CATALOGUE
Master silversmith, Hiroshi Suzuki, has made a significant impact on the history of silversmithing since his graduation in 1999 from the Royal College of Art in London. His dynamic silver vessels, hammer-raised in tune with his personal rhythms, are held in many esteemed public collections including the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich; Victoria and Albert Museum, London and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.
Since the beginning of his career the development of his four series, Aqua-Poesy, MiyabiFire, Ayawind, and Earth, have been at the forefront of his art capturing the beauty and fluidity of the four classical elements: water, fire, air and earth. The most recent series Zen, still intrinsically connected to nature, embodies too the quiet passing of time reflecting ‘movement without moving and stories without words.’
We have been fortunate to witness each evolution and present Hiroshi’s work for over twenty years. This exhibition of many works of art stretch across his career and provides an unique opportunity to view Hiroshi’s exceptional talent in creating his distinctive rhythms in silver.

Aqua-Poesy is the longest-running and most prolific of the initial four series and continues to evolve in Hiroshi’s current practice. The development of scale, textures and movement continue to expand the astonishing variety within this extensive series.
“Since relocating to Tokyo in 2013 (his fourth artistic period), this series has moved towards a more serene and narrative style, focusing on the beautiful phenomena of water. This evolution has influenced subsequent series for instance Terra Phenomenon, Unen, and Zen. Production continues steadily, making Aqua-Poesy my most refined and enduring body of work.
Unen is an extension of the Aqua-Poesy series exploring the same themes of water and impermanence but particularly focussing on the moment when water transforms into vapour or mist.”

“Miyabi-Fire stands as a counterpart to Aqua-Poesy, inspired by the traditional Japanese aesthetic of ‘miyabi’ meaning elegance and refinement. This series pursues expressive and poetic interpretations of fire. Among my four elements series, Miyabi-Fire remains the most actively evolving in its expressionist approach.”

AYAWIND (from 2004)
“Ayawind explores the theme of wind and air energy, constructed through tense, fast lines. The crossing lines represent the twisting, distortion and layered depth of energy flows. The title combines the Japanese word ‘aya’ (woven textile patterns) to metaphorically suggest the complex interweaving of energies that form wind.
The Seni series has evolved directly from Ayawind and is characterised by the tension and intersection of lines. The name Seni derives from the Japanese word sen’i, meaning ‘fiber’. However, the forms are softer, more decorative, and richly organic in both concept and expression.”

(from 2011)
“Inspired by the powerful forces shaping the earth’s surface, the Earth series features deep grooves and undulating movements that evoke natural landscapes.”
Both Terra Phenomeno n and Terra Creature are developments within the Earth series.
“Terra Phenomenon focuses on grand, dynamic natural phenomena such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, river erosion, shifting sand dunes, and tidal flows; traces that these forces leave on the earth’s surface over long periods. This series moves towards more narrative forms. I aim to explore expressions where opposing forces coexist, movement and stillness, destruction and harmony.
Terra Creature draws inspiration from living organisms on Earth and the underlying structures within. It incorporates patterns reminiscent of feathers, scales, tendrils, shells and bark as decorative elements, expressing the invisible rhythms of life.”

“The Zen series is my most recent body of work and marks a quiet new beginning in my creative journey. During the global uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, I turned sixty. That moment gave me time to reflect on my work and to think carefully where I want to go next.
Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1999, I have been creating continuously. Looking back, at the core of my practice I realise there has always been the influence of mujō – the Buddhist idea that everything is impermanent and constantly changing.
To express this feeling more clearly, I began working with the theme of kare-sansui, or dry landscape gardens. These traditional Japanese gardens of sand, stones, and empty space suggest natural elements like rivers and mountains, as well as the quiet passage of time. Their stillness and simplicity inspired the visual and conceptual direction of the Zen series, showing movement without moving and telling stories without words.”
