The importance of a good meal cannot be understated. There’s something about sitting down to a plate that’s been thoughtfully made. The aroma pulls you in first, setting the tone before you’ve even taken a bite. This past Sunday was when that importance was made clear at the Rheinland Inn Dining Facility.

Professional Chef and host of Food Network’s show “Restaurant: Impossible,” Robert Irvine, recently visited Ramstein AB and specifically the Rheinland Inn DFAC making an appearance in the kitchen with some new meals as well.

As Month of the Military Child draws to a close, the story of families joining Airmen overseas offers a powerful reminder that readiness has always extended beyond the flightline. Eighty years ago, on April 28, 1946, 20 adults and ten children stepped ashore in Bremerhaven, Germany, beginning a journey that would reshape the American military presence in Europe. From there, they traveled to Wiesbaden, reuniting with loved ones.

In the immediate aftermath of World War II, U.S. forces in Europe were largely unaccompanied. Yet even as demobilization efforts reduced troop numbers, planners within U.S. Air Forces in Europe recognized a different kind of need. By early 1946, logistics leaders were already exploring how to house families, anticipating that more than 1,000 dependents could arrive before the year’s end. Policies soon followed, including guidance on procuring and managing household goods, laying the groundwork for the support systems still in place today.

The arrival of families marked more than a logistical milestone; it signaled a turning point. What had begun as a temporary occupation force was evolving into a sustained presence. As stability gradually returned to postwar Germany, leaders understood that strengthening the force meant reuniting it. Families would no longer remain an ocean away; they would become part of the mission.

Over the decades, that decision has shaped communities across the USAFE area of responsibility. From the early days of the Cold War (when families lived on installations as far as Morocco and Libya) to today’s enduring partnerships in Europe and Africa, dependents have remained central to the mission. They anchor communities, strengthen relationships with host nations, and provide the resilience that enables Airmen to focus on the fight.

Eighty years later, the legacy of those first arrivals continues. Behind every mission is a network of support — spouses, children, and families — whose presence reinforces readiness and underscores a simple truth: the strength of USAFE-AFAFRICA has always been built not only by those in uniform, but by those who stand beside them.

From warehouse to live-saving care: 86 MDSS in action

The difference between life and death depends on seconds and in a warehouse tucked away, Airmen assigned to the 86th Medical Support Squadron are working around the clock to ensure that life-saving medical equipment is ready before that moment arrives.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Cameron Wood, a biomedical equipment technician, works to keep that capability ready.

“We are here as the Global Gateway to be able to get supplies out the door to our service members downrange,” Wood said. “We ensure that they’re safe, functional and ready to deploy at any time.”

From defibrillators to surgical equipment, each item is maintained on strict inspection cycles.

“If we fail to do our jobs, people downrange may not have the proper medical care necessary to save someone’s life,” he said.

Readiness is critical at Ramstein, where medical assets and supplies must be prepared to rapidly deploy in support of global operations. The 86th MDSS maintains high levels of readiness, enabling teams to respond immediately to contingencies and establish surgical care in deployed environments.

“We’re completely tailored to support a medical facility and make sure they’re fully stocked and ready to support the mission no matter what,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Christopher Keeley, 86th MDSS medical logistics supervisor.

The unit ensures there is no delay when missions arise by pre-building deployment packages such as surgical kits through war reserve materiel.

“If we didn’t exist, they’d have to build those kits from scratch,” Keeley said. “That creates a delay where teams aren’t ready. Because we’re here, it’s, ‘here’s your equip-

Despite their vital role and impact in operations, much of the work remains out of sight.

“We’re kind of a thankless job,” he said. “People don’t notice us unless something goes wrong. If we’re doing our job right, everything just works.”

The reward, however, comes in understanding the broader mission behind the routine.

The tempo remains high at Ramstein where operations depend on speed and precision; that unseen work ensures that when the call comes, life-saving care is already on its way.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, German firefighters unite to battle autobahn brush fire

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz firefighters joined forces with German emergency responders April 26 to contain a large brush fire that threatened the A6/A63 autobahn interchange.

When the fire broke out in north Kaiserslautern, flames and heavy smoke forced the closure of the major traffic route. German firefighters at the Kaiserslautern Main Dispatch Center issued a request for support, and the garrison’s Directorate of Emergency Services responded without delay.

DES Deputy Fire Chief Robert Womble led the response, deploying Engine-12 from Fire Station1 Kaiserslautern East alongside Hook37, a 7,000-liter water tender from Miesau Army Depot.

“Our crews were ready to move,” said Womble. “We train for these situations and working with our German partners, we were able to get the fire under control and keep it from spreading further.”

Garrison fire crews were initially staged at the nearby ZAK industrial complex before being integrated into the host nation’s incident command. Working side-by-side, American and German firefighters carried out water shuttle operations and attacked the fire from the hillside and along the autobahn.

The scale of the fire and dense smoke kept the A6/A63 interchange closed until late Sunday night.

Personnel on scene included Womble; Engine-12 Crew Chief Markus Roughton, Driver Operator Rafael Kuhnert and Firefighter Manuel Schwoerer; and Hook-37 firefighters Martin Sauer and Michael Laufer.

The response reflects ongoing cooperation between USAG Rheinland-Pfalz and local German emergency services. In 2024, the garrison’s DES formalized a mutual aid agreement with several surrounding communities including Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, to better prepare coordinated response efforts during emergencies such as fires and floods.

Public Health Command Europe offers guidance for PCSing with pets

A permanent change of station is stressful enough, but moving with your pet can add a whole new layer of anxiety if you aren’t prepared. To make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your furry companions, Public Health Command Europe’s veterinary services has shared some essential advice.

The most important step is starting early.

“As soon as you know your travel details, contact your local Veterinary Treatment Facility to assist with your upcoming pet travel process,” said Sgt. Danielle Peoples, an animal care specialist and non-commissioned officer in charge at Veterinary Medical Center Europe.

She noted that some countries, such as Japan, Korea, or the United Kingdom, have specific import requirements that can take over six months to prepare. Before beginning the process, ensure your pets are registered with your local VTF

and have an active veterinarianclient-patient relationship so their medical records are current.

While exact documentation varies by destination, you will generally need to secure the following:

• Rabies Vaccination: Proof of an up-to-date vaccine is mandatory. This can be a rabies certificate issued by an on-base VTF or an official European

Union Pet Passport from a licensed off-base veterinarian. Note: Pets must be at least 12 weeks old to receive the vaccine. If it is their first rabies shot, they must wait 21 to 30 days before traveling, depending on the vaccine label and destination country.

• Microchip: Your pet must be microchipped with an

ISO-compatible brand.

• Health Certificate: Foreign countries and many U.S. states require a health certificate issued within 10 days of arrival. These can be issued by an on- or off-post veterinarian. If traveling back to the U.S., the certificate must be legible, accurate, complete, and in English.

• CDC Dog Import Form: Dogs traveling to the U.S. must have this form completed prior to travel and must be at least six months old at the time of entry.

• Acclimation Certificate: Airlines may require a veterinarian-issued acclimation statement for flight. Pet owners should confirm this requirement directly with their airline.

Because summer is peak PCS season, on-post veterinary clinics book up quickly. “I recommend making your appointment well in advance to ensure your pet can be seen at the appropriate time,” Peoples advised.

Preparing for Travel Logistics

Beyond medical clearance, your method of travel may dictate additional rules. Always check directly with your airline or shipping carrier to confirm their specific pet policies. As a proactive measure, crate train your pets early and keep airline-approved crates ready in the event of an emergency PCS or non-combatant evacuation operation.

Ultimately, it is the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal meets all requirements for the destination country. Failing to do so can cause significant difficulties and delays upon arrival.

Ramstein Lady Rams take flight for historic MBA Championship debut

The Ramstein Lady Rams are heading to the 2026 Military Basketball Association Championship Games, May 1-3, at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This is the first time a women’s team from Europe will play in the tournament.

The team is composed of women from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and is coached by U.S. Air Force Capt. Pedro Malachi, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing strategic plans director.

“The No. 1 reason I’m excited is this really highlights the importance of women’s sports,” said Malachi, who’s been coaching since 1996. “This gives the Lady Rams a platform to show what they’ve been doing, even when they didn’t think it was possible.”

Malachi explained last year they didn’t have enough participants, and this year started the same way.

“I said give me the program, I’ll take care of it, and now we have around 20 ladies consistently showing up to play,” he said.

Since then, the RLR won three

tournaments securing their entrance to the MBA Championships.

“The benefit of a women’s team is it gives female athletes a voice or platform,” said Malachi. “It gives them the opportunity to still have sports and do what they love, even when they’re wearing the uniform.”

The championship weekend is not solely focused on basketball, the event also emphasizes mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The RLR can attest how the team supports their overall wellbeing.

“This is a good place to have positive energy when there is negative energy around the world,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Disa Brown, 86th Communication Squadron and RLR point guard. “It’s a moment to have fun and do what I love.”

“This is my outlet when I’m sad or missing family,” added U.S. Army Sgt. Makayla Murray, U.S. Transportation Command Patient Movements Requirement CenterEast and RLR captain. “I’ve been overseas for five years, so basketball is my family,”

Being part of the Ramstein Lady Rams has benefits that extend beyond the court.

“We meet different people from different branches, as well as spous-

es,” said Brown. “I’ve made good connections, so I know who to contact when I need assistance.”

Murray added that the team helps her with physical training, as running is heavily incorporated into their practices.

“It also helps me with my

speech skills,” Murray continued.

“Since I know a lot about ball, I took a leadership role, and I help when the coach is absent.”

The Ramstein Lady Rams are putting in the work to ensure they are ready to represent Europe this weekend.

“I feel we’re prepared,” said Malachi. “One element we can’t prepare for is the time zone and elevation. Acclimatization is something our team will get through, but we have the skills and athleticism to succeed as a team.”

America reaches Kaiserslautern

As we continue to trace Kaiserslautern’s vivid past, today we turn to the last century and contemporary developments, modern chapters that are as central to the city’s identity as Emperor Barbarossa, its market and city rights, and its industrial innovations.

Kaiserslautern was heavily bombed during the last two years of World War II based on its strategic and logistical importance. The single most destructive Allied air raid on the city occurred on Sept. 28, 1944, when heavy bombing, reported as about 909 tons of ordnance that day, left large parts of the built-up area in ruins and contributed to the city being more than 85 percent destroyed by the end of the war. The railway yards and textile and industrial plants were primary targets, which amplified damage to the urban core.

U.S. military presence in and around Kaiserslautern began with the liberation on March 20, 1945, when U.S. Third Army units entered and secured the city during Operation Undertone. It has since grown into the Kaiserslautern Military Community, shaping the economy, infrastructure and identity of the city and county for eight decades.

Military Bases

During the postwar occupation, U.S. Forces established bases, depots and housing in the region to support NATO and deterrence missions. Ramstein and Sembach Air Bases were founded in the early 1950’s. Army installations such as Pulaski, Rhein Ordnance Barracks and Miesau Depot were established. Other already existing kasernes such as Panzer, Kleber and Daenner, were handed over to U.S. Forces.

Landstuhl Regional Hospital was officially opened in April 1953 along with a housing area. In addition, a small housing area allocated for higher ranking U.S. Army officers was built in Fliegerstrasse, close to downtown Kaiserslautern. In the meantime, the area has been cleared and replaced with modern complexes for the German populace.

Kaiserslautern’s

West End

Construction of the Vogelweh Housing area began in the early 1950s. Local histories record summer 1950 as the start date as part of the U.S. military’s postwar stationing and infrastructure build-out in West Germany. It was built to accommodate service members and their families assigned to Kaiserslautern and nearby installations, Vogelweh was planned as a self-contained community with schools and kindergartens, dining facilities, AFN radio and television, a commissary and Base Exchange, plus recreational centers and community spaces.

Initially dominated by large multi-story housing complexes, the area saw phased upgrades over the decades. Mid-1980s renovations added larger wet-cell bathrooms, and security measures after 9/11 enclosed what had been an open neighborhood. In 2004 a teardown-and-new-build program replaced many older blocks with modern townhouses, giving residents more comfort and living space and further shaping Vogelweh into a permanent, family-oriented installation.

The 2004 program was part of a larger plan to build 855 new townhouses across Ramstein, Vogelweh and Landstuhl; the new two-story units were designed as duplexes/triplexes/ quads, primarily threeand four-bedroom homes with family rooms, garages and fenced yards. According to a rough estimate, more than 35,000 families have resided in Vogelweh housing since the 1950’s. Kaiserslautern Military Community

The original “Creek Swap Agreement” in 1975 gave rise to the term KMC and formally created the Kaiserslautern Military Community to coordinate Army and Air Force facilities across the region. The Creek Swap memorandum stipulated that USAFE would appoint an Air Force general to represent U.S. interests to the German city government and law-enforcement authorities. A 1993 revision narrowed the language to state that USAFE would have the lead for the KMC, and the 86th Airlift Wing Commander was named the Community Commander. In December 2010 responsibility shifted to the Third Air Force com-

mander; the position is currently held by Major General Paul D. Moga.

Rock ‘n’ Roll and Ice Cream

The U.S. military presence around Kaiserslautern reshaped everyday civilian life. In the early 1950s rock ’n’ roll rolled in with Coca-Cola, hamburgers and American ice cream, and locals embraced the new tastes and sounds. Bars and dance halls popped up across the city, weekend parties grew wilder, and Steinstrasse, from Martinsplatz to Mainzertor, eventually earned an “off-limits” reputation because of the raucous crowds.

Kaiserslautern’s civilians profited from the U.S. presence, which reached up to 88,000 Americans in the late 1980’s. With so many service members and families in the area, local residents found steady customers and new opportunities. When housing ran short, German families opened their doors, renting to Americans, making friends with neighbors and landlords, and weaving new social ties. Shops and service businesses sprang up to meet demand, selling everything from cars and furniture to household goods, while supermarkets thrived moving both German staples and American favorites. Hospitality and leisure boomed. Gasthäuser, restaurants, bars, and hotels raced to cater to American tastes, lifting the local economy and helping rebuild a region still recovering from war.

Weddings, children and zugereischde Families and long-term ties followed, as many service members married local partners.

Up to 4,000 military and civilian retirees are known to have opted to stay in the local area and are sometimes referred to as “zugereischde” in Palatinate dialect,

meaning new resident. In addition, since 1953 more than 58,000 babies of U.S. or German-American parentage were born in Landstuhl, including a few who later became public figures such as LeVar Burton (Star Wars), Rob Kelly Thomas (Match Box Twenty) and Reggie Williams (National Football League).

On the other hand, over 450 infants that passed shortly after birth were laid to rest at the Kindergraves site at Kaiserslautern main cemetery and are commemorated in an annual ceremony.

Economic Impact

The economic impact of the Kaiserslautern Military Community is substantial. Its annual contribution to the local economy is estimated at $2.26 billion, driven primarily by three factors: KMC payroll, expenditures on construction, services, and materials, and the estimated value of jobs created. The U.S. presence, roughly 50,000 Americans living and working in the region, makes the West Palatinate home to the largest American military community outside the United States, and that scale of activity underpins local businesses, public revenues, and employment.

To wrap this chapter of history up: The U.S. military presence since 1945 has transformed Kaiserslautern from a war-torn city into a transatlantic hub whose economy, infrastructure and identity remain deeply intertwined with American Forces. Some residents of the Westpfalz region lovingly refer to the area as “Klein Amerika”!

Network Europe celebrate Staff Appreciation Day

Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe Headquarters honored their military servicemembers and civilian employees during a Staff Appreciation Day at Sembach Kaserne Apr. 30. The hosts for the event were U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud and Command Sgt. Maj. Kalani Kalili. The special event was an opportunity for the command team to show their appreciation and gratitude to the headquarters personnel for all their hard work and dedication to the organization.

Medical Readiness Command, Europe deploys medical team to observe French Military Orion 26 Exercise

FRANCE – U.S. Army Medical Readiness Command, Europe recently deployed a team of medical personnel to central France to observe the French led Orion 26 Exercise, the largest military exercise conducted by the French military since the Cold War. More than 12,500 mostly French troops took part in the three-month drill designed to prepare for highintensity warfare in Europe.

The Orion 26 Exercise, which ran until April 30, involved 25 ships including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, 140 aircraft, 1,200 drones and troops from 24 partner countries to include the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates.

While the bulk of the Orion 26 Exercise focused on Large-Scale Combat Operations, a significant portion of the exercise involved combat casualty care, treatment and evacuation of simulated casualties from the battlefield.

Leading the U.S. contingent of medical observers was U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Heather O’Mara, Assistant Chief of Staff, Support Operations for Medical Readiness Command, Europe.

“Working shoulder-to-shoulder with our French military medical counterparts gave us unique insights into their approaches to combat casualty care and patient evacuation,” said O’Mara. “Understanding their methodologies for triaging and moving patients from the point of injury ensures we are better prepared to save lives together in any potential future large scale combat operations.”

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces described Orion 26 as “a major event in the French operational preparation for high-intensity scenarios” aimed at preparing forces for “complex situations in multiple, varied, and contested environments.”

While the U.S. and French military medical personnel may wear different uniforms, use different

equipment and speak different languages, they both share a common goal — providing comfort, care and compassion for the wounded, ill and injured.

According to a French military official involved in planning for the medical portion of the exercise, the objectives of the were:

• Rapid\lifesaving medical response: Simulate scenarios with significant casualties in high-intensity\dynamic combat zones.

• Interoperability testing: Assess the ability of French and British medical teams to operate seamlessly under joint command structures.

• Field hospital and surgical adaptation: Evaluate portable surgical units for extended operations under operational stress\including mobility and communication constraints.

• Resilience under realistic conflict scenarios: Emphasize support in long-duration complex operations with fluctuating

security contexts\mirroring the stresses of real conflicts.

“ORION 26 provided a highly realistic, complex large-scale operations environment that effectively tested multinational military medical capabilities,” said Master Sgt. William Carlyle, Senior Operations Sergeant for Medical Readiness Command, Europe G37. “Because no single nation possesses the organic capacity to sustain prolonged LSCO medical requirements independently, seamless interoperability is an absolute operational necessity and must be a training objective in these type exercises.”

According to a senior U.S. military medical official, the French military has several highly effective aspects of combat casualty care and force integration that should be considered by allies and partners.

“It was interesting to note that the French military approach to simulated casualty generation utilizes actual front-line troops, such as infantry, rather than isolated role

players or manikins,” added Carlyle. “This concept forces every warfighting function to tangibly experience the operational impact of losing personnel to casualty care, casualty evacuation, and escort duties for the wounded. Furthermore, these live role players are actively coached by observer/controllers to portray specific trauma, adding critical realism to the exercise.”

Oversight and planning of the medical portion of Orion 26 Exercise was provided by the French Defense Central Health Service. This organization is responsible for medical and sanitary support to the French Armed Forces and all institutions placed under the authority of the French Ministry of Armed Forces. It ensures adequate support for French operations in overseas theatres and provides hospital care services, administers medicals for military personnel, and gives expertise in disease prevention, and medical, dental, pharmaceutical, paramedical and veterinary research and education.

More than 50 servicemembers, civilians and veterans from across U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz crossed the stage to celebrate their academic achievements during the garrison’s Army Continuing Education System Graduation Recognition Ceremony, held April 24 at the Tiger Theater on Sembach Kaserne.

The ACES graduation ceremony serves as an opportunity for graduates who are far from their institutions of higher learning to participate in a graduation ceremony, complete with pomp and circumstance, walking the stage, and ceremonial “turning of the tassel” from right to left to signify the transition from a candidate to a graduate.

Each graduate arrived at this moment through long hours of study balanced with the demands of their day-to-day responsibilities.

Command Sgt. Maj. Randy Rivera, the garrison’s senior enlisted advisor, pointed to the daily choices behind their success.

“You chose to log in when you were tired,” he said. “You chose to study when others were resting. You chose to grow when others took it easy, and that matters. Today, you’re winners.”

Rivera encouraged the graduates to carry that same drive forward as they move beyond their academic goals.

“There’s going to be a gap in your schedule,” said Rivera. “Fill it with that same excellence — helping others and striving to be your best.”

Throughout the ceremony, graduates exchanged smiles across the room while speakers recognized the effort it took to reach this milestone.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael Edwards, internal control manager for the 45th Finance Center, said the moment felt surreal as he celebrated the completion of his Master of Business Administration degree in Project Management from Columbia Southern University.

“Walking across that stage symbolizes the dedication and perseverance that brought me to this point,” he said. In the audience, his children watched. They were part of the reason Edwards kept going even as the workload grew.

“As a dad, having my children here to witness this day fills me with pride and reminds me why I never give up,” he said. “I’m grateful for the support system that helped me reach this achievement.”

“Keep moving forward”

It’s a simple phrase but for U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Isai Bastian, 37th Aircraft Maintenance Unit scheduling office non-commissioned officer in charge, it is the anchor that grounds him through 12-hour shifts, leadership growth, varied operational requirements and his aspirations to commission as an officer in the USAF.

Squad Competition. These 7th Engineer Brigade Soldiers completed a week of physically and mentally demanding events designed to replicate conditions Soldiers may face in large-scale combat operations. For them, success came down to discipline, preparation, and trust within the team.

Bastian believes that while the mission is constant, the way a leader treats people is a choice.

“Work is always going to be work but we could do something to make it better,” Bastian said. “It’s not always going to be fun, but it can be enjoyable if we are kind to each other and feel safe within a healthy work environment.”

The perspective he brings to the 37th AMU was built on a moment of unexpected redirection. “After being stateside for five years at

a unit I’ve seen multiple people retire from, I never thought I’d leave the unit let alone the states,” said Bastian. “Getting orders to Ramstein put a hold on my personal ambitions because my wife and I wouldn’t have the same support system overseas. Looking back, that took more of a toll on me than I had originally accepted.”

Now, Bastian and his wife, Kate, had to adapt and build a community outside of their expectations.

That ability became the pivoting point within his leadership. Today, Bastian manages the complex visual schedules and coordination required to keep the 37th AMU mission-ready.

“Staff Sgt. Bastian is the type of leader who gives his people the room they need to grow,” said Airman 1st Class Baldemar Campos, 86th Maintenance Operations Squadron maintenance scheduler. “He is the type of leader who has pushed me to be a better person in and out of work, always putting his people’s

needs before his own.”

Bastian put this philosophy into practice by founding “Wings of Wisdom,” a program that bridges the gap between junior enlisted members and senior leadership. During one session, Bastian was paired with an Airman struggling with a massive workload.

“The questions I asked assured him that not everyone has it figured out and it’s okay to seek mentorship,” Bastian said. “Once that happened, he found his voice. He spent the rest of the session actively listening and writing down advice to take back and build upon.”

Now, Bastian looks to strive for his next goal: to commission. He is currently finalizing his package for United States Air Force Officer Training School, driven by a desire to emulate the leaders who meet Airmen where they’re at.

“At the end of the day, it’ll turn out all right, but there’s work that goes into that,” Bastian said. “Keep moving forward.”

Some of the dishes prepared in this fashion were an espresso roast with chimichurri sauce, seasoned potato wedges and grits with shrimp, all coming together to form a symphony of flavors lingering with every bite.

“It’s not a dining facility, it’s a restaurant, and we designed it like a restaurant,” said Irvine.

Another great reason to visit: the region hosts Eifel National Park, which is captivating, wild, and historic.

On the Wilderness Trail

Eifel National Park’s straightforwardly named Wilderness Trail is special. Rare for this part of Germany, it offers an 85-kilometer trail that can be finished in four days. Which means, of course, that backpackers can take the time to immerse themselves in meadows and forests while sleeping under the stars.

Walking the Wilderness Trail also allows visitors to get a deep sense of what makes the park special. Founded in 2004, it is technically a “National Park in development,” which means that the land in the park is in the process of reverting to full wilderness. The park’s motto, in fact, is “Let nature be nature.”

Why is this cool? For starters, a big part of the park was once the Vogelsang Military Training Area, used by NATO forces until 2005. Thus, it was not wildly natural. Which makes the park’s motto all the more meaningful, since nature is recovering rapidly right now. Forests are growing back. Birds and mammals returning to forests. It’s happening fast, too: nearly 60 percent of the park has returned to its native state. This is a great chance to see what “nature being nature” looks like.

However, don’t let the wilderness tempt you away from the trail. Since this was once a military training area, there is still unexploded ordinance in the area. Trail markers are clear and warnings are frequent. Make sure you pay attention to them!

The beauty of a dark sky

Have you ever seen a map of Europe at night? This is a very well lighted continent,

which isn’t a bad thing. But it does mean that we rarely get to see a lot of stars when we live here.

Not so in Eifel National Park, which was recently classified as the first International Dark Sky Park in Germany. Nighttime visitors (on clear nights, of course) are in for a treat. You’ll see stars that you didn’t know existed, as well as the full beauty of the Milky Way. There is also an observatory nearby that regularly organizes astronomy workshops, which can be a lot of fun for families. It’s also illuminating in different ways: sometimes it’s reassuring to know that there’s a massive, dazzling universe out there.

Eifel National Park in a day

For day trippers, the park is a great choice. Admission to the park is free. You can take your time driving through it. You can also bring your bike or a good pair of walking shoes, since there are more than 200 kilometers of wilderness trails. The landscapes are fantastic. You’ll find rivers, forests, meadows, rolling hills, and occasionally challenging walks.

There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, too. The park is home to red deer, wild boar, wild cats (a threatened species, and super cool to spot if you can find one… but don’t worry, they’re not much larger than house cats), rare bats, lizards, birds, and much more.

There are also a variety of activities for families, including guided walking tours, a junior ranger program, and a “Dreams of Wilderness” exhibition (with an entrance fee) that is open daily. The park website offers maps and tips for visitors.

Getting to Eifel National Park

By car, Eifel National Park is approximately 2.5 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and about 4.5 hours from Stuttgart.

It’s that time of the year again: Nature is turning into a nursery! Spring is the beginning of breeding and rearing time for many wild animals in which they look for a calm and protected environment to raise their young ones. Disturbances can change their behavior pattern, and it could lead to neglecting of the offspring in extreme cases. The local hunting community therefore is appealing to everyone to stay on the paths if they walk in the forests or through fields. People walking their dogs are asked to keep them on a leash to stop them from impulse hunting. The President of the hunting

community appeals to the people by saying “In every dog there is a wolf. They have a hunting instinct no matter how good they were trained.” Dogs hunting on an instinct would be a great disturbance and could lead to neglecting of the offspring.

Another important thing to know when walking around at this time of the year is that many animals leave their offspring in protected places while gathering food. The young ones are sometimes alone for most of the day, and hikers might mistake the animals as lost and left behind. That is not the case. Many furry parents are close by and just hiding from the human scent. If you come across such an animal, do not try to pet it and remove

yourself from the place quickly and quietly. The offspring might be neglected if the parents smell human scent on them and can no longer recognize them as theirs.

Bunnies and deer are only some of the animals who leave their offspring in protected hollows in the ground or in areas that are shielded. If you are not sure if the animal is just waiting or has been neglected, the right thing to do is to contact the local hunting community and they will check on it. Please do not act on your own as it could lead to neglected offspring. Contact GACO if you need to get in touch with the local hunting community.

Many communities use small drones, or unmanned aerial systems, to scan fields for young animals before farmers begin plowing. If you see one overhead early in the morning, there’s no need to worry. Fawns and other offspring often remain motionless in the middle of a field and can be injured by a plow. In some areas, volunteers go out at dawn to collect young animals in baskets, protect them while the field is worked, and return them afterward.

The breeding and rearing time can last from March through July.
