USAREUR-AF RMV launches new online renewal site

U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s Registry of Motor Vehicles is introducing a new online renewal system, providing personnel with a streamlined process similar to services available in the continental United States.

Starting in the coming weeks, renewal notices will include a QR code linking to the online renewal site, secured

through the Defense Manpower Data Center DS Logon system.

Users must ensure their APO address is updated to access this service.

How it works:

• Scan the QR code on your renewal notice.

• Upload the required documents, including the renewal notice, AE Form 190-1O, and inspection documentation. Inspection options include TÜV/DEKRA paperwork, AE

Form 190-1H from an on-post inspection station, or AE Form 190-1O with the inspection station’s stamp.

• Once documents are verified, you will receive a link and unique code to access the payment site.

• After payment is processed, your updated registration documents and decal will be mailed via certified mail to your registered APO address. You will need to sign for the documents at the pick-up window.

To avoid delays, documents must be submitted at least 30 days before your current registration expires. The system will not accept renewals within 30 days of the expiration date; for this, you must visit your local Field Registration Station. This new service is designed to provide convenience but does not replace local RMV offices. Users must complete the renewal process and have the updated registration and decal in hand before the expiration date.

Please note, this service is only available for renewals within the same community. If you have moved and not updated your APO address or license plates, you are ineligible for this service and may be in violation of regulations.

For more information, visit the RMV website at https:// www.europeafrica.army.mil/ Community/Registry-of-MotorVehicles/ or contact your local RMV office.

Chabelley Airfield adds on-site firearms training capability

CHABELLEY AIRFIELD, DJIBOUTI

— Chabelley Airfield marked a major operational milestone with the opening of its small arms range, a $1.6 million project that significantly expands on-site training capacity and operational flexibility for U.S. and partner forces.

Prior to the range’s completion, U.S., allied and partner personnel were required to convoy to off-base training locations or wait as long as a month to access the range at Camp Lemonnier.

“With nine lanes, Chabelley has tripled our local training capacity,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Lawrence Melnicoff, 776th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron commander. “This allows American forces to qualify and sustain critical skills on site while reducing exposure associated with off-base movements.”

Completed four months ahead of schedule, the range provides a dedicated capability for small arms qualification, sustainment training and forward-deployed mission rehearsals. The project supports the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing and 449th Air Expeditionary Group mission by enabling forces to train locally using shared tactics, techniques and procedures.

Supporting distributed, austere and expeditionary operations across the region, Chabelley Airfield plays a critical role in enabling forward operations. According to Melnicoff, the new range directly supports that mission set.

“This capability gives us the ability to conduct skills shoots and rehearse concepts here before deploying forward for combat operations,” Melnicoff said. “Training in the same environment where we operate matters.”

A civil engineer project manager assigned to the project said early coordination and strict quality

control were critical to completing the range ahead of schedule, particularly given Chabelley’s limited space and proximity to active flight operations.

“One of our biggest challenges was identifying a suitable location, since land at Chabelley is extremely limited,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Arvin Tena, 776th EABS Civil Engineer project manager. “We also worked with local contractors who were unfamiliar with American construction standards, especially for concrete walls and pads. Constant, hands-on supervision and on-the-spot quality control allowed us to maintain standards and avoid rework.”

The civil engineering team coordinated closely with the contractors, airfield operations and base security to minimize delays, maximize quality of work and deconflict with active runway operations.

Quality assurance measures included soil compaction testing, concrete slump tests and material certifications to ensure the range met ballistic protection requirements.

Melnicoff emphasized the range’s broader impact on force protection and long-term operations at Chabelley Airfield.

“This is Djibouti’s premier range and a key investment in credible deterrence,” he said. “Immediate-response training is now tied directly to Chabelley’s actual threat environment, which strengthens force protection and coalition integration.”

The range is part of a series of efforts aimed at enabling Chabelley Airfield to self-sustain core military functions while supporting 13 joint and allied partners operating from the installation.

“This range compresses the readiness loop, hardens force protection and anchors Chabelley as a credible, self-sustaining operational node,” Melnicoff said.

512 Field Hospital tests casualty movement, deployment readiness during field training exercise

Soldiers assigned to the 512th Field Hospital trained to move wounded troops across Europe during a recent field training exercise, testing casualty evacuation procedures across extended distances during largescale combat operations.

The 512th Field Hospital is subordinate to the 519th Hospital Center, 30th Medical Brigade, and executed the training to maintain hospital-level care while transporting patients over long distances.

SWORD 26, the U.S. Army’s multinational exercise series formerly known as DEFENDEREurope, focuses on rapid deployment, interoperability with NATO allies, and sustaining forces across the European theater. Medical support plays a critical role in preserving combat power.

Medical teams rehearsed long-distance casualty movement, coordinated with hostnation support partners, and maintained care from the point of injury through evacuation.

Training occurred in two phases. The first tested core procedures and equipment. The second phase challenged medical teams to adapt treatment methods while working with limited supplies.

“The first phase is proof of concept, and the second phase is our innovation phase where we’re trying things we haven’t done before,” said Army Capt. Bethany Blankenship, executive officer and lead planner for the 512th Field Hospital. “They told us they want us to get creative with how we would treat patients’ long term with minimal supplies and resources.”

Soldiers convoyed from Rhine Ordnance Barracks to Sembach Kaserne and back, moving nine vehicles in the medical convoy and additional transport for personnel. In total, 208 Soldiers from the 512th Field Hospital and the 519th Hospital Center participated.

“We’re moving 100 percent of our equipment by ourselves,” Blankenship said. “The field hospital is doctrinally supposed to move 30 percent of its equipment. We’re moving all of it.”

Planners established a 32-bed field hospital expandable to 48 beds. Capabilities included two operating rooms, intensive care, intermediate care wards, and emergency medical treatment, along with pharmacy, laboratory, dental, and medical logistics support.

Future large-scale combat operations may involve extended evacuation timelines, increasing the importance of prolonged field care.

“If we’re simulating a war environment, we expect mostly trauma patients,” Blankenship said. “We’re expecting gunshot wounds, head injuries, amputations, and then a few loweracuity injuries.”

Patients are triaged in the emergency medical treatment area before being moved to surgery, intensive care, or intermediate care. Stabilized patients can then be prepared for evacuation and onward transport.

Col. Crystal L. Belew, commander of the 519th Hospital Center, said exercises like this help identify risks before they affect real-world operations.

“This is the time to test those capabilities

and identify the gaps and risks associated with them, not during the time of war,” Belew said. “We need to identify the challenges, the power sources we need, and the types of patients that are safe to move on this platform.”

Training also included coordination with host-nation support partners along potential evacuation routes. “We need to identify the resources our host nations may be able to provide along a long evacuation route,” Belew said.

Planning revealed friction points, including changes to medical supply ordering procedures and generator licensing requirements that required additional training before movement.

“We should have started PMCS and planning much earlier than we did,” Blankenship said. “There are a lot more preexercise training requirements than people realize.”

Belew said the exercise reinforces the role of Army medical teams in sustaining troops during combat.

“We are here, we will care for them, and we will get them home,” she said.

OSTERN (EASTER) WEEKEND

APRIL 3 – 6, GERMANY-WIDE

Both Good Friday (April 3) and Easter Monday (April 6) are national holidays in Germany and many other European countries, based on a religious background. All stores and public offices are closed in observance of the occasion. Most stores will be open on Saturday.

ABC IN KMC: Easter Eggstasy

Decorating Easter eggs is a cherished tradition across Europe. But each country has its unique customs and styles, that may decisively vary.

According to a Lenten tradition, in Medieval Europe the consumption of eggs was forbidden during the 40-day period of fasting leading up to Easter. But since chickens continued to lay eggs, they were boiled or preserved to prevent them from spoiling. When Easter arrived, these eggs were then decorated and eaten as part of the celebration.

In Germany, the tradition of decorating Easter eggs is known as “Ostereier bemalen.” A common custom is that families come together and paint eggs with vibrant colors. Some techniques include dyeing, painting and using wax resistant methods to come up with astonishing patterns. Eggs are often used to decorate “Easter trees” or “Ostereierbäume” that can be found in village squares or private front yards.

A popular sport during the season is “Ostereierschiessen” (Easter egg shooting). But no worries, contestants shoot at paper goals marked with Easter figures or eggs with the aim of hitting as many “eggs” as possible. Each successful shot brings about a real egg and the winner of a whole tournament is crowned as the “Schützenkönig” (archer king).

In France, Easter egg decoration is less elaborate but still significant. Eggs are hand-painted with various designs, often reflecting spring themes like flowers, animals, and cheerful colors.

Another technique is decoupage: Decorative paper or fabric pieces are glued

onto the eggs to create beautiful, textured designs. This technique allows for a wide range of artistic expression. Natural dyeing is also popular using materials such as onion skins, beetroot and spinach to achieve natural colors, often combined with leaf or flower imprints for additional decoration.

As in the United States and large parts of Europe, Easter egg hunts are a popular activity in England. Decorated real eggs or ones made from chocolate are hidden in gardens and parks. Some larger events take place in historic estates and contestants can win prizes for finding the most eggs.

Egg rolling is also a popular and fun tradition, played in some areas in England. Hard-boiled eggs are rolled down a hill or across a field and the goal is to see whose egg rolls the farthest without breaking.

In Poland, decorated eggs are called “pisanki.” They are made using a waxresist technique or by painting intricate designs directly onto the eggs. Traditional designs often include geometric patterns, flowers, and religious symbols.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, decorating Easter eggs is an important tradition known as “kraslice.” The eggs are often decorated using a variety of techniques, such as painting, dyeing, and using wax or straw to create intricate designs. Traditional kraslice designs include geometric patterns, floral motifs, and symbolic images.

A special technique using straw is common where thin pieces are cut into shapes and glued onto the egg to form patterns. This technique requires precision and patience to create intricate, symmetrical designs. Eggs can also be etched, where they are first dyed in a dark color and then designs are etched into the shell using

eggs, or “pysanky,” is a highly revered and intricate craft. Pysanky are created using a wax-resistant method, where beeswax is applied to the egg in patterns, and then the egg is dyed multiple times in different colors. The wax is melted off to reveal the final, multicolored design. Each symbol and color used in pysanky has a specific meaning, often related to nature, faith, and folklore. Appliqué is a further tradition: In some regions, eggs are decorated by applying tiny pieces of fabric, lace, or other materials to the surface, creating a textured and colorful design.

In Russia, Easter egg decoration is a significant cultural practice, with some of the most elaborate and artistic techniques, such as pysanky. Eggs are decorated with beeswax patterns, dyed in stages, and then the wax is melted off to reveal intricate designs. Russian pysanky often feature geometric patterns, religious symbols, and motifs from nature. This can include religious icons, floral motifs, and traditional Russian patterns. Some eggs are painted with detailed scenes from cultural stories.

a sharp tool. This method creates delicate, white patterns against the dyed background. The eggs are used in Easter celebrations and cherished as precious gifts.

Hungarian Easter eggs are known as “hímestojás” and are traditionally decorated using various techniques, including painting, dyeing, and etching. The designs often feature intricate floral patterns, religious symbols, and motifs inspired by Hungarian folk art. The eggs are sometimes given as gifts or used in Easter games and festivities.

In Greece, Easter eggs are typically dyed a deep red color to symbolize the blood of Christ. The eggs are then blessed during church services and used in the traditional game of “tsougrisma,” where participants tap their eggs against each other to see whose egg remains uncracked.

In the Ukraine, the art of decorating

Last, but not least: Fabergé Eggs. Though not a traditional Easter egg decoration technique, the luxurious Fabergé eggs are world-famous. Created by the House of Fabergé for the Russian Imperial family, these eggs were crafted from precious metals and gemstones, featuring exquisite craftsmanship and elaborate designs. Each Fabergé egg often contained hidden surprises or miniature scenes.

Each of these traditions reflect the cultural heritage and artistic expression of the region, making Easter egg decorating a vibrant and meaningful part of European celebrations.

If you’re interested in learning and experiencing more about traditional egg decorating techniques, there is a series of Easter egg markets in historical monasteries where international artists will demonstrate their crafts. See “Unterwegs” for details and dates.

A veterinarian’s unconventional path to service

For some, the path to service is a straight line, for Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz, veterinarian and officer in charge of the Baumholder Veterinary Treatment Facility it had its twists and turns.

Maj. Paulynne Bellen took an unconventional path to her commission, entering the U.S. Army at an age when many are well-established in their careers. Her journey involved leaving a corporate job to return to school at 34, driven by a lifelong goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Originally from the Philippines, Bellen developed an early interest in animal care, often rescuing and rehabilitating injured animals she found. At 20 years old, Bellen moved to the United States with her sister and began a career as a staffing coordinator in New Jersey. However, her ambition to work with animals persisted, so she volunteered at an animal shelter.

At 34, she made the decision to pursue her original dream. The choice meant starting over academically and financially, a risk she fully accepted.

“I gave everything, I had no safety net,” Bellen stated. “I pulled my 401K and quit my career. Giving up was not an option.”

Before applying to veteri-

nary school, she gained international experience by volunteering with World Vets for two years in Nicaragua and Ecuador. Her commitment resulted in acceptances to ten veterinary schools. She ultimately attended The Ohio State University, earning both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Master of Public Health.

The idea of joining the Army had always lingered in the back of her mind, partly inspired by her brother who had been passionate about enlisting but never got the chance. While it was not her primary plan, it remained a possibility. After earning her veterinary degree, she sought new experiences and applied for a non-appropriated fund veterinary position on a military installation.

The interview for the NAF job proved to be a pivotal moment. The interviewing military veterinarian pointed out that at 39, her time to commission as an Army veterinarian was limited. She was presented with a choice: take the civilian position or enlist.

She chose the latter, commissioning in 2018 after making the decision in 2017. Her recruiter, Sgt. 1st Class (ret.) Erica Rough, provided crucial support and they remain in contact.

“I call her on my good days and I call her on my bad days,” Bellen said. “Joining the military just felt right for the very first time and she

made it happen.”

Since joining in 2019, Bellen’s assignments have included stops like First-Year Graduate Veterinary Education at Fort Bragg and being the officer in charge of the Naples Veterinary Treatment Facility at Naval Support Activity in Naples, Italy. She now serves as the OIC in Baumholder, and is slated to move to Korea to become the 106th Medical Detachment Veterinary Service Support Chief of Operations.

“It’s a full circle moment,” she noted. “I moved from Asia to the U.S. and now I’m heading back to Asia to continue my service.”

Bellen describes her military service as a positive experience defined by its dynamic nature and sense of community.

“The Army is an experience for me,” she said. “I love the people, the travel and my job. It’s exciting and you never really know what’s next.”

She identifies the collaborative spirit as a key component of her satisfaction with Army life.

“The best part of the Army is that we all come together and support each other,” she explained. “We laugh through the tough times and come out stronger.”

Reflecting on her journey, Bellen believes the service has helped her grow personally and professionally. “The Army pushes you to discover a potential you never knew you had,” she concluded.

Riding High: Meet the Military’s last remaining Mounted Color Guard

For the individuals who serve in the Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard, every day is a test of composure, discipline and adaptability — essential skills they demonstrate alongside wild palominos that were specifically domesticated for the job.

These Marines are unique in that they're the last mounted color guard remaining in the military.

“The unit perseveres because it consistently demonstrates value: connecting the American public to the Corps’ legacy while constantly reinforcing Marine professionalism and core values,” explained Marine Corps Capt. Elizabeth Kemp, the unit’s officer in charge.

Based at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow in California’s Mojave Desert, the Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard allows a few dedicated Marines the rare but honorable opportunity to present the service’s colors and U.S. flag on horseback at military-related parades, ceremonies, commemorations, civic events, and other activities.

Their work is a show of dignity and respect for those who have served the nation, but being selected for the role itself is also considered an honor.

“Marines are entrusted with representing the Corps’ history, traditions and standards in front of national and international audiences,” Kemp said. “The level of trust and confidence embedded in the unit’s core, coupled with the [increased] visibility, makes this a

prestigious assignment for all Marines who serve here.”

Dedication, Reliability Required

The mounted unit consists of a senior Marine who carries the U.S. flag, known as the color sergeant; a Marine who carries the Marine Corps colors; and two rifle bearers.

Any mid-level enlisted Marine from any career field can be selected for the role. They must possess an outstanding professional reputation and a high level of physical fitness, discipline and reliability. Candidates are screened for maturity, attention to detail and their ability to represent the Corps at the highest level.

And if you’re a Marine who doesn’t know much about horses, that's not a problem. Kemp said many qualified Marines come to the stables with little to no experience in horsemanship or ranch operations.

“What matters most is character, work ethic and the ability to learn quickly while operating as part of a team,” she said. “Prior experience is beneficial, but is far less important than discipline, patience, humility and commitment.”

Marines selected for the prestigious role spend hours working with the base’s civilian horse trainer to learn maintenance and how to ride, as well as all the duties required to work on a ranch.

High-Level Performances

The mounted unit is invited to all sorts of events, including the famed New Year’s Day Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. The unit

has appeared in every iteration of the parade since 1990, and it's had the honor of leading it several times as the first military unit.

The unit also takes part in rodeos, which can help with recruiting efforts.

“Rodeos combine high energy, unpredictable environments and large crowds. Performing in this setting highlights the Marines’ ability to stay composed, disciplined and professional under pressure — skills that translate well beyond ceremonial contexts,” Kemp said.

The Mounted Color Guard is currently on tour at various rodeos throughout Texas until March 7.

The team mostly performs in the western U.S. However, in 2024, it made its first trek to the East Coast in about a decade. They presented the colors at the Preakness Stakes, participated in the National Memorial Day Parade and visited various historical sites, including the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

The unit also works with public schools, including through the Junior ROTC and the Young Marines Program. The team used to participate in competitions in the 1980s and 1990s, where they received several national awards; however, they no longer do so because of military regulations.

From Wild and Free to Tame and Disciplined

Another unique aspect of the job is that these active-duty Marines ride wild palominos adopted from the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro

Adoption Program, which protects wild equines on public lands. When there are too many animals to manage, the bureau finds qualified private care for them through adoption or sales.

According to the color guard's website, stablemen initially found the wild horses on their own and trained them. But a chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association eventually got involved and started the process of adopting the horses through the bureau. That eventually became the official process.

Adopted horses are tamed and progressively trained to meet the unit’s performance standards. They’re then slowly integrated into ceremonial presentations. Kemp said the horses are handled with a strong emphasis on safety and welfare by trainers and experienced stablemen.

Developing Ready, Lethal Marines

Kemp said the unit directly supports Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's focus on readiness and lethality by developing Marines who are disciplined, adaptable and can represent the force with credibility.

“It strengthens recruiting, public trust and institutional pride, all of which directly support the Marine Corps' ability to attract and retain high-quality warfighters,” she said.

The Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard received its official designation in November 1968. The Army, the only other branch with dedicated mounted color guards, deactivated its last unit in 2023.

The Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard marches at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., Jan. 1. Marine musicians from across the West Coast came together to perform during the annual parade to celebrate the new year with parade floats, marching bands and equestrian units.

Al Udeid Air Base hosts Partnership Day

by Tech. Sgt. Chris Thornbury 379th Air Expeditionary Wing

AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar — The 379th Air Expeditionary Wing hosted a Partnership Day at Al Udeid Air Base, Feb. 11.

The event showcased interoperability and appreciation for host nation partners, bringing together Qatari military members, families, U.S. Embassy Doha representatives, joint U.S. service members and coalition forces.

“This is our chance to open the gates, show off our capabilities, and — more importantly — build a closer relationship with our Qatari hosts,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Olivia Moss, 379th AEW host nation coordination cell director. “At the end of the day, we work better when we aren’t just ‘counterparts,’ but a united team that understands the people and culture we’re working alongside.”

At Al Udeid AB, Qataris and Americans work together to generate combat airpower.

The very aircraft used to operate out of Al Udeid to support operations within the area of responsibility were set up as static displays, including the Qatar Emiri Air Force

F-15 Eagle, C-17A Globemaster III, AH-64 Apache, and U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker.

“Today, as we gather on the flightline surrounded by the impressive aircraft and equipment that symbolize our shared capabilities, we are reminded of the enduring partnership between the United States and Qatar,” said U.S. Embassy Doha Chargé d’Affaires Mo Barghouty.

“As we enjoy the static displays and demonstrations, let us remember that our greatest strength lies in our unity and shared purpose.”

Attendees were able to share moments and foster camaraderie over music, games and immersive displays. The 379th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron and 379th Expeditionary Medical Squadron also showcased their capabilities through military working dog and medical evacuation demonstrations, respectively.

“I feel honored and grateful for the opportunity to organize an event that strengthens the relationship with our host nation partners,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Training for tomorrow: Ramstein Airmen sharpen readiness during Radiant Falcon

Airman Ayden Helregel, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental flight technician, demonstrates the use of a contaminant detection device during exercise Radiant Falcon at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 12. Airmen from various squadrons participated in simulated scenarios where they were responsible for conducting safety surveys of an assigned aircraft that was potentially contaminated with radiation, and safely decontaminating both the aircraft and the Airmen involved.

Senior Airman Renan Arredondo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron, the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management flight, and the 86th Airlift Wing safety office, participated in exercise Radiant Falcon to obtain and strengthen proficiency in radiological contamination detection and decontamination safety techniques Feb. 12, at Ramstein Air Base. This exercise integrated hands-on training to bolster response capabilities within a simulated radiological contamination scenario involving an aircraft. The objective: to guarantee mission continuity while safeguarding personnel through efficient radiation detection and control.

“We’re trying to simplify how to assess an aircraft for radiation and contamination,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Andrew Wagner, U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa surgeon general bioenvironmental branch chief. “These exercises allow us to relay information to commanders on the ground to better understand the risk associated with the mission and the health of the Airmen who are executing the mission.”

The methodical training began with comprehensive planning sessions and safety guidelines to lay the foundation for working within the field. Airmen assessed radiation safety principles and protocols before transitioning to scenarios that took them step by step in a controlled environment. Midway through the course, participants utilized their training in practical field conditions, reinforcing the importance of coordination

between units and cultivating decision-making under pressure.

“The purpose of this exercise is to run through some of the plans or processes associated with the detonation of a nuclear weapon and if an aircraft were to fly through that plume,” said Senior Airman Eugene Chambers, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management journeyman. “If maintainers are going out to receive that aircraft, what are they exposed to, what are the processes that they need to go through to stay safe, what PPE do they need to wear, how are they getting out of their gear, how are they getting out of that without spreading contamination?”

Radiant Falcon is a continued training exercise that USAFE-AFRICA leadership promotes in the interest of developing and expanding the scope of training of Mission Ready Airmen within different career fields. Each scenario practiced during Radiant Falcon focuses on the original objective of safeguarding the force and ensuring mission success. “It's moderately important to train for things, even if you hope they never are required,” states Chambers. “Hopefully there isn't a nuclear detonation in our area of responsibility, but in the event that there is, we've at least practiced the processes required for receiving aircraft that have been exposed to those types of environments.”

Key responders and maintenance personnel applied electronic radiation dosimeters capable of measuring exposure and identifying potential contamination onto the aircraft. Bioenvironmental technicians then gave health risk assessments and situational observations to commanders to direct mission decisions.

Airman 1st Class Ceara Williams, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental flight technician, discusses hypothetical operational strategies with Senior Airman Eugene Chambers, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management journeyman, during exercise Radiant Falcon at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 12. The exercise was used to establish a baseline of how Airmen would respond to radiological contamination events.
U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Allyson Peterson, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental flight officer in charge, discusses hypothetical decontamination procedures with Airman 1st Class Ceara Williams, 86th OMRS bioenvironmental flight technician, during exercise Radiant Falcon at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 12. Airmen from various squadrons participated in the extensive training exercise to acquire and hone proficiency in radiological contamination detection and decontamination safety techniques.

Wagner states, “The primary idea is health risk assessment and being able to tell the commander; ‘Here’s a situation. You can turn this aircraft, and here’s what people will be exposed to and you accept the risk of the Airman’s health to look at it at the risk of the mission as well.”

Training hand in hand with several squadrons gave participants a larger understanding of how their roles play into the larger mission. Radiant Falcon also unveiled opportunities for future growth and highlighted the importance of collaboration and broader communication.

“Being able to work well with other flights was really good to see. You're so tunnel visioned when doing your job, but it’s important to know what other people are capable of doing,” said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Allyson Peterson, 86th OMRS bioenvironmental flight readiness and training officer in charge.

Exercises like Radiant Falcon are crucial and fundamental to accelerating the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission readiness capabilities, interoperability across Ramstein, and bolstering the capability to face chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear threats. Through constant and in-depth training, Ramstein Airmen continuously refine the skillset needed to counter and adapt to any contingency — safeguarding the mission, the people, and the European Theatre.

Senior Airman Devin Rogers, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron readiness non-commissioned officer in charge, discusses his proposed decontamination and response procedures with the participants of exercise

a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear focused exercise that aims at enhancing the readiness capabilities of bioenvironmental, safety, civil engineering, and emergency management personnel when it comes to detecting radiation contamination.

TiC 2.0 meets medical care during Spartan Focus

As the U.S. Army’s leading Transformation in Contact 2.0 unit, the 3rd Infantry Division takes every opportunity to use innovation to increase lethality, precision, and maximize efficiency to exceed today’s modern warfare capabilities. Innovation doesn’t stop at tanks and weapon systems; it plays a role in every aspect of the battlefield, including medical care.

“The 703rd is known as the beating heart of Sparta, and we’re living up to our nickname in the field exercise,” said U.S. Army Maj. Patrick Smith, the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion Executive Officer. “We’re using the Tactical Resupply Vehicle, a resupply unmanned aircraft system. Our medics have been trained and certified in launching, flying, and landing it.”

The TRV-150 has, until recently, been mainly used to carry supplies and equipment. During Spartan Focus, the 703rd BSB operated the TRV-150 more efficiently by using it to transport blood to three different training locations in Fort Stewart, drastically

U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division conduct a blood transport exercise as part of Spartan Focus at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Feb. 14. reducing the time it would normally take to provide potentially lifesaving care on the battlefield. The drone is designed to provide rapid resupply in high-risk environments while reducing Soldiers’ exposure to enemy threat.

“We’re trying to find methods that are survivable, that are precise and that are responsive to the folks that are on the front line,” said Smith. “The blood delivery is an example of distributed logistics where our medics in one location will upload this payload of blood and fly it 600 feet in the air, at a speed of about 70 mph either the point of need, or to another node where it can be stored for future use.”

A system which historically consists of landing a helicopter on the front lines and evacuating casualties to receive medical treatment, has now tested and confirmed the ability to deliver blood via TRV-150. This heavy-lift unmanned drone can deliver up to 150 lbs of supplies within 43 miles, and at a speed of 67 mph.

The integration of the TRV-150 into medical care tactics as part of TiC 2.0 introduces a new capability for Combat Medic Specialists. Medics are being trained to operate the system independently, ensuring aerial resupply operations can be

conducted seamlessly even in the absence of dedicated drone operators.

“Not only is it important to know how this system operates, but how we load and unload while we’re using as payloads; whether it’s blood or other medical supplies,” said U.S. Army 1st. Lt. Edgardo Rivera Marcano, 2nd ABCT’s Brigade Medical Supply Officer. “The medics need to know how those classes are supplied, how they are loaded, how they operate, and what the capabilities are of the system we are using.”

The rapid advancement of TiC 2.0 demands parallel progress across all warfighting functions, including medical care. Incorporating innovative capabilities ensures units meet emerging operational standards and maintain the ability to sustain forces in large-scale combat environments.

“We’re moving into largescale combat operations. Before, we would rely on ambulance backhaul where we would return patients back to their units with medical equipment,” said Rivera Mercano. “Now, those operations would not be in a timely manner, so innovations like this would facilitate how we deliver care and supplies to people on the front lines.”

former industrial belt. Essen is compact, easy to navigate, and packed with history that doesn’t feel dusty. Plus, it feels authentically German without being overly touristy.

Here are five must-sees for your trip to Essen.

1. Zollverein

If you do only one thing in Essen, make it Zollverein. This former coal mine and coking plant is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and it’s stunning.

It’s hard to believe that a coal mine can be beautiful. But this one kind of is. Zollverein’s Bauhaus-inspired architecture turns heavy industry into art. Wander the massive grounds, climb the Ruhr Museum escalator (yes, that glowing orange one), and take in panoramic views from the roof.

Inside, visitors can experience the geological, industrial, and cultural history of the region in a way that’s immersive and unexpectedly engaging. There’s also the Red Dot Design Museum, rotating exhibitions, and seasonal events ranging from food festivals to open-air cinema.

Pro tip: Go in late afternoon and stay until sunset. The lighting against the steel structures is pure photography gold.

2. Grugapark

One of the biggest surprises about Essen is how green it is. And nowhere shows that off better than Grugapark.

Originally created for a garden exhibition in 1929, this sprawling park feels more like a botanical universe than a city green space. You’ll find themed gardens, tropical greenhouses, sculptures, and long walking paths that make it easy to forget you’re in the middle of a place that was once dominated by coal and steel.

In spring and summer, Grugapark is perfect for picnics. In autumn, the colors are gorgeous. And if you’re seeking a low-key Sunday activity that doesn’t involve IKEA or a shopping center, this is your spot.

Bonus: There’s a small animal enclosure and plenty of space for kids, so it’s family-friendly without feeling chaotic.

3. Villa Hügel

If Zollverein tells the story of the workers who made Germany an industrial powerhouse, Villa Hügel tells the story of the industrial elite.

Built in the late 19th century by the Krupps, one of Germany’s most powerful industrial families, this grand mansion overlooks Essen’s magnificent lake (the Baldeneysee) and feels worlds away from the gritty realities of coal mining.

Villa Hügel hosts rotating art and historical exhibitions. Outside, the landscaped garden is ideal for a relaxed stroll. You’ll kind of feel like you’ve wandered into Downton Abbey territory, but with a German industrial twist.

4. Baldeneysee Essen has a lake. And it’s a good one. Baldeneysee is the go-to spot for outdoor time when the sun comes out. Visitors can rent bikes and cycle the loop around the water, go sailing or paddleboarding, or simply grab a drink at one of the lakeside cafés.

If you’re used to German cities where water access feels limited or overly structured, Baldeneysee is refreshingly relaxed. In summer, the lake has an almost vacation-atthe-coast vibe, but without the long-distance travel.

Baldeneysee also a historic steam train and boat services that run seasonally, making it an easy way to fill most of a day.

5. Museum Folkwang

Museum Folkwang houses an impressive collection of 19th- and 20th-century art, including works by Monet, Van Gogh, and German Expressionists. The building itself is sleek and light-filled, making it an enjoyable space even if you’re not normally a museum person.

What sets Museum Folkwang apart from many other German art museums is how approachable it feels. It’s large enough to be substantial, but not so overwhelming that you need an entire day (or a survival strategy) to get through it.

Getting to Essen

By car, Essen is 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
