Meeting face-to-face with employees, listening to feedback and showing appreciation were three reasons U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Commander Col. Jeffery Higgins and garrison Deputy Garrison Commander Paul Hossenlopp visited Germersheim Army Depot and Coleman Work Site, two of the garrison’s critical support sites, Aug. 8. Higgins and Hossenlopp made
the visit with the express purpose of meeting face-to-face with employees stationed at these critical locations. Coleman Worksite and Germersheim Army Depot are two of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s 26 strategic sites throughout the region. Both sites lie between 40 and 60 miles from the garrison’s headquarters in Kaiserslautern.
“It’s important to me that all our team knows they’re seen, heard and valued,” said Higgins. “Getting out here isn’t about checking boxes; it’s about checking in. We’re in this together, and that connection is what drives
mission success and ensures IMCOM’s support to those sites.”
At Coleman Work Site, Higgins met with firefighters and Directorate of Public Works employees. He met with and recognized the heroism of a contractor who recently foiled a burglary attempt. At Germersheim Army Depot, Higgins met with firefighters, postal workers and engineers. He saw where a new warning siren is being installed as part of the partnership between the city of Germersheim and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.
“It means a lot to the folks out
here when leadership makes the effort to visit,” said John S. Cruz, site manager at Germersheim.
“Our teams work hard every day providing IMCOM support, often far from the spotlight, and having the command team come out to listen and show appreciation really boosts morale.”
Germersheim Army Depot, established in 1951, serves as a central logistics hub for the Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Commissary Agency, and Army and Air Force Exchange Service. It plays a vital role in receiving, storing, and distributing goods
across Europe, Central Command, and Africa. Coleman Work Site, located in Mannheim, is home to the Coleman Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite. Managed by the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, the site supports strategic readiness by maintaining and staging thousands of vehicles and equipment for rapid deployment.
U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz advances the Department of Defense mission to achieve peace through strength as we serve, support and secure the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater.

U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft and Allied fighter jets flew in formation over the Monument of Freedom in Riga, Latvia, Aug. 19, as part of Bomber Task Force Europe, demonstrating NATO air forces’ ability to operate together anywhere, anytime.
The U.S. B-1B Lancer flew in formation with two Hungarian and Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, demonstrating
Allied integration fostered during an ongoing training deployment. The Hungarian Gripens are deployed to Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, in support of the NATO’s Air Policing mission.
“The security of the Baltic States and NATO’s Eastern flank is the cornerstone of the security of the entire EuroAtlantic region,”
Latvian Minister of Defence
Andris Spruds said. “Such U.S. and Allied flyover maneuvers clearly demonstrate NATO’s presence in the region, transatlantic unity, and commitment to collectively strengthen the security of the Baltic State region.”
During the deployment, U.S. bombers integrated with Norwegian and other Allied air forces to rehearse advanced tactics, share threat information in real time, and ensure the ability to maneuver freely even when access is contested. Each combined mission reinforces the coalition’s capacity
to operate effectively in dynamic and highthreat environments.
Bomber Task Force Europe is part of a regular series of deployments that strengthen Allied readiness, deepen integration, and demonstrate credible, combat-ready airpower in support of the collective defense of the homeland and the Euro-Atlantic region.

U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft deployed from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and arrived at Ørland Air Base, Norway, on Aug. 9, to begin Ally-led training operations as part of the latest Bomber Task Force Europe.
The deployment empowers U.S. Air Force aircrews to refine tactics, increase flexibility and strengthen coordination with Allies by exercising and operating together increasing warfighting capabilities and readiness.
While in theater, the bomber aircrews will conduct a series of Ally-led training missions in complex, high-threat airspace. Aircrews will train on key elements of the find, fix, track and target process – honing the speed and accuracy with which bombers and fighters are able to act against threats in real time. As
aircrews practice these skills, they simultaneously train against ground and air-based threats designed to deny their freedom to maneuver, requiring them to act decisively to counter threats and gain air superiority.
“This deployment allows us to train the way we fight — integrated with our NATO Allies, ready and adaptive,” said Lt. Col. Eric Alvarez, 345th Bomb Squadron deployed commander. “It’s about building experience and trust together, enhancing readiness, and staying sharp in dynamic environments.”
This is the 5th Bomber Task Force Europe deployment in 2025 and reflects the U.S. Air Force’s continued commitment to maintaining a ready and capable forward presence across the region.

‘Safety starts with me’ — back to school: Be alert for children, stay safe on roads, autobahns
by Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support Brigade — Europe & Africa
Back to school has started, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade Safety Office is asking that we exercise extreme caution while operating our motor vehicles on the roads, especially when approaching areas where there may be small children and when traveling along school bus routes and nearby schools and daycare centers.
As part of the Army’s 101 critical days of the summer safety and the 405th AFSB’s “safety starts with me” campaign, Leann Fraka and LaShaun Chappel want people to be safe – and when it comes to back to school – keep our children safe, too.
Micheal Dean has been working at the 405th AFSB’s Logistics Readiness Center Bavaria Drivers Testing and Training Station on Tower Barracks in Grafenwoehr, Germany, for more than four years. He said the rules of the road in Germany are very different than the U.S.
“And this is true when it comes to our children and the school buses here in Germany,” said Dean who is the lead DTTS instructor for Garmisch, Hohenfels and Grafenwoehr. “We should always exercise extreme caution, slow down and stay observant near the schools and along the bus routes.”
“Watch out for children crossing roads unexpectedly. A lot of accidents are caused by distracted driving. During the school season
and whenever you are operating a vehicle, pay attention and take your time. There’s no rush,” Dean said.
Rabih Youness is an employee at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Student Transportation Office. He said when a bus stops to drop off or pick up students, be careful. In fact, he recommends stopping and waiting.
“When we provide training for our students, we tell them to wait until the bus leaves and look both ways before crossing the street,” said Youness, “but for the drivers, always be on the lookout and check to see if any students are passing from the other side of the bus.”
Stephen Todd, a transportation specialist at 405th AFSB’s Logistics Readiness Center Ansbach, said school buses in Germany don’t look like school buses in the U.S. The German school buses look like regular metro or city buses. There will be an orange sign on the back of the bus with an illustration of two children walking, though. That’s the differentiation.
“If you see that their turn signal is on this means they’re about to pull over, and you cannot pass them at normal speed. It’s safer to just stop and wait, but if you do decide it’s safe to pass you must reduce your speed to walking speed,” said Todd, who has worked at the Drivers Testing and Training Station on Katterbach Kaserne for 16 months.
Todd also stressed the importance of motor vehicle safely in Germany and Europe, in general. He talked about priority roads and
understanding the rules of the road. For example, when approaching an intersection while not on a priority road, the vehicle to the right always has the right-of-way. Also, road signs, he said. There are a lot of road signs in Germany and Europe that may not be familiar to U.S. licensed drivers. For that reason, Todd recommends studying and learning all the German and European road signs. And then there’s the autobahns, he said.
“Literally this weekend on the way back from Ramstein, I saw a terrible accident with a Mercedes-Benz station wagon on the autobahn. It was going too fast, lost control and ended up flipping several times before colliding into the guardrail,” he said.
“It’s fun being on the autobahn where it’s unlimited and unrestricted, and you can go as fast as you want, but please do not do that,” said Todd. “Even the most experienced drivers can make a mistake. All it takes is a split second. Please slow down and be sensible.”
“The discipline you display on the battlefield and in your profession must extend to the road. Driving comes with the responsibility to protect yourself, your fellow Soldiers, and civilians, also your family. Drive sober, buckle up and stay focused. Your readiness and the readiness of this brigade depend on it,” said Col. Ernest Lane II, the commander of the 405th AFSB.
“With school starting soon, pay special attention to the children. They will be crossing streets, running to bus stops, and playing near the roadways,” Lane said. “Slow it down
Safety starts with me — School buses in Germany don’t look like school buses in the U.S. The German school buses look like regular metro or city buses. There will be an orange sign on the back of the bus with an illustration of two children walking, though. That’s the differentiation. Courtesy graphic
in heavily populated areas, especially where there are children. Let’s take this moment to renew our commitment to our families, friends, coworkers and neighbors, and be extra safe while operating our motor vehicles on the road.”

The 86th Maintenance Squadron hosted Serbian military members for a weeklong Crash Damaged Disabled Aircraft Recovery training course at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 11-15.
The training course focused on safely and efficiently recovering aircraft from emergency situations. They accomplished this by stabilizing, lifting and relocating a disabled aircraft without causing further damage.
The training also enhanced interoperability between U.S. and Serbian forces for potential realworld recovery missions.
“It’s like having good life insurance,” said Tino Weichel, 86th
Maintenance Squadron CDDAR team chief. “You hope you never need it, but you’re glad it’s there when you do.”
The weeklong course began with classroom instruction covering safety protocols, recovery planning and coordination. Participants then moved on to hands-on equipment familiarization where they learned to operate cranes, slings and inflatable lifting bags.
Two aircraft lifting exercises finished off the week’s training. In the first lift exercise, participants used a crane and sling to simulate recovering an aircraft with collapsed landing gear. On the final day of the training they conducted the second hands-on exercise using large airbags to lift a simulated disabled aircraft when all landing gear failed
to extend before landing.
A G222 aircraft served as the simulated aircraft that was disabled or crashed.
“We train as much as possible so that if the call comes, we’re ready,” said Tech. Sgt. Jesse Hayes, 86th MXS noncommissioned officer in charge of CDDAR.
The 86th MXS CDDAR team supports recovery missions at several locations across Europe including Ramstein, Chievres Air Base, Belgium and Lajes Field, Portugal.
By partnering with the Serbian military, the training not only enhanced technical proficiency but also strengthened interoperability between allied forces. When an emergency happens, both nations can respond effectively and keep air operations moving.

U.S. Army medical personnel stationed in Poland and Germany are fielding a new web-based platform designed to streamline electronic health record management and improve patient care in forward or remote operating locations.
The Patient Health, Operational Electronic Network Information Exchange Medical, aims to supplement the current Health Assessment Lite Operations system, addressing key challenges associated with its deployment and maintenance.
PhoenixMed is specifically designed for Army healthcare providers, nurses, and medics operating at Role 1 and Role 2 medical sites. The fielding that is currently taking place in Europe marks a crucial step towards potentially deploying the system to Army outlying medical locations globally.
“PhoenixMed represents the evolution of operational medicine,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command Europe and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. “PhoenixMed is secure, scalable and built to ensure quality, safe care in an operational setting, which will reduce risk to force and risk to mission.”
Army medical officials indicated that the current HALO health records system presents logistical hurdles and challenges that PhoenixMed
Army
seeks to eliminate. For example, HALO requires installation and configuration by a qualified System Administrator certified to meet stringent 8140 compliance standards. However, not all Army medical units deploy with such specialized personnel, leaving them unable to properly configure and maintain the system in the field.
PhoenixMed is ready to go from the moment we log in.”
U.S. Army Maj. (Dr.) Andrew Jackson, command surgeon for 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.
According to subject matter experts with Operational Medicine Information Systems – Army, PhoenixMed offers a significant advantage by eliminating the need for local installation maintenance and support. The platform operates entirely through a web browser, requiring no manual upgrades or system configuration by field personnel.
“The Army’s OMIS-A (Operations Management Information System-Army) centrally maintains the system, ensuring consistent and reliable performance,” said Ami Bryant, OMIS-A acting product lead. “Feature upgrades are deployed automatically, reducing the administrative burden on medical staff.”
“The ease of use is a game-changer,” said U.S. Army Maj. (Dr.) Andrew Jackson, command surgeon for 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. “With HALO, we often struggle to get it up and running and keep it running.
According to Army medical information technology experts, another key benefit of PhoenixMed is its ability to replace hard copy SF 600 Forms (Chronological Record of Medical Care) with electronic medical documentation. This digital transformation promises to improve data accuracy, accessibility, and efficiency.
“The PhoenixMed system is designed to work at Role 1 and Role 2 levels of medical care including battalion aid stations and the medical company,” added Bryant. “This ensures that the same comprehensive and consistent health record is accessible to all Army healthcare providers that are treating the servicemember.”
Army medical experts remarked that if the fielding program in Europe proves successful, Army Medicine plans to deploy PhoenixMed to all outlying medical locations worldwide. This would represent a significant advancement in Army Medicine’s ability to provide timely and effective healthcare to Soldiers, regardless of their location.
“Looking ahead, the development team plans to incorporate offline functionality
into PhoenixMed,” said U.S. Army Col. Peter Huynh, chief information officer for 68th Theater Medical Command. “This future capability would allow medical staff to continue documenting patient information in a denied, degraded, intermittent, and limited environment. Once a connection is re-established, the system would automatically transfer the locally stored data, ensuring seamless data integration.”
Information technology subject matter experts stated that the transition from HALO to PhoenixMed represents a strategic shift towards a more agile, user-friendly, and reliable health records management system for Army Medicine.
“By simplifying digital casualty documentation at the point of care, and ensuring consistent management of the clinical data, PhoenixMed has the potential to significantly enhance the delivery of healthcare to Soldiers on the front lines around the globe,” said U.S. Army Col. Tracy Michael, commander of 68th Theater Medical Command. “The results of the pilot program in Europe will be vital to informing Army Transformation efforts to accelerate the development of an operational electronic health record.”
PhoenixMed was created and designed by Operational Medicine Information Systems – Army. OMIS-A was established on April 12, 2024, to modernize the Army’s electronic health record software capabilities to operational Soldiers worldwide.
Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, joined U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz for its annual force protection exercise at Panzer Kaserne in early August 2025.
The multi-day event tested security forces’ ability to detect and respond to potential threats during elevated force protection conditions. Soldiers worked alongside garrison security personnel to operate vehicle checkpoints, conduct searches, and respond to simulated incidents, all in temperatures topping 90 degrees.
“This exercise is about more than procedures; it is about stress testing our systems, assessing ourselves and validating our ability to protect our communities when it matters,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Lalor, commanding general, 21st TSC, and senior responsible officer for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “Our Soldiers, working alongside the garrison, joint and host nation partners displayed the expertise, adaptability, and teamwork needed to accomplish the mission.”
As the General Officer for Force Protection for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, Lalor oversees security planning and execution across the
Kaiserslautern, Baumholder, and U.S. Army Garrison Benelux areas of responsibility, with a focus on countering potential terrorist threats.
In the months leading up to the event, 21st TSC troops completed diversion training covering tactical search procedures, checkpoint protocols, and threat identification drills. Leaders said this preparation gave Soldiers the baseline skills needed to respond effectively during the exercise.
“The training Soldiers receive is a baseline they could rely on during the exercise,” said Capt. Christian Rivera, commander, HHC, 21st STB. “They already had the muscle memory to act quickly, whether it was spotting a suspicious modification in a vehicle or recognizing indicators of an explosive device.”
Scenarios included dismounted vehicle inspections, static security post operations, and explosive hazard recognition using simulated improvised explosive devices. Soldiers applied controlled entry procedures and identified threats in high-pressure situations.
“Exercises like this push you to think beyond your daily role and apply core Soldier skills,” said Sgt. Seth Thomas, a human resources specialist with the 21st TSC G1. “It’s a chance to lead, react, and make decisions that matter for the safety of the entire installation.”
Daniel Pedersen, operations officer and emergency manager
with the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security, said integrating 21st TSC Soldiers into the exercise enhanced the garrison’s readiness posture.
“This exercise reinforces the garrison’s readiness with regards to force protection. With the support and guidance of the 21st TSC, especially the General Officer for Protection, our garrison is staying vigilant to protect the community. Exercises like this are key to making sure we’re ready to face any threat together.”
Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, emphasized the value of unified defense.
“Creating a shared understanding between the garrison, Army senior leaders, the 86 Airlift Wing, and host nation defense partners is critical to meeting any threat,” said Higgins. “When we have a collective awareness, we move faster, make smarter decisions, and stand ready to protect our people and our mission.”
Rivera added experience reinforces the link between homestation security and operational readiness.
“Training like this ensures our teams are ready,” Rivera said. “Protecting our installations not only safeguards military assets, but also our families and fellow service members.”
realistic, externally evaluated, and collective training scenarios.
by Staff Sgt. Nicholas Vidro Office of the Chief of Army Reserve
Approximately 7,000 soldiers from around the Army Reserve are training at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, as a part of the Combat Support Training Exercise 25, Global Strike, an annual exercise designed to prepare reserve soldiers for the transforming battlefield of the future.
The exercise focuses on training for large scale combat operations, incorporating emerging threats seen in the global spectrum.
Army Brig. Gen. Sandra Martin, deputy commander of the 412th Theater Engineer Command, is serving as the senior trainer for the event. She ensures that all units participating in the exercise are meeting their mission.
“I’m responsible for working with the observer-coach-trainers; getting information and feedback on how the units are doing every day with achieving their training objectives,” she said. “We spent a year of planning that led up to CSTX, and during that planning, we worked closely with [the] 78th Training Division to understand what challenges soldiers would benefit from the most.”
Some of the units participating in training are engineering, military police, chemical, aviation and logistics.
Along with training the soldier skills needed to defend against near-peer adversaries, the participating units are challenged with innovating defenses against anticipated threats.
“CSTX prepares battalion level and below on large-scale combat operations,” she said. “We are incorporating some of the modernday battlefield threats, such as [unmanned aircraft systems] and training counter-UAS battle drills. The emerging threat is going to
encompass a lot of [artificial intelligence] and robotics. Our soldiers are adapting at a rapid pace to prepare for that.”
As the Army prepares for large scale combat operations with near-peer adversaries, the name of the game is speed. Units will be on the move with an enemy that is hunting them.
“You’ve got to be mobile, you’ve got to be concealed if you think you’re going to survive on the battlefield,” Martin said. “That’s what we’re really focused on here is trying to get battalions to be able to move on the battlefield very quickly. As a matter of fact, we had a success where the 844th Engineer Battalion was able to move their [tactical operations center] in less than 15 minutes.”
This exercise crosses over with the Medical Readiness and Training Command led, Global Medic exercise. The mission challenges soldiers similarly in a medical environment. They provide simulated medical evacuation during training scenarios where soldiers in training temporarily become simulated casualties.
Both exercises are coordinated and facilitated by the 78th TD, providing observers, trainers, soldiers and simulated opposing forces with scenarios that allow for the 60,000-acre base to be completely utilized; giving the participants the most realistic environment to train in.
With so many elements dedicated to the success of these soldiers, there’s a few things Martin is hoping all can come away with.
“Leaders should walk away with battle drills to quickly move their [command posts],” she said. “To understand the ins and outs of those drills, to rehearse it with their soldiers, and to understand what is a necessity and what isn’t — lightening the load as they move forward.”

Dear Doc,
My kids and spouse are outside all the time in the woods by our house on base. I worry about them getting bitten and infected by ticks, and there are a lot of them during the summer months. I need some tips to prevent tick-borne infection. What do we do if we find one of the creepy bugs on me, a family member, our pets, or while on-duty in the field?
— U.S. Marine Sgt. “Woody” Woods
Sgt. Woody, You’re right to be concerned about ticks. They’re everywhere, and ticks can cause disease, such as Lyme disease or babesiosis. The latter is a parasitic infection, so antibiotics won’t work, but a combination of an antiparasitic agent and antibiotic does. Checking for ticks and getting seen by a doctor if you’re bitten is more important than ever.
I found an expert bug scientist, or entomologist, at the Defense Health AgencyPublic Health in Aberdeen, Maryland. Robyn Nadolny holds a doctorate in ecological sciences, runs a molecular biology laboratory, and is chief of the vectorborne disease branch. She has answers to your questions and offers her advice:
Now is the season to check for ticks after you or a loved one have been outdoors. It’s also the time to check yourself and your battle buddy for ticks during field exercises.
Ticks can situate themselves anywhere on your body but are often found in hard-to-see areas such as the groin, armpits, and scalp.
Military field exercises and deployments put service members at higher risk for tickborne diseases, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and a host of other infections can be at risk, too.
Lyme disease is the most common vectortransmitted disease in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Most humans are infected with Lyme disease when immature blacklegged ticks, called nymphs, bite them. Nymphs are tiny
Know your adversary. Female blacklegged ticks (also called deer ticks) are considered more dangerous than males of this species because they attach and become engorged with blood, like the tick pictured. While feeding, they can transmit a parasite that invades your bloodstream and causes babesiosis, which can be treated. Our expert, tick scientist Robyn Nadolny, offers tips for protection against ticks and how to mail ticks for identification by the Defense Health Agency-Public Health’s MilTICK service so you can get medical treatment if you’re infected. — about the size of a poppy seed — and difficult to see; they feed during the spring and summer months. Adults and nymphs of other tick species are also usually abundant in the spring and summer, but ticks can bite at any time of the year as long as it’s above freezing.
In most cases, the infected tick must be attached to a human for 36 to 48 hours or more before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted. Other pathogenic organisms can be transmitted more quickly, so it’s a best practice to remove the tick as soon as it’s discovered.
Adult ticks can also transmit Lyme disease bacteria, but they are larger (sesame seedsized), and people who are bitten are more likely to discover and remove the ticks before they have had time to transmit the bacteria.
Babesiosis is a parasitic infection transmitted primarily by blacklegged ticks. The number of cases of the disease has increased in recent years, especially in the mid-Atlantic. The blacklegged tick is more common in the Northeast and upper Midwest but is present across most of the Eastern U.S.
Tick checks
Here are some good tips for your tick checks:
• Self-check or buddy check after leaving the tick-infested area. This is the best
fail-safe strategy.
• Use tape to catch ticks crawling on your uniform or clothes.
• Re-treat footwear with a pyrethroid insect repellant spray several times throughout the season.
• Check yourself in front of a mirror after being outdoors or take a shower as soon as you can.
The Department of Defense’s Insect Repellent System is a safe and proven method to reduce disease and the annoyance level associated with insects. The system incorporates:
• Permethrin on the uniform (factory or field-treatment methods)
• DOD-approved DEET or Picaridin insect repellent on exposed skin
• A properly worn uniform
• Permethrin-treated bed nets when relevant
Other useful tips include:
• Look frequently for freckles or small specks of moving dirt that may be ticks.
• Tuck pants into your boots and button your sleeves down fully.
• Toss your clothes into the dryer for 10 minutes on high after you get home. This will kill ticks crawling on your clothing.
• Remove ticks promptly and properly by pulling the head straight out with sharp tweezers to lessen the chances of the tick rupturing and having infected fluid come in contact with a bite.
• Keep dead ticks that have bitten you in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer for a few weeks in case you develop symptoms.
• Treat civilian clothes with permethrin spray that lasts through multiple washes.
• Report tick bites immediately to a health care provider.
MilTICK Service helps you identify ticks and infection
MilTICK is a free testing and identification service for ticks removed from DOD personnel, their dependents, retirees, contractors, and civilian employees. DHA-Public Health provides the service, and those eligible can save their ticks and mail them into MilTICK directly or through a military hospital or clinic.
MilTICK tests for the most commonly
occurring pathogens within a 30-day turnaround time, usually much quicker. This enables the person bitten by the tick to seek medical advice in a timely manner if the tick is found positive for a human disease.
MilTICK Surveillance for Understudied, Rare, and Emerging Pathogens, or SURE Path, is a service that began in December 2023 to expand testing for rare and emerging tick-borne diseases.
“MilTICK SURE Path uses tick specimens already submitted and subjects them to additional testing for rare pathogens at the end of each calendar year. This allows the vector-borne disease team to better understand emerging tick-borne threats to military communities and notify installations and individuals if rare pathogens are discovered.
If you’d like to see the tick risks at your installation, check out the MilTICK CACenabled data dashboard which is updated monthly with the latest MilTICK data.
It’s much easier to find germs in a tick than it is to diagnose a person with a disease, so tick testing can serve as a valuable tool in the diagnostic toolbox.
If you find a tick attached, send it to the MilTICK team right away. Not only will you get results to hopefully put your mind at ease, but you’ll also be providing data tick scientists can use to better protect the rest of the community.
I hope I’ve given you enough information about ticks to protect you, your family, your four-legged family, and your battle buddies. Vigilance and tick checks are increasingly important given that ticks are now found year-round and pretty much worldwide due to climate change and are continually expanding their territories.
Our military bug scientist had a lot of useful information to share about ticks and the diseases they carry. Always look for those nasties after being outdoors, apply repellant every time you might be in a tickrich environment, and reapply as directed. Check your kids and pets, too. There are a number of CAC-enabled MilTICK tick submission kits and other resources. Hope this helps, and remember, stay safe out there.

Did you know that musicians from the Westpfalz region, especially from Mackenbach, Weilerbach and Kusel, have played a decisive role even on distant American stages?
In the 19th century, employment in the region was scarce and there were only limited opportunities for the fine musicians known in the region. Up to 2,500 instrumentalists set out per year and joined military orchestras, court ensembles or played in coffee houses. Some joined circuses to announce spectacular highlights with wellknown drum rolls or fanfares and to entertain spectators between acts.
Others opted to venture throughout Europe to countries such as France, Spain, Italy and as far away as Türkiye or Palestine. Anna Wunderlich was one of the few female musicians, who met her husband from Kusel during a tour to Cyprus. Their son Fritz became a renowned tenor
and the music venue Fritz-WunderlichHalle in Kusel was named after him.
Even more adventurous musicians set sail to the New World to seek their fortunes and founded their own orchestras in the United States. Ensembles such as the “Mackenbacher Wandermusikanten” were rather popular in states in the eastern part of the country.
Some of the wandering musicians chose to return to their hometowns after roaming the world for a few years, while others decided to stay and even became famous throughout America.
Heinrich Jacob from Mackenbach was one of these musicians who emigrated to New York. While playing in a club with his band one evening, he managed to convince a young waiter to join them. This was none other than Frank Sinatra in his first public performance, who later became a member of his band. Heinrich was rather successful under his artist name “Bill Henry” and his band called “Headliners.” The Musikantenmuseum boasts Sinatra’s origi-
nal trombone in its selection of artefacts.
Another famous wandering musician from Miesenbach was Karl Schirra, who played in ensembles in Boston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia after World War I, mainly as a circus musician. It is noted that some of the musicians actually became wealthy during the course of time and numerous prestigious houses in Mackenbach are reminiscent of the wandering musicians and their contributions, marked with plaques.
One of the two musical museums in the Westpfalz is located in Mackenbach, where up to two-thirds of the inhabitants lived on “musical money.” It is dedicated to a career field that shaped the prosperity of the whole Westpfalz region. It has a wide display of photos and unusual instruments as well as its showpiece, a large model of Circus Busch from Berlin which is acknowledged in the Guiness Book of World Records. https://www.musikantenmuseum.de/
The event Musikantenlandtag 2025 is taking place in Mackenbach Aug. 23 from 3 – 7.30 p.m. The day includes a
sneak peek at the museum for children, a magic show with magician Tonga for the whole family, an official opening by County Commissioner Ralf Leβmeister and musical entertainment with Musikverein Mackenbach and Reichenbach-Steegen. Regional specialties and drinks will also be provided.
The second is the MusikantenlandMuseum at Castle Lichtenberg in Thallichtenberg near Kusel. It lets the infamous musicians come back to life with large displays of realistic scenes and depicts their daily lives. In addition to hearing original music composed by these masters of the trade via headphone, the world’s largest tuba is on display. https://burglichtenberg.pfaelzerbergland.de
Maybe one of your ancestors belonged to this special lineage of musical talent and you’ve inherited it as a singer, instrumentalist or just have an ear for great music. Next time you hear a drum roll, remember the adventurous musicians from the region.

ZORTMAN, MONT. — Montana
National Guard’s 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion members rescued a hiker Aug. 9 from Old Scraggy Peak in the Little Rockies.
A man fell off a cliff north of Zortman and had severe injuries. Local authorities were unable to reach him and called the Montana Army National Guard for assistance.
A Black Hawk helicopter piloted by Cpt. Otis Smith and CW3 Tom Kinyon responded immediately. Sgt. Ian Montgomery and Sfc. Anthony Wright were the crew chiefs on board and Sgt. Randy Scales was the flight medic on board.
The crew donned night-vision goggles, took to the air and arrived on the scene at 11 p.m. MST. Ground search and rescue teams signaled the aircraft and directed it to Old Scraggy Peak. The aircrew assessed the situation, terrain and risk factors to develop the safest plan of action for rescuing the patient.
Scales was hoisted down 130 feet in the dark and in treacherous mountain conditions, where he secured and stabilized the patient in a stretcher. The injured man was safely rescued into the aircraft, and the decision was made to fly the patient to Billings to get him the best possible care. Fire and ambulance crews met the aircraft and transported the patient to the hospital.

“It’s great to be able to do something for the state that you train for all the time,” Smith said. “I think it’s incredibly important that we work alongside all the National Guardsmen in the state and the civilians as well. All those entities being able to work together is pretty incredible.”
The Montana National Guard relishes the opportunity to give back to its fellow Montanans, and the 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion is always just a call away.
“We have this capability… that can cover the wideness of the state at a moment’s notice. No matter what happens, wherever they are, we can most likely get them out and get them to a safe place,” Smith said.

Since the inception of airborne warfare, the practice of using parachutes to insert troops into combat zones without land passage has turned the tides of conflicts. Commanders use airborne forces to seize the initiative. A brigade of paratroopers can envelop the ground from the sky in moments, allowing an army
to strike deep inside enemy territory to gain key terrain and rapidly build combat power.
Paratroopers today learn their craft in the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, where soldiers leapt into history 85 years ago.
On Aug. 16, 1940, 48 volunteer members of the Army Parachute Test Platoon jumped from a Douglas B-18 Bolo bomb-
er at 1,500 feet. The jump was less than 45 days after the establishment of the platoon and marked the true beginning of U.S. airborne forces.
Paratroopers everywhere now celebrate that date as National Airborne Day, commemorating “the bravery and daring spirit of sky soldiers,” according to the 2002 presidential proclamation that established the observance.
Paratroopers assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade descend during an airborne operation at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Jan. 13. The 173rd Airborne Brigade serves as the Army’s rapid response force in Europe.
Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen attached to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, rig up with T-11 parachutes before boarding a C-17 cargo aircraft to successfully conduct a static line jump during jump week at the Basic Airborne Course onto Fryar Drop Zone, at Fort Benning, Georgia, June 9.
Army Sgts. 1st Class Rafael Torres and Zach Krietenstein and Staff Sgt. Griffin Mueller, members of the U.S. Army Parachute Team, known as the Golden Knights, descend over Mont-SaintMichel, France, June 7, 2024, during an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

is one of Europe’s most picturesque alpine villages. While it’s well known as a premier winter ski destination, summer reveals an entirely different — and arguably more rewarding — experience. Towering limestone peaks, endless hiking trails, mountain huts serving fresh local cuisine, and stunning vistas make Selva the ultimate alpine escape, especially for travelers seeking nature, tranquility, and authentic South Tyrolean hospitality.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Dolomites
The Dolomites — the jagged, pale mountains that surround Val Gardena — were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. This status honors their geological uniqueness and extraordinary beauty. Composed largely of ancient coral reefs transformed into dramatic rock towers, the Dolomites are considered one of the world’s most stunning mountain landscapes.
In summer, these peaks are bathed in golden light, particularly at sunrise and sunset, when the mountains glow with a phenomenon known as “Enrosadira” – a pink-to-orange alpenglow that feels almost unreal.
Selva di Val Gardena – A hiker’s paradise
Unlike winter, where skiers dominate the scene, summer is the low season in Selva di Val Gardena. That means fewer crowds, more affordable accommodations, and easy access to nature.
Mountain huts (Rifugi) & cuisine
Hundreds of kilometers of marked hiking trails lead through alpine meadows, forests, and up to mountain huts (called “rifugi” in Italian or “Hütten” in German), many of which serve homemade meals with ingredients sourced from nearby farms. Expect hearty local fare like:
• Speckknödel (bacon dumplings in broth)
• Polenta with mushrooms or goulash
• Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes with fruit compote) And mountain cheeses aged in traditional cellars. Some huts offer overnight lodging, allowing for multi-day trekking experiences.
Lifts for hikers
Many chair lifts and gondolas remain open throughout the summer, making it easy to reach panoramic viewpoints without an all-day uphill hike. For example:
• The Dantercepies gondola offers sweeping views over the Sella Group.
• The Ciampinoi lift provides access to gentle alpine paths ideal for families or beginner hikers.
• The Seceda lift, accessible via nearby Ortisei, leads to one of the most iconic ridgelines in the Alps.
Route tips & toll info:
You’ll likely drive through Austria and then into Italy via the Brenner Pass. Both Austria and Italy require tolls:
Austria:
• Purchase a vignette (toll sticker) for the autobahns.
A 10-day vignette costs around €9.90.
• Brenner Pass: There’s an additional toll at the Brenner border crossing (about €11 one-way).
Italy:
• Motorway tolls are charged based on distance.
Expect to pay between €10–20 for the final Italian stretch.
• Credit cards are accepted at most toll booths, but it’s wise to carry some cash just in case.
When to go to Selva
Summer in Selva is peaceful, sunny, and significantly more affordable than ski season. While winter hotel rates can skyrocket, summer lodging often costs 40-60 percent less, even in 4-star hotels or alpine lodges with wellness centers.
July and early September are especially ideal, with mild temperatures, wildflowers in bloom, and mostly dry conditions.
Dolomites – Views that redefine “Breathtaking”
Some of the most stunning views on Earth can be found here:
• The Seceda ridgeline offers dramatic views over the Odle/Geisler Peaks.
• The Sella Pass reveals a moon-like landscape with 360 degree views of craggy peaks.
• Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) — just a short drive away — is Europe’s largest high alpine meadow, with gentle trails, rolling hills, and flower-dotted pastures.
Photography lovers and drone users will find the area irresistible, particularly at dawn and dusk when the light paints the limestone cliffs in surreal hues.
Final thoughts on Selva di Val Gardena
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a leisure traveler seeking quiet mountain air and incredible views, Selva di Val Gardena in summer is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Far from the crowds of Venice or Rome and at a fraction of the cost of a ski holiday, this alpine village invites you to slow down, savor local traditions, and immerse yourself in nature.
If your idea of a perfect getaway involves dramatic landscapes, fresh mountain food, and charming trails far above the tourist hustle — look no further than Selva.
Getting to Selva: Drive times from Germany

• Wiesbaden to Selva: Approx. 7.5 hours (640 km)
