Stralsund: A historic city on the sea Stralsund has a UNESCO World Heritage designation for a reason. COMMENTARY Behind the wheel of service: The life & legacy of a logistics leader By Cecil D. Moore 86th Force Support Squadron Growing up in the 60s and 70s, owning a car was just a dream for me. Fast forward to today, and I’m responsible for the maintenance and safety of more than 70 NonAppropriated and Appropriated Fund vehicles. Not many people can say they’ve dedicated nearly their entire life to serving their country, but I’m proud to be one of them. Over the past 45 years, I’ve served in both the military and civilian sectors. I’m currently the Vehicle Control Officer for the Resource Flight, Logistics Division, 86th Force Support Squadron. Being a VCO comes with its challenges, but I truly enjoy it, especially because I get to work with some incredible people across the board. I was born and raised in Collierville, Tennessee. By the time I was seven, I was already getting up at 5 a.m. to pick cotton and feed the animals before heading off to school. All the boys in the neighborhood worked, it was just our way of life. I landed my first job at age 15, delivering groceries. Looking back, I guess my journey in logistics started earlier than I realized. At 17, I joined the U.S. Army as a Warehouse Storage Supply Operator

and retired nearly 27 years later as a Senior Quartermaster with the 1st Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Cavalry. I officially retired from the Army on April 1, 2006, after a career that spanned the Cold War, the Panama Campaign, Desert Shield/ Storm, the Kosovo Campaign, and the War on Terror. I still remember standing at the Berlin Wall in 1982 thinking, “Who could build such a thing?” I was relieved and proud to witness its fall in 1989. Throughout my military career, logistics remained my focus. I served three tours in Southwest Asia, two as

a soldier (1990–91 and 2003–04) and one as a Department of Defense civilian (2005–06), where I worked as an Operational Needs Manager. My job was to ensure our warfighters had the equipment they needed to complete the mission and stay protected. While deployed with MultiNational Force–Iraq in Baghdad, I had the privilege of working closely with the U.S. Air Force. I was blown away by their professionalism, teamwork, and grit. These Airmen regularly put in 12–14-hour days without complaint. I quickly learned

that the Air Force doesn’t just fly, they logged more ground miles in combat zones than anyone. They were brave, prepared, and missionfocused. I also had the honor of working for my mentor, General George W. Casey, who later became the 36th Army Chief of Staff. Funny enough, we discovered that my father had once served under his father’s command in Vietnam. After retiring from the military, I transitioned into civil service as a Logistics Management Specialist. From 2006 to 2022, I managed inventory and property for both U.S. Army Europe and U.S. European Command, with assignments in Heidelberg, Wiesbaden, Washington, D.C., and Stuttgart. I’ve been stationed at Ramstein since 2023, now serving as the Regional Coordinator for Central Texas College. In my current role with the 86th FSS, I coordinate vehicle management and scheduling for services that touch nearly every corner of the base, from restaurants and Child Youth Centers to the library at Vogelweh and Ramstein. I also support Outdoor Recreation programs, Arts and Crafts, Auto Skills, and even the Woodland Golf Course. What keeps me going is simple: the opportunity to serve our Airmen, civilians, retirees, and, most impor-

tantly, their families. I haven’t found a better place to work than the 86th FSS. I genuinely enjoy the people and the mission. It’s a good life. Throughout my career, I’ve been honored to receive numerous awards, including the Superior Civilian Service Award, three Army Commendation Medals, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, and a host of other ribbons and certificates. In 2022, I was deeply honored during my retirement ceremony at EUCOM Headquarters. I couldn’t have reached this point without the unwavering support of my wife, Marion. She’s been the joy and foundation of my life. As for the future, I never really set out to reach a 40-year milestone. And while I don’t have any immediate plans to retire, I do look forward to traveling and spending more time with family when that day comes. If I could leave one piece of advice for the next generation, it would be this: take time to listen. Don’t just speak. Really listen. That’s how you truly understand others.

The visit also provided Flosi insight into how all three organizations strengthen the NATO Alliance and regional partnerships, enhancing multinational interoperability and bolstering deterrence against adversaries around the world. Airmen from across the USAFEAFAFRICA staff showcased the importance of furthering international relationships to build partner capacity, capability and interoperability as an imperative of mission success. Similarly, Flosi learned about the 435th AGOW Airmen’s role in enabling joint and multinational airpower integration at the tactical edge and ensuring resilient communication across multiple domains. “Our air-minded Warfighter must be ready to fight, compete and win in contested environments. Employing combat airpower does not come without risk; we succeed through relationships,” Flosi explained.

and 86th AW on ongoing efforts to bolster base defense capabilities and address emerging challenges including how to protect installations against unauthorized incursions by unmanned aerial systems. “It’s important that we adapt to the current warfare environment, these changes and new innovations ensure we excel and remain at the highest caliber of military readiness,” Flosi emphasized. Airmen from across Ramstein AB also demonstrated their warrior ethos through their unwavering commitment to readiness. While visiting the Silver Flag training site, Flosi discussed the recurring USAFE-AFAFRICA exercise, which brings Airmen together from across various units and functions to develop mission command skills in contested environments. Moreover, Flosi witnessed the commitment of Airmen firsthand during

his immersions with the 86th AW’s Agile Combat Employment training programs: Agile Warrior and Cross Functional Support Personnel. “Agile Warrior integrates eight different maintenance [Air Force specialty codes] to reduce our typical manning footprint by 50% during sustained off-main operating base operations,” expressed 1st Lt. Ryan Garcia, 86th Maintenance Squadron flight commander. “With these small teams, we’re able get maintainers out the door quicker and spread our forces across more locations simultaneously, which to me epitomizes the lethality and readiness we’ll need in future fights.” CASPER is a six-month, selfpaced training course covering wide-ranging skill sets related to Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape; aeromedical evacuation basics; loadmaster basics; drop

zone certification; port operations; and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft egress. These training opportunities simulate a deployed environment with real-world constraints such as minimal personnel and resources, where Airmen are expected to perform a range of tasks beyond their primary duties. After briefing Flosi about 435th AGOW mission sets, Master Sgt. Matthew Baugh, 435th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of operations, added his perspective about the importance of warrior ethos and ACE concepts in the context of his job. “Restoring our warrior ethos and military readiness within Security Forces demands adaptability and growth,” Baugh stated. “To maintain our competitive edge on the evolving battlefield, defenders must embrace new skills and leverage available resources to ensure mental resilience, physical readiness and the ability to operate effectively in any environment.” Leaders at all levels emphasized the most valuable resource in the military are the people. This foundational principle guided Flosi’s approach to connecting with service members across Ramstein. He hosted an all call for USAFEAFAFRICA staff, during which he engaged with Airmen on the security challenges facing the Air Force and emphasized the need for senior noncommissioned officer engagement during this era of change. “I was thrilled to hear CMSAF speak to the importance of the work we do,” said Airman 1st Class Adam Fletcher, U.S. European Command air and air defense analyst. “As a junior analyst, being recognized by my team and earning a coin from the CMSAF has left a lasting impression on me to continue to execute and excel in the mission.”

CMSSF strengthens allied partnerships during first European tour by 1st Lt. Kaseyann Cornwall U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Office Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna just concluded a series of meetings and visits in a multi-nation European tour designed to strengthen partnerships with allied space partners and assess U.S. Space Force operations across the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, July 15-27. The visit marked Bentivegna’s first official multi-nation tour of the EUCOM AOR since assuming the top enlisted position in the U.S. Space Force. Bentivegna’s travel began in the United Kingdom, followed with visits to Ramstein Air Base and Camp Darby, Italy. Throughout his meetings, he emphasized the importance of interoperability, integration and collective defense in the space domain alongside trusted allies and partners. “In the increasingly complex and contested space domain, collective defense is paramount; it’s a vast frontier where no single nation can operate effectively in isolation,” Bentivegna said. “To secure our shared interests and ensure space superiority, robust interoperability and seamless integration with our trusted allies and

This collaborative approach, leveraging our combined strengths, is how we will collectively address challenges and guarantee our security in, from, and to space.” The tour followed the U.S. Space Force’s July 8 unveiling of its inaugural International Partnership Strategy, a comprehensive vision for deepening allied collaboration to ensure a secure, stable, and sustainable space domain. Recognizing that no single nation can manage space alone, the strategy highlights the critical need for international cooperation and robust partnerships leveraging combined strengths. “The unveiling of our International Partnership Strategy just prior to this tour was no coincidence; it’s the very foundation upon which these engagements are built,” Bentivegna stated. “This strategy isn’t merely a document; it’s a living commitment to collective security, ensuring that our shared future in space is defended by the unified strength of our allies.” Throughout his travels, Bentivegna was joined by senior enlisted space leaders from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and NATO to strengthen joint effectiveness and foster international cooperation. Bentivegna attended the Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference in London and the Royal International Air Tattoo. He also visited the Royal Air Force bases at Waddington, High Wycombe, and Molesworth, further strengthening ties with the United Kingdom space counterparts. “This multi-nation tour truly underscored the U.S. Space Force’s global reach, allowing us to learn from and strengthen the vital partnerships essential for collective defense in the space domain,” he said. “It was also an invaluable opportunity to connect directly with our Guardians on the ground, whose dedication is vital to our national security.”

The group held key meetings with NATO Allied Air Command and U.S. Space Forces Europe and Africa and conducted in-depth discussions with Guardians at the 603rd Air Operations Center and critical operational detachments. The team also visited the 53rd Space Operations Squadron, Detachment 3 (Delta 8), and the 3rd Space Communications Squadron, Detachment (Delta 4). Bentivegna concluded his visit to Europe at Camp Darby, Italy, where he met with forwarddeployed Guardians supporting strategic operations in southern Europe. The tour reflected a focused effort to integrate the Space Force’s mission with NATO and allied priorities. As space continues to mature as a critical warfighting domain, these engagements bolster coalition readiness and interoperability. “As Guardians, we understand that our competitive advantage in space isn’t forged alone; it’s pro-

US Army correctional experts partner for Allied readiness during Defender 25 by 1st Lt. Kayley Phillips U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity-Europe U.S. Army Regional Cor­rection­ al Activity - Europe personnel partnered with the 709th Military Police Battalion and Croatian military police in May and June 2025 to share their expertise in operating a Theater Detention Facility, enhancing allied interoperability in support of Exercise Immediate Response 25. The exercise was part of U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s DEFENDER 25 exercise series. Ten USARCA-E team members deployed from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’ Sembach Kaserne to the TDF at Josip Jovic Barracks, Udbina, Croatia to provide realistic training scenarios for military intelligence investigators from the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade. The weeklong training featured 26 role players acting as detainees to test critical detention tasks including forced cell extraction techniques, emergency procedures, investigation protocols and instruction on the Geneva Conventions. The USARCA-E team integrated with Croatian military

police forces, fostering interoperability and strengthening the U.S.Croatian alliance through NATO. The TDF provided valuable training for MI investigators in a counterinsurgency environment and shed light on best practices for future detention operations in the European theater. Sgt. 1st Class David Diaz, 18th Military Police Brigade platoon sergeant, said the training highlighted the importance of integrating correctional specialists in detention operations. “We do it day in and day out and most skills transfer. It’s prison in a different environment,” Diaz said, emphasizing the applicability of correctional experience to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure legal and ethical standards. DEFENDER 25 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe, scheduled by U.S. European Command and conducted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa involving more than 25 Allied and partner nations. Immediate Response 25 is a U.S. Army large-scale exercise enhancing cyber and counterbiological, radiological, nucle-

ar (CBRN) defense capabilities, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) integration through state partnership readiness programs and multinational exercises to equip NATO’s regional plans and uphold U.S. commitments to the Alliance. Immediate Response 25 demonstrated multinational live fires conducted with NATO networks, a cyber exercise, water crossing, and CBRN exercises from May 26 - June 9, 2025, with over 12,000 participants and hosted in eight countries to include Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Slovakia. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz operates Sembach Kaserne, home to the U.S. Army Regional Correctional Activity FacilityEurope detention center. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder CYS Earns $32,500 in grants, advances tech, civic engagement programs Story by Mary Del Rosario U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’ Baumholder Child and Youth Services (CYS) continues its role as a pioneer in youth development, earning two major grants totaling $32,500 to grow its tech-based and community-focused programming. For the third year in a row, Baum­ holder CYS was selected for the Apple Com­ munity Education Initiative (CEI), securing a grant to expand the digital programming opportunities available to students enrolled in its programs. In addition, the Baumholder Youth Center received another grant through the national 9/11 Day Youth Engagement Service Project, one of only six sites selected from 13 applicants. The Apple grant will fund cutting-edge tools and learning experiences, giving Baumholder teens greater access to coding, creative projects, homework support and interactive gaming. It also covers travel for staff to Apple events in 2026, including the Code + Create Ambassador meeting, the National Conference and the Summit for America’s Youth. “Keeping up with technology is essential to building relevant, engaging programs that keep our teens coming back,” said Ryan Flynn, director of Baumholder CYS.

tance of Sept. 11, while creating a sense of shared purpose,” said Shakita Black, youth program assistant director, Baumholder CYS. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Garrison Commander Col. Jeffery C. Higgins commended the accomplishments of the Baumholder team and said that though Baumholder may be

small in size, its teen programs are making an outsize impact. “These grants are a direct result of the passion and professionalism of our CYS staff,” Higgins said. “Winning both grants is a tremendous achievement for Baumholder and a major benefit to our entire community. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz partners with Polizei, Air Force to test UAS response readiness by Jennifer Whitaker U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz teamed up with the U.S. Air Force 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron and 86th Security Forces Squadron from Ramstein Air Base and German Polizei July 16 to test its counter-unmanned aircraft systems capabilities and interagency communication networks in a realistic drone threat training exercise. During the exercise, operators from the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa’s Combat Training School flew a DJI Phantom 4 drone over USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’ installation near Miesau to simulate a drone threat, testing the operational capabilities of systems and processes currently in place, said Emily Roemer, an antiterrorism officer with USAG RheinlandPfalz Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security and the

lead planner for this exercise. The DJI Phantom 4 is a commercially-available small UAS, making it ideal for this type of training, Roemer said. Staff Sgt. Michael Sopha, noncommissioned officer in charge of cUAS for the 569th USFPS, said the Air Force’s primary role in the exercise was to respond alongside USAG Rheinland-Pfalz in the joint environment, using the most current available cUAS technology to detect and disrupt small UAS in the exercise area. Systems that were tested included small UAS detectors, signal disruptors and signal hijackers that protect friendly assets and render enemy systems ineffective, Sopha said. “This exercise showed the importance of a joint force working together to combat small UAS threats. Our procedures are sound,” he said. “Future small UAS capabilities will be far greater, supporting the need for alternative systems to

combat them on a large scale.” Roemer stressed the importance of seamless communication between law enforcement teams from the garrison, the Air Force and the local community. “Host nation response during a real-world event is critical,” Roemer said. “The Army likes to train how we fight, so we knew getting host nation participation for this exercise was a must.” USAG Rheinland-Pfalz police chief DJ Diallo noted that working in partnership with German Polizei gives the garrison access to a wider network of security resources, ensuring a robust, resilient security posture. “The lines between civilian and military airspace are increasingly blurred, demanding seamless information sharing and coordinated responses,” Diallo said. “Without robust international cooperation between Polizei and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DES, we risk critical gaps in our ability to detect, deter, and respond to dronerelated threats.” He added that the garrison, Polizei and Air Force security forces routinely collaborate to improve response capabilities in

Roemer noted that planning the counter-UAS training event with so many joint partners was not without challenges. “Ensuring that the exercise injects were realistic and involved all the joint partners was probably the biggest challenge,” Roemer said. “All the joint partners exhibited enthusiasm and eagerness to participate, which shows we have built positive relationships and shared trust between all parties.” As part of the Army Trans­ for­ mation Initiative, the U.S. Army is investing in technologies including artificial intelligence, autonomy and counter-drone systems to outpace future threats faced at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz installations. New in command, 7 MSC’s top leader receives capabilities briefing from 405 AFSB Story & photos by Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support Brigade Europe & Africa Underscoring the importance of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s incredibly complex mission supporting U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the 7th Mission Support Command’s new commanding general visited the 405th AFSB and received a capabilities briefing by the brigade command team and primary staff at the 405th AFSB headquarters on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. Army Brig. Gen. John P. Stanley assumed command of the only U.S. Army Reserve command stationed in Europe at the end of June and less than a month later, on July 25, 2025, he was seated in the 405th AFSB’s main conference room discussing brigade operations in support of his command and the entire USAREUR-AF area of responsibility. “There are a lot of partnerships that I would offer on the Reserve component side that if you want to leverage, let me know,” said Stanley, who is also the deputy commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “Sixty days in, 90 days in [into a conflict] is typically when the wheels come off and the bearings go out. You’re going to need that additional support.” “I would suggest that you look at the harder challenge of not what’s in front of you today but what’s likely going to be in front of you 60 days in, 90 days into a conflict. How are you going to leverage the capabilities and the power of the Army Reserve,” Stanley said. Before coming to Germany and taking command of the 7th MSC, Stanley served as the deputy commanding general of the 75th U.S. Army Reserve Innovation Command in Houston, Texas. Originally from Auburndale,

Florida, Stanley also served as the commander of the 55th Sustainment Brigade. The 7th MSC is comprised of approximately 1,000 Army Reserve Soldiers assigned to more than two dozen units. It supports USAREUR-AF operations and works in close coordination with NATO allies and host nation partners to ensure interoperability, logistics readiness and mission support across the European theater. The 7th MSC remains the U.S. Army Reserve’s forward presence in Europe, providing trained, ready and deployable units to support joint and coalition missions across the U.S. European Command area of responsibility. C-130J Super Hercules gains second wind after repairs at Ramstein

by Senior Airman Tabatha Chapman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base had the unique privilege to give one of its own a second chance to fly. During a training sortie in April 2020, C-130J Super Hercules, tail number 5736, experienced a hard landing event that damaged the structural integrity of the wings, engines and landing gear assemblies, rendering it unable to fly. “The project really started when the program office took a look at the hard landing and the specifications and decided that it would be more cost effective to return the aircraft to the fleet rather than to retire it completely,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Lucas Buckley, 86th Maintenance Group command-

er. “Between the engineers, planners and technicians, taking the steps to put the aircraft back together was the best investment for the Air Force.” Over the course of four years, new wings were constructed along with first-of-itskind C-130J wing transport containers. The new wings were transported to Ramstein AB where the 402nd Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron depot team from Robins Air Force Base, Ga. and the 86th Maintenance Group spent over 30 days replacing the wings, engines and other main components of the aircraft. There has never been a wing replacement of a J Model series C-130 on the field. There were a lot of helping hands working to return the aircraft to flying standards, explained Buckley. It was a collaboration across the Air Force with planning, engineer-

ing, handling and shipping of the wings from the United States to Ramstein Air Base. “This project has proven a great deal about the Air Force’s capabilities, most notably, its resilience, technical expertise, and commitment to operational excellence,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Justin Jordan, 86th Maintenance Group quality assurance superintendent. “Ultimately, this project reaffirmed the Air Force isn’t just about advanced technology. It’s about the people who make that technology work. It’s about grit, discipline and the unwavering belief that no aircraft is beyond saving when the mission demands it.” It was a complete team effort from the C-130 program office, engineers, depot, MAJCOM staff and of the maintainers of the 86th that have taken care of the aircraft for

the past 5 years, Jordan said. After months of planning, executing and repairs, the aircraft accomplished its first test flight in five years on July 15, 2025. After a couple more tweaks and checks later, Aircraft 5736 was finally able to make the trek back home to the USA in the morning of July 28. “Watching her lift off the runway felt like watching a dream take flight. It wasn’t just a mechanical achievement, it was a deeply personal moment,” explained Jordan. “Aircraft 5736 became more than just a machine to us; she represented resilience, history and the spirit of aviation. That first flight was a tribute to everyone who believed in her and worked tirelessly to bring her back to life. I’ll never forget the sound of her engines roaring to life and the sight of her wheels leaving the ground. It was magic!”

The North Sea along the west coast offers sandy shores and islands such as Wangerooge, Borkum, Norderney and trendy Sylt, Germany’s most northern island. The Baltic Sea to the east has a variety of beautiful beaches along the coast, several fashionable seaside resorts, and Germany’s largest island Rügen. The only drawback is that all the sandy sites may be a good choice for an extended weekend, but just too far away for an afternoon refreshment. The good news is that Kaiserslautern and the surrounding county offer a variety of swimming and bathing opportunities, ideal for all ages and preferences. Here are some notable spots: Kaiserslautern Freibad Wasch­ müh­le: Known locally as “Wesch,” this historic outdoor pool is one of the largest in the region. It features a vast water area of 7,200 square meters and a sunbathing area of 25,000 square meters. It’s a popular spot for families and those looking to enjoy a sunny day by the pool. Warmfreibad Kaiserslautern: This heated outdoor pool is another great option, offering a range of facilities including a large swimming pool, diving boards, and a children’s pool. It’s open from May to September and provides a comfortable swimming experience even on cooler days.

Ramstein Azur: Family friendliness is particularly important at the AZUR. Children up to three years of age have free entry to the swimming pool when accompanied by their parents. There are paddling areas for the youngest visitors both in the inner area of the ​​ pool and in the outdoor pool. For hot summer days there is a swimming pool with a length of 50 meters in the outdoor pool, as well as an adjacent non-swimmer area. A separate diving pool offers space for brave jumpers. The spacious sunbathing lawn rounds off the offer for the summer. Naturerlebnisbad Landstuhl: The beautifully landscaped beach area is popular. Children and adults alike particularly enjoy spending time there. The older ones help the little ones with digging, building castles or just watching and enjoying the day. Depending on your ability, you can splash around and swim in the naturally fresh water. Experienced swimmers prefer the swimming area to hone their technique and endurance. Hohenecken Gelterswoog: For those who prefer natural settings, Gelterswoog is a beautiful lake located just outside Kaiserslautern. It’s perfect for swimming and picnicking. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a serene escape from the city. There are also facilities for paddle boating and a beach area for sunbathing. Naturfreibad Otterberg: This natural pool uses a chemical-free system, offering a unique swimming experience in pure spring water.. A short drive from Kaiserslautern, it offers a more rustic experience. It’s surrounded by nature and provides a peaceful environment for swimming and rejuvenating.

Warmfreibad Trippstadt: A large, green grassy area surrounds 2,000 square meters of water that invites guests to splish and splash, play water games or simply just swim. Waldfreibad Rodenbach: A heated forest pool with six lanes, a slide, a baby pool, and a kiosk. There are spacious areas to sunbathe and relax, there is a small restaurant, and the facility is equipped with a high dive and a kids’ pool area. Freibad Alsenborn: The pool was renovated a few years ago and offers a fun slide, a large basin with diving boards, a separate children’s pool and plenty of shady places to relax and enjoy. Freibad Mehlingen: Another outdoor pool near Sembach that is somewhat simpler than Alsenborn, but less crowded on hot summer days. Natur-Erlebnisbad Rocken­hau­ sen: The unique swimming facility offers a natural swimming experience without the use of chemicals. It features various swimming and bathing areas, a beach volleyball court, a large lawn for sunbathing and a kiosk. The water is treated using biological and mechanical processes, making it suitable for young children and people with sensitive skin. It includes a swimmer’s pool with 25 and 50-meter lanes, a non-swimmer area with a pebble beach and grotto, a children’s paddling pool, and a 60-meter water slide. One natural lake near Sembach is also worth a mention: Eiswoog: Eiswoog is a picturesque lake located near Ramsen, about 30 kilometers

north of Kaiserslautern, driving through the forest towards Eisenberg. It is a tranquil spot surrounded by dense forests, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat. The lake is great for swimming, fishing, and hiking. There is also a charming hotel and restaurant nearby, offering a lovely place to stay or enjoy a meal with a view of the lake. The narrow-gauge railway Stumpfwaldbahn offers short rides on weekends during the season. But beware: the name says it all “Eiswoog” means ice lake and the fresh water is extremely cold! Last, but not least, if you’re willing to drive a bit further, there are three bathing sites west of Kaiserslautern well worth a visit: Vitalbad Pfälzer Bergland/Kusel: In addition to the swimmers’ pool, bathers at the outdoor pool have access to the play and fun pool with a wild water channel, cascading water showers, floor and wall bubblers and massage jets, as well as a water mushroom and a wide slide. Little bathers can have fun in the paddling pool or at the water playground. Bostalsee: Located about 40 kilometers southwest of Kaiserslautern, Bostalsee is a large, popular recreational lake. It offers a variety of activities including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The area around the lake is well-developed with beaches, camping sites, and hiking trails, making it a great destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway. A visit to the Celtic village in Steinbach AT Donnersberg is like a fascinating journey into the mystical world of the early Donnersberg inhabitants. Jerry Millan, a Special Operations Command master sergeant and competitor for Team U.S., competes in indoor rowing during the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, Feb. 16. Fifty competitors make up Team U.S., which is competing along with 22 other nations in the 2025 Invictus Games. Throughout the competition, events will take place in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada, from Feb. 8-16. The competition includes 11 different events, including six adaptive winter sports, the first year that winter-specific sports have been part of the Invictus Games competition. The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured, and ill active duty and veteran military personnel. The Games use the power of sport to support recovery, rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. They gave his mother a place to stay during treatment, arranged flights, and later linked him to educational resources and a staff position to let him continue serving while he healed. They made sure his mother could focus on him and not on logistics. “She didn’t have to worry about anything,” Millan said. “She could just focus on me.” After his chemotherapy rounds, doctors declared him cancer-free.

August 1, 2025 Finding New Strength Through Sports Millan looked for what was next and returned to serving — yet struggled to navigate what his new duty looked like while in recovery. “I felt like they really had no use for me. They had people that were deployable and ready to go. And I can’t. That’s reality.” Through his experience with WCP-CC, he decided to join the USSOCOM Warrior Care Program’s Military Adaptive Sports team. “The Military Adaptive Sports program provided me the opportunity to find a new purpose in life by helping others going through similar situations,” he said. “They helped me find a new community.” He trained for powerlifting, rowing, sitting volleyball, track and field, and precision air sports. At his first DOD Warrior Games in 2022, he balanced competition with duty, commuting between his events in Orlando and his assignment at MacDill Air Force BaseGoes to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The camaraderie hooked him. “Once I got to participate and train with the other athletes that were there, I learned about their stories and the things they’re going through,” he said. “It’s like, wow, you know, there are other people out there in the military community … that all have their struggles, and they are facing their adversity.” “Then I ended up finding this new community,” Millan added, “I didn’t realize how badly I needed that.” He was invited to participate in the 2025 Invictus Games, where he took Gold in row-

ing. The togetherness, teamwork, and community inspired his second promise. ‘I Got You’ In the 2025 games, Millan will again wear Team SOCOM colors. He qualified for the “Ultimate Champion” category, a grueling slate of every individual event: powerlifting, cycling, swimming, archery, shooting, rowing, track and field, and volleyball. He uses his experience to help service members who are struggling, recruiting new athletes, visiting recovery units, and offering virtual coaching

to anyone who needs it. He shares his message of recovery and support to uplift others. “If you’re a teammate of mine, I got you,” he stresses. “I will come to you and walk you through the things that helped me. I’ll do this with you. I’ll tell them this is what I did that helped me. I didn’t follow a guided path. I didn’t have someone walking me through it. But if you’re in my community … I got you.” Health and Fitness Key to Recovery As the WCP-CC East Region noncommissioned officer in charge, he is a liaison to

U.S. Army Special Operations Command and visits the Soldier Recovery Unit twice a week. He demonstrates workouts, shares nutrition tips, and, most importantly, listens. “I learn about their stories and the stuff they’re going through,” Millan said. “I say, ‘here are the things that helped me to get through what I was going through.’ Maybe what I’ve learned in my own journey that could possibly help.” “I just embrace it, and they embrace. That helps amplify any type of recovery,” he added. To continue to keep his own health in check, he trains. He believes movement builds mood and resilience. A chemotherapyinduced heart issue demands top fitness, so he lifts, rows, and runs often. “To build resilience, you have to build a routine,” he said. “Maybe you start with walking 20 minutes a day. Then it builds from there. Your body is meant to move.” For him, exercise helps his mental health. “My mood and my attitude are directly tied to how I feel.” Millan maintains annual needed checkups through the care of his MHS team. “I get labs and then I have specialty care for my heart,” he said. “I’m able to use these specialty clinics to help with issues I’m having from chemotherapy right on base.” Millan refuses to let cancer define him, but it does define his new outlook — living by a new mantra: “There’s more I want to do in life,” he said. “And I’m not done yet.”

Swim or stroll on Stralsund Beach In Stralsund, nature is never very far away. A ten minute walk on the Sundpromenade will take you straight from the charming city center to Stralsund Beach (https://www. stralsundtourismus.de/poi/strandbad-stralsund), or the “Lido” as it is called there. Nestled between vibrant green trees and the glistening Baltic Sea, a nearly 1 km long sandy beach with slides and climbing equipment is available for families and beach lovers alike. There is a beach volleyball court and a snack bar, making it a fantastic place to enjoy a full day outside. It is important to note that there is no direct parking at the beach but it is a quick bus ride, walk, or bike ride along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route to get there.
