this to draw your attention to this issue that you may not have thought about before because there was no need to do so. The experiences of the GACO team have motivated us to write this article with the recommendation that you take some time to familiarize your partner with the above issues.

Your partner will benefit from this one day, and you might feel better knowing that you have an informed partner.

I feel this way about Baden-Baden. Without hesitation I jumped at the chance to visit this gorgeous town filled with day spas where kings and soldiers from all over Europe once came to heal and rejuvenate.

It was obvious at the beginning of my quest that I was not entirely prepared for all the beauty, serenity and relaxation oases offered throughout this heavenly town. For relaxation seekers, Baden-Baden offers amazing spa options, the Roman Bath Ruins, Himalayan Sea Salt Grottos and tranquil walking through this calming city nestled near the Black Forest National Park. Here’s what I found.

Caracalla Spa

The very popular Caracalla Spa is one of four spas that are very close to each other and have different options to choose from. This particular spa is amazing: they offer a gorgeous bathing area, famous German sauna treatments, all the wellness treatments you can handle, and of course some of Baden-Baden’s famous thermal waters.

Friedrichsbad

The Friedrichsbad, which is one of the oldest baths, was closed the day we went due to construction. However, I did find out it’s best to book your appointment about two weeks out. This bath is “a la natural” and more suitable for adults.

Ancient Roman Bath Ruins

Our first stop in town, after parking in an excellent recommended downtown parking garage, was the Ancient Roman Bath Ruins. Located underneath the Friedrichsbad, this original site was mindblowing. With our tour costing €4.50 complete with (English) audio guide, it was worth every penny.

While there, I learned about a Hypocaustum system, which was a Roman system in which quarry-style pillars transferred hot and cold water to a certain temperature and then pushed it through an aqueduct steam system. This bath house was believed to help soldiers and high ranking officers rehabilitate after war injuries.

The foundation is mostly intact, although pictures were not allowed. I completed the tour in just under an hour.

Himalayan Sea Salt Caves and Grotto – Salina

My younger daughter had done some research prior to our trip and found the Salina Salt Cave and Grotto. This magical hour of relaxation and restoration was exactly what this lady needed. The lovely owner led us to the Grotto where we completely relaxed (insert snoring sound effects here).

This family-friendly paradise helps individuals recover from asthmatic or respiratory issues, and is also ideal for those who suffer from burn-out. With our comfortable clothing on, we wrapped up in blankets and peacefully zoned out in comfy chairs. The sea salt content is 40 times higher than the salt of the North Sea. Built with salts from the Dead Sea and the Himalayas, the caves were a spectacular sight to see as well.

Walks Through Town

After our sea salt mellow session, we walked through the town and found the Faberge Museum, the theatre, the Stadt Museum, the Kongresshaus and the Kurhaus. Walking along Lichtentaller Allee was one of my favorite things to do. It was a magical experience, and the town of Baden-Baden does not disappoint.

The garden and park of the Kurhaus is where you can catch a horse and buggy historical tour of the city. It also has a lovely assortment of gift stores and shops that dot this magical garden.

For those who are a little lucky at cards, you can also try your hand at Baden-Baden’s casino. I’ve never had any kind of luck with that, even with the slots, so I just buy shoes instead.

How to Get To Baden-Baden

By car, Baden-Baden is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes south of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 15 minutes west of Stuttgart, and just under 2 hours south of Wiesdaen. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
