The Military and Family Readiness Center hosted the 2026 Keys Symposium on Jan. 13, bringing together Key Support Liaisons, unit leaders and helping agencies to strengthen support networks for Airmen and families across the Kaiserslautern Military Community and the 86th Airlift Wing’s geographically separated units. Formerly known as the Key Spouse program, the Commander's Key Support Program has evolved to reflect a more inclusive approach to unit support. To ensure KSLs are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to support their units, the M&FRC hosts the Keys Symposium annually, providing continuing education and collaboration opportunities for volunteers and leaders across the KMC. “The goal of the symposium is to make sure our Key Support Liaisons feel confident, connected and prepared to support Airmen and families,” said Meg Hewes, M&FRC community readiness specialist. “Those early connections and first impressions can shape someone’s entire
experience overseas.” During the symposium, which was themed “First Impressions, Lasting Impact,” participants took part in panel discussions, guided conversations and collaborative sessions focused on improving newcomer engagement, strengthening communication within units and sharing best practices for supporting Airmen and families. Event organizers also discussed real-world scenarios and emphasized early outreach, trust-building and coordination with helping agencies. “The newcomer and sponsorship piece is critical,” said Typhany Lovdahl, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron Key Support Liaison. “When families are contacted before they arrive or as soon as they get here, they’re 90 percent more likely to stay involved with their squad-

ron, whether that’s participating in events, volunteering or eventually becoming Key Support Liaisons.” By strengthening the knowledge and connections of KSLs, the Keys Symposium helped ensure Airmen and families joining Team Ramstein experience a seamless transition to the installation and surrounding community. That early support allows Airmen to remain focused on the mission, reinforces resilience across the force and contributes to long-lasting readiness. “It’s often said the Air Force recruits Airmen but retains families,” Hewes added. “When families and Airmen are supported beyond just their work, it strengthens the force by improving readiness, retention and resiliency, creating a positive impact across the Air Force.”

CSAF, CMSAF make inaugural visit to USAFE-AFAFRICA, meet with Ramstein Airmen by 1st Lt. Lauren Niemi U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Wolfe, accompanied by their spouses, Cindy Wilsbach and Dr. Doniel Wolfe, visited with Airmen from Ramstein’s 86th Airlift Wing and tenant units, United States Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa Dec. 22–23, 2025. The visit wrapped up a sevenbase trip across the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility, providing them an opportunity to engage with Airmen at all levels who are standing watch 365 days a year. The leaders heard first-hand about the myriad missions, underscoring the strategic location of Ramstein that enables the projection of airpower and global reach. The visit included an all-call
involving members from across Ramstein Air Base, including the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 406th Air Expeditionary Wing, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, 603rd Air Operations Center and 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, discussing how each unit can contribute to the leadership team’s vision for the future of the Air Force. Airmen also had the opportunity to ask questions and hear their perspective as the top leaders in the service. “USAFE-AFAFRICA projects combat airpower in Europe and deters aggression in the region,” Wilsbach stated, “We integrate with our partners so that we can respond to any emerging threats in this area of responsibility.” Additionally, the CSAF and CMSAF met with senior leadership from the tenant wings over lunch and held office calls with the Third Air Force and USAFE-AFAFRICA

commanders, reinforcing varying mission sets and capabilities provided in daily operations and how they fit in with the Air Force’s strategic vision. “Every single Airman has a connection to generating air power. From finance to fighters, we are all part of the mission to fly and fix to deter our adversaries,” says Wolfe, “We can’t lose sight of that. Every effort counts when considering modern near-peer threats.” The leadership team recognized five Airmen for exemplifying excellence, peer leadership and the warrior ethos essential to mission success. The wives of CSAF and CMSAF also played an active role in the visit, meeting with members of the Key Support Liaison program to better understand the family support landscape within the joint military community, including medical care, DoDEA schools, and childcare resources. “Despite being the largest U.S. community outside of the United
States, there are often additional difficulties associated with living away from home,” Mrs. Wilsbach said. “In understanding these challenges and their support systems, we can help ensure that Airmen and families thrive personally and professionally during their time here.” These engagements help support and strengthen the Kaiserslautern Military Community as a whole, keeping its
Airmen resilient, ready and lethal in a theater where every minute of every mission counts toward homeland security. “Our Airmen overseas are working hard to protect our national interests abroad, and often sacrificing time with loved ones,” Wilsbach said. “I’m incredibly proud to be serving with them, and I am continually impressed by their dedication, and commitment to the mission.”

449 AEG Airmen test readiness during Exercise Pale Serpent Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Christian Silvera 406th Air Expeditionary Wing
CAMP LEMONNIER, DJIBOUTI — Airmen from the 449th Air Expeditionary Group, in conjunction with U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Navy partners, conducted readiness training during Exercise Pale Serpent, Dec. 26–29, 2025. The joint command and control exercise was led by Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. It prepared and evaluated units’ ability to establish and refine command and control relationships between joint components and installation commanders, adapt to operational changes and tested their reaction to working under different conditions in response to real-world contingencies across East Africa. Participants were also tested on their ability to synchronize actions, adapt to dynamic operational changes, and react effectively under a variety of conditions, all of which simulate real-world contingencies across the region. Pale Serpent is comprehensive, integrating key functions such as Force Protection, Force Health Protection, Physical Security and Anti-Terrorism to ensure the holistic readiness and security of U.S. Forces, Allies and Partners. The basewide exercise placed different 449th elements into parallel training scenarios designed to test how each mission set could operate in a high-tempo environment, from trauma care to aeromedical evacuation. At Chabelley Airfield, U.S. Air Force medical personnel assigned to the 776th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron treated simulated casualties inside the installation’s medical treatment facility alongside partner medical teams, practicing trauma care, triage and patient stabilization. “Triage took place outside, and then we were assigning casualties into the appropriate rooms,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Gracie Livengood, 776th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron aerospace medical service technician. “The most immediate patients came into the trauma bay, and we treated them while delayed and minimal patients

were handled in the other bays.” The scenario forced medics to manage multiple patients at once while working through limited space, equipment and personnel, requiring constant communication and rapid decision-making across the treatment teams. “This training helps us get prepared if an actual emergency happens,” Livengood said. “It ensures our skills are up to date, that we’re doing everything properly, and that we have the equipment we need to provide the best quality of care.” Livengood said the exercise also highlighted the importance of teamwork in highstress medical situations. “There are always challenges, especially when we’re relatively short-staffed for a mass-casualty exercise,” Livengood said. “But everyone did really well helping each other out, moving from bed to bed and making sure people were taken care of.” While medical teams trained at Chabelley, aeromedical evacuation personnel assigned

to the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight conducted parallel readiness training at Camp Lemonnier, preparing to move patients from the Expeditionary Medical Facility to higher levels of care. During Pale Serpent, the 10th EAEF employed its full aeromedical evacuation capability, including a Critical Care Air Transport Team consisting of a physician, critical care nurse and respiratory therapist, along with two flight nurses and four aeromedical technicians. “Having aeromedical evacuation capabilities in this region is important so we can quickly move patients to a higher echelon of care,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Christina Newby-Martinez, 10th EAEF commander. “We’re trained to provide the capability to rapidly move large numbers of patients by air during mass casualty events, which ensures timely redistribution of casualties to appropriate medical facilities.” When this capability is integrated with Critical Care Air Transport Teams special-
ized in transporting critically ill patients who require advanced, intensive and continuous medical care enroute, there is a seamless transition of care across the full spectrum of patient acuity, Newby-Martinez explained. Exercises like Pale Serpent are essential for preparing crews to operate under pressure. “Training like Pale Serpent tests how quickly our teams can respond, pushes them to work outside of their normal crew complement and forces them to be ready for the unknown injuries that could arrive on an aircraft,” Newby-Martinez said. “It also helps us see where we need to improve communication when we’re working in a multi-service environment.” Although 449th AEG elements trained in different locations, their efforts strengthened their ability to respond immediately and effectively to mass-casualty emergencies, reinforcing crisis readiness at one of U.S. Africa Command’s most operationally critical hubs in East Africa.

A passionate Veterinarian and dedicated Soldier Story & photos by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe
WIESBADEN — Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz, veterinarian embodies the spirit of the Army with unique blend of military discipline and veterinary expertise. From a young age, Capt. Amanda Zanger, a South Dakota native, knew she wanted to dedicate her life to animal care. “I grew up with a lot of different kind of animals and have always been passionate about them,” she recalls. This passion led her to seek a path that would allow her to merge her love for animals with a meaningful career. After graduating high school, she applied for a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program, firmly believing that joining the military would provide her the opportunity to serve her country while practicing veterinary medicine. Zanger’s journey took her to Iowa State University, where she earned a bachelor’s
degree in animal science. “It was always my plan A to join the military,” Zanger explains. Inspired by her father’s and brother’s military service and a chance encounter with a military veterinarian, Zanger was determined to carve a niche for herself in the Army. Although, initially branched as military police reservist, she seized the opportunity to delay her Army career as she entered into the Health Professional Scholarship Program which allowed her to continue her studies. She then earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University. Since then, Zanger has fully embraced her dual role as a soldier and veterinarian. “I just love it. I love the opportunities,” Zanger says. “I get to practice veterinary medicine, mentor soldiers and travel to so many different countries conducting food audits.” Her enthusiasm for the Army’s offerings is evident in her recent participation in the Medical Readiness Command Europe’s Best

Medic Competition. Although her team didn’t win, Zanger treasures the experience, citing it as a cherished memory. “It was great to be around a bunch of motivated soldiers who all wanted to better themselves and are up for a challenge,” Zanger reflects. The Best Medic competition, a rigorous three-day event that tests soldiers’ skills both physically and mentally, was a significant challenge for Zanger. “I was happy to be there and represent,” Zanger said, emphasizing the importance of camaraderie and self-improvement in such competitions. While the demands of the event were distinct from her daily responsibilities, she approached it with determination, training physically to rise to the challenge. On a typical day, Zanger manages a veterinary treatment facility, where she con-
ducts health and wellness appointments for privately owned animals and oversees the care of military working dogs. Her passion for education is evident in her commitment to providing continuous training for her staff and MWD handlers. “We continuously provide training opportunities for our staff and MWD handlers,” Zanger notes, illustrating her dedication to excellence in veterinary care. Zanger’s husband plays a crucial role in her journey, serving as her biggest motivator. “He pushes me to become the best version of myself and reminds me of all the reasons why I enjoy being in the Army,” Zanger shares. This support fuels her aspirations to participate in future competitions and pursue further education, including food and water risk assessment courses and equine management. With less than two years remaining in Wiesbaden, Zanger has set ambitious goals, including hosting a UH-60 mass medevac training for handlers, pilots, and veterinary technicians. This innovative training will simulate airlifting MWDs from Wiesbaden to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and ultimately to the Veterinary Medical Center Europe for care. “I never want to settle and get too comfortable as a soldier,” she states. “As an officer, you should always be ready, mentally and physically. You’re a soldier first.” As she continues to navigate her dual roles as a soldier and veterinarian, Zanger stands as an inspiring example to better herself and those around her.

435 AGOW Safety Office wins USAFE/AFAFRICA Safety Award by Capt. Amber R. Kelly-Herard 435th Air Ground Operations Wing When U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ezekiel Burke, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Safety occupational safety manager, arrived here, he told U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. William Parisse, 435th AGOW Safety superintendent, “We are not going to be the people that just sit behind the desk, we’re going to be proactive, not reactive.” Less than two years later, the 435th AGOW Safety Office was named the 2025 United States Air Forces in Europe-United States Air Forces Africa Chief of Safety Outstanding Achievement Award Category IV — an award recognizing the most effective safety program. “This award is a big achievement because of all the hurdles and special projects that we tackle,” said Parisse, who’s been in the safety career field for eight years. “The mission is cool, you don’t see this anywhere else,” added Burke, who’s been in the career field for six years. Due to the wing’s unique mission, this safety office looks like no other office in the Air Force. The safety duo explained in most units safety offices are divided between occupational, aviation, and explosives, but in the 435th AGOW the two are required to become experts in all aspects of the job. “The biggest highlight was changing the stigma of safety being seen as an ’office of

Walls saves showers with quick thinking during exercise, lifts morale by Capt. Amber R. Kelly-Herard 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Staff Sgt. Colton Walls, 1st Combat Communications Squadron electrical power production supervisor, thought he was just doing what he needed to do to take care of the mission, but he ultimately provided much relief for Airmen during Exercise Heavy Rain 25. “My team was in charge of setting up the site for the Heavy Rain exercise,” said Walls. “We realized we didn’t have the right attachments for the French fire hydrants, so we were in a pickle.” Without the correct parts, about 180 Airmen would have been without showers for the two-week exercise. “We had to work around making adapters fit with a European fire hydrant to get water running for showers,” said Senior Airman Andrew Falsone, 1 CBCS heating, ventilation, and air conditioning journeyman. Falsone explained they tried calling around, but they couldn’t find a solution, so Walls took matters into his own hands. “I drove to Germany and went to a hardware store to get the parts to retrofit the fire hydrant,” he said. “I tested it and was able to use the water.” Although Walls was setting up HVAC, Walls drew from his previous experience working at a surface water treatment plant in Paris, Texas, for seven years before joining the Air Force.

“As a power pro, this was outside of my wheelhouse, but civil engineers make things work,” said Walls. “It was up in the air, we had to be careful operating because if the water pressure increased too much, it would blow up and we’d have to start over, so I was the only one who operated the hydrant and refill the water bladder every day.” As a safety precaution, an independent duty medical technician tested the water and confirmed it was safe for showering.
“I felt pretty good, I didn’t think much about it, but I’m glad it was able to work,” said Walls. “I know people would’ve been upset to work without showers and we would’ve had low morale and safety concerns.” His innovation paid off as 435 AGOW leadership took notice. He was coined by the 435 AGOW commander and safety office. “I thought it wasn’t too big of a deal, and no one would notice,” said Walls. “I
was definitely wrong, a lot of people were impressed and wanted to come take pictures with me and the hydrant.” Walls credits his leadership for empowering him. “My unit is really flexible,” he said. “In expeditionary conditions, we have to adapt and overcome to get the mission done efficiently and effectively, so they trusted me enough to make a decision and take risks.”

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, German Firefighter joint Medical Genetics Center: Empowering patients one test at a time training strengthens community safety Story & photo by Senior Airman Devyn Waits 81st Training Wing Serving 9.5 million beneficiaries, the Medical Genetics Center at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, the only genetics laboratory in the War Department, supports military medical facilities around the globe with centralized testing and consultative service. The lab empowers patients by giving them insight into their health, enabling them to take proactive measures that support not only their own wellness but also that of their families. “When we perform tests, we can give families a peace of mind,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Joel Hughes, 359th Diagnostics and Therapeutics Squadron clinical and laboratory geneticist. “For example, with a noninvasive pregnancy test, we screen the developing baby’s health for any potential conditions, allowing us to answer questions an expecting family may have and give them, as well as their medical team, valuable time to prepare for the birth and any medical necessities.” Hughes added that the lab can perform a wide variety of tests, including whole genome sequencing, cancer screening, carrier screening, karyotyping and noninvasive pregnancy testing, to help service members and their families make informed decisions during critical moments of their lives. Genetic testing services can also play a key role in supporting a service member’s career, as they help determine conditions that could negatively impact performance, readiness or safety. “One of the more common orders we get are for patients with cardiac issues,” said Air Force Maj. Nicholas Singhmiller, 359th DTS clinical and laboratory geneticist. “If an airman in a physically demanding career sees a cardiologist, and that provider notices a potential heart issue, they refer them to us. Our role is to determine whether there’s a genetic component to the problem, because that airman now cannot do any heavy lifting or strenuous activities due to possibly having a dangerous heart condition.” Singhmiller added that running tests

While medical issues may still be present, airmen can walk away with knowledge to help them choose the next steps in their careers. “Even if a diagnosis did result in a medical evaluation board, it gives the airman peace of mind because they’ve caught this condition before it causes harm,” he said. The lab’s ability to efficiently support its patients and provide answers to their health is also tied to its team of geneticists. “One of the great things about our geneticists is that they come to the lab with experience in a previous field,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Felecia Washington, 359th DTS deputy commander. “Dr. Hughes’s background in internal medicine and Dr. Singhmiller’s in pediatrics enhances their abilities as geneticists, because they can use that to uniquely analyze a family’s medical history, connect it to the patient’s health and effectively explain what’s happening to them.” While some tests are occasionally outsourced to other clinics, most tests can be ordered and completed in the lab, reducing coordination time and getting results to patients faster. The genetics lab’s commitment to maximizing efficiency and enhancing medical understanding helps service members around the globe make informed decisions for their health and their families, fostering a healthier, more resilient community across DOW.

The exercise strengthened teamwork between the departments so they are always ready to respond to a large-scale emergency. Deputy Fire Chief Robert Womble, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Emergency Services, said that the training, just one of multiple large trainings in the past months, was “highly effective” in building camaraderie, improving teamwork and getting to know each other’s capabilities. The training included 35 firefighters from USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Fire Station 2 and the Winnweiler Volunteer Fire Department. For this training scenario, firefighters searched an entire floor of the old Sembach High School building for multiple missing persons scattered throughout the floor. The training was conducted after dark, which posed unique challenges for the two departments. “Things are different at nighttime,” he said. “Sometimes it’s a little bit more complex than the daylight hours. It’s a good opportunity for us to use all our equipment and challenge the firefighters on operations during nighttime hours.” The two departments used the recent training at the Department of Defense Education Activity school-turned-training facility as an opportunity to practice their search and rescue techniques, which vary from situation to situation. One thing that remains constant is the primary and secondary search practice. Womble explained that when searching a building, firefighters conduct a rapid initial search followed by a very thorough secondary search that includes opening all doors and checking under furniture. “The purpose of training with our host nation counterparts is several-tier,” Womble said. “One of them is for us to get to know each other and how we operate, and how
we can integrate on the scene of a major emergency. Therefore, if it were to happen for real, we’re not meeting each other for the very first time.” The USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Fire Department has a mutual aid agreement with eight different counties and towns near its installations, including Kaiserslautern, Mannheim, Germersheim, Baumholder and others, so that in the event of a large-scale emergency on or off a USAG RheinlandPfalz installation, both host nation and garrison fire stations will work together to respond to the emergency. These mutual aid agreements make regular training exercises between the fire departments even more essential to ensure adequate teamwork and effectiveness between the different departments, Womble said. Womble said that all his firefighters are required to be “double trained,” meaning they are required to be certified firefighters in both Germany and the United States. He noted that one of the most important things people can do to prepare themselves for emergencies is to have a plan of action for any situation that might occur. “Children, and even some adults, have a tendency to panic when something is going wrong, and they hide,” he said. “We try to educate people about having a plan, especially when you have smaller children.” Womble recommends families plan out things like a common meeting point and alternate routes in case an exit or stairway is inaccessible, which can make all the difference in the event of a fire or evacuation. The right kind of wrong: A uniform correction turns into a surprise promotion Story & photo by Capt. Carlton Vance, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Financial Management resource advisor, to learn his uniform was out of regulation. Chief Master Sgt. Jared Roman, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing command chief, called Vance to the front of the room during a 435th Wing Staff Agencies all-call to inform him his uniform was incorrect because he was promoted to technical sergeant through the Stripes for Exceptional Performers program. “It felt like I won the lottery,” said Vance. “I was a bit shocked to think multiple people felt my work warranted such a reward.” Vance’s selection for promotion may only be shocking to himself.
“Sergeant Vance’s promotion is extremely well deserved,” said Master Sgt. Kristi Jackman, 435 AGOW/FM superintendent and Vance’s supervisor. “He is a hardworking, dedicated, consistent, and humble professional who works well above his grade.” As a new technical sergeant, Vance plans to continue supporting the wing. “I will continue to assist our groups in managing the budget and accounting strategies we’ve implemented across the wing, as well as support our leaders in advocating for AGOW priorities within the theater,” he said. In his off-duty time, Vance enjoys working out, boxing, hiking with his dog, reading, and visiting art museums. The STEP program allows a commander to select a limited number of Airmen for promotion based on merit to the grades of staff sergeant through master sergeant based on their exceptional performance.

GARMISCH, GERMANY – More than 112 military dental practitioners, support staff and guest speakers primarily from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force convened in Garmisch, Germany recently to promote dental readiness, obtain continuing dental education credits and promote continued partnership among NATO and Allied partners. The 67th Annual U.S. Army Dental Education Readiness Training Event, hosted by Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe consisted of dental professionals and clinical staff from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force as well as representatives from the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force and German Bundeswehr. The annual dental training event is open to all Department of Defense dentists, NATO partner dentists and other affiliated dental providers. The five-day multiservice and multinational dental training event consisted of presentations, guest speakers, and several hands-on demonstrations covering a variety of dental topics to include dental forensic dentoalveolar and maxillofacial fracture closed reduction, management of soft tissue trauma, treatment of dental trauma, repair of broken dentures, military working dog dentistry and MASCAL triage. “The overall purpose of the training event was to empower dental professionals by delivering them twenty-five continuing education credits,” said Col. Kelley Tomsett, Assistant Chief of Staff for Dental Services Medical Readiness Command Europe and Chief Dental Officer Defense Health Network Europe. “The 5-day training event included didactic lectures, hands-on workshops, and

In addition to dental education and readiness, this year’s dental training event offered attendees the opportunity to build relationships and promote fellowship among sister services as well as NATO and Allied partners. “Training events like this significantly enhance clinical and operational readiness, while fostering invaluable NATO camaraderie by bringing together a global network of experts and peers,” Tomsett added. “Having our NATO partners participate in these training events is critically important in strengthening bonds and partnerships and it also promotes increased integration and improves our interoperability and readiness in times of war.” According to senior Army medical officials, dental readiness, and oral health are just as important as physical health. When a Soldier has problems with their teeth or gums, it can have a severe impact on their ability to perform their mission. And that
impacts readiness. “Dental readiness is critical when it comes to the deployment and overall effectiveness of our servicemembers,” said Tomsett. “A dental emergency in a deployed environment can be a significant liability to our fighting force. Oral health is a key component of readiness, and the importance of dental readiness cannot be overstated. In addition, the Army Dental Corps supports the Army’s readiness mission by promoting dental health; preventing and treating oral and dental disease; providing far forward dental treatment; and providing early treatment of severe oral and maxillofacial injuries.” With dental readiness being one of the key focus areas of the dental training event, and considering the Army's overall focus on Soldier readiness, the Army dental community is constantly looking for ways to reduce Soldier down time so they can spend more time preparing for their wartime mission. As such, a critical component of readiness is maintaining good dental health.

“If a Soldier’s oral health is not properly maintained, it can result in the Soldier becoming nondeployable, and if already deployed, can render them non-missioncapable,” added Tomsett. “Again, the importance of dental readiness cannot be overstated.” According to Army dental officials, it is the individual Soldier who has the most control over their dental health and readiness. “Soldiers who incorporate good preventive dental hygiene practices prior to deployment are far less likely to become dental casualty’s secondary to disease,” said Tomsett “Individual preventive dental care practices include eating a balanced diet, brushing, and flossing of the teeth and gums on a regular basis, and abstaining from using tobacco products. These measures can effectively prevent the development of tooth decay and oral disease.” According to senior Army officials, readiness is one of the top priorities for not just the Army, but for all branches of military service and supporting that readiness mission is the Army Dental Corps. “The Army Dental Corps supports the Army’s Readiness mission by promoting dental health; preventing and treating oral and dental disease; providing far forward dental treatment; and providing early treatment of severe oral and maxillofacial injuries,” Tomsett added. “In addition, our Army dentists are responsible for ensuring that each Soldier has optimal oral health and is prepared for deployment without the risk of becoming a non-combat dental casualty.” Army dental officials in charge of the training event indicated that planning is already underway for the 68th Annual Dental Education Readiness Training Event in October 2026.

The largest Fasching parade in the region will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 17 this year. This year for the first time the Red Wine Hike will take place on two weekends in a row. Fresh air, delicacies and excellent red wines are guaranteed! The event starts with a torchlight parade on Friday evening at 6 p.m. Torches are sold in front of the historic city hall. From there the parade leads to the first booth of the actual hiking trail. The trail has a length of 4.3 miles and leads through the wonderful vineyards of Freinsheim. Along the loop road, participants can sample selected wines and Glühwein (mulled wine) of the local vintners and enjoy Palatinate specialties offered at
13 stopover points. The booths along the trail are open from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and from 11.30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can easily get to Freinsheim by train, parking in the small town is almost impossible. From the train station, follow the course of Bahnhofstraße. At the Stadt-Apotheke, turn left into Herxheimer Straße and then take the first right, Friedrich-Bruch-Straße. From Friedrich-Bruch-Straße, continue onto Dackenheimer Straße, passing the kindergarten and the fire station, until you reach the sports field. The path leads directly to an underpass of the bypass road. After passing through, you will immediately reach the starting point of the hike. In addition, there is a legend about him sleeping in a cave in the Kyffhäuser Mountains in Thüringen, only to awaken to save the nation. A gigantic statue depicts him resting in an armchair waiting for this special moment. It is therefore no surprise that he was
considered one of the mightiest people in the 12th century. His rule is generally considered one of prosperity, economic growth, and increased scholarship but also one of war and conflict. The pride of being one of the favorite cities of such an important historical figure can even be seen in the name of the city – Kaiser is the German word for “emperor” while Lauter probably comes from an old Latin expression (lutra) for “clear water.” So the city is essentially
called “the emperor’s clear spring.” As a 70-year-old he set out on his third crusade, but never made it to Jerusalem. He didn’t heroically die in battle, but allegedly drowned in Saleph River, now near Göksu/Silifke in Turkiye, while taking a bath and his human remains are said to be buried in Jerusalem. Friedrich I, was the first “Emperor of the German Holy Roman Empire” and from the royal Staufer family. He was born in Hagenau, France, in mid-December 1122 and was crowned as emperor in 1152. He resided in Kaiserslautern off and on from 1171 to 1187, where he erected a Kaiserpfalz (an imperial palace) and enjoyed fishing in one of the many ponds surrounding the city. The palace was located just below the City Hall in Kaiserslautern and parts of it have been excavated to view, while a fish also plays a significant role in the city. The emperor was quite an adventurous character and well-traveled for his times. One of his favorite pastimes was building palaces wherever he set foot. His nickname Barbarossa means “red beard” in Italian and he ruled over an area encompassing most of modern-day Germany, Czechia, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and parts of France and Poland. He had a Kaiserpfalz built near Düsseldorf, which is now called Kaiserswerth, to charge toll from ships along the Rhein River. In the year 1189 he declared the City

Justin Zimmerman, a 74D Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist who serves with the 519th Hospital Center, 30th Medical Brigade. Zimmerman expertly planned and executed the 519th HC CBRN range, enabling Soldiers to conduct critical protective-mask confidence training. He maximized training efficiency and ensured 124 Soldiers were fully trained, despite having a limited supply of CBRN capsules. His detailed coordination, resource management, and on-site leadership significantly enhanced the unit’s readiness and proficiency in CBRN protective measures.

Survivors Guide to Recycling by Vincent Jassak MilitaryinGermany.com Recycling can be one of the more daunting tasks when living in Germany. Here is a cheat sheet about Kaiserslautern County’s recycling “rules.” If you live outside of the county, your regulations may be different. Please check with your local government office to verify what you need to do. Basically, in Kaiserslautern, there are five different types of recycling. Four of these five, waste, paper, compost, plastics and metal, are usually taken care of at your home location and the fifth, glass, is done in a centralized area in town. Here, by name and color, are some dos and don’ts about what belongs in each bin:
The Brown Bin (Bioabfälle) : This bin is meant for organic or biodegradable waste. Here’s what goes in this bin: grass clippings and weeds, coffee filters, tea bags, vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, bread, used paper towels and napkins, nut shells, banana and citrus peels and leftover cooked food. This container is also collected every

The Yellow Bags (Gelbe Säcke): These yellow bags can be picked up at your local government office. In my town they are distributed at the Verbandsgemeindeverwaltung. (Have you noticed Germans like to connect words together to make a new one?) They are free and, for us, are used for a majority of our trash. Here’s what goes in them: any plastic bottles, plastic wrappers, plastic containers (yogurt, margarine, etc.),
any styrofoam packaging, any metal food or drink cans, any aluminum food containers and foil, including yogurt tops, bottle caps, empty spray cans, juice and milk cartons. Things like sponges, old CDs, outdoor furniture or plastic toys do not go here. They should go in the black bin. These bags are collected the same day as the black bin. Glass: In your area, you will see dome-shaped containers, usually in groups of three. These are meant for glass. The three containers correspond to the color of the glass: brown, clear and green. This is usually an every-other-week trip for us, so it is not too bad. As you may have noticed, glass is used more often here; make sure the container you have does not have a pfand. This is a bottle deposit that you paid when you bought the item. It is usually applied to beer and water bottles and dairy products like yogurt.
The Blue Bin (Papiertonne): This container is meant for most paper products. This includes: newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, books, envelopes, file folders and items like cereal boxes. US Army Soldiers win five medals at Shotgun World Cup final in Doha by Lt. Col. Michelle Lunato 98th Training Division
FORT MOORE, GA. — Soldiers with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit won five medals at the International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup Final in Doha, Qatar, Dec. 4-9. The USAMU Shotgun Team demonstrated excellence as they earned Team USA two gold, a silver and two bronze Medals in their last competition of the year. This competition differed from others earlier in the year as it was the Soldiers’ first opportunity to shoot the newly formatted final, which upped the medal round from six to eight athletes. The new format also reduced the number of targets shot. So, while this decreased the presentation time for spectators, it increased the competitiveness for athletes, said USAMU Shotgun Team Chief, Sgt. 1st Class Seth Inman. “It looks like a lot quicker paced event, with less room for error due to less targets being shot.” The difference in formats really made the competition a “different animal,” said Staff Sgt. Will Hinton, a Dacula, Georgia, native who competed in Men’s Trap. “Before, you had a round of targets to build a lead, or bounce back, but now you have five or 10 targets and that’s all you get. It’s really do or die out there.” Hinton earned the first spot in the final after shooting 122 out of 125 in the qualification rounds. However, once all eight athletes make it into the final, it’s a new game with no room for error.

After two sets of five targets, Hinton was the only one to shoot every target. Moving on to four more sets of five, Hinton missed only one out of 30 targets, earning him the gold medal at his ISSF World Cup Final debut. The silver medalist, Guatemala’s Jean Pierre Brol, was only one target behind Hinton with 28 hits, demonstrating the intensity that Hinton
admitted feeling while competing in each set of five targets. “I would like to say I was cool, calm and collected, but I was on edge the whole time,” said Hinton. USAMU teammate Sgt. 1st Class Glenn Eller worked through the new format as well, completing the men’s trap podium with the bronze medal. Though the fivetime Olympian already has an Olympic gold medal and five ISSF World Cup final medals on his resume, this was his first world cup final medal in trap. The Katy, Texas native won his prior medals in double trap before it was removed from the Olympic roster. The mixed feelings on the new format and its demand for perfection were no different for the Soldiers competing in skeet. USAMU’s Sgt. Samatha Simonton earned the last spot in the women’s skeet medal round with a qualification score of 117. Under the old format, the Soldier would have missed the medal round, but a chance to compete for a medal is all that Simonton said she needed. “No one wants to have the last [spot], but it’s always fun to be the underdog too.” An opportunity was all Simonton needed to shoot her way back to the top of the pack. Of course, beating perfection is hard to do, so the Soldier had to settle for the silver medal after China’s Jiang Yiting won the gold medal with a perfect score of 36. The competition was just as intense in men’s skeet. Five-time Olympic medalist, Vincent Hancock — who is also a veteran of the USAMU — earned the top spot in the medal round with a perfect qualification score of 125. USAMU’s Staff Sgts. Dustan Taylor and Christian Elliott earned their spots into the top eight with scores of 123 and 120, respectively. Once in the final, there is no time to waste though, said, Elliott, a Greenwood, Indiana native. “The new format is quick. It’s a sprint. Your shooting 125 targets over two days and you’re boiled down to 12, and then past that, 12 more for 24 and 36. With eight athletes, it really is a sprint, it pays to be perfect.” As the eight athletes were whittled down, it was the three Americans battling it out for the medals. Elliott remained consistent, hitting all 36 targets to win him the gold medal. Hancock’s miss on target 24 meant the silver medal for him while Taylor settled for the bronze medal. With competition this intense, the USAMU Soldiers know that one target can make all the difference. And overall, Inman says he’s been impressed with his team this year. “They have distinguished themselves as one of the most productive teams the USAMU has ever fielded. I’m humbled and honored to lead such a talented and highly competitive group of Soldiers. The five team members who medaled at the world cup final, however, have risen even further. They standout amongst the team and the world stage. Currently, three of the five are ranked number one in the world, with the other two being in the top ten. I’m incredibly proud of them and wish them continued success as they move toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.”

If you just can’t take the German winter anymore, climb in the car, head southwest, cross the border into France, and keep going until you hit the Mediterranean Sea. Make sure you set your GPS for Nice, which is nice, and is pronounced like “niece.” Wordplay aside, Nice is an awesome place to spend winter break. It gets, on average, 137 hours of sun during December. Make sure to visit Nice’s English Promenade, which is one of the most famous seaside destinations in Europe (and often wonderfully empty during cold months). It often feels like a relief to walk it during the winter. With the waves lapping gently at the sand, and palm trees waving in the wind, you can almost forget that you’re not in a tropical paradise. Marseille, just down the coast, is also an excellent choice for sun-seekers.

Sicily, Italy Sicily sometimes gets forgotten. It’s understandable. There are so many fantastic destinations to visit a bit further north — Rome, Venice, Florence, Turin, and so on. But when winter comes, don’t forget Sicily! It’s one of the sunniest places in Europe when everything goes dark up north. Catania has 120 hours of sun during December, and Messina (just north of Catania), has 112. Sicily is also packed with history, having been inhabited at one time or another by
Sicilian beach near Castellammare.
Athens, Greece Athens has been charming visitors for thousands of years – especially in the winter. In December, the weather is warm, sunny (127 hours each December, on average), and tranquil. Visiting during the off-season also means fewer packed cultural monuments, more open seats at restaurants, friendlier locals, and slightly less insane traffic.
Even better: rent a car in Lisbon and drive a few hours south to Faro. There, you will find a dreamlike beach existence, 160 hours of December sunshine, and more peace and quiet than seems reasonable for any normal person. It’s amazing.

Southern Spain The southern coast of Spain is the place to be. In December, the cities of Alicante and Malaga offer more than 160 hours, on average, of sunshine. Barcelona is no slouch, either, offering 137 average hours of sun during December. For those of us who live in Germany, then, our chances of seeing the sun increase three to four times if we catch a flight to Spain. That’s huge. But it’s not just the sun, either. Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona have beaches, bars, restaurants, museums, parks, and so much else to do. With the warm weather and the Mediterranean Sea nearby, your spirits can’t help but lift. So start planning now!
Portugal Whatever you do, don’t overlook Portugal. Lisbon is just a three-hour nonstop flight from Frankfurt. There, you’ll find incredible shopping, restaurants, cultural opportunities, the Atlantic coast, English speakers everywhere, a great Christmas market, and 100 more hours of sunshine than you’ll find in the KMC.

In Germany, it feels sometimes like you can go from November to February without ever seeing the sun. This isn’t just exaggeration. On average, you can expect to see about 45 hours of sun each December in Kaiserslautern. That’s… not a lot of sun. That’s a work week. Here’s the good news, though. It doesn’t take a whole lot of time, effort or money to find sunny locations in Europe. Most sunny winter destinations require a short flight (2-3 hours), and some are reachable in a day or so by car. If you’re facing a dark German winter, then here are five places to start your travel planning.
