MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

NOLAN POLONEY

Whether you’ve been with us for a few days or a few years, I cannot fully express how proud and grateful I am to be your Executive Director here at All Seasons Rochester Hills. Not a day goes by when a resident does not mention and ask after a neighbor or a favorite staff member. It makes me truly believe we – all together – have created and continue to build a vibrant, care-filled community. I encourage you to continue to invite new residents to events, continue to build friendships, and continue to make this All Seasons (as I feel we already have) the very BEST Senior Community in Rochester Hills. While you are at it, have fun! Enjoy yourself! Our Life Enrichment Program has a lot to offer this quarter. I encourage you all to join us at our signature performances by the Mack Sisters, Schnittke Duo, and Terra Voce Ensemble. We will be hosting memorable events including a Mother’s Day Dance performance with some very special guests, a Flag Day concert by our very own resident choir, and an Equinox Artisan Showcase. As ever, we continue to showcase diverse lifelong learning (don’t miss the musical ‘History of Jazz’ presentation by the one-andonly Vincent York!), social events, cocktail and cuisine demonstrations, and discussions and trivia on local and global concerns. None of this would be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff, nor the talents, skills, and passions you, our residents, continue to share. Together, we are creating community every day. We look forward to the unique life enrichment offerings coming up this quarter; I encourage you to invite a new neighbor and try something new. As always, if there is anything I can do to facilitate your fullest enjoyment of All Seasons, I am at your service. Nolan Poloney 3

Mark has worked at All Seasons now for two years. In his spare time, Mark volunteers with St. Mary’s Church Choir. He’s also part of Avon Players Theater. Mark lives in his childhood home along with his mom, partner, and “Puppers” the dog.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

TERRA VOCE ENSEMBLE

MEET LILLIAN AVESIAN

VIOLIN, CLARINET, CELLO, AND PIANO JUNE 8 @ 1 PM Organized as a chamber music group in 2017, Terra Voce members draw upon their individual experiences with chamber music, choral, and orchestral organizations throughout Metropolitan Detroit. Lillian Dean, clarinet: Lillian Dean is principal clarinet with the Royal Oak Symphony and also plays with the Warren Concert Band, and holds Masters degrees in Urban and Regional Planning.. Doris Hall, piano: Doris Hall is the organist at the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Theory from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Organ and Church Music from Wayne State University. Kelly Roenicke, violin: Kelly Roenicke performs and teaches in the metropolitan Detroit area, and holds degrees in Violin Performance from Western Michigan University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Karen Wingert, cello: Karen Wingert graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in cello performance. Karen is a private music instructor in the Farmington Hills area and freelances with various chamber music ensembles.

She also goes by “Lill” too! Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, she lived there until her mid-20’s. Then she met a gentleman from Metro Detroit, got married, and moved to Michigan. She spent her early marriage years in Detroit and Pontiac but for over 50 years lived and raised her family in Flint Township. For a few years she worked as a secretary for Massachusetts Mutual Insurance, but then most of her vocation was raising children and taking care of her family. When asked ‘How do you make a stranger feel welcome to your community?’ Lillian replies, “That’s easy: I smile, say hello, and introduce myself! I ask the name of the new person and then share how much I've enjoyed the last 15 months of living here with all the other lovely residents and the staff and the care they all show in different areas of their jobs!” The greatest gift Lillian has ever received is being a part of her family's lives; watching her children grow up into such fine adults, celebrating her grandkids, and now - major bonus - her great-grandbabies!

ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS ART FOR EVERYONE WITH DOROTHY BABBAGE

As a former grade school teacher, Dorothy Babbage loves working with people and is amazed by their creativity and versatility. The best part of an art class is the laughing, talking, and sharing of life experiences, in addition to skills building. Every project presents an opportunity to reminisce about the past or to share a memory while discovering a new technique. This quarter, residents will create seasonal projects, such as spring decorations for your entryway, nature-inspired paintings, and modern paint-marker designs. Dorothy says, “Working at ASRH has been a wonderful addition to my life. I would love to have you join us. You don’t have to be an expert, just be willing to try something new.”

ARTIST TALK AND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

In celebration of National Photography Month in May, Angela Swan, the Director of Life Enrichment at All Seasons Ann Arbor, will give an Artist Talk about her diverse career as a photographer and community-builder, answer your questions about photography, then set up a fun and engaging portrait shoot. In 2020, she received her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She adapts artmaking to include all abilities, even those that don’t feel creative or who face physical or cognitive challenges.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ART PROGRAMS This quarter we’ll establish our relationship with Meals on Wheels, which seeks to reduce hunger and food insecurity for homebound adults who are frail, medically compromised, or have a short-or long-term disability that impacts their ability to shop and prepare complete, nutritious meals. The residents of All Seasons Rochester Hills will create cards of encouragement, inspired by the Japanese art Etegami, and cheerful decorations that were delivered with each meal!

He uses fabulous songs, written by some of the most gifted composers, to touch the hearts of those who hear. Although singing and playing a variety of songs from Ragtime, Pop, Broadway, Jazz, Blues, Inspirational, to Easy listening, one word can describe his musical performances – smooth.

Juneteenth - June 19 This week, we will commemorate this day with a documentary on Juneteenth’s history and a celebration of freedom. Juneteenth commemorates the day when emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, two months after the Civil War ended and more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that Union Gen. Gordon Granger and more than a thousand U.S. troops shared the news of freedom with the 250,000 enslaved people in the state. The anniversary of that day is celebrated as one of the bestregarded African American holidays in this country, ranking next only to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Equinox Artisan Showcase - June 22 Celebrate the official start of summer with a community-wide Artisan Showcase. Do you have treasures you’ve accumulated from travels in far-off lands? Are you a craftsperson or artist, and have artisan wares you’d like to show off? Whether you’ve found it or made it, contact your Life Enrichment Team to secure a space in this year’s first-ever Artisan Showcase of resident antiques, art, and novel designs.

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which

can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important. Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT Our philanthropic focus in 2021 was supporting Friends of the Children-Detroit, an organization which mentors 48 young students entering K, 1st or 2nd grade. There were three ways residents gave: by donating school supplies, by sending cash donations, and by writing cards and letters with personal stories and encouragement. Altogether, Friends of the Children-Detroit received several large boxes of supplies, cards, letters, and over $2,400 to directly support the health and education of the next generation of Detroit’s leaders. 23

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS THE MAGIC OF A BÖSENDORFER: AN ALL SEASONS STAPLE least once opined that Bösendorfer and Bechstein pianos were the only instruments capable of withstanding his tremendously powerful playing.

\ You may have noticed the grand pianos which command attention in the grand living spaces of our communities. Maybe you've noticed the way musicians are drawn to them, how they relish in the sounds and feels of bringing a Bösendorfer to life. But if you're unfamiliar with the pianos and their history, you're not alone. Here are just some of the reasons these pianos are truly unique and beloved by the most celebrated pianists throughout history. In 1824, Ignaz Bosendorfer began refining the handmade pianos of Joseph Brodman, a piano builder in Vienna. Primarily, he wanted to heighten the volume of the instrument, whilst preserving the soft, melodious sound of the string. After having won gold medals at industry exhibitions, Ignaz Bosendorfer was awarded the grand title of ‘Imperial and Royal Fortepiano Purveyor to the Court’ in 1839 by Emperor Ferdinand I because of his work. Among the earliest artists to be associated with Bösendorfer was Franz Liszt who at

Bösendorfer remains the premier Austrian piano manufacturer and is unusual in that it produces 97- and 92-key models, in addition to instruments with standard 88-key keyboards. Contrary to all other manufacturers, Bösendorfer constructs instruments concentrating on the use of spruce. More than 80% of spruce, ideal for instruments, can be found in Bösendorfer pianos. The whole body - not exclusively the soundboard - supports sound formation. The actual core of the piano rim consists of a 10 mm quarter-sawn piece that is specially grooved by craftsmen to allow it to be bent to the silhouette around the inner rim. This is unique to Bösendorfer. When a note is played, the integrated spruce components become acoustically active, forming a complete resonating body that allows the whole instrument to project the music. Also, Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer that applies a detachable and independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This is how artisans assure the most precise adjustment in the upper register, guaranteeing the original Bösendorfer sound for generations. We are proud to offer these world renowned instruments to resident and touring musicians for a unique All Seasons experience.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: IKIGAI Sources: BBC by Yukari Mitsuhashi With no direct English translation, Ikigai is a term that embodies the idea of happiness in living. It is composed of two words: iki, which means life, and gai, which describes value or worth. Author and psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya explains that “ikigai” is like happiness but has a subtle difference in its nuance. Ikigai is what allows you to look forward to the future even if you’re unhappy right now. Japanese people believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole. Essentially, ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning. A concept for longevity? Japan has some of the longest-living citizens in the world – 87 years for women and 81 for men, according to the country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Could this concept of ikigai contribute to longevity? Author Dan Buettner believes it does. He's the author of “Blue Zones: Lessons on Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” and has travelled the globe exploring long-lived

communities around the world. One such location is Okinawa, a remote island with a remarkably high number of centenarians. While a unique diet likely has a lot to do with residents’ longevity, Buettner says ikigai also plays a part. “Older people are celebrated, they feel obligated to pass on their wisdom to younger generations,” he says. This gives them a purpose in life outside of themselves, in service to their communities. What You Can Do Buettner suggests making three lists: your values, things you like to do, and things you are good at. The cross section of the three lists is your ikigai! But, knowing your ikigai alone is not enough. Simply put, you need an outlet. Ikigai is “purpose in action,” he says. For 92-year-old Tomi Menaka, her ikigai is to dance and sing with her peers in the KBG84 dance troupe, she told the Mainichi newspaper. For others, it might be work itself, volunteering, or learning new skills. To live with more “ikigai,” reach out to your Director of Life Enrichment to learn more about opportunities through All Seasons.
