Adrian Sassoon and Katie Jones combine forces to present a display of some of the finest contemporary Japanese works of art. The exhibition, Revealing Beauty from Japan , will be held in Sassoon’s new space in Belgravia and can be seen by appointment.

The collaboration of these fervent enthusiasts for Japanese art and culture brings together an unprecedented exhibition of over eighty works of art from their respective stables of artists. Showcasing an exceptional selection of ceramics, glass, metalwork, lacquer, bamboo, indigo-dyed textiles and hardstone the display aims to reveal Japanese artistry, technical mastery and innovation.

Koji Hatakeyama creates patinated cast bronze works, which he does not intend to be functional. He is more interested in the artistic and spiritual worth of a piece, in his words ‘every article I make should live’.

Toru Kaneko is a metal artist known for his unusual patinations and exquisite craftsmanship. For two decades he was an influential Professor of metalwork at the Tohoku University of Art and Design before retiring in 2014.

“I have developed an intuitive relationship with silver that allows me to approach my work in a highly spontaneous way. Initiating work without development stages such as drawing and making small-scale models could be seen as risky, but for me it allows a certain freedom to create intuitively and remain true to the material. Intuition and feeling are core to my creative process, allowing me to maintain sensitivity with the material. The thematic influences in my work explore the subtleties within fluidity and sensuality, a very personal expression applied with an allencompassing hand.”

TAKAHIRO KONDO

Takahiro Kondo’s early ceramics followed a more traditional path, but he soon established his own independent artistic identity creating dynamic modern work, using simple slabbed forms and experimenting with other media such as metals and cast glass. His experiments with metals resulted in the creation of his unique “silver mist” glaze, for which he is now well known.

Takayuki Sakiyama is a ceramic artist who lives near the sea on the Izu Peninsula. Sakiyama’s sculptural series ‘ Chōtō - Listening to the Waves’ are stoneware vessels intended to remind you of the ebb and flow of the ocean and its currents.

Eiko Kishi is a ceramic artist who has perfected her own unique method of incorporating small fragments of crushed coloured clay into her work. Before the clay is dry she scores the surface with diagonal, vertical and criss cross lines with a needle.

RY ŪICHI KAKUREZAKI

Ryuichi Kakurezaki is known for his use of unconventional clays. Based in Bizen, he creates ceramic works with traditional Bizen techniques and methods. Since the 1990s he has been using what would have historically been considered ‘waste clay’ to achieve intriguing results.

YUKITO NISHINAKA

Yukito Nishinaka is a glass artist renowned for his distinctive yobitsugi technique, a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Japanese method used to repair objects. Traditionally lacquer has been used as glue to join damaged parts and then finished with gold leaf, thus enhancing the broken parts with a renewed charm. Yukito Nishinaka joins fragmented glass using molten glass to create harmony and beauty.
