MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CARL PRATT

I continue to find great pleasure in seeing how much joy is here at All Seasons Oro Valley. We hear repeatedly from visitors how wonderful it ‘feels’ coming to our community. It takes a village, and it is evident that we have, together, created something special. We rang in the new year with a wonderful celebration, an amazing spread created by our culinary team, fantastic entertainment, and good company to set the tone for 2022. A new engaging series of talks presented by the Tucson Museum of Art docents created a great deal of interest and excitement and, of course, our resident-led activities continue to bring out the amazing talents we have among us. As we look to the spring there is much to anticipate with outings to local establishments including stopping to smell the flowers and sipping of spirits. June’s signature event will bring us a string duet that will likely be the highlight of the quarter’s musical performances. One last word of gratitude to all the kindness you have shown our dedicated team. Through it all, you have shown your appreciation in many ways and that makes all the difference. Sincerely, Carl Pratt

RESIDENT POETRY THROUGH YOUR CHILD'S EYES By Wilma Lentz Take my hand, little one, together let's go out to the garden where the growing things grow.

DUO CHINOISERIE JUNE 7 @ 3 PM Here is a rare pairing of the acoustic Spanish guitar with China’s guzheng, a zither-like instrument with a 2,500year history. Jing Xia, trained at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, is an instructor at the University of Arizona Confucius Institute. Chinese-born guitarist Bin Hu holds a master’s degree from the Salzburg Conservatory, and won the 2016 David Russell Bach Prize. Founded in 2016, Duo Chinoiserie is a unique pairing that combines the Chinese guzheng and the European classical guitar. This duo reproduces the elegance of the Chinoiserie style and brings the best of Eastern and Western culture together through music. Its bold and carefully handpicked selection of repertoire explores the instruments’ dialogue and complementary textures while uniting contrasting musical styles into a cohesive, well-defined whole.

We'll plant us some carrots along with some beans and grow us some veggies like you've never seen! You giggle as the wet grass tickles your toes and startle as a hummingbird zooms by your nose! The zinnias are nodding their colorful heads as we carefully walk through bright flower beds. What are you watching, with your eyes open wide? Why, it's a beetle that is trying to hide! See that red ladybug on that pink flower that's sparkling and glistening from this morning's shower? Hear the buzz of the honeybee as it's just taken flight from one blossom to another and once more alights. Watch the tiny black ants as they come scurrying by, the young bird in the tree that is learning to fly. I give you a trowel and you dig in the soil And laugh with delight as the earthworms uncoil. I give you some seeds, which you carefully place in the trough you have dug, earnest look on your face. You lovingly cover your seeds now with dirt. I turn on the hose and you give them a squirt. We linger awhile so that you can explore all the beauty of nature that's outside our door. Your sweet little face filled with curiosity and surprise at the glory of Nature through your wondering eyes. If you would like your poem featured in next quarter’s guide, contact the Life Enrichment Team! 6

INTENTIONAL ETEGAMI ART MEET UP WITH RUTHIE NEILAN In recent years, the popular Japanese art form “etegami” (e= image; tegami= letter) has captured the interest and imagination of artists all over the world. The simplest English definition of etegami may well be “Japanese postcard art.” Etegami was conceived in the 1960s, when calligrapher Kunio Koike became exasperated with the rigid traditions of his field. He envisioned an art form that could be spontaneous and personal without being self-obsessed. Koike began combining simple images with brief but thoughtfully chosen words on washi postcards. He sent these postcards, called this idea “New Year’s cards in their everyday clothes,” and created the slogan “Heta de ii, heta ga ii” which can be translated as “It’s okay to be awkward. Awkwardness has charm.” This welcoming slogan encouraged people who wanted to make art but felt they lacked the talent to do so. Come explore and expect to be delighted by your own authentic Etegami! NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY MONTH RESIDENT EXHIBIT In May, we will showcase a Resident Picture Exhibit for National Photography Month. Throughout the month of May, we invite you to bring one of your favorite photos to post on the art studio walls. Make sure to write your name on the back! Together, image by image, we’ll create a body of work that captures our community members and the people, places, and things they hold dear to their heart.

FULL MOON DRUM CIRCLE This quarter, full moons will fall on the following dates: 16 APRIL Pink Moon 15 MAY Flower Moon (total lunar eclipse) 14 JUNE Strawberry Moon

This monthly community-wide event is open to all skill levels. Drumming circles help boost the immune system and promote physical and communal healing. Did You Know? The moon produces no visible light of its own, so we can only see the parts of the Moon that are lit up by other objects. A small amount of light comes from distant stars and the reflection of light from the Earth, known as 'Earthshine'. However, the main source of light for the Moon is the Sun.

The unique combination of high elevation, arid climate and sunshine provides the perfect environment for lavender to flourish and produce high quality essential oil. That was the spark that inspired them to make winemaking a part of life. They eventually found an unexpected home in Southern Arizona. Visit the cozy and comfortable Tasting Room and Vineyard and relax while drinking the delicious, organic and sulfite-free wine.

One of the benefits of getting your hands a little dirty is an improved immune system. Studies have shown that Mycobacterium vaccae, the bacteria that is found in garden soil, can improve your immune system. This “friendly” bacteria has been known to alleviate symptoms of allergies, asthma, psoriasis, and even depression. Resident Photography Viewing: a Culmination of National Photography Month - June 1 - In May, we will showcase a Resident Picture Exhibit for National Photography Month. Throughout the month of May, we invite you to bring one of your favorite photos to post on the art studio walls. Make sure to write your name on the back! Together, image by image, we’ll create a body of work that captures our community members and the people, places, and things they hold dear to their heart. Then join us on June 1st for a final viewing and reception.

Art by Chivas Exhibit - May 18 - Experience the ink medium like you’ve never seen it before! Your favorite Life Enrichment Coordinator, Chi-Vas White will be holding an exhibit on his own original work in the art studio followed by a reception and artist talk. Memorial Day Celebration - May 30 - Honor our veterans and those who have served with a ceremony by the flag, patriotic music, and a reception. Juneteenth - June 19 - Commemorate this day with a documentary on Juneteenth’s history and a celebration of freedom. Juneteenth commemorates the day when emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, two months after the Civil War ended and more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that Union Gen. Gordon Granger and more than a thousand U.S. troops shared the news of freedom with the 250,000 enslaved people in the state. The anniversary of that day is celebrated as one of the best-regarded African American holidays in this country, ranking next only to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's birthday.

ALL SEASONS ORO VALLEY RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTS BARBARA GRASS Born in Cape Cod, MA, Barbara Grass has always loved art. She went to The Vesper George School of Art in Boston, which led her to a career in the Art Department for the New England Telephone Company. She designed masterful needlework, even teaching and traveling for the American Needlepoint Guild and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, giving seminars across the country. Her mother initially taught her, and Barbara is pleased to have passed on these art techniques to many generations. Barbara has two sons, whom she visited in Arizona for over 25 years before she decided on settling in the Grand Canyon State. A fun fact about Barbara is that she can trace her lineage back to 1625, when her ancestors sailed from England to settle on the Cape.

JOANNE ERVIN Joanne, 85-years-young, was born in Eureka, Kansas and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. She married her first husband, Larry, in 1954. Larry served in the Air Force and together they moved all over the States and even lived in Norway and Bermuda. After his passing, she married Richard in 1982. Joanne has four daughters (Sherry, Susan, Sandy, and Sharon), four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Joanne was a Mortgage Lender Manager for 20 years, after working as a photographer in Omaha. A music lover, she enjoyed meeting many famous big band leaders over the years. She loves bridge, skiing, dancing, entertaining, and traveling. In her later years, she put her love of humor and laughter to good use, transforming herself for children’s parties into “JoJo the Clown” in Apache Junction! You will always see Joanne with a smile on her face and a kind word to say.

SUE CONTO Sue was a World War II baby born in California to a mother who worked in a doctor’s office and a father who worked as a crop duster. Sue was the first person on either side of her family to go to college. She graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelors in Education. It was there that she first met Tom. He was the best looking man she had ever seen. They might have met in a Geology class, but right from the beginning, it was all about chemistry. Over the years, they moved from New Jersey to Arizona to British Columbia with their four boys. They eventually moved back to Arizona and lived in Globe for 45 years. Sue has always been able to pick up an instrument and pass the time with music. She’s dabbled in piano, accordion, guitar, and ukulele. To her, classical guitar is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. When asked about the coolest gift she ever received, she fondly recalls the blue Schwinn bike she was given at age 12. 19

BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER

MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT The Berliner Philharmoniker, founded in 1882, is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is one of the most popular, acclaimed and wellrespected orchestras in the world. Join us each month for an intimate program screening with refreshments. April selection: John Eliot Gardiner conducts Brahms and Mendelssohn John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir present two key choral works from the Romantic period. During this era, spiritual music was intended to edify. Johannes Brahms does that in his dramatic Schicksalslied by reinterpreting Hölderlin’s resigned text with an optimistic epilogue. Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony, on the other hand, shows the way from darkness into the radiant vision of a better world with melodious choruses, duets, and arias.

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which

can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important. Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.

To learn how you can improve family communication with CareMerge, contact your Director of Life Enrichment today!

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT All Seasons Oro Valley residents love to give back! Last quarter’s philanthropic efforts included collecting clothes and essential items for the Sister José Women’s Center, which residents delivered to the organization personally; drawing cards and writing letters of support and encouragement for young people experiencing homelessness through the organization “Youth On Their Own,” and stitching bags for the organization “Beads of Courage,” which provides innovative Arts-in-Medicine programs for children coping with serious illness. Every Beads of Courage Program integrates the use of beads, the earliest art form known to humans, as visible, tangible symbols of human experiences that need and deserve to be expressed. These beautiful bags were given to children to contain the numerous amounts of beads they will receive during their treatment.

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS THE MAGIC OF A BÖSENDORFER: AN ALL SEASONS STAPLE Bechstein pianos were the only instruments capable of withstanding his tremendously powerful playing.

\ You may have noticed the grand pianos which command attention in the grand living spaces of our communities. Maybe you've noticed the way musicians are drawn to them, how they relish in the sounds and feels of bringing a Bösendorfer to life. But if you're unfamiliar with the pianos and their history, you're not alone. Here are just some of the reasons these pianos are truly unique and beloved by the most celebrated pianists throughout history. In 1824, Ignaz Bosendorfer began refining the handmade pianos of Joseph Brodman, a piano builder in Vienna. Primarily, he wanted to heighten the volume of the instrument, whilst preserving the soft, melodious sound of the string. After having won gold medals at industry exhibitions, Ignaz Bosendorfer was awarded the grand title of ‘Imperial and Royal Fortepiano Purveyor to the Court’ in 1839 by Emperor Ferdinand I because of his work. Among the earliest artists to be associated with Bösendorfer was Franz Liszt who at least once opined that Bösendorfer and

Bösendorfer remains the premier Austrian piano manufacturer and is unusual in that it produces 97- and 92-key models, in addition to instruments with standard 88-key keyboards. Contrary to all other manufacturers, Bösendorfer constructs instruments concentrating on the use of spruce. More than 80% of spruce, ideal for instruments, can be found in Bösendorfer pianos. The whole body - not exclusively the soundboard - supports sound formation. The actual core of the piano rim consists of a 10 mm quarter-sawn piece that is specially grooved by craftsmen to allow it to be bent to the silhouette around the inner rim. This is unique to Bösendorfer. When a note is played, the integrated spruce components become acoustically active, forming a complete resonating body that allows the whole instrument to project the music. Also, Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer that applies a detachable and independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This is how artisans assure the most precise adjustment in the upper register, guaranteeing the original Bösendorfer sound for generations. We are proud to offer these world renowned instruments to resident and touring musicians for a unique All Seasons experience.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: IKIGAI Sources: BBC by Yukari Mitsuhashi With no direct English translation, Ikigai is a term that embodies the idea of happiness in living. It is composed of two words: iki, which means life, and gai, which describes value or worth. Author and psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya explains that “ikigai” is like happiness but has a subtle difference in its nuance. Ikigai is what allows you to look forward to the future even if you’re unhappy right now. Japanese people believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole. Essentially, ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning. A concept for longevity? Japan has some of the longest-living citizens in the world – 87 years for women and 81 for men, according to the country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Could this concept of ikigai contribute to longevity? Author Dan Buettner believes it does. He's the author of “Blue Zones: Lessons on Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” and has travelled the globe exploring long-lived

communities around the world. One such location is Okinawa, a remote island with a remarkably high number of centenarians. While a unique diet likely has a lot to do with residents’ longevity, Buettner says ikigai also plays a part. “Older people are celebrated, they feel obligated to pass on their wisdom to younger generations,” he says. This gives them a purpose in life outside of themselves, in service to their communities. What You Can Do Buettner suggests making three lists: your values, things you like to do, and things you are good at. The cross section of the three lists is your ikigai! But, knowing your ikigai alone is not enough. Simply put, you need an outlet. Ikigai is “purpose in action,” he says. For 92-year-old Tomi Menaka, her ikigai is to dance and sing with her peers in the KBG84 dance troupe, she told the Mainichi newspaper. For others, it might be work itself, volunteering, or learning new skills. To live with more “ikigai,” reach out to your Director of Life Enrichment to learn more about opportunities through All Seasons.
