The Air Force announced an update to its physical fitness assessment standards and implementation timeline. Changes from the September 2025 announcement include a shortened physical fitness diagnostic testing period to end in June and the option for either the 2-mile run or the 20-meter High Aerobic Multishuttle Run every six months. “We care about the long-term health of our Airmen and that starts with physical fitness,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach. “The habits Airmen build by working out daily directly impact their quality of life in and out of uniform. I am confident our commanders will continue to implement a culture of fitness so our warfighters are healthy and ready." The components of the updated bi-annual PFA offer Airmen a
choice between traditional and alternative exercises: • Cardiovascular: 2-mile run or 20-meter HAMR. • Strength: One minute of pushups or two minutes of handrelease push-ups. • Core: One minute of sit-ups, two minutes of cross-leg reverse crunches, or a timed forearm plank. • Body Composition: Waist-toHeight Ratio measurement. From March 1 through June 30, 2026, all fitness tests will be diagnostic to provide Airmen time to adapt to the new standards. Beginning July 1, 2026, the Air Force will resume official testing under the new PFA standards. Fitness testing is currently paused to facilitate the transition to the updated program. Per the Secretary of War’s guidance, PFA scores will be included in officer and enlisted performance briefs beginning in February 2026.
The first groups to be affected by this change will be colonels in February 2026, then lieutenant colonels, majors, and chief master sergeants in May 2026. Senior airman EPBs closing out in in March 2026 will not include PFA scores. The most recent PFA score included on an Airman’s performance brief may include tests accomplished on previous standards. “Your physical health is important to us, not just as a readiness metric but as a human being as well,” Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe said. “When you’re physically healthy, you are not only happier, but in a better position to excel at your job.” Updated fitness score charts incorporating feedback from the field and a thorough review of score distributions will be released soon. Additionally, an updated AFMAN 36-2905, Air Force Physical Fitness Program, will be published soon.

by Airman 1st Class Dylan Myers 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Two fuels distribution operators assigned to the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron were recognized for their superior performance during a Knighting Ceremony held at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 5. The Knighting Ceremony recognized Airmen 1st Class Tariq Smith and Airman 1st Class Mario Roach for distributing one million gallons of fuel to aircraft within a single month. The milestone highlighted both individual’s sustained performance across multiple shifts
and the critical role the 86th LRS Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants flight plays in maintaining and supporting Ramstein’s global mobility mission. “This award is an incentive, but more importantly it recognizes consistency,” Smith said. “Reaching a million gallons isn’t about one big day, it’s about showing up everyday and doing the job right.” Fueling operations at Ramstein requires maintainers to service a wide range of aircraft, from the 86th Airlift Wing’s main airframes like the C-130J Hercules, C-37, and C-21 to commercial aircraft and other transient airframes.

Individual fueling operations can range anywhere from 20,000 to 300,000 gallons, often requiring long hours on the flight line at any given time. “On a heavy day, you might pump fuel for four or five aircraft just to hit 100,000 gallons,” Roach said. “And then you have to do it again the next day.” The ceremony honored the recipients endurance and teamwork and how it directly contributed to mission success. While 41 Airmen have been knighted since 2005, formal ceremonies only began in October 2024. “You each did the work of three people,” said Col. Nathan D. Bump, 86th Airlift Wing deputy commander, to the recipients during the Knighting Ceremony. “That’s a huge accomplishment and testament to your work ethic, attitude and dedication to your job.” During the ceremony, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Austin Deeney, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron commander, presented the knighting to Smith and Roach, emphasizing how individual excellence directly contributes to squadron readiness and operational success. While the ceremony recognized two Airmen, the achievement reflected a team effort that enabled aircraft to launch on time and missions to continue without delay.

Public Health Command Europe 2025: A vital prescription for health, readiness Story & photos by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe Laboratory Sciences: Public Health Command Europe's Division of Laboratory Sciences enhanced its testing capabilities by adding EPA Method 533, becoming the only in-house Department of Defense lab approved for testing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This new capability allows the lab to effectively monitor drinking water systems owned by the Department of Defense across Europe, ensuring they meet the Environmental Protection Agency's latest safety regulations for PFAS compounds. By ensuring the safety of drinking water, this initiative directly benefits service members and their families, protecting their health and well-being while they are stationed overseas. Environmental Health Sciences: Environmental Health Sciences personnel recently visited the Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches Waterworks SKW to strengthen partnerships with their German counterparts and understand water services for both the local population and military bases in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. This collaboration with Laboratory Services and Health and Human Services provided valuable insights into the processes of water sourcing, disinfection, and purification, highlighting differences between civilian and military practices. US military police attempt Norwegian sharpshooter badge by Brian Lamar 21st Theater Sustainment Command The tell-tale acrid, sulfurous odor of range day lingered in the air like a typical Baumholder fog, which was punctuated with smiles and laughter of German, Belgian and U.S. Soldiers as they exited the range while comparing silhouettes

The 18th Military Police Brigade’s 92nd MP Company, 3rd platoon, hosted a three-day combined Norwegian sharpshooter range and law enforcement weapons training and qualification range, Dec. 11, at Smith Barracks. officer in charge, the idea to host a Norwegian range was born from the idea to problem solve ways to maximize motivation within the unit. “The platoon has had several leadership and personnel shuffles recently. My platoon sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Travis Zembrzycki, and I decided to try to give our Soldiers as many opportunities as possible to solidify morale and camaraderie in the unit,” said Wyatt. Through Wyatt and Zembrzycki’s personal connections made with allied partners during previous missions, one Belgian Soldier, and more than a dozen Bundeswehr Soldiers were contacted and invited to attend the Norwegian range. According to Wyatt, Zembrzycki found out about the Norwegian Sharpshooter Badge and requested permission to run the range from the Norwegian Embassy. The platoon’s leadership team was excited to invite international allies to the event. “Sergeant Z is a strong noncommissioned officer and arguably one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met in any field,” said Wyatt. The platoon leadership team also invited other local U.S. units like the 16th Sustainment Brigade and the 554th Military Police Company from Stuttgart, which is also part of the 709th Military Police Battalion, and members of the 108th Military Police Company who is deployed to Smith Barracks from Fort Bragg, N.C. Although the Soldiers could be seen visibly enjoying the range experience and opportunity to place a foreign award on their dress uniform, it wasn’t an easy task. Wyatt and Zembrzycki noticed low passing scores on the sheets and decided to attempt the task themselves. “I saw on day two of the threeday range, that firers were averaging around a 25 percent satisfactory rate. Sergeant Z and I tried it ourselves and quickly realized our Soldiers were struggling with the

timing of the firing,” Wyatt said. Zembrzycki quickly pulled participants aside and coached them on their shot pacing and proper technique. With Zembrzycki’s additional training, range officials noticed a significant increase in passing rates. The overall completion rate for all firers rose to 32 percent with 22 qualifiers out of 67 participants. The Norwegian marksmanship event for pistols is broken into three firing sessions for 15 rounds of ammunition all at 25 meters from the target. The first session is 90 seconds for five shots. The second and third sessions are five rounds each at 15 seconds. According to Wyatt, the Soldiers were intimidated by having an imaginary clock ticking over their shoulder. “I paced myself on the first session. Five rounds in 90 seconds was easier to pace my shots to ensure proper placement on the target. The second and third rounds were difficult. You have to average an accurate shot every 3 seconds,” said Sgt. Craig Turk, a signal operations NCO
with the unit. In between groups of firers and range pauses for lunch, the U.S. Soldiers traded small tokens of appreciation for one another, such as unit patches, coins, and MREs. As the event ended, Wyatt and other range personnel gathered the targets, tallied the scores, and began readying the paperwork to be send to the attaché at the Norwegian Embassy for official accounting. “Once the scores are tallied to the corresponding anonymous roster number, the platoon submits the scores to the Norwegian embassy. Only then will we receive a by-name roster of who successfully earned their Norwegian sharpshooter badge,” said Wyatt. According to Wyatt, the platoon leadership team will stay busy planning unique professional development opportunities for their troops. Wyatt and Zembrzycki are planning future events like ranges and international foot marches with the goal to simultaneously increase unit morale and its lethality.

by Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support Brigade Europe & Africa The command team and other senior leaders from U.S. Army Sustainment Command visited multiple Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksites across Europe and met with senior leaders from the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and other key units and organizations, Dec. 9-12, 2025. Jason Gusman, ASC’s senior enlisted leader, conducted site visits and key leader engagements at the Powidz APS-2 worksite in Powidz, Poland; the Coleman APS-2 worksite in Mannheim, Germany; and the Theater Logistics Support CenterEurope in Kaiserslautern, as well as the 405th AFSB headquarters and the 21st TSC headquarters, plus more. The top leaders from Rock Island, Illinois, arrived in Germany Dec. 9 and spent four days traveling across Europe to places like Poznan and Powidz, Poland, where they met with personnel from the 405th AFSB’s Logistics Readiness Center Poland and Army Field Support Battalion-Poland. Shirley and Gusman also spent time engaging with senior sustainers and logisticians at the 405th AFSB’s headquarters on Daenner
Kaserne and the 21st TSC’s headquarters on Panzer Kaserne, both located in Kaiserslautern. In addition, they walked through TLSC-E facilities at the Kaiserslautern Industrial Center while being briefed by TLSC-E and 21st TSC key leadership. When speaking to the 405th AFSB team at the brigade headquarters, Shirley reflected on 2025 and the demands placed on the brigade and ASC during such a pivotal year. He commended the team on their dedication and hard work and thanked them for their continued commitment to the ASC and brigade missions. “The reputation of this organization is absolutely sterling. Like ASC, it comes with a lot of hard work put in over not only years and decades, but really on a day-to-day basis,” Shirley said to the brigade team. “You’re the face to the field. You bring it all together, synchronizing all aspects of the enterprise. At the point of need, you synchronize, integrate and deliver enterprise effects. So today, on behalf of the entire ASC team, we’re going to say thank you.” Shirley assumed command of ASC in July of 2025. Previously, he served as the commanding general of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky. With about 32 years of active-duty service, Shirley is one of the Army’s top leaders. Year in review: Medical Readiness Command Europe enhances combat readiness, strengthens partnerships in 2025 by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe Medical Readiness Command, Europe significantly advanced medical combat readiness and solidified partnerships with allied and host-nation forces throughout 2025, officials announced. The command spearheaded multiple initiatives across Europe and Africa, ensuring U.S. Army medical assets are prepared for large-scale combat operations while simultaneously fostering interoperability
with international partners. “Our primary mission continues to be the individual and collective readiness of the medical force while providing high quality Health Service Support/Force Health Protection capabilities to enable the readiness of supported commands across U.S. Army Europe and Africa,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe. “The complex training exercises and military exchanges we conducted through-
out 2025 have, without a doubt, strengthened our medical capabilities and reinforced our commitment to our NATO allies and partners.” A key highlight of the year was the MRC,EUR Best Leader Competition, a rigorous event designed to assess and enhance the skills of medical Soldiers. This competition tested Soldiers’ medical proficiency, leadership abilities, and physical endurance, ensuring they are prepared for the demanding conditions of the modern battlefield. Interoperability remained a central theme throughout the year, with MRC,EUR actively participating in several multinational events. The command facilitated a Key Leader Exchange with the Swiss military, fostering collaboration and better understanding between U.S. and Swiss medical leaders. MRC,EUR also supported the NATO Medical Planners Course in April, enhancing the ability of multinational military medical planners to effectively coordinate medical support during joint operations. UNITED KINGDOM - Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel take part in the sixweek specialized Platoon Combat Medical Training Program conducted recently in the United Kingdom. dogs and other animals crucial to military operations. Through these diverse initiatives, MRC,EUR demonstrated its commitment to ensuring the medical readiness of U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa while simultaneously strengthening partnerships with allied and host-nation medical forces. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz reflects on achievements of 2025 by USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs As 2025 comes to a close, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz looks back on the year and the accomplishments that demonstrate its commitment to set, serve and secure the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater. At the start of fiscal year 2025, the garrison’s Directorate of Public Works was recognized for carrying out initiatives that led the Army with $2.7 million in energy savings. As a result, the garrison earned 14 percent of the total available Resilient Energy Funding for Readiness and Modernization funding allocated for Army Materiel Command in 2024. November 2024 marked a historic milestone for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, as its Community Recreation Services became the first internationally accredited program recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association. This achievement sets a new standard for overseas accreditation within Installation Management Command Europe. The garrison also made strides in environmental stewardship with the completion of a 200 square meter, state-of-the-art Hazardous Waste Facility at Germersheim Army Depot in December 2024. In January, USAG RheinlandPfalz collaborated with U.S. Air Forces Europe-Africa to deliver a first-of-its-kind joint OPSEC II and III training and certification course at Sembach Kaserne, enhancing operational security training for
military and civilian personnel. Throughout the year, Sembach Kaserne saw a number of improvements and upgrades, including a 24/7 self-service Unmanned Retail Unit and a new launderette, improving the quality of life for Soldiers and civilians stationed at the post, along with the Directorate of Emergency Services’ launch of a Vehicle Registration office, reducing backlogs across the Kaiserslautern Military Community. In February, the fire team from the garrison’s DES earned recognition as the Best Large Fire Department for 2024 in the IMCOM-Europe region. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s youth programs received multiple national recognitions for their quality and commitment to enrichment, securing $58,000 in special grants from various organizations, including the Apple Corporation’s Community Education Initiative and Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation scholarships. Development and investment continued in Baumholder, with the garrison overseeing over $1 billion in U.S. Army investments aimed at enhancing quality of life. Projects included new and renovated Army Family Housing townhomes, a new Army Lodge, construction of a new elementary school, construction and renovation of playgrounds, PX roof repairs, upgrades and new dining options at Striker’s bowling facility, upgrades to the Wetzel Child Development Center, installation of smart postal lockers, and plans and funding for construction of a new middle-high school, new

From private to senior enlisted leader: CSM Towns comes full circle at ‘The Rock’ by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command When Command Sgt. Maj. Jason P. Towns first arrived in Baumholder in 1998, he was a young private from Texas who had never seen snow. He stepped off the bus, saw the wintry landscape and wondered, “Where in the world am I?” More than two decades later, Towns returned to that same installation in 2023 as the senior enlisted advisor for the 16th Sustainment Brigade. On Dec. 5, he formally relinquished responsibility, closing a chapter that brought his career full circle at a place Soldiers have long called “The Rock.” “When I got here the first time, I didn’t even really know where Baumholder was,” Towns recalled with a laugh. “I asked where we were going, and an old drill sergeant pointed out the window and said, ‘You see that dark spot in the clouds? That’s Baumholder. That’s The Rock.’” Baumholder was Towns’ first duty station, where he served from 1998 to 2001 with the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. It was also where he first questioned whether the Army was right for him. Returning to Germany decades later, Towns said his appreciation for the assignment had grown, shaped by the experience and perspective he did not yet have as a young Soldier. “I honestly thought my first unit might
be my last,” Towns said. “It wasn’t what I thought the Army was going to be.” He had joined during the “Be All You Can Be” era and expected something closer to recruiting commercials. Instead, he faced frequent field training and long exercise rotations. He also struggled to adjust to his military occupational specialty as a unit supply specialist, a role chosen on family advice. “I was going to be infantry, but I let my uncle talk me into going supply,” Towns said. “It didn’t take long to realize it wasn’t what I thought.” Two moments changed his trajectory. The first was advice from his company’s executive officer. “He told me not to let my first assignment decide whether I stayed in or got out,” Towns said. “He told me to go see something different.” The second came during a visit to a dining facility, where he noticed Soldiers from the Ranger Regiment. “There was a specialist with a Ranger tab on his cap and a staff sergeant with a scuba badge,” Towns said. “I remember thinking, ‘If a cook can do that, then I’m in the wrong unit.’” The encounter pushed Towns to pursue an assignment with the Ranger Regiment, where he would spend 17 years. The Regiment shaped Towns’ leadership philosophy for the rest of his career. When asked why he stayed in the Army

long enough to serve as a brigade command sergeant major, Towns gave a simple answer. “I don’t know what it’s like to quit,” he said. Over time, he explained, military service became about people rather than positions. “You fall in love with what you do,” he said. “It becomes more than a job. It becomes about taking care of people and developing leaders.” He credits much of that perspective to mentors from the Ranger Regiment, particularly his former platoon sergeant, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Tim Simpson. “He pushed me to go further than I thought I could,” Towns said. “When I started doubting myself, he’d look at me and say, ‘Relax. We’ve got this.’” Towns brought that approach back to Baumholder, making it a point not only to lead but to humanize his role. He often reminded Soldiers that small gestures of genuine care, such as handing a departing Soldier a belt buckle as a token of thanks, could turn that Soldier into someone who tells a positive Army story. “It’s those little moments of connection that leave a legacy,” Towns said. “When Soldiers realize you’re human and you care, they go on to share that experience, and that shapes how others see the Army.” Although Towns spent most of his career in the special operations community, his limited time with the 16th Sustainment Brigade broadened his understanding of large-scale sustainment operations in a contested environment. “This assignment showed me what contested sustainment looks like without rounds being fired,” he said. “Here in Europe, the challenge is often technology and spectrum warfare, but it’s still contested.”
One of the initiatives Towns drove during his tenure was Knights Academy, a weeklong integration course for all Soldiers and leaders arriving in the brigade, regardless of rank. “Whether you’re a private or a battalion commander, everyone goes through the same baseline integration,” Towns said. “It helps people understand why this brigade exists and why their role matters.” He also emphasized multinational interoperability by bringing allied partners together through recurring company-level training events. “That’s where real relationships form,” he said. “If something happens in Europe, we’re going to operate alongside our allies, and those relationships matter long before a crisis ever begins.” On Dec. 5, Towns formally relinquished responsibility as the brigade’s senior enlisted advisor to his successor, Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Ingram. One of Towns’ former platoon sergeants, a transition Towns described as especially meaningful. “It’s a proud moment,” he said. “It means you’ve done something right.” Knowing his replacement’s capabilities made the transition seamless. “I know exactly what they’re getting,” Towns said. “He cares about Soldiers, and he’ll lead in his own way.” For Towns, success was not measured by rank or positions held, but by the leaders he developed along the way. “All of my first sergeants went on to become sergeants major,” he said. “Now one of my former platoon sergeants is backfilling me at brigade level.” From a snowbound private arriving in Baumholder in 1998 to a command sergeant major handing responsibility to the next generation in 2025, Towns’ career reflects persistence, mentorship and a consistent commitment to Soldiers.

ABC IN KMC: Deutschland by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Welcome to the Kaiserslautern Military Communit. Willkommen in Deutschland! Whether you are new to the area or have been around for a while, there are probably a few things that you don’t know about your home away from home. We’ve put together a few fun facts and figures to get you acquainted with your new home right in the middle of Europe. Germany, with its official name Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland), currently has 84 million inhabitants. The capital is Berlin far northeast and about 650 kilometers (400 miles) from Kaiserslautern. Under favorable road conditions and without a stau (congestion) you can drive the distance in about six hours. It is the seat of the Bundestag (federal parliament) and Bundesrat (federal council), and Friedrich Merz has been the chancellor since May 6, 2025. Bundesländer Germany is made up of 16 Bundesländer (states) with three of them, Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, being city states. This means that they consist of one single city which are also states of their own. The 10 states in the north, west, south and southwest are generally called the “old states” as they belonged to West Germany during the division of the country from 1949 to 1989. Fives states in the northeastern section are commonly called the “new states.” Berlin held a special status since it belonged to West Germany but was located in the middle of the eastern zone and could only be reached via three transit routes or by air. Bavaria is the largest state and borders Austria and the Czech Republic. It is known for its Alpine Region, a wine growing region in the northern part and its capital Munich is world famous for its annual OctoberFest. Its neighbor to the west is Baden-Württemberg with a large wine
growing region, Germany’s largest Lake Constance to the south and is also home to the Black Forest region. Hessen to the north is in the center of Germany and is wellknown for its rolling hills, quaint towns and its specialty Äppelwoi (apple wine) as well as its banking hub Frankfurt along with Germany’s largest airport. Kaiserslautern is located in RheinlandPfalz, which produces two-thirds of Germany’s wine along the Moselle, Rhein and Nahe Rivers with cozy wine towns along the Weinstrasse (German Wine Road). The capital is Mainz and birthplace of the printing press. The small state of Saarland, just 20 kilometers down the road towards Saarbrücken, is the smallest state and joined West Germany in the year 1959 based upon an agreement with France. Our northern neighbor NordrheinWestfalen is the most densely populated state with large cities such as Cologne, the capital Düsseldorf, and the industrial Ruhrpott region with the cities of Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen and Bochum. Niedersachsen, a land of horses, agricultural plains, a coastal region along the North Sea with white beaches, islands and a maritime flair is just north. The tiny city state of Bremen, consisting of Bremen itself, famous for its city musicians, and Bremerhaven, best known as port of arrival for POVs and heavy military equipment, is Germany’s smallest city state. Hanseatic Hamburg is home to Germany’s largest port, has been a significant sea hub since the Middle Ages and is Germany’s second largest city. SchleswigHolstein lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, is home to many fishermen and the Wadden Sea natural habitat, and borders Denmark to the north. The five “new states,” formerly on East German territory, were enclosed by a 1,400 kilometer (870 mile) inner German border until 1989. Thüringen is just east of Hessen and was home to Protestant ReformerMartin Luther. Sachsen-Anhalt is known as the land of windmills and is the largest producer of wind energy in the eastern states. along the Baltic Sea, has fabulous sandy beaches and Rügen is Germany’s largest island. Sachsen and Brandenburg both border Poland along the Oder-Neisse-Line, established in 1949. Berlin lies in the middle of Brandenburg and is Germany’s largest city with 3.6 million inhabitants. While it was divided for 40 years, East Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic, and Bonn was the provisional capital of the Federal Republic of Germany during that time. Fun facts • Zugspitze at 2,962 meters (9,717 feet) is the highest mountain and was first climbed to the peak in August 1820. • The Rhein is the longest river in Germany with 865 kilometers of its total length of 1,233 kilometers flowing through the country. • Germany has a total coastal area of 2.380 kilometers (including islands), while 1.585 kilometers are mainland along the North and Baltic Seas. • The longest distance between Glückburg in the north and Sonthofen in the south is almost exactly 1,000 kilometers. • Germany fits into the United States 28
times, and 4.83 times into Alaska. • Wilstermarsch in southeast SchleswigHolstein is Germany’s deepest point at 3.54 meters (11 feet) below sea level. • Arnis in Schleswig-Holstein with a population of 300 inhabitants is Germany’s smallest city. • Trier is Germany’s oldest city, founded by Celts about 3,000 years ago, and famous for its Roman ruins and the oldest bridge in the country. • Skywalk in Willingen (Hessen) is the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, it is 665 meters (2181 feet) long, 100 meters (328 feet) above ground and was built in a Tibetan style. • Quedlinburg (Sachsen-Anhalt) was voted the prettiest city, Ludwigshafen (Rheinland-Pfalz) the most unattractive. • The Palatinate Forest is Germany’s largest coherent forest, covers a large part of Rheinland-Pfalz and stretches into France. • And, last but not least, Kaiserslautern and county are right in the heart of it and have the largest American community outside of the United States with about 50,000 people.

CYS Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Registration Baumholder Youth Sports will offer a three-week Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program for ages 6 to 12, featuring two sessions per week and no “gee” requirement. Stuffed Animal Storytime and Sleepover The popular annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover starts with children dropping off their stuffed animals Thursday, Feb. 5, at the 5 p.m. storytime, after which they will tuck them in for a library sleepover at the Landstuhl Library, Bldg. 3810 on Landstuhl Post. The stuffed animals will be picked up by their “human friends” Friday, Feb. 6, between noon and 4 p.m. Children will get to see the shenanigans that their stuffed animals got into overnight. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command Noncommissioned officers assigned to the 21st Theater Sustain ment Command with the RheinlandPfalz Sergeant Morales Club partnered with students and staff from Kaisers lautern BurgGymnasium to donate more than 150 gifts to the Kaiserslautern Tafel during a community service event held Dec. 17, 2025, at the school. Inside a BurgGymnasium classroom, wrapped gifts filled a long table and the floor beneath a chalkboard marked “Tree of Hope,” as students and adults sorted packages and checked handwritten tags. Volunteers then moved the donations through tiled hallways and down the school’s stairwell, carrying black plastic crates and holiday gift bags in steady coordination. The donations were prepared for handover. The donation supports families and children in RhinelandPalatinate who may be experiencing financial hardship. The Kaiserslautern Tafel is a registered nonprofit food bank founded in 1998 and one of the oldest in the region. According to the organization, it supports approximately 550 households and about 1,500 people in the region. The Tafel will distribute the gifts to families based on need. For members of the RheinlandPfalz Sergeant Morales Club, the event reflected the organization’s founding principles through direct engagement with the host-nation community. “At its core, community service is about building and sustaining
partnerships,” said Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Rodriguez-Pazo, president of the Rheinland-Pfalz Sergeant Morales Club. “We’re not only giving back to the military community. We’re also giving back to the communities that support us and welcome us here as guests.” Rodriguez-Pazo said in-person engagement remains a priority for the club. “What we’re doing now is strengthening those partnerships at a time when maintaining them matters more than ever,” he said. Beyond the donation, Rodriguez-Pazo said the project also reinforced leadership development among noncommissioned officers. “When you look at the NCO core competencies, especially ‘extends influence beyond the chain of command,’ this is exactly what that looks like,” he said. “Volunteerism is one way we demonstrate selfless service and servant leadership.” Kaiserslautern BurgGymnasium is a coeducational, state-funded secondary grammar school in central Kaiserslautern with a longstanding emphasis on civic engagement and international exchange. “The basic idea is to bring Germans and Americans together,” said Michael Weis, a teacher at Kaiserslautern BurgGymnasium. “We want students to get to know Americans, and we want Americans to experience a German school and community.” According to Weis, partnerships like this extend beyond a single event and contribute to long-term trust within the community. “It shows that cooperation is possible,” Weis said. “It shows that
you are part of the community, not just stationed here.” The cooperation between the Rheinland-Pfalz Sergeant Morales Club and BurgGymnasium began in 2019 and has grown into a strong partnership following the COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the second year they have organized a “Tree of Hope” for Christmas. Organizers selected the Tafel after identifying a need to support children whose families may be prioritizing essential expenses such as housing and utilities. “Even with a strong social system, there are still children who might not receive gifts,” RodriguezPazo said. “Supporting the Tafel allowed us to reach families who need it most.” Weis said efforts like this can shape how U.S. Soldiers are viewed locally, particularly by students with limited interaction with the military. “Activities like this show that Soldiers care,” Weis said. “It changes perceptions.” For the Rheinland-Pfalz Sergeant Morales Club, the event also served as a way to encourage broader participation among noncommissioned officers. “You don’t have to be a member to volunteer,” Rodriguez-Pazo said. “The club is about helping NCOs grow, strengthen community ties and become better leaders through continued service.” The Sergeant Morales Club was established in 1973 by Lt. Gen. George S. Blanchard to promote the highest ideals of integrity, professionalism and leadership among enlisted Soldiers serving in Europe.

Celebrating 50 years of Army-Navy Student Exchange Program by Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Sarah M. Thielen U.S. Naval Academy Every year at the Army-Navy football game, one of the most anticipated traditions is the “prisoner exchange,” and this year marks the 50th year of the exchange program between the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. At midfield, a handful of cadets and midshipmen are ceremonially returned to their home side of the stadium after spending the fall semester at their rival academy. “The Service Academy Exchange Program is a voluntary and competitive application process at West Point,” said Noah Keith, a class of 2027 West Point cadet. “At the beginning of second semester sophomore year, everyone with a cumulative GPA over 3.3 is invited to apply.” Under the program, cadets and midshipmen spend the fall semester at their rival academy, living in barracks, attending classes and training together alongside the other service. The memorandum of agreement between each school’s commandant formalized the process. Today, it is considered a one-for-one swap in most cases. “I got interested in the West Point exchange during my [freshman] year when I saw the prisoner exchange for the first time,” said Michael Middleton, a Naval Academy senior. “I asked my upperclassmen who they were and how they got to do that. That inter-
est grew as I became interested in commissioning as a Marine Corps officer.” Reasons for applying may differ, but for each academy, it’s not a guarantee you’ll be accepted. “West Point selects the cadets going to each of the service academies. I found out I was going to [the Naval Academy] around spring break,” Keith said. This tradition has its roots in much earlier academic exchanges and weekend trips. As far back as 1945, cadets and midshipmen began swapping campuses for short, informal weekend visits that laid the groundwork for this long-held tradition among the sister academies. “I got to study subjects like grand strategy and generalship that I would have never [gotten] the opportunity to study in Annapolis,” Middleton said. “I would recommend for everyone at USNA to apply. It was an invaluable experience to learn the joint environment and make interservice friendships.” In 1975, the program expanded into a semester-long service academy exchange. The program is designed to build professional understanding between the future officers of both services. “I have really enjoyed my time on the yard,” Keith said. “This semester I have been taking sailing lessons on the [Nonsuch] 26 sailboats and earned my [basic] qualification — I’ve had a lot of fun learning to sail and being out on the water.” On game day, the symbolic return is more

than pageantry. It marks the end of a semester spent in “enemy territory” and showcases the balance between healthy rivalry and camaraderie. Once the exchange is complete, the cadets and midshipmen rejoin their classmates in the stands to cheer on their team for the remainder of the game. “I would highly recommend the exchange experience to cadets at West Point. It has been a very rewarding experience going into and embracing a new culture and military perspective,” Keith said. The exchange serves as a symbol of unity
between branches despite the competitive nature between both service academies. The midshipmen and cadets may battle fiercely on the athletic fields, but they share the same ultimate mission. After graduation, they will serve together in defense of our nation. “Being a part of this tradition makes me feel closer to the institution and more invested in our naval service. The Army vs. Navy game is not just a sporting event for me anymore. It is a reminder of the brothers and sisters I have in the Army and how we are all fighting for each other,” Middleton said.

1. Go skiing (or snowboarding, or sledding, or snowshoeing, or…) Berchtesgaden is an all-season joy when it comes to outdoor activities. But it shines in winter. The park and its surroundings offer an absolute smorgasboard of awesome places. There are six ski resorts in the vicinity, including the Jenner ski area, with guaranteed snow throughout the winter, near Schönau am Königsee. The area is also fantastic for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow hiking. Berchtesgaden offers more than 100 kilometers of groomed trails for cross country skiers, including high-altitude ones. Snowshoeing is even more fun. Because Berchtesgaden offers so much wilderness, winter explorers can strap on snowshoes and hike…basically wherever they’d like. But the best time of all just might be sledding. For any American who grew up sledding during the winter (and even for those of you you didn’t), sledding in the Bavarian Alps is almost as good as it gets. There are dedicated sled runs in Berchtesgaden (the Obersalzberg run – talk about amazing scenery) and nearby Ramsau (the Hirscheckblitz run). Lots of little towns nearby have sled runs, too…be on the lookout for them! 2. Visit Eagle’s Nest (but not during winter) The Eagle’s Nest is one of Germany’s top tourist destinations, and for good reason. Perched more than 6,000 feet up on Mt. Kehlstein, it offers views that are among some of the most spectacular in the world. It also has a rather infamous history. The Eagle’s Nest was built for Hitler to commemorate his 50th birthday, included a golden brass elevator that cut through the Pilgrimage church of Maria Gern and Watzmann summit, Berchtesgaden.
heart of the mountain on which it stands, and was completed in 1938, just before World War II began. Generally, the Eagle’s Nest is open between May and October. Visitors are required to take a bus to reach it. Purchasing tickets online in advance is highly recommended. 3. Take a Königsee boat tour Even if some mountain peaks are a little too gnarly to tackle during winter, visitors can always find bliss on Lake Königsee. One of Germany’s most beautiful lakes (and its deepest…more than 600 feet deep, in some places), boat tours are offered year-round. The trip is well worth it. Königsee’s iconic green color (caused by lime particles dissolving in the water), location at the foot of massive Mount Watzmann, and forested, mountainous surroundings make it a photographer’s dream.

4. Go hut-to-hut hiking For outdoor enthusiasts, Europe offers one of the best mountain experiences in the world: hut-to-hut hiking. This allows hikers to get into the mountains and stay there for an extended period of time. Berchtesgaden excels at this. The national park has five mountain huts, all of which are open during warmer months (usually May to October, but check to make sure before going). If you’ve never tried hut-to-hut hiking, you should. The food (and beer, and water) is always hearty, the company is grand (you’ll make friends from all over the world), and the views are unbeatable. 5. Check out the Visitor’s Center This may seem like an obvious one, especially for American national park aficianados, where visitor center stops are more or less required. But in Germany, where national parks are free, you can go wherever you’d like most of the time. That said, be sure to check out the Berchtesgaden National Park Center, which

offers one of the best national park experiences out there. It’s got a fabulous information center, a theater, lots to do outdoors, and fun activities for the whole family. As a bonus, the views are – just like the park – superlative.
