On the flight line, it can look simple: a hose connected, a deadman handle squeezed, a gauge rising as aircrew hustles.
For the Airmen of the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron’s Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants shop, the scene on the flight line is just the final step in a much bigger system. Much of their work happens behind the scenes, keeping aircraft and vehicles moving across Europe and beyond.
“We provide all the fuel for three wings and five combat commands, ground products and jet fuels,” said Master Sgt. Matthew Bennett, 86th LRS Fuels Management Flight superintendent. “We have about 9 million gallons of fuel storage that we ‘QC,’ constantly testing the fuel, checking out the trucks.”’

Gateway.”
Behind the scenes, that mission includes maintaining the base’s hydrant system, an underground network of tanks, piping and pumps that moves fuel from storage to ramps without relying solely on trucks.
“Along with the refueling trucks and the aircraft, we also maintain all the fuel stored on base here,” McEwen said. “We’re responsible for maintaining the tanks and the piping system and all the pumps that can actually get fuel to the aircraft.”
POL also includes cryogenics, which involves providing, sampling and testing liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and fuel stored on base in a controlled laboratory setting.
Daily operations center on coordinating, tracking requirements, monitoring inventory and supporting takeoff times at any hour of the day.
“Without fuel, these planes aren’t going anywhere,” said Staff Sgt. Nicholas McEwen, 86th LRS hydrants noncommissioned officer in charge. “Our impact is, anything you see flying was touched by POL.”
“Things definitely change on the fly for us,” he said. “We get a lot of quick turns here at Ramstein. Planes only have maybe an hour or two of ground time, and they need fuel to go.”
Airman 1st Class Dalayna Barrera, an 86th LRS fuel service center controller, said her job is to keep those moving parts aligned, whether she’s running day shift or night shift.
“It’s mostly just controlling, making sure everything on the flight line is getting the fuel it needs for the aircraft, whatever they’re requesting, making sure that they’re meeting their takeoff times,” Barrera said.
On nights, the focus can shift to an equally important mission, accountability.
“During closeout, we’re mak-
That accountability is crucial because the fuel volumes are large and must be tracked to the gallon. Ramstein’s scale and mission diversity makes its fuel operations distinct from those of many other bases.
“With fuel requirements, we’re supposed to be maintaining a certain level of fuel at all times,”
McEwen said. “Right now, we’re running through 500,000-600,000 gallons of fuel a day. So just as fast as fuel is going out, it’s coming in.”
For many POL Airmen, that flexibility becomes personal growth, as they learn to adapt in a career field where schedules, requirements and priorities can shift in an instant.
“POL has brought me more discipline when it comes to being ready, being prepared for things that I don’t necessarily want to happen all the time,” Barrera said. “You take it as it comes.”
The team reiterated that they are close-knit, partly because the mission demands it. Long hours, constant coordination and the shared understanding that if any link in the chain breaks, everything slows.
“That team mindset becomes most visible during surges,” Bennett said. “When workloads can multiply, Airmen step outside their typical roles and no one’s complaining. Everyone’s just really willing to help each other out, we’re all doing it and it’s awesome.”
For 86th LRS fuels professionals, the Airmen who make it happen, it’s a point of pride shared across the flight line and the shops behind it. The mission isn’t just pumping fuel, it’s enabling every mission, sortie and operation at Ramstein.
“Everything that comes through this area comes through here,” Bennett said. “And we’re the ones that are putting gas on the planes to get it out of here.”

U.S. Air Force Maj. Michael “Danger” A. Blea, 480th Fighter Squadron assistant director of operations, assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, was awarded the Silver Star during a ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, March 3.
The presentation of the award recognized Blea’s extraordinary heroism in combat during his deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in 2025. He now is one of fewer than 100 military personnel to earn the Silver Star since the U.S. Air Force was established as an independent military service in 1947.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jason T. Hinds, U.S. Air Force in Europe – Air Forces Africa commander, presented the nation’s third highest military decoration for valor in combat to Blea before both an in-person and virtual audience of Airmen, family members and distinguished guests.
According to the official citation, Blea distinguished himself through conspicuous gallantry while engaged in combat operations against enemy forces. Despite intense enemy fire and significant personal risk suppressing enemy air defenses, Blea, piloting his F-16 Fighting Falcon deliberately placed himself in harm’s way to lead and protect his team.
During the engagement, Blea maintained situational awareness in a rapidly evolving and hostile environment, coordinated critical actions under fire, and ensured the safe movement and accountability of personnel. His decisive leadership and calm under pressure directly enabled mission accomplishment while preventing loss of life.
The citation credits his actions preserving combat effectiveness and safeguarding fellow service members during a moment of extreme danger.
“I am truly honored to be presented with a Silver Star,” Blea said. “While we never wish

to be in these circumstances that put us in this position, it is always a possibility that we understand and that we are prepared to handle through the dedication and perfection that we strive to attain every day in training. The hard work and commitment allow the unpredictable situations to be manageable ones that we can and will overcome.”
Hinds emphasized both the magnitude of the actions described in the citation and the character behind them.
“We are here to award Maj. Michael Blea the Silver Star Medal for gallantry and action against an enemy of the United States, an honor that’s reserved for those whose courage under fire rises far above the call of duty,” Hinds said. “Danger’s skill, his composure under pressure, allowed him to outmaneuver the threats, support his wingman and enable mission success.”

Among those in attendance was retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian, former commander of USAFE-AFAFRICA. Harrigian reflected on both Blea’s valor and the example he sets for future generations of Airmen.
“This doesn’t happen without the team,” Harrigian said. “We have an incredible team. What you [Blea] all continue to deliver each and every day is demonstrated not only in this mission, but what the troops, the maintainers and everybody that it takes to generate a sortie, that was part of what you did.”
As the medal was pinned to his uniform, the audience responded with a standing ovation – a tribute to Blea’s courage, leadership and selfless service.
The Silver Star citation formally recognizes Blea’s actions exemplifying the highest traditions of military service and

air advisors complete more than half of their career field education

The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron and 1st Combat Communication Squadron partnered to create the Advanced Air Advisor Field Craft Academy to rapidly equip Airmen with advanced skills and reduce a yearlong training to under six months.
The Air Advisor Career Field Education and Training Plan upgrade training consists of 530 tasks. After this training, the students can mark 281 tasks complete.
“We created a field training exercise to train Airmen to complete the CFETP and further basic skills learned in the initial course to acquire advanced air advisor training to go on more missions,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Romain Gaskin II, 1 CBCS expeditionary training supervisor.
Air advisors represent the U.S. Air Force with partner nations to assess, train, advise, assist, and equip.
“This training prepared me for worst case scenarios,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Hector Montoya, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air advisor. “When we’re out the door, hopefully it is low threat, but we trained at a high level for worst-case scenarios.”
Montoya referenced the tragic day nine air advisors lost their lives April 27, 2011, when an Afghan air force officer opened fire in Kabul, Afghanistan, an event that remains the deadliest insider attack in the history of the war in Afghanistan.
As part of the training, 17 students honed vital skills including small unit tactics, urban warfare, land navigation, tactical casualty combat care, night vision goggle operations, active shooter scenarios, and live firing. To further facilitate team building, the training was conducted more than an hour away from Ramstein Air Base, where instructors and students lived in field-like conditions. They also held several team dinners to build stronger relationships.
“We learned we all have different strengths that we can use as force multipliers as we operate across Europe and Africa,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tajae Gambrell, 435 CRSS advance air advisor.
One example is U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Juttland Laroza, 86th Security Forces Squadron flight sergeant, who previously spent 12.5 years in the U.S. Army.
“The tactics, techniques, and procedures I learned as an air advisor are very similar to what I learned in the Army,” said Laroza, who during his time in the Nevada National Guard built relationships with Tonga and Fiji through the State Partnership Program. “Building relationships is very important in our current operational environment.”
With just nine months time-in-service in the Air Force, Laroza benefited from the opportunity to learn from members in other career fields and air advisors.
In the future, instructors from the 435 CRSS and 1 CBCS hope to get this training accredited and available to air advisors across the globe.

Airmen assigned to the 786th Force Support Squadron support aircrews and passengers on Ramstein Air Base by preparing in-flight meals. Located near the flightline, the Jawbone Flight Kitchen operates around the clock to provide boxed meals for a range of operations, including aeromedical evacuation missions, passenger transport and aircrew travelling through the installation.
“I love being able to feed people,” said Tech. Sgt. Cory Howard, 786th FSS food service production manager. “To produce a good product for people to eat to keep them moving throughout the day.”
Units ordering food will choose from four different supplement options and 11 different entree items. They can mix and match whichever supplement they want with whichever entree that they crave. Then the staff in the kitchen will take that, prepare it and place it into a flight box which will then be picked up by fleet services who deliver it.
The Jawbone Flight Kitchen prepares a range of meals designed to travel on aircraft and accommodate dietary needs. They offer grilled chicken, chicken wraps, turkey ham club sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, ham sandwiches and a couple of vegetar-

ian options. “There is no mission without nutrition,” Howard said.
“If you have no food in the tank, you have no gas to go anywhere.”
A small team of Airmen maintain 24/7 coverage of the kitchen to ensure meals are prepared and delivered whenever missions require support.
The importance of the kitchen becomes especially clear dur-
ing time-sensitive missions, where Airmen working at the kitchen must rapidly respond to urgent needs.
“Just recently, we pushed out 180 meals for a medical evacuation mission,” Howard said. “We had less than a six-hour notice to get that together.”
Howard said the team was able to complete the order in under two hours.
For one of the four Airmen who work the kitchen, this experience changed their perspective on the importance of their work.
“They hadn’t eaten anything,” said Senior Airman Kamiah Johnston, 786th FSS food service journeyman. “They needed something to eat. I could tell from the phone call that they were desperate and in need.”
Johnston said moments like these reinforced how even small tasks contribute to a larger mission.
“It’s nice to do something that helps other people in a different aspect,” she said. “Of course, people go to the dining facility and we serve people there but it’s different when you’re helping somebody that’s on a mission or that’s flying from somewhere.”
She emphasized that providing meals goes beyond routine food service, it directly supports recovery and mission readiness.
“It’s not just giving sandwiches or just giving these itsy-bitsy items of food,” she said. “It’s actually giving someone nourishment. It’s helping someone get better than they are in whatever situation they are handling at the moment.”
Howard believes that the impact is felt across every mission supported at Ramstein.
“Every day we have a direct effect on flight line missions,” Howard said. “We make sure that meals get out there on time with coordination through fleet services, and that enables the mission to go to sustain every aircraft that comes through this flight line.”
From preparing a handful of meals to supporting large-scale flight operations, the Ramstein Jawbone Flight Kitchen remains ready to respond whenever aircraft and crews require support.

prove ‘Together is Better’ to fortify Ramstein

by Capt. Amber R. Kelly-Herard 435th Air Ground Operations Wing
To counter emerging aerial threats, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Logistics, Engineering, and Force Protection Directorate identified a critical need for a Fixed-Site Small Unmanned Aerial Detection System at Ramstein Air Base to protect its personnel, infrastructure, and mission-critical assets.
The 435th Air Ground Operations Wing was uniquely suited to deliver the solution.
“Partnering with the AGOW provided several significant benefits, such as reducing costs by leveraging existing AGOW capabilities rather than contracting outside support,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Carlos Buitrago, USAFE-
AFAFRICA/A4 Directorate FS-SUADS program manager. “The collaboration also gave the AGOW valuable opportunities to train and further develop their expeditionary skill sets in a real-world environment, strengthening their readiness for future operations.”
“In addition, the partnership helped build new relationships and reinforce existing ones, creating a stronger foundation for future joint projects and enhancing interoperability across units,” Buitrago continued.
As the main logistical gateway for multiple areas of responsibility, it is imperative that proper protective infrastructure is in place to defend the base against unmanned aerial threats. These FS-SUADS provide integral architecture to support point defense kits and do just that.
The project required multiple elevated platforms for FS-sUADS sensors to detect, track, and enable responses to small unmanned aerial system threats. While the 1st Engineering Installation Squadron had the expertise to install the towers, they first needed solid ground to build on.
Luckily, their sister squadron, the 435th Construction and Training Squadron, had the solution.
“By combining the engineering and installation expertise of the 1 EIS with the expeditionary construction and support capabilities of the 435 CTS, the AGOW provided USAFE-AFAFRICA with a scalable, repeatable model for rapidly fielding air base defense infrastructure across Europe and Africa,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sean Hicks, 1 EIS Team Chief.
The 435 CTS contributed critical
expeditionary and civil engineering capabilities, including foundation preparation, conduit installation, and heavy equipment coordination.
“That’s what we’re here for,” said Dieter Flachsland, 435 CTS operations director. “We are busy throughout the year, executing our regular troop training program, but projects like this are exactly what we train for. Our skilled workforce of military and civilians are the perfect people to get these jobs done.”
With the foundations laid, it was time for the 1 EIS to begin its work.
The 1 EIS provided engineering design, installation planning, and technical execution required to construct permanent elevated platforms and integrate the associated cyberspace infrastructure.
“This collaboration highlights how the 435 AGOW’s diverse mission sets can be combined to accel-

erate capability delivery and meet emerging operational requirements across the theater,” said Hicks.
The final component of this project will be completed by a contractor and the A4 FS-SUADS program manager, but the 1 EIS and 435 CTS exemplify the flexibility and resourcefulness that are needed to decisively counter UAS threats across the theater.
This project aligns with the Air Force’s expanding counter-UAS architecture, which is designed to provide scalable detection and response capabilities across key locations.
By delivering permanent, engineered infrastructure in support of FS-sUADS, the 435 AGOW is helping lay the foundation for a resilient, theater-wide air base defense posture that can adapt as threats continue to evolve.

For some, leadership is a title. For a veterinary food inspector with Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz, it’s an action. It’s about leading from the front, pushing through adversity, and proving that with the right team, any obstacle can be overcome.
Currently serving as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for the Benelux Branch Sgt. First Class Marissa Henson’s eleven-year career is a testament to her philosophy of resilience, teamwork and stepping outside her comfort zone.
Most recently, Henson’s tenacity was on full display during the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition. This multinational event, hosted by the Bundeswehr, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Army in the Kaiserslautern area, is a grueling test of physical and mental endurance.
For Henson, the decision to participate was almost an afterthought. “I didn’t originally plan to compete but there was another spot available so I took it,” she recalled. “I saw it as my last hooah before I PCS in June.”

Currently serving as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for the Benelux Branch Sgt. First Class Marissa Henson’s eleven-year career is a testament to her philosophy of resilience, teamwork and stepping outside her comfort zone.
Despite her impromptu decision, she not only competed but excelled, earning the title of topperforming female. The achievement was a surprise, even to her.
“I felt fairly unprepared. I didn’t train up for it,” Henson admitted. The competition presented significant hurdles, most notably the ruck march. “The ruck march was the most challenging out of the event,” she said. “I’m short so I basically
had to do a light jog the entire time.”
Pushing through the pain and exhaustion, she didn’t just complete the event; she embraced the challenge and emerged victorious, embodying the very advice she offers to her Soldiers:
“Push yourself and you might surprise yourself with how much you’re capable of. Be scared but still do it. Just go for it.”
This spirit of perseverance was forged long before the GAFPB. Henson’s nine-month deployment to Afghanistan crystalized her understanding of teamwork and resilience. Facing the holidays far from home, she learned a lesson that has defined her career.
“I truly enjoy the cohesion of the team,” she reflected. “I deployed to Afghanistan and was gone for the holidays but I learned you can do anything with the right team.” This belief in the power of a cohesive unit is the bedrock of her leadership style.
As a leader, Henson doesn’t direct from the sidelines. She leads by doing.
“How do I teach my Soldiers about leadership? By doing it with
them. I don’t tell them what to do, I set the example by doing it alongside them.”
This approach fosters trust and confidence, creating an environment where Soldiers have each other’s backs because they know their leader has theirs.
Throughout her career, Henson has consistently sought out opportunities to grow and challenge herself. During a posting in Hawaii, she took on the demanding role of NCOIC for the Rim of the Pacific exercise, the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise.
The position offered a “great opportunity to work alongside our Navy and Air Force counterparts,” broadening her perspective and enhancing her ability to operate in a joint environment.
She has also competed in Best Warrior competitions and, in a shift from her usual role as a competitor, ran the water survival lane at the MEDCOM Best Medic Competition.
Her experiences, from deployment to multinational exercises, have given her a profound appreciation for the importance of readiness. Her time in Kaiserslautern
has offered a different pace, but her past has informed her present.
She understands “why readiness is so important, why we train and why we train the way we train.”
Henson’s impact on the Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland-Pfalz is significant.
She has been instrumental in assisting with the Best Warrior competition, ranges, and field training exercises. Looking to the future, she is planning an ATX and K9 TCCC for Soldiers from Wiesbaden, Belgium, Spangdahlem, Baumholder, and Kaiserslautern, continuing to build that critical team cohesion and readiness across the region.
What started as a plan to serve four years has evolved into a dedicated career. Now at eleven years of service and with a PCS to Virginia on the horizon, Sgt. 1st Class Henson has no plans of stopping, aiming for twenty years or more.
“I just really enjoy what I do.” Henson said.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that the greatest growth happens just outside our comfort zone and that with trust and teamwork, there is no limit to what can be achieved.

Kaiserslautern celebrates 750 Years city rights
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary with a full calendar of events, Kaiserslautern also has every reason to join the festivities and make this year unforgettable. Come with us on an exciting journey through time to the moment when history began to take shape.
Villa Luthra
In 1276, King Rudolf von Habsburg granted the small settlement “Villa Luthra,” home to merely a few thousand inhabitants, the status of an imperial city. This milestone underscored its growing economic and administrative significance. And, is reason enough for Kaiserslautern to celebrate its 750th anniversary of city rights this year!
Kaiserslautern’s story is a sweeping journey through time, from prehistoric settlements to its role as a modern industrial and strategic hub. The journey didn’t just begin in 1276, but rather many millennia earlier. Let’s take a journey through time and learn more about the development of the city.
Prehistoric Beginnings and Early Settlements
Archaeological evidence suggests that the area around today’s Kaiserslautern has been attractive to settlers for thousands of years. Early traces of human activity date back to the Neolithic era, with remnants of the Bandkeramic culture (circa 5500–5000 BC) discovered in excavations around the area. Over the centuries, various cultures left their mark, including the Celtic peoples, whose burial mounds and tombs—such as those uncovered at nearby Weilerbach—demonstrate that the land was part of an active cultural and economic network even in ancient times.
Empire, the area became integrated into a vast network of trade routes and agricultural estates. The Romans exploited the fertile lands and the strategic position near the Palatinate Forest to establish villas and an intriguing infrastructure. Remnants of Roman constructions can be found around Kaiserslautern, including road fragments and building foundations. This period laid the groundwork for the later development of the town by highlighting its location in a culturally diverse region and an abundance of natural pools and smaller streams.
The medieval era transformed Kaiserslautern into a mixture of royal influence and military strategy. By the 9th century, a settlement known as “Villa Luthra” had emerged near the banks of the Lauter stream. Later, it was referred to as Curtis Luthara in 985 AD, when Emperor Otto III granted the area to his cousin Otto of Carinthia. In the same year the town was granted market, customs and income rights, and earned the settlement of about 800 inhabitants great prestige. An official market was opened behind where Stiftskirche is located and eventually moved to Stiftsplatz, where it is still held every Saturday. Throughout the course of time, the settlement also became closely associated with Emperor Friedrich I, known as Barbarossa, who gave the city its name: Kaiserslautern means “emperor’s Lauter,” derived from Luthra (clear water).
Barbarossa – A legend lives on Visitors in Kaiserslautern most certainly stumble across the term “Barbarossa” everywhere. Whether it’s a street name, a bakery chain, Barbarossaburg, Barbarossastadt on a road sign, or the annual Barbarossa music fest in September. This can easily lead to the impression that folks are obsessed with this Barbarossa. Let’s find out what is behind this iconic character!
Emperor Friederich I, nicknamed Barbarossa because of his red beard,
became closely connected to the town when he commissioned an imperial palace, known as a Kaiserpfalz between 1152 and 1160. He was born in Hagenau, now in north-east France, in mid-December 1122. Hunting and fishing were his favorite pastimes, and he was especially fond of the area with its abundance of water and wildlife in the Palatinate Forest. Although only ruins remain in front of the city hall today, the castle symbolizes the city’s imperial past and continues to inspire local legends.
Friedrich I Barbarossa was from the lineage of the Staufer nobility and was crowned King in 1152. During his Italian crusade in 1155, Pope Hadrian IV appointed him Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nations, until that time a conglomerate of loose constantly rivaling kingdoms. His remarkable empire stretched from most of today’s Benelux (excluding Flanders), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, northern parts of Italy and the northeastern part of France.
One fact – which may even be new to residents of Kaiserslautern – is that Barbarossa founded a hospital “Hospital zur Heiligen Maria” (Hospital of Holy Mary). Monks of the Premonstratensian Order were responsible for care of the patients, mainly intended for poor, elderly and children. It also came to good use during the plagues in the 12th and 13th centuries. Commonly referred to as the “spital,” over time it eventually evolved into the modern-day Westpfalz-Klinikum.
Barbarossa was a very adventurous and restless person and established a network of imperial residences, it is noted to up to 70, around the empire so that he could govern from anywhere he wanted. He possibly even developed the concept of “teleworking.” Although he could not read or write, he was a clever businessman and notable diplomat. He came to be known as a strict, innovative but just emperor. He also loved to travel, was more often seen on horseback than in one of his castles but had eleven
children with his second wife.
The circumstances of his sudden death in June 1190 are rather mysterious, some say he drifted off in a current when trying to cross the river on his horse. On the other hand, he was a good swimmer but is said to have drowned in River Saleph (Türkiye) on his way to his third crusade to Jerusalem at nearly 70 years of age. It is undetermined where his remains are buried, though possibly in Jerusalem. In any case, he has gone down in history as one of Medieval Europe’s most fascinating rulers.
If you would like to have a chat with him, visit the Stadtmuseum (TheodorZink-Museum), his Avatar will be happy to answer any questions you have!
Almost ninety years after Barbarossa’s 38-year reign, Kaiserslautern received its city rights in 1276. This important milestone occurred when King Rudolf von Habsburg granted the settlement the privileges of an imperial city, which led to exciting developments in the following centuries.
Visitors may see large fish around town or even on the city flag and coat of arms. The story behind it: During the Middle Ages Kaiserslautern was surrounded by numerous ponds with an abundance of fish. Legend has it that in 1497 a giant pike that had a ring with Greek insignia was caught in the “Kaiserwoog.” It is said that Emperor Friedrich II (grandson of Barbarossa) personally put this fish in the pond 267 years earlier. Thus, the fish was integrated into the red and white city flag and coat of arms.
In 2001, the city celebrated its 725th anniversary and fish sculptures were set up around town, including the KMC fish with propellers and German and U.S. flags, symbolizing German-American friendship, located at the German-American Community Office.
Closing the first chapter of Kaiserslautern’s history, stay with us for the next episodes and thrilling updates in next week’s edition!

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN—
Communication on the battlefield has throughout history been a key to success or failure in conflict.
The side who could exercise better command and control could win the day. Knowing communication’s importance, cyber Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command brought signal branch personnel and industry partners from across the European theater to the 21st TSC 2026 Tech Symposium in GarmischPartenkirchen, March 9-10.
The purpose of the symposium is to work through the challenges of how does the U.S. Army adapt the latest advantages in communication technology while deterring the threats adversaries place on our military networks.
“The focus I think is always interoperability. That’s the word we try to use and the most important thing to us,” said CW2 Antonio King, a Data Operations Warrant Officer with the 21st TSC NETOPS.
“It’s great if you can get things sent up for you, but how do you include everyone else.”
To make sure that the Army can meet the goal of communicating across the battlespace and theater
it has built networks over many years to exert command and control in coordination with our allied and partner nations. The constant problem facing the Army is how does it keep pace with advances in technologies while maintaining network security.
That is why the 21st TSC’s Tech Symposium is so important. It provides a forum for signal Soldiers and industry partners to collaborate on solutions to current challenges and educating on the latest advances.
AI based systems in particular present perhaps the greatest area of growth in network advancement.
To stay ahead of the advances, the Soldiers in attendance benefitted from the presence of industry partners at the symposium.
The industry representatives provided insight into their latest developments and how they can help the Army.
The adage goes that the first step to solving a problem is to first identify the problem. As the challenges of staying at the cutting edge of technology require constant vigilance, the 21st TSC’s Tech Symposium helps provide the means to identify the problems. This puts the Army one step closer to solving the problem of how to have a secure and unmatched network.

BERLIN — U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, was among a group of U.S. Army medical leaders who travelled to Berlin recently to observe the German Bundeswehr led Medic Quadriga 2026 exercise and to also take part in a subsequent meeting of NATO Surgeons General.
According to German military medical officials, Medic Quadriga 2026 is the largest and most complex medical service exercise conducted by the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) in decades.
The purpose of the Medic Quadriga exercise was to test the seamless handover of casualties from military medical units to civilian healthcare providers in the event of a large-scale NATO

defense scenario. The exercise involved approximately 1,250 participants, including 1,000
military personnel and 250 civilian representatives.
Exercise participants included the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), the German Red Cross, Johanniter, the
German Life Saving Association (DLRG), ADAC Air Rescue and the Berlin Senate.
“It is important that the chain of rescue, with all its components, functions in an interlinked and resilient manner,” General Staff (Dr.) Ralf Hoffmann, senior medical officer of the Bundeswehr Central Medical Service. “This means that the soldiers who are being treated at the front are brought back, admitted here, and then distributed to the appropriate treatment facilities in the country. This is the only way we can contribute to the resilience and endurance of the armed forces.”
Medic Quadriga 2026 was part of the overall Bundeswehr led Quadriga exercise series that has taken place since 2023. The exercise series combines existing and new national exercises across the Bundeswehr and embeds them into large-scale multinational exercises to defend North Atlantic Treaty Organization territory.

March is National Nutrition Month. As a military community, taking simple, sustainable steps toward better health through improved nutrition directly impacts medical readiness, resilience and long-term wellness.
National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign led by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, highlights the critical importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.
Supporting readiness through nutrition
Balanced nutrition supports:
• Increased energy and physical performance
• Stronger immune function
• Improved focus and mental clarity
• Healthy weight management
• Reduced risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and hypertension
“For Soldiers, proper fueling enhances endurance, recovery and mission performance,” said 1st Lt. Stephanie Gay, registered dietitian nutritionist, officer-incharge nutrition care division.
“For families and retirees, healthy dietary patterns help prevent chronic disease and promote lifelong wellness.”
Small changes, big impact Gay recommends starting with manageable steps:
• Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
• Choose a variety of colors to ensure you’re getting essential vitamins, minerals and fiber.
• Switch to whole grains.
• Whole wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal provide sustained energy and improved digestion.
• Choose lean proteins.
• Poultry, fish, beans, lentils and nuts support muscle repair while limiting saturated fat intake.
• Stay hydrated.
• Replace sugary beverages with water to improve physical and cognitive performance.
• Limit sodium and added sugars.
Reducing processed foods and cooking at home more often helps control ingredients and portion sizes.

Turning at traffic lights in Germany is a little bit different than in the US. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back!
There are two different green arrows that indicate how and when you can make a turn at a red light.
Scenario 1: Red traffic light and green metal arrow.
In this scenario, you are allowed to make a right turn on the right lane even though the traffic light is red. You do not have to, though! When you do, your car must come to a standstill at the line for 3 seconds and you need to yield to other participants in traffic. Pay special attention to other cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. If there is no danger to other members of traffic, you can make the turn.

Scenario 2: Red traffic light and green arrow within the traffic light.
In this scenario, you can make a right turn without stopping at the line. This green light arrow also gives you the right of way and you do not have to yield to other members of traffic.

Scenario 3: Red traffic light and no arrow.
Whenever there is a red traffic light that does not have a green arrow attached, you cannot make a right turn. You must stop at the traffic light until it turns green. Once the light turns green, you can make a turn but must yield to oncoming straight traffic.

As always, not adhering to German traffic regulations is fined.
Up to € 70 and one point against your license if you don’t stop at the line in the metal arrow scenario 1. If you endanger someone, the fine goes up. At least € 118.50 and one point against your license if you run a red light. If you endanger other traffic, fines go up and your license will be suspended.

whelming. There is an excellent blend of culture, commerce and nature. And, crucially, Pforzheim offers wonderful access to one of Germany’s most famous areas: the Black Forest.
A Day in Pforzheim: Four Ideas
1. Get up and get downtown. “City center” doesn’t have to equal crowds in Pforzheim. The gorgeous (and sprawling) Stadtgarten, or city park, is only a fiveminute walk from the pedestrian zone. This means that if you reach your shopping limit, or need to burn off caffeine, or need to run your children/dogs, then it’s totally possible to do so.
2. Let rivers guide you. There are three rivers that flow through Pforzheim – the Nagold, the Enz and the Würm. Depending on how you’re feeling, you can pick a different river along which to stroll. The Enz will take you right through the commercial area. The Nagold is flanked by the beautiful Stadtgarten. And green space abounds next to the Würm, which worms its way south toward what seems like neverending forest.
3. Take a culture trip. The city is loaded with history and culture. First, there’s the incredible Gasometer, which provides a rotating set of 360-degree art exhibits.

You can find watchmaking and jewelry museums that nod to the city’s craftsman past. An excellent archaeology museum connects its Roman roots to the present. The city also has an art museum. When the doors are open, Pforzheim has much to offer.
4. Go wild. Pforzheim has an excellent animal park that is home to hundreds of rare species from all over the world. With an emphasis on education, the Pforzheim
Wildpark is especially engaging for children. Online tickets are available.
The One Thing You Have to See: the Black Forest Pforzheim is located on the northern edge of Germany’s world-famous Black Forest. As such, it provides a wonderful jumping-off point for those who wish to dip their toes (or plunge) into the heart of the forest. Great hikes can be had just south of Pforzheim, and a thirty-minute
by
drive will put you smack dab in the middle of the Black Forest. The winding roads are brilliant (and occasionally thrill-inducing) every month of the year.
By car, Pforzheim is just over 90 minutes southeast of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 40 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 40 minutes northwest of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information.
