Military working dogs take to water in unique training event

More than 20 military working dogs from five kennels across Germany traded their usual training grounds for the pool deck during a first-of-its-kind water familiarization and enrichment event hosted by the Veterinary Medical Center Europe.

The training, held at the Ramstein Aquatics Center, brought together U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force military working dog handlers, veterinarians and veterinary technicians for a collaborative day focused on building water confidence and expanding the dogs’ environmental exposure.

Sgt. Danielle Peoples, a veterinary technician at Veterinary Medical Center Europe, helped organize the event, said the goal was both simple and impactful.

“We [Veterinary Medical Center Europe] are bringing the MWDs together to do an enrichment event to get them familiar with aquatics, as many of them have not been in water before,” Peoples said.

While military working dogs are highly trained in detection and patrol work, many have limited exposure to aquatic environments.

According to Peoples, that gap presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

“It's a great enrichment tool

to get them exposure to water and have fun outside of the kennels,” she said.

For working dogs accustomed to structured training days, the opportunity to engage in a new environment serves more than just recreational value. It enhances mental stimulation, builds confidence and prepares them for the unpredictable nature of future missions.

“It’s something that the kennels can take back to their home stations and possibly do in the future,” said Peoples. “We never know what type of missions they'll go on, therefore it’s beneficial to get them exposed to different types of things.”

The importance of that preparation is rooted in the diverse mission set military working dogs support. From installation security to overseas deployments, these dogs are critical assets.

Staff Sgt. Aaron Stevens, a military working dog handler with the 525th Military Working Dog Detachment located in Wiesbaden, emphasized the scope of their responsibilities.

“MWDs provide force protection, whether it be narcotics or explosive detection and downrange support for units that are in austere environments,” Stevens said.

Given that broad mission profile, adaptability is essential.

For Stevens, the training proved

particularly eye-opening with his smaller dog navigating deeper water than expected.

“I thought today's training event was really successful. It was surprising to see her [the MWD] drive with controlled aggression, especially pushing her limits through the water. I thought it would be a challenge for her,” he said. “It was nice seeing her drive to push through as a smaller dog, where the water is really deep on her, just to keep going after the target.”

Handlers worked with their dogs in controlled scenarios, encouraging them to move through water toward training aids and targets. The focus remained on building confidence rather than perfection, allowing the dogs to problem-solve and rely on their training and bond with their handlers.

For Veterinary Medical Center Europe, hosting the training marked a milestone. It was the first time the facility organized an aquatic familiarization event of this scale, reinforcing its commitment not only to medical readiness but also to preventative care and enrichment.

Beyond the splashes and retrieves, the day underscored a larger message: maintaining a mission-ready military working dog requires more than routine drills. It demands creativity, col-

laboration and proactive exposure to the unexpected.

As Peoples noted, missions can vary widely and environments can change without warning. By introducing water familiarization now, teams are reducing risk later.

The success of the event has already sparked conversations about making aquatic enrichment a recurring opportunity across Germany-based kennels. If replicated at other installations, the

impact could extend well beyond one afternoon at the pool.

For the dogs, it was a day of new challenges and visible excitement. For the handlers and veterinary teams, it was confirmation that innovation in training can strengthen readiness across the force.

And for more than 20 military working dogs paddling confidently through unfamiliar waters, it was proof that preparation sometimes starts with taking the plunge.

HoloLens enables remote joint inspection throughout 521 AMOW

A joint inspection is an important part of preparing cargo for transport on military aircraft. Nearly every day there are aerial porters in the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing spread across multiple areas of responsibility who inspect pallets of equipment and supplies to confirm proper packaging, weight, balance and preparation, ensuring the cargo can be safely transported via aircraft.

But what if these Airmen couldn’t inspect the cargo in person?

That’s the question that the 725th Air Mobility Squadron has been trying to answer since 2021. HoloLens, an augmented reality headset, enables aerial port experts to aid and guide technicians by looking through their eyes. They have demonstrated how the

augmented reality capability can be used to increase Rapid Global Mobility in a variety of maintenance, air transportation, and command and control scenarios, increasing the speed of maneuver to sustain Joint force lethality across the competition continuum.

Stationed at Aviano Air Base, Italy, the 724th Air Mobility Squadron regularly partners with users in the region to prepare their cargo for forward deployment. They received an opportunity to work with the 173d Airborne Brigade to perform a joint inspection remotely using the HoloLens. To best test the utility of the device, the 724th AMS worked alongside the 725th AMS, the 521st AMOW’s foremost authority on the technology.

“We spent a year working with the manufacturer and experimenting with different add-ons to figure out the right

software and process we needed to get to where we are today,” said Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Sewejkis, 725th AMS superintendent. “Now it’s plug and play. We can connect anywhere just using the HoloLens, a wifi hotspot, and a laptop.”

From a conference room back at Aviano, Airman 1st Class Delaney Boehm, a 724th aircraft services specialist, guided the personnel at Vicenza through the JI, circling areas on her screen that she wanted them to focus on.

“It was a great experience that showcased our squadrons’ innovative approach to conducting routine inspections and allowed a technician in the field to work hands-free while receiving real time guidance from a remote expert,” said Staff Sgt. Devin Robert, 725th AMS NCOIC of network operations.

“The ability to highlight individual objects

in the technician’s field of view goes beyond the capabilities of a traditional video call.”

Although the remote JI was just a proof of concept, it demonstrated flexibility and ease of use to Joint partners and to the headquarter Air Mobility Command staff.

“There is a push in the air transportation career field to explore new ways of accomplishing our mission, irrespective of geographical constraints,” said Lt. Col. Katherine Wilson, 724th AMS commander.

“We tried the HoloLens alongside a traditional video call, and the immersive hand-free component of the HoloLens experience streamlined communication and overall speed of the inspection.”

Leveraging this new technology, the 725th AMS is continuing to refine processes and enabling mission execution despite the geographical separation within the 521st AMOW.

Air Force modernizes Physical Fitness Program to bolster readiness, long-term health

The Air Force announced an update to its Physical Fitness Readiness Program in a Directive Type Memorandum introducing new standards and scoring models designed to better align with the demands of modern warfare and promote the longterm health of every Airman.

The modernized program is anchored in scientifically grounded health measures and a more rigorous assessment model. The goal is to enhance warfighter readiness by encouraging Airmen to build durable fitness habits that support sustained, career-long performance.

Fitness Assessments. These adjustments are intentional and directly align with the program’s renewed emphasis on long-term health, readiness, and overall warfighter effectiveness.

“Airmen are the heart of the Air Force, and their readiness is essential to mission success.”
Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe

“Our new standards are designed to help Airmen build fitness habits that will serve them throughout their careers and hopefully a long life,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach. “This update is not just about increasing the physical fitness test standards; it’s about ensuring our warfighters are fit, ready, and prioritizing their long-term health.”

In conjunction with the updated program, score charts have been updated with increased minimums for each scored component, as well as separate charts now available for Occupationally Specific Physical

To ensure a smooth transition, the Air Force implemented a baseline window for Airmen to take diagnostic tests starting March 1. This period is designed to give Airmen time to understand the new standards, assess their current performance against the updated charts, and adjust their training focus before scoring becomes official on July 1. The baseline period will also provide the data required to assess and refine score charts in advance of full implementation of the new standards. Airmen who complete the Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment during the baseline period may elect to record their diagnostic test score as an official fitness test score. This may be especially beneficial for Airmen in cold-weather locations who wish to align their next due-date to a time when weather is more conducive to outdoor testing in their region.

Airmen may reference the PFRA Due Date Matrix on MyFSS in the Knowledge Base application to learn more about testing timelines.

Body composition will return as a scored

component assessed in the PFRA. Airmen may elect to take this component of the test up to five duty days before assessing the remaining PFRA components.

Airmen and commanders are encouraged to make full use of diagnostic testing during this baseline period. This phase will provide valuable data to ensure the updated PFRP is implemented in a manner that is fair, accurate, and effective across the force. To support the force through this transition, a robust set of resources will be available:

• Master Fitness Leaders: These trained experts will be available at installations to guide unit-level Peer Fitness Leaders and Airmen through safe and effective conditioning, reconditioning, and adaptive fitness programs.

• Warfighter Fitness Playbook: This guide offers detailed guidance on workouts, recovery strategies, sleep optimization, and nutrition—all interconnected elements essential for sustained performance.

• The Pregnancy & Postpartum Performance Training Guide: To ensure comprehensive support for all Airmen, this guide provides tailored

physical training and wellness recommendations for pregnant and postpartum Airmen.

The certification of the 2-mile run tracks to ensure all Air Force tracks meet official standards is in progress. Final guidance on measurement specifications (e.g. meters, feet, yards, etc.) will be published in AFMAN 36-2905.

“Airmen are the heart of the Air Force, and their readiness is essential to mission success,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe. “Our new standards are designed to prepare them for the demands of today and the future fight. They give every one of our Airmen an opportunity to grow in an important part of their lives.”

Additionally, as previously announced, PFRA scores will become part of an Airman’s annual evaluation to incorporate a full picture of an individual’s performance and contributions. Official guidance in AFI 36-2406 released this week for implementation.

This evolution of the fitness program represents a deliberate investment in the force, ensuring that Airmen are not only prepared for the challenges of today, but are also physically sustained for a long and healthy career.

Airmen and special warfare recruits participate in physical training during Exercise Bolt and Dagger at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Dec. 16, 2025. The three-day exercise incorporates physical fitness as one of several foundational components that prepare Airmen for the demands of the Tactical Air Control Party mission and overall readiness.

ABC IN KMC: Willkommen im Frühling!

Willkommen im Frühling!

Welcome to spring!

Meteorologists mark the start of spring on March 1, while traditional calendars place it on Friday, March 20, the year’s first equinox, when day and night are in perfect balance at twelve hours each.

March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. Originally known as Martius in the Roman calendar, this month marked the beginning of the military campaign season and agricultural activities, with March often considered the first month of the year.

In any case, it’s the season when the world stirs from winter’s sleep: daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths, along with early bloomers like crocus, snowdrops, and lily of the valley, splash the countryside with color and fresh green. Step outside to enjoy longer days, cheerful birdsong, and the sun’s warming, energizing light.

There’s plenty happening around the Kaiserslautern Military Community: Easter egg markets, spring and flower fairs, flea markets, and bright decorations popping up across the villages, panoramic hikes and more. This year Ramadan will conclude on March 19 or 20 depending on the location, Jewish Passah (Passover) begins April 1, while Good Friday falls on April 3 and Easter is on April 5.

Easter traditions in Germany

Many Easter traditions, such as the Easter bunny, egg hunts and chocolate or candy bunnies, are quite similar in the U.S. and in Germany, however, there may be a few customs you are not familiar with.

In Germany, Easter is historically a Christian holiday with church services on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Both Good Friday (April 3) and Easter Monday (April 6) are public holidays in Germany and all stores, banks and official offices are closed. Switzerland and the Netherlands are closed on Friday, while Luxembourg, France and Belgium treat Easter Monday as a public holiday.

Not only does Easter mark the end of Lent, it also sweeps you into the spring feeling with a number of German customs to go along with it. As elsewhere in the world, children enjoy blowing out eggs, colorfully dying them and are eager to hunt for the ones the Easter bunny has hidden for them.

Green dishes and false rabbits

Beginning the weekend of celebration on Thursday, referred to as “Gründonnerstag” (green Thursday) by Germans, may not be so familiar. Tradition has it that some families only eat pure vegetarian meals, preferably in green. Popular dishes include spinach with potatoes and fried eggs, potatoes with green herb sauce, a specialty from Frankfurt, or egg salad with mustard and herb dressing.

In honor of St. Peter, who was a fisherman, fish is typically served, fried or steamed, on Friday. Salmon with potatoes and green asparagus is popular, while kids may prefer simple fish sticks. An Easter Sunday dish could be “falscher Hase” (false rabbit), a type of meatloaf, or the traditional Easter lamb, served with rosemary potatoes and fresh spring vegetables. Typical desserts include carrot cake, a braid shaped cake called “Osterzopf” or cakes and cupcakes with fresh fruits and cream. Chocolate Easter bunnies, eggs, chicks and

other sweets remain the all-time favorites for younger (and older) children.

Bonfires, egg shooting, Easter trees

Easter bonfires are lit in some villages, which traditionally served to drive winter spirits away. In some parts of Germany, it is common to burn rotten wood and old furniture, no longer needed clothes and shoes, and even rags in the “Lumpenfeuer” (rag bonfire), so as to clear the house of unnecessary items, an early form of spring cleaning.

A popular sport during the season is “Ostereierschiessen” (Easter egg shooting). Contestants shoot at paper goals marked with Easter figures or eggs with the aim of hitting as many “eggs” as possible. Each successful shot brings about a real egg and the winner of a whole tournament is crowned as the “Schützenkönig” (champion marksman).

You may find colorfully decorated flower bouquets or even wreaths with bright spring flowers such as crocus, primroses, tulips, daffodils and Easter ornaments in households and stores. Others decorate pussy willow or forsythia branches with small wooden eggs, bunnies or lambs or tidy up their front yards by hanging ornaments on bushes. Some communities even offer colorful and elaborate Easter trees in traffic circles or on market squares.

A somewhat older tradition is to pull moss from below trees and shrubs and bind it into natural Easter baskets for the bunny to fill with eggs and small gifts.

Along the coastal regions of the North and Baltic Seas, the Easter bunny likes to hop around the beach, lay eggs in the sand and children can dig for the precious “seafood” with buckets and shovels.

Rabbits have historically been seen as a symbol of fertility (offspring can be up to 20 bunnies). In addition, in Byzantium a rabbit was an early symbol for Christ. Both in Greek and Germanic mythology, rabbits were considered to be holy animals for Greek Goddess Aphrodite and for Germanic Spring and Fertility Goddess Ostera. According to legend, children were sent to meadows to search for eggs in Zürich, Switzerland, and since they more often saw rabbits than hens, they believed that the long-eared animals had left the eggs. In Germany, the rabbit first became popular in 1678 (Reformation time) by Protestant families and the bunny finally became a “star” thanks to the chocolate industry!

And not to forget, St. Patrick is celebrating his special day on March 17. He was a fifth century Romano-British bishop who is widely known for converting many Irish to Christianity. St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland with large public events, civic ceremonies, and a major parade and festival in Dublin that runs across several days and includes street performances, concerts, family events, and cultural programming. Pubs around Kaiserslautern will also have special events on or shortly after March 17.

Spring forward

Remember to set your clocks forward one hour on March 29 for Central European Summer Time (CEST) to enjoy an extra hour of daylight. The Gartenschau in Kaiserslautern opens on April 1 with plenty of fun and activities. Whatever you do, welcome March and early April, savor nature’s revival, and celebrate the season.

Delivered through a partnership between DoWEA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District and German host nation partners, the $57 million project incorporates flexible classroom layouts, collaborative commons areas, dedicated art and music spaces, enhanced security systems and energy-efficient design.

Col. Daniel R. Kent, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District, said the project represents a shared investment in families serving overseas.

During the ceremony, representatives formally presented a ceremonial key to school leadership, symbolizing the transition from construction to a fully operational learning environment for students and staff.

US Army Soldiers take part in German American Friendship Day, compete for German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge

As part of the German American Friendship Day festivities held Feb. 27, more than 300 U.S. servicemembers came together to test their military skills and physical prowess during the 2026 German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition held here Feb. 23 -27.

The five-day event, co-hosted by Army Public Health Command Europe and the USAF 86th Airlift Wing, saw U.S. Army Soldiers from various Army units across the Rheinland-Pfalz region compete alongside Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing and German Bundeswehr soldiers. The competition aimed to enhance military proficiency, foster friendship, and improve interoperability between the allied forces.

The GAFB is a prestigious decoration of the German Bundeswehr which can be

awarded to Allied Soldiers who demonstrate exceptional physical fitness, military skills, and marksmanship.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command Europe, was among the guest speakers at the event and praised the participants’ commitment.

“Today, we honor the dedication and hard work of our servicemembers who have taken on the challenge of earning the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge,” said Giraud.

Established by the German Bundeswehr in 1971, the badge is available in gold, silver, and bronze levels. Earning the award is a rigorous endeavor, requiring participants to excel in a variety of disciplines. The tests include a basic fitness test, swimming, marksmanship with German weapons, and a timed ruck march. Servicemembers from all military branches are eligible to compete

for the decoration.

According to event planners, the challenging competition highlighted the readiness and excellence of both U.S. and German troops. By training and competing side-by-side, participants build not only individual resilience but also strengthen the collective readiness of the Allied Nations.

“The highly coveted German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge strengthens the bonds between American and German military units, builds partner-nation military relations, and promotes espritde-corps while showcasing military and physical preparedness,” Giraud added.

The annual competition serves as a testament to the enduring partnership between the United States and Germany, reinforcing the shared values and commitment to security that have defined the transatlantic alliance for decades. The demanding standards of the GAFB ensure

that those who earn it represent the peak of military and physical preparedness.

The German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition was part of the German American Friendship Day hosted at Ramstein Air Base Feb. 27. According to those involved in planning the event, it was a celebration of a deep and enduring alliance forged over decades, built on a foundation of shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for a prosperous future.

“As we all know, the world is a complex and ever-changing place, but one thing that has remained constant has been the strength of the German American relationship,” added Giraud. “The challenges we face in the future may be different from those of the past, but they are no less significant. It is our duty to face these challenges together, with the same spirit of cooperation and determination that has defined our friendship for generations.”

paradise. If you’ve never visited, you should. If you’ve already been, here are seven reasons to entice you to go again. Heidelberg Castle may be one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations, but it still contains plenty of mystery!

1. There are two ways up, and at least one is fun(icular)

If you’re into medieval exercise, then the walk from the city center to the castle can be fun. Visitors work their way up a concrete path that goes straight up the hill — none of this newfangled constant switchback stuff. Which means that, by the time you finish covering the 260-foot vertical distance, you’ll be breathing like a knight dressed in chain mail.

A less sweaty option involves taking the funicular railway from the Kornmarkt to the Castle. It’s fun, easy, and riders can also buy a ticket that includes castle admission. As a bonus, you can shake your head at the struggling walkers below.

2. There is an enormous wine vat

You may have heard of the Heidelberg Tun, which was built in 1751 and which looks like something called a Tun would look. It is a massive, 58,000-gallon, wooden wine vat that hasn’t held as much wine as one might think (because, honestly, lugging that much wine up an 18th century hill would have been very difficult).

Yet, the Tun is a must-see. In its way, it is a marvel of human ingenuity. And it makes the mind wander to all sorts of unexpected places. As in, how was this Tun the third one that the medieval royals built, and why did they think the first two (both of which were also massive) were too small?

3. A cup of water allegedly killed a court jester

It is true that, prior to the 20th century, water was more dangerous than wine or beer (think cholera and a lack of motorized vehicles). Still, one has to feel sorry for poor Perkeo, an 18th-century court jester for Prince-Elector Carl Philipp von der Pfalz. According to legend, Perkeo was an expert wine drinker who could, ahem, polish off thousands of liters of wine without problem.

And so it was, then, that drinking a cup of water supposedly did him in. No one is quite sure what exactly happened, but it is certain that the prankster was missed by the Prince-Elector and his hangers-on. No one is sure, either, whether the ghost of Perkeo is still haunting the Tun…

4. The castle is kind of a naturalist’s paradise

There are protected animals that make their homes in the Castle. Bats love it, including the tiny pipistrelle bat, as well as the large mouse-eared bat. If you’re lucky, you can also spot European toads, Alpine newts, and fire salamanders.

Heidelberg Castle also contains a Paleozoic-era rock outcropping, known as a geotope, that geology buffs rave about. Toss in beautiful trees, manicured gardens and other greenery, and the castle starts to feel even more magical.

5. It has an awesome festival every summer

We’re talking plays, musicals, concerts, illuminations, artisans, food, and drinks! And, of course, all of it is set in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. As a bonus, the fun lasts for most of June and July.

So if you’re thinking about a summer visit, do a little research in advance. Being festive at the Heidelberg Castle Festival is an unforgettable experience.

6. The castle guides wear costumes

Living history may seem a little cringeworthy sometimes. After all, we live in the age of jeans and t-shirts. Who needs ruffled collars, bonnets, knee-high leather boots or 17th century dresses, anyway?

Oho! The guides at Heidelberg Castle, that’s who! And if you opt for a guided tour, you won’t regret it for an instant. The costumed guides are knowledgeable, funny, and will let you see the castle in a completely different light. When you’re done with a guided tour, you’ll walk away with a whole new appreciation for the complexity and majesty of the place.

Guided tours in English are offered hourly every day from April to early November, and daily between November and March. Cost is €6 for adults.

7. You probably won’t get hit by lightning

Okay, the logic here is admittedly shaky, but it’s based on the fact that lightning has

already struck the castle… twice. The two most famous lightning strikes — in the 16th and 18th centuries, respectively — did a lot of damage: both of them led to fires and the subsequent destruction of many structures.

The castle was rebuilt both times, of course. And those efforts led, in part, to the
