INTENTIONAL ETEGAMI ART MEET UP WITH RUTHIE NEILAN In recent years, the popular Japanese art form “etegami” (e= image; tegami= letter) has captured the interest and imagination of artists all over the world. The simplest English definition of etegami may well be “Japanese postcard art.” Etegami was conceived in the 1960s, when calligrapher Kunio Koike became exasperated with the rigid traditions of his field. He envisioned an art form that could be spontaneous and personal without being self-obsessed. Koike began combining simple images with brief but thoughtfully chosen words on washi postcards. He sent these postcards, called this idea “New Year’s cards in their everyday clothes,” and created the slogan “Heta de ii, heta ga ii” which can be translated as “It’s okay to be awkward. Awkwardness has charm.” This welcoming slogan encouraged people who wanted to make art but felt they lacked the talent to do so. Come explore and expect to be delighted by your own authentic Etegami! 7

RESIDENT MEMOIRS

MY FRIEND ARLENE

BY HARRY HABER

A piece written by Harry Haber in Memoir Writing Group After moving in and getting settled at All Seasons, Elaine and I introduced some of the residents to a card game called threes and fours. It was a simple game, played by four to ten people which was fun and enjoyable. The first hand everyone was dealt 6 cards. Each player would need to accumulate two sets of three in the same number or picture. Three fives and three tens in different suits. Upon obtaining the needed combinations the player would lay them out on the table and work on discarding all other cards. Each hand would have different combinations. Seven cards dealt would require a straight run in one suit and one set of threes. As the game unfolded the combinations would increase until each player received thirteen cards with different combinations. The game was played every Friday at 1:00 P.M with the participants laughing and yelling. It was an afternoon of fun. We eventually had two tables with about eight to ten players at each table.

One afternoon a new lady wheeled herself into the room. She asked if she could join us and play. “Of course, you can join us. Everyone is invited." She introduced herself as Arlene and she lived in the assisted living wing of All Seasons. She explained that she had a problem hearing and seeing. I assured her that she would fit right in with our group. I told Arlene she could sit next to me at the game and I would help her. After a few weeks she caught on to the game, even winning some of the hands. She was friendly and a delight to have her playing with us. One day, after finishing the game, I was getting the cards and the card shuffler together to put away. Everyone had left except Arlene and me. I asked her if I could help her with anything. She replied no, but asked if we could sit and talk for a while. I guessed that being alone in a one-bedroom apartment she missed having conversations with other people. We sat there for about 45 minutes. We had something in common. We both came from Brooklyn and had a Jewish background. She told me a little about her family and life and I shared similar information with her. It was a delightful time spent with Arlene. I felt good that I could share this time and I now had a new friend, Arlene. Arlene is a charming woman with a smile and a gleam in her eye. Every time we see each other she smiles for me and I give it back to her. So, if you open yourself up to someone you can give that person a little joy, and the rewards for yourself are even greater. My new friend Arlene.

RESIDENT POETRY

“Mountain Storm” by Wilma Lentz

On a sultry August afternoon at our mountain cabin, in ancient chairs we sit and read in silence, hoping for a storm. Air so thick with moisture, one can almost wring out drops. Screeching jays and scolding squirrels suspend their quarrels, hummers abandon feeders, all disappear into sentinel pines. Sunflowers turn their heads, uselessly seeking a sun that plays hide and seek behind heavy clouds. A flirty breeze bears scent of far-off rain, Gusts of wind ruffle the pages of our books. We taste dust and grit. Jagged streaks of lightning open up the waiting sky. We hear the crack and, startled, jump as thunder splits the air. The acrid smell of ozone assails our nostrils, Rain comes pounding down in sheets, quenching the earth's thirst. We scramble for shelter, laughing as raindrops sting our skin and are grateful. 14

Bonnie has been known to be a wonderful cook and has passed her talent and love for cooking down to her kids. She also explained that the love for cooking runs in the family. Bonnie is quite personable and says that she is that way because she loves to talk to people and help others. She is down to earth, tells it like she sees it and when you really get to know her, you will soon find out that she is quite the comedian.

TESTIMONIALS

FROM OUR RESIDENTS & FAMILIES Maureen @ ASAA: “Who would have believed that a senior community could become my extended family in a matter of months? Such was my experience this summer and I consider my decision to move to All Seasons Ann Arbor one of my best.” Ardin @ ASBH: “My 97 year old father just moved into his apartment at All Seasons. It's a beautiful apartment. He has met some wonderful residents here and is having no trouble making new friends. The dining room is beautiful and Dad says the food is really good. He has attended some concerts and looks forward to picking out the next activity from a list of many great things to do. He has even hopped on the treadmill in the exercise room at All Seasons. He is very happy here. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. I'm so glad Dad suggested we take a tour of All Seasons to see what they had to offer.” Dianna @ ASNA: “I can’t say enough good things about All Seasons. My father in law came from Manhattan and has never looked or felt better with the care he has been given in assisted living. My mom had a water leak in her house and was only staying in All Seasons temporarily. After two months, she put her home up for sale and never looked back. She loves all the daily activities All Seasons provides, music, food and gatherings are above and beyond.” Johnny @ ASOV: “Walking into All Seasons for the first time was like walking into a beautiful picture! I was amazed at the care and detail the architect’s took when creating this home for the Residents. Seeing the smile on the Residents and employees’ faces told me that this home was not only beautiful, but that the care and detail extended far into the heart of the building.” Kevin @ ASRH: “Love this place… people are so friendly… love the atmosphere… and when they were showing me around several residents came up and said they love it here.” Randi @ ASWB: “My mother has lived at ASWB for 2 years. The staff at All Seasons are caring and kind. It’s nice to come in and be greeted with smiling faces who are willing to help. The dining room staff have been very accommodating and helpful. They go out of their way to make things right. All the staff did a wonderful job during COVID to make residents feel comfortable and safe.” 22

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which

can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important. Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.

FULL MOON DRUM CIRCLE This quarter, full moons will fall on the following dates: 13 JULY Buck Moon 11 AUGUST Sturgeon Moon 10 SEPTEMBER Corn/Harvest Moon

This monthly community-wide event is open to all skill levels. Drumming circles help boost the immune system and promote physical and communal healing. Did You Know? The moon produces no visible light of its own, so we can only see the parts of the Moon that are lit up by other objects. A small amount of light comes from distant stars and the reflection of light from the Earth, known as 'Earthshine'. However, the main source of light for the Moon is the Sun.

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS A WORD ABOUT THE ART We are happy to share with our residents, visitors, and friends the art exhibited throughout our community. Each piece was individually conceived and created specifically for where it is presented for collective viewing enjoyment. To put it another way, the photographs are specifically curated considering the interior design and dimensions of each room. Each of the six All Seasons - in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Naples, Oro Valley, Rochester Hills, and West Bloomfield - showcase photography highlighting the local natural landscape and urban features, creating a porous border between interior and exterior beauty.

to each community for the creation of a portfolio that is totally unique, privately commissioned, and signed by the creator. These art collections are highly valued and significantly insured. We hope that these unique pieces - in some cases on canvases up to 10 feet long - express the exuberance of their subjects and engender the energy and “felt” experience of being alive - indeed, of life itself.

We are committed and proud to display art within our communities that has been commissioned specifically for the purpose of enhancing the beauty of the communities as well as inspiring a sense of energy and joy. It is consistent with our mission to create within our communities an atmosphere which we are proud to proclaim is engaging, enlivening, innovative, and “totally captivating.” For that purpose, a great deal of time, effort and resources are dedicated 24

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: SOUND HEALTH Did you know about the groundbreaking Sound Health Initiative and “Music and the Mind”? If you haven’t, you might have heard of one of the key stakeholders of the project -none other than renowned soprano Renée Fleming! Renée Fleming is a leading advocate for the study of the powerful connections between the arts and health. As Artistic Advisor at Large to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Renée has spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Sound Health initiative explores and brings attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience.

Renée Fleming is passionate about the central importance of music and the arts in our society. Most of us have, at times, felt moved or comforted by music, but scientists are now discovering that music can teach us a lot about the brain itself. Music engages many neural regions at once, and evidence suggests that it can shape and even alter our brains. In addition to using music to better understand the complex functioning of the brain, researchers have found creative arts therapy to be effective tools in addressing the effects of an ever-widening array of conditions. Especially compelling is the fact that music, dance, and art therapies are cost-effective, non-pharmaceutical, and noninvasive. Many can be administered in group settings, offering benefits for emotional wellbeing, and through tele-health, increasing accessibility. And the impact of arts on the developing brains of children is another burgeoning field of study, with effects reaching beyond test results and scholastic aptitude to creativity and success throughout life.
