Thirty years after the crash of Implementation Force-21, the 76th Airlift Squadron marked the milestone anniversary with a weeklong series of events honoring the 35 souls aboard who lost their lives on April 3, 1996, near Dubrovnik, Croatia.
The commemoration, which included a training day, a formal remembrance ceremony and a trip to the crash site, reflected the squadron’s enduring commitment to preserving the memory and lessons of the accident that claimed the lives of the Airmen of the 76th AS.
“It’s important for us to honor our fallen crew members each and every year, not only because it makes us better aircrew and keeps us humble, but because it also keeps their legacy alive,” said Lt. Col. Bryan Gibbs, 76th Airlift Squadron commander. “The mission they were doing back then is the same mission we are doing and seeing now.”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Theodore Dudley, 603rd Air Operations Center intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assessments technician, wasn’t thinking about awards. He wasn’t thinking about recognition, or the risk.
“I just felt like I was doing the right thing,” Dudley said.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 3, 2025, that instinct would guide him through smoke-filled hallways, up darkened stairwells, and into a defining moment that would ultimately earn him recognition as the 2026 United Service Organizations Airman of the Year.
Dudley had only been asleep for about an hour when the alarm went off. At first, it didn’t register.
“I thought it was just my phone,” he said.
Then his eyes started to burn.
When he lifted his head, the room was already filled with smoke, thick enough to swallow the light from the television still flickering in the background.
“Everything above the TV was just black,” he said. “You could barely see anything.”
His heart started racing. But there was no time to process it. Dudley didn’t stop to think, he just moved.
He grabbed a shirt, soaked it, and tied it around his face to help filter the smoke. He scooped up his two cats, zipped them into a bag and stepped into the hallway.
That’s when he realized something was wrong. No one else was coming out.
So instead of heading for the exit, Dudley started knocking, then pounding on doors.
“It was loud. You could probably hear it from a mile away,” he said.
Residents slowly emerged, confused and frightened, some still half asleep, others unsure of what was happening. Many didn’t speak English. One elderly woman struggled to breathe as smoke filled the corridor.
Without hesitation, Dudley helped lift and guide her, working through the language barrier to communicate a simple message: there was a fire, and they needed to get out.
Once people began moving toward safety, Dudley could have left with them. Instead, he turned back.
“I wasn’t really thinking,” he said. “It was just autopilot.”
He entered the stairwell, already thick with smoke, and began climbing.
Floor by floor, he searched for anyone still inside, banging on doors and calling out into the darkness. On the upper levels, he found

residents frozen in fear, unsure if escape was even possible.
“I was just trying to let them know, ‘we can get out’,” he said.
The smoke made it hard to see, harder to breathe. The descent was slow and dangerous. People tripped on the stairs. On each floor, they stopped briefly on open balconies to get air before continuing.
Then the temperature changed.
“It started getting really hot,” Dudley said.
A glow appeared below them, orange and unmistakable. The fire was waiting at the bottom.
Despite the growing heat and thickening smoke, Dudley kept moving, guiding residents down the stairwell. When they reached the lower floors, the fire came into view, a couch engulfed in flames, lighting the entryway. Heat pressed in as they passed, staying low and close together, pushing through the
smoke toward the only way out.
“It felt like forever,” he said. “But it was probably less than five minutes.”
And still, one by one, they made it out.
Outside, rain began to fall. Dudley stood soaked, his white hoodie now blackened with soot, his face and hands covered in smoke residue.
Most people would have stopped there. He didn’t.
Knowing where a fire extinguisher was located, Dudley went back into the building a second time. He retrieved it and helped extinguish the flames before first responders arrived.
But even then, his role in the night wasn’t over.
As he moved through the building earlier, Dudley had used his phone’s flashlight to see, unknowingly recording video at the same time. That footage later became key evidence
for German police investigating the fire.
“It just so happened to be recording,” he said.
Combined with his observations, the video helped authorities identify and detain a suspected arsonist at the scene.
Only after everything slowed down did the weight of what happened begin to settle in.
“I don’t think I felt fear until afterwards,” Dudley said. “At the time, it was just… doing.”
That mindset didn’t come from a checklist or a plan.
In fact, Dudley said he had never experienced anything like it before. But at that moment, lessons from years earlier in basic fire safety learned in school resurfaced just enough to guide him.
Still, what drove him wasn’t training.
“I was more focused on other people rather than myself,” he said.
It’s a simple statement, but one that reflects the core of Air Force values—service before self—lived out in real time.
In the weeks after the fire, Dudley’s leadership submitted him for the USO Service Member of the Year award at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa level.
He won. Then came another surprise. Dudley opened an email that stopped him in his tracks.
“I was just reading it, and my eyes got bigger,” he said. “I was like, ‘I just won Service Member of the Year.’”
The USO Service Member of the Year award is reserved for those who embody the very heart of military service, honoring one member from each branch whose actions reflect extraordinary courage, leadership and unwavering commitment to others.
Now recognized as the 2026 USO Airman of the Year, Dudley is still processing what it all means.
Before the Air Force, Dudley describes himself as a different person—quick-tempered, outspoken, still figuring things out.
Over time, that changed.
“I’ve matured into a different person,” he said.
Today, that growth shows not just in crisis, but in his everyday life, whether serving as an intel analyst or competing nationally in powerlifting.
Still, when asked what drove him to act that night, his answer remains simple.
“I just felt like it was the right thing to do.”
And in the end, that’s exactly what made the difference.
Dudley attended the USO Service Member of the Year Awards Ceremony Gala in Washington, D.C., yesterday.
3, 1996, while transporting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown and his delegation on a diplomatic mission between the U.S. and Croatia in the aftermath of regional conflict, the aircraft impacted high terrain while attempting an instrument approach into Dubrovnik airport. All 35 people on board perished.
The accident prompted sweeping Air Force safety improvements that fundamentally changed how military aircraft operate, establishing new standards and requirements that have since protected countless aircrew and passengers on missions around the world.
“We look at the safety investigation report, the accident, numbers and data, a timeline and visuals, that way you can’t shy away,” said Shannon Murphy, 86th Airlift Wing historian. “It’s not just one incident or one thing that happened in the wrong way. It’s a series of events that led to the crash.”
Murphy said that looking at the facts is what allows the squadron to move from analysis to genuine remembrance, honoring the crew not as a case study, but as people.
“The best kind of memory is remembering how they lived, how they died, and how
we have chosen to integrate their memories into our personal and professional lives,” said Murphy. “It’s important that we remember not only what they gave, but what we learned from it.”
The formal ceremony on April 9, included remarks from squadron leadership, a wreath laying at the IFO-21 memorial, a letter read on behalf of one of the crew members’ widows, and a C-21A flyover. The following day, members of the 76th AS flew to Croatia aboard a C-37 and C-21 before hiking to the crash site, where a large cross memorial bears the names of all 35 people who perished.
“To remember IFO-21 is to remember any crew that we’ve lost,” said Murphy. “We volunteer knowing that we could very well find ourselves in situations we never thought we would be in. If we keep talking about what happened, it makes sure that their memory stays close.”
Thirty years later, the crew of IFO-21 remains present in the way the 76th AS operates, in every preflight check, every risk assessment, every mission flown.
“What we do today is very clearly something that they did back then,” said Gibbs. “It makes me very proud to be a part of this squadron, continuing to execute our mission the way we do.”

The 86th Force Support Squadron hosted a Month of the Military Child event at Ramstein Air Base, April 12.
The event brought together agencies, volunteers and families from across the Kaiserslautern Military Community to recognize the resilience and contributions of military children.
The annual event is part of the Department of War’s nationwide observance of MOMC, established in 1986 to honor the more than 1.6 million children who grow up in military families. Each month, installations across the world highlight the challenges young people face due to frequent relocations, deployments and the demands of military life.
This year’s official theme is “Strength in Every Story.” The theme emphasizes the bravery, fearlessness and resiliency shown by military children as they navigate changing environments.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Katherine Kuc, 86th FSS commander, signed a proclamation during the event, reaffirming the squadron’s commitment to providing resources that strengthen the mental, physical and educational wellbeing of youth throughout the KMC.
The event brought together a wide range of programs that serve military families. Agencies included Girl Scouts of the USA, the Exceptional Family Member Program,
Educational Developmental Intervention Services, Family Child Care, Ramstein High School Robotics team, The Ramstein Library, Military and Family Readiness Center and many others.
Event supporters said gathering these organizations into one place helps families understand what resources are available to them.
“This really pulls from all corners of our community,” said Christina Morris, 86th FSS lead training and curriculum specialist. “All of these programs help support and empower our kids and families.”
Her peer, Sara Thompson, 86th FSS Child Development Center and Family Childcare program manager, echoed that sentiment.
“When everything is in one spot, parents meet the people who work with their kids every day,” Thompson said. “It’s about showing families they’re not alone and that this community is ready to help them succeed.”
The celebration featured performances from youth center instructional programs, including dance and martial arts demonstrations. Armed Forces Entertainment hosted its Capes and Crowns princess and prince show, offering meet-and-greets throughout the afternoon.
Keystone teen volunteers operated craft stations and a photo booth, while other teams staffed game areas, giveaways and informational tables.
This event reflects the KMC’s commitment to create supportive environments for children whose lives are impacted by the service of military members.

Frankfurt Airport — A centennial flight through time
Most visitors get their first impression of Germany as they descend into Frankfurt International Airport: lush countryside, the Main River, and a glimpse of the city’s skyline. After a seemingly endless taxi to the terminal, a long line at immigration, scurrying to baggage claim amongst the hustle and bustle of one of Europe’s most busy airports, to then pass customs, you will finally be greeted by family, friends or sponsors. Welcome to Frankfurt!
From vineyard landing strip to Rebstock airfield
Aviation’s civilian chapter in Frankfurt began after World War I. In July 1924 the Südwestdeutsche Luftverkehrs AG opened the Rebstock airfield — a simple grass strip set among vineyards, which gave it the name Rebstock (grapevine). Small Junkers twin-engined aircraft carried mail and passengers to Munich, Stuttgart and Cologne, establishing the early routes and rhythms that would evolve into Germany’s busiest air hub.
Zeppelins, the Weltflughafen and the Hindenburg
By the mid-1930s Rebstock’s grass fields were no longer adequate. Authorities built a purpose - designed Flug - und Luftschiffhafen Rhein - Main, complete with a vast Zeppelinhalle. On July 8,1936, the new airport opened as a Weltflughafen (world airport). Lufthansa began fixed-wing services with Ju 52 trimotors while the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg operated from the giant hall. Graf Zeppelin’s regular South Atlantic sailings linked Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro and Lakehurst, carrying mail and passengers on a tightly coordinated schedule. The era of passenger airships ended abruptly after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. The Zeppelin hall was repurposed for military use as Europe moved toward war.
War, reconstruction and the Gateway to Europe
After 1945 the airfield was rebuilt under Allied control. U.S. Army engineers converted the site into a major transport hub; Rhein-Main Air Base was established as Advanced Landing Ground Y-73 in April 1945. The base hosted fighter and transport squadrons and became known as USAFE’s “Gateway to Europe.”
Frankfurt’s strategic role was cemented during the Berlin Airlift (June 1948–September 1949). With land access to West Berlin cut off, Rhein-Main served as a primary staging point for C-54 and C-47 flights that delivered food and coal to isolated Berliners — a defining moment that underscored the airport’s logistical importance in the early Cold War.
Jet Age expansion and new runways
Commercial traffic surged in the post-war decades. By 1960 Frankfurt recorded some 2.2 million passengers, and runway use by both military and civilian aircraft became increasingly difficult to coordinate. To enable simultaneous operations, a second parallel runway (07R/25L) was constructed between 1968 and 1972 and opened on Oct. 12,1972. At 4,000 × 60 meters, it allowed true parallel take-offs and landings for the first time.
Runway lengths and pavements were progressively extended through the 1950s and 1960s to accommodate ever-larger jets. Continued growth later required additional runways and infrastructure upgrades.
Startbahn West: Environmental protest and social change
The proposal for a third runway, Startbahn West (18 West), ignited one of post-war Germany’s most intense environmental and civil - rights conflicts. The airport operator applied for expansion as early as December 1965, but by 1979 organized opposition had coalesced into the Bürgerinitiative gegen die Flughafenerweiterung Rhein-Main. The dispute transformed a technical approval into a national battleground for the emerging environmental movement, drawing support from the newly formed Greens Party.
When clearing began in 1980, activists built a permanent Hüttendorf (hut village) to block tree-felling. Over months, squatters, farmers and left-wing groups staged sit-ins and nightly demonstrations; clashes with police escalated into street battles. The
hut village was forcibly evacuated on Nov. 2, 1981, and mass rallies followed. Startbahn West opened under heavy police protection on April 12, 1984, with Lufthansa’s Airbus “Lüneburg” making the first commercial departure. The delay, security and compensation costs exceeded 225 million Deutsche Marks.
Although large-scale protests subsided, ongoing demonstrations and a fatal shooting in 1987 led to long-term noise-abatement measures. Today, 18 West handles roughly 30 percent of Frankfurt’s flights.
Noise management and operational procedures
To balance growth with community impact, Frankfurt has implemented strict noise and operational controls. Since 2015 the airport enforces seven-hour noise breaks combining a night curfew. Technical procedures also reduce noise: since 2012 runways support a 3.2° ILS/GBAS approach (instead of the standard 3.0°), keeping aircraft higher for longer over residential areas. RNP (Required Navigation Performance) departure paths and alternating runway use further concentrate traffic over industrial zones and spread noise impacts. Airlines face noise-related surcharges for louder aircraft, and runway rotations are used to distribute disturbance more evenly.

A fourth, northern runway opened in 2011 (2,800 meters) and is used primarily for landings; drivers on the autobahn from Mainz can see wide-body jets crossing a bridge as they approach.
Rhein-Main Transition and the end of an era
For six decades Rhein-Main Air Base hosted U.S. Military Airlift Command and USAFE operations. In December 1999 the U.S. and German governments agreed on the Rhein-Main Transition Program, relocating airlift capabilities to Ramstein and Spangdahlem and returning the site to German control. The final USAF aircraft left Sep. 26, 2005, and military control ended on Dec. 30, 2005. Ramstein assumed the “Gateway to Europe” role, and a second southern runway opened for service on Jan. 1, 2007.
A century of Lufthansa
Terminals, rail links and FRAPORT Infrastructure continued to expand: Terminal 2 opened in 1994, and a dedicated long-distance Fernbahnhof next to Terminal 1 began service on May 30, 1999, linking the airport directly to Germany’s rail network. In 2001 Flughafen Frankfurt/ Main AG rebranded as FRAPORT AG, which has since grown into a global airport manager operating across four continents.
In 2026, Lufthansa celebrates a significant anniversary: on January 6, 1926, the first “Luft Hansa” was founded, and by April 6 of the same year, it had already made its first flight. This anniversary is not only a look back at the history of one of the best-known brands in aviation but also an important step into the future. It is a tribute to the pioneering spirit, innovation, and the connection of people, cultures, and economies that Lufthansa has embodied for a century. The story began with the founding of the first Lufthansa, which was formed from the merger of Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutscher Aero Lloyd.
Innovation and renovation
Fraport’s Terminal 3, sited on the former air base grounds (south and opposite Terminals 1 and 2), is slated to open before the summer 2026 season. Designed to handle 19 million passengers across three piers, it will feature a 6,000 m² marketplace with about 65 shops and eateries, daylight-filled concourses, play zones, work lounges and panoramic apron views. Connectivity will include an eight-minute people mover (Skyline) from Terminal 1, direct road access, 8,500 parking spaces and bicycle facilities.
Terminal 3 with concourses G, H and J will officially open on April 22. Flight services are expected to commence on April 23, with up to 57 airlines currently operating from Terminal 2, which will then undergo renovation and re-open upon completion.
Airlines will relocate in four phases. Affected carriers include American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Korean Air. For further details and travel advisory see UNTERWEGS.
Safe travels wherever they may lead you and enjoy Frankfurt’s new and innovative travel concept!

As a 68T Animal Care Specialist, she represents a growing cohort of Soldiers who are redefining what it means to serve, balancing operational demands with family life and personal advancement.
Bermudez, who enlisted in 2019, did not begin her Army career in veterinary medicine. Initially trained as a combat engineer, she entered the service expecting a path centered on demolitions. Instead, her early experience, shaped by the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, required flexibility.
After graduating from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, she reported to her first duty station at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where she worked in route clearance operations and steadily assumed increasing responsibility. By the time she departed, she had advanced to specialist, serving as a master driver and team leader.
The transition to veterinary services in 2022 marked a return to a longstanding personal goal.
“I always wanted to be a vet tech,” Bermudez said. “I like helping animals and being the voice, they don’t have.”
In 2023, she arrived in Baumholder, where her role quickly expanded beyond clinical duties.
Within a short period, Bermudez was placed in positions of significant responsibility, including serving as a noncommissioned officer in charge. Colleagues describe her leadership style as direct and approachable, with a consistent

emphasis on safety and accountability. Bermudez said she prioritizes mentorship, particularly for junior Soldiers.
“I enjoy teaching people and helping them learn something new,” she said. “That’s something I make time for.”
Her professional scope extends into the broader military community. Bermudez regularly participates in town halls and garrison events and plays an active role in organizing training. She recently helped coordinate three international Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care events, bringing together partners to strengthen readiness and interoperability.
These responsibilities coincide with major milestones in her personal life. In January 2023,
Bermudez learned she was expecting a child; she gave birth in August of the same year. At the same time, she began pursuing an associate degree, adding academic demands to an already full schedule.
Much of that work takes place

after hours. “After my child goes to bed, that’s when I focus on school,” she said. While she acknowledges that time management can be a challenge, she has developed strategies to stay on track. “I make lists and turn things into a competition with myself,” she said.
Bermudez credits her ability to manage competing priorities to a strong support system at home. Part of a dual-military household, she described her husband as a critical partner in maintaining balance. “If I can’t give 100 percent, he’ll pick up the rest,” she said. “That support makes everything possible.”
Despite the demands of her current role, Bermudez is focused on long-term goals. She expects to complete her associate degree soon and plans to become a licensed veterinary technician. Looking ahead, she hopes to attend veterinary school and return to the Army as a commissioned officer.
Her outlook reflects a broader perspective on service and adaptability.
“The Army teaches you how to work through different situations and adjust,” she said. “It’s an organization that continues to change with the times.”
For Bermudez, the most meaningful aspect of her work lies in its impact, whether through patient care, mentorship or everyday interactions. “You have an effect on people, even in small ways,” she said. “Something as simple as saying ‘good morning’ can make a difference.”
As she continues to navigate the demands of military service, education and family life, Bermudez’s trajectory underscores a consistent theme: a willingness to take on challenges, adapt quickly and invest in others along the way.

The 86th Operations Support Squadron hosted the European Airborne Airlift Conference at Ramstein Air Base, March 30 - April 3. This brought together approximately 100 personnel across 14 NATO countries to strengthen interoperability across airborne, airlift, aeromedical and maintenance communities.
The biannual conference provides a forum for NATO partners to exchange ideas, develop training opportunities and improve their ability to operate in conjunction across the European theatre.
“Interoperability is the backbone of modern defense and power projection in Europe,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Sean Andrews, 86th OSS director of strategic communications. “It’s not just a technical requirement but a strategic imperative that turns collective defense from a promise into a credible capability.”
The weeklong conference included briefings, discussions and cultural exchanges aimed at addressing shared challenges and aligning multinational capabilities. Talking points focused on improving coordination across different aircraft, expanding joint training opportunities and overcoming limitations
such as restricted airspace and differing national procedures.
“These trainings are important because it increases interoperability, directly working hand in hand during an operation helps us learn each other’s procedures and get comfortable working together in high stress operational environments,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Griffith, 435th Contingency Response Group personnel parachute program manager. “If a conflict or situation ever happens when we need to work together, we are ready because of these opportunities.”
The conference builds on previous European Airborne Airlift Conferences that led to joint training efforts across Europe. This included participation in multinational exercises and coordinated airdrop operations. These efforts continue to enhance NATO’s ability to respond quickly and effectively in complex scenarios.
“Each year, we return with fewer gaps between us and our allies,” Andrews said. “That steady progress turns our shared commitment into a force that is ready and capable whenever and wherever it’s needed.”
The conference reinforces NATO’s commitment to collective defense by ensuring allied forces can operate seamlessly together, increasing readiness and strengthening deterrence across the alliance.
Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force Capt. Ramon Van Belzen, head of aeromedical evacuation, speaks at the European Airborne Airlift Conference 26-01 at Ramstein Air Base, April 1. The conference gave a chance to cross-communicate effective strategic airlift capabilities which are vital to ensuring NATO Allies and partners are able to deploy their forces and equipment rapidly in support of operations.

Every mission starts with the ground beneath it. Geo Base Airmen within the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron are mapping, measuring and shaping data into a usable framework for missions.
Working daily to provide ground surveys, collecting elevation data and designing blueprints tied to the installation’s infrastructure. They use the data they’ve collected to build detailed maps and digital products in-turn leaders use to respond, build and plan contingency missions.
“We hold all the maps and infrastructure data,” said Staff Sgt. Carlo Devora, 86th CES geo base non-commissioned officer.
“Before anything happens, we set the foundation. That feeds into planning and funding decisions.”
Geo Base also tracks facility utilities, information and space usage to ensure resources, funding and projects stay aligned with the wing’s priorities.
“You see the finished facility,”
he said. “We see the layers underneath that made it possible.”
A key aspect of their mission happens alongside the German local nationals and civilian partners, who bring long-term experience and technical knowledge to the shop.
Senior Airman Bea Angel Gerundio, 86th Civil Engineer geo base apprentice, said working with them has shaped how she approaches the job.
“I’ve learned different ways to do things,” said Gerundio. “It makes you better.”
Core partnerships help keep projects on track and relationships strong across the installation. Together, they are mapping out airfields to supporting damage repair and contingency missions, by turning raw terrain into usable data for teams across Ramstein.
“It feels good knowing what you built is actually being used,” Gerundio said.
If you know where to step, where to build and where NOT to dig that means Geo Base already did their job.

“Building a sustainable society is the critical challenge of this century. Everything depends on it.” (Senator Nelson, Founder, Earth Day) The event was so successful that in December 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Americans began honoring Earth Day April 22 every year.
In 1990, Earth Day went global in 141
countries, and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. Earth Day will turn 55 this year with 192 countries and over one billion people around the globe expected to participate.
Earth Day goals: More than just spreading awareness! Environmental protection is especially important with the consequences of climate change becoming more apparent. Scientists
worldwide have proclaimed the need for immediate action. News outlets showcase larger and more frequent natural catastrophes such as floods, storms and tornadoes. Communities need to rethink consumer behavior to prevent an ecological crisis. Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Everyone can make incremental adjustments without experiencing a significant impact on daily life. “Sustainable consumerism” is a movement occurring in e.g., Europe and the U.S. which promotes purchasing goods that are manufactured responsibly with minimal waste. A large supermarket provides goods that
are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation. Why not change the demand signal by going to a local farmer’s market? Farmer’s markets require minimal resources to produce goods that provide benefits to the consumers. Did you know that many nearby cities such as Kaiserslautern hold regular farmers markets? Other simple lifestyle changes include changing your conventional light bulbs to energy-saving LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. LEDs are 80 percent more efficient and last up to 10 times longer. Replacing 10 fluorescent bulbs with LEDs saves $25

annually in electrical costs and prevents 14kg of carbon emissions. Other energy efficient and cost saving practices are turning off or unplugging scarcely used electronics, washing clothes at lower temperatures, and walking or using public transport.
One last tip! Refrain from lowering your A/C in the summer as one degree Celsius in room temperature consumes about 10 percent more energy.
Earth Day 2026
Theme:
“Our power, our planet”
Each year Earth Day campaigners call
for events with an annual altering theme. The U.S. 2026 Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” One billion Earth Day supporters in 192 countries are invited to unite behind renewable energy. The goal is to triple global generation of clean electricity by 2030. Everyone is urged to explore smart energy choices for their families and to advocate for an expedited deployment of renewable resources.
How does the KMC officially celebrate Earth Day 2026?
The 86th Airlift Wing hosts tree planting

The intent of the symposium was to address the urgent need for adapting allied military health services to meet the realities of high-intensity or large-scale combat operations. PARIS – More than 200 senior NATO medical leaders from across Europe gathered in Paris on Tuesday, Mar. 24, for a symposium hosted by the French Armed Forces Medical Service. The intent of the symposium was to address the urgent need for adapting allied military health services to meet the realities of high-intensity or large-scale combat operations.
The medical symposium, attended by military medical leaders from France, Germany, Spain, and the United States provided a critical platform for senior military medical leaders to share knowledge, discuss innovative medical strategies, and enhance interoperability among allied forces. The central theme of the symposium was the adaptation of military health services in the face of a major military engagement.
Individuals responsible for planning the symposium stated that for decades, the prevailing assumption was that a large-scale, high-intensity conflict in Europe was unlikely. However, recent geopolitical events have invalidated this assumption, compelling allied nations to reassess and reinforce their medical readiness.
Among the guest speakers at
the symposium was U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. During his remarks to the assembly, Giraud emphasized the gravity of the current security landscape in Europe.
“We gather here today to speak about the important topic of warfighting,” Giraud said. “For three decades, European nations assumed that a high-intensity conflict on the European continent was improbable. Well, this assumption is not valid.”
Among the topics discussed at the symposium were practical measures to ensure that military medical services can effectively support a large-scale combat operation, from point of injury care to strategic medical evacuation.
“The collaboration taking place this week between the participating nations aims to build a more resilient and integrated military medical system, capable of meeting the challenges of highintensity conflict,” added Giraud.
“Integration of NATO nations health service plans is essential to overcoming contested logistics, clearing the battlefield and optimizing return to duty.”
Military medical experts indicate that when LSCO happens,

medical systems become a strategic determinant of endurance, legitimacy, and enable success on the battlefield. The insights discussed during the symposium were intended to inform and shape the future of military medical readiness across the continent.
“Medical readiness is not only about the conduct of war, but also about deterring war,” said Giraud. “Deterrence fails when endurance fails. Medical readiness is endurance.”
According to senior military medical leaders, in a high-intensity conflict involving peer adversaries, casualty volumes within days would be of scope and scale not seen since the World Wars of the last century.
“Medical success in largescale combat operations will be a coalition success,” added Giraud. “Stronger together is not just a slogan. To be truly stronger, we must act in three decisive ways; maintain medical readiness for crisis response, drive medical transformation and accelerate NATO medical integration.”
At the conclusion of the symposium, the consensus among at tendees was un animous; medical resilience underwrites deterrence, in te grated multinational care sustains combat power, and en durance enables global deterrence.

they had lived in Europe for over two years and they were tired of castles. What? How, I wondered, could you ever see too many castles?
Fast forward three years and I get it. However, a visit from my daughter prompted a day trip to a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. Burg Eltz is owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century – 33 generations ago.
Even in a country where it is almost impossible not to stumble over castle ruins, this castle really stands out. After having visited castles all around Europe, I have to say that Burg Eltz is one of the best I have ever seen and is my favorite castle in Germany.
That WOW Factor
Burg Eltz sits in a lush green valley, hidden away from main road traffic. It is the first castle that has ever actually taken my breath away as we rounded a corner in the shuttle and got a look at the view. Unlike the vast majority of castles along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, this was one of the few that has never been destroyed or badly damaged.
Burg Eltz’s setting is simply stunning, as it sits perched on a rock and surrounded by thick, wooded hills and the babbling Elzbach Creek on three sides. This setting was chosen strategically, since the location was perfect for exacting tolls on passing traders, which provided much of the early wealth for Burg Eltz’s residents.
You can reach the castle on foot by a scenic fifteen-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot or by taking a much longer hike from a nearby town. On the other hand, you can cheat like we did and take the shuttle.
Either way, you will have a “wow” moment when you round the corner and see Burg Eltz lying before you.
Unlike many castles that have been handed back and forth, or created only as an escape for royalty, Burg Eltz has been a real, live, lived-in castle since the first day of its medieval construction. Yes, the same family has lived here for more than thirty generations, and during this time, Burg Eltz has never been destroyed. It was attacked once, but never conquered.
In the world of medieval European castles, this is rare. It has also allowed Burg Eltz to remain much as it was in its earliest days, and to serve as a home to a vast collection of authentic family heirlooms and artifacts. I was able to take a few photos before our tour guide came in and gently reminded us that photos are not permitted.
Once inside the castle walls, the main courtyard is a hodgepodge of design styles,

reflecting the fact that three different branches of the family once resided in the structure together.
You can find all current information at https://burg-eltz.de/en/oppening-timestickets
All tours are guided and depart every 10 to 15 minutes in German. Guided tours in other languages, including French, Dutch, and English, are also available but depart less frequently. Even more gems are present inside the residential quarters, as all tours include a visit to the rustic medieval kitchen and stately Knights Hall, where the families gathered for large feasts and conversation.
Burg Eltz is located in the Mosel Valley and is an easy drive, although the GPS address took us a bit off course. As you get closer to the castle, you will see signs for parking.
Address: Burg-Eltz-Straße 1 56294 Münstermaifeld, Germany
The castle is just under 2 hours north of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 30 minutes northwest of Wiesbaden and 3 hours northwest of Stuttgart.

For most Americans overseas in the military or federal system, starting the journey to retirement planning is actually pretty straightforward. You already have access to one of the best tools available, the Thrift Savings Plan.
The issue with getting started is not always access, it is how it is being used.
A lot of people assume that as long as they are contributing something, they are on track. In reality, small decisions inside the TSP program seem to have a much larger impact over time than we would expect.
The first thing to get right is contributions. If you are under the Blended Retirement System or the Federal Employees Retirement System, you are able to receive matching benefits. One percent is automatic, and up to four percent is matched. That means you could receive five percent total from the government if you are contributing enough. Not contributing at least five percent is one of the easiest ways to fall behind, and it is also one of the easiest problems to fix. I doubt many of us would turn down a 5 percent pay raise.
The next issue that many miss is where the money is actually going. A common situation for those who served before 2018 is finding that your investment was placed into the G Fund by default and letting it stay there longer than intended. While newer members now default into Lifecycle funds, some midcareer personnel are still quietly sitting in the G Fund. The G Fund has its place, being quite secure, but it is not built for long-term

growth. Over time, it is unlikely to keep up with stock-based funds. For someone early or mid-career, this can quietly limit growth and progress.
On the other hand, some people try to actively move money between funds based on what they think the market will do next. That usually leads to missed gains rather than better timing. If you are not very involved and are not trading in other areas with experience, you may often do better with something simple and consistent.
Inside TSP, that usually means one of two approaches. The first is using a lifecycle fund. These automatically adjust risk over time, starting more aggressive and becoming more conservative as retirement approaches. For someone who does not want to manage allocations, this is a solid option.
The second approach is a basic mix of core funds. The C Fund tracks large U.S. companies, the S Fund covers smaller companies, and the I Fund provides international exposure. A combination of these, adjusted for your openness to risk, covers most of what people are trying to achieve in a balanced, growth-oriented account. It is important to understand that it does not need to be complicated to be effective.
Another area where people fall behind is thinking that TSP at 5 percent is enough on its own without ever revisiting contributions. Early in a career, the base contribution might feel like a stretch. Later on, it often becomes normal and never changes. As your income increases, contributions should usually increase as well.
Taking a portion of your increased wages and investing them will still allow improvements in quality of life, but it will help your retirement tremendously. Otherwise, your savings rate as a percentage of income will quietly shrink over time.
For those who reach the point where they are contributing more aggressively, an Individual Retirement Account can be added alongside TSP. This is not a replacement, just additional diversification. IRAs can offer a much wider variety of investment choices beyond the TSP's core funds, along with different tax treatments and more flexibility. However, for most people, they come in once the TSP is being utilized properly.
We as humans have a tendency to delay these decisions. Assignments feel temporary, financial systems feel slightly different, and
it is easy to assume things will be addressed later. In practice, those delays tend to add up more than expected. We all know how fast a 3–5 year assignment goes by. Time is by far the biggest factor when investing for retirement. A few years of consistent contributions early on can outweigh trying to catch up later.
The Thrift Savings Plan is already set up to do what most people need. Low costs, simple options, and automatic contributions take care of a lot of the burden. What tends to make the difference is not finding a better plan, it is using the one you already have a bit more intentionally.
For most, that comes down to a few things, contributing enough to get the full match, choosing an allocation that supports long-term growth, and increasing contributions over time instead of leaving them static.
This is a very simple way to get started with your retirement program. The steps beyond this are limitless as you gain experience. The key is getting started and sticking to it.
