At Chiévres Air Base, Belgium, the 424th Air Base Squadron’s primary responsibility is to secure the airfield and aircraft on the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe airfield, and many sections within that squadron make that mission happen. The 424th ABS, which is a geographically separated unit of the 86th Airlift Wing, located at Ramstein Air Base, includes 17 different sections that contribute to the mission, and a large part of securing that mission is the 424th ABS security forces section. While they have the same standard responsibilities as a security forces squadron, such as guarding the gate and airfield security, security forces section Airmen regularly engage with other sections within the squadron. “To be in a squadron with different [Air Force Specialty Codes] See SUCCESS, Page 3

COMMENTARY: 569 United States Forces Police Squadron is ATLAS STRONG by Maj. Brian Gilliam 569th United States Forces Police Squadron commander The 569th United States Forces Police Squadron is ‘ATLAS strong,’ as we align with the 86th Mission Support Group’s motto. Our Defenders, who are known as Guardian Eagles, work in a joint, multi-agency, and international environment to serve and protect the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Being ‘ATLAS strong’ at the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron means, we take care of our Guardian Eagles and their families, we grow leaders, we strive to be a positive example for others, and we steadfastly prepare to serve and protect the KMC today, and for the future fight. To accomplish our mission of serving and protecting the KMC, we must be the most proficient Security

Forces unit in the Air Force. To that end, we have two priorities: People and training. Commanding the Guardian Eagles of the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron is a truly humbling experience. While I have commanded two previous squadrons, the opportunity to command the last police squadron in the entire Air Force is an honor unlike any other. Since I was a Second Lieutenant, and my first flight chief told me stories about the 569th, its has been a goal of mine to be a part of this storied organization. The 569th is highlighted by the black “SP” brassard, a nearly 80-year tradition dating back to the beginnings of the Air Force and the Air Police. Commanding this squadron is truly a dream come true. Since arriving in July 2022, I have been impressed by the incredible caliber of Airmen, Soldiers, and our German partners that con-

tribute to the mission of serving and protecting the Kaiserslautern Military Community. I could not ask for a better team. As an organization, the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron is unique, not only is it the only police squadron in the Air Force, but its 24/7 operations with Army Military Police and Department of Emergency Service and deep partnership with our German hosts makes for an incredible team of teams. I have charged my team with never being late in taking care of a Guardian Eagle or their families. Additionally, using Guardian Eagles’ time efficiently is, and will remain, a command priority. Training the Air Force preeminent Law Enforcement organization is no easy task. With over twenty-five percent of the entire Air Force’s caseload, this squadron truly performs incredibly at every opportunity. Balancing the need to

maintain daily Law Enforcement proficiency with the challenge to organize, train, and equip for a future fight is true challenge. Our Guardian Eagles will be brilliant at the core skills that create our lethality: shoot, move, communicate, and preserve life. This foundation will reinforce excellence not only as we prepare for the future fight, but within our day-to-day service and protection of the community. As I continue my time as the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron, I will never forget why we are here: to serve and protect the Kaiserslautern Military Community. That service begins and ends with the Airmen, Soldiers, and German partners who make up our incredible team. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the Guardian Eagles as your commander, I am truly honored and humbled by everything you do.

Kaiserslautern American SUCCESS from page 1 is pretty unique,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Timon Richardson, a Security Response Team Leader at the 424th ABS. “You get the chance to learn about the other jobs in the Air Force and how they help support the mission.” Security forces Airmen often visit other shops within the squadron and see how they operate, said Richardson. “We train with the fire department, and assist vehicle maintenance and vehicle management with conducting combat offload training and other operations. “I would normally only hang around security forces people at a larger base,” said Richardson. “Here I go to different shops on slow days and learn about their mission and how they operate.” Airmen in the 424th ABS security forces section also work alongside host nation partners, and in a joint environment with U.S. Army Military Police, said Richardson. “This

Page 3 allows us to function more efficiently and ensure the safety of the personnel and property we are tasked to support.” Working so closely together is both a learning experience, and an opportunity to form relationships that would have been unlikely in other situations, said Staff Sgt. Richard Castro Camacho, 424th ABS Security Forces Noncommissioned Officer in Charge. “Many of our Airmen are performing duties that are normally held by a noncommissioned officer, but these guys do a great job taking on these responsibilities and ensuring we meet the highest standard possible,” said Castro Camacho. The section, which is manned with seven personnel, regularly augments the host nation and U.S. Army security requirements to ensure the airfield can support 24/7 operations for this essential NATO mission. “We all have the opportunity to have a closer relationship from the top to the bottom,” said Richardson. “And we grow as a team.”

Post office changes — Electronic custom forms Starting Monday, Nov. 14, customers will now be required to provide electronic customs forms in order to ship out packages at the Northside Post Office and Kapaun Post Office. This is a huge step forward to decrease customer wait time in the facility prior to the start of the holiday season. Customers can create the electronic customs forms by visiting www.usps.com. Customers can choose to either (1) print the electronic customs form from their home or (2) by creating and printing the electronic customs form at the stations located in each Post Office’s lobby. According to the German Polizei, it is also prime time for burglars and thieves. According to the Polizei, about 50 percent of burglaries occur between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Most burglars will readily give up if they can’t get into the house within three to five minutes and often work with simple tools such as screw drivers or wrenches. The German Polizei has started a campaign against burglary and theft and would like to share a few important tips to ensure that you and your family remain safe, and take appropriate measures to safeguard your home and belongings. Do you know your neighbors? Police experience has shown that obser-

vant neighbors can help in avoiding criminal offenses such as burglaries. If you don’t know your neighbors, politely greet them with a friendly “Guten Tag” on the street or invite them to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate across the fence to get to know them a bit. Just recently in Kaiserslautern, an attentive neighbor observed two suspicious characters at the house across the street, called the Polizei and the culprits were caught on scene. In addition, let your neighbors know that you are on a TDY or on vacation and ask them to keep an eye on the house during your absence. Opportunity makes thieves Do not even give burglars a chance. Do not deposit any keys in outdoor places, such as under the door mat, under flowerpots or in wall crevices. If possible, let down your rolladen during longer periods of absence, in particular at the back of the house where intruders may remain undiscovered and out of sight.

Opportunity makes thieves Burglars always come at night? Incorrect thinking – burglars often come during the day. They will scout around the neighborhood and wait for residents to go to school, work or out to shopping. Based on early darkness this time of the year, they are very active during dusk because they are more difficult to spot and not that many people are out on the streets. Are your windows and your doors safely secured? Have you thought about your basement windows? Tilted windows are basically open windows and hardly an obstacle for an intruder. Make sure to always properly close windows during your absence. Many modern windows or balcony doors are equipped with separate locks. In addition, turn your house door key two or three times to make sure that the locks are properly anchored in the frame. It is easy to pry open a door if it only falls in place unlocked.

What to do if you spot a burglar in the act? Retreat to a safe place, immediately dial 1-1-0 and wait for police instructions. Do not attempt to approach or stop the intruder, as this may lead to aggression, and you could endanger yourself. Try to remember as many details as possible, such as how many persons, their appearance (height, hair color, figure and complexion), which language are they speaking, whether they have a car or vehicle and possibly the plate number. You come home and discover that someone has broken in? • Immediately call police, do not touch anything, and file a police report for possible insurance matters. • Be vigilant, turn your home into your personal “Fort Knox” and protect your neighbors as well. • In emergencies dial 1-1-0 or DSN 489-6060 (civilian 0631-536-6060)

Get protected with new COVID-19 booster, flu vaccine by TRICARE Communications There are two vaccines you should consider getting this fall. It’s the beginning of flu season in the U.S., so now is a good time to get your annual flu vaccine. But did you know that you can also get the latest COVID-19 booster at the same time? “The bivalent COVID-19 booster targets the latest Omicron variants of the virus,” said Dr. David Hrncir, regional medical director of Central Region Vaccine Safety Hub for Defense Health Agency Immunization Healthcare Division. “We need to work together during fall and winter to curb the spread of both COVID and flu. The vaccines are critical to protect you and those around you.” Receiving the bivalent booster can help restore protection that’s waned since your previous vaccination. It can also provide broader protection against newer variants. The booster covers the most recent Omicron subvariants currently circulating, BA.4 and BA.5. These subvariants are more contagious. They’re also more likely to evade antibodies made against earlier subvariants, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. COVID-19 booster eligibility The CDC recommends that people ages 5 and older receive one updated bivalent COVID booster if it has been at least two months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose. To help you determine when you or your child can get one or more COVID-19 boosters, use the online booster tool found on the CDC website. Keep in mind, you shouldn’t get your booster if you’re currently infected, according to the CDC. You may delay getting the new dose by three months if you’ve recently had COVID-19. Flu vaccine eligibility Why should you get the flu vaccine? The vaccine significantly reduces your chance of contracting the virus. If you do catch the flu, it can make the illness less severe.

Getting vaccinated also helps protect the people around you, including those who are at greater risk of developing serious flu complications. This includes young children, the elderly, and people with certain chronic health conditions. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. The CDC says it’s safe to receive both the flu vaccine and COVID-19 booster together, if you’re eligible. This means with one visit, you can protect yourself against both viruses and save yourself an extra trip to the pharmacy or your doctor’s office. Where to get the COVID-19 booster and flu vaccine You can get your new COVID booster and flu vaccine at: • Military hospitals and clinics • TRICARE-authorized providers (You can search the provider directory to find a vaccine provider.) • TRICARE retail network pharmacies

Check the TRICARE website for more information on locations that offer the COVID-19 vaccines and boosters and flu vaccine. Remember that you’ll want to make sure the location you choose has both vaccines before you plan a visit. And depending on the location, you may need to schedule an appointment before going. How TRICARE covers the vaccines You can get the COVID-19 vaccine booster at no cost. But if you aren’t on active duty, you may have a cost for an office visit when seeing a civilian provider. You may also have costs if you need follow-on care. The flu vaccine isn’t free everywhere. You can get your flu vaccine for free at your local military hospital or clinic. If you get your flu vaccine at a retail network pharmacy, the pharmacist must administer the vaccine for TRICARE to cover it. If you get your flu vaccine at a non-network pharmacy, you may have out-of-pocket expenses and need to file a claim for reimburse-

On a sunny October Saturday in downtown Kaiserslautern, strategically placed in a popular shopping area, garrison employees took a grass roots approach to letting German citizens know how to apply for jobs with the U.S. government. Dr. George Brown, head of the garrison’s Directorate of Public Works’ operation branch, said getting back to face-to-face interactions and hitting the streets in the form of job fairs and information booths are working. “A few years ago, DPW had been losing [employees] more than gaining,” he said. “Since April, we’re gaining two or three for everyone one we lose.” DPW, the directorate that by far employs the most local nationals within the garrison, said they were losing local national employees at an alarming rate as a large part of the workforce was approaching retirement. Brown then started looking into the process of the local national job hunt and found one of the main hurdles was that peo-

ple simply didn’t know, outside of family or friends, where to go to find and apply for job openings. “If you ask anybody who has been working for us for at least three years how they found out about the job, every single one of them will tell you they knew someone,” said Brown. One of those employees, Lea Hey, said she found her current customer service job with the Baumholder housing office through a friend. She has been working with the garrison for a year and said she came out to support the Oct. 22 information booth to simply talk about her job. “I do it really because I like my job. I like to tell people I work for the U.S. Army,” she said. Outside of where to apply, Brown said another challenge is letting people know of the benefits. He said a job posting typically displays the potential starting salary but doesn’t get into the benefits such as the possibility of having both American and German holidays off, access to on-base fitness and dining facilities and a manageable work-life balance.

Hey’s favorite benefit? “The German and America holidays,” she said. Since U.S. federal holidays are observed on weekdays, “we will have long weekends which means you can go on a trip or something.” Both Brown and Hey said people have approached them about the language requirement. Brown noted English proficiency varies job-by-job and recommends checking each job listing. Hey said she constantly gets question on how good one’s English needs to be. “My school English was enough to start. But when you start your job, you will learn it really fast,” she said. George noted that free English training is another potential benefit. He encourages anyone even remotely interested in the working for the U.S. government to get online to see what’s available. At the time of this writing, according to the job postings website there are nearly 475 job opening in Germany; more than 300 of those are located in the garrison’s footprint

Bush: NATO’s strength deters conflict Story and photo by North Atlantic Treaty Organization News NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush in the Adriatic Sea, Oct. 25. The Bush currently leads a carrier strike group under NATO command, which Mr. Stoltenberg called “a demonstration of U.S. capability and commitment to the Alliance.” He added: “this carrier sends a powerful message of Allied deterrence every day.” The USS George H.W. Bush is currently leading Neptune Strike 2022, a NATO deployment testing readiness to deter and defend across the Euro-Atlantic area. It includes over 80 aircraft, 14 ships, and around 6,000 personnel from 24 NATO Allies and partners, including Finland and Sweden. The Secretary General called this “a perfect example of the transatlantic bond — Europe and North America working together in NATO.” He said that the deployment “demonstrates our ability to rapidly reinforce our Allies, and project power across the Alliance.” Mr. Stoltenberg added that NATO’s “strength helps to prevent any miscalculation by sending a clear message: NATO will protect

10 Mountain Division soldiers help save victim of fuel truck explosion

One moment they were sipping coffee inside a diner in fall. Then an explosion outside shook the seats of two 10th Mountain Division (LI) Soldiers on the morning of Oct. 18. Staff Sgt. Joshua Hayes and Pfc. Jacob Lundemo, both with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th

Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, made a quick stop in the town of Fowler, New York, for gas and coffee when a fuel truck exploded on County Route 22. Hayes, a weapons squad leader, said the noise sounded like a mortar round exploding and their immediate reaction was to get everyone to safety. “Our first instinct was to evacuate the area of all the pedestrians

… and secure the area and make it as safe as possible for everyone,” he said. “Initially when the explosion happened, it was chaotic around the area and emotions were pretty high.” Then they saw a body lying under the truck. “We let the situation develop for a few seconds and then, collectively, made the decision to go and rescue the casualty from underneath the vehicle,” Hayes said. Workers were behind the truck attempting to extinguish the fire. The Soldiers directed other truck drivers to move their vehicles away from the incident site and then asked someone to help them move the victim.

“We administered first aid until EMS arrived, according to how we’ve been trained to handle medical situations in certain circumstances,” Hayes said. “We double-checked and triple-checked everything that we did to make sure we didn’t miss anything that could possibly help until medical professionals arrived.” Besides the initial medical instruction that they received in basic training, Hayes said they developed more advanced skills during Expert Infantryman Badge training. “Any free time we have, we like to really hone in on medical training for emergency situations,” he said. “And not just the medical

All the training in general that we’ve had, I think, allowed us to be able to react properly to a situation that was otherwise very chaotic and to be able to make smart decisions in a timely manner.” Lundemo was the first to speak with the victim, and he found him responsive and in good spirits. “I told him he would be all right and that we would get him out of there,” he said. Hayes said that people on the scene gave them clean blankets and towels to clean the victim’s wounds and keep him warm. As for their being in the right place at the right time, both Soldiers said they were just glad they could assist. “I believe we were there to help,” Hayes said. “That’s the only sense I can make of the whole situation. Don’t be frightened this Halloween: What you need to know about winter tires, driving by Nico Nagel U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Halloween is coming but what you should be more frightened by is having the wrong tires on your car during wintertime. According to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety Director Richard Cruikshank, having the wrong tires could result in a dangerous situation. “It could happen that you skid with your car due to the glaze,” said Cruikshank. “Following distance on slippery roads should be twice or more than when driving on dry roads — stopping distance is three to 12 times greater when road conditions are icy.” Cruikshank also gave some tips to prevent driving accidents and dangerous situations: • Drive at reduced speeds so you can stop more smoothly. • Lightly pump your brakes to warn of your intention to stop. • Give turn signals sooner than usual — this gives other drivers more time to react. • Maintain at least triple the normal distance from the vehicle ahead. “When driving up and down hill, you should select the proper gear before going up, ‘usually a lower gear,’ and when going down use the same gear,” said Cruikshank. “This will allow the engine to act as a brake, so you will not have to use the brake excessively.” Cruikshank also talked about what to do if you skid on icy roads. Do not panic or make any sudden changes in speed or direction — ease off accelerator and steer

in direction that the rear of the vehicle is skidding. Safety precautions aside, having the correct tires is a federal German law. According to the “AllgemeinerDeutscher-Automobil-Club” or in Germany known as ADAC, 2010 German law mandates the use of winter tires when conditions are icy. According to the ADAC, winter tires have two kinds of markings: a snowflake that indicates the tire is a snow tire, and the second mark-

ing is a M+S sign that means “mud and snow” [ Matsch und Schnee]. This law pertains to trucks and buses as well regardless of whether the driver is the owner or just renting the vehicle. According to the ADAC, it is important to note that all-season or all-weather tires that also have the M+S marking are acceptable for winter driving this year. Tires with the old M+S sign are allowed until September 30, 2024, but ADAC recommends getting new tires with the Alpine 3-peak-moun-

tain mark as soon as possible.

Prices of snow tires vary widely depending on the make and the model of the vehicle. It may be a good idea to look online, but always be mindful of the shipping date as it may get icy before tires arrive. If found violating this law it can get really costly. According to ADAC, fines range from 60 to 80 euros depending on if others are hindered because of the violation. Depending on the situation, points could be added to one’s license compounding an already stressful situation. If alpine driving is in your winter plans, be sure to have snow chains. According to ADAC, German traffic sign 268 states: from here on, you can only drive with snow chains. Anyone driving on a snowcovered road without them risks a warning fine of 20 euros. Also important to note, sign 268 also applies to vehicles with all-wheel drive. Snow chains are not a substitute for winter tires. So if you were planning to buy some pumpkins or Halloween candy, a bigger fine would be much scarier than all the costumes on Halloween!

hours diving off the dock or simply swimming in the water. Others choose instead to sit and drink in the view of the country’s largest lake. Finally, the more adventurous ones rent a boat and take a spin on the water, admiring the beauty of the mountainous, green scenery. Don’t be fooled and think Sirmione is solely a tourist temple. Alongside the bars, restaurants and lakeside activities are cultural attractions such as the ancient Roman ruins and a medieval castle, Rocca Saligera. Though the lakeside view is impressive, the view from the

castle tops it all. Visitors who get tired of Sirmione, although it is hard to do, will find plenty of other things to do nearby. Popular cities such as Verona or Milan are less than a day trip away. And for people without cars, the many other towns around the lake provide just as much, if not more, to do than Sirmione itself. Nevertheless, it is important to have a transportation plan in order to fully enjoy the vacation. Public transportation is relatively good, with options ranging from ferries to buses and taxis.

The nightlife can prove to be just as interesting as the daytime activities, as tourists and residents alike sit at the bars enjoying music and good company. Campari is a good drink choice for those interested in the full Italian experience. But regardless of the beverage, you are guaranteed to have a fun, relaxing night.
