86 Maintenance Squadron metal technicians melt limits, shape readiness

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Inside a shop tucked away between the hangars and flightline, sparks glow bright against steel while steady hands maneuver equipment with precision. Airmen assigned to the 86th Maintenance Squadron Metals Technology Shop quietly forge the foundation of operational capabilities.

Metal technicians are responsible for fabricating, welding and machining components that help keep aeronautical ground equipment and aircraft functional. When a part is unavailable or damaged, metal techs step in to provide solutions to keep maintenance timelines moving and aircraft in the air.

“If we’re not here, a lot of other jobs slow down,” said Senior Airman Noah Dunn, 86th MXS metals technician journeyman. “Crew chiefs and other shops rely on us. We’re usually the last stop before something has to go to the depot.”

The work is technical, deliberate and often misunderstood. Welding

USAFE-AFAFRICA welcomes Bundeswehr Joint Forces Command

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jason T. Hinds, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa commander (front row, third from left), hosts members of the Bundeswehr Joint Forces Command at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 3. During the visit, members of the BwJFC engaged with USAFE-AFAFRICA officials to gain insight into U.S. counter-small, unmanned aircraft systems and integrated air and missile defense capabilities, as well as discuss future collaboration opportunities.

on aircraft is not simply striking an arc and fusing metal. It requires awareness and adherence to technical orders, approved materials and knowing the exact procedures.

“People think it’s just metal, so you can just weld it,” said Senior Airman Jordan Green, 86th MXS metals technician journeyman. “You have to know the material, the authorized filler rod, what heat settings to use and what processes are approved. Even the weld bead has to meet specific standards.”

Preparation alone can take longer than the weld itself. Areas must be cleaned, inspected and fire safety measures must be in place. In some cases, engineering approval is required before work even begins.

“Welding is mostly prep work,” said Staff Sgt. Richard Forney, 86th MXS aircraft metals technology noncommissioned officer in charge. “If you rush that part, you’ll see it in the final product.”

Forney emphasized that machining follows the same disciplined approach.

“It’s not just putting a block in a CNC machine and pressing go,” Forney said. “You have to review the program, run simulations, verify your tooling and make sure your feeds and speeds are correct. If something is off, you can break a tool or scrap materials.”

The satisfaction is evident in the finished products that leave the shop. Each completed weld and machined component represents more than craftsmanship. It showcases how one can discover strengths within themselves they did not see before.

“This job taught me that I can handle more complex procedures than I thought,” Green said. “If you stay focused and don’t overwhelm yourself, you can get through it.”

Though the Metals Technology Shop may operate away from the spotlight, its contribution is unmistakable. Every aircraft that launches from Ramstein’s runway and lands safely carries with it the work of Airmen who shaped, repaired and fabricated parts that made the mission possible.

Protecting Force through science, service

Native of San Antonio, Texas, serves as the Entomology Chief for Public Health in Europe, where his work plays a critical role in protecting the health and readiness of U.S. service members.

As a subject matter expert supporting the United States European Command region, Capt. Jordan Cornell provides assistance through vector surveillance, arthropod identification, and mitigation strategies that reduce disease risk for the warfighter.

Entomology, the study of insects and related arthropods, is a field many people rarely consider until its absence is felt. From pest control and vector-borne disease prevention to agricultural and environmental support, Cornell’s expertise spans far beyond a single specialty.

“There are so many crossover applications,” he explains. “Entomology touches more areas than people realize and it can do a lot of good.”

That passion began early. Cornell knew from a young age that he wanted to be an entomologist, even when others assumed it was a phase he would eventually outgrow. He never did. Instead, he sought out opportunities to learn more, including programs in Texas that allowed

him to work alongside entomology professionals. Asking questions in the field and seeing real-world risk mitigation solidified his decision to pursue the career.

While he always knew he wanted to serve in the Army, it wasn’t until his freshman year of college that everything aligned. Hearing military entomologists speak about

their role in public health and force protection made it clear that his two passions, science and service, could coexist.

“That’s when it clicked,” he said. “Entomology in the Army is preventative medicine. It directly impacts the lives of Soldiers.”

Cornell commissioned into the Army Medical Service Corps through Texas A&M University and later completed his master’s through Uniformed Services University. While academically challenging, he

pushed through by focusing on the mission and the people his work would ultimately protect.

“School was hard,” he admits, “but I knew I had to do it. I wouldn’t be able to help to my full potential if I didn’t push through those tough moments.”

Education remains one of his greatest passions. He frequently volunteers with schools and Department of Defense programs, sharing his knowledge and helping others understand the importance

of entomology.

“Entomology is intriguing because you can never know everything,” he said. “You’re always learning.”

Service also runs deep in his family. Cornell’s grandfather, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and Medical Service Corps officer, helped build and redesign Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. He earned a master’s degree from Texas A&M and shared a deep love of learning.

ABC IN KMC: Saarburg

Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community are well acquainted with Trier, Germany’s oldest city along the Moselle River and its Roman ruins. But, did you know that there is a small town nearby, which is a secret gem and full of charming discoveries?

Saarburg sits on the banks of the Saar River, which meets the Moselle River at Konz. The town of about 7,600 people spans both sides of the river and attracts visitors worldwide with its rich history, charming shops, cozy cafés and restaurants set within a picturesque atmosphere.

Saarburg grew up around a hilltop fortress erected by Count Siegfried of Luxembourg in 964, a foundation that anchored settlement below on the Saar River and around the little Leuk Stream. The deliberate medieval diversion of the Leuk through the town to power mills created the dramatic central waterfall and established milling as a defining feature of the townscape and local economy.

The city received formal town rights in 1291 under imperial authority. This shaped market privileges, municipal structures and fortifications. The town then developed a compact street pattern around a market square and bridges over the river. The castle acted as the seat of local lordship and administration.

When visiting Saarburg, it is best to do so on foot, so let’s take a walk! Park near the train station and stroll over the “Altstadtbrücke” towards the tunnel, with the castle and a Protestant church towering above. On the right-hand side we’ll discover riverboats waiting to take passengers on short cruises, either upstream towards Mettlach and the Saarschleife (Saar loop) or downstream towards Trier.

Staden and bells

Passing by the riverboats, we’ll reach

cream parlor, a nostalgic café and stores with home decorations.

Buttermarkt and the Leuk Stream

Passing through a left-hand archway brings us to the Buttermarkt, the town’s bustling main attraction, where restaurants, pubs and shops occupy historic buildings and attract visitors from around the world. Time to take a break with an ice-cream or coffee, hunt for souvenirs, with shops often open on Sundays. We may even strike up a conversation with a table neighbor speaking French, Dutch, Italian or with a New Zealand accent. The quaint market along the Leuk Stream, lined with seasonal flower displays is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

A charming pedestrian bridge crosses directly above the waterfall, which plunges about 20 meters (65 feet) and once powered three historic mills, with Amüseum, a small local museum, just around the corner.

Hackenberger Mühle and the mill museum

nal chapel was destroyed, the church contains interior treasures such as the late-Gothic Grape Madonna dating to around 1500 and stained-glass windows that flood the nave with a golden glow when sunlight shines through.

Laurentiusberg

Continuing our walk, this time rather steep downhill, we’ll pass by the mill museum and a few quaint houses. Some of the localities along the way have backyard sitting areas where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view over the river and the countryside beyond. At the very end the Leuk flows into the Saar River, ending our walking adventure. Or, hop on the “Saartalbahn,” an enjoyable train ride that leads visitors around the town with a treasure chest full of historical insight. You can also walk the “Stolpersteine” (stumble stones) trail to commemorate Jews that lived in Saarburg in the early 1900’s: https://stolpersteine.in-saarburg.de/lageplan/

Staden, a historic area with very narrow medieval houses, a cozy maritime pub and the former family-owned Mabillon foundry. Bells were cast at the historic foundry in Saarburg for over 230 years until the end of 2002. The Mabillon family permanently settled in Saarburg in 1770, but the tradition of bell casting dates back to the 16th century.

The craft is still being revived today through special projects. In 2023, a peace bell was cast that was created as part of the “all4peace” peace project and is one of three peace bells in the border triangle of Germany, Luxembourg, and France, intended to commemorate peace and human dignity.

The Glockengießerei is now a museum and cultural center called “Kulturgiesserei” (cultural foundry) that offers guided tours, concerts and other social events along with a small café.

Each year in mid-December the center hosts a Victorian Christmas Market with steampunk and actors in traditional costume of the days.

Left, right or straight ahead

Continuing on through the tunnel, we’ll make our next exciting discoveries! First, we’ll find a traffic circle, lovingly redecorated every two to three months, depending on the season. And, also a vineyard on steep Warsberg (hill) in the middle of town!

At this point we have several options: If we take a sharp right, we can walk up to the castle ruins for a magnificent view. Following the road to the right, we’ll hit upon the chairlift leading up to Warsberg, to discover a restaurant, a summer toboggan run, a Dutch vacation center and a spectacular view over the town and surroundings.

Another option is climbing up the hill on the steep walkway leading through the vineyard, or maybe taking this way down instead. The last choice is going to the left along GrafSiegfried-Strasse, the main shopping street with a multitude of fashion shops, an ice-

Standing on the pedestrian bridge, there is a great view of the best-known mill complex Hackenberger Mühle at the bottom of the waterfall. Most of the buildings visible today date from later centuries but rest on medieval milling tradition. Large external waterwheels and internal gearing transmitted power up into the mill rooms where millstones, belts and ancillary machinery performed successive stages of processing. Traditional mill operations ceased in the 1970s, but the Mühlenmuseum explains traditional milling techniques. Exhibits include original gears, grinding stones, the belt drive system, and educational displays or short films showing the “from grain to flour” process.

Ice sculptures and a Grape Madonna

Beyond the bridge, a sharp left by the Amüseum reveals a sweeping view of the waterfall, its thunderous roar reverberating for meters. The waterfall froze twice in recent years, in 2012 and again during the cold spell of winter 2017–2018, a rare event that turns the cascade into spectacular ice sculptures.

St Laurentius on the right is the Roman Catholic parish church that shapes Saarburg’s skyline alongside the castle, built on the site of a medieval chapel and today protected as a cultural monument. Rebuilt in 1854 after the origi-

Festivals and fun

Saarburg is also known for its lively calendar of fun-filled events. A Fastnacht parade takes place during the season, the city offers a Spring Fair on March 29, and the Markttage (market days) in early July with live music and more around the town. A wine fest at Staden is in early September with torch swimmers and fireworks, “Goldener Oktober,” an artisan and farmers’ market takes place mid-month, as well as a Christmas Market at Buttermarkt during the holiday season. A further attraction is a virtual reality tour on an electric coach that can be booked via the city’s tourist info site and a bird of prey park just outside the town.

Klein, aber fein (small but precious) as Germans say, Saarburg is well worth a day trip and may even inspire you to visit again!

USAG RheinlandPfalz Baumholder youth sports program

celebrates a year of growth, community spirit

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Child and Youth Services sports and fitness program delivered an exceptional year expanding opportunities for youth and strengthening connections across the military community. Through the dedication of staff and volunteer coaches, the program delivered high-quality programming to military families across the RheinlandPfalz footprint, with a strong focus on the Baumholder community.

Led by new volunteer instructors, CYS introduced additional activities and hosted large-scale events that energized the community. The program added Jiu Jitsu to its sports catalog, providing Baumholder youth with a new and engaging athletic outlet. CYS also

launched signature events, including the “Youth Spartan Challenge,” an obstacle course competition that attracted more than 200 participants and spectators from Baumholder and Kaiserslautern.

In the fall, the program welcomed the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts Cheer team, drawing more than 250 community members to an interactive clinic and high-energy performance that provided young athletes with a unique engagement opportunity. Participants also had the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with the famous mascot “Blue.”

Marcel Fisher, CYS youth and sports fitness director, said the sports program plays an important role in supporting military families and overall readiness.

“Our youth sports and fitness program provides young athletes a positive outlet beyond school

and home,” Fisher said. “It gives them opportunities to build confidence, develop friendships and grow through competition, while families connect and support one another.”

Fisher emphasized that volunteers remain essential to the program’s success, noting their leadership and mentorship shape both athletic ability and character development.

Volunteer coaches reinforced that message.

“Balancing my responsibilities as an active duty along with coaching this season provided a sense of stability amidst the intense operational demands of 2025,” said Sgt. 1st Class Eric Blue, volunteer coach and activeduty Soldier. “Mentoring these young athletes allowed me to step away from the rigors of active duty and rediscover a sense of peace through their

pure enthusiasm for the game.”

Parents and coaches echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering life skills and building community in a small, remote overseas location.

“It can be challenging to live in a small community, but youth sports have helped my kids stay active and involved,” said Julia Powell, a volunteer coach and parent. “Sports teach really great life skills like consistency, confidence, perseverance, and resilience that carry over into everyday life.”

Bryce Pappas, a volunteer coach, added that youth sports create meaningful opportunities for connection.

Inaugural meeting of RheinlandPfalz Silver Caduceus Society

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, director of Defense Health Network Europe and 21st Chief of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, was guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of the Rheinland-Pfalz Silver Caduceus Society held Feb. 10 at the Sembach Chapel. The inaugural event marked the beginning of an informal forum dedicated to the growth, mentorship, and professional development of U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officers serving throughout the Rheinland-Pfalz region in Germany.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, director of Defense Health Network Europe and 21st Chief of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, was guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of the RheinlandPfalz Silver Caduceus Society held Feb. 10 at the Sembach Chapel.

The inaugural event marked the begin-

ning of an informal forum dedicated to the growth, mentorship, and professional development of U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officers serving throughout the RheinlandPfalz region in Germany.

The origins of the Silver Caduceus Society can be traced back to the Republic of Korea, where Army Medical Service Corps officers organized the first chapter in September 1967.

The U.S. Army Medical Service Corps consists of more than 8,000 active-duty, National

Guard, and Reserve officers. As a critical part of the Army Medical Department, these officers provide administrative, clinical, and scientific support for Army health services, working across garrison and deployed environments.

The U.S. Army Medical Service Corps is the most diverse branch of the AMEDD and consists of four multi-functional areas comprised of twenty-three areas of concentration, and four Additional Skill Identifiers. MSC Officers serve within the areas of Administrative

Health Services, Medical Allied Sciences, Preventive Medicine Sciences, Behavioral Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, Podiatry, Aeromedical Evacuation, or Health Services Maintenance Technicians (e.g. Warrant Officers).

Today, various chapters of the Silver Caduceus Society serve as a professional development, mentoring, and networking organization for Army Medical Service Corps officers in the continental United States and overseas.

Leading transformation: USU faculty, students chart path for AI in military medicine

USU faculty and the School of Medicine Class of 2027 co-authored a roadmap for military medical education in an era of rapid digital transformation.

As the speed of medical discovery continues to accelerate — with global medical knowledge now doubling every few months — the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is ensuring its graduates are not just keeping pace, but leading.

A recent article in Military Medicine, titled “Transforming Military Healthcare Education and Training: AI Integration for Future Readiness,” provides a definitive roadmap for this evolution.

Led by Air Force Lt. Col. (Dr.) Justin Peacock, associate dean for Research, and Dr. Rebekah Cole, acting assistant dean for Academic Success, both in USU’s School of Medicine, the article provides a collaborative review of how to strategically integrate artificial intelligence literacy into the core of military medical education.

USU co-authors joining Peacock and Cole include Air Force Lt. Col. (Dr.) Joshua Duncan, Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics, Dr. Anita Samuel, Department of Health Professions Education, and Class of 2027 School of Medicine students Air Force 2nd Lt. Brandon Jensen, and Army 2nd Lt. Brad Snively. Peacock

also serves as faculty in the Department of Radiology, and Cole in the Departments of Military and Emergency Medicine and Health Professions Education.

Preparing for the AI-driven battlefield

The publication arrives at a pivotal time for the Military Health System. USU leaders anticipate future conflicts are expected to take place in increasingly complex, far-forward operational environments where AI-enabled tools will be essential for casualty care and decision support.

“The goal isn’t to make physicians AI experts,” the authors state, “but to train them to effectively use AI’s capabilities to improve patient care, diagnosis, and operational medicine.”

Cole emphasizes that the strategy requires a multi-layered approach. “This paper lays out a practical roadmap for how medical education can evolve — beginning with faculty development, expanding through student engagement, and strengthened by partnerships with industry — to responsibly integrate AI throughout the curriculum,” Cole says. “This approach supports competency-based medical education and ensures our students are prepared for the realities of modern healthcare delivery.”

This approach aligns with USU’s broader mission to produce “future-ready” clinicians. The roadmap addresses the integration of AI from the first year of medical school through graduate medical education, focusing on ethical use, technical literacy, and practical application at the point of care.

The “student-centered” revolution What sets this transformation apart is the active role of USU students in shaping the curriculum. Jensen and Snively’s involvement underscores a university-wide shift toward co-creating educational tools that meet the needs of the next generation of military clinicians.

For Jensen, AI is already a daily reality in the classroom and the clinic. “I use AI every single day,” Jensen says. “It can make complex topics significantly easier to understand and frame difficult concepts in ways that are easier to remember. I also use AI to generate practice questions and flashcards, which has made my studying more efficient and personalized.”

Jensen’s experience extends beyond the library. During an internal medicine rotation, he used AI to broaden his clinical reasoning — an approach that helped identify an important diagnosis that might have otherwise been overlooked.

While Jensen brings a focus on diagnostic precision, Snively emphasizes the “behind-thescenes” power of AI — specifically how it acts as a high-speed clinical assistant that handles the heavy lifting of data organization, allowing medical students and residents to focus more on the patient.

Snively highlighted AI’s value in generating summary tables from complex data, crucial for quickly processing patient history during clerkships. AI also serves as a rapid clinical reference, instantly bridging knowledge gaps on the hospital floor. He argues that delegating “cognitive busywork” to AI allows clinicians to focus on communication and clinical judgment, promoting a “Human-Centered” shift. Snively advises peers to proactively seek research opportunities and mentorship, citing the Radiology Interest Group as an example.

A

roadmap for tomorrow’s clinicians

The MilMed article identifies several “force multipliers“ that AI brings to the MHS:

• Reduced Cognitive Burden: Automating administrative tasks allows providers to focus on “high-touch” patient care.

• Operational Readiness: Training clinicians to use AI in austere environments ensures

a high standard of care even when separated from traditional medical infrastructure.

• Personalized Learning: Tools allow students to tailor their education to their specific needs, creating a more versatile medical force.

The path ahead

The authors acknowledge barriers, specifically the “black box” nature of complex algorithms. This term describes systems that provide answers without revealing the underlying logic or evidence used to reach those decisions. This lack of transparency requires clinicians to maintain high AI literacy, verifying the AI’s output against established medical standards and maintaining a “human-in-the loop” approach.

Despite these hurdles, the consensus is clear: integration is inevitable. Snively envisions a trusted, AI-enabled ecosystem to solve the problem of misinformation.

“One of the primary concerns with AI is its tendency to ‘halluci nate’ or present incorrect information as fact,” Snively says. “However, if we can combine the processing power of AI with the verified data in medical journals, it becomes a powerful tool to help clinicians quickly identify the things they might have missed.”

USU researchers and students are developing a roadmap to integrate artificial intelligence into military medical education, ensuring future clinicians can effectively partner with AI-enabled tools in complex operational environments. CINCU, ROMANIA — In the rolling hills of central Romania, eight NATO nations gathered at the Land Forces Combat Training Center Getica with their eyes fixed on the virtual battlefield for the initial phase of Dynamic Front 2026.

This year, U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Multi-Domain Command Europe had the unique opportunity to train alongside NATO Allies and partners as they executed a command post exercise utilizing the Romanian simulation center in Cincu.

Modern warfare continues to shape artillery operations and requires a multi-domain approach to effectively fight and win. Exercises like Dynamic Front 26 are critical to test capabilities that counter anti-access/area denial and mass and momentum advantages through multi-domain kill webs.

Through numerous years of training, NATO allies and partners have proven their ability to execute live-fire missions together. As a result, Multi-Domain Command

Europe has now shifted the strategic focus to simulation and command and control to test multinational integration of fires across a distributed battlefield.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Caleb Ayers, master gunner for launcher fires and a lead planner for the exercise assigned to Multi-Domain Command Europe, emphasized how Dynamic Front leverages technology to increase interoperability and maintain the advantage.

“The purpose of the exercise at this moment is to test artillery cooperation across Europe. Dynamic Front helps everyone to operate in a distributed battlefield through the Artillery Systems Cooperation Activities connections,” said Ayers.

ASCA is a software program designed to allow shared data using the same tactical internet network across multiple nations. The technology creates a common digital language, increasing the speed and accuracy of multinational fire mission processing and reducing the likelihood of errors.

“You can have missions going across multiple countries with one control. For Dynamic Front 26, we have our control here in Romania, but we have missions that can go to Germany, Poland and Spain. We can disperse across the entire theater and maintain that communication,” said Ayers.

During execution of the command post exercise, ASCA served as the universal translator and allowed NATO participants to act

as a unified front to protect the alliance. Regardless of nationality or location on the battlefield, the exercise confirmed U.S. and NATO’s ability to share information instantly and accurately to deliver precision fires.

Spanish Armed Forces Lt. Col. Francisco Morejón, commander of the 1-63 Multiple Launch Rocket System Battalion, Field Artillery Command Spain, spoke on how his unit effectively utilized these systems to communicate over 1500 miles away.

“This exercise is very important because it demonstrates the interoperability we have in terms of fires and command and control systems. We receive fire missions from 8th Brigade (Romania) and we translate it into real targets using the same command and control systems to connect to our platoons in Spain,” said Morejón.

Through the simulation, NATO forces replicated realistic scenarios and tested their ability to operate collectively in complex, contested operational environments. The command post exercise affirmed U.S. and NATO’s commitment to deterrence and stability across the European theater.

Ultimately, Dynamic Front continues to demonstrate how allied forces fight as one team when it matters most. U.S. and NATO forces have now transitioned to the live fire portion across four different countries to validate the digital command and control with tangible, real-world effects.

sometimes seem straight out of Dante’s Inferno. But Rome will win visitors over with the lights, food, coffee, culture, history, and a brilliant restless spirit that makes it easy to understand why Rome is called the Eternal City.

There is so much to see and do in and around Rome. Here are four great places to begin.

Must-see: The Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum is so iconic that, ironically, some visitors are ready to give it a pass. Don’t be one of them. The Colosseum is a must-see.

Why? For starters, the size of the place will stir your imagination. For Americans, and especially for football fans, it is staggering to think that the place could have hosted a bowl game which put 80,000 fans in the seats. With 80 entrances, it was the largest arena in the Roman Empire.

It also didn’t look like a sun-bleached ruin when it was built (which is easy to forget). The Colosseum was detailed in bright color. It also originally had a roof that provided spectators relief from the Italian sun.

Standing inside the Colosseum is also an essential experience, mostly because it’s so much easier to imagine everything that once happened there. There were gladiator fights, wild animal hunts, naval battles on the flooded floor, and a hundred other events, both good and truly awful. And all of it lasted for more than 500 years after the Emperor Vespasian ordered the building built in the first century AD.

A country within a city: The Vatican

So, technically, the Vatican is a country (the smallest in the world!) within a city. That said, it is an essential part of the Rome experience. Much of Europe’s history was shaped from the Vatican, where powerful popes allied with (or plotted against) emperors and kings to shape the political face of the continent.

Even if those days are gone, the Vatican remains exceptional. It is filled with priceless artwork and incredible architecture.

The Sistine Chapel, with its Michelangelopainted ceiling, is rightfully famous. But visitors need to see the other astounding works of art, like that in the Raphael Rooms, or the Gallery of Maps inside the Vatican Museum.

Adventure can still be had in the Vatican, too, especially for those who are willing to climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica (where you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view of Rome), or for those who are lucky enough to get tickets to visit St. Peter’s tomb.

Off the beaten path: Capuchin Crypts

If you’re looking for a well-kept secret in Rome, this place might be it. Rome has catacombs, which contain the bones of around 4,000 Capuchin (a Roman Catholic religious order) Friars.

A bit like the famous Parisian catacombs (though much smaller), the crypt was built in the 1600s. It contains six rooms, a wall of bones in the shape of a church, and a slightly creepy atmosphere.

The crypt is also well located, despite being off the beaten path. It’s only a short walk from Rome’s famous Trevi Fountain, for example. So after the bones, head to the fountain and buy a gelato. Because life is short, right?

Great side trip: Villa Adriana

The Villa Adriana, or Hadrian’s Villa, is located in Tivoli, roughly 30 minutes outside of Rome. The villa is special for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that it looks really good for a place that was built almost 2,000 years ago.

It’s an ideal spot for a break from the speed and noise of Rome. There are beautiful pools, elaborate fountains, lush gardens, walking paths, and room to breathe. Some of the sycamore trees are centuries old. At Villa Adriana, it’s very easy to imagine Roman emperors strolling around. Even though it is outside of Rome, the place feels just as eternal.

Getting there

Direct flights to Rome from major German airports are easily and frequently available. By car, Rome is just over 12 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and just over 11 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
