Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer’s day than a dip in cool, clear water. While the KMC is a bit landlocked, the surrounding areas offer a number of pools to help you beat the summer heat. It is important, however, to remain safe and courteous when visiting local swimming holes.
Pool safety is necessary to enjoy leisure-time swimming According to the Centers for Disease Control, Americans suffer from about ten deaths per day caused by accidental drowning Even more alarming, about one in five of those who die from drowning are children age 14 and younger Children benefit greatly from learning to swim at a young age The Ramstein Aquatic Center offers swimming lessons by instructors certified by The American Red Cross Learning proper swimming technique and safety is one of the most important steps in preparing for a day at the pool�
In addition to staying safe, visitors should aim to behave properly while at the pool and respect local customs There is a set of expectations for behavior for children and adults alike Here is an outline of pool rules and recom-
mendations to help make swim time more enjoyable Before diving in, take a look around at posted signs indicating what areas are intended for eating, swimming, smoking, etc� There are usually designated locations for each of these activities
Eating at the pool is encouraged Pack a picnic to share, but be sure not to eat or drink while in the pool� Find a spot in the grass or a picnic table before you chow down If you aren’t interested in bringing your own food, many local pools have snack shacks selling goodies Just be sure to bring euros to spend, as credit cards may not be accepted
When lounging at German pools, prepare to lay your towel in the grass There may be some areas to sit near the pool, but most people will be stretched out and sunning on the lawn Shady spots may be limited, so bringing an umbrella is never a bad idea
Limiting sun exposure is one way to reduce risk of skin damage caused by the summer’s strong UV rays
Because walking through the grass can lead to muddy toes, be sure to shower off before going for a swim Showers are usually located near the pool entrance for convenience Visitors are required to rinse off before entering the pool Adherence to this rule keeps the pool clean and clear for everyone
While lifeguards are on duty, it is the responsibility of parents to keep an eye on children playing in and around the pool Pool toys are allowed in German pools, but older children should be courteous of young ones playing in the water
Following safety and etiquette guidelines at the pool makes the experience better for everyone By properly preparing for time in the pool, parents and children can keep cool all summer long

GLAN RIVER CANOE ADVENTURE

Canoeing is one of those outdoor activities that compares to hiking when it comes to a relaxing day outdoors. A peaceful ride on the river with overhanging trees, no commercial boat traffic, and amazing scenery is something that you can find close to the KMC.
One of my favorite rivers in this region to spend time canoeing is the Glan River, which is ideal for beginners
The Glan River has a relaxing flow, is surrounded by trees, and boasts great views of the Northern Palatinate hills, valleys and countryside taking you away from the grind of everyday life There are many bends to navigate around and some small areas of rushing water that add to the overall experience However, they are no concern for beginners, groups or families with children
Along the way you will encounter countless species of river plants, water fowl, fish, butterfly swarms, flea crabs, and natural habitats that
will take you on an unforgettable journey through nature as you paddle along or take a break at one of the rest stops on the shore for a picnic or photo opportunities
Start your adventure in Meisenheim and paddle to Rehborn or Odernheim To add to your experience, you can hike along the Glanweg back to Meisenheim There, you can end your day by relaxing at the brewery, beer garden, ice cream parlors, restaurants, and bistros before exploring the historic Schlosskirche, castle church, and it’s gothic construction and art, the Herzog-Wolfgang-Haus, which belongs to the historic building of the caste, or chill out with the ducks and geese at the waterfall�

If you choose to go on your own and don’t wish to hike back to the starting point there are busses that run every hour along the entire route� Don’t forget, you will have to figure out the logistics of transporting your canoe back because the route on the river is one-way only� Some of my other great conoeing experiences have been on the Saar and Nahe rivers Both are similar to the Glan due to lack of commercial traffic, great scenery, peaceful day out and places to stop
For the more experienced canoers who want a larger body of water with a stronger and more challenging flow, the Mosel River can be a lot of fun and quite adventurous On the Mosel, you are dealing with a constant strong current, steering clear of speed boats, barges, tour ships and constantly turning the
bow of you canoe into their wake to avoid rolling over into the drink
At certain points along the route, you come upon dams with steep canoe/kayak slips that can send you towards the rocky shore A view of the vineyards and pit stops to sample great wine and food is definitely a plus� I do not suggest the Mosel for beginners, or families with children

• Research the routes and know your capabilities and those of your group
• Take lessons and learn about safety, equipment, techniques and proper clothing
• Rent before investing in equipment
• Check with your doctor if you have any medical or physical concerns
• Know emergency contacts and evacuation/rescue points
Don’t:
• Attempt to transport a canoe without proper racks and tie down accessories
• Go out alone or without checking weather conditions
• SUP in restricted areas such as shore fishing or fish and water fowl preserves
• Toss food scraps or any trash into the water or on shore

Kaiserslautern is a secret (and sometimes not-so-secret) biking mecca. Located on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the largest contiguous forest area in Germany, the surrounding area offers a varied landscape that is ideal for cyclists. Disappear into the forest, and you can find mountains in the south and hills, valleys and rivers like the Lauter or Nahe in the north. Or, follow the old imperial road along flat ground until you reach Saarbrücken or Saargemünd. Before you go, here are four tips to make sure your trip is as good as it can be.

1.Plan your route. A great way to plan and select bike tours is by using Komoot (available at www�komoot�com)� Komoot is available in many languages, including English, and has an app for smartphones Tours can be filtered by type (bike tour, MTB, road bike and E Bike), route length/time and difficulty(easy, medium, difficult) Even special “Gravel routes” like https:// www komoot com/collection/1158490/en are possible With a little search, something can be found for every requirement Please note: this service is commercial and not fully free�
Another option is completely free and can be found at https://www.tourenplanerrheinland-pfalz.de/. This site is also available in English.
2.Find a local gem. Two popular cycling destinations in the area are Humbergturm/Bremer Hof in Kaiserslautern and the Ludwigturm (4 km south of the Johanneskreuz)
The Mountainbikepark Pfälzer Wald is also a great choice� It consists of two bike parks: Trippstadt (https://www bikeparktrippstadt de/) and Dahn Unfortunately, both are closed at the moment due to COVID19, but keep on eye on them when things start to open again
There is also a single-trail Parcours in Hochspeyer with approximately 20 routes, at least 25% of which are single-trail� More about these tours can be found at https:// www mountainbikepark-pfaelzerwald de/touren�html� The single trail course in Hochspeyer is currently open

3.Check brakes and tires every time. Before each ride, check the brakes and the air pressure in the tires The correct air pressure can almost always be found in small print on the side of the tire If you are unsure, you can usually find a suitable bike store where you can have this briefly checked by a specialist Often this service is free for regular customers or done quickly for little money Due to COVID-19, however, you should call before a visit to a bike store and clarify when a visit is possible
4.Maintain your bike regularly. Make sure that, at least once a year, you ensure that everything on your bicycle is checked and adjusted� A regularly maintained bike with well adjusted gears, brakes and the correct air pressure increases the driving pleasure and reduces the risk of failure If the bike still needs an unplanned workshop visit, there are some smaller and larger bike stores in the Kaiserslautern area that are sure to help Expect longer waiting times during peak riding season between March and October Once you’ve covered these bases, head outside and have some fun� See you out there!

People often ask me if I get bored when I travel alone�
The answer is always no Sometimes it’s people-watching over expensive hot chocolate, sometimes it’s whiskey with strangers at hostel bars and other times it’s just an early night with
a good book I have met some pretty amazing humans on the road that I would have never encountered had I sat next to a friend
Now, don’t get me wrong, I have traveled extensively with friends and family and nothing compares to the sweet privilege of sharing travel memories with a loved one� But every once in a while, I pack a tiny pink suitcase and ask Ryanair or DB where to go next� There are so many benefits to it, especially after a period of time where your own company may have become more of
a nuisance to you
Now that you’re in Europe, the next metropolis is never more than a train or plane ride away If you look out for deals, this trip won’t blow a dent in your wallet either
First you should decide on a type of trip (city trip, spa, camping/ hiking), means of transportation (plane, bus, train, car), type of accommodation (camping, hostel, Airbnb, hotel) and off you go!
Here are some great perks to travelling away from your comfort zone, straight into an adventure:
• Become a problem solver You will inevitably be faced with unforeseeable situations and there will be no safety net to take care of it Thankfully, you’re smart and fearless and just needed a little nudge
• Go on a tech detox You may want to use social media as a crutch to feel less alone at first and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but once you get the hang of being by yourself, you might want to consider blocking electronic distractions and truly enjoying your time off� This will feel amazing after potentially having been glued to your screen day in and out
• Learn to love and appreciate yourself more as you become more self-aware
• Learn the language� You will hear a lot more of it once you’re not surrounded by fellow English speakers
• Meet new people This one sounds like a cliché but it’s true nonetheless and is a very enriching experience
• Go at your own pace� Breakfast at 2? Dinner at 5? It’s all up to you!
• Find out what you like doing� Whether it’s shopping, museum visits, sightseeing, picture taking or sitting in a park with
a magazine, nobody can reschedule your plans for you
• Become more decisive and boost your confidence as a result
As you can see, some of these are quite obvious and some are simply inevitable� You can’t go a whole weekend without eating by yourself at least once or trying to understand a foreigner at some point (unless you go to an English speaking country) Waiters will give you a certain look when you ask for a table for one but once you remind yourself that alone does not equal lonely, you will feel independent and liberated rather than lost and stood-up
Lastly, some tips to avoid feeling lonely:
• Plan your itinerary in advance A packed schedule will not leave room for self pity
• Set goals for your trip Do you want to learn how to take amazing photos? Read three books? Try as many pains au chocolat as possible? Follow your mission and keep your mind occupied
• Follow your gut If you feel unsafe, stick to more crowded areas
• Don’t feel bad if your screen time increases Our phones provide comfort in unfamiliar situations and that’s okay
There’s a chance you won’t like it There’s also a chance you’ll never want to travel with a friend ever again� The most likely outcome, however, is that you will have simply spent a nice weekend in a wonderful city

One of my favorite things about living in Germany is how dog-friendly everything is. I take my Italian Greyhound just about everywhere I go. And now that the weather’s warm, I’m planning even more outdoor adventures together. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your fourlegged friend during the warmer months.
Heat
Don’t let Fido dehydrate in the summer sun Most restaurants are more than willing to provide you with a bowl and tap water Simply ask, “Haben Sie Wasser für meinen Hund, bitte?”
Bees
As I write, my small dog is sitting on my lap with her mouth swollen like a chipmunk after eating a bee� I wish I could say she learned a lesson from all of this Seeing as this is the second time we’ve been through this, I doubt it
One sting is generally not dangerous But if you notice extreme swelling or trouble breathing, head to the vet as soon as possible If your dog has had multiple stings or had a bee in its mouth, call your vet� Bee stings in the mouth can be life-threatening It can cause swelling that can make it hard for the dog to breathe
Ticks
We love to take hikes in the many wooded trails in the area Ticks also love grassy trails, so it’s important to check your dog for them every day You can buy inexpensive tick removal tools at the vet or online�
Preparing for Holiday fireworks
Independence day celebrations are around the corner and while most of us look forward to the holiday, your four-legged family member may have a hard time coping with the fireworks you love so much Here are a few ideas to help relieve stress:
• Make your home escapeproof: Some dogs run when they get scared� Close all doors and windows, close all curtains or rolladens and turn on the lights� Turning on the TV for some background sounds may also help disguise the noise
• Go for a walk: Tire your
dog out before it gets dark Go for a long walk, or even a swim, if you have a lake nearby Make sure your dog is exhausted by the end of the evening to help settle them better
• Create a hiding space: If your dog likes to hide away, create a doggy den under a safe space with blankets, their bed and favorite cuddly toy
Once the fireworks start, be there for your dog to comfort them, don't leave them alone, if they are scared If they hide away, let them, your pooch will come out again, once it feels safe

HIDDEN OASIS –LUISENPARK MANNHEIM

Deep within the urban borders of the city of Mannheim, is the 100 acre public park known as Luisenpark. Named after the Grand Duchess Luise von Baden, daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm I, Luisenpark was built between 1892 and 1903. The park is located in the eastern part of the city of Mannheim and can be spotted from almost anywhere because of the large telecommunications tower located near the park’s main entrance.
Luisenpark is open all year around, from 9 a m to sunset It is often recognized as one of the most beautiful parks in all of Europe�
Ample activities created around both education and entertainment for children and adults can be had throughout the year� The park offers courses like gardening for adults and “The ABC’s of Ponies” for children
The vast expanse of land that creates Luisenpark allows for a diversity of landscapes and climates There is a farm where you can see animals up close and a botanical garden with a tropical butterfly house
On hot days, you can take your shoes off and walk through the 250m long mountain stream that cuts through the park You can also relax in the KlangOase, a garden below the telecommunications tower while you listen to music floating through the air from speakers hidden among the trees�
A large variety of animals wander through the park so that it feels partly like a zoo except that the animals aren’t confined African Flamingos wander freely and can be seen up close while you ride the Gondoletta down the lazy river Chinese gardens with water lilies of all colors, create a far-east backdrop for the Chinese Tea House, the largest of its kind in Europe The menu at the Chinese Tea House features a variety of 30 Chinese teas� If you’d like a more western environment for your afternoon tea, consider visiting the revolving restaurant atop the telecommunications tower for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire city below

During the summer, the park hosts a vast amount of festivals and other events In fact, you can host your own event, like a birthday party�
Luisenpark is truly an oasis in an urban setting There is a small fee to enter the park and some activities require an additional participation cost� It’s easy to see the philosophy of total mind-body wellness alive in Luisenpark Activities built with entire families in mind, opportunities for growth and education, and relaxation focus on a total life balance�
The park is great place for kids and there’s enough to do that you won’t get bored It’s a great place to practice your photography, take a jog or even meditate in a perfectly manicured garden space Some criticisms of Luisenpark include the entrance fee but considering the diversity of exotic animals and rare plants, the entrance fee is a small price to pay for a lovely spring or summer afternoon

EXPLORE GERMANY’S NATIONAL PARKS

Germany has many fascinating cities to explore, but you are missing out on some of the country’s most awe-inspiring sights if you don’t venture out into the wild.
There are 16 national parks in Germany, each one with its own distinctive identity and unique beauty Whether hiking trails, discovering a new lake or following the path of a historical figure, Germany’s national parks offer a fun place to spend your summer weekends
All 16 parks are worth exploring during your time in Germany, but here’s our list of the five you should prioritize this summer�
Eifel National Park
Eifel National Park is the perfect choice for history buffs The park encompasses a former World War II training ground� Some parts of the park are not open to the public because of the Glasmine 43 mines that still exist near the dam of the Urft Reservoir Even if you are feeling adventurous, the areas of
the park that were sown with glass mines are fenced off and entering them is strictly forbidden
About 150 miles of paths are open to visitors� On these paths, you can see the park’s native animal and plant species It is home to more 7,100 of them� The park also offers frequent, free guided tours with a trained ranger Information about these tours, as well as other events, are available at the Eifel National Park Forestry Office�
Eifel National Park makes for a perfect day trip It is about a 2 1/2hour drive from Kaiserslautern�
Black Forest National Park
The towns in the Black Forest area may be best known for cuckoo clocks and cake, but Black Forest National Park is full of its own treasures The park stretches between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt

There are three suggested hiking paths inside the park: the Lynx path, the wilderness path and the Lotharpfad� The Lynx path allows you to see the forest from the perspective of the mighty cat The wilderness path shows off the power of nature, and the Lotharpfad takes you through the path of the 1999 storm “Lothar�” This national park is also home to gorgeous waterfalls
You can take either a day trip or spend a weekend camping inside the park in a permitted area The Black Forest National Park is about two hours and 45 minutes by car from Kaiserslautern
Kellerwald-Edersee
National Park
Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is for true nature lovers It is a Luzulo-beech forest While there is small-animal life in this park, the trees are the highlight There is even a walkway built up at the top of the trees, called the Baumkronenweg am Edersee, that allows you to experience the park from all angles
Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is about a three-hour drive from Kaiserslautern
Berchtesgaden
National Park
Berchtesgaden National Park is
the only alpine national park in Germany, and the views are stunning It is located in southeast Bavaria on the border with Austria and is dotted with gorgeous lakes and towering mountains� In the center of the park is the famous Lake Koenigssee, which features St Bartholomew’s Church, a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church, at its shore Many visitors to the park are completing the pilgrimage of St� Bartholomew
Berchtesgaden is also home to two of Germany’s five glaciers It is the perfect choice for hikers or photographers looking to capture some of the best views in the country
Berchtesgaden National Park is about a six-hour drive from Kaiserslautern
Jasmund National Park
Jasmund National Park is a nature reserve near the Baltic Sea It is famous for containing the largest chalk cliffs in Germany, known as the “Koenigsstuhl,” meaning “king’s chair” in German
It is the smallest national park in Germany but one of the most unique It is home to many rare plants and animals Bird watchers come from all over to try to spot some of the rare birds nesting in the area
Jasmund is a nine-hour drive from Kaiserslautern, but the views and the experience are worth it

We live in a fast-paced world with children often sipping on drinks other than water and snacking on sugary or starchy foods throughout the course of a day
One of the risk factors for early childhood cavities is frequent and prolonged exposure of a baby’s teeth to liquids such as fruit juice, milk or formula, which all contain sugar� Americans are consuming foods and drinks high in sugar and starches more often and in larger portions than ever before Junk foods and drinks gradually have replaced nutritious beverages and foods for many people Alarmingly, the average teenage boy in the U S consumes 81 gallons of soft drinks each year
A steady diet of sugary foods and drinks can ruin teeth Sugar on teeth provides food for plaque bacteria, which produce acid� The
acid in turn can eat away the enamel on teeth, creating cavities
Almost all foods have some type of sugar that cannot and should not be eliminated from our diets Many of these foods contain important nutrients and add enjoyment to eating, but there is a risk for tooth decay from a diet high in sugars and starches
Starches can be found in everything from bread to pretzels to salad dressing, so read labels and plan carefully for a balanced, nutritious diet for you and your kids
Here are some ways to reduce your child’s risk of tooth decay:
• Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed with meals Saliva production increases during meals and helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth�
• Limit between-meal snacks If kids crave a snack, offer them nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables and cheese
• If your child chews gum, make it sugarless� Chewing
sugarless gum after eating can increase saliva flow and help wash out food and decay-producing acid There are some great options available that list xylitol as the first ingredient, which is preferred over the sugar substitute sorbitol
• Monitor beverage consumption Instead of soft drinks, juices and sports drinks, children should consume water and low-fat milk
• Help your children develop good brushing and flossing habits Parents need to help children brush twice and floss once daily

ummer is here, which means the kids are out of school for over two months Every day cannot include an organized activity or costly outing Here are three home activities that will keep the kids busy on those quiet summer days at home
Homemade Sidewalk Chalk
• Disposable cups
• Water
• Tempera paint, any colors
• Plaster of Paris, dry powder
• Silicon molds
• For each color, you will need a separate cup
1 Fill each cup with 3/4 cup water Add 1/4 cup of paint Add 1 cup Plaster of Paris� Mix well
2 Pour the mixture into molds, and clean the edges with a paper towel Allow the mixture to dry for 24 hours
3� Carefully remove the mostly dried mixture from the molds They will still be soft, so be gentle Let them finish drying outside the molds for an additional 24 hours�
4 Send the kids outside to make art with their new chalk�

Homemade Bubbles
• 6 cups water
• Large container
• 1 cup dish soap
• 1 tablespoon glycerin or 1/4 cup of corn syrup
• Bubble wand or straw
1 Measure water into a large container Pour dish soap into the water, and slowly stir until the soap is mixed in� Try not to let foam or bubbles form while you stir
2� Add glycerin or corn syrup to the mixture Stir the solution until it is mixed together
3� You can use the solution right away, but to make even better bubbles, put the lid on the container and let your super bubble solution sit for 24 hours�
4 If using Ultra brand dish soap, double the amount of glycerin or corn syrup�
5 Dip the bubble wand or straw into the mixture, slowly it pull out, wait a few seconds, then blow Your own homemade bubbles!

• Small terracotta pot
• Acrylic paint, any colors
• Assorted beads
• Waterproof string
• 2 washers
1 Paint your pot and let it dry
2 String your beads on however many strands of waterproof string you desire Use long strands of varying lengths to add dimension to the wind chime Make sure there is a knot at the bottom and top of each string Leave some extra cord at the top
3� Once the pot is dry, tie your bead strings securely to your first washer, leaving a few inches free at the top Poke the strings through the top of the garden pot and tie them securely around the second washer
4� Tie all the strings into a knot at the ends to form a loop to hang the wind chimes

Unfortunately, family and personal responsibilities can prevent people from being able to hop on a plane and get away. One of the many benefits of life in the Kaiserslautern Military Community is being surrounded by some of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. Culture is only a car ride away. Local travel photographer and perpetual wanderer, Elizabeth Jones, shared a few of her favorite day trip locations in Germany and France, as well as what makes them so special.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a quaint, charming German village that Jones says everyone should see at least once “It is located along the Romantic Road in Bavaria Exploring Rothenburg will make you feel as if you traveled back to medieval times For the best views of the city, walk around the gated city walls ” Along with taking in the great views, Jones recommends dining in the city “Don’t be surprised if you end up stuffing your face with Schneeballs, which are delicious pastries that resemble snowballs Choose between chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, cinnamon or powdered sugar Or you could just try them all!” She also recommends visiting stores and museums throughout the city “Take a tour of the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum, shop inside of the famous, Christmas themed Kaethe Wohlfahrt store Rothenburg also has some of the best Christmas markets in Germany But whatever time of year it is, this city is a must see!”
Colmar
Moving from Germany to France, Jones recommends a stop in Colmar� Located along the Alsatian Wine Route in the Alsace region of France, Colmar has many attractive qualities� “Colmar’s atmosphere resembles a country town, giving it a lingering and enchanting presence It has been preserved from the ravages of time, giving any visitor a sense of appreciation� You’ll want to stop at “Little Venice” to embrace the canals winding through the eight centuries of French and German architecture ” Jones recommends souvenir shopping in Colmar as well� “Colmar will surprise you with the amount of small boutiques, local shops, and quality products You will easily be able to take a little part of Colmar home with you!”
The last day trip that Jones recommends is Strasbourg, France Strasbourg is located near the French and German border, making it ideal for a short trip from the Kaiserslautern area “It is easy to be charmed by the mixture of French and German culture in Strasbourg It looks like it belongs in a classic fairytale storybook The Rhine River winds through the city and is sprinkled with bridges to cross the river Strasbourg is quaint and picturesque, particularly in the most popular quarter, known as Petite France Once you leave this French town, you will already be planning your next visit ” Long voyages are not necessary to enjoy Europe A short road trip is all you need to take in amazing views and eat delicious foods� Take Jones’ advice and hit the road

DOLOMITES WELCOME TO ADVENTURE ITALY

In northern Italy, where the massive Dolomite mountains dominate the land, you can find a different sort of country. This is adventure
Italy. Adventure Italy gets your heart pumping. For example, we asked a lifelong local to recommend a remote hike that was still reasonable enough for a family of five to conquer. He raised one eyebrow, said,
“I
know
a place,” and sat down to scribble out directions.
An hour later, we were deep in the gorgeous peak-and-meadow terrain of the Trentino Alto-Adige Dolomites Things were looking promising when we took a sharp right from a well-traveled highway after seeing a sign for our trailhead� It was only a few kilometers away� Easy, right?
Not exactly The road to our trailhead could only be described as insane After beginning with a narrow strip of concrete that looked as if it had been stapled on to the edge of an Ewok hut complex next to a rushing mountain stream, we entered a
series of hallucination-inducing lightless tunnels These were followed by multiple single-lane hairpin turns and blind curves squeezed between 10-foot-tall rock walls�
Then, somehow, the road got worse The pavement crumbled and guardrails disappeared� Cliffs plunged three hundred feet straight down Suddenly, on a road that was only slightly better than a semi-paved jeep trail, we came face-to face with a concrete truck Judging from the lack of road concrete, the driver appeared simply to have been there for a joy ride
When we finally parked, I took my shak-
ing hands from the wheel and muttered to my wife, “I’d hate to see the road that isn’t safe for families to travel ”
Nevertheless, we were thrilled to be in the Dolomites, which contain some of the best hiking in the world The views are astounding, especially in the Cortina d’Ampezzo region There, the earth looks like nothing else, anywhere Spires point like massive bony fingers toward unassailable blue sky Immense rock fields stretch below chalky rust-streaked vertical cliffs Green meadows shimmer on distant hillsides across sea-wide valleys

Brilliant summer hikes can be had throughout the Dolomites, which encompass a series of national parks and gorgeous mountainous terrain You should definitely invest in a guide book, but here are two areas that provide can’t-miss beauty
• 1� Cortina d’Ampezzo� Head west on SR 48 from Cortina d’Ampezzo Adventure opportunities are everywhere along the twisty narrow road, as are classic Dolomite spires and peaks
• 2 � Bellunesi National Park, near the southern end of the Dolomites, offers rugged mountains, secret hikes, and plenty of streams, springs, and greenery
the larger cities like Feltre and Cortina The southern end of the Dolomites are close to the worldfamous Prosecco wine-growing region, where vines cover every inch of earth, including hilltops, in a way that is beautiful and unique Best of all, the Dolomites are
vast enough that it is possible to find yourself alone, even in the summer When this occurs, it is hard to describe how satisfying it feels to be a living creature on a mountain, just one small piece of a brilliant universe It makes the journey, and all that it entails, worthwhile�
