86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron The 86 VRS has established a base shuttle to support deployed/TDY individuals in support of current operations here in the KMC. The shuttle currently services work centers, QoL & lodging facilities on Ramstein Air Base, but has routes planned for lodging at both Kapaun and Landstuhl to be activated as required. Our simple QR code will take you to our current shuttle routes/times so we can remain flexible to changing requirements and keep the latest shuttle schedule posted for all customers. This shuttle information is also posted on the AF Connect application, at all bus stops, and at all lodging locations.

West Gate Upgrades Expect delays at the West Gate from June 27 – July 1 as upgrades are made to the outbound lanes. Traffic flow will be rerouted through the gate during this time. Drivers are encouraged to use the new ROB-MC gate. Just like the former East Gate, the ROBMC gate is operational 24/7. Additionally, there is also a new joint (Army/Air Force) Visitor Control Center (VCC), located just prior to the gate and provides the same visitor services as the current West Gate VCC and the Pulaski Installation Access Office,, with operating hours of 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. KMC Housing Office The KMC Housing Office and the Furnishings Management Section (FMS) will be closed on June 20 in observance of the Holiday, as well as on June 24 for an official function. Update: Finance Walk-In Hours/ Base inprocessing Starting June 20, finance customer service walk-in hours will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday in building 2108. The finance lobby will be used for base in-processing from 1-5 p.m. with Housing, Tricare and Finance. In accordance with DOD Force Health Protection Guidance and the foreign
clearance guide, all passengers traveling to the United States via Military Aircraft, age 2 and older, must receive a negative viral test (PCR or Antigen) within three calendar days of departure OR recovery letter within 3 months of positive test result and complete a Threat Health Declaration. All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask on DOD transportation assets and within DOD transportation hubs. Retiree Activities Office Your 86 AW/RAO maintains email addresses for over 1400 retirees and or surviving spouses located throughout the KMC footprint. Before the pandemic the email address elements were quite accurate, but for some reason many email addresses now are being rejected/ undeliverable. ATTN: Those packing up, leaving the KMC Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them at +49-631-536-7727 three weeks before moving to begin the booking process. Satellite Pharmacy at Kaiserslautern Military Community Center The Ramstein Clinic Satellite Pharmacy is now open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturdays from 12 a.m.-4 p.m. Please note that the pharmacy will be closed every second Tuesday of the month and on federal holidays. The pharmacy provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to retrieve medications for those who have difficulty getting to the clinic during its operating hours. In September, DOD commemorated the 10-year anniversary of that repeal, she said. “We will continue to advance policies and programs to develop and nurture a leadership pipeline of diverse talent and create pathways for everyone at DOD to realize their potential. We know that organizational climates affect our workforces’ experiences. More to the point, it affects our warrior readiness. Therefore, we are directing initiatives to improve leaders’ skill development and foster more effective, inclusive team environments,” she said. and accessibility strategic plan to guide and direct activities to further those initiatives within the department, she said. That plan is in the final stages of approval and will identify DOD’s priorities and objectives for the coming year, she said. Progress will not be driven by policies and programs alone; it will also result from the individual actions each person takes every day, she said. “The diversity of the United States is unquestionably one of our greatest strengths. Many here today have fought hard battles to overcome bigotry and be treated with dignity and respect that is due to every human being,” she said. Pride Month is a time to celebrate our progress, and it’s also a time for the department, the nation and the world to acknowledge the challenges that remain and to reaffirm our commitment to equality for LGBTQ+ people, she said. 5 things you may not know about D-Day by Katie Lange Department of Defense News D-Day. The Invasion of Normandy. Operation Overlord. It goes by various names, but we’ve all heard about it through history class, grandparents, the news or shows like “Band of Brothers.” June 6, 1944, is the day when more than 160,000 Allied forces landed in Nazi-occupied France as part of the biggest air, land and sea invasion ever executed. It ended with heavy casualties — more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded in those first 24 hours — but D-Day is largely considered the successful beginning of the end of Hitler’s tyrannical regime. The bravery by the paratroopers and soldiers who stormed Normandy that day is well-known, but there are a lot of things you
day, largely in part because Army intelligence underestimated the German stronghold there. Rough surf caused huge problems for the amphibious tanks launched at sea; only two of 29 made it to shore, while many of the infantrymen who stormed off the boats were gunned down by Germans. Gen. Omar Bradley, who led the Omaha forces, nearly considered abandoning the operation. Somehow, though, both sectors of U.S. troops managed to advance their positions for overall success.

Why it’s called D-Day Do you actually know what D-Day stands for? Apparently it’s the most frequently asked question at the National World War II Museum, but the answer isn’t overly simple. Many experts have varying opinions, including that the D simply stood for “day,” a code used for any important military operation. Others have said it’s just alliteration, like “H-Hour,” when a military assault begins. While the true meaning remains up for debate, we’ll go with what U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower said about it through his executive assistant, Brig. Gen. Robert Schultz: “Be advised that any amphibious operation has a ‘departed date;’ therefore the shortened term ‘D-Day’ is used.” He said there were actually several other D-Days during the war — Normandy was just the biggest and most well-known. D-Day was initially set for 1 day earlier A lot of weather-related requirements were necessary to pull D-Day off. The days needed to be long for maximum air power usage; a near-full moon was needed to help guide ships and airborne troops; and the tides had to be strong enough to expose beach obstacles at low tide and float supply-filled landing vehicles far onto the beach during high tide. H-Hour was also crucial in that it relied on those tides to be rising at that time. There also had to be an hour of daylight just beforehand for bombardment accuracy.
Only nine days in May and June seemed to fit those requirements, so commanders eventually settled on June 5; however, thanks to forecasts that showed a short window of good weather that day, Gen. Eisenhower decided last-minute to switch D-Day to the early hours of June 6. We only stormed two of the five beaches Stories of how U.S. troops stormed the beaches of Normandy have been legendary for years, with the names Omaha Beach and Utah beach standing out in people’s minds. But the invasion stretched out over 50 miles of land, so we couldn’t do it alone. Three other beach invasions by Allied troops happened simultaneously: Great Britain and some smaller forces stormed Gold and Sword beaches, while the Canadians took Juno Beach. It was almost a failure While the ultimate goal of liberating France and ousting the Germans did happen, a lot went wrong on D-Day — especially for the Americans, who were the first to launch the invasion. Thousands of U.S. paratroopers died during their drop behind enemy lines at Utah Beach, having been shot out of the sky by enemy fire or weighed down and drowned in flooded marshlands. Many also missed their landing spots, as did the seaborne forces, which landed more than a mile from their intended destination, thanks to strong currents. The Omaha offensive turned out to be the bloodiest of the
Decoding ‘Enigma’ helped us win Decoding the great German code machine known as Enigma, then keeping that decoding device a secret, is one of the most brilliant strategies that came out of World War II. Long story short, since radio was the standard communication of the time, the Allies and the Axis powers both needed machines to turn military plans into secret codes. The Germans had Enigma, which was thought to be unbreakable — until it wasn’t. Early in the war, a team of Polish and British experts — led by Alan Turing, whose life and work are depicted in the Oscar-winning movie “The Imitation Game” — cracked that code through what became the foundation for the modern computer. Instead of telling the world about it, though, leaders thought the device would be more useful if kept secret. So for years, German plans were hindered by the decrypted messages, including on D-Day. Officials said the German codes intercepted before D-Day precisely pinpointed nearly all of the German fighting units in the Normandy area. On D-Day itself, it also helped Allied commanders get word of their troops’ progress quicker than through their own communication channels. Breaking Germany’s codes, and later those of the Japanese, proved to be a huge advantage for the Allies. While controversial for its secrecy, the decoding process has been widely credited with saving hundreds of thousands of lives and shortening the war by nearly two years. Oh, and by the way, the U.S. military developed its own superior code machine — SIGABA — before entering the war. No one was able to break that one. If you didn’t know any of those things before today, now you do! But either way, make sure to remember those who gave their lives that day to help ensure a better future for all of us.

Ex Ramstein legacy trains allied air defense forces in Baltic Sea region

Fighters and Surface Based Air and Missile Defence units from Allies and Partners have come together in Poland and the Baltic States to take part in Ramstein Legacy 22, June 6-10. Exercise Ramstein Legacy is Allied Air Command’s principal Integrated Air and Missile Defence exercise taking place across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The exercise includes 17 Allied and Partner nations and will integrate Allied SBAMD units under NATO Command and Control.

Story and graphic by Dan Hawkins Air Education and Training Command Public Affairs As part of Air Education and Training Command’s efforts to advance force development across the Air Force, AETC officials announced the Phase II launch of the service’s myTraining application to Airmen June 7. The myTraining system, “powered by myLearning,” is replacing the Total Force Training Record for Airmen and Guardians and provides the capability through 21st century learning tools to manage the training lifecycle for Total Force personnel. myTraining was designed by the AETC Learning Services Division to enhance productivity, efficiency, and mission effectiveness and upward reporting to other services to share data needed for joint mission accomplishment. “The old way of tracking learning is obsolete and needs to be modernized to accelerate the change we need to keep pace with demand and the fastpaced virtual learning world we live in today,” said Col. Randy Oakland, AETC Operations and Communications director. “The myTraining platform is another
example of how AETC is developing empowered Airmen with the attributes required to compete, deter aggression, and win in the high-end fight.” Additionally, the Air Force will see significant savings by eliminating redundant infrastructure, and Airmen and Guardians will spend less time on different applications, Oakland said. As the replacement to TFTR, the more modern myTraining is now integrated into myLearning’s applications with migrated data from the legacy Training Business Area and Air Force Training Record. “Tracking a lifetime of training and career progression, myTraining provides a onestop shop to record all learning, whether it occurs in a specialized training or education program, on the job or off-duty, or even training with another military service,” said Floyd McKinney, AETC Learning Services Operations division chief. “Over 800,000 Total Force Airmen & Guardians needed an on-the-job training management and tracking system; myTraining now delivers it.” According to McKinney, the fully interoperable and secure platform has a host of opera-
tional benefits for commanders and supervisors at all levels. “The operational benefits of myTraining include the ability to deliver, track and report on mission readiness training in one location, and maximize preparation during force generation cycles,” McKinney said. “The system gives options for MAJCOM-unique environments, and reduces overall lime spent by Airmen and Guardians on different platforms by using shared services.” The updated application enables supervisors to assign, monitor, document and record Training and Education activities for individuals to accomplish at specified times throughout their career, while also allowing specified roles, such as training managers, deployment monitors or commanders, to obtain and provide status reports at the individual and organizational levels, McKinney said. myTraining is expected to reach final operating capability in the fall of 2022. Pennsylvania’s State Partnership Program partner, Lithuania. “Up and down the battalion, from our main efforts to our supporting efforts, everyone did an outstanding job and I’m really pleased with where we are,” said Lt. Col. Michael Tornambe, commander of 1st Battalion, 109th Field Artillery Regiment. “The battalion performed exceptionally well. We were able to maintain nine out of nine of our crews certified. We were able to achieve timely and accurate fires for effect, on target.” The objective of Flaming Thunder was to enhance fires skills and assess units’ ability
to complete live fire tasks while creating the conditions for close cooperation of fire support units among NATO allies as part of Defender Europe 22. Defender Europe is an annual, U.S. Army-led joint exercise to build U.S., NATO and partner militaries’ readiness and interoperability. The 1-109th had eight Soldiers acting as liaison officers in the multinational Joint Air Ground Integration Cell, essentially replicating a division headquarters. They worked closely with the Lithuanian Land Forces and the German Armed Forces, Tornambe said.
Soldiers with the 1-109th performed 36 fire missions, sending approximately 400 rounds downrange. Defender Europe 22 included more than 3,437 U.S. and 5,193 multinational service members from 11 allied and partner nations. They conducted operations across nine countries. The 1-109th’s mission was to move to Europe, draw Army prepositioned stock and execute fires in support of multinational partners before returning home. “We’ve completed all of our objectives,” said Tornambe. “As a battalion, I’m really excited about where we are.”

If your child is born in Germany, then there are a number of steps to keep in mind to ensure proper documentation and for the application of a passport. A history of the combat helmet, quest to prevent injuries by Sean Webb Military Health System Communications As a critical piece of a warfighter’s protective gear, the combat helmet has vastly improved over the years as new technology and better designs have reduced the risk of fatal blows and traumatic brain injuries. The earliest combat helmets were made from bronze and used to protect soldiers from swords and arrows. They were heavy, crudely designed and did not fit well. During World War I and World War II, standard helmets were made from thin steel. They provided protection mainly against shrapnel rather than shock waves. They were lighter and provided better protection than helmets from previous eras. But at that time, soldiers were often reluctant to use their chin strap because they believed that “it was better for [the helmet] to be knocked off rather than injure the soldier’s neck,” said Alan Hawk, a collections manager for the National Museum of Health and Medicine, a branch of the Research Support Division in the Research & Engineering Directorate of the Defense Health Agency. Technology and safety protocols have evolved in recent years, resulting in helmets that provide more protection from both projectiles and shock waves. Modern helmets Modern helmets

Operations Command helped develop a new helmet designed to integrate modern communications devices. The Army adopted a version of that helmet in 2002 and named it the Advanced Combat Helmet. Modern helmets are also customized for specific jobs beyond the traditional infantry. Aircrew helmets protect from impact and noise. Helicopter aircrew have helmets that help protect against ricochets from the ground. Both helmets typically have built-in communications headsets and visors as well. Modern helmet designers optimize protection using test standards and methods measuring the probability of neck injuries,
concussions, and other injuries for specific conditions like ejection, said Benjamin Steinhauer, an engineer for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s 711th Human Performance Wing. The future of helmets New helmets focus on suspension technology, which uses shock absorbing webbing, and lightweight and crack resistant materials. While experts agree there will never be a perfect helmet, the military continues to make significant gains in protecting service members from TBI and other injuries. “We do find ways to make helmets lighter without sacrificing the mission,” Steinhauer said.

lighter as steel was replaced with composite materials like Kevlar. They now have padding and fitted chinstraps, allowing the helmet to stay attached during a blast. Inside, they include an energyabsorbing liner. Modern helmets are designed and tested to meet consistent standards to protect sol-
diers from concussions and other injuries. Visibility is also now a key factor to helmet design. “The best helmet in the world is not effective if a soldier walks into an ambush due to hampered vision,” Hawk said. In recent years, U.S. Special

515 TC supports Long Range Maneuver
Over the past five weeks, TF 515 has been supporting the Long Range Maneuver of 1-66AR across Poland and Lithuania. During this exercise TF 515 provided Heavy Equipment Transportation and recovery support to all tracked vehicles enabling two wet gap crossings. The field feeding team provided over 12,000 meals across two sites. Lastly, three Convoy Support Center teams supported all wheeled vehicles convoys, providing over 35,000 gallons of bulk and retail fuel. This continuous support from the 515th Transportation Company, 18th Combat Supply Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, allows 1-66AR the freedom of maneuver they require while in theater. It gives the transient Unit access to food, maintenance, and convoy support. Avoid release of pharmaceuticals into environment – protect waters Residues of medicinal products, even dangerous substances, have been increasingly detected in surface waters. This is an alarming fact and we want to take the opportunity to provide information on the subject. by German American Community Office How does pharmaceutical residue get into our waters? Carelessness and incorrect disposal of drugs down the drain or toilet increase the concentration of this chemical cocktail in our waste water. Medicines are not fully absorbed by the body. In part they are chemically unchanged when excreted. Ointments are rinsed off the skin when washing. In this way, via municipal sewage large amounts of pharmaceutical degradation products are emitted into soil and water with human and animal excretions. As sewage plants are not yet able to absorb, convert or bind these substances diffused in the waste water, the
amount of pharmaceutical residues in streams, rivers and lakes is increasing. This makes it all the more important that we avoid or at least reduce the release of medicinal products in the environment as much as possible. In Kaiserslautern county, non-recyclable waste is incinerated at very high temperatures. Therefore, you are allowed to dispose of medicines in your container for non-recyclable waste (black can). How to safely dispose of medicines • Never flush unused medicine down the drain or toilet! • Please wrap it into a newspa-
per or paper bag, put it into a waste bag, tie up the bag and throw it into the black can. The reason for this procedure is that the can might topple before it is emptied or that children look into it and mistake pills for sweets. • If the package insert contains a specific note (e.g. for cytostatic agents in cancer drugs), do not dispose of these drugs in the black can but take them to the hazardous waste truck (Umweltmobil) or the ZAK recycling center. By doing so, you can prevent unauthorized access by third persons. • Paper boxes and inserts go in the paper can. It is not required to remove pills from their direct packaging (the so-
called blister pack). You can discard the entire blister pack in the can for non-recyclable waste. • When disposing of objects with points or sharp edges (glass ampoules, syringes, etc.) you should use a non-penetrable box with a screw cap and put the box in the black can. • If you are unsure whether a certain medicine can be considered non-recyclable waste, you always have the option to take it to the ZAK recy-
cling center or the hazardous waste truck. While pharmacies are not obliged to take back unused or expired drugs, some offer this customer service on a voluntary basis. Avoid drug residues It is vital to act responsibly when handling medicinal products. Please check your supplies for medicines that are still usable before buying new products. In this way, you can avoid medical waste before it occurs.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Learning how to ‘stop the bleed’ Story and photo by Robert Whetstone Brooke Army Medical Center Public Affairs According to Bleedingcontrol.org, “uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma.” In San Antonio, there is an ongoing effort to train as many people as possible on how to control bleeding to increase the chances for victim survival. Brandy Martinez, Brooke Army Medical Center injury prevention coordinator, together with a team from University Health, taught a series of Stop the Bleed courses to the general public at the Texas Department of Transportation district offices, May 19. May is National Stop the Bleed Month, and the 19th happened to be Stop the Bleed Day. The courses are designed to help people learn how to prevent deaths from traumatic bleeding. “I love to help people to feel empowered and confident that they could step in and save a life,” said Martinez. According to the FBI, active shooter incidents in the U.S. have experienced a 52 percent increase from 2020-2021. With NPR reporting 198 mass shootings already in 2022, chances of being in one of these deadly incidents is becoming regrettably common. On May 14, a gunman killed 10
people in Buffalo, New York, while two were killed and seven others wounded near a McDonald's in Chicago. Martinez explained that anyone could find themselves in a situation where they are the first responder. “Bleeding emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere,” she added. NOTE: At the time of this writing, an active shooting was in progress locally at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about 85 miles west of San Antonio.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 42,915 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2021, a 10.5 percent increase from 2020, also a 16-year high. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg described this as a crisis on America's roadways. It is a crisis motorists can be prepared for to render first aid if properly trained to stop bleeding. Knowing how to control bleeding from a serious injury is important knowledge for everyone to have. BAMC and University Health have been teaching courses together since late 2017, along with other members in the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council region. STRAC develops, implements and maintains the regional trauma and emergency healthcare system for the 22 counties.

Stop the bleed training at the TxDOT district office focused on the “ABCs” of bleeding: • A – Alert (call 9-1-1) • B – Bleeding (find the injury) • C – Compress (apply pressure to stop the bleeding) Students participated in handson training, learning how to cover wounds with clean cloth or gauze and applying direct pressure with both hands, and how to apply a tourniquet. Additionally, they learned how to pack (stuff) a deep wound. At the conclusion of training, each student received
a Stop the Bleed kit that contained a tourniquet, gauze, surgical gloves, marker, and a certificate of completion of the training from STRAC. “I appreciate that BAMC gives me the opportunity to go out and teach in our community,” said Martinez. In addition to training community members, she provides required training for staff at BAMC. University Health and BAMC are the only two Level I Trauma Centers supporting STRAC. One of the elements of Level I Trauma Centers is to provide public education to surrounding communities.
“We do education and outreach as a requirement for our ACS (American College of Surgeons) Level I Trauma verification,” she said. “We do train at BAMC on request for departments and individuals. We also hold regular training classes. Our next one is scheduled for June 15 at 2 p.m. in the BAMC orthopedic conference room.” Martinez is motivated and passionate about the Stop the Bleed course and training as many individuals she can. She was very direct when asked why the training was so important. “If we can prevent one death, then all of the work is worth it,” she added.

romantic getaway, a family break or a lively party weekend with your friends. Port of Hamburg – Gateway to the World The Port of Hamburg is situated in the Elbe River basin, only about 100km from the open sea. Thousands of ships from all over the world call at Europe’s second largest port. From the cruise ship terminal to the historic Speicherstadt and the jetties to the modern container port – it’s a fascinating, thriving area of industry around which the entire city of Hamburg has been built. It’s possible to take tours of the port by bus, but by far the best way to view it is from the water — on a boat. There are numerous tour companies that offer harbour tours through the port, passing right by huge container ships, shipyards and container terminals. The port also hosts numerous museum ships offering tourists a unique way to learn more about the city’s shipping history. Converted from former passenger liners or barges, each tells a unique story about the history of the city as a shipping and trading post. In the Museumshafen Oevelgönne, you can visit around 20 vintage ships, including the German and Dutch flat-bottomed vessels, steam tugs and barges. There is also a steam crane, a high-seas cutter, as well as a harbour ferry that has been converted into a café. The star of the harbour is the former lightship Elbe 3. The ships have not only been painstakingly restored but also still sail on occasion as well. The cargo ship Cap San Diego was built in 1961 and it has been permanently anchored as a museum ship at the Überseebrücke in the Hanseatic city since 1986. The elegant silhouette of this ship, which is still seaworthy, has now become a part of Hamburg’s harbour promenade as much as the Speicherstadt and the HafenCity. Fish Market Every Sunday from 5-9:30 a.m. the legendary Hamburg Fish Market takes place (7 a.m. from mid-November to mid-March). It’s essentially a giant flea market with lots of stalls selling fresh fish, fried fish and pickled fish, too — all ready to eat or to take home and cook yourself. Either get up early, or hit the Reeper Bahn the night before and stay up late – Fish Brötchen (fish rolls) is officially the breakfast of party animals in Hamburg! The Alster Lake The 160-hectare Alster Lake in the heart of the city is a true paradise for sailors, rowers and paddlers, but surprisingly has a depth of no more than 2.50 meters. Its opulent grasslands on the edge of the bank offer plenty of opportunities to be close to the water, right in the middle of the city. Just kicking back on a blanket or a deckchair, jogging “all the way round the Alster,” taking a walk, playing frisbee and boules – the options are endless for you to enjoy this splendid green oasis on land. During some winters, you will even be able to make your way across the lake to the other bank without getting your feet wet. Naturally, the Alster is surrounded by cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or drink with a splendid view of the water. In the southern part of this area discover the Kennedy Bridge and the Lombard Bridge which separate the larger Outer Alster from the Inner Alster — the latter gives the city center a romantic and maritime air. This is where the Alster steamers take off from Jungfernstieg — a bustling and modern promenade. These steamers run regular services connecting various quays on the Outer Alster. So if you would rather not go out on the lake in a rented paddle boat, canoe or sailing dinghy: Take a tour on the Alster steamer and experience the landscape as well as the silhouette of the city from the water!

Hamburg Town Hall Hamburg Town Hall was built from 1886 to 1897 and with its impressive architecture dominates the centre of the city. The magnificent sandstone building houses the city’s senate and parliament, which
meets every second Tuesday. It’s an impressive building which is well worth a tour, though it must be arranged in advance. In stark contrast to the restrained Hanseatic style, the Town Hall has an elaborately decorated façade, flanked by a total of 20 statues of emperors. The Kaisersaal (imperial hall) – named because of the visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the opening of the North Sea-Baltic Canal – has a striking ceiling painting that symbolises merchant shipping under the German flag. In the Senate chamber, light passes through the large glass roof: This symbolises the ancient Germanic custom that the council should meet in open air. The Grand Ballroom is 46 meters long, 18 meters wide and 15 meters high. Five huge paintings depict the history of Hamburg from 800 to 1900 and 62 city coats of arms of the old Hanseatic League decorate the walls. The three chandeliers with 278 lights each weigh 1,500 kilograms! Miniatur Wunderland Visit the largest model railway system in the world at Miniatur Wunderland. Discover over 930 trains with nearly 14,450 railway wagons, 228,000 trees, 215,000 figures, 8,850 cars, 13,000 meters of track, and 3,660 buildings and bridges. This intricate and realistic miniature world is perfect for a day out with the kids. It is set over eight sections: Central Germany and The Harz, with its seemingly endless ICE high-speed route and over 130 trains, it includes beautiful landscapes and replicas of famous Hamburg districts and attractions such as St. Michaelis Church and Hagenbeck Zoo and the Port of Hamburg. Knuffingen is such a famous ‘mini’ city that it even has its own website (in German)! It is home to 10,000 ‘model’ inhabitants and its local police force frequently catches speeding drivers using their radar trap. The local fire station is kept pretty busy too. America draws ‘tiny’ crowds with its desert metropolis and paradise for gamblers, Las Vegas: More than 10 percent of all Wunderland lights — around 33,000 — are installed here. You can also enjoy mini versions of the Keys and Cape Canaveral as well as of course the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and Yosemite Park. Scandinavia was set up as the sixth sec-
tion in 2005. Particularly impressive is the real water basin in which there are currently 16 ships that travel from miniature port to port. Switzerland opened in November 2007. Here the mountains stand with the 6-metre high Matterhorn as the centerpiece where visitors can hike and enjoy the view once they have reached the summit. There are many astounding highlights, such as the tiny chocolate factory which produces real chocolate, or the open-air concert with 21,000 tiny visitors. Knuffingen Airport is the latest addition to the attraction, which took 6 years of construction! It offers visitors over 100 aeroplanes and other vehicles with fully automated movements. St. Michaelis Church Hamburg has many large churches, but none like St. Michaelis Church – there is only one “Michel.” This famous city landmark is over 350 years old and has been completely destroyed and rebuilt three times between 1641 and 1912. Experience the fabulous view of Hamburg, the port and the surrounding countryside from its platform 132 meters high – there is a lift if you don’t want to attempt the stairs, which is quite a workout. After dark, the panorama of the Hanseatic city from this viewpoint are breathtaking. Getting there The journey time to Hamburg is around 4.5 hours drive from Frankfurt, 5.5hours from KMC and 6 hours from Stuttgart. The train is quicker by an hour from Frankfurt and Stuttgart (it’s about the same as the drive time from Kaiserslautern) and there are some great all-inclusive offers that include train, hotel, meals and in some cases tickets to musicals from the Hamburg Tourist Office, which are well worth checking out.
