86th Airlift Wing conducts change of command, welcomes new commander

Airmen assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing welcomed Col. Denny R. Davies as the new 86th AW commander June 10.

Brig. Gen. Adrienne L. Williams relinquished command to Davies during a ceremony, presided over by Brig. Gen. Stephen P. Snelson, U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa deputy commander. Williams commanded the wing from May 17, 2024, to June 10, 2026. She set a vision that strengthened partnerships and prioritized executing the 86th AW’s litany of no-fail missions.

During the ceremony, Snelson passed along praise from Maj. Gen. Paul D. Moga, the Third Air Force commander who was unable to attend the ceremony.

“For the past two years, Gen. Williams provided exactly that leadership – she led the 86th Airlift Wing with class and excellence, constantly hopping from one crisis to another,” Snelson said. “She never lost her poise and always remembered to take care of her people and their families.”

SAINTE-MÈRE-ÉGLISE, FRANCE — A quaint town with stone-paved streets leads visitors to a local airborne museum; directly across the street stands the famous Church of Sainte-Mère-Église, featuring a mannequin paratrooper hanging from its steeple.

Over 200 military personnel gathered at the church to walk through downtown toward the town hall meeting with their respective French families. U.S. and Allied service members were welcomed into the homes of Normandy families to share home-cooked meals, exchange gratitude, and honor the heritage during the commemoration of the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, June 2.

Through consistent learning and engagement, service members broadened their understanding and deepened their sense of purpose in service.

“It’s a rare chemistry of ‘I’ve got your back, you got my back,’ you don’t find that, and the fact that we have that here is amazing,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Navas, 173rd Mobile Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) 11 bravo. The Normandy family dinners originated from a bonded history dating back to June 1944. One local family that fled German occupation in 1940 established roots in SainteMère-Église. The Bertot household and local

community members continued this timehonored tradition by fostering friendships between Americans and French families.

“My mom loves Americans. I think for a lot of people over there [in Normandy], that’s the sentiment,” said Carine Bertot, daughter of the host family. “We are very grateful for the liberation; it’s always a very joyful period. It’s a strong link to our loved ones because my grandparents lived through that. They told me about it, so I have this direct connection, and my parents have it with their parents.”

Carine recalled a story from her grandmother, Monique, who lived in Paris before the family fled Nazi occupation. These stories, like many from World War II veterans and survivors, are rooted in preservation, resilience and a shared connection through love and courage.

“My grandma told me about it. It was a very big trauma for her because she was 12 years old at the time,” Carine said. “She said, ‘We had to put everything we had on the train. Everybody was trying to get on the train and run away.’ She remembered that the train couldn’t even move because there were people on the rails. People were scared.”

The recollection brought a sense of awe, as a mother’s love doesn’t stop at a homecooked meal but through the safety and happiness of their kin. U.S. Airmen and Soldiers sitting at the table enjoyed a heartwarming meal and reflected on these stories

shared by their French hosts.

“I think it’s important to have this dinner to reminisce on the history and not forget what we are celebrating and remembering together,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Lam Cate, 14th Air Support Operations Squadron tactical air control party member. “It’s amazing to immerse different cultures and to build new relations, continuing these traditions for years to come.”

The Bertot family has a long tradition of stepping up when others are in need. At 15 years old, Carine’s paternal grandmother, Marie-Josephe, demonstrated remarkable bravery by hiding an American soldier on her family’s farm before German patrols discovered him.

“We live near Utah beach, our life is here; we always live with the memories of the Americans,” said Christin Bertot, hostess for the Normandy family dinner. “When we were younger, we would roam the beach and play hide-and-seek in the bunkers. My parents always spoke of the Americans with gratitude.”

Carine chimed in with joy, reflecting on her own memories of playing in the old bunkers.

While we recognize the sacrifices of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy and parachuted behind enemy lines in World War II, their legacy endures as these places are remembered in fondness, gratitude, and courage; embracing the friendships and bonds of a new generation of service members.

“If there’s one thing our wing proved over the last two years, it’s that readiness is more than a metric, it’s a mindset,” said Williams. “When I reflect on the last two years, I don’t think first about the statistics, awards, or operations, I think about the people.”

Additionally, on Dec. 4, 2024, when a massive industrial fire erupted in Landstuhl, she enabled U.S. Air Force firefighters from Ramstein to join German emergency responders in a coordinated effort to extinguish the blaze.

Williams emphasized the critical role of the wing’s Total Force Airmen who support global operations daily. She concluded by commending their readiness and ability to strengthen access, basing, overflight, and burden sharing through relationships with strategic Allies, Partners, Joint services, interagency partners, and local leaders.

“The Global Gateway succeeds because of the relationships we built with our host nation partners, our local communities, our NATO allies, our joint teammates, and each other,” Williams said. “Those relationships matter. They create trust, trust creates teams, teams create capability, and capability is victory.”

As Davies assumed command, he expressed deep gratitude for the 86th AW’s commitment to the mission and expressed his confidence the wing will remain a strong force in the Department of War as the nation’s Global Gateway.

“Time and again, this wing stands in the breach to ensure mission success, peace, and prosperity from the East Coast of the United States to the Far East, from the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Africa,” said Davies. “Morning, noon, and night, the Global Gateway stands firm in support of the most consequential operations of the 21st century.”

Previously, Davies commanded the 19th Airlift Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, and served as deputy commander at the 86th AW. Additionally, he is a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft command pilot with more than 2,500 flying hours and six deployments supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

The 86th AW supports the headquarters for USAFE-AFAFRICA, Third Air Force, three tenant wings and more than 120 mission partners to include 56,000 U.S. service members, Department of War civilians, and their families in the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“May God bless us, and may each of us be worthy of the privilege of serving our great nation,” said Davies. “Let's get to work.”

The tradition evolved through Prussian military customs, with unit flags representing a unit’s identity, trust and heritage. In the U.S., the ceremony reflects the enduring principle of leadership continuity and civilian control of the military, symbolized today by the passing of the unit flag from one commander to the next.

Off-Base Housing

Those residing in economy housing are authorized reimbursement of up to the last 10 nights immediately preceding your departure (counting backwards from your departure/ port call date).

Note: TLA is not authorized, if sleeping accommodations, either personal or FMS loaner furniture, are still in place.

Temporary Furniture

Departing service members are entitled up to 90 days of temporary furniture prior to departure; this allows you time to arrange for an earlier pickup of household goods. After contacting TMO to arrange for the pickup of household goods and transportation arrangements, you can reach out to the Furnishings Management Section to schedule temporary furniture and the pickup of any loaned appliances, if residing in the local economy.

On-Base Out-Processing

» At least 40 days prior to your anticipated departure date, visit the Housing Office during walk-in hours to schedule your Preand Final Inspections for Military Family Housing.

» Come prepared with a copy of your orders and departure information.

» Once the Final Inspection is completed, the Facilities Inspector will sign any necessary clearance documents for your out-processing checklist.

» If you do not have orders or a departure call date, only the Pre-Inspection can be scheduled. A separate visit will be necessary to schedule the Final Inspection once orders and a port call date are confirmed.

Off-Base Out-Processing

» Provide your Landlord a minimum of 30 days written termination notice (form provided from the Housing Office).

» Contact the UTAP and FMS offices for outprocessing instructions and guidance on terminating utility services, if applicable.

» Schedule a final walk-through of the home with your LL and complete the required Premises Condition/Inventory Form (333A) with the LL.

» The LL MUST complete sections 19 and 20.

Progressive Skills Training at LRMC

Clinical staff assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center participate in Battlefield Injury Progressive Training led by the Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry in collaboration with the European Medical Simulation Center, April, in Landstuhl. More than 250 joint-service medical personnel completed a three-phase, high-fidelity training program using realistic patient scenarios to strengthen trauma care skills, critical thinking and team performance. Ramstein Pharmacy modernizes prescription process with virtual queue

The 86th Medical Group pharmacy is modernizing its prescription pickup experience by implementing a fully virtual queue system June 29 at the clinic.

The updated process will remove the pharmacy’s in-lobby kiosk and transition patients to Q-Anywhere, a virtual queue platform that allows users to request prescription activation remotely from a phone or computer. The transition applies to all Tricare beneficiaries and allows patients to join the queue from home, work or anywhere with internet access.

The need for the transition began earlier this year after the pharmacy’s lobby kiosk became inoperable, prompting staff to explore alternative solutions. Rather than replacing the system with another physical machine, pharmacy staff implemented the use of Q-Anywhere.

The new system is designed to improve efficiency while giving beneficiaries greater flexibility in how they access available services. During a February-to-April pilot program, Ramstein pharmacy leadership found the updated process reduced average processing time from 284 minutes to 82 minutes.

“Patients no longer have to wait in the lobby wondering when their medications will be ready,” said Maj. Brian Nibbelink, 86th Medical Group chief of pharmacy services. “With the new system, patients receive a notification as soon as their prescription is ready for pickup.”

The improvement was attributed to increased efficiency, improved communication and the elimination of bottlenecks associated with the traditional prescription activation process.

While prescriptions will continue to be processed Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the virtual queue will remain available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing greater flexibility for shift workers and others who may need to submit requests outside standard operating hours.

“The virtual queue system allows us to prioritize urgent medications, such as antibiotics, pain medications and sick-call prescriptions, so we can begin processing them more quickly after a patient’s appointment,” Nibbelink said.

In addition to the virtual queue

transition, active duty service members can now use the pharmacy’s over-the-counter medication program through Q-Anywhere without requiring a prescription.

Available medications include treatments for allergies, heartburn, cough and cold symptoms, dry or itchy skin, and pain management.

The program is available exclu-

sively to active duty service members, allowing them to address common minor health concerns more conveniently while reducing unnecessary clinic visits.

“These changes make the pharmacy experience more convenient by allowing patients to wait where it is most comfortable for them rather than standing in line,” said Senior Airman Brianna

While the lobby kiosk will be removed, in-person assistance will still be available. Patients with paper prescriptions will continue to have access to a separate dropoff queue inside the pharmacy lobby, and pharmacy staff will remain available to assist beneficiaries throughout the transition.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during this transition and want beneficiaries to know we are here to assist them throughout the process,” Barker said.

Ramstein pharmacy leadership encourages beneficiaries to begin familiarizing themselves with the Q-Anywhere system before the June 29 launch to help ensure a smooth transition.

Medical Readiness Command, Europe hosts 3rd Theater Medical Command leaders

ABC in KMC: Otterberg’s Spring Queen

If you’ve driven through Otterberg, you’ve likely noticed the handsome half-timbered houses along the main street— but you might also have wondered why a town of this size has such an enormous church, or why a place of roughly 6,000 people bears the sign “Wallonenstadt Otterberg,” marking it as a city.

Otterberg’s past explains both. In 1145 Cistercian monks founded an abbey here. The Cistercians preferred sites in river valleys or marshy terrain, and, as a sign of their humility and purity, they chose to build the monastery beside the Otterbach stream.

The large monastic church, originally part of the Cistercian monastery, was constructed between 1168 and 1254. It dominates the townscape and is the largest sacred building in its original form in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, only a few square meters smaller than the cathedral in Speyer, which has undergone several restorations after repeated damage.

After centuries of monastic life, the church was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin following the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Wallonenstadt Otterberg

In 1579 Palatine Count Johann Casimir permitted religious refugees from the Spanish Netherlands — exiled Calvinists known as Walloons — to settle in the abandoned monastery. His decree allowed parts of the complex to be converted into housing while protecting key structures, including the church, the chapter house, and the abbey house.

About 400 people arrived at first, but the industrious settlement expanded quickly. By 1581 Otterberg’s population had grown to roughly 1,600 and the town was granted city rights, which it still retains today.

The Walloons, mainly from the French speaking part of Belgium, were proficient cloth makers and tanners, blacksmiths, carpenters and skilled craftsmen. Many buildings in the historic district

were built by these skilled workers, such as the oldest house, the Ferkelsche Haus, which was built in 1606, the Alte Apotheke (pharmacy), which was built in 1608, and the Blaues Haus, which was built in 1612.

Edifices built in the 17th and 18th centuries can still be found on the main street today with the Walloons and their craftsmanship playing a significant role in shaping the character of Otterberg. The square in front of the church features a granite sculpture of historic life and times in the city and the neighboring Altstadt is great for strolling and dipping into the age of the Walloons. In 1708 shared use of the church by Protestants and Catholics sparked conflicts. To resolve them, a dividing wall was erected inside: Catholics used the transept while Protestants worshipped in the nave. The partition remained until 1979, when it was taken down and the church returned to joint use by both denominations.

Behind the church is a fragrant herb garden, open to visitors on summer weekends. A smaller sister church, also built by the Cistercians, is the Klosterkirche in nearby Enkenbach.

The church offers grandiose classical concerts throughout the seasons. An evening

marked by youthful voices and great a cappella music across the centuries – the Youth Concert Choir of the CHORAKADEMIE at the Konzerthaus Dortmund e.V. invites you to its concert on June 21.

Long live the Spring Queen!

Since the mid-18th century, the Spring Festival has been celebrated in Otterberg every two years. In the shadow of the monumental building of the Abbey Church, the people of Otterberg meet with their guests from near and far for a joyful festival weekend. The festival is held on Saturday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. by the mayor and the Spring Queen on the square in front of the Abbey Church. With entertainment music provided by the Otterberg “Harmony” Music Association, the enthronement of the queen with her entourage is celebrated in a merry gathering. From around 8:30 p.m., the stage belongs to a well-known live band from the region.

But beware, at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, citizens of Otterberg are awakened by loud resounding cannon shots. This is at the same time the starting signal for the music club “Harmonie,” which parades through town for a musical wakeup call and followed by an invitation for a tasty break. Everyone is

warmly invited to march through the streets early in the morning. The festival’s highlight is a historic, colorful parade at 1:00 p.m. along the decorated main street. Over 1,000 participants bring Otterberg’s past to life in period costumes, led by lively fanfare bands. The procession features Cistercian monks, Walloons, Huguenots, and the town’s night watchman, followed by the Spring Queen in a festooned carriage drawn by stately horses and her court. The original city mayor, Lambert la Croix, who presided when Otterberg received its city rights in 1581, is also represented. Kindergartens and all elementary schools with colorful wreaths and sticks will join the procession with hundreds of students. Local clubs and businesses will

enrich the colorful scene with decorated floats and themed walking groups.

After the parade, all guests walk together to the forest festival location, which is about 3 kilometers outside the town on the country road to Höringen. Families celebrate in the forest, with music provided by various bands from neighboring communities, and local caterers will take care of the guests’ physical wellbeing. The popular pony rides will take place again, and in any case, all children will receive free pretzels from the Spring Queen and the city council. Cleaning up streets: Ramstein AB removes first abandoned vehicles

After almost two years of planning and coordinating with multiple agencies across base, Ramstein officials have formally begun a large-scale cleanup initiative to remove abandoned vehicles in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The first abandoned vehicle was removed from the Ramstein Law Center parking lot at Ramstein Air Base, May 28. “Today was actually a big day,”

said Michael Bolado, 86th Force Support Squadron Community Services Flight deputy chief after the abandoned vehicle removal.

“We took all of the information that we’ve been piling up for years, and with our team collaborating, we basically moved the first car from the lot where it’s been sitting for two years to the abandoned vehicle lot.” The cleanup effort began after installation leadership noticed a growing problem with vehicles left behind by owners who permanently changed stations without properly deregistering, sell-

ing or disposing of them. “There were about 130, maybe a few more, abandoned vehicles in the KMC between Vogelweh, Kapaun and Ramstein,” said Lt. Col. Sarah Laider, 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate General Law officer in charge. “Those vehicles were abandoned with their plates off, taking up parking in the local area, taking parking away from people that need it.” In addition to taking up parking spaces, abandoned vehicles create safety hazards. Damaged vehicles often attract vandalism and theft, leaving pedestrians and

children exposed to broken glass and car parts. Service members have several options for disposing of their vehicles before departing Germany. The Auto Recycling Center helps people deregister their vehicles before surrendering them to be disposed of properly. The center handles all the paperwork and recycling process for a fee of $30. Bolado said seeing the first vehicle being removed was a significant milestone after extensive planning and coordination. “I’m glad that we got to see the end of the tunnel,” he said. “We’ve

been trying a long time to get this done, making sure we meet all the rules, the regulations, the law and everything. Today was the first one, and I was very excited to see all those people out there cheering.” Installation leadership hopes to remove all abandoned vehicles from Vogelweh, Kapaun and Ramstein within the next six weeks. “This effort is for the whole community so that we can live in a place that’s not cluttered full of abandoned vehicles,” said. “I love this community, I love this place and I want to take care of it.”

Difference between fine versus flying at 86 MXS

“It’s probably fine.”

This may be the most dangerous phrase in the world of aircraft maintenance. Not many people can say they would ever want to board an aircraft that’s been upheld on “good enough.” The Airmen assigned to the 86th Maintenance Squadron take that thought and transform the uncertainty to a fully-fledged standard of guarantees.

“Reliable aircraft win battles, but reliable Airmen are the ones who keep them in the air,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Snyder, 86th MXS electrical and environmental journeyman. “Reliable Airmen means zero guesswork for your team.”

Snyder’s relationship with responsibility and reliability was shaped by his previous duty station in the Republic of Korea. There he assisted with repairs on an F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, after a panel-related issue led to significant aircraft damage. The aircraft remained grounded for months, requiring extensive wiring repair and troubleshooting.

“The experience changed how I view responsibility,” he said. “It made me develop a ‘trust but verify’ mentality.”

He took the lessons he learned and applied them to how he handles himself as a non-commissioned officer, after arriving on station at Ramstein last February. He personally guides his Airmen to take ownership, allowing them the space to ask questions and admit mistakes rather than hide them.

“What separates a good maintainer from a great one is ownership,” Snyder said. “A good maintainer clocks in, earns his paycheck and leaves, but a great one takes full responsibility for the aircraft.”

That sense of ownership extends beyond

individual maintenance workshops at Ramstein, all stemming from the fact that maintainers from multiple specialties support one of the Air Force’s busiest mobility hubs.

Serving as the backbone of maintenance operations at Ramstein at the 86th MXS, the squadron is responsible for scheduled letter checks, inspecting aircraft systems, repairing electrical and environmental systems components, servicing liquid oxygen equipment and patient transport systems.

For newer Airmen this can be an eyeopening experience coming straight from technical training. Airman 1st Class Zachery Polzel, 86th MXS aircraft inspections journeyman, explained that many new Airmen expect to focus only on their assigned sections, but quickly learn how interconnected maintenance is across the Global Gateway.

“We’re a jack of all trades, having our hands in every aspect of maintenance and constantly evolving and innovating to make our process better,” he said.

The ability to evolve is a key piece to Ramstein’s mission, where the C-130J aircraft support operations for aeromedical evacuation missions, tactical and strategic airlift and even humanitarian relief.

“Speed is an illusion; bypassing a step in the end to save 20 minutes, you’d just end up with a broken aircraft,” Snyder said. “It’s crucial that everyone follows guidance so you don’t potentially cause loss of life.”

Reliability is often described as a characteristic of a machine. In reality though, it begins as a characteristic of people. Aircraft only become reliable because someone questions an assumption. That “someone” at Ramstein are the Airmen of the 86th MXS, taking the time to challenge their first answer and refusing to accept ‘probably’ as good enough.

For the Swedish Air Force, the exercise marked the first time the U.S. Air Force landed on their highway system, highlighting a growing partnership that follows Sweden’s recent accession into NATO.

Landing on a civilian highway presented unique environmental and spatial challenges compared to traditional military runways. The presence of trees and power lines surrounding the road significantly tightened the tolerable space for the aircrew, leaving little room for error. To mitigate these risks, the crew rehearsed the landings and high-speed abort emergency procedures in simulators prior to the flight.

75/250 German American Friendship Festival

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the City of Baumholder will host a joint threeday festival July 3 to 5 to commemorate 75 years of German American partnership in Baumholder and the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The festival will take place at the Baumholder Army Airfield and will include military static displays, amusement rides, food and beverage vendors, live entertainment and a July 4 fireworks show. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Family and MWR will host its “Fittest Games” competition July 25 from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Minick Field at Smith Barracks in Baumholder. A safety brief and course walk-through will begin at 9:45 a.m., with competition starting at 10 a.m. The timed “Hyrox/Crossfit” styled functional fitness competition includes nine exercises, with judges tracking repetitions, form and overall time. Male and female categories will award first-, second- and third-place winners, with all participants receiving T-shirts and top finishers earning medals and grand prizes. Public Health Command Europe hosts 71st International Military Veterinary Exchange

Public Health Command Europe recently hosted the 71st International Military Veterinary Exchange, bringing together nearly 100 veterinary leaders from 18 Allied and Partner nations to strengthen alliances, enhance global force protection, and address shared medical and agricultural challenges.

— Public Health Command Europe recently hosted the 71st International Military Veterinary Exchange, bringing together nearly 100 veterinary leaders from 18 Allied and Partner nations to strengthen alliances, enhance global force protection, and address shared medical and agricultural challenges.

The multi-day symposium served as a critical platform for international collaboration, focusing on topics ranging from the “unseen battlefield” of microscopic disease threats to advancing the standard of care for military working dogs.

Col. Anastasia McKay, commander of U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe, welcomed the attendees by emphasizing the critical need for global interoperability.

“Look around this room. We are not just colleagues; we are a united front,” McKay said during her opening remarks. “This

exchange is more than a meeting, it is a critical accelerator. Our mission here is to drive convergence, to strengthen the bonds of interoperability and to unify our efforts against shared global challenges.”

Confronting the unseen battlefield and food defense

A significant portion of the exchange centered on mitigating global health risks, specifically the prevention of transboundary diseases during military movements. Experts from Germany, Norway and the United States led discussions on translating NATO standards into effective action on the ground, ensuring line commanders understand the catastrophic agricultural and economic consequences of biological material transfer.

Simultaneously, international experts tackled food defense. Representatives from Germany and the Republic of Serbia shed light on emerging foodborne parasites, while U.S. representatives challenged the coalition to build proactive, multi-national defenses to

safeguard vital military food supply chains.

Advancing canine care and standardization

The well-being and operational readiness of military working dogs remained paramount. A major highlight of the 71st exchange was the push to standardize canine casualty care. The United Kingdom guided attendees through a comprehensive proposal for a unified, European-focused Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care model, aiming for a NATO-level operational patient care pathway.

Major James Bladen, Officer Commanding for the U.K.’s Veterinary Training Squadron, noted the importance of navigating these complex issues as a coalition.

“It’s been great to get to know colleagues from other countries and comforting to know that we’re all facing the same challenges,” Bladen said. “The best way to overcome those challenges is by coming together and discussing issues like we are this week. How we use animals in defense is something that every

interoperability.

country is feeling the pressure on, so it’s up to us to advocate for the animals and make sure they’re used in the best possible way.”

Discussions also pushed the boundaries of current practices, featuring debates on the use of electronic shock collars in MWD training led by the Netherlands and conversations on live tissue training alternatives guided by Norway. On the innovation front, the symposium explored the future of battlefield medicine, including the use of canine freeze-dried plasma for austere environments.

American revolutionary war flags flown to inspire patriotism

The American flag is a symbol of freedom and patriotism, but before the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag in 1777, many other flags were flown.

As America celebrates 250 years of freedom, here’s a look at a few of the various United States flags flown during combat by soldiers, sailors, Marines and militia during the American Revolutionary War. Flags were a significant part of the war, as they served to instill esprit de corps in the men and also aided in rallying the troops, as the flag carrier led from the

front. They expressed liberty and national identity, as well as a means to assert sovereignty against British rule.

The use of colors — the term for the banners and flags — dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe, when knights displayed their distinctive symbols and colors on their shields to identify one another on the battlefield. The ancient Romans and Greeks also carried banners with symbols of their leaders into battle.

Today, the American flag, also known as the Stars and Stripes and Old Glory, serves to unite the nation and inspire patriotism. Although military units have their own colors, all fly the American flag higher, giving it the most prominent position.

The Hopkinson flag

Most historians agree that Francis Hopkinson was the designer of the first official American flag. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Hopkinson flag, calling it the Stars and Stripes.

Since there were only 13 states then, the design featured 13 stripes and 13 sixpointed stars arranged in rows on the field of blue. He also designed a very similar flag for the Navy, which looks similar to today’s flag because the red stripes are located at the top and bottom.

The Hopkinson flag was first carried into combat during the Battle of Brandywine, Sept. 11, 1777, just outside Philadelphia.

Hopkinson also helped design the Great Seal of the United States and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence; many consider him a Founding Father.

The Serapis flag

Featuring 13 blue, red and white stripes and 13 stars, the Serapis flag design is similar to the Hopkinson flag except for the arrangement of stars and the blue stripes.

The flag has an unusual origin story: it was named for the Royal Navy frigate HMS Serapis.

The Serapis engaged the American warship USS Bonhomme Richard under the command of Continental Navy Capt. John Paul Jones in the North Sea near England on Sept. 23, 1779.

The battle resulted in the capture of the Serapis. Jones’ ship was badly damaged and sank, so he sailed the Serapis to the neutral Dutch port of Texel without a flag — technically making him a pirate.

Benjamin Franklin, then an ambassador to France, was asked to provide a flag that Jones could use. Once created, the flag diffused the diplomatic tension, and Jones was released by the Dutch.

The Serapis flag was one of the first flags of the United States, although it was never used in an official capacity. However, it is strongly associated with Jones and his heroics as one of the great captains of the Continental Navy and his contributions to the war effort.

The flag is used to this day on the USS John Paul Jones, a missile destroyer commissioned in 1991 to honor the famous captain. It is sometimes called the Franklin flag in honor of the Founding Father who helped create it.

The Grand Union flag

Also known as the Congress flag, the Cambridge flag and the Continental Union flag, the Grand Union flag is the first national flag of the United States; it was flown from 1775 to 1776.

The Grand Union flag consisted of 13 red and white stripes with the British Union Jack located in the area now occupied by stars. The flag was first flown by Continental Navy Lt. John Paul Jones on Dec. 3, 1775, on the USS Alfred.

The Betsy Ross flag Betsy Ross was a professional upholsterer in Philadelphia from the early 1770s until she retired in 1827. While there is no historical evidence, many people believe she designed the American flag. During and after the war, Ross made a variety of military flags over the course of 50 years.

The Betsy Ross flag is similar to the other flags in that it has 13 stripes and 13 stars on a field of blue, but rather than rows, her design includes five-pointed stars arranged in a circle.

holiday or multi-day hiking itinerary, Kufstein deserves a place on your list. Set on the River Inn in the Austrian state of Tyrol, Kufstein sits between dramatic limestone peaks and green valleys, with a compact historic center that’s easy to explore over a weekend. It’s large enough to keep you occupied for a few days, but small enough that you never feel rushed.

Here are five reasons to visit:

1. Kufstein Fortress

There are plenty of beautiful old towns in Austria. Very few have a fortress rising directly above them. Festung Kufstein has stood in some form since the 13th century and became strategically important because of its position near the historic border between Bavaria and Tyrol. Over centuries, it changed hands multiple times and was expanded into the structure visitors see today.

What makes it memorable isn’t just the history: It’s the setting. You reach the fortress either on foot or via a short funicular ride built into the rock. Once at the top, the views open across the Inn Valley toward the surrounding mountains. Inside the complex are courtyards, old prison cells, exhibitions, and one of its more unusual features: the Heroes’ Organ (Heldenorgel), considered one of the world’s largest outdoor organs, which plays daily and can be heard across the town.

2. The old town feels distinctly Tyrolean Kufstein’s old town isn’t monumental or theatrical: it’s comfortable, walkable, and full of cool little hidden gems.

Start around Unterer Stadtplatz and continue toward Römerhofgasse, one of the town’s most photographed streets. You’ll find painted facades, balconies overflowing with flowers in warmer months, and narrow lanes that still feel connected to everyday local life.

The River Inn (which is an actual river, and not a place to stay!) also gives Kufstein a different atmosphere from many mountain towns. Walking along the riverfront adds openness and light that balances the denser historic streets.

For food, expect a mix of Austrian and Tyrolean classics: schnitzel, käsespätzle, dumplings, mountain cheeses, and excellent pastries. This is a place for long lunches rather than rushing between attractions.

You can experience the Alps without needing to “do the Alps”

One of Kufstein’s strengths is flexibility. You don’t need technical gear, advanced hiking ability, or an all-day mountain itinerary to enjoy the landscape. The mountains are present even when you stay close to town.

For visitors who do want to hike, the nearby Kaiser Mountains (Kaisergebirge) create a dramatic backdrop and offer everything from easy walks to more ambitious itineraries. For something gentler, lakes such as Hechtsee provide opportunities for swimming, walking, or simply spending a quiet afternoon outdoors.

Cycling routes along the Inn Valley are also popular and relatively accessible.

This makes Kufstein especially appealing if you’re travelling with people who have different ideas of a perfect holiday. One person can head into the mountains while another enjoys cafés, shops, and slower exploration in town.

There’s more culture here than first impressions suggest

Kufstein rewards visitors who stay an extra day. Beyond the fortress, the town has a surprisingly strong cultural identity shaped by Austrian and Bavarian influences. Throughout the year you’ll find concerts, seasonal festivals, local markets, and traditional events. Music also plays an outsized role in local identity. For example, the daily sounding of the fortress organ is an essential Kufstein experience.

If you enjoy travelling through places rather than simply seeing them, Kufstein offers opportunities to slow down: Visit a local bakery in the morning, browse small shops in the center, sit outside with coffee, and watch the rhythm of the town unfold.

5. Kufstein changes dramatically with the seasons

Unlike destinations that only shine in summer or winter, Kufstein works year-round.

• Late spring (May–June) is ideal if you want

green landscapes, moderate temperatures, and fewer visitors.

• Summer (July – August) brings longer days and the best conditions for hiking, cycling, and lake visits.

• Early autumn (September – October) may be the sweet spot: crisp air, clear mountain views, changing colours, and a calmer atmosphere.

• December transforms the town with festive lighting and Christmas markets, creating a more intimate alternative to Austria’s larger holiday destinations.

For first-time visitors, September is an excellent time to go. Early autumn offers the widest range of activities with comfortable weather.

Getting to Kufstein

By car, Kufstein is approximately 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3.5 hours from Stuttgart, and 5 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
