Airmen were enjoying their meals at Eifel Lanes Bowling Center on Dec. 15, 2025, when their peaceful day suddenly turned. A heartstopping crashing sound interrupted their conversations, people enjoying their lunches whipped their heads around as a hush fell on the room, the cashier behind the counter at Papa Joe’s restaurant stood frozen in shock.
“I initially wanted to go to BUN-D in the [Base Exchange] for lunch,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Alexander Giddings, test cell craftsman assigned to the 52nd Maintenance Squadron. “I didn’t even want to go to the bowling alley.
“After we ordered our food, we heard a crash.” he said. “Not knowing what was going on, and after seeing other people perk up, we discovered that one of the employees at Papa Joe’s restaurant was having a medical emergency.”
Staff Sgt. Jawuan Cook, 52nd MXS aerospace propulsion systems craftsman, was also on the scene. “The cashier was staring down at the floor, and when he looked back up, he looked shell-shocked.
That’s when I knew something was wrong,” he said.
The Airmen rushed behind the counter to assist the man as the other employee called emergency services. Giddings recalled, “We put him on his side to make sure he didn’t choke. He had hit his head pretty hard when he fell, and I didn’t want him to get hurt further.”
Both noncommissioned officers agreed on one thing: they acted instinctively. Cook added, “We didn’t even think about it. I just wanted him to be alright and make sure we didn’t potentially lose a life that day.”
Against the odds, not only do Cook and Giddings both have mothers in medical career fields, but both have family members with a history of seizures. They had both expressed that they believed these experiences helped them handle the situation mentally, and act without thought.
Additionally, both NCOs gave credit to their military training, especially their tactical combat casualty care training. “I wasn’t scared,” Giddings recalled, “He was around potentially dangerous items, like the hot grill, the cooking utensils, and he had already been injured. The idea of my training

crept into the back of my head, and I remember making sure the scene was safe, that nothing else could hurt any of us.”
Cook chimed in, “The TCCC training kind of makes you step back for a second and think about what’s going on, instead of just rushing into what could be dangerous.”
Even after he came to, as emergency services rushed to the scene, the Airmen stayed with the man, keeping him calm and from
getting up to his feet.
The wait wasn’t long, and in under five minutes emergency services had arrived. Giddings and the other Airmen at the scene assisted the man, nearly carrying him, out to the ambulance where they then answered questions about the incident.
“I was very proud of how everyone handled the situation, doing their best to add their support and make sure he was okay,” Cook said, “The last thing I would ever
want is if I’m ever having a medical emergency and everyone is just sitting there watching. That’s the opposite of what we did and I’m very proud of that.”
Thanks to the speedy actions of a handful of maintainers, and the skills of swift emergency personnel, the man made a full recovery and is even back to work at Papa Joe’s restaurant, providing the base with warm breakfasts, sizzling lunches, refreshing fountain drinks and a friendly presence.

A U.S. Air Force EA-37B Compass Call assigned to the 55th Electronic Combat Group at DavisMonthan Air Force Base, Arizona, arrived at Ramstein Air Base, as part of its first stop in the European theater for a scheduled roadshow, Jan. 26.
The aircraft is also slated to visit Spangdahlem AB and RAF Mildenhall, England, marking the platform’s introduction to Airmen, units and NATO Allies in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe area of responsibility.
This is the aircraft’s first appearance in the European theater and builds off of two previ-
ous roadshows in the Indo-Pacific. The visits are intended to enable a smoother transition toward initial operational capability and service across the force as the EC-130H is phased out.
The Compass Call serves as a critical enabler across domains as electromagnetic spectrum operations becomes more critical for achieving desired military effects, such as degrading adversarial communication, navigation and weapons systems and countering adversarial kill chains to enhance joint force survivability.
“As it enters operational service, the airframe will deliver decision dominance across all domains going forward,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ronnie Smith, USAFEAFAFRICA Future Operations
Deputy Division Chief.
The roadshow’s inclusion of multiple installations and units highlights the aircraft’s flexibility to integrate into various mission sets and teams, serving as a key node for joint and coalition operations.
“One of the most important aspects of success in conflict is information superiority,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Tyler Laska, 41st Electronic Combat Squadron EA-37B pilot. “Every moment of hesitation that we can implant into an adversary’s decision-making process increases the survivability of our men and women on the leading edge of every domain.”

When discussing U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa’s international partnership mechanisms, most would likely think of foreign affairs officers or bilateral exercises before the safety office.
But increasingly, the command’s safety professionals have become a key component of tactical consultation and operational independence, quietly supporting partner nation air forces to become safer and more self-reliant.
“The purpose of the safety office is to implement and oversee safety investigations and mishap prevention for U.S. Air Force personnel across Europe and Africa, that’s twenty-five percent of the world’s land mass,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Konrad Trautman, USAFEAFAFRICA Aviation Safety Division Chief. “When we export mission expertise, safety becomes a force multiplier.”
To meet that mission, USAFEAFAFRICA’s Safety Directorate provides training courses, mishapinvestigation assistance, and military-to-military exchanges that focus on air, ground, and weapons safety. These engagements build trust and strengthen coalition operations, enabling partners to conduct missions more independently and with less risk.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Dena McFadden, 449th Air Expeditionary Group flight safety officer, poses for a photo at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Oct. 10, 2025. On Aug. 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Chinese-made Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed into a mountainside near Obuasi, Ghana, killing eight people, including the nation’s Minister of Defense. Following a formal request from the Ghanaian government, McFadden and two other U.S. safety experts deployed within hours to assist local authorities in determining the cause of the accident.
“We’re very integrated with our NATO allies and partners on flight safety,” Trautman said. “If a mishap happens in this area of responsibility, we know the response will be a combined effort with the host nation. Over the last few years, we’ve been actively nurturing our relationships with African countries as well to enhance their capabilities.”
That approach was put to the test in August 2025, when a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter

crashed near Obuasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Eight people, including two of the country’s ministers, tragically lost their lives in the crash: the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology.
Following an official request of the Government of Ghana, two U.S. military officers were dispatched to Accra to advise Ghana’s Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB
Ghana) in coordination with U.S. Embassy Accra and the NCIS Force Protection Detachment. Those U.S. military officers were Capt. Dena McFadden, USAFE safety advisor lead, and Capt. T. Scott Hayes, USAFE safety observer.
“We may not have any ownership or technical data on the Chinese-manufactured Z-9, but we bring years of aviation safety expertise,” McFadden explained.
“Our role was to help guide their
board to yield long-term safety improvements.”
Working alongside AIB Ghana, the USAFE-AFAFRICA safety officers provided insights and facilitated recommendations from U.S. Air Force safety processes to augment and support the Ghanaianled investigation. Working in conjunction, the U.S. officers provided ideas and suggestions, including methods for fact-finding, data protection, and human factors analysis.
While the U.S. Air Force offered critical assistance and expertise in many areas, the Ghanaian officers led the investigation, including critical research into the cockpit voice/flight data recorder, frequently known as the “black box,” which the Ghanaian officers took to the manufacturer for further analysis and assistance.
Despite the complexity of a high-visibility investigation in a multinational environment, safety professionals like McFadden and Hayes and their Ghanaian counterparts worked together to assess the factors that led to the August 2025 crash, resulting into remedial actions that could minimize future deadly mishaps, fostering safer, and therefore stronger, partner forces.
“Safety is universal,” McFadden said. “Every nation learns from loss, but when we share lessons and processes, we prevent the next mishap together.

Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Cydnie Baker 39th Air Base Wing
The 39th Air Base Wing exercised its natural disaster response capabilities as part of Titan Dawn 26-02, Jan. 13-14. The exercise simulated an earthquake impacting the base and surrounding area with conditions similar to the 2023 earthquake in Türkiye, where Incirlik acted as a hub for humanitarian aid in the region.
“Titan Dawn 26-02 was designed to test our wing’s ability to quickly recover the base after a natural disaster and get it back to mission ready” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Kyle Rich, 39th ABW director of operations. “We’re stressing our wing’s ability to maintain command and control in a communications degraded environment, assess and respond to damages to critical infrastructure, as well as respond to a mass casualty event including U.S. and NATO partners.”
For the first time in the base’s recent history Incirlik’s Turkish and Spanish military members were integrated in the planning, coordination and execution of a large-scale wing-level exercise. Members from both countries were integrated into the emergency operations center as well as the mass casualty scenario.
“As the Spanish contingent deployed on an international mission, it’s a great challenge to take part in an exercise carried out mostly by the U.S. Air Force,” said Spanish Army Sargento Primero Marduk Navarro Carmona. “We mainly played the roles of earthquake victims, but also our Medical Spaniard platoon supported with triage tasks. Our participation added the language barrier element, increasing the difficulty in interacting with patients as well as medical teams. The exercise was very complex and despite the challenges, the exercise was well executed by all units.”
Exercises like Titan Dawn deliberately place Airmen in high-stress training

scenarios where skills are tested and refined through practice while working alongside our Turkish and Spanish counterparts. U.S., Turkish and Spanish medical teams worked together to respond to a simulated mass casualty event where they worked hand-inhand providing lifesaving care to over 70 patients. Facing these challenges together fosters professional growth, sharpens tactical execution, and reinforces the teamwork and resilience required in crisis scenarios.
“This Titan Dawn increased casualties from the normal exercise max of 14 to 74, which is the largest number this base has seen in over 10 years,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Amanda Deveaux, 39th MDG

Medical Readiness Flight commander. “This also helped us assess our capabilities and stress our resources to depletion to identify necessary equipment and supplies for future training, exercises, and potential real-world events.”
The exercise replicated real-world conditions by reinforcing mission-relevant training such as validating equipment and supply management as well as managing 24-hour operations under stress and fatigue.
In addition to the mass casualty event, Airmen had to navigate challenges such as verifying accountability with degraded communications, and working through the management of resources such as food and
water. All those challenges were approached not just from a U.S. perspective, but taking the entire base population, including the Turkish, Spanish and Polish military community into account.
“Without testing our operational cohesion with our NATO partners, it’s hard to be ready for any crisis or contingency we will face in the future.” Rich continues. “Our wing’s intent is to build onto this momentum for future exercises by involving our partners in as many wing-level exercises as possible.”

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz honored long-serving employees of the garrison during a ceremony in Baumholder, Dec. 2025. The ceremony recognized individuals who have served between five and 45 years and highlighted their dedication, loyalty, and commitment over many years.
The event took place during a townhall meeting at the Wagon Wheel Theatre on Smith Barracks in Baumholder and brought together leadership, colleagues, and guests to acknowledge the achievements of the awardees. Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, personally presented each awardee with a certificate in honor of their long-standing service. Also attending the ceremony were the Deputy to the Garrison Commander, Paul Hossenlopp, and the Garrison’s Command Sergeant
Major, Randy Rivera, who joined in honoring the employees.
During the ceremony, each awardee was called onto the stage one by one. As they received their certificate, Higgins, Hossenlopp, and Rivera posed for a photo with every honoree, marking the special occasion.
Several employees were acknowledged for their many years of service in different positions across the garrison. Through their daily work and strong sense of commitment, they have supported the mission, contributed to the smooth operation of the installation, maintained high professional standards and helped move the garrison forward, Higgins said.
Among the awardees were Tobias Lang and Daniel Pommer, both firefighters who were recognized for 15 years of service. Both have been involved in the fire service since their youth. After applying several times in Mannheim, they were eventually offered temporary positions. When the Mannheim loca-
tion was later closed, they moved on to another assignment before finally transferring to their current fire station at Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern, where they continue their service today.
Looking back, they described their most memorable moments as those when missions went well, especially during challenging operations. Successful life-saving efforts were highlighted as particularly meaningful experiences. They also emphasized how much they appreciate the high level of respect and recognition firefighters receive in the United States, including invitations to events and strong support from the community.
Speaking about the importance of their job, Lang and Pommer explained that the fire service is deeply rooted in tradition and that, no matter where someone comes from, the fire service always feels like one big family. On receiving the award, both said the honor represents a strong sign of appreciation for their loyalty and commitment
over the years.
Summing up their time in one sentence, both firefighters agreed: “We did everything right.”
In addition to honoring 15 years of service, the ceremony also recognized an exceptional career marked by more than four decades of dedication.
Sigrid Hartenstein was recognized for an impressive 45 years of service. She built her career across several positions, including roles with USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. She began her career by starting an apprenticeship, and because her father had worked with the U.S. Army, she had only positive experiences based on what she had heard about the work. Over the years she has taken on various responsibilities, including preparing military police reports, conducting background checks, and using Clarence to finalize reports. Looking back, she is particularly proud that her workplaces have always been so secure.
Reflecting on changes over
the decades, she noted that many young people are joining the team, even though overall staff numbers have decreased while the workload remains the same. She said she hopes the younger generation will continue to stay and contribute. Speaking about her career, she described it as “the perfect balance between customer service and administration – simply ideal.”
On receiving the award, Hartenstein said she was proud of the honor and summed up her career in one sentence: “It was the best decision to take a job with the U.S. Armed Forces.”
She also offered advice for younger colleagues: “Always try things out to find the perfect place for your skills.”
U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz sets, serves and secures the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater.

The U.S. Space Force and U.S. Southern Command officially marked the activation of Space Forces Southern during a ceremony at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Jan. 21, formalizing the command’s role in integrating space capabilities across the Western Hemisphere.
Although SPACEFOR–SOUTH became operational effective Dec. 1, 2025, the ceremony formally recognized the activation with the assumption of command by Col. Brandon P. Alford, and the digital unveiling of the Space Forces Southern emblem, symbolizing the command’s mission and regional focus.
SPACEFOR–SOUTH serves as the space component to U.S. Southern Command, responsible for integrating space power with joint, interagency and multinational partners to support regional security, deterrence and stability across Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
“This new organization reaffirms our commitment to address local threats of all shapes and sizes, ranging from malign state actors to violent extremist organizations and to transnational criminal organizations,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. “Space Forces Southern will continue to be a force for good in the region, using space to maintain peace and stability, and defend the homeland.”
Saltzman emphasized that space capabilities are not just support elements for the Joint Force, but a fully integrated and critical component in their own right.
“As we clearly saw in recent operations in the SOUTHCOM [area of responsibility], without space, kill chains don’t close, our strategic advantage evaporates, and we can’t complete our joint missions,” Saltzman added.
As the first commander of Space Forces Southern, Alford said the activation reflects the growing operational importance of space to missions conducted daily in the U.S.

Southern Command area of responsibility.
“Today marks the beginning of a future that is more connected, more informed, agile and more united in building together to be more capable,” Alford said. “As the first commander of Space Forces Southern, I accept this responsibility with humility and optimism. I am confident that together we will shape a space domain that reflects our shared values and shared aspirations.
“We are not just standing up a command today,” Alford added. “Together, we are shaping the space domain so that what lies above us strengthens everything we value below.”
A career space professional, Alford brings extensive experience across the enterprise, including operational, instructional and staff assignments supporting missile warning, space control and joint space integration. Prior to assuming command, he served in senior leadership roles aligned with U.S. Southern Command, providing continuity between the command’s initial operational capability and its formal activation.
The ceremony included a digital unveiling of the official Space Forces Southern emblem. The design features the Southern Cross constellation to signify that Space Forces Southern is the space component focused on South America, and a lightning bolt symbolizing the speed and responsiveness of space-enabled support to joint and partner forces throughout the region.
In the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility, space-enabled capabilities support operations across vast distances and complex environments. Guardians provide positioning, navigation and timing; secure satellite communications; and space-enabled awareness supporting counter-illicit trafficking operations, multinational exercises, partner-nation capacity building and crisis response—strengthening regional stability and deterrence.
“The activation of Space Forces Southern affirms a simple and powerful idea: we are one hemisphere, stronger together,” Alford said. “Bound together by geography, values and a shared future above us—connected by
shared challenges and shared opportunity.”
The ceremony was attended by senior leaders including Lt. Gen. Evan L. Pettus, acting commander of U.S. Southern Command; Maj. Gen. David Mineau, commander of Air Forces Southern; and Under Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Lohmeier, underscoring the importance of space integration in support of joint and departmental priorities.
Headquartered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, SPACEFOR–SOUTH will work closely with U.S. Space Command, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Northern Command, the Air National Guard’s State Partnership Program and international partners to enhance interoperability and strengthen space domain awareness throughout the region.
The activation of SPACEFOR–SOUTH marks another significant step in formally establishing space as a warfighting domain critical to joint operations, reinforcing security and stability across the Western Hemisphere.

Soldiers assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, conducted an armored livefire exercise and technology demonstrations during Operation Winter Falcon 26 at the Drawsko Combat Training Center in Oleszno, Poland, Jan. 13.
The event demonstrated how modern military operations rely on integrating multiple systems, including unmanned aerial systems and counter-UAS capabilities, to strengthen defensive capabilities. The demonstration reflected how the United States and its NATO allies are modernizing to
reinforce defenses in Poland and across the alliance.
Polish and U.S. forces fired their M1A2 Abrams tanks side by side on the firing line. This marked the first time Polish forces fired their M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks alongside U.S. forces, demonstrating both the platform’s firepower and the coordination among partner nations. The commander of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, Army Col. Matthew Kelley, emphasized the importance of communication when building relationships to deliver interoperability.
“We train to be ready for anything that might happen in the future,” Kelley said. “There is no way you could do that on your own.”
The commander also spoke about the

importance of training in Poland and the value it brings to his troops.
“The strength of our allies together is how we demonstrate that resolve, that commitment, and you’ve [got to] do that in the place you may have to defend,” he said.
After the live-fire exercise, a static display of UASs featured drones that can provide reconnaissance for ground and armored forces and engage enemy vehicles while the pilot remains in a secure position.
Polish vehicles, such as the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System and the AH-64D Apache helicopter, were displayed alongside U.S. technology systems to counter opposing UAS.
The static display illustrated how both UAS and counter-UAS systems complement
armored platforms such as the Abrams by providing reconnaissance, identifying potential threats at a distance and preventing adversaries from locating friendly forces.
When presented together, the systems demonstrated the growing role of UAS and counter-UAS technologies in reinforcing NATO’s defensive posture along Poland’s eastern region.
Operation Winter Falcon 26 underscored the importance of innovation for NATO’s armed forces in modern military operations. By linking armored elements, such as the Abrams tank, with UAS, U.S. and NATO forces demonstrated how coordinated technologies enhance readiness and strengthen overall defense.

Soldiers with the 557th Medical Company (Area Support) paused training Jan. 19, as one of their own was recognized during a promotion ceremony held in the field.
Capt. Conor L. Lineberger, an Army nurse (66H) assigned to the 557th Medical Company (Area Support), 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 30th Medical Brigade, was promoted during a company field training exercise at Franken Kaserne. His wife, Peyton Lineberger, pinned his new rank during the ceremony.
The promotion took place during the Army Nurse Corps’ 125th anniversary year, which was formally established by law on Feb. 2, 1901. Army nurses have served alongside Soldiers since the nation’s founding, with documented roles dating back to the Continental Army in 1776, as well as service during the Civil War and Spanish-American War.
For Lineberger, the timing and location of the ceremony reflect his view of his role as both a nurse and an officer.
Lineberger said serving in the field alongside Soldiers is central to his approach to leadership and care.
“Being in the field with the unit matters,” Lineberger said. “As a nurse and as a leader, my job is to serve the Soldiers I’m with, wherever that mission takes us.”
Lineberger said the decision to hold the promotion during training was deliberate, intended to recognize the unit while minimizing disruption to the exercise.
“It was a chance to give Soldiers a short break and build esprit de corps,” Lineberger said. “Then it was back to training.”
Peers say Lineberger’s leadership has had a measurable impact since joining the unit.

Maj. John Malone, battalion surgeon for the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, described Lineberger as one of the most motivated officers in the formation, noting his role in strengthening medical training and readiness.
Since arriving, Lineberger has helped develop and execute a structured training plan focused on individual critical medical tasks, coordinating efforts across providers and medics to ensure consistent, recurring instruction.
“He takes initiative and follows
through,” Malone said. “That directly benefits the Soldiers and the unit.”
The promotion marked a personal milestone as well.
Peyton Lineberger said the ceremony represented years of sustained effort and sacrifice, both professionally and personally.
“When you look back on everything it took to get here, this promotion reflects the hard work he’s put in and the people he’s helped along the way,” she said.
Being present for the ceremony mat -
tered more to her than where it took place.
“I didn’t care where it was, as long as I could be there,” Lineberger said.
As the exercise resumed and Soldiers returned to training, the promotion served as a reminder of the Army Nurse Corps’ enduring role in supporting Soldiers in both clinical and operational environments.
For Lineberger, the setting underscored the purpose behind the rank.
“This is where we work,” he said. “This is where we serve.”

The 2026 Team Medical Europe-Africa Strong Medicine Senior Leader Forum, co-hosted by the Defense Health NetworkEurope and Medical Readiness Command, Europe Jan. 21 to 23, brought together military medical leaders representing a widerange of medical organizations spanning the military medical enterprise in support of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command.
Forum participants ranged from commanders and leaders of fixed military medical facilities and operational medical units to senior representatives of the Defense Health Agency, Program Executive Office, Defense Healthcare Management Systems, and Geographic Combatant Commands. The three-day event aimed to operationalize data for medical organizations operating in, and supporting, the USEUCOM and USAFRICOM areas of responsibility.
The gathering of more than 100 senior U.S. military medical leaders engaged in a series of lengthy discussions designed to identify and explore gaps and barriers in medical data and information systems across the spectrum from fixed medical facilities at home station to the furthest point of injury on the battlefield. The forum focused on identifying gaps in data and information systems that support development of the medical layer of a common operating picture and informed military medical leader decision making during competition, crisis, and conflict environments. More importantly, the participants identified potential solutions to gaps and barriers and drafted a collaborative way ahead to address these issues.
“This year’s forum served as Phase 1

of a longer-term exercise we are calling Exercise Decisive Care,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, Commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Director of Defense Health Network Europe.
“We are losing the data war — full stop. However, by fostering this type of collaboration and communication, we have identified issues, developed potential solutions and have established a collaborative way ahead to regain momentum.”

The participation of Pat Flanders, Chief Information Officer & Program Executive Officer for Medical Systems, DHA, and representatives from PEO DHMS were a key part of the discussion during the forum. Brig. Gen. Giraud conveyed his appreciation to Flanders and the PEO DHMS representatives for their support in developing concrete solutions to the gaps and issues identified during the forum.
“We are thankful to have the right
people in the room to come together, share insights, and devise solutions to the challenges we face with respect to data and information management systems in the military medical enterprise,” added Giraud.
During his opening remarks, Giraud shared his vision and leadership philosophy with the assembled leaders and emphasized the importance of developing a shared understanding through teamwork and collaboration.

“My intent is that we continue to effectively plan, prepare, and execute our missions – on a continuum - for competition, crisis, and conflict,” said Giraud. “We will continue to provide highquality healthcare in competition while maintaining readiness to immediately transition through crisis into conflict.”
Throughout the three-day

The 2026 Senior Leader Forum, hosted by Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe, brought together senior military medical leaders from all branches of service across the European theater. The three-day event, running from Jan. 21 to 23, aimed to strengthen the collaborative efforts and operational readiness of U.S. military medical forces in Europe.
forum, participants engaged in a series of lengthy discussions and presentations focusing on various aspects of the military medical enterprise to include improving the understanding of how data and analytics support timely, more informed decision making and capturing clear, actionable insights and sharing them across the larger military medical enterprise.
According to event planners, this forum will serve as a catalyst for long-term, positive change for medical data and information systems across the military medical infrastructure.
“The collaborative spirit fostered during these discussions underscores a shared commitment to excellence, ensuring that our servicemembers and their families
receive the highest quality medical care regardless of where, and in what environment, they serve,” Giraud added. “The bottom line is this – we will win the data war. We have identified issues and drafted potential solutions and established effective partnerships with stakeholders at all levels. These conditions posture us to quickly achieve positive change. We refer
to ourselves as Strong Medicine for a reason and we will continue to set the pace as we enable warfighting and care for our people.”
Event planners indicated that this forum will be followed by Phase 2 of Exercise Decisive Care this Spring where Team MED EURAF will take what was developed here and test the insights in an exercise environment.

Mainz bleibt Mainz
Mainz is not only the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz with its “Landtag” (state parliament) and State Chancellery situated along the banks of the Rhein River. It is also the largest city in the state with a population of 215,000 and can look upon a diverse history.
The city has been historically significant for over 2,000 years with traces of an early Celtic settlement. On their journey conquering northern parts of Europe, the Romans discovered the area and were enchanted by its mild climate and favorable conditions for shipping. They named the settlement Mogontiacum after the Celtic god Mogons and began building a legion camp, the so-called Castrum about 12 B.C.
The civilian population of the small settlement eventually grew and brought with it skilled craftsmen, merchants and wine growers and a large port to carry goods was built directly along the river. The height of the Roman culture lasted for about 200 years until 406 A.D., when Germanic tribes conquered the region. Ruins of the “Römisches Bühnentheater” (stage theater), Roman stones, a Jupiter column, the Isis und Mater Magna-Heiligtum (sanctuary) and a museum for ancient shipping speak of a flourishing Roman culture.
The most prominent edifice in the city is located on the historic market square with a colorful market on weekends. It is said that construction of St. Martin Cathedral began around the year 990 A.D. It has been restored and redesigned on a number of occasions in its over 1,000-year history, but its mainly Romanesque style has remained. The magnificent church has evidenced the crowning of numerous kings and queens and is well worth a visit.
During the High Middle Ages around 1300, the city was called “Goldenes Mainz” and had about 20,000 – 25,000 inhabitants thanks to its flourishing commerce. A century later in 1450 it lost its city rights and was turned into an electoral residence

town of little political significance. One of the most prominent characters of the time was Johannes Gutenberg who invented the printing press, mass printed the Luther Bible and thus supported the spread of the Protestant Reformation. A replica of the original press can be visited at the Gutenberg Museum, and the university is also named after him.
After he was crowned as “Emperor of the French” in 1804, Napoleon I visited Mainz for the first time, immediately fell in love with the charming city and accounted “Mayence” as one of the 36 most important cities in France, pronouncing it the capital of the Département du Mont-Tonnerre (now Donnersberg). He and his wife enjoyed staying in the lovely city along the river and always resided in the “Deutschhaus” (now the seat of the parliament). The “Grand Rue Napoleon” was built for parades and exists as “Ludwigsstrasse” today. He also had a 600-kilometer-long road built that led from Paris to Mainz, commonly referred to as “Kaiserstrasse” (emperor’s road, now L395/401), which leads through Landstuhl, Kaiserslautern and nearby villages. In addition, his majesty donated the grand bell in
the cathedral marked with the inscription “Napoleon the Great.” Mainz is also known for its “Fastnacht” (carnival) events and a fountain with a multitude of comical figures is located near the cathedral. The Fastnacht slogan is “Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht!” (Mainz remains Mainz as it sings and laughs). The Fastnachtsmuseum (carnival museum) and the Landesmuseum (state museum) display artefacts and historical documentation about the city and surroundings.
The city also hosts one of the largest Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) parades, taking place this year on Feb. 16, which happens to coincide with Presidents’ Day. It’s a fantastic chance to dive into Germany’s vibrant Fastnacht season.
Other places of interest include the old town with semi-timbered buildings, quaint cafés on cobble stone roads, cozy small wine bars and the promenade along the river. There is a castle, Heiliggeist church was turned into a restaurant with a beer garden and the state parliament building overlooks the river promenade. A relaxing river boat ride, or a trip over the bridge to Hessen’s capital Wiesbaden may round off your visit.
The city is located precisely on the coordinates 50° 0’ 0.0” N,8° 16’ 16.16” E, very favorable for winemaking, and marked with a stone inscription opposite of the Staatstheater. Mainz is officially one of the seven wine capitals of the world and is situated in the heart of the Rheinhessen viticulture region. The Kupferberg Museum on a hill with the same name, displays the production of sparkling wines since the mid-1850s and is partially situated in underground cellars said to have been established by the Romans.
Don’t miss out on the “Mainzelmännchen” on pedestrian crosswalk lights. The cute comic figures were created in 1963 when the ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, the second national television channel), opened in Mainz-Lerchenberg and short sequences with the adorable characters appear between commercials on German television. A Mainzelbahn (streetcar) decorated with the figures was established in 2016 that takes commuters from Mainz-Lerchenberg directly to the city center.

stress,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Keshia Brown, 86th Medical Group primary care flight commander. “We want them to be comfortable making decisions under pressure.”
Participants operated simultaneously across initial injury locations, emergency rooms, ground surgical teams, intensive care units and medical surgical wards. Mock patients were moved through the system under critical lifethreatening timelines, forcing teams to make fast-paced life or death decisions while coordinating across specialities and service branches.
The training focused on assessing patient injuries to prioritize care, determining how and who to treat first. Service members practiced life-saving trauma procedures to stabilize personnel in an environment where resources and time may be limited, and giving service members access to medical training that’s usually only available in the United States.
“We don’t get a lot of opportunities to train overseas,” said Senior Airman Shannon Fleming, 86th Medical Group medical technician. “Usually we have to travel to the states for something of this scale and it's a really good experience that we don’t get exposed to over here as medics.”
Service members trained sideby-side introducing participants to new styles of communication and methodology of medical procedures used by sister-service branches.
“The benefit of joint interoperability is that we get to learn from each
other,” Brown said. “Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines all bring different experiences, but we’re all medics with the same mission.”
The exercise also simulated drone attacks to simulate modern day threats joint forces may face in an ever-changing battlefield climate. These conditions reinforced the need to balance patient care with situational awareness to yield life-saving treatment in austere environments.
“Timing is imperative,” Brown said. “Good decision making at the right moment can save lives.”
Getting SABR to simulate realworld situations was vital for the newer medics to hone in on skills that are matters of life and death.
Cadre helped breathe life into the training-dummies with intense screaming, feigned cries for help and commanding newer medics to move faster, making the training more authentic.
“SABR gives newer Airmen and medics exposure to how chaotic trauma situations can be and what it's like to work alongside critical care nurses, physicians and joint partners,” Fleming said.
Exercises like SABR sharpen readiness and interconnectivity throughout all branches of service showcasing the significance of familiarizing medics with realworld scenarios while boosting teamwork amongst service members.
“We don’t know what the next conflict will look like," Brown said. “Training like this ensures our medics are prepared to respond when it matters.”

Two Airmen from the World Class Athlete Program will represent Team USA and the Air Force at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games in Italy next month.
Staff Sgt. Kelly Curtis is set to compete in skeleton, while Senior Airman Jasmine Jones will compete in bobsleigh.
Both athletes are part of Department of the Air Force WCAP, which is managed by the Air Force Services Center. The program allows elite Airmen athletes to train and compete in national and international sports competitions with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Olympic Games.
“This accomplishment deserves more than just congratulations. Olympians, you represent the pinnacle of athleticism and the warrior mindset that defines our Air Force,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Lohmeier. “We are so proud to have you represent the Air Force and the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Your performance on the world stage demonstrates a critical link between physical fitness, commitment to excellence and military readiness. With all of our support: go fight, go win, go Air Force!”
Curtis, who competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, trains at Aviano Air Base, Italy. Jones, competing in her first Olympic games, trains in Lake Placid, New York.
WCAP has seen Olympic qualifiers double since a recruiting strategy revision in 2021 and this is the program’s first ever back-to-back Winter Olympic selection.
“The Air Force Services Center team that supports the World Class Athlete Program is thrilled to see these Airmen qualify as Winter Olympians,” said Col. E. Jonelle Eychner, Commander, AFSVC. “We invest significant time and effort ensuring their foundational needs are met, allowing them to focus on their sport, compete with confidence, and proudly represent the Air Force on the global stage.”

PASSAU from Page 1
rocking downtown. It’s also a stone’s throw from Austria and a short drive to Czechia, which makes it a perfect stop for travelers heading east.
Shaped by rivers
Passau has been inhabited for millennia. Celts settled here thousands of years ago, and the Romans made it theirs, too. This ancient love for Passau’s location is not surprising, considering that the city sits at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers.
For modern travelers, this confluence is fantastic, because it offers natural beauty, culture, history, education and entertainment. There are also chances to get up close and personal with the water. Not surprisingly, boat tours are plentiful, and really well done. There are also loads of riverside walks, which offer peace, quiet (sometimes), and lovely views (almost always). The famous Schaibling Tower is a popular destination on the Dreiflüsseeck (three-river confluence) peninsula.
The peninsula itself is awesome. A sprawling, wonderful pedestrian zone – loaded with shops, restaurants, bars, and more – covers most of it. Naturally, there is a feeling of perpetual positive energy in downtown Passau. It’s as if the ceaseless motion of the three rivers affects all who encounter them.
A fortress worth exploring
The mighty Fortress Veste Oberhaus is located just across the Danube from the Dreiflüsseeck. More than 800 years old, the Veste Oberhaus is one of the best-preserved hilltop castles in Europe.
It also offers the best views in Passau, and the best views of Passau. Once inside, visitors can enjoy the fascinating Oberhausmuseum, which provides insights into the east-west cultural mix that defines Passau. Kids (and lots of adults, too) will love the antique fire truck exhibit, the suits of armor, the crowns, and the jewels. They’ll love exploring the castle even more. Visitors have a lot of leeway to look around once inside.
One cathedral, one organ, 17,974 pipes
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is probably

Passau’s most-visited landmark. For good reason, too: the place is incredible. Located in the heart of the pedestrian zone, its green bulb domes are the defining feature of Passau’s cityscape, and the interior is gilded and massive. Even for veteran European church tourists, St. Stephen’s is impressive. It also lays claim to the largest organ in the world, with nearly 18,000 pipes (for comparison, Paris’ famous Cathedral de Notre Dame “only” has 8,000 pipes). Accordingly, catching an organ concert is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Wander-ful Passau
Mostly, Passau is a magnificent place to wander. After seeing St. Stephen’s, visitors can relax in the adjacent Residenzplatz and admire the outstanding Wittelsbach Fountain. Not far away is the Höllgasse, with the unexpectedly colorful (and beautiful) Art Alley, where visitors can find dozens of artists. All around, there are places to shop, eat, drink, and explore.
And, once you’ve grown weary, there are always riverside benches. You’ll never want for a place to relax and watch the world drift past in Passau.
Getting there
By car, Passau is just over 5 hours from Kaiserslautern, just under 5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
