The 86th Airlift Wing command team hosted an all call at the Hercules Theater, Jan. 14 to discuss the wing’s strategic guidance and priorities.

Brig. Gen. Adrienne L. Williams, 86th AW commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Clifford L. Lawton, 86th AW command chief, outlined how the new guidance will support operational priorities.

“Chief and I figure there is no better way than to start the year by grounding ourselves in who we are, what we do and how we project power, how we create community and how we deliver victory together,” Williams said.

The all call enabled leadership to emphasize the importance of readiness and ensured consistency regarding expectations across the wing, reaffirming the 86th AW’s critical role in projecting power and executing global airlift operations throughout the theater.

“At the end of the day, we are in the business of war-fighting, but more importantly, warwinning.” Lawton said. “Whether that’s operational success, team

success, or individual success. Our ultimate goal is victory, it’s our north star and it's how we ensure peace through strength.”

Building off these priorities, the 86th AW command team reinforced that the expectation of readiness and discipline remain integral to victory and lethality.

“Our priorities are readiness, Airmen and relationships,”

Lawton said. “Our strategic guidance provides us with a shared understanding, a sense of purpose, mission command, a compass for operational success, a culture of mission excellence and meaningful connections.”

The all call highlighted how the 86th AW stays ahead of emerging threats through strong relationships, trust and mission readiness.

“We project power because we stay ready,” Williams said. “We stay ready because we refuse to lower our standards. 2026 is about staying ahead of the threat, staying lethal, staying disciplined, but most importantly, this wing will be ready to fight and win.”

By connecting the Air Force’s strategic priorities to the 86th AW’s mission as the premier power projection platform, the all call served as a way for leader-

ship to underscore the value each individual Airman contributes to their respective unit.

“This wing is built for moments that matter,” Williams said. “Ready when called, united in purpose, relentless in execution. We don’t respond to history, we shape it. You, capital A, Airmen of the Global Gateway, you shape it. When our nation calls and this wing answers with speed, with precision and with victory. Chief and I couldn’t be prouder to serve alongside you.”

human resource team, to even our manager’s flight level to ensure that we could take care of those children,” said Sara Thompson, 86th FSS family child care and child development center program manager.

The Ramstein facility centralized the infant rooms to one location and increased from two rooms to three. The expanded space allows the child and youth programs team to increase care availability while maintaining safety standards and staffing ratios.

During the childcare facility closure, Amber Shaw, the Ramstein CDC civilian director, said the pause created an opportunity for reflection, improvement and renewed focus on improving the workplace culture for their staff. Looking through the lens with a fresh set of eyes helped hone in on boosting morale within the staff through fun activities and renewed appreciation for their work.

“We focused on support and caregiving for our employees,” Shaw said. “Our jobs are demanding, but our caregivers love what

they do, and that passion shows in the care they provide to children and families.”

Child and youth programs provide care for children ranging six weeks to 18-years-old, supporting parents whose schedules demand reliability and consistency. By rehabilitating the facility, child and youth programs aim to ensure Airmen and their families can report to duty knowing their children are in a safe and supportive environment.

For leaders, the milestone represents more than a building reopening, it reflects the strength of the Ramstein community.

“Our mission is to provide high quality childcare to as many families as possible,” Shaw said. “This reopening shows that when we work together, we can continue to build programs that support both families and readiness.”

THE HOUSING HYPE

A guide to living in Military Family Housing

By following a few simple guidelines, you can enjoy your home to the fullest while contributing to a vibrant and wellmaintained community.

Caring for Your Home

German homes differ from those in the U.S., mainly that they feature cinderblock walls which require special care like masonry anchors when hanging decorations. Avoid placing nails or screws in line with electrical outlets.

The homes are built airtight, so it is important to ensure proper ventilation by opening windows twice (2x) daily for 20 minutes to prevent mold buildup so it’s important to ventilate properly.

Keeping Your Surroundings Beautiful

Residents play a key role in maintaining curb appeal. This includes mowing, edging, weeding and watering the area within 50 yards of your home. Trees within reach should be trimmed and shrubs kept under six (6) feet tall.

Parking

Townhouse residents have a garage and driveway and should utilize these areas for parking vehicles. Stairwell residents are assigned one (1) parking space per home. Additional vehicles should be parked in designated areas, and non-operational vehicles must be stored properly or taken to the vehicle recycling center.

Essential Services and Utilities

TKS provides internet service with preinstalled modems—please do not remove or pack this equipment when moving out.

Waste disposal is straightforward with designated bins and bags. Large and/ or hazardous items should be taken to the nearest recycling centers on Pulaski Barracks and Ramstein Air Base.

Pet-Friendly Living

You may have up to three (3) pets with a combined weight of 150 pounds unless otherwise approved. Some dog breeds are restricted, so be sure to check regulations. Always leash your pets when outdoors and clean up after them. Report any petrelated incidents, including bites, to 86 SFS (DSN 480-2050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060) immediately.

Fire Safety & Household Guidelines

Preventing fires is simple; never leave

cooking or candles unattended and keep flammable items away from stove areas. Housing personnel may enter in emergencies or within 24 hours for an inspection.

Restrictions

Smoking is prohibited in all units, including balconies and hallways. Other restricted items include satellite dishes, large pools, external storage sheds, and unapproved flags.

Townhouse residents may display one (1) properly mounted U.S. flag.

Respecting Quiet Hours

Germany observes quiet hours from 2200 (10 PM) to 0600 (6 AM) and 1300 (1 PM) to 1500 (3 PM) Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sundays/ German holidays. Please keep noise levels in check, including music and pets. Persistent disturbances should be reported to 86 SFS (DSN 480-2050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060).

Vacation or TDYs exceeding seven days

If you are away for more than seven (7) days, plan for security, ventilation, lawn care and snow removal. Notify the KMC Housing Office, and, if you live in a stairwell, inform your building leader with your caretaker’s contact details.

Operating a Home Business

Please contact the KMC Housing Office for guidance. You must get approval from Housing and obtain the necessary licenses.

Financial Responsibility/Renter’s Insurance

Residents are financially responsible for damage due to negligence. Renter’s insurance is highly recommended. Liability and pet insurance can also prevent costly claims.

Maintenance/Self-help

For anything breaking due to normal wear and tear, you may use the self-help stores or call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-463-9510. This free service helps keep your home in good condition.

By following these guidelines, you help create a safe, enjoyable, and wellmaintained community for yourself, your neighbors, and future residents.

Newly promoted captain administers oath to fellow officer at 30 Medical Brigade promotion ceremony

Two officers of the 30th Medical Brigade marked career milestones during a promotion ceremony at the Maintenance Bay in Resolute Park on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Jan. 9, as one newly promoted leader immediately assumed responsibility in the same event.

Capt. Bethany Blankenship, executive officer for the 512th Field Hospital Center, was promoted to captain by Peyton Lineberger and 1st Lt. Marina Heitmann. Shortly

after the pin-on, Blankenship administered the oath of office to 1st Lt. Christian Dover, executive officer for the 167th Medical Detachment.

Dover was promoted by his wife, Sarah, during the ceremony.

The sequence underscored a defining aspect of Army leadership: advancement in rank is accompanied by immediate responsibility. One officer advanced. Another accepted greater duty. Both did so in the same ceremony.

The 512th Field Hospital Center and the 167th Medical Detachment are assigned to the 30th Medical

Brigade, a subordinate unit of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, which enables medical support and sustainment operations across U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The 512th Field Hospital Center provides command and control for subordinate medical units and supports large-scale medical operations, while the 167th Medical Detachment delivers specialized medical capability that contributes to patient care and readiness. Together, the units support the 21st TSC’s mission to sustain the force and maintain medical readiness across the theater.

721 MSS tests continuity of operations during Exercise Agile Swarm

1st Lt. Nathan Roe 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing

The 721st Mobility Support Squadron executed EXERCISE AGILE SWARM at Ramstein Air Base, on Nov. 5, 2025, testing their ability to relocate and reestablish critical en route support operations in response to area threats that compromise their primary operating location.

The 721st MSS delivers comprehensive and enduring en route support for strategic air mobility aircraft and operations through superior command and control, communications, intelligence, tactics, aeromedical evacuation, and en route aircraft security. Even short delays in operations can have a significant impact on strategic mission timelines.

“We deal with a lot of aeromedical evacuations, theater ballistic defense systems, and Presidential support; anything headed eastbound for EUCOM, AFRICOM, or CENTCOM almost exclusively comes through Ramstein to get into theater,” said Tech. Sgt. Elbert Foreman, 721st MSS NCOIC of console operations.

Due to the variety of support functions that the 721st MSS provides, relocating operations quickly is a significant undertaking. The MSS also relocates critical communication equipment and sensitive aircrew equipment, such as their weapons and COMSEC. These items have specific storage and transportation requirements, which can involve additional coordination with other host base units.

While physically relocating the Air Mobility Control Center, the 721st MSS needed to ensure that all of their members were safe and accounted for all while testing the unit’s ability to operate their Air Mobility Team equipment, which can be utilized as a tertiary AMCC.

“We were able to get 100 percent accountability and relocate operations faster than we ever have in the past three SWARM series exercises,” said Lt. Col. Bradley Breedlove, 721st MSS director of operations. In addition to improving their time to complete accountability, the 721st MSS was able to showcase current capabilities while also highlighting areas for improvement

in their ability to react to threats without impacting mission execution.

“Overall, we met the mark,” said Breedlove. “Our teams made good decisions, got away from the threat, and were able to get command and control up and running while posturing for aircrew and aeromedical evacuation support. There’s always room for improvement, but it was a

very successful exercise.”

With plans to continue iterations of the event and integrate into the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing-level Nodal Lightning Exercise series, Agile Swarm represents a persistent commitment to readiness within the 721st MSS, guaranteeing mission execution even in contested environments.

721 AMXS adds Commercial Concurrent Servicing to their toolbelt

Members of the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron have recently added Commercial Concurrent Servicing to a growing list of unique specializations required to support rapid global mobility across the en-route system.

The 721st AMXS along with the 721st Aerial Port Squadron support a heavy mission rate with more than 50 aircraft coming through Ramstein Air Base every day. Completing port and maintenance actions is even more com-

plicated with several daily flights being civilian aircraft and not the C-5M Super Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft they are most often trained on. Despite these challenges, the 721st AMXS and 721st APS have implemented a way to minimize ground time for these civilian aircraft, avoiding a snowball effect where crews lose duty hours, resulting in missed time slots, or even delaying mission departure anywhere from a few hours to overnight.

Concurrent Servicing allows aircraft refueling to be completed simultaneously with any number of necessary port activities, a practice which enhances the ability of the 721st AMXS and 721st APS to process personnel and cargo more efficiently.

“We are able to load or download cargo, do lavatory servicing, refill potable water, or anything else that the APS needs to do while refueling, even with passengers onboard,” said Staff Sgt. Ty Henderson, a 721st AMXS fuel systems craftsman.

However, there are risks associated with concurrent servicing due to the increased activity and movement around the aircraft during refueling operations. But diligent training implementation has been effective in mitigating these risks.

“Since we’re introducing aircraft fuel, there is a increased risk of injury, aircraft damage or mishaps as well as increased risk of fuel spill, fire and explosion due to electrostatic hazards.” Said Maj Alexander Barden, 721st AMXS director of operations, “We coordinate with the fire department as well to be on standby to respond.”

To minimize this risk, a concurrent servicing supervisor is present while overseeing all operations. This responsibility is specifically monitoring the Fuel Servicing Safety Zone, an area within 50 feet of a pressurized fuel truck.

The concurrent servicing supervisor closely monitors all operations as well as control the entry and exit of all personnel, equipment, and vehicles into the FSSZ.

“If I see something outside our risk tolerance or if anybody else does, I am the final say on if the refueling continues or if we pause until the area is clear,” said Henderson.

This level of responsibility requires deliberate training and the 721st AMXS has found a training solution that helped get the program off the ground quickly.

“Training and certification for someone to become a CSS requires at least one year of airframe experience as well as study and review of the applicable tech data, familiarization with working with Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant personnel and other operations during CS,” said Barden. “What makes commercial CS unique is that despite none of our maintainers having airframe experience, we’ve been able to step in fairly quickly

to familiarize ourselves with commercial aircraft operations to cut down ground time immensely.”

While implementing the commercial CS program back in October, the 721st AMXS and 721st APS aimed to standardize the process and implement best practices from other installations but quickly discovered that it is an uncommon practice.

“As we were standing up the capability, we reached out to other installations and commercial airports and found that it isn’t something actually done for the most part,” said Barden. “In other words, we’re unique in both the en-route and the Department of the Air Force at large in that we actually do it.”

As the program continues, the 721st AMXS looks to expand the number of concurrent servicing supervisors to grow this capability that they provide in support of the larger Rapid Global Mobility mission.

Some of the individuals who were recognized at the annual Naval Station Rota Chief Petty Officer Pinning Ceremony looked a little different, with gold anchors and a khaki cap crowning an otherwise blue uniform. On Sept. 16, 2025, three of the twenty CPOs recognized during the 2025 NAVSTA Rota CPO Training and Initiation Seasons were Airmen from the 521st Air Mobility Operations Group and 725th Air Mobility Squadron.

For more than a decade, newly selected U.S. Air Force Master Sergeants have been nominated by local Air Force leadership to participate alongside their U.S. Navy partners. Each member goes through an extensive vetting process by their leadership and the Airmen who were previously accepted into the Chief’s Mess.

“I didn’t even know he was going to show up in his Khakis, and then being covered with the same hat that he was wearing meant the world to me,” continued King.

In addition to the personal pride that comes from finishing Chief’s Season, these Airmen help deepen the connections between NAVSTA Rota and the 521st AMOG and 725th AMS, bolstering their ability to enable Rapid Global Mobility for Air Force missions transiting Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia.

“We want to make sure our folks are participating for the right reasons,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jeffery Ritenour, 725th AMS senior enlisted leader. “This isn’t about being a part of a cool kids club; this is a serious test of commitment and dedication that connects us more closely to the base.”

Ohio native finds purpose through an unexpected Army calling

Public Health Command Europe noncommissioned officer is reflecting on a career he never expected to pursue, one that now allows him to mentor soldiers, support military families and give back to the communities he calls home.

When Staff Sergeant Andrew Smith walked into a recruiter’s office more than a decade ago, he imagined wearing a different uniform, repairing helicopters from the flight line as an Army Reserve aircraft mechanic. Instead, he walked out with an unexpected career and a trajectory that continues to shape him, his soldiers and the communities he serves today.

Smith, an Ohio native and former education major, is now a 68R Veterinary Food Inspection Specialist assigned to Public Health Command Europe. Thirteen years into his Army career, the once-undecided college graduate has transformed uncertainty into purpose, proving that the Army has endless opportunities for those willing to pursue them.

Smith’s path was not straightforward.

After graduating from Wright State University with a degree in teaching, the future NCO found himself at a crossroads.

“I enjoyed teaching, but I didn’t quite know what came next,” he says. A nudge from his then-girlfriend, now wife, Kayla,

helped him decide. “We agreed that joining the Army was the best option for our family for a successful future.”

Smith hoped to enlist as a helicopter repair technician, but an eyesight disqualification forced him to rethink his plans.

Determined to serve and eager for the stability and student loan repayment opportunities the Army offered, he selected active duty and

fulfilling and family friendly, something he values deeply.

“Being a veterinary food inspector is a great family job,” he said. “Most days I’m home in the early evening and weekends are usually my family and mine. That time matters.”

Smith speaks openly about the security and structure the Army provides. Insurance, pay stability and educational offerings have shaped his outlook, not only as a soldier, but as a husband and father.

“I consider myself lucky but we all bring sacrifices,” Smith said. “I don’t like that my children don’t grow up close to their immediate family but we are fortunate to get to know different cultures and see the world.”

Smith is committed to finishing his 20 years of service, a milestone that will allow him to retire while still young. Afterward, he plans to stay within the military community and give back.

accepted a job he knew little about: veterinary food inspection.

“It wasn’t what I expected to do,” Smith said. “But it turned out to be what I didn’t know I wanted.”

Smith embraced the profession, beginning his career in South Korea and later deploying his skills across the globe. Today marks his second tour with Public Health Command Europe, where he used to serve in the Biological Analysis Division and now in the S3 Operations section. As the Schools and Operations NCO, he manages training, professional development and operational requirements for more than 150 soldiers.

“It’s a big responsibility, but it’s also rewarding,” Smith said. “I get to help soldiers advance their careers, build their confidence and take advantage of the same opportunities I’ve been given.”

The job, he says, has been professionally

That passion is already visible in his offduty life. Smith volunteers wherever he is stationed, looking for ways to link his Army skills with community needs, whether this is in form of coaching his children’s softball team, teaching proper handwashing or food safety.

Most recently, he spent time at a Child Development Center, volunteering in a group of toddlers. Smith introduced them to protective gear, masks, gloves and military equipment, blending safety education with handson curiosity, as part of a curriculum on clothing.

“Kids absorb everything,” he said. “If I can spark interest or make them feel brave or excited, then I’m doing something worthwhile.” Whether in a classroom, an operations section or a laboratory, Smith brings the same steady focus: showing up, improving himself and helping others succeed.

Thirteen years ago, he was unsure what came next. Today, Smith shows that a single decision and an open mind can change the course of a life, a family and a community.

MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopters complete first operational ICBM convoy security mission

A U.S. Air Force MH139A Grey Wolf assigned to the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducts its first operational mission at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, Jan. 8. The

the Vietnamera UH1N Huey and represented a key step in modernizing security for the nation’s landbased nuclear deterrent.

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, MONT. — Two MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters assigned to the 40th Helicopter Squadron conducted their first operational Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile convoy Jan. 8, marking an important milestone in the modernization of Air Force Global Strike Command’s nuclear security operations.

The MH-139s shepherded a column of missile maintenance and armored security vehicles to and from a launch facility located more than 100 miles east of Malmstrom Air Force Base without needing to refuel during the six-hour movement, demonstrating the superior capabilities of AFGSC’s newest helicopter as the Air Force prepares to retire the UH-1N Huey after more than five decades of service.

“Executing our first convoy mission with two MH-139s marks a significant step forward in strengthening our missile security operations,” said Maj. Gen. Stacy Huser, 20th Air Force commander.

“The MH-139 allows us to continue supporting our ICBM enterprise for decades to come with increased speed, range and lift.”

Speed and reach are demanded specifically due to the more than 100 launch facilities dispersed across Malmstrom AFB’s 13,800-square-mile area of responsibility that spans diverse topography of prairies, plains and mountain ranges.

Not only is the MH-139 approximately 50 percent faster than the UH-1N and can arrive on-site several minutes sooner — armed and with twice as many troops on board — it also has enhanced defensive systems and is built to support missile field security missions across vast and austere terrain.

The recent convoy escort mission gained valuable operational experience for AFGSC as 20th AF progresses toward initial operational capability of its Grey Wolf fleet.

“I am incredibly proud of our Airmen who made this success possible,” said Col. Bryant Bevan, 582nd Helicopter Group commander. “This mission provided us a multitude of lessons learned, which we will utilize as we continue to work toward accomplishing IOC for the MH-139.”

The MH-139’s implementation into Air Force operations has been an ongoing program for the last several years.

Boeing delivered the first MH-139A to the United States Air Force on Dec. 19, 2019, at Duke Field, Florida. This began combined developmental testing for the UH-1N replacement program.

Malmstrom AFB then hosted a welcome ceremony for the MH-139A on March 9, 2024.

The 550th Helicopter Squadron at Malstrom AFB began MH-139 conversion training the following month.

The first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight in support of nuclear security operations was on Jan. 29, 2025.

The MH-139 doesn’t just replace an airframe; it directly upgrades how quickly security forces can mass combat power where it’s needed. It has been evaluated specifically for nuclear security tasks that mirror Malmstrom AFB’s real-world demands: convoy support and emergency response, including launch facility recapture and recovery scenarios that measure how quickly crews can go from idle to airborne.

“Our ICBM mission is the foundation of strategic deterrence, and it demands absolute reliability, security, and readiness,” said Col. Daniel Voorhies, 341st Missile

Wing commander. “The MH-139 strengthens nuclear surety by giving our Airmen a more capable platform to protect our forces as they carry out the nation’s most imperative mission, 24/7/365.”

The first operational use of the MH-139 that occurred on Jan. 8 was described by Malmstrom AFB’s Striker Airmen as both historic and reassuring.

“The performance of the helicopter was impressive,” said Maj. Nicholas Smith, 40th HS MH-139 pilot. “This test proved that the Grey Wolf can bring all the required firepower necessary to defend our nation’s nuclear force in a real scenario.”

Smith said the helicopter’s improved Forward Looking Infrared and its avionics systems enhanced his crew’s situational awareness and their ability to sup-

port the ground force commander.

“The MH-139 integrated seamlessly and provided an immediate increase in helicopter support capabilities,” Smith said.

Malmstrom AFB’s mission remains shaped by its northerntiered reality as its remoteness and distance defines the fight today — security forces must be able to respond, reinforce and sustain operations far from the main installation, often with little margin for delay.

“The transition from the UH-1N Huey to the MH-139A Grey Wolf is one of the first visible steps toward the next era of the Global Strike mission, eventually leading to the full mission integration with Sentinel,” said Tech. Sgt. Samuel Earney, 341st Missile Security Operations Squadron Tactical Response Force flight sergeant.

“The transition from the battletested Huey to the high-tech Grey Wolf has been bittersweet, but given the increased capabilities of the new helicopter, it makes sense as to why the Air Force chose to make the move.”

Convoy Response Force members working on the ground below the helicopter also appreciated the presence of Grey Wolf helicopters during the movement.

“I think the MH-139 being on a mission is a very good addition to convoys due to the fact that it has a faster top speed,” said Senior Airman Nicholas Scaramucci, 341st MSOS convoy team leader.

“I felt honored to be a part of it,” said Senior Airman Dwight Panton, 341st MSOS convoy team leader. “It was one of those experiences where training and real-world application finally came together.”

Quiz time: How well do you know German license plates?

Germany has a very special method of issuing license plates depending on where you live. Unlike in the United States, where plates are issued according to states with different colors or designs. In Germany all plates are designed with black letters on a white background, they have a D (Deutschland) and the European Union symbol in a blue rectangle on the left. Generally speaking, the larger a city, the shorter the abbreviation. For example, a car registered in Augsburg receives an A as the first letter, then a hyphen with one or two letters and a row of one to four digits.

It is also possible to register your car with a “wish plate” using a desired letter combination or your initials and a particular number you choose, such as a birthdate. A car registered as A-AB-123 could, but must not, be attributed to a person with the initials AB born on March 12.

The second set of combinations is for somewhat smaller cities, such as Kaiserslautern with KL, which is well familiar in the area. As some letters are already taken, it might be necessary to assign two letters for a large city, such as HH, which stands for Hansestadt Hamburg. And, there are a few combinations used for special purposes, such as X for NATO vehicles or CD (Corps Diplomatique) for diplomats. Any plate with an E at the end, such as KL-EC-

456E, means that this is an electric car. My personal favorite I spotted once was GI-NA 14!

Any smaller cities or even regions may be assigned a combination of three letters, an example of a town nearby is Homburg with HOM. There are also special combinations for official vehicles, such as NRW for police or leading politicians in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Test your knowledge, or make it a challenge of finding out, how many plate combinations you know by taking our License Plate Quiz:

ABC IN KMC: Queidersbach

Queidersbach:

Small in size, big in vision

This year, the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marked by festivities throughout the nation.

Yet, imagine a small community near Kaiserslautern that can trace its history back four times as far as this momentous event. Queidersbach will mark its 1050th anniversary in 2026 under the motto “Experience History — Shape the Future,” an extensive program of events is planned to celebrate the occasion.

The small village of Queidersbach with a population of 2,840, and additionally about 450 Americans and NATO members, is located about 10 kilometers southwest of Kaiserslautern. It is nestled in a natural meadow valley along the western edge of the Palatinate Forest, where the landscape transitions into the Sickingen Heights. Nearly two-thirds of its 1,500-hectare territory is forested. Queidersbach also encompasses the localities of Forsthaus Stempelberg, Schweinstal, and Zuckerhof.

An eponymous creek, commonly referred to as Steinalb, flows through Queidersbach. Neighboring communities are Bann, Kaiserslautern, Krickenbach, Linden, Weselberg and Obernheim-Kirchenarnbach.

Experiencing history

The community was first recorded in 976, when Emperor Otto II granted his vassal Biso, the Bishop of Paderborn, land along the Queidersbach.

Until the late 18th century, the village of Queidersbach belonged to the Grand Court of the Rule of Landstuhl, governed by the barons of Sickingen-Hohenburg. In 1794, during the First Coalition War, the left bank of the Rhine came under occupation.

From 1798 to 1814, during the period when the Palatinate belonged first to the French Republic and later to the Napoleonic Empire, Queidersbach was incorporated into the canton of Landstuhl within the Department of Donnersberg. At that time, it served as the seat of a Mairie that also included the village of Linden.

Following the agreements of the Congress of Vienna, the region briefly passed to Austria in June 1815 before being ceded to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 under the Treaty of Munich. Under Bavarian rule, Queidersbach became part of the Landeskommissariat Homburg in the Rhine District, which was reorganized into a district office in 1862.

From 1929 to 1939, Queidersbach belonged to the district office of Kaiserslautern. Since 1939, the community has been a part of the district of Kaiserslautern. After the Second World War, Trippstadt was within the French occupation zone of the then newly formed state of

Rhineland-Palatinate and the administrative district of Pfalz. In 1972 Queidersbach was incorporated into the newly created collective municipality of KaiserslauternSüd during the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform. This municipality subsequently merged with Landstuhl in July 2019.

The excitement is clearly visible in the faces of local mayor Harald Vierling and his wife Anita when they talk about the current year and Queidersbach’s 1050th anniversary. Preparations for this year-long major event are already in full swing.

A committed team — composed of municipal council members and enthusiastic volunteers — has joined forces to craft a diverse and lively festival year. The people of Queidersbach have already shown their talent for hosting remarkable celebrations: even the 1000-year anniversary, held five decades ago, still lives on as a splendid and unforgettable event in the memories of many residents.

Shaping the future

The festive opening was marked by the New Year’s reception on Jan. 11. In addition to performances by the fanfare band and the men’s choir, the Star Singers paraded through the hall. Just a few days later, the traditional grand session returned, kicking off the carnival season punctually at 8:11 PM.

When spring arrives, activities will continue in a sporty and sociable manner. In March, the community invites people to a guided hike of around twelve kilometers along the culturally and historically significant Walkmühltal hiking trail, with two refreshment stations providing the food and drinks. The delightful month of May will be welcomed with a three-day celebration. From May 1 to 3, visitors can expect a weekend full of music and dance, and fun and activities for the whole family.

Big celebrations in the summer Summer will be all about history and celebrating. In June, a museum festival at the local history museum will make the town’s history tangible for visitors. The grand highlight will be the big village festival from Aug. 7 to 9 at the village square. There will be plenty for guests to enjoy, traditional crafts can be experienced up close in the old forge, and children can let off steam in a village rally. Older visitors can enjoy a specially brewed festival beer made for the anniversary. The highlight of the festival weekend will be the large parade through the streets of Queidersbach on Aug. 9.

Welcoming yet another new year together

Even as autumn and winter arrive, the festivities will continue without interruption. After the October fair, the men’s choral society will host an autumn concert, accompanied by another museum day. The eventful year will draw to a close on Dec. 31 with a community-wide New Year’s Eve celebration. To preserve the memories of these special months, the Open Channel will document the festivities and present a film compilation at the end of the anniversary year.

Mayor Harald Vierling is eagerly looking forward to celebrating the anniversary alongside local clubs and neighboring communities. “The community wishes to honor the ties between its past, present, and future. From the festive opening in January to the New Year’s Eve celebration, this year is meant to be enjoyed in a spirit of togetherness and to further strengthen our already vibrant village community,” he says, warmly inviting guests from near, far, and even from across the seven seas to join in the festivities.

Strengthening Partnerships: 86 AES, Royal Netherlands

Inside a static C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, U.S. Airmen assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron joined NATO partners from the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force in a subject matter exchange designed to enhance interoperability and strengthen medical evacuation capabilities, Jan. 6-9.

The 86th AES hosted service members from Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force Operational Healthcare Unit that combined hands-on medical training, simulationbased learning and insight into each service’s patient care kits and equipment.

By exchanging knowledge and observing each other’s methods, both teams gained insight into how Allied operations enhance mission execution.

“The biggest takeaway was that we can not only work together in tandem, but we can also work together integrated, taking care of the same patients together,” said Senior Airman Joseph Pearson, 86th AES mission management technician.

Working shoulder to shoulder, they compared techniques, asked questions and walked through various patient care procedures and scenarios. Throughout the week, they operated not as separate units, but as partners preparing for the same mission.

“Training together prepares us to take care of a large amount of patients in large scale conflicts,” said Captain Ramon “Zwitsal” Van Belzen, Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force Operational Healthcare Unit section lead. “It felt quite natural to work together, it actually went quite smoothly

and quickly to work with people we’ve never worked with before.”

Low-light medical scenarios added another layer of realism, challenging both teams to adapt patient care to conditions that mirror real-life operational environments. Training together in these settings fostered teamwork and communications skills where coordination and clarity make a critical difference.

“The most valuable thing that we all received during this training opportunity was learning what our partner forces are able to do,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Maria Cruz-Fehr, 86th AES flight nurse. “With us being part of NATO and working with NATO side by side, we actually have a better understanding of our partner’s capacity. We know how they work now and how they operate, and we can essentially create mission success in our aeromedical evacuation missions by saving lives.”

Aeromedical evacuation personnel are required to make quick and complex medical decisions and adapt to changing medical emergencies while ensuring safety. Often working with just a flight nurse and medical technicians aboard an aircraft, the 86th AES are trained to provide critical medical care while transporting injured service members from deployed locations. Being able to perform these functions while operating in conjunction with NATO Allies is crucial to seamless mission execution.

“As the Dutch, we were very privileged to be here at Ramstein Air Base and happy to train together,” Zwitsal said. “It was nice to be able to make steps forward for the future and we hope we have more training opportunities together to increase both our proficiency and interoperability so we can take care of our patients in the air in whatever circumstances that might be.”

Guidelines for operating home-based businesses in Germany

U.S. Army Europe and Africa Customs Agency

Tax- and duty-free privileges under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement are not permitted for any commercial enterprise, including home-based businesses, according to customs officials.

This prohibition extends to U.S. Army in Europe and Africa-plated privately owned vehicles, which are for personal use only. Using these vehicles for business, such as delivering goods or providing transportation for a fee, is prohibited. A vehicle needed for a business must be registered in the German system and will not be eligible for tax-free fuel.

The Military Postal Service is also restricted to personal use and cannot be used to send or receive business-related items or correspondence. For items purchased in countries outside the European Union, all goods intended for commercial activities must be cleared by German customs. The AEA 550-175A customs form cannot be used to avoid duties or taxes on these items.

Additionally, tax-free goods from the Commissary, Exchange, or the

CROSSWORD

Army and Air Force Exchange Service catalog must not be used for business purposes. This includes using a computer from the Exchange for business operations or food from the Commissary for a baking or catering business. Value Added Tax forms cannot be used to purchase business equipment or supplies. A home-

based business is a private enterprise conducted from a residence and can be a valuable source of employment for family members of sponsors stationed in Germany.

However, whether working as a freelancer, an interior decorator making house calls, an online merchant or developing a startup,

owners must comply with German law and U.S. military regulations.

Adherence to these guidelines helps avoid significant fines, tax demands and potential prosecution by German authorities, as well as military administrative or civilian misconduct actions.

Tips for forming healthier habits in the new year

Most of us make resolutions on New Year’s Day and, despite our best intentions, give up on them well before the first of February.

But did you know that it takes 21 days to form a new habit and 6 months to make it a routine? If you start today, by early summer, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you!

Try these easy tricks to create 3 new habits that, in just 21 days, will produce a real and lasting change well into the new year.

1. Drink More Water

Start your day with a nice, big glass of water – before your coffee or tea. This simple trick will rehydrate you after a long (or short) night of sleep and help wake up your body and your brain! Even a 2 percent level of dehydration can have a significant impact on your physical and mental performance.

Keep a water bottle nearby

After you have your first glass of water, fill a water bottle and keep it with you. Keep it in the car, in your sports bag, in your purse, and on your desk. Refill and sip it all day. Aim to drink half of your ideal weight in ounces everyday. For example, if your ideal weight is 120 pounds, drink 60 oz. of water. That’s less than 4 16 oz. glasses a day. If you have one before breakfast, you’re already 25 percent there! Good start!

2. Get Active

You don’t have to work out 2 hours a day at the gym but you do need to do something that gets your heart rate up… every day. Bike, hike, walk, jog, belly dance, ski, whatever!

Mix up your routine to keep it interesting. Some people like to exercise first thing, before the day gets away from them. It helps them feel energized and ready to take on the day. For others, a mid-day break is what they need to power through the afternoon doldrums. I like to workout at the end of the day to release stress. It helps me refocus and enjoy time with my family. Figure out what time works best for you.

Schedule it – in writing

Add your workout plan right into your daily planner. Commit to it just as you would a doctor appointment or an important meeting. Think of it as putting your oxygen mask on first so you can help others. It’s that important! Get your family on board and find a buddy to help keep you accountable. You’ll be helping each other!

Sneak “small acts of fitness” into your day

Small changes can really add up to big results when you choose action over inaction. If it helps, just pretend you have a doctor’s prescription for these behaviors and you’ll need to report back on how well you followed his or her orders.

Always take the stairs, never the elevator or escalator. Park as far as you can from the office, the mall entrance, the dry cleaner and

the grocery store and walk. Think of your heavy grocery bags, or small children, as weights and make each “lift” count! At home, take the stairs 2 at a time, slowly. Believe me, these small acts of fitness really add up!

3. Plan Meals

If you know what your menu plan is for the week, you won’t be tempted to impulse buy or opt for pizza. It saves time and money too!

Make a weekly grocery list and stick to it

Replenish your staples and choose organic, lean meats, seasonal fruits and veggies, and fresh herbs that fit your menu. Only buy what you need. Avoid processed food, sodas and junk food. Keep a variety of healthy foods at home for quick, easy snacks and meals.

Make “Dinner in a Bowl” with pasta, protein and veggies

I know, you’ve probably been told that pasta is fattening and that carbs are bad. The truth is that pasta is a complex carbohydrate that can be a nutritious part of healthy diet. If you balance the carbs in the pasta with high-quality, lean protein, good fats and lots of healthy, fresh veggies, then it becomes the perfect nutrient-rich mix that you need to replenish your energy reserves and nourish

your body. Pasta tastes great too.

Try one healthy pasta recipe once a week

If you do this for a full 6 months, you’ll have 24 easy and nutritious pasta recipes that you can rely on. Recipes you can easily adapt to what’s in season, what’s available locally and your family’s preferences. You can include a few special occasion recipes too like meaty lasagna and pasta Alfredo for those times when you need to feed a crowd or just want some serious comfort food! Remember to watch the portion size, savor the meal slowly, follow with a healthy, fresh salad and enjoy the moment…la dolce vita (the sweet life).

Here’s an easy recipe to start you off:

Recipe: Spaghetti with Garlic, Shrimp and Parsley

This quick and easy pasta recipe for spaghetti with garlic, shrimp and parsley is one of my go-to favorites for a fast, delicious school night dinner or light weekend supper. It serves up high-quality shrimp protein, heart-healthy olive oil, immune-boosting garlic, vitamin C from the lemon, and antioxidants, minerals and dietary fiber from the fresh parsley…and tastes amazing! The key to this recipe is to use fresh herbs, real lemon and not to overcook the shrimp…you just want to warm them and blend the flavors.

I keep several bags of frozen shrimp in my freezer just for this dish.

Ingredients (serves 4 for dinner, 6 for lunch)

• 1 lb. (16 oz.) package of spaghetti

• 1 (24 oz.) package frozen, (cooked and peeled) large shrimp (35-45 pieces)

• 2 tbs. extra virgin olive oil

• 2-3 tbs. butter

• 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, minced (more to taste)

• A handful of FRESH flat-leaf Italian parsley, rinsed, dried and rough chopped

• 1-2 tbs. FRESH lemon juice (1/2 a lemon)

• 1 tsp. fresh lemon zest

• Salt and fresh-cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

Put a large pot of water on to boil. (Use 4 quarts/litres for a pound of pasta.)

While the water is heating place the frozen shrimp in a colander in the sink and run lukewarm water over them until thawed, about 5 minutes. (Don’t leave them in a bowl of water, the water should be moving). Once the shrimp are thawed, remove the tails (optional). Do this under running water to make it easier. Place the clean shrimp on paper towels to dry.

Once the water is at a rolling boil, add 2 tbs of salt and drop in the pasta. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Follow the cooking time on the package (about 10 minutes) or until just al dente (firm to the bite). The pasta will continue to cook once combined with the sauce so slightly underdone is perfect!

While the pasta is cooking add the olive oil to a medium-size cold saucepan and turn the heat to medium-high. Add the minced garlic and stir until fragrant, about a minute or two. Don’t allow the garlic to brown or it will be bitter. Add the butter, half of the fresh parsley, the lemon juice, and the lemon zest. Season lightly with salt and fresh-cracked black pepper and stir. Add in the shrimp and toss until well coated. Reduce the heat to low. You just want the

flavors to blend and the shrimp to warm. You do NOT want to cook the shrimp. If your pasta will take a while, just take the shrimp pan off the heat and let it sit. The flavors will continue to blend.

A minute before the pasta is done, carefully reserve a 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water and set aside. Drain the pasta and add the hot pasta back into the hot pot, off the heat. Add the shrimp and sauce, scraping with a rubber spatula to get every tasty bit. Toss gently. Add the pasta water, a splash at a time, to smooth out the sauce to a lovely, satiny finish. Add the remainder of the fresh parsley. Serve immediately with a green salad, crisp white wine and fresh bread.

To make it a meal in a bowl, add a cup of fresh or frozen peas, broccoli or asparagus pieces to the pasta water during the last 2 minutes. Drain with the pasta and toss with the sauce.

Here’s to your 3 new habits and a happy and healthy new year!

Scheduling small acts of fitness, such as always taking the stairs, can make a big difference.

NANCY from Page 1

green space, historical significance and stunning architecture. Even better, it’s just a quick trip from Germany – and one that doesn’t involve Paris traffic! So after you’ve found a place to stay (preferably in or near the city center), here are four great ways to enjoy your time in Nancy (pronounced non-see).

Hang out at Place Stanislas

This gorgeous, pedestrian-only space will inspire awe in even the most jaded Euro traveler. Hands-down one of the most beautiful architectural creations in France, Place Stanislas contains a large square and a series of magnificent 18th century buildings (that are breathtaking at night when illuminated).

Even better, Place Stanislas is more than just a tourist destination. Locals are there, too — in cafés, in conversations, and in constant motion.

It’s also a tribute to Europe’s complicated history. Originally conceived as a monument to King Louis XV, it was built between 1752 and 1755. At the time, Louis XV’s father-in-law was a recently deposed Polish king named Stanislas who had been named the Duke of Lorraine as a consolation prize for losing his crown. When the French Revolution came and kings fell out of favor for good in the early 19th century, the place was named after Stanislas.

Walk the City Center

Nancy’s city center is a gem, and it has something for everyone. Looking for a place to eat or drink? You’ll find street food, brasseries, coffee shops, wine bars, high-end restaurants, creperies, and candy stores. You can also, of course, find a spot to try Quiche Lorraine in Lorraine.

Nancy has shopping, too. Visitors will find chic boutiques and artisan stores on the same streets as chain stores. Look for chances, too, to come home with regional specialties. Lorraine does really well when it comes to meats, cheeses, wines, and candies.

And no visit to the city would be complete without a trip to the beautiful Parc de la Pepinière. This central park is excellent during any season. But it’s like a paradise during summer, and offers fun for the

whole family — including mini golf, ice cream vendors, and a small zoo.

Visit a museum

Sometimes, museums can be overwhelming. Fortunately, Nancy has a number of excellent, easy-to-navigate museums that will maximize your enjoyment without wiping you out completely.

The Museum of Fine Arts (€10 during high season, €7 otherwise) is a great place to start. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. nearly every day, it boasts artwork from a number of heavy hitters, including Picasso, Manet and Rubens. Another great choice — and one that draws on Nancy’s position as one of the most “Art Nouveau” cities in France — is the Art Nouveau museum (open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., €7 for an adult ticket).

Nancy also has an aquarium that offers workshops for children, light/sound shows, and — of course — plenty of cool aquatic life. The Museum Aquarium is open Tuesday-Sunday. Adult tickets cost €5.50.

Markets and the Nancy Thermal

Nancy has a beautiful variety of markets, including a once-a-month flea mar-

ket. The Nancy Central Market offers a covered shopping experience, more than 60 booths, stalls, and shops, as well as an immersion into bustling everyday life. Visitors can also enjoy some pool time while in Nancy. The Nancy Thermal is a large aquatic park with pools, slides, water works and a spa. It’s just right

during a long, hot summer day — or a short, cold winter day!

Getting

to Nancy

By car, Nancy is 2 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Wiesbaden, and 3.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.

AT THE MOVIES

Clika (2026)

Aspiring small town musician Chito (JayDee) is determined to make it big. When a clip of him performing one of his songs goes viral, he seizes the opportunity and pushes to carve out a place for himself in the new wave of Mexican-American music…and ultimately gets caught in a game more dangerous than anticipated.
